Non-Matrix Quick Pass: A Rapid Evaluation Method for Natural Fractures and Karst Features in Core
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonate reservoir characterization, core logging, dual porosity, fractures, karst, non-matrix characterization
Mechanical and chemical processes experienced by carbonate rocks result in a complex network of natural fractures and dissolution features that have direct implications on porosity, permeability, and connectivity in reservoirs. Characterization of natural fractures is best done in core; however, it can be time-consuming due to the large amounts of individual features present and the long list of attributes typically collected for each feature. Additionally, karst features in core, such as vugs and small cavities, are seldom characterized in a quantitative way or are overlooked. We introduce a new methodology, called the non-matrix quick pass (NMQP), which allows for the collection of non-matrix features in a rapid yet quantitative fashion at a rate of 12 to 20 m of core per hour. The NMQP methodology offers enough vertical resolution so that observations can be integrated with other wellbore data types (e.g., wireline logs, well tests, and production logs). This method also yields esti... [more]

Bioconversion of the Brown Tunisian Seaweed Halopteris scoparia: Application to Energy
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-hydrogen, by-product, Ethanol, Fermentation, Halopteris scoparia, lipid
The brown Tunisian seaweed Halopteris scoparia was used as a feedstock for producing renewable bioethanol, biogas, and biodiesel to demonstrate the proof of concept for the North African energy sector. A quantitative and qualitative quantification of H. scoparia composition using different colorimetric methods was completed to highlight its bioconversion potential. These substrate inputs were subjected to anaerobic fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce bioethanol. The materials were also used to generate bio-hydrogen and volatile fatty acids during dark fermentation by a bacterial consortium and using the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. The lipids were extracted and trans-esterified to Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAMEs), and their profiles were then analyzed with gas chromatography (GC). A significant ratio of the bioethanol, e.g., 0.35 g ethanol/g DW substrate, was produced without pretreatment, consistent with the theoretical Gay-Lussac yield. The production of the... [more]

Organic Salt Hydrate as a Novel Paradigm for Thermal Energy Storage
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deliquescence, organic salt hydrate, thermochemical energy storage, thermogravimetric dynamic vapor sorption
The use of inorganic salt hydrates for thermochemical energy storage (TCS) applications is widely investigated. One of the drawbacks that researchers face when studying this class of materials is their tendency to undergo deliquescence phenomena. We here proposed and investigated, for the first time, the possibility of using organic salt hydrates as a paradigm for novel TCS materials with low water solubility, that is, more resistance to deliquescence, a tendency to coordinate a high number of water molecules and stability under operating conditions. The organic model compound chosen in this study was calcium; 7-[[2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetyl]amino]-3-[(2-methyl-5,6-dioxo-1H-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)sulfanylmethyl]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylate, known as calcium ceftriaxone, hereafter named CaHS (calcium hydrated salt), a water-insoluble organic salt, which can combine up to seven water molecules. Review and Prospect of Legal Development in Commercial Nuclear Energy
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: atomic energy law, commercial nuclear energy, nuclear facilities, nuclear law
As a major developer of commercial nuclear energy, China saw its developments improve year by year in relevant key indicators such as the number of commercial nuclear facilities, total installed capacity and electricity generation. Accordingly, the legal system of commercial nuclear energy in China has also improved in the past four decades in three phases: Beginning (1985−2002), Growth (2003−2015) and Maturity (2016−now). The legal needs of nuclear energy development, operation, supervision and regulation has been basically met with great focuses on authorities, nuclear safety licensing, disposal of radioactive nuclear wastes and nuclear materials. However, problems still exist, including an inefficient legal system, complicated organic system and inadequate supervision on those regulatory bodies. Looking ahead, efforts should be made in three aspects for safe and healthy development in China’s commercial nuclear industry, specifically, a better relevant legal system, safety managemen... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: construction waste, ethylene vinyl acetate-resin surface modification, expanded polystyrene, lightweight controlled low strength materials, oil and gas pipelines
