Research on the Influence of Power-Supply Mode and Copper-Shielding Layer on the Loss of Cryogenic Permanent Magnet Motor for LNG Pump
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: copper-shielding layer, cryogenic motor, motor loss, power supply mode
In order to study the method for reducing the losses in cryogenic permanent magnet motors for LNG pumps, the design of a submersible cryogenic permanent magnet brushless DC motor is presented in this paper. First, the materials used in the motor were tested at room temperature and at a low temperature, and the BH curve and BP curve of the silicon-steel sheet were obtained. Next, DC power supply and PWM power supply were used to analyze the influence of the power-supply mode on the motor loss. Finally, based on the calculation results of the motor loss, the ability of the copper-shielding layer to reduce the motor loss was explored. In the calculation process, the influence of the temperature was considered, and the motor losses at different temperatures were compared and analyzed, which provided a reference for reducing the loss of the cryogenic permanent magnet motor.

Characteristics of Source Rocks and Formation of Reservoir Bitumen in Yinchuan Graben, Ordos Basin, China
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: reservoir bitumen, source rock evaluation, Yinchuan Graben
The Yinchuan Graben is an important potential exploration area that is located on the western margin of the Ordos Basin. Over 8000 m of Cenozoic strata have been formed since the Cretaceous. With an integrated approach of cores observation, logging analysis, and geochemical analysis, we analyzed the characteristics of the Cenozoic source rocks in the Yinchuan Graben and determined the formation and destruction of the fossil oil reservoirs. With type III kerogen, the TOC of the dark mudstone in the Qingshuiying Formation is up to 7.5%, and the Ro is 0.95−1.04%, indicating the source rocks have entered the mature stage but the hydrocarbon generation potential is insufficient. A quantity of reservoir bitumen and oil-bearing fluid inclusions (GOI = 1.67−4%) were found in the Qingshuiying Formation sandstone in Well YQ-1, which indicates a fossil oil reservoir had existed. The fossil oil reservoir and reservoir bitumen were generated by the unexplored pre-Cenozoic strata in the Yinchuan Gra... [more]

Field-Scale Experiment on Deformation Characteristics and Bearing Capacity of Tunnel-Type Anchorage of Suspension Bridge
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deformation characteristics, field-scale experiment, tunnel-type anchorage, ultimate bearing capacity
The suspension pipe bridge has become the main span type due to its large span, light structure, and other characteristics, playing an important role in the construction of the oil and gas backbone network and energy layout. Tunnel-type anchorage (TTA) is a special underground structure that provides anchorage tension for the suspension bridge. Since its form and bearing mechanism are complex, there is no general design method for tunnel-type anchorage so far, and the theoretical and normative research is not mature. In this paper, a field-scale experiment was carried out to study the north side tunnel of Wujiagang Bridge in Yichang, China. According to the similarity principle, the 1:12 tunnel anchor scale model was established. The tunnel anchor scale model is selected in the area adjacent to the actual project site to ensure the similarity of stratigraphic conditions. Through the use of a displacement meter, inclinometer hole, strain gauge, micrometers, and other comprehensive monit... [more]

A Real-Time Fault-Tolerant Control Approach to Ensure the Resiliency of a Self-Healing Multilevel Converter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: converter resiliency, fault-tolerant control, multilevel converter, neutral-point-clamped, self-healing
Ensuring service continuity in safety critical applications is crucial. In some of these applications, multilevel converters play a vital role. In this regard, this research work presents a self-healing fault-tolerant control approach to ensure the resiliency of a neutral-point clamped converter when a semiconductor component encounters an open circuit fault. The defective semiconductor can be a power switch or a clamping diode. By applying the proposed real-time fault-tolerance control, the rated output voltage and output current are restored during post-fault operation. Furthermore, the total harmonic distortion value of the output voltage during application of the real time self-healing control does not increase when compared with that during healthy operation. Since the realization of the proposed control strategy does not require any bidirectional switch, a fast transition between the healthy and fault-tolerant operation is accomplished. Moreover, the proposed structure can ensure... [more]

