Entransy Dissipation Analysis and New Irreversibility Dimension Ratio of Nanofluid Flow Through Adaptive Heating Elements
Fikret Alic
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cylindrical heating element, entransy flow dissipation, nanofluid flow, thermal entropy
A hollow electric heating cylinder is inserted inside a thermo-insulating cylindrical body of larger diameter, together representing a single cylindrical heating element. Three cylindrical heating elements, with an independent electrical source, are arranged alternately one after the other to form a heating duct. The internal diameters of the hollow heating cylinders are different, and the cylinders are arranged from the largest to the smallest in the nanofluid’s flow direction. Through these hollow heating cylinders passes nanofluid, which is thereby heated. The material of the hollow heating cylinders is a PTC (positive temperature coefficient) heating source, which allows maintaining approximately constant temperatures of the cylinders’ surfaces. The analytical analysis used three temperatures of the hollow heating cylinders of 400 K, 500 K, and 600 K. The temperatures of the heating cylinders are varied for each of the three cylindrical heating elements. In the same arrangement, th... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: half-bridge resonance circuit, light-induced degradation, regeneration, remote heating, solar cell, solar module
As the importance of the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) increases in the solar cell industry, the demand for high-efficiency solar cells is rapidly increasing. Typically, p-type passivated emitter rear contact (PERC) solar cells are the most commonly used in the industry, and their efficiency is approximately 22−23%. P-type solar cells are reported to exhibit a light-induced degradation (LID) phenomenon, in which their output constantly decreases during power generation under solar radiation, and the output significantly reduces as their reference efficiency increases. Ultra-high-efficiency solar cells, which are on high demand, have a considerable output reduction due to the LID phenomenon; hence, technologies to prevent the LID phenomenon are required. However, research on this phenomenon has not been conducted because there is no method to transfer heat to solar cells inside the encapsulant when the modules are produced. In this study, a regeneration state was formed by remote... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Gulf of Mexico, scale parameter, seasons, shape parameter, Weibull function, wind power density
In line with Mexico’s interest in determining its wind resources, in this paper, 141 locations along the states of the Gulf of Mexico have been analyzed by calculating the main wind characteristics, such as the Weibull shape (c) and scale (k) parameters, and wind power density (WPD), by using re-analysis MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications version 2) data with hourly records from 1980−2017 at a 50-m height. The analysis has been carried out using the R free software, whose its principal function is for statistical computing and graphics, to characterize the wind speed and determine its annual and seasonal (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) behavior for each state. As a result, the analysis determined two different wind seasons along the Gulf of Mexico;, it was found that in the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Tabasco wind season took place during autumn, winter, and spring, while for the states of Campeche and Yucatan, the only two states that... Subject: Materials
Keywords: AFM, carbonate, contact angle, low salinity water, non-polar oil, zeta potential
While the effect of polar-oil component on oil-brine-carbonate system wettability has been extensively investigated, there has been little quantitative analysis of the effect of non-polar components on system wettability, in particular as a function of pH. In this context, we measured the contact angle of non-polar oil on calcite surface in the presence of 10,000 ppm NaCl at pH values of 6.5, 9.5 and 11. We also measured the adhesion of non-polar oil group (−CH3) and calcite using atomic force microscopy (AFM) under the same conditions of contact angle measurements. Furthermore, to gain a deeper understanding, we performed zeta potential measurements of the non-polar oil-brine and brine-calcite interfaces, and calculated the total disjoining pressure. Our results show that the contact angle decreases from 125° to 78° with an increase in pH from 6.5 to 11. AFM measurements show that the adhesion force decreases with increasing pH. Zeta potential results indicate that an increase in pH w... [more]

Paweł Krause, Artur Nowoświat
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: artificial sun, expanded polystyrene (EPS), gray polystyrene, temperature distribution, thermographic measurement
