February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ALK, CO2 emissions, electrolyzer, green hydrogen, LCOH, PEM, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, techno-economic
Green hydrogen is becoming an increasingly important energy supply source worldwide. The great potential for the use of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source makes it an attractive energy carrier. In this paper, we discuss the potential of producing green hydrogen in Jordan. Aqaba, located in the south of Jordan, was selected to study the potential for producing green hydrogen, due to its proximity to a water source (i.e., the Red Sea). Two models were created for two electrolyzer types using MATLAB. The investigated electrolyzers were alkaline water (ALK) and polymeric electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzers. The first model was used to compare the required capacity of the PV solar system using ALK and PEM from 2022 to 2025, depending on the learning curves for the development of these technologies. In addition, this model was used to predict the total investment costs for the investigated electrolyzers. Then, a techno-economic model was constructed to predict the feasibility of us... [more]

Keywords: ambient assisted living (AAL), anomaly detection, demand response (DR), energy disaggregation, energy management, nonintrusive load monitoring
Load monitoring systems make it possible to obtain information on the status of the various loads powered by an electrical system. The term “electrical load” indicates any device or circuit that absorbs energy from the system to which it is connected, and which therefore influences electrical quantities such as power, voltage, and current. These monitoring systems, designed for applications related to energy efficiency, can also be used in other applications. This article analyzes in detail how the information derived from Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) systems can be used in order to create Energy Management Systems (EMS), Demand Response (DR), anomaly detection, maintenance, and Ambient Assisted Living (AAL).

Worldwide energy costs have grown in recent years due to the dwindling global fossil fuel resources and the increased reliance on them for global energy production. This is a common scenario in many nations, including Sri Lanka. As a developing country, Sri Lanka should encourage the diversification of its renewable energy supplies using locally available resources. In this regard, Sri Lanka can promote the use of agricultural residues for energy generation. The present work explores the energy potential of the solid waste generated by the rice industry: rice straw (RS) and rice husk (RH). A new approach was developed using statistical data on rice production and paddy cultivation in each district of the island. The obtained data were integrated into a geographic information system (GIS) to provide geo-referenced results. A physico-chemical characterization of the RS and RH was conducted to correlate the properties of raw materials to their potential energy generation. As an energy gen... [more]

Nian Li, Da Xu, Xiangjun Hao, Jianhui Li
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analysis, axial flux, demagnetization, design, flux-switching, magnetization, memory machine, series PM
This paper presents a new topology of an axial flux-switching memory machine with series-type permanent magnets (SPMs) to improve the flux regulation capability. The key idea was to combine low coercive force (LCF) PMs, which can be magnetized and demagnetized readily, with high coercive force (HCF) PMs in series to provide a variable air-gap magnetic flux. The flux regulating principle and the forward magnetization effect of HCF PMs on LCF PMs are presented and discussed. Based on 3D finite element analysis (FEA), the magnetization variation of LCF PMs and the electromagnetic performances of the machine under different magnetization states were investigated. Simulation results showed that the air-gap magnetic flux could be weakened by up to 45% by using a magnetization current impulse, significantly extending the PM motor’s flux-weakening speed range. Finally, a prototype machine was built, and experiments were performed to validate the predictions. The basic experimental validation s... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: HTHP, steady-state model, surge pressure, tool joint
Accurate surge pressure prediction during tripping is significant to ensure drilling safety. Based on the theory of wellbore hydraulics and heat transfer, a surge pressure prediction model considering the influence of HTHP and joints is established in this paper. The finite difference method is used to solve the wellbore flow model. Compared with the measured surge pressure, it was found that the error between the predicted and measured values after considering the above factors was only 0.89%. The influence of dimensionless joint outer diameter, joint length and drill string tripping speed on the surge pressure was further analyzed. The results show that the existence of joints increases the surge pressure. When the dimensionless joint outer diameter was increased from 0.70 to 0.91, the surge pressure increased by 76%. Neglecting the effect of the joint will cause a large error in calculating the surge pressure. In addition, the surge pressure is positively correlated with the drill s... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, electrification, energy savings, industry, process heat, textile
The textile industry accounts for approximately 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. There is a significant opportunity to decarbonize the textile industry by electrification of process heating where low- or zero-carbon electricity is used. Electrified process heating can be achieved through cross-cutting technologies without modifying the textile process equipment and/or through replacing the existing equipment with technologies that employ electromagnetic or resistance heating techniques for specific end-use applications. This paper aims to investigate the potential for electrification of process heating in the textile wet-processing industry in three of the top textile-producing and exporting regions in the world. To do this, two separate technology pathways, i.e., electrification through (a) industrial heat pumps and (b) textile end-use processes are developed and analyzed. The results show that the total potential final energy and CO2 savings due to electrification in both scena... [more]

