Ilaria Matacena, Laura Lancellotti, Nicola Lisi, Paola Delli Veneri, Pierluigi Guerriero, Santolo Daliento
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: capacitance–voltage measurements, graphene, impedance spectroscopy, Nyquist plot, solar cell
In this work, front contacts for graphene-based solar cells are made by means of colloidal graphite instead of gold. The performance is characterized by exploiting impedance spectroscopy and is compared to the standard gold contact technology. Impedance data are analysed through equivalent circuit representation in terms of lumped parameters, suitable to describe the complex impedance in the frequency range considered in the experiments. Using this approach, capacitance−voltage of the considered graphene−silicon solar cell is found and the barrier height forming at the graphene−silicon interface is extracted.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: backsheets, encapsulants, material analysis, photovoltaics, spectroscopy
With the increased development of portable and handheld molecular spectrometers within recent years, new fields of applications have opened up, such as their use (i) for material identification of samples contained in large and non-portable components and (ii) the detection of material degradation effects and failures directly in the plant. The usability and transferability of well-established analytical characterization techniques, such as attenuated total reflection (ATR) Infrared (IR)-, Raman, and Near-Infrared (NIR)-spectroscopy as mobile devices for the in-field characterization of Photovoltaic (PV) modules, are described and discussed. Material identification of the polymeric compounds incorporated in the PV modules (encapsulants, backsheets) is often an important task, especially when degradation and failures occur. Whereas the knowledge of the bill of materials is one challenge, the detection of material degradation effects is another important issue. Both tasks can be solved n... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Cup plant, Giant miscanthus, mechanical durability, moisture content, perennial biomass, pressure compaction, solid density, Virginia mallow
In Poland the use of solid biomass obtained from intentional plantations of energy plants is increasing. This biomass is most often processed into solid fuels. There are growing indications that renewable energy sources, in particular biomass production, will continue to develop, so the better we know the raw material, the more effectively we will be able to use it. The results of tests that determine the impact of compaction pressure on selected quality parameters of pellets made from selected biomass types are presented. Material from plants such as Giant miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus Greef et Deu), Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.), Virginia mallow (Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby) was studied. The compaction process was carried out using the SIRIO P400 hydraulic press with a closed chamber with a diameter of 12 mm. Samples were made in four pressures: 131; 196; 262; 327 MPa and three moisture levels: 8%, 11%, 14%. It was found that with increasing compaction pressure and moist... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: accumulation behavior, breakdown characteristics, DC voltage, natural ester, particles
The converter transformer is a key equipment in high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system. Its oil-paper insulation system in the valve winding and outlet bushing experiences AC, DC, AC/DC, and transient impulse voltages simultaneously. The oil contamination problem is more serious under DC electric field. Therefore, it is significant to investigate the characteristic of particles motion and accumulation under DC electric field. In this paper, first, the movement and accumulation behavior of fiber particles and copper particles in mineral oil and natural ester were recorded and simulated. Then, the influence of fiber and copper particles on the oil conductivity was analyzed. Finally, the DC breakdown strength of mineral oil and natural ester with different particles concentration was compared. Results show that the movement speed of copper particles was larger than that of fiber particles. Fiber impurities were easy to form bridges in mineral oil, while there was no impuri... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biomass, compaction, drying, mechanical durability, pellets, Scots pine, specific density
For biomass compaction, it is important to determine all aspects of the process that will affect the quality of pellets and briquettes. The low bulk density of biomass leads to many problems in transportation and storage, necessitating the use of a compaction process to ensure a solid density of at least 1000 kg·m−3 and bulk density of at least 600 kg·m−3. These parameters should be achieved at a relatively low compaction pressure that can be achieved through the proper preparation of the raw material. As the compaction process includes a drying stage, the aim of this work is to determine the influence of the drying temperature of pine biomass in the range of 60−140 °C on the compaction process. To determine whether this effect is compensated by the moisture, compaction was carried out on the material in a dry state and on the materials with moisture contents of 5% and 10% and for compacting pressures in the 130.8−457.8 MPa range. It was shown that drying temperature affects the specif... [more]
Study on the Tri-axial Time-Dependent Deformation and Constitutive Model of Glauberite Salt Rock under the Coupled Effects of Compression and Dissolution

