April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed thermal response test (DTRT), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), shallow geothermal systems, thermal evolution, thermal soil properties, wireless distributed temperature sensing (DTS)
To meet the stated climate change targets and to ensure the capability of meeting the current and future energy demands, there is an urgent need to develop renewable energy sources, such as geothermal systems. If geothermal systems are to be cost-efficient and are to enjoy public confidence, it is essential that they are designed and installed in accordance with the prevailing site-specific conditions. A thorough understanding of the thermal behaviour of the surrounding ground is, therefore, critical. In this work, we investigated temperature and its evolution in the vicinity of a shallow geothermal helix-shaped borehole heat exchanger (BHE). To measure the temperature close to the actual geothermal system, an additional U-tube probe was installed at the edge of the same borehole. A thermal load was then applied to the BHE, and the temperature was detected in the nearby U-tube. The temperature measurements were made with a GEOSniff monitoring device. To understand these localised tempe... [more]

Keywords: ancillary services, Belgian power system, COVID-19, grid integration, intermittency, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy, wind energy
Renewable Energy Sources (RES) have drawn significant attention in the past years to make the transition towards low carbon emissions. On the one hand, the intermittent nature of RES, resulting in variable power generation, hinders their high-level penetration in the power system. On the other hand, RES can aid not only to supply much more eco-friendly energy but also it allows the power system to enhance its stability by ancillary service provision. This article reviews the challenges related to the most intermittent RES utilised in Belgium, that is, wind energy and solar energy. Additionally, wind speed and solar irradiance variations, which are the cause of wind and solar intermittency, are studied. Then, recent techniques to forecast their changes, and approaches to accommodate or mitigate their impacts on the power system, are discussed. Finally, the latest statistics and future situation of RES in the Belgian power system are evaluated.

Keywords: computed X-ray tomography, geoscience, multiple linear regression, permeability, shale gas, tight rocks
Computed X-ray tomography (CT), together with pulse and pressure decay permeability methods were used to evaluate a formula for absolute reservoir permeability. For this reason, 62 core samples representing geological material of tight, gas-bearing sandstones, mudstones, limestones, and dolostones were studied. Samples were divided into two groups with lower and higher permeability values. Images of the pore space were processed and interpreted to obtain geometrical parameters of the objects (pores, microfractures) with 0.5 × 0.5 × 0.5 µm3 voxel size. Statistical methods, which included basic statistical analysis, linear regression, and multiple linear regression analysis, were combined to evaluate the formula for absolute permeability. It appeared that the following parameters: Feret Breadth/Volume, Flatness/Anisotropy, Feret Max/Flatness, moments of inertia around middle principal axis I2/around longest principal axis I3, Anisotropy/Flatness, Flatness/Anisotropy provided the best res... Keywords: distributed generation (DG), high gain, quadratic boost, voltage stress
The growth of renewable energy in the last two decades has led to the development of new power electronic converters. The DC microgrid can operate in standalone mode, or it can be grid-connected. A DC microgrid consists of various distributed generation (DG) units like solar PV arrays, fuel cells, ultracapacitors, and microturbines. The DC-DC converter plays an important role in boosting the output voltage in DC microgrids. DC-DC converters are needed to boost the output voltage so that a common voltage from different sources is available at the DC link. A conventional boost converter (CBC) suffers from the problem of limited voltage gain, and the stress across the switch is usually equal to the output voltage. The output from DG sources is low and requires high-gain boost converters to enhance the output voltage. In this paper, a new high-gain DC-DC converter with quadratic voltage gain and reduced voltage stress across switching devices was proposed. The proposed converter was an imp... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DEA analysis, electricity, Energy Efficiency, primary energy, production function
We examine energy efficiency in the European Union (EU) using an integrated model that connects labor and capital as production factors with energy consumption to produce GDP with a limited amount of environmental emissions. The model is a linear output-oriented BCC data envelopment analysis (DEA) that employs variables with non-negative values to calculate efficiency scores for a sample of 28 EU member states in the period 2010−2018. We assume variable returns to scale (VRS) considering the natural inclination of countries to adopt technologies that allow them to produce higher outputs over extended periods of time, which we observed through the trends of increasing labor productivity and decreasing energy intensity over the analyzed period. The average EU inefficiency margin in the sample period is 16.0%, with old member states being significantly more efficient (4.2%) than new member states (29.5%). Energy efficiency management does not improve over time, especially in new member st... [more]

