Multi-State Reliability Assessment Model of Base-Load Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (CPES) during Flexible Operation Considering the Aging of Cyber Components
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aging, Control Rod System (CRS), Cyber-Physical System (CPS), load-following, multi-state model, Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Renewable Energy Source (RES)
Cyber-Physical Energy Systems (CPESs) are energy systems which rely on cyber components for energy production, transmission and distribution control, and other functions. With the penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), CPESs are required to provide flexible operation (e.g., load-following, frequency regulation) to respond to any sudden imbalance of the power grid, due to the variability in power generation by RESs. This raises concerns on the reliability of CPESs traditionally used as base-load facilities, such as Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs), which were not designed for flexible operation, and more so, since traditionally only hardware components aging and stochastic failures have been considered for the reliability assessment, whereas the contribution of the degradation and aging of the cyber components of CPSs has been neglected. In this paper, we propose a multi-state model that integrates the hardware components stochastic failures with the aging of cyber components, and q... [more]

Multivariate Analysis of a Wind−PV-Based Water Pumping Hybrid System for Irrigation Purposes
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hybrid system, photovoltaic generator, sizing methodology, water pumping, wind generator
The Green Deal and increased nutritional needs are driving factors in human activities nowadays. Agriculture is an essential economic sector that can profit from the application of renewable energy sources by the assimilation of off-grid, arid and barren terrains. Power supplied by hybrid systems for water pumping is a solution for overcoming the stochastic character of the renewable energy sources. This paper presents a sizing methodology for a hybrid system with wind and PV generation and water tank storage, based on the consideration of the entire energy conversion chain with energy models and a one-year operation simulation. The PV generator is modeled using a reduced Durisch’s model, while for the wind generator a piecewise interpolation is used. The methodology is applied for sites in Bulgaria with specific agricultural crops and meteorological data. Combinations of PV (different technologies) and wind (different types) generators and water tank capacities are considered and disc... [more]

Instantaneous Electromagnetic Torque Components in Synchronous Motors Fed by Load-Commutated Inverters
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: load-commutated inverter, synchronous motor, torsional vibrations
This paper proposes time-domain analytical expressions of the instantaneous pulsating torque components in a synchronous machine air gap when supplied by a load-commutated-inverter (LCI) system. The LCI technology is one of the most used variable frequency drives when very high power and low speed are required in applications such as pipeline recompression and decompression, as well as liquefied natural gas compression. In such applications, synchronous motors are used because of their high efficiency resulting from a separated supply of the current to their rotor through the excitation circuit. These applications usually have long and flexible shafts, which are very sensitive to torsional vibration excitation when their natural frequencies interact with any external torque applied to the shaft. A torsional analysis is required by international standards to assess the survivability of the shaft through the overall speed range of the motor. Therefore, the magnitude and frequencies of th... Progress in the Use of Biobutanol Blends in Diesel Engines
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Nowadays, the transport sector is trying to face climate change and to contribute to a sustainable world by introducing modern after-treatment systems or by using biofuels. In sectors such as road freight transportation, agricultural or cogeneration in which the electrification is not considered feasible with the current infrastructure, renewable options for diesel engines such as alcohols produced from waste or lignocellulosic materials with advanced production techniques show a significant potential to reduce the life-cycle greenhouse emissions with respect to diesel fuel. This study concludes that lignocellulosic biobutanol can achieve 60% lower greenhouse gas emissions than diesel fuel. Butanol-diesel blends, with up to 40% butanol content, could be successfully used in a diesel engine calibrated for 100% diesel fuel without any additional engine modification nor electronic control unit recalibration at a warm ambient temperature. When n-butanol is introduced, particulate matter em... [more]

