Optimal Energy Management for Hybrid Electric Vehicles Based on Dynamic Programming and Receding Horizon
Pierpaolo Polverino, Ivan Arsie, Cesare Pianese
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic programming, electrified powertrain, energy management strategy, hybrid vehicles, look-ahead control, optimal control, receding horizon
Fuel consumption and emissions in parallel hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are directly linked to the way the load request to the wheels is managed between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor powered by the battery. A significant reduction in both consumption and emissions can be achieved by optimally controlling the power split on an entire driving mission (full horizon—FH). However, the entire driving path is often not predictable in real applications, hindering the fulfillment of the advantages gained through such an approach. An improvement can be achieved by exploiting more information available onboard, such as those derived from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and vehicle connectivity (V2X). With this aim, the present work presents the design and verification, in a simulated environment, of an optimized controller for HEVs energy management, based on dynamic programming (DP) and receding horizon (RH) approaches. The control algorithm entails the parti... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fast frequency reserve, frequency controller, frequency stability, hybrid wind power plants, supercapacitors, system inertia
The concept of hybrid wind power plants (HWPPs) that consist of wind, solar and batteries has received a lot of attention, since HWPPs provide a number of advantages thanks to the complementary nature of wind and solar energy and the flexibility of batteries. Nevertheless, converter-based technologies, as interfaces of HWPPs to the utility grid, contribute to the reduction of total system inertia, making the system more volatile and creating additional threats to frequency stability. To address these operational challenges, the capability of supercapacitors (SCs) to provide fast frequency reserve (FFR) is explored in this paper to enhance the frequency response of the HWPP. Two topologies for integrating SCs into the HWPP are proposed: (1) connecting SC to the DC link of wind turbine (WT) via a DC-DC converter interface, (2) directly connecting SC to the DC link of WT without converter interface. Frequency controllers at the asset level are proposed for these two topologies accordingly... [more]

This paper addresses the implementation and optimization of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) for the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) sensorless control using an ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller. A various optimization levels based on arithmetic calculation reduction was implemented in ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller. The execution time of EKF estimator was reduced from 260.4 μs to 37.7 μs without loss of accuracy. To further reduce EKF execution time, the separation of a Kalman gain and covariance matrices calculation from prediction and measurement state update, a novel method was proposed, and the performance of it an EKF estimator with separation of a Kalman gain and covariance matrices calculation from prediction and measurement state update was analyzed. Simulation and experiments results validate that the proposed technique could provide the same accuracy with less computation time. A tendency of minimum Kalman gain and covariance matrices calculation frequency from rotor ele... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Marx generator, pulsed power, SiC-MOSFET, solid-state
The paper introduces a new design of Marx generator based on modular stages using Silicon Carbide MOSFETs (SiC-MOSFET) aimed to be used in biomedical applications. In this process, living cells are treated with intense nanosecond Pulsed Electrical Field (nsPEF). The electric field dose should be controlled by adjusting the pulse parameters such as amplitude, repetition rate and pulse-width. For this purpose, the structure of the proposed generator enables negative pulses with a quasi-rectangular shape, controllable amplitude, pulse-width and repetition-rate. A complete simulation study was conducted in ANSYS-Simplorer to verify the overall performance. A compact, modular prototype of Marx generator was designed with 1.7 kV rated SiC-MOSFETs and, finally, a set of experiments confirmed all expected features.

Keywords: combined heat and power plant, Flügel formula, heat balance characteristic of turbine, heating extraction steam flow rate, information fusion, soft sensor
Heating extraction steam (HEXTR) flow rate is the key parameter to determine the heat load of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant and the safe operation area of the steam turbine of CHP plant. Due to the difficulty of direct measurement, a soft measurement method of this flow rate is proposed. First, three calculation methods based on different principles are given: the Flügel formula of the steam turbine method, the butterfly valve flow characteristics method, and the improvement of heat balance characteristic of the turbine method. Then, a soft-sensing method through frequency complementary information fusion is proposed to combine the advantages of the three methods. The specific fusion algorithm uses Flügel formula of the turbine as a static model, the heat balance characteristic of the turbine to correct the coefficient in the model, and the butterfly valve characteristic to realize dynamic compensation. Finally, the proposed soft sensor is applied in the monitoring system of a... [more]

