Experimental Realization of Heavily p-doped Half-Heusler CoVSn Compound
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CoVSn, half-Heusler, heterogeneous structure, thermoelectric
Hypothetical half-Heusler (HH) ternary alloy of CoVSn has already been computationally investigated for possible spintronics and thermoelectric applications. We report the experimental realization of this compound and the characterizations of its thermoelectric properties. The material was synthesized by a solid-state reaction of the stoichiometric amounts of the elements via powder metallurgy (30 h mechanical milling and annealing at 900 °C for 20 h) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The temperature-dependent ternary thermodynamic phase diagram of Co-V-Sn was further calculated. The phase diagram and detailed analysis of the synthesized material revealed the formation of the non-stoichiometry HH CoVSn, mixed with the binary intermetallic phases of SnV3, Co2Sn, and Co3V. The combination of X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and thermoelectric transport properties confirmed the formation of a multi-phase compound. The analysis revealed the predicted thermoelectric... [more]

Electrical Characterization of a New Crosslinked Copolymer Blend for DC Cable Insulation
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cable insulation, copolymer, crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE), DC conductivity, dielectric response, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), surface potential decay, trap energy
To design reliable high voltage cables, clean materials with superior insulating properties capable of operating at high electric field levels at elevated temperatures are required. This study aims at the electrical characterization of a byproduct-free crosslinked copolymer blend, which is seen as a promising alternative to conventional peroxide crosslinked polyethylene currently used for high voltage direct current cable insulation. The characterization entails direct current (DC) conductivity, dielectric response and surface potential decay measurements at different temperatures and electric field levels. In order to quantify the insulating performance of the new material, the electrical properties of the copolymer blend are compared with those of two reference materials; i.e., low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and peroxide crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE). It is found that, for electric fields of 10−50 kV/mm and temperatures varying from 30 °C to 70 °C, the DC conductivity of the copol... [more]

Building Thermo-Modernisation Solution Based on the Multi-Objective Optimisation Method
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: global cost methodology, multi-objective optimisation, primary energy, thermo-modernisation
This study presents a multi-objective optimisation of building thermo-modernisation for multi-family buildings. The applied model has considered alternative solutions for insulation materials, with different thicknesses and different types of windows. The weighted sum method was applied to find a solution considering the minimisation of global cost, primary energy ratio and CO2 emissions. The solutions were compared for a building equipped with natural ventilation, and with mechanical supply—exhaust ventilation. In reference to the two considered types of ventilation, we analysed how the modification of an insulation thickness, its type and the type of installed windows, can be converted into individual evaluation criteria. The weights of the considered criteria were changed; however, this had no influence on the optimal solution. If the aim is to achieve the standards of zero-energy buildings, natural ventilation cannot be applied, despite the high value of thermal insulation of the b... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cooling applications, experimental testing, phase change material, residential buildings, state of charge, thermal energy storage
Monitoring of the state of charge of the thermal energy storage component in solar thermal systems for space heating and/or cooling in residential buildings is a key element from the overall system control strategy point of view. According to the literature, there is not a unique method for determining the state of charge of a thermal energy storage system that could generally be applied in any system. This contribution firstly provides a classification of the state-of-the-art of available techniques for the determination of the state of charge, and secondly, it presents an experimental analysis of different methods based on established sensor technologies, namely temperature, mass flow rates, and pressure measurements, tested using a lab-scale heat exchanger filled with a commercial phase change material for cooling applications. March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dielectric barrier discharge, flow control, plasma actuators, separation control
A dielectric barrier discharge actuator (DBD) is considered and studied as a stall recovery device. The DBD is installed on the nose of a NACA0015 airfoil with chord × span 300 × 930 mm. The geometry of the exposed electrode has periodic triangular tips purposely designed for the case under study. Wind tunnel tests have been carried out over a range of airspeeds up to 35 m/s with a Reynolds number of 700 k. The flow morphology has been characterized by means of the particle image velocimetry technique, obtaining velocity fields and pressure coefficients. By exploring different planes along the model span, the three-dimensional effect of the DBD has been reconstructed, identifying the flow region mainly sensitive to the plasma actuation. Finally, the actuator effectiveness has been quantified accounting for the power consumption data, leading to defining further design improvements in view of a better efficiency.