This article presents the research studies aimed at identifying the behavior of expanded polystyrene with the addition of graphite in the conditions of exposure to solar radiation. For this purpose, a series of in situ tests and laboratory studies were carried out. Three types of material were tested, i.e. expanded polystyrene (EPS) (white polystyrene), polystyrene with the addition of graphite (gray polystyrene) and two-layer polystyrene (gray bottom layer and white top layer). Temperature distributions on the surfaces of the panels in field and laboratory conditions were determined. The distributions of temperature were recorded at varied wind impact (field conditions and laboratory conditions) and at varied impact of solar radiation (laboratory conditions). Based on the conducted experiments, differences in temperature distribution on the surfaces of the tested panels were determined. In addition, geometric changes and deformation levels of the tested white and gray expanded polysty... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: atmospheric water generator, hydrophobic material, thermoelectric cooling, water yield rate
Found in some specific scenarios, drinking water is hard for people to get, such as during expeditions and scientific investigations. First, a novel water generator with only two thermoelectric coolers (Model A) is designed for extracting water from atmospheric vapor and then experimentally studied under a small inlet air flow rate. The impact of operating conditions on surface temperatures of cold/hot sides and water yield are investigated, including the air flow rate and humidity. Alternately, to determine the super performance of Model A, a comparative experiment between Model A and a reference model (Model B) is carried out. The results suggest that both the cold/hot temperature and water yield in Model A increases with the humidity and air flow rate rising. Seen in comparisons of Model A and Model B, it is found that, at an air humidity of 90% and air flow rate of 30 m3/h, the total water yield was increased by 43.4% and the corresponding value reached the maximum increment of 66.... Subject: Materials
Keywords: composites, PbTe-PbSe-PbS, quaternary alloys, thermoelectric, ZT
Thermoelectric power generation is an energy conversion technology from heat to electric energy, which can be applied to waste heat power conversion. Among thermoelectric materials (TE), PbTe-PbSe-PbS quaternary alloys and composites are promising candidates for thermoelectric power generation applications in the mid-temperature operating range from 500 to ~850 K. Besides, the thermoelectric performance of quaternary alloys and composites is not fully optimized regarding its composition and synthesis process. In the quaternary system, PbTe-PbSe-PbS, it was found that PbS will form nanoprecipitation in the matrix of quaternary alloy for a small content of PbS (≤0.07), which reduces the lattice thermal conductivity. The power factor of PbTe-PbSe-PbS quaternary alloys can be significantly enhanced by using a band convergence in PbTe1−xSex. The band structure modifications, with the result of simultaneous PbS nanoprecipitation, give rise to a high Z T value of 2.3 at 800 K for (PbT... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: hydrothermal synthesis, Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) catalysts, perovskite, supercapacitors, three-dimensional (3D) structure
Supercapacitors are attractive as a major energy storage device due to their high coulombic efficiency and semi-permanent life cycle. Transition metal oxides are used as electrode material in supercapacitors due to their high conductivity, capacitance, and multiple oxidation states. Nanopowder transition metal oxides exhibit low specific surface area, ion diffusion, electrical conductivity, and structural stability compared with the three-dimensional (3D) structure. Furthermore, unstable performance during long-term testing can occur via structural transition. Therefore, it is necessary to synthesize a transition metal oxide with a high specific surface area and a stable structure for supercapacitor application. Transition metal oxides with a perovskite structure control structural transition and improve conductivity. In this study, a NiMnO3 perovskite oxide with a high specific surface area and electrochemical properties was obtained via hydrothermal synthesis at low temperature. Hydr... [more]

Keywords: aqueous electrolyte, binder free, carbon cloth, nanofiber, vanadium oxide, zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate, zinc-ion battery
Recently, rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZBs) have attracted extensive interest due to their safety, abundance, low cost, and low toxicity. However, aqueous electrolytes require a polymeric binder to prevent dissolution of the active material in addition to its binding properties. This study highlights binder-free, centimeter long, single-crystal, V2O5 nanofibers (BCS-VONF) on carbon cloth, as the cathode material for AZBs synthesized via a simple one-step hydrothermal process. BCS-VONF in 3.0 M Zn(OTf)2 exhibit promising electrochemical performance with excellent capacity retention. Even in the absence of a binder, BCS-VONF were found to be very stable in 3.0 M Zn(OTf)2. They will not yield to the dissolution and detachment of the active material on the current collector. The novel strategy described in this study is an essential step for the development of BCS-VONF on carbon cloth, as a promising cathode material for AZBs.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: furfural residue, lignocellulose, value-added products, waste utilization