Keywords: geothermal energy, greenhouse, heat exchange, payback period
Among the many different applications of geothermal energy, its use for agricultural production purposes is noteworthy. The use of geothermal water in greenhouse cultivation is the most modern form of production; it enables the implementation of the production cycle throughout the year while reducing energy costs. In this paper, based on basic heat transfer relations, the heat demand of modern greenhouse constructions was determined. The monthly and year-round heat demand was determined for facilities with diversified heights of the side walls. Depending on the type of unit of greenhouse area analysed (1 ha), the calculated annual heat demand ranged from 11.05 to 12.46 TJ. Based on data on the geothermal energy potential in Poland, investment costs and payback periods were determined for the analysed locations. The locations of the facilities were selected based on traditions of plant cultivation in the greenhouse facilities and the availability of geothermal energy. The analysis showe... [more]

Keywords: capacity attenuation, charging time segment, health indicator, improved cuckoo search
The problem of low accuracy and low convenience in the existing state of health (SOH) estimation method for vehicle lithium-ion batteries has become one of the important problems in the electric vehicle field. This paper proposes an improved cuckoo search particle filter (ICS-PF) algorithm based on a charging time segment from equal voltage data to estimate battery health status. Appropriate voltage ranges of charging time segments are selected according to the battery charging law, and in the meantime, the charging time segments are collected as a health indicator to establish the corresponding relationship with battery capacity attenuation value. An improved cuckoo search particle filter algorithm based on the traditional particle filter (PF) and cuckoo search (CS) algorithm is proposed by enhancing the search step size and discovery probability to estimate the capacity attenuation. The estimation result shows that this method is superior to the traditional particle filter and cuckoo... [more]

Keywords: cohesive zone model, deep reservoir, embedded discrete fracture model, extended finite element method, hydraulic fracture, rock plasticity
Rock yielding may well take place during hydraulic fracturing in deep reservoirs. The prevailing models based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) are incapable of describing the evolution process of hydraulic fractures accurately. In this paper, a hydro-elasto-plastic model is proposed to investigate the hydraulic fracture propagation in deep reservoirs. The Drucker−Prager plasticity model, Darcy’s law, cubic law and cohesive zone model are employed to describe the plastic deformation, matrix flow, fracture flow and evolution of hydraulic fractures, respectively. Combining the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM), extended finite element method (XFEM) and finite volume method, a hybrid numerical scheme is presented to carry out simulations. A dual-layer iterative procedure is developed based on the fixed-stress split method, Picard iterative method and Newton−Raphson iterative method. The iterative procedure is used to deal with the coupling between nonlinear deformation... [more]

Keywords: 1D flow model, hot-water tanks, stratification, thermal-energy storage
Stratified tank models are used to simulate thermal storage in applications such as residential or commercial hot-water storage tanks, chilled-water storage tanks, and solar thermal systems. The energy efficiency of these applications relates to the system components and the level of stratification maintained during various flow events in the tank. One-dimensional (1D) models are used in building energy simulations because of the short computation time but often do not include flow-rate dependent mixing. The accuracy of 1D models for plug flow, plug flow with axial conduction, and two convection eddy-diffusivity models were compared with experimental data sets for discharging a 50-gal residential tank and recharging the tank with hot water from an external hot-water source. A minimum and maximum relationship for the eddy diffusivity factor were found at Re 10,000 for recirculation of hot water to the top of the tank and vertical tubes inletting cold water at the bottom. The root mean s... [more]

Keywords: COVID-19, crude oil, DCC-GARCH, European renewable energy, price leadership share
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a strong influence in all areas of society, like wealth, economy, travel, lifestyle habits, and, amongst many others, financial and energy markets. The influence in standard energies, like crude oil, and renewable energies markets has been twofold: from one side, the predictability of volatility has strongly decreased; secondly, the linkages of the price time series have been modified. In this paper, by using DCC-GARCH and Price Leadership Share methodology, we can investigate the changes in the influences between standard energies and renewable energies markets by analyzing one-minute time series of West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures contract (WTI), the Brent crude oil futures contract (BRENT), the STOXX Europe 600 oil & gas index (SXEV), and the European renewable energy index (ERIX). Our results confirm volatility spillover between the time series. However, when assessing the accuracy of the predictability of the DCC-GARCH model, the results sh... [more]

Keywords: carbonation, corrosion, deterioration, storage life, zinc–air batteries
Zinc−air batteries feature high energy density, but they usually suffer from their short storage life after they start working, restricting their commercial applications. In the past, scholars did not reach an agreement on the influencing factors of the performance degradation of zinc−air batteries when exposed to air. Here, a series of comparative experiments were conducted to confirm the changes of the battery during storage after being exposed to air. The morphology and composition of the components of the battery were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analyses. SEM images revealed that with the increase of storage days, the corrosion of the zinc anode gradually deepens, but the surface morphology of the air cathode does not change much. The electrolyte of the batteries stored for different periods was examined through inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy and titration. After 20 days of storage, the concentration of CO32− reached 2.694 mol... [more]