Impurity Effects on the Mechanical Properties and Permeability Characteristics of Salt Rock
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: computed tomography, impurity effects, permeability characteristics, salt rock
Impure salt rock strata are extensively distributed in China, giving them great significance in the study of the physical properties of impure salt rock for the construction of underground gas storage in salt mines. To investigate the confining pressure and impurity effects on the mechanical properties and gas permeability characteristics of salt rock, permeability tests under hydrostatic confining pressure and conventional triaxial compression (CTC), on salt rock samples with different impurity contents, were carried out. The results demonstrate that the confining pressure effects cause an increase in triaxial compression strength, but a decrease in permeability. However, impurity enhances the bearing capacity and permeability of the salt rock; both rock strength and permeability increase with an increase in impurity content. Moreover, the broken salt rock specimens were analyzed after the CTC test using Computed Tomography (CT) equipment. To understand the relationships between pore... [more]

Mechanism and Prevention of Rockburst in Steeply Inclined and Extremely Thick Coal Seams for Fully Mechanized Top-Coal Caving Mining and Under Gob Filling Conditions
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: destress blasting, elastic deformation energy, mechanical model, rockburst, roof breakage, steeply inclined and extremely thick coal seam
The steeply inclined and extremely thick coal seams (SIETCS) under the condition of gob filling frequently suffer from the occurrence of rockbursts. Figuring out the mechanisms of rockbursts under this condition for taking targeted measures to mitigate rockburst hazards in SIETCS is of great significance. Using the typical SIETCS with an average dip angle of 87° at Wudong Coal Mine (WCM) as a case study, a mechanical model and elastic deformation energy (EDE) function of a “steeply inclined suspended roof structure” was developed, and the influence factors were analyzed by theoretical analysis. Simultaneously, the rockburst risk assessment was carried out based on the theory of a rockburst start-up. The pressure relief measures are optimized by comparing the pressure relief effects of three kinds of destress blasting schemes. The results indicate that the damage characteristics of rockburst are mainly floor heave, the sidewall’s inward deformation and roof subsidence. The damage degree... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: convective heat transfer, electronics cooling, heat sink, heat transfer enhancement, laser etching, microstructured surface
The efficient dissipation of localized heat flux by convection is a key request in several engineering applications, especially electronic ones. The recent advancements in manufacturing processes are unlocking the design and industrialization of heat exchangers with unprecedented geometric characteristics and, thus, performance. In this work, laser etching manufacturing technique is employed to develop metal surfaces with designed microstructured surface patterns. Such precise control of the solid-air interface (artificial roughness) allows to manufacture metal heat sinks with enhanced thermal transmittance with respect to traditional flat surfaces. Here, the thermal performance of these laser-etched devices is experimentally assessed by means of a wind tunnel in a fully turbulent regime. Fractal Characteristics of Micro- and Mesopores in the Longmaxi Shale
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO2 and N2 adsorption, fractal characteristics, Heterogeneity, longmaxi shale, micropores and mesopores, multifractal
To better understand the variability and heterogeneity of pore size distributions (PSDs) in the Longmaxi Shale, twelve shale samples were collected from the Xiaoxi and Fendong section, Sichuan Province, South China. Multifractal analysis was employed to study PSDs of mesopores (2−50 nm) and micropores (<2 nm) based on low-pressure N2/CO2 adsorption (LP-N2/CO2GA). The results show that the PSDs of mesopores and micropores exhibit a multifractal behavior. The multifractal parameters can be divided into the parameters of heterogeneity (D−10−D10, D0−D10 and D−10−D0) and the parameters of singularity (D1 and H). For both the mesopores and micropores, decreasing the singularity of the pore size distribution contributes to larger heterogeneous parameters. However, micropores and mesopores also vary widely in terms of the pore heterogeneity and its controlling factors. Shale with a higher total organic carbon (TOC) content may have a larger volume of micropores and more heterogeneous mesopo... [more]