Keywords: D-mode GaN HEMT, P-Cascode GaN HEMT, single gate driver, synchronous buck converter
This paper attempts to disclose a new GaN-based device, called the P-Cascode GaN HEMT, which uses only a single gate driver to control both the D-mode GaN and PMOS transistors. The merit of this synchronous buck converter is that it can reduce the circuit complexity of the synchronous buck converter, which is widely used to provide non-isolated power for low-voltage and high-current supply to system chips; therefore, the power conversion efficiency of the converter can be improved. In addition, the high side switch using a single D-mode GaN HEMT, which has no body diode, can prevent the bi-directional flow and thus reduce the power loss and cost compared to a design based on a series of two opposite MOSFETs. The experiment shows that the proposed P-Cascode GaN HEMT efficiency is above 98% when it operates at 500 kHz with 6 W output. With the input voltage at 12 V, the synchronous buck converter provides an adjustable regulated output voltage from 1.2 V to 10 V while delivering a maximu... [more]

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current sensor, fault detector, FOC, FTC, PMSM
The paper describes a vector-controlled fault tolerant control (FTC) structure for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. As a control algorithm, the classical field oriented control was applied. For the proper operation of this drive, minimum two current sensors are necessary, however, in the FTC drives additional redundant transducers are applied. Each measuring sensor, including current sensors, are susceptible to damage and can lead to unstable operation of the drive. The presented control structure, with a diagnostic and compensation system, is robust to the typical current sensor faults—lack of signal, intermittent signal, variable gain, signal noise and signal saturation. The fault detection algorithm is based on the signal method. The fault diagnostic system is tested in two control algorithms—the scalar control and vector control ones—to demonstrate the transient of the faulted signals, detection signals and detection time. After current sensor fault appearance, its... [more]

Keywords: connected hybrid electric vehicle, energy management, energy-saving, receding horizon control
This paper develops a model predictive multi-objective control framework based on an adaptive cruise control (ACC) system to solve the energy allocation and battery state of charge (SOC) maintenance problems of hybrid electric vehicles in the car-following scenario. The proposed control framework is composed of a car-following layer and an energy allocation layer. In the car-following layer, a multi-objective problem is solved to maintain safety and comfort, and the generated speed sequence in the prediction time domain is put forward to the energy allocation layer. In the energy allocation layer, an adaptive equivalent-factor-based consumption minimization strategy with the predicted velocity sequences is adopted to improve the engine efficiency and fuel economy. The equivalent factor reflects the extent of SOC variation, which is used to maintain the battery SOC level when optimizing the energy. The proposed controller is evaluated in the New York City Cycle (NYCC) driving cycle and... [more]

Keywords: Burckhardt traction model, driving force observer, electric tractors (ET), sliding mode control, wheel slip control
Estimation and control of wheel slip is a critical consideration in preventing loss of traction, minimizing power consumptions, and reducing soil disturbance. An approach to wheel slip estimation and control, which is robust to sensor noises and modeling imperfection, has been investigated in this study. The proposed method uses a simplified form of wheels longitudinal dynamic and the measurement of wheel and vehicle speeds to estimate and control the optimum slip. The longitudinal wheel forces were estimated using a robust sliding mode observer. A straightforward and simple interpolation method, which involves the use of Burckhardt tire model, instantaneous values of wheel slip, and the estimate of longitudinal force, was used to determine the optimum slip ratio that guarantees maximum friction coefficient between the wheel and the road surface. An integral sliding mode control strategy was also developed to force the wheel slip to track the desired optimum value. The algorithm was te... [more]

Keywords: ABC, GAPID controller, Optimization, PSO, WOA
This work deals with metaheuristic optimization algorithms to derive the best parameters for the Gaussian Adaptive PID controller. This controller represents a multimodal problem, where several distinct solutions can achieve similar best performances, and metaheuristics optimization algorithms can behave differently during the optimization process. Finding the correct proportionality between the parameters is an arduous task that often does not have an algebraic solution. The Gaussian functions of each control action have three parameters, resulting in a total of nine parameters to be defined. In this work, we investigate three bio-inspired optimization methods dealing with this problem: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm, and the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). The computational results considering the Buck converter with a resistive and a nonlinear load as a case study demonstrated that the methods were capable of solving the task. The re... [more]

