Keywords: energy saving, gas flow in blast furnace, process efficiency
The paper presents an experimental study on the formation process of burden surface texture on the blast furnace throat and its influence on the radial distribution of gas flow. The study was performed with the application of blast furnaces equipped with a bell-type charging device using radio-isotope means for the control of burden surface texture (profile) and burden surface level, i.e., gamma locators for burden surface texture. The study was carried out under the conditions of an operating blast furnace in an iron and steel plant using a unique GEOTAPS system for automated control of geometric and temperature parameters of burden material surface on the blast furnace throat. The influence of the surface texture on the gas flow distribution was also investigated. The possibility of a self-stabilization effect for burden surface texture and gas flow in an operating blast furnace under suitable conditions was experimentally proven. As a result of the experimental study performed, four... [more]

Keywords: Organic PCM, PV module cooling, Thermal absorption, Thermal dissipation
The solar photovoltaic (PV) system is emerging energetically in meeting the present energy demands. A rise in PV module temperature reduces the electrical efficiency, which fails to meet the expected energy demand. The main objective of this research was to study the nature of OM29, which is an organic phase change material (PCM) used for PV module cooling during the summer season. A heat transfer network was developed to minimize the experimental difficulties and represent the working model as an electrical resistance circuit. Most existing PV module temperature (TPV) reduction technology fails to achieve the effective heat transfer from the PV module to PCM because there is an intermediate layer between the PV module and PCM. In this proposed method, liquid PCM is filled directly on the back surface of the PV module to overcome the conduction barrier and PCM attains the thermal energy directly from the PV module. Further, the rear side of the PCM is enclosed by tin combined with alum... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: burnup, Monte Carlo, multi-physics, neutronics, POD, ROM
Fuel burnup analysis requires a high computational cost for full core calculations, due to the amount of the information processed for the total reaction rates in many burnup regions. Indeed, they reach the order of millions or more by a subdivision into radial and axial regions in a pin-by-pin description. In addition, if multi-physics approaches are adopted to consider the effects of temperature and density fields on fuel consumption, the computational load grows further. In this way, the need to find a compromise between computational cost and solution accuracy is a crucial issue in burnup analysis. To overcome this problem, the present work aims to develop a methodological approach to implement a Reduced Order Model (ROM), based on Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), in fuel burnup analysis. We verify the approach on 4 years of burnup of the TMI-1 unit cell benchmark, by reconstructing fuel materials and burnup matrices over time with different levels of approximation. The resul... Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-oil, bioenergy, characterization, Extraction, lignin, pyrolysis
The depletion of fossil fuel reserves and the increase of greenhouse gases (GHG) emission have led to moving towards alternative, renewable, and sustainable energy sources. Lignin is one of the significant, renewable and sustainable energy sources of biomass and pyrolysis is one of the most promising technologies that can convert lignocellulosic biomass to bio-oil. This study focuses on the production and characterization of bio-oil from hardwood and softwood lignin via pyrolysis process using a bench-scale batch reactor. In this study, a mixed solvent extraction method with different polarities was developed to fractionate different components of bio-crude oil into three fractions. The obtained fractions were characterized by using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GCMS). The calculated bio-oil yields from Sigma Kraft lignin and Chouka Kraft lignin were about 30.2% and 24.4%, respectively. The organic solvents, e.g., toluene, methanol, and water were evaluated for chemical ext... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: medium temperature, oil-based CuO nanofluids, orthogonal experiment, thermal impulse stability, two-step preparing method
For solar thermal systems, nanofluids have been proposed as working fluids due to their enhanced optical and thermal properties. However, nanoparticles may agglomerate over time, heating and thermal cycles. Even though pristine nanofluids have proven to enhance performance in low-temperature applications, it is still unclear if nanofluids can meet the reliability requirements of solar thermal applications. For this aim, the present study conducted experiments with several formulations of oil-based CuO nanofluids in terms of their maximum operational temperatures and their stabilities upon cyclic heating. In the samples tested, the maximum temperature ranged from 80 to 150 °C, and the number of heating cycles ranged from 5 to 45, with heating times between 5 to 60 min. The results showed that heating temperature, heating cycles, and heating time all exacerbated agglomeration of samples. Following these experiments, orthogonal experiments were designed to improve the preparation process... [more]

Lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries have been widely applied to portable electronic devices and hybrid vehicles. In order to further enhance performance, the search for advanced anode materials to meet the growing demand for high-performance Li-ion batteries is significant. Fe3C as an anode material can contribute more capacity than its theoretical one due to the pseudocapacity on the interface. However, the traditional synthetic methods need harsh conditions, such as high temperature and hazardous and expensive chemical precursors. In this study, a graphitic carbon encapsulated Fe/Fe3C (denoted as Fe/Fe3C@GC) composite was synthesized as an anode active material for high-performance lithium ion batteries by a simple and cost-effective approach through co-pyrolysis of biomass and iron precursor. The graphitic carbon shell formed by the carbonization of sawdust can improve the electrical conductivity and accommodate volume expansion during discharging. The porous microstructure of the shell... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: aerogel, thermal annealing, transient building physical properties
Nowadays, the usage of thermal insulation materials is widespread not only in the building sector but also in the vehicle industry. The application of fibrous or loose-fill insulation materials like glass wool or mineral wool as well as aerogel is well known. Aerogel-based materials are among the best solid materials for thermal insulation available today; they are prepared through a sol−gel process. For building walls, the glass-fiber-enhanced types are the frequently used ones. They are prepared by adding the liquid−solid solution to the fibrous batting, which is called a sol−gel process. In the present paper, the changes in the most important building physical properties of aerogel blankets after thermal annealing are presented. The samples were subjected to isochronal heat treatments from 70 to 210 °C for 24 h. The changes in the thermal conductivity were followed by Holometrix Lambda heat flow meter, and differential scanning calorimetry results were also recorded. From the measur... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, gas hydrates, in situ Raman spectroscopy, methane, molar ratio
We report an experimental study for the investigation into the suitability of hydrate formation processes for the purification of methane (CH4) from carbon dioxide (CO2) at a sub-cooling temperature of 6 K and a pressure of 4 MPa. The experiments were conducted in a stirred batch reactor. Three different initial CH4/CO2 mixtures with methane fractions of 70.1 mol%, 50.3 mol%, and 28.5 mol% were tested. The separation efficiency was quantified by measuring in situ via Raman spectroscopy the ratios of CH4/CO2 in the gas mixture, the liquid water-rich phase before hydrate formation, and the solid hydrate phase after the onset of the hydrate formation. The results indicated that the main separation effect is obtained due to the preferential dissolution of CO2 into the liquid water-rich phase before the onset of the hydrate formation.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy harvesting, LiPo batteries, self-discharge, storage devices, super-capacitors
This paper aims to study the limitations and performances of the main energy storage devices commonly used in energy harvesting applications, namely super-capacitors (SC) and lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries. The self-discharge phenomenon is the main limitation to the employment of SCs to store energy for a long time, thus reducing efficiency and autonomy of the energy harvesting system. Therefore, the analysis of self-discharge trends was carried out for three different models of commercial SCs, describing the phenomenon in terms of self-discharge rate and internal resistance. In addition, physical interpretations concerning the self-discharge mechanism based on the experimental data are provided, thus explaining the two super-imposed phenomena featured by distinct time constants. Afterwards, the dependence of self-discharge phenomenon from the charging time duration (namely, SCs charged at 5 V and then kept under charge for one or five hours) was analyzed; by comparing the voltage dr... Lithium iron orthosilicate (LFS) cathode can be prepared via the polyol-assisted ball milling method with the incorporation of carbon derived from eggshell membrane (ESM) for improving inherent poor electronic conduction. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirmed the diffraction peaks without any presence of further impure phase. Overall, 9 wt.% of carbon was loaded on the LFS, which was identified using thermogravimetric analysis. The nature of carbon was described using parameters such as monolayer, and average surface area was 53.5 and 24 m2 g−1 with the aid of Langmuir and Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) surface area respectively. The binding energy was observed at 285.66 eV for C−N owing to the nitrogen content in eggshell membrane, which provides more charge carriers for conduction. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images clearly show the carbon coating on the LFS, the porous nature of carbon, and the atom arrangements. From the cyclic voltammetry (CV) curve, the ra... Subject: Materials
Keywords: Coal, grout, high-polymer material
Roof collapse and wall spalling in mines commonly occurred. Grouting in the rock mass of a collapsed zone is one of the most effective technologies for solving this problem. Through grouting, the rock mass of a collapsed zone can be cemented into continuous and stable blocks, and the physical and mechanical parameters of the rock mass can be significantly improved. In order to investigate the mechanical properties and damage of rock samples after the injection of a high-polymer material, we conducted uniaxial compression tests in a laboratory on grouted specimens. A high-polymer material is commonly used to address the gangue stacking that is caused by large roof collapse and wall spalling accidents in the mining face and the cracking of coal walls. Research has shown that a high-polymer material effectively solidifies gangues. The results indicate a micromechanics effect of the grouted specimens under uniaxial compression. The compressive strength, fracture propagation, damage mode, a... [more]