Subject: Materials
Keywords: damage constitutive model, dissolution effect, glauberite salt rock, rock mechanics, time-dependent deformation
Solution mining for glauberite salt rock is a long-term process that takes several years to several decades. Therefore, deposit deformations and subsidence of ground surfaces are time-dependent deformation problems that should consider the effect of water dissolution. In order to investigate the time-dependent deformation characteristics of glauberite salt rock, tri-axial time-dependent deformation tests were conducted under the condition of 4 MPa confining pressure and 5 MPa axial pressure with infiltration pressures of 3, 2, 1, and 0 MPa, respectively, and the micro-CT scan system was used to scan the glauberite specimens before and after the experiment in order to study the fracture evolution inside the specimen, and a damage constitutive model was established to fit the time-dependent deformation curves based on the damage mechanics and effective stress principle. To simulate the solution mining process, the time-dependent deformation process of glauberite salt rock was divided int... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: exergy transfer performance, graphene nanoparticles, heat exchanger, heat pump, marine seawater source, nanofluids
A marine seawater source heat pump is based on the relatively stable temperature of seawater, and uses it as the system’s cold and heat source to provide the ship with the necessary cold and heat energy. This technology is one of the important solutions to reduce ship energy consumption. Therefore, in this paper, the heat exchanger in the CO2 heat pump system with graphene nano-fluid refrigerant is experimentally studied, and the influence of related factors on its heat transfer enhancement performance is analyzed. First, the paper describes the transformation of the heat pump system experimental bench, the preparation of six different mass concentrations (0~1 wt.%) of graphene nanofluid and its thermophysical properties. Secondly, this paper defines graphene nanofluids as beneficiary fluids, the heat exchanger gains cold fluid heat exergy increase, and the consumption of hot fluid heat is heat exergy decrease. Based on the heat transfer efficiency and exergy efficiency of the heat exc... [more]
Space Charge Accumulation at Material Interfaces in HVDC Cable Insulation Part II—Simulations of Charge Transport

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bipolar charge transport, charge injection, charge packets, detrapping, electrical conduction, hopping, roughness enhanced charge injection, surface roughness, trapping
Extruded high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable systems contain interfaces with poorly understood microscopic properties, particularly surface roughness. Modelling the effect of roughness on conduction in cable insulation is challenging, as the available results of macroscopic measurements give little information about microscopic charge distributions at material interfaces. In this work, macroscopic charge injection from interfaces is assessed by using a bipolar charge transport model, which is validated against a series of space charge measurements on cable peelings with different degrees of surface roughness. The electric field-dependent conduction and charge trapping effects stimulated by the injection current originating from rough surfaces are assessed. It is shown that by accounting for roughness enhanced charge injection with the parameters derived in part I of the paper, reasonable agreement between computed and measured results can be achieved at medium field strengths (10−... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anthraquinone, aqueous battery, manganese battery, metal-organic material, titanium anode
The need for expanded energy storage motivates material development for scalable aqueous secondary batteries. The combination of transition metals with redox-active organics represents a new approach to functional material design. Here, we detail the synthesis of titanium(IV) 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (Ti(1,8-DHAQ)2) as a novel redox-active material and demonstrate its use as a negative electrode in an aqueous battery. This one-pot synthesis results in amorphous micron-scale particles with titanium binding directly to the carbonyl feature as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. When assembled in a coin cell with a lithium manganese oxide positive electrode, the active material can be electrochemically cycled with a charge density of 40 mAh/g at 1.1 V. This represents a new method of creating simple and scalable electrodes using metal-organic materials for versatile energy storage applications.

Keywords: biomass quality, olive groves, pruning harvesting, slope, work productivity
Pruning residues from olive groves represent an important biomass source. Until now, the management of pruning residue has generally represented a disposal problem rather than an opportunity for additional revenue. The main problem is the lack of a well-organized pruning biomass supply chain. In particular, harvesting is a key stage that influences the product quality, the type of logistics chain, and the economic sustainability of the pruning supply chain. The aim of the present paper was the evaluation of the machine performance of the Facma Comby TR200 towed shredder. The harvesting tests took place in Agios Konstantinos, Fthiotida, Central Greece. Two different experimental fields were used for the evaluation of this harvesting system; these fields were characterized by different slopes to check the convenience of using such a towed shredder on both hilly slopes and flat terrains. Analysis was conducted focusing on both the work productivity and costs. Moreover, an evaluation of th... [more]