Due to its particularity and importance, long-distance oil and gas pipelines need to be well protected from damage by backfill materials. In this study, construction waste and expanded polystyrene (EPS) were used to replace conventional fine aggregate, and ethylene vinyl acetate-resin (EVA) was used to modify the surface of EPS to prepare lightweight controlled low strength materials (CLSM). Lightweight CLSM was tested in mechanics and physics and its microstructure was studied using microscopic analysis methods. The results revealed that the surface modification of EPS by EVA could greatly improve the compatibility of EPS with inorganic cementitious materials and prepare CLSM with a fluidity greater than 200 mm. EPS and cement content in cementitious materials play an important role in the development of material strength. When the volume ratio of EPS to construction waste was 2, and the content of cement in the cementitious materials was 35%, CLSM’s unconfined compressive strength at... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: civil engineering, composite materials, compressive strength, metakaolin, thermal conductivity, thermal insulation
Irreversible climate change, including atmosphere temperature extremes, is one of the most important issues of the present time. In this context, the construction industry requires solutions for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings through feedback between temperature adjustment inside buildings and better isolation of the external parts of buildings. Newly developed thermal insulation materials play an important role in this strategy. This paper presents the foamed geopolymer based on metakaolin that can be used as a modern facade material. In order to further improve its thermal insulation properties, the composition of geopolymer was modified with organic substances, i.e., perlite and cellulose fibers (30% and 50% of the volume). The thermal conductivity and insulation properties, density, mineral phases, absorbability, and compressive strength were improved for composite materials. It has been shown that the final properties of the foamed geopolymer can be controlled to a... [more]

Keywords: carbon soot particles, fixed-bed reactor, microscopic morphology, oxidation rate, TEM
Diesel engine exhaust pipes are in a high-temperature and high-oxygen environment; the carbon soot formed by fuel combustion will be partially oxidized, and its physicochemical properties will change significantly after oxidation. In order to study the effect law of partial oxidation on carbon soot particles emitted from automobiles, commercial carbon black samples (Printex-U carbon) were selected to replace actual carbon soot particles in this paper, and experiments were conducted on a fixed-bed catalytic oxidation device to obtain carbon soot particles with four oxidation rates by varying the time duration of oxygen introduction. Subsequently, the microstructure images of the corresponding carbon soot particles were obtained using TEM and measured after image processing with ImageJ software. The results showed that the average particle size, particle layer spacing, and distortion of carbon soot particles gradually decreased with the increase in oxidation rate. Moreover, the basic par... Methane Adsorption Properties in Biomaterials: A Possible Route to Gas Storage and Transportation
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: agricultural wastes, gas adsorption, methane hydrate, natural gas storage
Methane can be stored in biomaterials rapidly in hydrate form with low energy consumption. Considering the high cost of biomaterials (vegetables or fruits), agricultural wastes may be more practical. In this work, the characteristics of methane storage in two low-cost agricultural wastes, eggplant, and static water, are studied and compared. The methane adsorption rates and capacities were greatly enhanced in three biomaterials compared with that in the static water, while only corncob pith maintained relatively high gas adsorption capacity (72 v/v) and adsorption rate (~0.0300 MPa/min) in repeatable gas adsorption-desorption processes. Further investigations on the gas adsorption behavior in the corncob pith revealed that the porous structure of corncob pith generates larger specific surface areas, providing more nucleation sites for hydrate nucleation. In addition, the hydrophobic and hydrophilic performance of corncob pith components also affect the hydrate formation. The porous str... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acetaldehyde lyase, acetoin, alcohol dehydrogenase, cascade enzymatic reactions, immobilization, NADH oxidase
Acetoin, a four-carbon hydroxyl-keto compound, is used in the food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. The cascade enzymatic production is considered a promising and efficient method to produce acetoin. However, the stability and compatibility of the enzymes under the same catalytic conditions are challenges that need to be resolved. In this work, alcohol dehydrogenase, acetaldehyde lyase, and NADH oxidase were selected to work at the same conditions to efficiently convert ethanol into acetoin. These three enzymes were immobilized on epoxy-modified magnetic nanomaterials to obtain highly stable biocatalysts. The stability and the immobilization conditions, including temperature, pH, enzyme−carrier ratio, and immobilization time, were optimized to obtain the immobilized enzymes with a high catalytic activity. The cascade reactions catalyzed by the immobilized enzymes yielded a high conversion of 90%, suggesting that the use of immobilized enzymes is a promising way to produce acet... [more]