Keywords: AP1000®, homogenized cross-sections, MPACT, neutronics, pressurized water reactor, sensitivity analysis, two-step method
In the two-step method for nuclear reactor simulation, lattice physics calculations are performed to compute homogenized cross-sections for a variety of burnups and lattice configurations. A nodal code is then used to perform full-core analysis using the pre-calculated homogenized cross-sections. One source of uncertainty introduced in this method is that the lattice configuration or depletion conditions typically do not match a pre-calculated one from the lattice physics simulations. Therefore, some interpolation model must be used to estimate the homogenized cross-sections in the nodal code. This current study provides a methodology for sensitivity analysis to quantify the impact of state variables on the homogenized cross-sections. This methodology also allows for analyses of the historical effect that the state variables have on homogenized cross-sections. An application of this methodology on a lattice for the Westinghouse AP1000® reactor is presented where coolant density, fuel t... [more]

This paper introduces a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy for the optimal energy management of a district whose buildings are equipped with vertically placed Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The vertically placed BIPV systems are able to cover larger areas of buildings’ surfaces, as compared with conventional rooftop PV systems, and reach their peak of production during winter and spring, which renders them suitable for energy harvesting especially in urban areas. Driven by both these relative advantages, the proposed strategy aims to maximize the district’s autonomy from the external grid, which is achieved through the cooperation of interactive buildings. Therefore, the major contribution of this study is the management and optimal cooperation of a group of buildings, each of which is equipped with its own system of vertical BIPV panels and BESS, carried out by an MPC strategy. The proposed control scheme consists of thr... [more]

The sustainable agriculture cultivation in greenhouses is constantly evolving thanks to new technologies and methodologies able to improve the crop yield and to solve the common concerns which occur in protected environments. In this paper, an MPC-based control system has been realized in order to control the indoor air temperature in a high efficiency greenhouse. The main objective is to determine the optimal control signals related to the water mass flow rate supplied by a heat pump. The MPC model allows a predefined temperature profile to be tracked with an energy saving approach. The MPC has been implemented as a multiobjective optimization model that takes into account the dynamic behavior of the greenhouse in terms of energy and mass balances. The energy supply is provided by a ground coupled heat pump (GCHP) and by the solar radiation while the energy losses related to heat transfers across the glazed envelope. The proposed MPC method was applied in a smart innovative greenhouse... [more]

Keywords: battery charging, electric vehicle, field-oriented control, grid-to-vehicle, Model Predictive Control, unified power converter, vehicle-to-grid
An electric vehicle (EV) usually has two main power converters, namely one for the motor drive system and another for the battery-charging system. Considering the similarities between both converters, a new unified power converter for motor drive and battery charging of EVs is propounded in this paper. By using a single unified power converter, the cost, volume, and weight of the power electronics are reduced, thus also making possible a reduction in the final price of the EV. Moreover, the proposed unified power converter has the capability of bidirectional power flow. During operation in traction mode, the unified power converter controls motor driving and regenerative braking. Additionally, during operation in battery-charging mode, with the EV plugged into the electrical power grid, the unified power converter controls the power flow for slow or fast battery charging (grid-to-vehicle (G2V) mode), or for discharging of the batteries (vehicle-to-grid (V2G) mode). Keywords: adaptive Tabu search, energy saving, fuzzy control, single-phase induction motor
This paper presents an energy-saving approach for electric pumps widely used in agriculture. A capacitor-run single-phase induction motor is used with a centrifugal pump. An appropriate energy-saving frequency and voltage calculation algorithm is proposed in this paper. The fuzzy controller is used to control the water flow rate of the electric pump. Moreover, the adaptive Tabu search algorithm is used to identify induction motor parameters. The experimental results from the energy-saving approach are compared with the valve control and V/f control in terms of input power and power factor. From the experimental results, the electric pump using the proposed energy-saving approach consumes minimum input power compared with other approaches. In addition, the energy-saving approach can provide a good power factor at any flow rate.