Keywords: 3D-printed ZrO2 and Al2O3 ceramics, concentrated solar power (CSP), corrosion resistance, molten salt, three-point-bend strength (3PB strength)
Oxide ceramics could be attractive high-temperature construction materials for critical structural parts in high-temperature molten salt thermal energy storage systems due to their excellent corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. The 3D-printing technology allows the production of ceramic components with highly complex geometries, and therefore extends their applications. In this work, 3D-printed ZrO2 and Al2O3 ceramics were immersed in molten MgCl2/KCl/NaCl under argon or exposed in argon without molten chlorides at 700 °C for 600 h. Their material properties and microstructure were investigated through three-point-bend (3PB) testing and material analysis with SEM-EDX and XRD. The results show that the 3D-printed Al2O3 maintained its mechanical property after exposure in the strongly corrosive molten chloride salt. The 3D-printed ZrO2 had an enhanced 3PB strength after molten salt exposure, whereas no change was observed after exposure in argon at 700 °C. The material an... [more]

Keywords: 2D external flood analysis, 2D internal flood analysis, flood hazard curve, fragility curve, probabilistic flood analysis
Abnormal weather conditions due to climate change are currently increasing on both global and local scales. It is therefore important to ensure the safety of the areas where major national facilities are located by analyzing risk quantitatively and re-evaluating the existing major facilities, such as nuclear power plants, considering the load and capacity of extreme flood conditions. In this study, a risk analysis method is developed that combines flood hazard curves with fragility curves using hydraulic and hydrological models by GIS tools and the @RISK model for the probabilistic flood analysis of nuclear power plant sites. A two-dimensional (2D) analysis is first carried out to estimate flood depths in various watershed scenarios, and a representative hazard curve for both external and internal flooding is made by applying a verified probability distribution type for the flood watersheds. For the analysis of flooding within buildings, an internal grid is constructed using GIS with r... [more]

Keywords: battery second use, electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, Machine Learning, screening, state of health
The continually expanding number of electric vehicles in circulation presents challenges in terms of end-of-life disposal, driving interest in the reuse of batteries for second-life applications. A key aspect of battery reuse is the quantification of the relative battery condition or state of health (SoH), to inform the subsequent battery application and to match batteries of similar capacity. Impedance spectroscopy has demonstrated potential for estimation of state of health, however, there is difficulty in interpreting results to estimate state of health reliably. This study proposes a model-free, convolutional-neural-network-based estimation scheme for the state of health of high-power lithium-ion batteries based on a dataset of impedance spectroscopy measurements from 13 end-of-first-life Nissan Leaf 2011 battery modules. As a baseline, this is compared with our previous approach, where parameters from a Randles equivalent circuit model (ECM) with and without dataset-specific adapt... [more]

Krzysztof Kotwica
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: disk tool, energy consumption, hard rock mining, high-pressure water jet assistance
The mining of hard rocks by mechanical methods, using cutting tools, is associated with problems such as sparking, dust generation and increased wear. The application of disk tools allows limiting these problems but requires constructing a machine with large dimensions and weight. To limit these problems, high-pressure water jets can be applied. The article presents the effects of using this solution in the field and stand tests when mining rocks with a symmetrical disk. The results of the bench tests of high-pressure water jets to support the process of mining with symmetrical disks, carried out at the AGH University of Science and Technology, performed on a unique test stand, which enabled the samples to be mined in a circular trajectory in conditions similar to real ones, are presented. With the use of a dimensional analysis, a theoretical-empirical model was developed to estimate the impact of slots cut by water jets on the tool load and the amount of output as a function of slots... Keywords: counter-rotating electric generator, counter-rotating wind rotors, Modelling, operational point, planetary speed increaser, speed-adding increaser, wind turbine
Increasing the efficiency of wind power conversion into electricity poses major challenges to researchers and developers of wind turbines, who are striving for new solutions that can ensure better use of local wind potential in terms of both feasibility and affordability. The paper proposes a novel concept of wind systems with counter-rotating wind rotors that can integrate either conventional or counter-rotating electric generators, by means of the same differential planetary speed increaser, aiming at providing a comparative analysis of the energy performance of counter-rotating wind turbines with counter-rotating vs. conventional electric generators. To this end, a generalized analytical model for angular speeds and torques has been developed, which can be customized for both system configurations. Three numerical simulation scenarios have been contrasted: (a) a scenario with identical wind rotors in both systems, (b) a scenario with the secondary wind rotors being identical in the... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clustering, collapsing, dbscan, geothermal reservoir, HDR, induced microseismicity, SRV
The main goal of this paper was to estimate the heat exchange rock mass volume of a hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal reservoir based on microseismicity location. There are two types of recorded microseismicity: induced by flowing fluid (wet microseismicity) and induced by stress mechanisms (dry microseismicity). In this paper, an attempt was made to extract events associated with the injected fluid flow. The authors rejected dry microseismic events with no hydraulic connection with the stimulated fracture network so as to avoid overestimating the reservoir volume. The proposed algorithm, which includes the collapsing method, automatic cluster detection, and spatiotemporal cluster evolution from the injection well, was applied to the microseismic dataset recorded during stimulation of the Soultz-sous-Forets HDR field in September 1993. The stimulated reservoir volume obtained from wet seismicity using convex hulls is approximately five times smaller than the volume obtained from the primar... [more]