AC pre-discharge currents, breakdown, and flashover voltage measurements are reported in a 10 mm needle-plane arrangement in a 4% NovecTM 4710/96% CO2 gas mixture and compared with CO2 for pressures up to 8.8 bar abs. Flashover measurements were performed on different solid dielectrics (Al2O3_filled epoxy resins, PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) and PE (polyethylene)) for different roughness surface finishes. The effect of fixed conducting needles at various positions on electrical strength is reported. A strong nonlinear behaviour as function of gas pressure was observed for all the studied parameters (gas, needle position, solid insulator, insulator roughness). The non-linear behaviour is attributed to the inception and quenching of glow corona, in the interval between inception and breakdown or flashover voltages. It is found that a 4% concentration of NovecTM 4710 in CO2 has a breakdown/flashover voltage ≈ 1.14 higher than CO2. The glow corona-induced stabilization effect is seen for... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: co-combustion, grate boiler, heavy metals, phosphorus recovery, sewage sludge
Phosphorus has been identified as a critical element by the European Union and recycling efforts are increasingly common. An important phosphorus-containing waste stream for recycling is municipal sewage sludge (MSS), which is used directly as fertilizer to farmland. However, it contains pollutants such as heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, polychlorinated bi-phenyls (PCBs) and nano-plastics. The interest in combustion of MSS is continuously growing, as it both reduces the volume as well as destroys the organic materials and could separate certain heavy metals from the produced ashes. This results in ashes with a potential for either direct use as fertilizer or as a suitable feedstock for upgrading processes. The aim of this study was to investigate co-combustion of MSS and biomass to create a phosphorus-rich bottom ash with a low heavy metal content. A laboratory-scale fixed-bed reactor in addition to an 8 MWth grate-boiler was used for the experimental work. The concentration of... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: deep energy renovation, hygrothermal performance of buildings, moisture safety, nZEB renovation, prefabricated timber frame insulation elements, quality assessment
A need for the refurbishment and renewal of the existing building stock has been in focus for many decades, principally because of excessive global energy consumption and pollution. This paper presents a methodology and the results of analysis of choices of realizable sets of timber frame prefabricated insulation elements for major renovation of apartment buildings. Numerous combinations of elements with different characteristics were analyzed by applying measurements, interviews, and building performance simulation software, and thereupon their performance, installation eligibility, and concurrent cost levels were compared. Mineral wool board with a special wind barrier facing was found to be the best material as a wind barrier from the perspective of hygrothermal performance. An air and vapor barrier should have sufficient vapor permeability to allow dry-out of constructional moisture. It is possible to renovate apartment buildings to meet the nZEB energy performance requirements and... [more]

Keywords: acid hydrolysis, acid-catalyzed wet torrefaction, barley straw, combined severity factor, energy yield, enhancement factor, higher heating value, response surface methodology
In the present study, the possibility of improving the higher heating value (HHV) of lignocellulosic biomass, especially barley straw, was examined. The research deals with the treatment of barley straw by acid-catalyzed wet torrefaction (ACWT), also called acid hydrolysis, in a batch reactor (autoclave) Parr 4553 3.75 L. In this case, two different simulation approaches were applied: (i) combined severity factor (CSF) and (ii) response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box−Behnken design of experiments (DoE). Sulfuric acid (SA) concentration, temperature and time were the ACWT parameters examined herein. An oxygen bomb calorimeter was used for the HHV measurement. The findings indicated that the composition changes of the straw due to ACWT had a significant effect on the HHV of the pretreated material. In this study, treatment conditions were 10−35 mM SA, 160−200 °C and an isothermal reaction time 0−40 min (preheating period not included in these values). In conclusion, there was a s... [more]