Keywords: AC loss, CORC, HTS cable, topology
Compared with the traditional cable, the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cable has the advantages of low loss and large capacity transmission. At present, the research on HTS cables mainly focuses on the calculation of AC loss, the performance under specific working conditions and cooling system design. Relatively little research has been carried out on the basic design and overall layout optimization of the cables. In this paper, an HTS cable with a rated current of 4 kA was designed. Firstly, according to the selected superconducting cable parameters, the body design of cables with different structures was carried out and the corresponding finite element models were built. Then, the performance analysis of HTS cables with different layouts was carried out based on the proposed cable performance evaluation indicators and the CORC double-layer structure was determined as the scheme of this cable. Finally, the AC loss of the cable with this topology was calculated to be 9.81 J/m... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coupling mechanism, double-D coil, uniform magnetic field, wireless power transfer
In a wireless power transfer (WPT) system, misalignment on the transceiver side has a major impact on the transmission efficiency. However, a uniform magnetic field can mitigate the detrimental impact of offsets on the system performance. In this paper, an optimized double-D (DD) coil is proposed by dividing the wires into two groups. The parametric design approach proceeds from the outside to the inside of the coil. The uniformity of the magnetic field of the improved design is increased by 20.7% compared to that of a regular DD coil. The average transmission efficiency of the final test prototype can reach 85%, and the offset rates in the X and Y directions are only 3.21% and 3.43%, respectively, when misalignment occurs. This design can effectively improve the anti-offset ability of the system and can be generalized to the design of other types of coils.

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bio-inspired flow, empirical approach, individualized cooling, live garment, pulsation cooling, wearable temperature conditioning
Temperature-related frustrations, such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, hypothermia, and frost damage, are some of the most prevalent health risks encountered by humans. The aggravation may be lethal for individuals who reside or work in conditions of protracted and high temperature. Temperature-control technologies, such as underfloor heating and air conditioners, have been studied and applied to give individuals with a pleasant and, more crucially, an endurable temperature. However, it may be challenging to install these technologies in an exterior or enclosed space. In addition, they are inflexible for individual requirements, such as mobility and personal-temperature management. A wearable bio-inspired pulsing-flow (discontinuous) cooling system, which can significantly enhance cooling performance, is proposed in this work. The proposed system is implemented with valves to generate pulsating flows. Given that traditional mechanical-valve actuation systems continue to face limits in... [more]

Keywords: Dynamic Modelling, floating PV, hydrostatic analysis, LCOE, marine offshore renewable energy, Mediterranean sea, solar energy, Technoeconomic Analysis
In recent years, numerous projects for floating PV systems have been developed. These plants of various sizes have mainly been installed on enclosed lakes or basins characterised by the absence of external forcing related to waves and currents. However, offshore installation would allow the development of such plants in areas where land is not available, such as islands. This paper analyses the state of the art of floating PV, describes the design of a floating PV platform and the development of a numerical model to evaluate the system performance in an offshore environment. The case study of the island of Lampedusa is then analyzed: starting from a single floating foundation with its mooring system, a floating PV system is designed to meet the island’s electricity needs. In order to provide the competitiveness of the system, a techno-economic analysis is carried out, evaluating the main cost items of Capex, Opex and LCOE. Although the LCOE obtained is significantly higher than a tradi... [more]

Keywords: abnormal detection, oil drilling, overflow, self-supervised learning, time series prediction, transformer
Oil drilling has always been considered a vital part of resource exploitation, and during which overflow is the most common and tricky threat that may cause blowout, a catastrophic accident. Therefore, to prevent further damage, it is necessary to detect overflow as early as possible. However, due to the unbalanced distribution and the lack of labeled data, it is difficult to design a suitable solution. To address this issue, an improved Transformer Framework based on self-supervised learning is proposed in this paper, which can accurately detect overflow 20 min in advance when the labeled data are limited and severely imbalanced. The framework includes a self-supervised pre-training scheme, which focuses on long-term time dependence that offers performance benefits over fully supervised learning on downstream tasks and makes unlabeled data useful in the training process. Next, to better extract temporal features and adapt to multi-task training process, a Transformer-based auto-encode... [more]

Keywords: Design of Experiment (D.O.E), Finite-Element Analysis (FEA), high efficiency, Line Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (LSPMSM), transient state
In this paper, the transient state analysis of a Line-Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (LSPMSM) and the optimum design for high efficiency were studied. In the case of an LSPMSM, aluminum bars and permanent magnets are inserted in the rotor. Since it has aluminum bars, it can be directly started on-line without closed-loop control at the time of starting, like an induction motor. Furthermore, once driven, it rotates at a synchronous speed due to the permanent magnets in the steady state. Theoretically, since the rotor bars have no induced current, copper loss does not occur in the rotor bars. Further, because of the inserted permanent magnets, an LSPMSM has a higher power density than an induction motor with the same output power. However, since it is driven directly on-line, the transient state is longer than that of a synchronous motor driven by an inverter. Therefore, it is important to analyze the characteristics of the transient state depending on the rotor shape in the LS... [more]