As a by-product of lignocellulosic depolymerization for furfural production, furfural residue (FR) is composed of residual cellulose, lignin, humic acid, and other small amounts of materials, which have high reuse value. However, due to the limitation of furfural production scale and production technology, the treatment of FR has many problems such as high yield, concentrated stacking, strong acidity, and difficult degradation. This leads to the limited treatment methods and high treatment cost of furfural residue. At present, most of the furfural enterprises can only be piled up at will, buried in soil, or directly burned. The air, soil, and rivers are polluted and the ecological balance is destroyed. Therefore, how to deal with furfural residue reasonably needs to be solved. In this review, value-added products for furfural residue conversion are described in detail in the fields of soil culture, catalytic hydrolysis, thermal decomposition, and porous adsorption. The paper presents a comprehensive study of the physicochemical and electrochemical properties of a new nano-microporous non-woven composite separation material for a lithium-ion battery based on nano- and microfibers of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and its copolymer with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), obtained by capillary-less electrospinning. A technique for the synthesis of separation material was developed, and the composition of the polymeric solution and the electrospinning conditions were optimized to produce polymer nano-microfibers with the required physicochemical characteristics. The optimal synthesis conditions for the separation material were determined. Higher porosity of the separation material and increased wettability in the most common electrolyte compositions contribute to the higher conductivity of the obtained separation material in comparison with the widely used commercial separation materials based on polypropylene (PP). The working characteristics of the se... [more]

Keywords: Latent Heat Storage, melting enthalpy, melting temperature, organic phase change materials, price-performance analysis
Alkanes are widely used as phase change materials (PCMs), especially for thermal energy storage (TES), due to their high thermal capacity, stability, availability, and non-corrosiveness. However, the drawbacks of alkanes are low heat conductivity and high cost. Our aim was to explore alternative organic PCMs for TES and to compare such compounds based on the relationship between their performance and cost. For this purpose, we analysed several commercially available products, including long chain alkanes, alcohols, monocarboxylic acid, amines, ethers and esters in high purities. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (DSC and TGA) were used to measure the melting point, melting enthalpy and thermal stability of these compounds. The materials were classified according to their melting temperature. In order to compare the compounds, we calculated from the measured enthalpies and the price list provided by producers a coefficient that represents factors in both the perform... [more]
The Low-Dimensional Three-Dimensional Tin Halide Perovskite: Film Characterization and Device Performance

Subject: Materials
Keywords: low-dimensional, perovskite solar cells, photovoltaics, tin-based
Halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are considered as one of the most promising candidates for the next generation solar cells as their power conversion efficiency (PCE) has rapidly increased up to 25.2%. However, the most efficient halide perovskite materials all contain toxic lead. Replacing the lead cation with environmentally friendly tin (Sn) is proposed as an important alternative. Today, the inferior performance of Sn-based PSCs mainly due to two challenging issues, namely the facile oxidation of Sn2+ to Sn4+ and the low formation energies of Sn vacancies. Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskite, in which the large sized organic cations confine the corner sharing BX6 octahedra, exhibits higher formation energy than that of three-dimensional (3D) structure halide perovskite. The approach of mixing a small amount of 2D into 3D Sn-based perovskites was demonstrated as an efficient method to produce high performance perovskite films. In this review, we first provide an overview of k... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: finite element (FE) analysis, macro capsules, mortar, phase change materials