Exploitation of the Maximum Entropy Principle in the Study of Thermal Conductivity of Silicon, Germanium and Graphene
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: germanium, graphene, maximum entropy principle, moments method, silicon, thermal conductivity
In this paper, we review the application of a recent formula for the lattice thermal conductivity to silicon and germanium, which are two of the most commonly used materials in electronic devices, and to graphene, one the most promising new materials. The formula, which is based on a hierarchy of macroscopic models that generalize the Cattaneo equation, is capable of reproducing the results achieved by means of the well-known Callaway formula. In semiconductors, energy transport is largely due to acoustic phonons, therefore one can choose suitable moments of their occupation numbers as variables of the models. Equations determining the time evolution of these state variables are derived from the Boltzmann−Peierls transport equation by integration, while the maximum entropy principle (MEP) is used to obtain closure relations for the extra variables. All relevant phonon scattering mechanisms are taken into account. We present numerical results regarding the steady-state and dynamical the... [more]

Energy-Based Prognostics for Gradual Loss of Conveyor Belt Tension in Discrete Manufacturing Systems
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: belt tension, conveyor belt deterioration, discrete manufacturing systems, energy-based prognostics model, power consumption, predictive maintenance
This paper presents a data-driven approach for the prognosis of the gradual behavioural deterioration of conveyor belts used for the transportation of pallets between processing workstations of discrete manufacturing systems. The approach relies on the knowledge of the power consumption of a conveyor belt motor driver. Data are collected for two separate cases: the static case and dynamic case. In the static case, power consumption data are collected under different loads and belt tension. These data are used by a prognostic model (artificial neural network (ANN)) to learn the conveyor belt motor driver’s power consumption pattern under different belt tensions and load conditions. The data collected during the dynamic case are used to investigate how the belt tension affects the movement of pallets between conveyor zones. During the run time, the trained prognostic model takes real-time power consumption measurements and load information from a testbench (a discrete multirobot mobile a... [more]

Effect of Endogenous Methane Production: A Step Forward in the Validation of Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) Tests
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anaerobic biodegradability, biomethane potential, blank assays, dairy manure, degassing, digested sewage sludge, granular sludge, inoculum, residual substrate
This work evaluates the influence of the inoculum type, the pre-consumption of the residual substrate and the ratio of blanks’ headspace volume to working volume (Hv Wv−1, 0.6 to 10) on Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) measurements when methane is monitored by gas chromatography. Different inocula were tested: digested sewage sludge—DSS, granular sludge—GS and fresh dairy manure—DM. Microcrystalline cellulose was used as the substrate. BMP surpassed the maximum theoretical value (BMPmax = 414 L kg−1) when methane produced in the blanks was not discounted, showing that degassing cannot stand alone as an alternative to the procedure of discounting the inoculum’s background production. Still, when the residual substrate concentration is high (e.g., in DM), degassing is mandatory because methane produced from its digestion will conceal the methane produced from the substrate in the BMP determination. For inocula with a low residual substrate (e.g., GS), short degassing periods are recom... [more]

Thermal Rectification and Thermal Logic Gates in Graded Alloy Semiconductors
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alloy, logic gate, rectification, thermal rectifier
Classical thermal rectification arises from the contact between two dissimilar bulk materials, each with a thermal conductivity (k) with a different temperature dependence. Here, we study thermal rectification in a Si(1−x)Ge alloy with a spatial dependence on the atomic composition. Rectification factors (R = kmax/kmin) of up to 3.41 were found. We also demonstrate the suitability of such an alloy for logic gates using a thermal AND gate as an example by controlling the thermal conductivity profile via the alloy composition. This system is readily extendable to other alloys, since it only depends on the effective thermal conductivity. These thermal devices are inherently advantageous alternatives to their electric counterparts, as they may be able to take advantage of otherwise undesired waste heat in the surroundings. Furthermore, the demonstration of logic operations is a step towards thermal computation.