Keywords: Model Predictive Control, modular multilevel converter, power management, real-time digital simulation
The multi-modular converter (MMC) technology is becoming the preferred option for the increased deployment of variable renewable energy sources (RES) into electrical power systems. MMC is known for its reliability and modularity. The fast adjustment of the MMC’s active/reactive powers, within a few milliseconds, constitutes a major research challenge. The solution to this challenge will allow accelerated integration of RES, without creating undesirable stability issues in the future power system. This paper presents a variant of model predictive control (MPC) for the grid-connected MMC. MPC is defined using a Laguerre function to reduce the computational burden. This is achieved by reducing the number of parameters of the MMC cost function. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed MPC is verified in the real-time digital simulations. Additionally, in this paper, a comparison between an accurate mathematical and real-time simulation (RSCAD) model of an MMC is given. The compari... [more]

Keywords: decoupled control, direct power control, doubly fed induction generator, grid voltage imbalance, power generation, torque ripple cancellation, unbalanced power grid
The paper presents a decoupled direct power-controlled (DPC) of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) connected to an unbalanced power grid, executed in an orthogonal stationary reference frame related to the stator side. The control allows to maintain constant electromagnetic torque despite stator connection to the unbalanced power grid and to achieve controllable low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability. The control does not require any signal decomposition into positive and negative sequence order, which allows to reduce its complexity and computational requirements. Then, the paper presents positive influence of rotor current feedback in the stator-controlled reference frame on control performance. It facilitates significant transient reduction and minor steady state control improvement. All the mentioned functionalities were validated both in simulation and in laboratory conditions and the obtained results are described in the paper.

Future electrical power systems will be dominated by power electronic converters, which are deployed for the integration of renewable power plants, responsive demand, and different types of storage systems. The stability of such systems will strongly depend on the control strategies attached to the converters. In this context, laboratory-scale setups are becoming the key tools for prototyping and evaluating the performance and robustness of different converter technologies and control strategies. The performance evaluation of control strategies for dynamic frequency support using fast active power regulation (FAPR) requires the urgent development of a suitable power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) setup. In this paper, the most prominent emerging types of FAPR are selected and studied: droop-based FAPR, droop derivative-based FAPR, and virtual synchronous power (VSP)-based FAPR. A novel setup for PHIL-based performance evaluation of these strategies is proposed. The setup combines the adva... [more]

Keywords: ball joint, finite element method, roughness, STM microscope, suspension, vehicle
The following paper describes research on vehicle suspension elements: the ball joints. The worn surface roughness of selected ball pins and their bearings was compared in terms of vehicle mileage, utilization period, and car model. Ball pin roughness was measured using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), whereas for the bearing surface, a profilometer was used. The aim of this study was to determine the resistive torque in an unloaded ball joint. Using the finite element method, models of the unloaded ball joint were analyzed in two scenarios: with and without interference between the worn ball and its bearing. Calculated values of resistive torques in the ball joint were compared, and recommendations were given relative to the mileage and the time after which it was necessary to perform verification or replacement of the ball joints.
A CUSUM-Based Approach for Condition Monitoring and Fault Diagnosis of Wind Turbines

April 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, CUSUM test, Fault Detection, multiple linear regression, SCADA data, structural change, wind turbine
This paper presents a cumulative sum (CUSUM)-based approach for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of wind turbines (WTs) using SCADA data. The main ideas are to first form a multiple linear regression model using data collected in normal operation state, then monitor the stability of regression coefficients of the model on new observations, and detect a structural change in the form of coefficient instability using CUSUM tests. The method is applied for on-line condition monitoring of a WT using temperature-related SCADA data. A sequence of CUSUM test statistics is used as a damage-sensitive feature in a control chart scheme. If the sequence crosses either upper or lower critical line after some recursive regression iterations, then it indicates the occurrence of a fault in the WT. The method is validated using two case studies with known faults. The results show that the method can effectively monitor the WT and reliably detect abnormal problems.