Keywords: automated top-coal drawing, extra-thick coal seams, optimization analysis, particle element method
A particle element approach based on continuum-discontinuum element method (CDEM) is applied to optimize the automated top-coal drawing techniques in extra-thick coal seams. Numerical models with 100 drawing openings are created according to the field engineering geological conditions of Tongxin coal mine in China. An automated coal drawing control approach in numerical modelling based on time criterion is proposed. The rock mixed rate, top-coal recovery rate and the variance of the drawn top coal amount are counted and set as the statistical indicators to evaluate the top-coal drawing techniques. The traditional top-coal drawing criterion, “rocks appear, close the opening”, leads to low recovery of top coal and waste of coal resources in extra-thick coal seams, significantly weakening the transport stability and efficiency of the scraper conveyer. A three-round unequal time top-coal drawing technique is proposed for automated top-coal drawing. Three drawing openings, corresponding to... [more]

In the present study, a rotational piezoelectric (PZT) energy harvester has been designed, fabricated and tested. The design can enhance output power by frequency up-conversion and provide the desired output power range from a fixed input rotational speed by increasing the interchangeable planet cover numbers which is the novelty of this work. The prototype ability to harvest energy has been evaluated with four experiments, which determine the effect of rotational speed, interchangeable planet cover numbers, the distance between PZTs, and PZTs numbers. Increasing rotational speed shows that it can increase output power. However, increasing planet cover numbers can increase the output power without the need to increase speed or any excitation element. With the usage of one, two, and four planet cover numbers, the prototype is able to harvest output power of 0.414 mW, 0.672 mW, and 1.566 mW, respectively, at 50 kΩ with 1500 rpm, and 6.25 Hz bending frequency of the PZT. Moreover, when th... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: modal energy, POD, spatiotemporal characterization, supersonic inlet buzz
The buzz phenomenon of a typical supersonic inlet is analyzed using the unsteady Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method. The dominant flow patterns and characteristics of the buzzed flow are obtained by decoupling the computed pressure field into spatial and temporal sub-parts based on the POD method. The supersonic inlet buzz phenomenon could be approximated as a product of decoupled temporal and spatial terms, and the one-dimensional (1D) mathematical model is therefore proposed. The standard deviations of the unsteady pressure fields from both the numerical simulation and the model prediction are compared. The limited discrepancy can be observed, and the good agreement validates the credibility of the proposed 1D model. The numerical simulation and the 1D model prediction are presented to explore the unsteady-jet control with a small perturbation. The results of the 1D model and the numerical simulation achieve good agreemen... [more]