Numerical Analysis of Electric Field Characteristics and Interfacial Pressure of HVDC XLPE Cable Joint Considering Load Cycles
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cable accessories, cable insulation, elastic materials, finite element analysis, HVDC cables, interface pressure
Recent innovations in HVDC extruded cable systems require the development of reliable and safe cable accessories. Cable accessories are made of several insulating materials and contain several interfaces. Interfaces made of different materials can cause electric field distortion and localized enhancement of the field. In addition, the internal temperature profiles of accessories differ depending on load conditions or installation environments, which may lead to an increase in or loss of interfacial pressure due to changes in the mechanical properties of materials. The loss of interfacial pressure degrades the contact state between materials. The micro voids formed due to pressure loss can cause partial discharge and tree, which in turn can lead to reduced lifespan and failure of the cable system. Therefore, it is necessary to study the electrical and mechanical characteristics of cable accessories considering various transient states. However, there is a limit to experimentally analyzi... Surface Flashover Characteristics of Epoxy Resin Composites in SF6/CF4 Gas Mixture with DC Voltage
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: epoxy resin, gas-insulated switchgear, insulator, SF6/CF4 mixture, substitute gas, surface charge, surface flashover, synergistic effect
SF6/CF4 mixture is considered a potential substitution for SF6 in gas-insulated equipment owing to the considerable insulation and low temperature characteristics of CF4. This paper concerns the substitutability of the mixture on the surface flashover property. Epoxy resin composites for solid insulators are applied since flashover at the insulator interface often occurs and results in severe damage to the safe operation of the equipment. Two kinds of electrode systems are designed to study DC flashover properties with different electric field uniformities. The obtained result shows that the flashover voltage in the 20% SF6/80% CF4 mixture achieved more than 70% of the voltage in SF6 at the same pressure. The mixture shows considerable synergy in the surface flashover process and performed different tendencies with varying gas pressures and contents under different electrode systems due to the influence of surface accumulated charge. Moreover, it is considered that surface charge due t... [more]

Transient Thermo-Fluid Analysis of Free Falling CuCl and AgCl Droplets with Liquid-to-Solid Phase Change
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cuprous chloride, heat capacity, heat recovery, hydrogen production, liquid-to-solid phase change, numerical analysis, phase changing material (PCM), silver chloride, thermochemical cycles
Hydrogen extraction from nature is a time-consuming and energy-intensive procedure. Most of the current methods of extracting H2 are not eco-friendly, and the thermochemical copper-chlorine (Cu-Cl) cycle is a promising alternative since the ingredients are continuously recycled within the cycle without discharging pollutants into the atmosphere. In this study, the heat recovered from molten cuprous chloride (CuCl) salt produced in one of the reactors and quenched in a water bath is analyzed numerically to determine the amount of thermal energy that can be recovered and improve the efficiency of the Cu-Cl cycle. The quenching cell is simulated in an inert atmosphere since CuCl is highly reactive in the presence of oxygen. The interactions of various diameters of CuCl droplets within nitrogen (N2) are numerically modeled in COMSOL Multiphysics. Silver chloride (AgCl) is also used in this study to validate the phase-change process. It was discovered in this study that during the free fall... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Absorption, biological degradation, emulsion, silicone oil, two-phase partitioning bioreactor, volatile organic compound
The treatment of a synthetic polluted gas containing seven volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was studied using a pilot plant in real industrial conditions. The process combined VOC absorption in silicone oil (PolyDiMethylSiloxane, i.e., PDMS), a biological regeneration of the PDMS in a two-phase partitioning bioreactor (TPPB), and a phase separation including settling and centrifugation. The TPPB was operated at a water/PDMS volume ratio of 75/25. The VOCs treatment performance was efficient during the entire test, corresponding to 10 PDMS regeneration cycles. The analysis of the content of the aqueous phase and PDMS confirmed that VOCs are progressively degraded until mineralization. The nitrogen consumption and the characterization of the microorganisms highlighted possible anoxic functioning of the biomass within the first decanter. Moreover, although the absorption and biodegradation performances were very satisfactory, the separation of all phases, essential for the PDMS recycling... [more]

Active Knowledge Extraction from Cyclic Voltammetry
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: accelerated catalyst discovery, active learning, bayesian model selection, cyclic voltammetry, gaussian processes
Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) is an electro-chemical characterization technique used in an initial material screening for desired properties and to extract information about electro-chemical reactions. In some applications, to extract kinetic information of the associated reactions (e.g., rate constants and turn over frequencies), CV curve should have a specific shape (for example an S-shape). However, often the characterization settings to obtain such curve are not known a priori. In this paper, an active search framework is defined to accelerate identification of characterization settings that enable knowledge extraction from CV experiments. Towards this goal, a representation of CV responses is used in combination with Bayesian Model Selection (BMS) method to efficiently label the response to be either S-shape or not S-shape. Using an active search with BMS oracle, we report a linear target identification in a six-dimensional search space (comprised of thermodynamic, mass transfer, and so... [more]

Methods for Enhancing the Electrical Properties of Epoxy Matrix Composites
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon fibers, carbon fillers, electrical properties, epoxy matrix composites, increase electrical conductivity
This paper presents ways to modify epoxy resin matrix composites to increase their electrical conductivity. Good electrical properties are particularly important for materials used in the construction of vehicles (cars, trains, airplanes) and other objects exposed to lightning (e.g., wind turbines). When the hull plating is made of an electrical conductor (e.g., metal alloys) it acts as a Faraday cage and upon lightning discharge the electrical charge does not cause damage to the structure. Epoxy-resin-based composites have recently been frequently used to reduce the weight of structures, but due to the insulating properties of the resin, various modifications must be applied to improve the conductivity of the composite. The methods to improve the conductivity have been categorized into three groups: modification of the matrix with conductive fillers, modification of the composite reinforcement, and addition of layers with increased electrical conductivity to the composite.