Keywords: modal analysis, pumped storage power station, steady state response, underground powerhouse, vibration
With the rapid development of pumped storage, the vibration problems caused by the operation of power stations have become increasingly prominent. In this paper, a large-scale pumped-storage power station is taken as the research object, and a three-dimensional refined finite element model of the underground powerhouse including the surrounding rock mass is established. Based on the analysis of the vibration source of the powerhouse and the water diversion pipeline, the modal and dynamic response analysis of the underground powerhouse of the hydropower station is carried out, and the distribution law of the larger vibration displacement position is revealed. The calculation results show that under the premise that the vibration source is selected reasonably and the numerical model is accurate, the main frequency of the underground powerhouse structure can be obtained more accurately. After optimizing the design of the underground powerhouse based on the calculation results, the resonan... [more]

Keywords: flux-switching, permanent magnet generator, permanent magnet synchronous machine, V-shaped, wind power generation
Flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machines have attracted wide attention in many rotating applications that require high-power density. In this research, we propose for the first time a novel six-phase FSPM generator with a stator featuring a V-shaped flux-focusing magnet arrangement. The design is targeted for low-speed wind power generation. To achieve the design objectives as a wind generator, the highly comprehensive structural parameters, including the number of rotor poles, split ratio, and rotor pole width, are designed and optimized using 2D finite-element analysis. From findings, the optimal stator/rotor pole combination is discovered to be 12/19 for the considered power and speed requirements. When compared to the initial structure, the optimized structure of the V-shaped FSPM generator is found to produce a significant improvement in EMF, cogging torque, electromagnetic torque, power, and efficiency. The power-generating performance of the proposed FSPM generator is fou... [more]

In any geological subsurface fluid injection, a viable top seal is required to contain the vertical movement of the injected fluid plume. However, seal integrity assessment is challenging because of the uncertainties possessed by various parameters. A probabilistic solution might be more appropriate when significant uncertainties are present. In this study, we evaluate Drake shale caprock structural reliability using a stochastic method. Drake shale is the primary top seal in the Aurora CO2 storage site, located in the Horda Platform area in the northern North Sea. Based on the lithological variations, Drake caprock shale is divided into two parts designated by upper and lower units. Six model scenarios from the upper and lower Drake units have been tested. The probabilistic structural failures of varying model scenarios are estimated using the First-Order Reliability Method (FORM). Drake Formation shale shows a considerably low probability of failure (~0) with a high reliability index... [more]

The growing production of plastic waste and improper dumping after use has become a worldwide challenge. This waste is a substantial source of petroleum and can be effectively converted into pyrolytic oil and other useful products. A statistical prediction of the rate constants is essential for optimizing pyrolysis process parameters, such as activation energy (Ea), frequency factor (Ao), temperature (T), and kinetic rate constants (k). In this research, we utilized Box−Behnken using RSM with Design Expert software to predict statistical rate constants at 500 °C and 550 °C. The efficiency of the predicted rate constants was investigated and compared to the findings of experimental rate constants extracted from the literature. At 500 °C, the estimated rate constants did not reveal a significant rise in the oil output since these constants promoted high gas yield. Compared to the experimental rate constants, statistically predicted rate constants at 550 °C demonstrated substantially high... [more]

To integrate large shares of renewable energy sources in electric grids, large-scale and long-duration (4−8+ h) electric energy storage technologies must be used. A promising storage technology of this kind is pumped thermal electricity storage based on Brayton cycles. The paper’s novel contribution is in the techno-economic comparison of two alternative configurations of such storage technology. Liquid-based and solid-based pumped thermal electricity storage were studied and compared from the techno-economic point of view. The cost impacts of the operating fluid (air, nitrogen, and argon), power rating, and nominal capacity was assessed. Air was the most suitable operating fluid for both technologies, simplifying the plant management and achieving cost reductions between 1% and 7% compared to argon, according to the considered configuration. Despite a more complex layout and expensive thermal storage materials, liquid-based systems resulted in being the cheapest, especially for large... [more]

In the literature, different DC/DC power electronic converters (PECs) have been found to interconnect high-voltage DC and low-voltage DC grids in the electric power distribution networks of aircraft. In this scenario, the dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter has been shown to be one of the most promising topologies. The main disadvantages of this PEC are the large output capacitance required to satisfy more electric aircraft (MEA) requirements and the high conduction losses produced in low-voltage power devices of (LV). Therefore, this paper proposes analytical models to determine the voltage ripple and root-mean-square (RMS) current in DC bus capacitors of DABs considering different modulation strategies. Moreover, an analysis of the design space in an MEA case study is performed to evaluate the influence of the design variables in power losses of power devices and peak-to-peak voltage ripple in DC bus capacitors.