This paper presents a numerical investigation of thermal response of mortar panels, incorporating macro-encapsulated paraffin in different forms. Two types of macro capsules were fabricated and tested in this study using an instrumented hot plate device. The experimental results show that macro encapsulated paraffin reduced the temperature and increased time lag in the mortar panels due to the latent heat capacity of paraffin. Finite element models adopting the effective heat capacity method to model phase change effects were able to capture the overall thermal response of panels incorporated with paraffin well. Then, a parametric study was conducted using the validated finite element (FE) modelling technique to investigate the effects of different forms of macro capsules, the quantity of paraffin and the position of macro capsules. It was found that the tube and sphere macro capsules showed similar thermal responses, while the plate shaped capsules may cause a non-uniform temperature... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: algae, Carbon Dioxide, flue gas, photobioreactor, power plant, utilization
Microalgae are a potential means of recycling CO2 from industrial point sources. With this in mind, a novel photobioreactor (PBR) was designed and deployed at a coal-fired power plant. To ascertain the feasibility of using waste heat from the power plant to heat algae cultures during cold periods, two heat transfer models were constructed to quantify PBR cooling times. The first, which was based on tabulated data, material properties and the physical orientation of the PBR tubes, yielded a range of heat transfer coefficients of 19−64 W m−2 K−1 for the PBR at wind speeds of 1−10 m s−1. The second model was based on data collected from the PBR and gave an overall heat transfer coefficient of 24.8 W m−2 K−1. Energy penalties associated with waste heat utilization were found to incur an 18%−103% increase in energy consumption, resulting in a 22%−70% reduction in CO2 capture for the scenarios considered. A techno-economic analysis showed that the cost of heat integration equipment increased... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cement, diffusion, non-Newtonian fluids, rheology, variable viscosity
Understanding the rheological behavior of cement slurries is important in cement and petroleum industries. In this paper, we study the fully developed flow of a cement slurry inside a wellbore. The slurry is modeled as a non-linear fluid, where a constitutive relation for the viscous stress tensor based on a modified form of the second grade (Rivlin−Ericksen) fluid is used;we also propose a diffusion flux vector for the concentration of particles. The one-dimensional forms of the governing equations and the boundary conditions are made dimensionless and solved numerically. A parametric study is performed to present the effect of various dimensionless numbers on the velocity and the volume fraction profiles.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: fatigue analysis, laminated blade, ultimate strength analysis, vertical axis wind turbine
Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) exhibit many advantages and great application prospect as compared with horizontal ones. However, large-scale VAWTs are rarely reported, and the codes and guidelines for designing large-scale VAWTs are lacking. Designing a large-scale composite blade requires precise finite element (FE) modeling and stress analysis at the lamina level, while precise modeling of an entire VAWT is computationally intensive. This study proposes a comprehensive fatigue and ultimate strength analysis framework for VAWTs. The framework includes load determination, finite element (FE) model establishment, and fatigue and ultimate strength analyses. Wind load determination has been presented in the companion paper. In this study, laminated shell elements are used to model blades, which are separately analyzed by ignoring the influence of the tower and arms. Meanwhile, beam elements are used to model an entire VAWT to conduct a structural analysis of other structural componen... [more]

In the present work, an experimental investigation is performed to assess the thermal and electrical performance of a photovoltaic solar panel cooling with multi-walled carbon nanotube−water/ethylene glycol (50:50) nano-suspension (MWCNT/WEG50). The prepared nanofluid was stabilized using an ultrasonic homogenizer together with the addition of 0.1vol% of nonylphenol ethoxylates at pH = 8.9. To reduce the heat loss and to improve the heat transfer rate between the coolant and the panel, a cooling jacket was designed and attached to the solar panel. It was also filled with multi-walled carbon nanotube−paraffin phase change material (PCM) and the cooling pipes were passed through the PCM. The MWCNT/WEG50 nanofluid was introduced into the pipes, while the nano-PCM was in the cooling jacket. The electrical and thermal power of the system and equivalent electrical−thermal power of the system was assessed at various local times and at different mass fractions of MWCNTs. Results showed that wi... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CFD simulation, strip analysis, turbulent wind, vertical-axis wind turbines, wind load simulation