Keywords: cable bentonite, heat dissipation, thermal conductivity, underground power cables
The paper deals with the important challenges in terms of electricity transmission by means of underground cable lines. The power cable’s performance is characterized by an ampacity that represents its maximum electric current-carrying capacity. The ampacity of power cables depends on their ability to diffuse the heat generated by the current flow into the environment. In the performed research, the analysis of the efficiency of heat dissipation from the cable is based on the measurement of temperatures at selected points in individual sections of the cable. As a consequence, the proposed test stand and applied research methodology are vital for the experimental evaluation of the analyzed thermal phenomena in the investigated underground cable lines. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fluorocarbon coating, metal halide perovskite, methylammonium lead iodide film, perovskite stability, plasma deposition
Metal halide perovskites are excellent semiconductors materials that can be exploited in many fields, from the vastly explored photovoltaics to the recent applications in photocatalysis. One of the material’s known limitations is the poor resistance to moisture which induces degradation, triggered by the soft and defective nature of its surface. In this study, we explore non-equilibrium plasmas, to deposit a fluorocarbon polymer on the surface of a MAPbI3 film. We found that the treatment generally enhances the film stability over time, and in certain conditions it improves the perovskite optical properties, demonstrating to be a good strategy aiming defects passivation. Thanks to the solvent-free and non-invasive nature of plasmas, this technique has the potential to be extensively applied to a wide range of perovskite materials targeting different applications.

Keywords: gas transportation, mathematical modeling, parameters modeling, raw materials, stress state of the pipe
Accidents on gas pipelines cause significant damage to the national economy and the economy of the state. Thus, it is necessary to always be prepared for such situations in order to restore the normal operation of the gas pipeline as soon as possible. An important role is played by the execution time of the control actions to localize the accident, pump out the gas, and change the operating modes. It is essential that such control be undertaken, especially if such a situation occurs near a gas-measuring installation for measuring the amount of vented gas. Therefore, the control actions must be error-free in order to quickly stop the non-stationary process, which can lead to undesirable consequences. The paper presents a mathematical model of the operation of the pipeline, developed for the management of the pipeline in an emergency. Subject: Materials
Keywords: economic feasibility, energy indicators, prickly pear cactus, tillage
The Brazilian semi-arid region is marked by a variable spatial-temporal rainfall distribution, concentrated over a 3 to 4 month season. Limited water availability is the main obstacle to the production of forage plants of C3 metabolism (such as corn and soybeans) and C4 metabolism (such as sugarcane), as well as livestock. To mitigate this forage supply, the spineless cactus (SC) has been cultivated in the region, producing high biomass amounts in this harsh environment. Recently, this remarkable capacity to produce biomass has drawn the attention of the renewable energy sector, supported by recent studies demonstrating the feasibility of its biomass as a raw material for bioenergy production. However, before moving to commercial scale, it is necessary to demonstrate that large-scale production has energy and economic viability for clean energy investors. Review of Recent Development in Copper/Carbon Composites Prepared by Infiltration Technique
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon-copper composites, electrical properties, gas infiltration, mechanical properties, processing, thermal properties
The liquid metal infiltration of carbon preformed with copper and its alloys is already an established and well-known process. It is extensively used by the electronic industry to produce heat sinks of power electronics and electric contacts and sliding electric contacts. The advantage of the process is its ability to produce near net shape components with high volume fractions of carbon at a relatively low price. The process is carried out in a vacuum and with low applied pressure. However, a strong dependence on the temperature of infiltration and its precise control is significant for the sound final product. For certain pair carbon matrix−copper alloys, different results could be obtained according to the infiltration temperature. If the temperature is too low, the solidification may occur prior to complete infiltration (high final porosity). When the temperature is too high, undesirable reactions may occur at the fiber−matrix interface (e.g., corrosive carbides). Therefore, there... [more]