Physical Properties of Ti45Zr38Fe17 Alloy and Its Amorphous Hydride
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: amorphous alloys, hydrogen-storage materials, magnetic properties, neutron diffraction, quasicrystalline alloys
The alloys based on Ti-Zr are considered an excellent candidate for hydrogen storage applications. In this communication, we report the results of Fe substitution for Ni in the well-known Ti45Zr38Ni17 compound. The parent and related compounds can be obtained as amorphous powders, transforming into the quasicrystalline phase (i-phase) after annealing. The amorphous Ti45Zr38Fe17 phase is transformed into the icosahedral quasicrystalline state, and it is a quasi-continuous process. The i-phase is well-developed close to 500 °C. At higher temperatures, the quasicrystal structure transforms into the other phase: the w-phase (an approximant to the crystalline phase) and another crystal phase with a small addition of the FeZr3 and the Fe2(ZrTi)3. The amorphous Ti45Zr38Fe17 phases can be hydrogenated while maintaining the amorphous nature, which constitutes another very fascinating research field for our group. Subject: Materials
Keywords: expanded graphite, paraffin wax, phase change material, pore structure
In order to study the effects of the pore structure and pore size of porous carrier material on the phase transformation behavior of composite phase change materials (CPCMs), the pore structure and pore sizes of three different sizes of expanded graphites (EGs) (50, 80, 100 mesh) were studied using N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscopy. Then, the thermal characterization of CPCMs prepared with paraffin wax and EGs were tested using differential scanning calorimetry and a thermal conductivity tester. The results showed that EG-50 had a more web-like pore structure, and thus, higher adsorption capacity for paraffin wax. The addition of EG could reduce the supercooling degree of CPCMs and improve the thermal conductivity of CPCMs. CPCM with EG-50 had better performance due to its large specific surface area and low interfacial resistance. Compared with paraffin wax, the phase transition temperature (ΔT) of CPCMs increased slightly and the latent heat of CPCMS... [more]

Numerical Study of the Thermal and Fluid Behavior of Three-Dimensional Microstructures for Efficient Catalytic Converters
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D microstructures, catalytic reaction, CFD simulation, microlattice, pressure drop, thermal response
Global regulations for emission reduction are continually becoming stricter, and conventional catalytic converters may be efficient in the future because of their low conversion efficiencies at cold-start. In this study, to overcome the performance limitations of conventional catalytic converters, a three-dimensional (3D) microstructured catalytic substrate was designed, and simulations of the fluid flow, heat transfer, and chemical reaction for the proposed catalytic substrates were performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. The effect of the pressure drop on the catalytic conversion efficiency of various 3D microarchitectures was investigated. Due to the three-dimensional microstructure, the fluid flow changed and fluid pressure increased, which led to energy loss. It was confirmed that the abrupt change in flow increased the heat transfer. The findings showed that the fluid flow changed due to the existence of a complex periodic microlattice structure instead of th... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: CNx, copolymerization, nanowire arrays, photoelectrocatalysis, TiO2
Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation is an advanced technology that combines photocatalytic oxidation (PC) and electrolytic oxidation (EC). PEC activity can be greatly enhanced by the PC and EC synergy effect. In this work, novel copolymerized g-C3N4 (denoted as CNx)/TiO2 core-shell nanowire arrays were prepared by chemical vapor deposition. CNx were deposited on the surface of TiO2 nanowire arrays using organic monomer 4,5-dicyanidazole and dicyandiamide as copolymerization precursor. TiO2 nanowire arrays provide a direct and fast electron transfer path, while CNx is a visible light responsive material. After CNx deposition, the light response range of TiO2 is broadened to 600 nm. The deposition of CNx shell effectively improves the PC efficiency and PEC efficiency of TiO2. Under visible light irradiation and 1 V bias potential, the rate constant k of PEC degradation of CNx/TiO2 core-shell nanowire arrays is 0.0069 min−1, which is 72% higher than that of pure TiO2 nanowires. Subject: Materials
Keywords: EOR, FAWAG, fractured reservoir, gas invaded zone, WAG