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells and direct alcohol fuel cells have been extensively studied over the last three decades or so. They have emerged as potential systems to power portable applications, providing clean energy, and offering good commercial viability. Ethanol is considered one of the most interesting fuels in this field. Herein, platinum-rare earth (Pt-RE) binary alloys (RE = Ce, Sm, Ho, Dy, nominal composition 50 at.% Pt) were produced and studied as anodes for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline medium. A Pt-Dy alloy with nominal composition 40 at.% Pt was also tested. Their electrocatalytic performance was evaluated by voltammetric and chronoamperometric measurements in 2 M NaOH solution with different ethanol concentrations (0.2−0.8 M) in the 25−45 °C temperature range. Several EOR kinetic parameters were determined for the Pt-RE alloys, namely the charge transfer and diffusion coefficients, and the number of exchanged electrons. Charge transfer coefficients... Subject: Materials
Keywords: defects, metal halide perovskite, photoconductivity, thermally stimulated currents
We studied electrically active defects in CsPbBr3 polycrystalline films and single crystals samples using the thermally stimulated currents (TSC) technique in the temperature range 100−400 K. Below room temperature, both polycrystalline and single-crystals TSC emission is composed by a quasi-continuum of energy levels in the range 0.1−0.3 eV, and capture cross sections ~10−21 cm2. Above room temperature, TSC analysis reveals the presence of defect states in the range 0.40−0.52 eV only in polycrystalline samples, whereas these intermediate energy states are absent in TSC detected in single crystals. In polycrystalline films, the occupancy changes of an energy level at 0.45 eV strongly influences the room temperature photoconductivity, giving rise to slow transients due to defect passivation. In single-crystals, where intermediate energy states are absent, the photoconductivity response during illumination is almost stable and characterized by fast rise/decay times, a promising result fo... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: burial depth, clastic sandstone, elastoplastic damage, elastoplastic damage coupling model
Clastic sandstone is widely distributed in oil and gas reservoirs; its internal structure has many micro-defects. Under different stress environments of burial depth, significant damage evolution and plastic deformation easily occur. A series of triaxial compression tests were performed to study the coupled elastoplastic damage mechanical behavior of clastic sandstone samples at different burial depths ranging from 581.28 m to 979.82 m. Results reveal that the stress-strain responses of clastic sandstone samples exhibit significant nonlinear and softening characteristics. The mechanical behavior is due to the coupling of plastic deformation and mechanical damage. Plastic and damage internal variables cause damage stiffness degradation and plastic flow. Considering the coupling of elastoplastic damage in the loading process, an elastoplastic damage coupling model is proposed to study the mechanical behavior of different burial depth clastic sandstones. The model can effectively describe... [more]
Single-Cell Tests to Explore the Reliability of Sofc Installations Operating Offshore

Subject: Materials
Keywords: concentration polarization, contamination, oxygen starvation, reliability, salt, SOFC
This paper studies the robustness of off-shore solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) installations and the nature and causes of possible cell degradation in marine environments. Two important, cathode-related, impediments to ensuring SOFC reliability in off-shore installations are: cathode degradation due to salt contamination and oxygen depletion in the air supply. Short-term and long-term tests show the effect of salt contamination in the cathode feed on cell performance, and reveal the underlying cause of the degradation seen. SEM/X-ray Diffraction/(XRD) analyses made it possible to identify salt taken up in the cathode microstructure after the short-term testing while the macroscopic cell structure remained intact after the short-term tests. The long-term degradation was found to be more severe, and SEM images showed delamination at the cathode/electrolyte interface with salt present, something that was not seen after long-term testing without salt. The effect of oxygen depletion on the per... [more]
Recipe of Lightweight Slurry with High Early Strength of the Resultant Cement Sheath
Marcin Kremieniewski
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cement sheath, cement slurry, compressive strength, microspheres, well cementing
Admixtures of mineral or waste filling materials are used to reduce slurry density. However, the sheath made of lightweight cement slurry has low mechanical performance at the initial bonding time. The required strength is achieved later. This is the main problem when evaluating the cement bond logging. The waiting time for geophysical measurements after injecting and bonding of cement is nowadays increasingly shortened. This is forced by economic factors. Too early geophysical measurements may result in obtaining a false indication of the cement bond logging. The lack of cement or partial bonding, despite the presence of slurry in the annular space is then found. The slurry developed by the author achieves high compressive strength after a short bonding time. Reducing the amount of water in the slurry resulted in a lowered filtration value. This is important in preventing gas migration after the cementing. The designed slurry also reaches the value of 3.5 MPa in a short time. This all... [more]

Keywords: breakup regime, nanofluids, spray characteristics, subsonic crossflow
Nanofluids are attracting attention as future energy carriers owing to their high performance for improving combustion and heat transfer. In this study, the macroscopic characteristics of nanofluid jets in a subsonic gaseous crossflow were investigated by focusing on the influence of nanoparticle additives on the breakup process. Based on a distribution map of the image grayscale standard deviation, we propose an improved method to process transverse injection shadowgraphs. A simplified model of the transition mechanism from column breakup to surface breakup at a small Weber number was established. The effects of nanoparticles on the jet trajectory and column fracture position were analyzed according to the deviations from the pure liquid. To interpret the effects of the nanoparticles, a new nondimensional parameter was introduced into the empirical correlation of the column fracture position. The results indicated that at low concentrations of nanoparticles, the surface tension of the... [more]
Microscopic Pore Structure of Surrounding Rock for Underground Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) Caverns in Bedded Rock Salt