When compared with horizontal-axis wind turbines, vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have the primary advantages of insensitivity to wind direction and turbulent wind, simple structural configuration, less fatigue loading, and easy maintenance. In recent years, large-scale VAWTs have attracted considerable attention. Wind loads on a VAWT must be determined prior to structural analyses. However, traditional blade element momentum theory cannot consider the effects of turbulence and other structural components. Moreover, a large VAWT cannot simply be regarded as a planar structure, and 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is computationally prohibitive. In this regard, a practical wind load simulation method for VAWTs based on the strip analysis method and 2D shear stress transport (SST) k-ω model is proposed. A comparison shows that the wind pressure and aerodynamic forces simulated by the 2D SST k-ω model match well with those obtained by 2.5D large eddy simulation (LES).... [more]

Keywords: ash granulation, combustion of biomass pellets, use of ash
As a step towards the diversification of electricity and heat sources, the EU countries suggest the use of biomass. The combustion of biomass poses the problem of the use of ash produced in the process. There are fluctuations in the properties of energetic biomass, which results in high variability of ash obtained by combustion, especially in terms of specific conductivity (EC) (8.1−9.7 mS·cm−1), the total content of components and their bioavailability. The combustion of biomass leads to large fluctuations in the total content of carbon in the ash (13.6%−28.6%). In this way, waste material with very different biological properties and cation exchange capacity is obtained. Ash from the combustion of biomass is an alkalizing material, rich in Ca, K and Mg carbonates (4.5%). The high average bioavailability of Pb (87.4%), Cd (63.1%) and Zn (46.9%) present in the ash is an environmental problem. The mobility of these heavy metals was reduced by half by the addition of bentonite during the... [more]

Ceramic-coated materials used in different engineering sectors are the focus of world-wide interest and have generated a need for inspection techniques that detect very small structural anomalies. Non-destructive testing is increasingly being used to evaluate coating thickness and to test for coating flaws. The main pros of non-destructive testing is that the tested object remains intact and available for continued use afterward. This paper reports on an integrated, non-destructive testing approach that combines infrared thermography and acousto-ultrasonics to evaluate advanced aerospace sandwich structure materials with the aim of exploring any potential for detecting defects of more than one type. Combined, these two techniques successfully detected fabrication defects, including inclusions and material loss.

The thermal energy storage properties of a working fluid can be modified by the exothermic and endothermic adsorption and desorption of fluid molecules in the micro/nanoporous materials. In this study, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis experiments and molecular simulations (molecular dynamics, MD, and grand canonical Monte Carlo, GCMC) were employed to examine the thermal energy storage properties of the UIO-66 metal organic framework material, UIO-66/H2O nanofluids and pure water. Our results showed that the molecular simulation calculations were, in principle, consistent with the obtained experimental data. The thermal energy storage performance of UIO-66/H2O nanofluids was enhanced with the increase in the UIO-66 mass fraction. In addition, the differences between the simulation calculations and experimental results could be mainly ascribed to the different structures of UIO-66 and the evaporation of fluid samples. Furthermore, this work indicated that molecular simulations contribute... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: effectiveness, industrial automation systems, Industry 4.0, mining machines, OEE model
Growing competition in the market for energy raw materials needed for power generation has led to an increasing number of measures being undertaken in the mining sector to reduce the unit costs of mining production. One of the areas that offer considerable savings in this regard is the utilisation of the technical resources owned by mines. This article is therefore focussed on analysing the utilisation effectiveness of these machines, based on the data recorded by industrial automation systems, as well as on measurements from independent surveying and chemical analysis of the excavated material’s quality. For this purpose, a methodology was developed to use the data about the operational parameters of the machines in order to analyse the effectiveness of their utilisation. It was assumed that the reliability of this assessment would depend mainly on the quality of the data used to conduct it. It was also assumed that using independent data sources for the analysis would provide objecti... [more]