Study on Annular Pressure Buildup in Offshore Heavy Oil Thermal Recovery Wells Considering Dissolved Gas Contained in Annuli
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: annular pressure buildup, casing deformation, dissolved gas, experiment verification, offshore wells
In the offshore industry, especially heavy oil thermal recovery wells, due to the great temperature difference between the low-temperature seawater and high-temperature heavy oil, it is easy to cause the temperature increase of annular fluid in the operation process which will result in the annular pressure buildup phenomenon (APB). The increase of annulus pressure may lead to the failure of the casing and wellbore integrity, which will seriously affect the normal production and lead to great economic loss. In order to study the formation of APB and provide a basis for the field operation design, a radial full-size physical experiment of APB was carried out in this work and an annular pressure prediction model in the presence of dissolved gas was proposed based on the experimental results. The verification and comparison analyses of the full-liquid model and the dissolved gas model were conducted with the experimental data. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis of the influence of the... [more]

Comprehensive Model for Real Battery Simulation Responsive to Variable Load
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery model, battery voltage model, electric circuit model (ECM), KiBaM model, SOC prediction, variable load response
This paper proposes a battery voltage model that is suitable for variable operation. The model combines the features of the Kinetic Battery Model (KiBaM) and voltage model (VM), and it improves the accuracy and quality of the solution, addressing four characteristics of operation: charging, discharging, rest after charge, and rest after discharge. This model will be known as 4-KiVM and shows low impact on computational burden. The proposed model can keep track of the voltage even when the load is inverted or turned off. To calibrate and validate the model, a NASA-provided dataset was used composed of a battery with variable charges and discharges, simulating real applications. A metaheuristic method based on tabu search is used to extract constants from this dataset and validate this hybrid model. In addition, a comparison of performance of the 4-KiVM against KiBaM, VM, and the electric circuit model (ECM) was made, showing its advantages. The results of the simulations showed a good p... Energy Saving Maximization of Balanced and Unbalanced Distribution Power Systems via Network Reconfiguration and Optimum Capacitor Allocation Using a Hybrid Metaheuristic Algorithm
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Harper sphere search, power losses, Tabu search, unbalanced system
The main aim of this work was the maximization of the energy saving of balanced and unbalanced distribution power systems via system reconfiguration and the optimum capacitor’s bank choice, which were estimated by using a new algorithm: modified Tabu search and Harper sphere search (MTS-HSSA). The results demonstrated that the proposed method is appropriate for energy saving and improving performance compared with other methods reported in the literature for IEEE 33-bus adopted systems, including large scale systems such as IEEE 119 and the IEEE 123 unbalanced distribution system. Moreover, it can be used for unbalanced distribution systems distributed generators (DGs). The results demonstrated that the proposed method (the optimal choice of shunt capacitor (SC) banks and the optimal reconfiguration via the proposed algorithm) is appropriate for energy saving compared with different strategies for energy saving, which included distributed generation (DG) at different cost levels.

Usage of the Pareto Fronts as a Tool to Select Data in the Forecasting Process—A Short-Term Electric Energy Demand Forecasting Case
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric energy demand, K nearest neighbors (kNN) algorithm, nondominated solutions, Pareto fronts in forecasting, power engineering challenges
Transmission, distribution, and micro-grid system operators are struggling with the increasing number of renewables and the changing nature of energy demand. This necessitates the use of prognostic methods based on ever shorter time series. This study depicted an attempt to develop an appropriate method by introducing a novel forecasting model based on the idea to use the Pareto fronts as a tool to select data in the forecasting process. The proposed model was implemented to forecast short-term electric energy demand in Poland using historical hourly demand values from Polish TSO. The study rather intended on implementing the range of different approaches—scenarios of Pareto fronts usage than on a complex evaluation of the obtained results. However, performance of proposed models was compared with a few benchmark forecasting models, including naïve approach, SARIMAX, kNN, and regression. For two scenarios, it has outperformed all other models by minimum 7.7%.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, Ethanol, Torulaspora globosa, yeast lipids, zinc
It was obtained that the yeast Torulaspora globosa VKPM Y-953 is suitable for the production of biodiesel fuel. Zinc plays an important regulatory role in the metabolism of the studied strain. The study of the growth parameters and the fatty acid profile of the yeast T. globosa showed that the limitation of its growth by ethanol, at different concentrations of zinc in the medium, considerably influences the chemical composition and the energy content of yeast cells, but not their yield by weight (Yx/s). The increased concentrations of zinc in the medium, in combination with the yeast growth limitation by ethanol, elevated the content of lipids in the cells by 28% and diminished the content of proteins by 14%. At the same time, the limitation of yeast growth by zinc decreased Yx/s and energy (ηX/S) by 2.6 and 3.1 times, respectively. In this case, the content of lipids in cells fell by 72%, while that of proteins rose by 65%. The fatty acid profile of the T. globosa cells was used to es... [more]