In the proposed paper, non-equilibrium and equilibrium models of heat and moisture transfer through wet building materials are presented and compared. In the former, the mass transfer between liquid and gaseous moisture results from the difference between the partial pressure of water vapor and its saturation value. In the second model, the equilibrium between both phases is assumed. In the non-equilibrium model, liquid moisture can be in the continuous (funicular) or discontinuous (pendular) form. The transfer of moisture for each proposed model is tightly coupled with the energy transfer, which is assumed to be an equilibrium process. The time step and grid size sensitivity analysis of both numerical models are performed primarily. The verification of the model is based also on the numerical data available in literature. Finally, obtained with considered models, temporal variations of moisture content in three locations in the computational domain are compared. Reasonable conformity... [more]

During strip backfilling mining in coal mines, the backfilling material is the main support structure. Therefore, studying the pressure law of the backfilling material is essential for the safe and efficient mining of coal resources. Based on research into strip backfilling mining at working face number 3216 of the Shanghe Coal Mine, and to smooth transition of overlying strata loads to the backfilling material, this study proposes a three-stage strip backfilling mining method. Based on thin-plate theory, an elastic thin-plate model, a reasonable spacing of strip mining is constructed, and the reasonable mining parameters of “mining 7 m to retain 8 m” at working face number 3216 of the Shanghe Coal Mine are determined. The law of backfilling pressure in three-stage strip backfilling mining is studied through numerical simulation and physical simulation experiments. The results show that field measurement results are basically consistent with the experimental results and numerical simul... [more]

Keywords: fins, numerical modeling, phase change materials, solidification, thermal energy storage
In the present study, a triplex-tube, employing fin-enhanced phase change materials (PCMs), as a thermal energy storage (TES) system was studied numerically. The main flaw of the PCMs is their low thermal conductivity that restricts their effectiveness for energy storage applications. Metallic (copper) fins are added to the geometry of the system to improve their function by extending the heat transfer area. The effects of the presence, configuration, and dimensions of copper fins were investigated to understand the best design for minimizing the solidification time and achieving the best performance enhancement for the TES system selected for this study. The results revealed that the best performance belonged to fins with a mix configuration, with an attachment angle of 90° and the length and width of 28 mm and 1 mm, respectively. Using this configuration could reduce the required time for complete solidification by around 42% compared to the system without fins. Moreover, it was conc... [more]

Gibbs free energies, based on DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations, prove that enaminone (2-(anilinemethylidene)cyclohexane-1,3-dione) and ketamine (2-[(phenylimino)-methyl]cyclohexane-1,3-dione) are the most and least stable tautomeric forms of the studied systems, respectively. 1H and 13C NMR spectra prove that 2-(anilinemethylidene)cyclohexane-1,3-diones are the only tautomeric species present in dimethylsulfoxide solution (a very weak signal can be seen only for the p-methoxy derivatives). The zwitterionic character of these enaminones is strengthened by naphthoannulation and by the insertion of the electron-withdrawing substituent into the benzene ring (the latter weakens the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the compound). Substituent and naphtoannulation have no effect on the stability of the studied tautomers. Slight twisting of the benzene ring, with respect to the CArNC plane (seen in the crystalline state), was proven to also take place in vacuum and in solution.

Keywords: CCS, clean coal technologies, geological CO2 storage, site characterization
The paper presents an analysis of the possible location of geological formations suitable for CO2 storage in the Upper Silesia Coal Basin, Poland. The range of the reservoir has been determined on the basis of an analysis of basic geological parameters, which determine the selection criteria for sites suitable for CO2 storage. A dynamic modelling of the CO2 distribution in the aquifer is presented. Based on the constructed model of migration, reactivity, and geochemical transport of CO2 in geological structures, it is possible to identify potential migration routes and escape sites of CO2 on the surface. The analysis of the technical and geological possibilities of CO2 storage was carried out according to the regulations of the complex Polish geological law, specifically in terms of sequestration possibilities in geological formations.