The proposed machine topology is intended to facilitate the extraction of PM material towards a recycling process. The selection of a machine for prototyping is carried out by investigating the effect of the variation of the number of rotor teeth and stator modules on various parameters, with models developed in Finite Element (FE). Finally, the models developed of the selected combination were validated with a detailed experimental evaluation of the prototype.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: acidification, micro-nano-computed tomography (CT), mixed siliciclastic–carbonate rocks, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), pore structure, T2 cutoff
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is used widely to characterize petrophysical properties of siliciclastic and carbonate rocks but rarely to study those of mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks. In this study, 13 different core samples and eight acidified core samples selected amongst those 13 from the Paleogene Shahejie Formation in Southern Laizhouwan Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, were tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-nano-computed tomography (CT), and NMR. SEM and CT results revealed a complex pore structure diversity, pore distribution, and pore-throat connectivity in mixed reservoirs. Sixteen groups of NMR experiments addressed changes in these properties and permeabilities of mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks before and after acidification to determine its effects on such reservoirs. NMR experimental results showed no “diffusion coupling” effect in mixed siliciclastic−carbonate rocks. Distributions of NMR T2 cutoff values (T2C) are closely related to the pore structure... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CZTSe, earth-abundant, growth temperature, kesterite structure
Kesterite-structured Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) is considered as one of the Earth-abundant and non-toxic photovoltaic materials. CZTSe films have been prepared using a single-step co-evaporation method at a relatively low temperature (i.e., below 500 °C). Due to the volatile nature of tin-selenide, the control over substrate temperature (i.e., growth temperature) is very important in terms of the deposition of high-quality CZTSe films. In this regard, the effects of growth temperatures on the CZTSe film morphology were investigated. The suitable temperature range to deposit CZTSe films with Cu-poor and Zn-rich compositions was 380−480 °C. As the temperature increased, the surface roughness of the CZTSe film decreased, which could improve p/n junction properties and associated device performances. Particularly, according to capacitance-voltage (C-V) and derived-level capacitance profiling (DLCP) measurements, the density of interfacial defects of CZTSe film grown at 480 °C showed the lowest val... Subject: Materials
Keywords: bio-based material, biodegradability, filamentous fungi, Trametes versicolor, wheat
Waste management systems are overloaded with huge streams of plastic, a large part of this being originated from packaging. Additionally, the production of wheat, one of the most cultivated crops in the world, generates low-value lignocellulosic materials, which are mostly discarded. In this study, the wheat lignocellulosic byproducts straw and bran were used for the co-production of enzymes and bio-based materials with possible application as packaging via the compression molding method. The mechanical properties of the films were studied based on the effects of the removal of lignin by alkali and biological pretreatment, the growth of filamentous fungi, the size of the particles, and the enzyme recovery. Generally, the straw films were stiffer than the bran ones, but the highest Young’s modulus was obtained for the biologically pretreated bran (1074 MPa). The addition of a step to recover the fungal cellulases produced during the cultivation had no statistical effect on the mechanica... [more]

High Temperature Pyrolysis of Municipal Plastic Waste Using Me/Ni/ZSM-5 Catalysts: The Effect of Metal/Nickel Ratio
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: gas-chromatography, metal loaded catalysts, pyrolysis, Syngas, waste plastic
This work is dedicated to the high temperature pyrolysis of municipal plastic waste using Me/Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts. Catalysts were synthetized by wet impregnation. In addition to nickel, synthetic zeolite catalysts contain calcium, ceria, lanthanum, magnesia or manganese. Catalysts were prepared and tested using 0.1, 0.5 and 2.0 Me/Ni ratios. Catalyst morphology was investigated by SEM and surface analysis. Higher concentrations of second metals can block catalyst pore channels due to the more coke formation, which leads to smaller surface area. Furthermore, the chemicals used for the impregnation were among the catalyst grains, especially in case of 2.0 Me/Ni ratios. For pyrolysis, a horizontal tubular furnace reactor was used at 700 °C. The highest hydrogen and syngas yields were observed using ceria- and lanthanum-covered catalysts. The maximum production of syngas and hydrogen (69.8 and 49.2 mmol/g raw material) was found in the presence of Ce/Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst with a 0.5 Me/Ni ratio.

Keywords: acoustoelastic effect, basin insulator, internal stress measurement, ultrasonic longitudinal waves
Situations of internal stress in basin insulators inside gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear (GIS) can lead to cracks, which can influence the safety and stability of apparatus. However, there is currently no research on internal stress measurements for composites of GIS basin insulators, and only measurements for surface stress. Keywords: metal oxide, moving bed, thermochemical energy storage
High-temperature thermal energy storage enables concentrated solar power plants to provide base load. Thermochemical energy storage is based on reversible gas−solid reactions and brings along the advantage of potential loss-free energy storage in the form of separated reaction products and possible high energy densities. The redox reaction of metal oxides is able to store thermal energy at elevated temperatures with air providing the gaseous reaction partner. However, due to the high temperature level, it is crucial to extract both the inherent sensible and thermochemical energies of the metal-oxide particles for enhanced system efficiency.