Capacity Value from Wind and Solar Sources in Systems with Variable Dispatchable Capacity—An Application in the Brazilian Hydrothermal System
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: capacity contribution, capacity credit, capacity value, effective load carrying capability (ELCC), hydropower, intermittent generation, loss of load expectation (LOLE), loss of load probability (LOLP), variable dispatchable capacity
The most robust methods to determine the capacity contribution from intermittent sources combine load curve, variable generation profile, and dispatchable generators’ data to calculate any new inserted variable source’s capacity value in the power system. However, these methods invariably adopt the premise that the system’s dispatchable generators’ capacity is constant. That is an unacceptable limitation when the energy mix has a large share of hydroelectric sources. Hydroelectric plants are dispatchable sources with variable maximum power output over time, varying mainly according to the reservoirs’ level. This article develops a method that makes it possible to calculate the capacity value from renewable resources when the dispatchable generation units of an electric system have variable capacity. The authors apply the method to calculate the capacity value from solar and wind sources in Brazil as an exercise. By abandoning the hypothesis of constant dispatchable capacity, the develo... [more]

Towards the Hydrogen Economy—A Review of the Parameters That Influence the Efficiency of Alkaline Water Electrolyzers
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alkaline water electrolysis, cell components, efficiency, electrocatalysts, overpotential
Environmental issues make the quest for better and cleaner energy sources a priority. Worldwide, researchers and companies are continuously working on this matter, taking one of two approaches: either finding new energy sources or improving the efficiency of existing ones. Hydrogen is a well-known energy carrier due to its high energy content, but a somewhat elusive one for being a gas with low molecular weight. This review examines the current electrolysis processes for obtaining hydrogen, with an emphasis on alkaline water electrolysis. This process is far from being new, but research shows that there is still plenty of room for improvement. The efficiency of an electrolyzer mainly relates to the overpotential and resistances in the cell. This work shows that the path to better electrolyzer efficiency is through the optimization of the cell components and operating conditions. Following a brief introduction to the thermodynamics and kinetics of water electrolysis, the most recent dev... [more]