Keywords: HVAC fan-coil, metal foams, pressure drops
In this paper, a series of experimental data about the role of the metal foam thickness on the total air flow pressure drop is presented. The tested metallic foams are based on aluminum and nickel-chromium and they are characterized by a considerable value of porosity (>0.92) and by a number of pores per linear inches (PPI) close to 10. The measures were conducted in a range of air velocity values typical for HVAC fan-coils. Under these conditions, the flow regime into the pores is highly turbulent. It was demonstrated that below a threshold value of the ratio between the thickness of the porous medium (H) and the characteristic dimension of the pores (d), the dispersion of the pressure drop values from a sample to another one can be very high. This behavior can limit the industrial use of these materials. In addition, the results presented in this paper confirm that the pressure drop data obtained under highly turbulent conditions can be conveniently used in order to determine the ine... [more]

Bio-hydrogenated diesel (BHD), derived from vegetable oil via hydrotreating technology, is a promising alternative transportation fuel to replace nonsustainable petroleum diesel. In this work, a novel Pt-based catalyst supported on N-doped activated carbon prepared from polypyrrole as the nitrogen source (Pt/N-AC) was developed and applied in the palm oil deoxygenation process to produce BHD in a fixed bed reactor system. High conversion rates of triglycerides (conversion of TG > 90%) and high deoxygenation percentage (DeCOx% = 76% and HDO% = 7%) were obtained for the palm oil deoxygenation over Pt/N-AC catalyst at optimised reaction conditions: T = 300 °C, 30 bar of H2, and LHSV = 1.5 h−1. In addition to the excellent performance, the Pt/N-AC catalyst is highly stable in the deoxygenation reaction, as confirmed by the XRD and TEM analyses of the spent sample. The incorporation of N atoms in the carbon structure alters the electronic density of the catalyst, favouring the interaction w... [more]

Keywords: aerobic, dry matter loss, gas emission, moisture content, non-aerobic, storage, wood chips
Biomass materials have been increasingly used due to their renewable nature. The problems occurring during the storage of fresh woody materials include gas emissions and dry matter losses as a result of degradation. The objective of this study was to investigate and quantify the effect of moisture content on gas emissions from stored wood chips. Experiments were conducted under non-aerobic and aerobic conditions using fresh Western Red Cedar (WRC) chips with different initial moisture contents over a range of temperatures. The peak CO2 emission factor of 2.9 g/kg dry matter (DM) was observed from high moisture chips at 20 °C under non-aerobic conditions after two-month storage, which was an order of magnitude greater than that from low moisture chips. In the case of volatile organic compounds, a range of compounds were detected from all tests. The concentration of VOCs was found to be positively correlated with moisture content. Gas emissions from the aerobic reactors exhibited similar... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: environmental sustainability, ground-source heat pumps, life cycle assessment (LCA), phase-change material (PCM), space conditioning
Space conditioning is responsible for the majority of carbon dioxide emission and fossil fuel consumption during a building’s life cycle. The exploitation of renewable energy sources, together with efficiency enhancement, is the most promising solution. An innovative layout for ground-source heat pumps, featuring upstream thermal energy storage (uTES), was already proposed and proved to be as effective as conventional systems while requiring lower impact geothermal installations thanks to its ability to decouple ground and heat-pump energy fluxes. This work presents further improvements to the layout, obtained using more compact and efficient thermal energy storage containing phase-change materials (PCMs). The switch from sensible- to latent-heat storage has the twofold benefit of dramatically reducing the volume of storage (by a factor of approximately 10) and increasing the coefficient of performance of the heat pump. During the daily cycle, the PCMs are continuously melted/solidifie... [more]