Keywords: driving cycle, driving range, electric vehicle, energy consumption, Markov chains
A driving cycle is a time series of a vehicle’s speed, reflecting its movement in real road conditions. In addition to certification and comparative research, driving cycles are used in the virtual design of drive systems and embedded control algorithms, traffic management and intelligent road transport (traffic engineering). This study aimed to develop an adaptive driving cycle for a known route to optimize the energy consumption of an electric vehicle and improve the driving range. A novel distance-based adaptive driving cycle method was developed. The proposed algorithm uses the segmentation and iterative synthesis procedures of Markov chains. Energy consumption during driving is monitored on an ongoing basis using Gaussian process regression, and speed and acceleration are corrected adaptively to maintain the planned energy consumption. This paper presents the results of studies of simulated driving cycles and the performance of the algorithm when applied to the real recorded drivi... [more]

Keywords: heat transfer, heat transfer correlation, natural convection in spherical enclosures, numerical analysis, supercritical helium
As an ideal pressurized gas, helium, especially supercritical helium, has been widely used in the pressurization system of various launch vehicles and spacecraft. This work mainly focuses on the natural convection of cryogenic supercritical helium in a spherical enclosure. Firstly, a three-dimensional numerical model is established and verified with experimental data. Then, the effects of inflation pressure and heating power on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are simulated. At the same time, the relationship between the Rayleigh number and Nusselt number is studied in detail. Finally, an improved natural convection heat transfer correlation modified by introducing the density ratio is obtained. The results show that the increase of the inflation pressure in the cavity is helpful to enhance the natural convection heat transfer of the cryogenic supercritical helium, and the temperature distribution in the cavity tends to be more uniform when the inflation pressure in the cavit... Keywords: autothermal, Biomass, chemical looping, fluidized bed, gasification, pilot plant
Chemical looping gasification (CLG) is a promising process for the thermochemical solid to liquid conversion route using lattice oxygen, provided by a solid oxygen carrier material, to produce a nitrogen free synthesis gas. Recent advances in lab-scale experiments show that CLG with biomass has the possibility to produce a carbon neutral synthesis gas. However, all experiments have been conducted in externally heated units, not enabling autothermal operation. In this study, the modification of an existing pilot plant for demonstrating autothermal operation of CLG is described. Energy and mass balances are calculated using a validated chemical looping combustion process model extended for biomass gasification. Based on six operational cases, adaptations of the pilot plant are designed and changes discussed. A reactor configuration using two circulating fluidized bed reactors with internal solid circulation in the air reactor is proposed and a suitable operating strategy devised. The res... [more]

The strong interdependency between economic growth and conventional energy consumption have led to significant environmental impact, especially with respect to greenhouse gas emissions. Conventional energy-intensive industries release increasing quantities every year, which has prompted global leaders to consider new approaches based on sustainable consumption. The main purpose of this research is to propose a new energy index that accounts for the complexity and interdependences between the research variables. The methodology is based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and combines the key components determined into a score that allows for both temporal and cross-country comparisons. All data analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 25™. The main findings show that most countries improved their economic performance since 2014, but the speed of the improvement varies a lot from one country to another. There is a groundswell of interest in applying phototrophic microorganisms, specifically microalgae and cyanobacteria, for biotechnology and ecosystem service applications. However, there are inherent challenges associated with conventional routes to their deployment (using ponds, raceways and photobioreactors) which are synonymous with suspension cultivation techniques. Cultivation as biofilms partly ameliorates these issues; however, based on the principles of process intensification, by taking a step beyond biofilms and exploiting nature inspired artificial cell immobilisation, new opportunities become available, particularly for applications requiring extensive deployment periods (e.g., carbon capture and wastewater bioremediation). We explore the rationale for, and approaches to immobilised cultivation, in particular the application of latex-based polymer immobilisation as living biocomposites. We discuss how biocomposites can be optimised at the design stage based on mass transfe... [more]