More than half of all recoverable oil reserves are found in carbonate rocks. Most of these fields are highly fractured and develop different zonations during primary and secondary recovery stages; therefore, they require a different developmental approach than conventional reservoirs. Experimental results for water-alternating gas injection [WAG] and foam-assisted water-alternating gas [FAWAG] injection under secondary and tertiary recovery conditions were used to investigate these enhanced oil recovery [EOR] methods in gas-invaded reservoirs. The relative permeability curves of the cores and the fitting foam parameters were derived from these experiments through history matching. These findings were then used in a quarter five-spot, cross-sectional, and a sector model of a carbonate reservoir where a double five-spot setup was implemented. The fracture and matrix properties’ impact on the recovery was illustrated through the cross-sectional model. The gas mobility reduction effect of... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioliquid, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, recirculation, wood waste
The characteristics of bioliquid produced through the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of wood wastes and the effects of recirculation on hydrochar production were analyzed. The organic acids and total organic carbon of bioliquid increased with progressive recirculation, whereas intermediate byproducts decreased. Hydrochar production by bioliquid recirculation increased mass yield, carbon content, caloric value, and energy yield of the former, while improving its quality as a solid refuse fuel. We concluded that bioliquid recirculation promoted HTC, as demonstrated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, contrary to predictions, a relatively constant quantity of bioliquid was generated in each step, indicating that its continuous reuse is feasible. Therefore, bioliquid recirculation can improve hydrochar production while simultaneously mitigating the environmental impact of wastewater generation. Keywords: coating, electrochemical performance, lithium niobate, nickel-rich NMC, wet process
Due to their safety and high power density, one of the most promising types of all-solid-state lithium batteries is the one made with the argyrodite solid electrolyte (ASE). Although substantial efforts have been made toward the commercialization of this battery, it is still challenged by some technical issues. One of these issues is to prevent the side reactions at the interface of the ASE and the cathode active material (CAM). A solution to address this issue is to coat the CAM particles with a material that is compatible with both ASE and CAM. Prior studies show that the lithium niobate, LiNbO3, (LNO) is a promising material for coating CAM particles to reduce the interfacial side reactions. However, no systematic study is available in the literature to show the effect of coating LNO on CAM performance. This paper aims to quantify the effect of LNO coating on the electrochemical performance of a nickel-rich CAM. The electrochemical performance parameters that are studied are the cap... [more]

Spatial Fractional Darcy’s Law on the Diffusion Equation with a Fractional Time Derivative in Single-Porosity Naturally Fractured Reservoirs
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Caputo fractional derivative, fractal porous media, naturally fractured reservoir, Weyl fractional derivative
Due to the complexity imposed by all the attributes of the fracture network of many naturally fractured reservoirs, it has been observed that fluid flow does not necessarily represent a normal diffusion, i.e., Darcy’s law. Thus, to capture the sub-diffusion process, various tools have been implemented, from fractal geometry to characterize the structure of the porous medium to fractional calculus to include the memory effect in the fluid flow. Considering infinite naturally fractured reservoirs (Type I system of Nelson), a spatial fractional Darcy’s law is proposed, where the spatial derivative is replaced by the Weyl fractional derivative, and the resulting flow model also considers Caputo’s fractional derivative in time. The proposed model maintains its dimensional balance and is solved numerically. The results of analyzing the effect of the spatial fractional Darcy’s law on the pressure drop and its Bourdet derivative are shown, proving that two definitions of fractional derivatives... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: composite structural model, dielectric properties, micro-nano composite materials, nonlinear conductivity
The dielectric behavior of insulations is a key factor affecting the development of anti-corona materials for generators. Epoxy resin (EP), as the matrix, is blended with inorganic fillers of micron SiC and nano SiO2 to investigate the effect of micro and nano doping on the conductivity and breakdown mechanism of the composites. Using experimental and simulation analysis, it is found that the effect of nano-SiO2 doping concentration on the conductivity is related to the dispersion of SiC particles. The lower concentration of SiO2 could decrease the conductivity of the composites. The conductivity increases with raising the nano-SiO2 doping concentration to a critical value. Meanwhile, the breakdown field strength of the composites decreases with the rising content of SiC in constant SiO2 and increases with more SiO2 when mixed with invariable SiC. When an equivalent electric field is applied to the samples, the electric field at the interface of micron particles is much stronger than t... [more]