Electrical Modelling and Mismatch Effects of Thermoelectric Modules on Performance of a Thermoelectric Generator for Energy Recovery in Diesel Exhaust Systems
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: thermal mismatch, thermal waste energy, thermoelectric generator
Thermoelectric generators harvesting energy from exhaust gases usually present a temperature mismatch between modules, due to the gradual cooling of the gases along the flow direction. The way modules that produce unequal voltages are connected has a deep impact on the overall power output. A further step in the prediction of thermoelectric production is to consider the complete layout of the thermoelectric modules and not consider them as isolated systems. In this work, a model to predict the electric behavior of thermoelectric generators for automotive applications at different points of operation is presented. The model allows testing of serial-parallel connection configurations. The results present good agreement with experimental data. This model could be used on similar light duty vehicles with similar engines as the engine used in this work and using similar configuration of thermoelectric generators. Simulated scenarios considering realistic operating conditions in a light duty... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC bus, IED, PCD, PCS, smart grid, STS, switchgear panel
In this study, we describe the development of a plug-in type of switchgear that can control bidirectional power flow. This switchgear system can connect distributed generations such as photovoltaic and wind turbine generation, and AC and DC loads. The proposed switchgear system consists of an inverter for connecting distributed generations and DC load, a static transfer switch (STS) that can control and interrupt the bidirectional power flow, and an intelligent electronic device (IED) that can control each facility using a communication system. Since the topology inside the switchgear is composed of DC bus, it can be operated as a plug-in type of system that can be used by simply connecting the converters of various distributed generations to the inverter in the developed switchgear system. In this study, we describe the overall structure of the proposed switchgear system and the operation of the components. April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy supply diversity, geographic diversity, interconnections, islands, marine energy, power system stability, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind energy
To meet climate change goals, the decarbonisation of the UK electricity supply is crucial. Increased geographic diversity and resource use could help provide grid and market stability and reduce CO2 intensive balancing actions. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of geographic diversity and Scottish island renewable energy on the UK network. This has been done by using the energy market modelling software PLEXOS with results validated using data for 2017/18. The model considers spatial diversification and forecasting errors by modelling day-ahead and intra-day markets with nodes for each distribution network operator region and island group. It was concluded that Scottish island renewable capacity could have a stabilising effect on the variability of renewables in terms of electricity generated, prices and forecasting errors, from the timescale of the entire year down to hours. Energy-Saving Strategies of Axial Flow Fans for Direct Dry Cooling System
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-cooled condenser, axial flow fan, direct dry cooling system, energy-saving, heat exchanger, power consumption
The operating conditions of axial flow fans are closely related to the thermo-flow characteristics of the mechanical draft direct dry cooling system. Moreover, the uneven distribution of cooling air driven by axial flow fans may lead to the deterioration of the heat transfer capacity of air-cooled condensers (ACCs). Therefore, developing energy-saving operating methods for axial flow fans is very meaningful. In this work, two kinds of adjustment strategies to make the flow field more uniform are proposed for a 2 × 300 MW direct dry cooling power-generating unit. The performance of ACCs in the prevailing wind direction is predicted with the help of the macro heat exchanger model. It is found that the inlet air temperatures of fans are significantly reduced by proposed strategies, especially at high wind speeds. Moreover, the minimum cooling air can meet the cooling demand of ACCs for the strategy which made the air flow rates of all fans consistent. Compared with the case without adjust... [more]

Mechanistic Grey-Box Modeling of a Packed-Bed Regenerator for Industrial Applications
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: data-driven modeling, grey-box modeling, packed-bed regenerator, physical modeling, sensible thermal energy storage
Thermal energy storage is essential to compensate for energy peaks and troughs of renewable energy sources. However, to implement this storage in new or existing industries, robust and accurate component models are required. This work examines the development of a mechanistic grey-box model for a sensible thermal energy storage, a packed-bed regenerator. The mechanistic grey-box model consists of physical relations/equations and uses experimental data to optimize specific parameters of these equations. Using this approach, a basic model and two models with extensions I and II, which vary in their number from Equations (3) to (5) and parameters (3 to 6) to be fitted, are proposed. The three models’ results are analyzed and compared to existing models of the regenerator, a data-driven and a purely physical model. The results show that all developed grey-box models can extrapolate and approximate the physical behavior of the regenerator well. In particular, the extended model II shows exc... [more]

Adaptive Mode Selection Strategy for Series-Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Variable Power Reserve
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive mode selection, drivability, hybrid electric vehicle, mode switching, variable power reserve
When the series-parallel hybrid electric vehicle exits the pure electric mode, the battery provides power for the drive motor and integrated starter generator (ISG) to drive the vehicle and start the engine. If the battery discharge power is insufficient, the driving power will drop, which will inhibit the vehicle from accelerating and impair drivability. Considering that the mode selection strategy determines the timing of mode switching, this paper proposes an adaptive mode selection strategy based on variable power reserve to allow the vehicle to switch mode considering the battery power limitation. The effectiveness of this strategy is verified by simulation, and its influence on fuel consumption and battery utilization is analyzed. Compared with the mode selection strategy based on logic thresholds at the same initial battery state of charge (SOC), under the high-speed and aggressive US06 cycle, the total driving power drop is reduced by 74.2%, and the over-discharge power of the... Keywords: compressed gaseous hydrogen, hydrogen infrastructure, hydrogen transport, liquid hydrogen, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, truck routing
Carbon-free transportation is envisaged by means of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) propelled by hydrogen that originates from renewably electricity. However, there is a spatial and temporal gap in the production and demand of hydrogen. Therefore, hydrogen storage and transport remain key challenges for sustainable transportation with FCEVs.