Subject: Materials
Keywords: bedded rock salt, gas adsorption, pore characteristic, salt cavern, strategic petroleum reserve (SPR)
Using salt caverns for an underground strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) is considered as an ideal approach due to the excellent characteristics of low porosity, low permeability, self-healing of damage, and strong plastic deformation ability of rock salt. Salt deposits in China are mostly layered rock salt structures, with the characteristics of many interlayers, bringing great challenges for the construction of SPR facilities. Studying the microscopic pore characteristics of the rock surrounding SPR salt caverns in different environments (with brine and crude oil erosion) is necessary because the essence of mechanical and permeability characteristics is the macroscopic embodiment of the microscopic pore structure. In this paper, XRD tests and SEM tests are carried out to determine the physical properties of storage media and surrounding rock. Gas adsorption tests and mercury intrusion tests are carried out to analyze the microscopic pore structure, specific surface area variation and... [more]

Keywords: C12A7, DFT, drone, encapsulation, endoergic, hazard
Porous materials have generated a great deal of interest for use in energy storage technologies, as their architectures have high surface areas due to their porous nature. They are promising candidates for use in many fields such as gas storage, metal storage, gas separation, sensing and magnetism. Novel porous materials which are non-toxic, cheap and have high storage capacities are actively considered for the storage of Li ions in Li-ion batteries. In this study, we employed density functional theory simulations to examine the encapsulation of lithium in both stoichiometric and electride forms of C12A7. This study shows that in both forms of C12A7, Li atoms are thermodynamically stable when compared with isolated gas-phase atoms. Lithium encapsulation through the stoichiometric form (C12A7:O2−) turns its insulating nature metallic and introduces Li+ ions in the lattice. The resulting compound may be of interest as an electrode material for use in Li-ion batteries, as it possesses a m... [more]

Keywords: adiabatic expansion, molecular degree of freedom, T–s diagram, working fluid classification
The shape of the temperature vs. specific entropy diagram of a working fluid is very important to understanding the behavior of fluid during the expansion phase of the organic Rankine cycle or similar processes. Traditional wet-dry-isentropic classifications of these materials are not sufficient; several materials remain unclassified or misclassified, while materials listed in the same class might show crucial differences. A novel classification, based on the characteristic points of the T−s diagrams was introduced recently, listing eight different classes. In this paper, we present a map of these classes for a model material, namely, the van der Waals fluid in reduced temperature (i.e., reduced molecular degree of freedom) space; the latter quantity is related to the molar isochoric specific heat. Although van der Waals fluid cannot be used to predict material properties quantitatively, the model gives a very good and proper qualitative description. Using this map, some peculiarities... [more]

Keywords: anomalous discharge current, charging, discharging, low-density polyethylene, nanocomposite, space-charge-limited current, trap depth, trap site separation
Charging and discharge currents measured in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and LDPE/Al2O3 nanocomposite are analyzed. The experiments were conducted at temperatures of 40−80 °C utilizing a consecutive charging−discharging procedure, with the charging step at electric fields varying between 20 and 60 kV/mm. A quasi-steady state of the charging currents was earlier observed for the nanofilled specimens and it was attributed to the enhanced trapping process at polymer−nanofiller interfaces. An anomalous behavior of the discharge currents was found at elevated temperatures for both the studied materials and its occurrence at lower temperatures in the nanofilled LDPE was due to the presence of deeply trapped charges at polymer−nanofiller interfaces. The field dependence of the quasi-steady charging currents is examined by testing for different conduction mechanisms. It is shown that the space-charge-limited process is dominant and the average trap site separation is estimated at less than... [more]

Dilithium manganese oxide (LMO) thin film was newly fabricated as an active material on a fluorinated-tin-oxide pre-coated glass electrode by a wet process. A stable LMO precursor solution was developed through the reaction of lithium and manganese acetates with butylamine in ethanol. A spin-coated precursor film was heat-treated at 500 °C in air for 0.5 h. The X-ray diffraction pattern indicates that the resultant film consists of layer-structured LMO crystals. The X-ray photoelectron spectra of LMO thin film suggests that the ratio of Mn3+/Mn4+ is 1/4, and the chemical formula can be expressed as Li2MnO2.9. A device was assembled with O-deficient LMO and TiO2 thin films as each active material, along with an electrolytic solution involving LiPF6. The charging voltages (2.67 and 1.45 V) of this device were recorded by applying a constant current of 0.2 mA and using 1-sun irradiation with no external power supply, respectively. The voltages delivered by this cobalt-free device were 0.6... [more]
