Krystian Czernek, Stanisław Witczak
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: liquid film, optoelectronic system, two-phase flow, very viscous liquid
The paper presents the characteristics of the original optoelectronic system for measuring the values of hydrodynamics of two-phase downward gas-very viscous liquid flow. The measurement methods and results of the research on selected values describing gas−oil two-phase flow are presented. The study was conducted in vertical pipes with diameters of 12.5, 16, 22, and 54 mm. The research was conducted with the superficial velocities of air jg = 0−29.9 m/s and oil jl = 0−0.254 m/s, which corresponded to the values of gas stream density gg = (0−37.31) kg/(m2s) and of liquid gl = (0.61−226.87) kg/(m2s), in order to determine the influence of air and oil streams on the character of liquid films. The variations in oil viscosity were applied in the range ηl = (0.055−1.517) Pas. The study results that were obtained with optical probes along with computer image analysis system revealed vast research opportunities in terms of the identification of gas−liquid two-phase downward flow structures tha... Demand Flexibility Management for Buildings-to-Grid Integration with Uncertain Generation
Vahab Rostampour, Thom S. Badings, Jacquelien M. A. Scherpen
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Buildings-to-Grid integration, demand flexibility management, Distribution System Operators (DSO), future energy markets, power systems, stochastic model predictive control, Transmission System Operator (TSO), uncertain generation
We present a Buildings-to-Grid (BtG) integration framework with intermittent wind-power generation and demand flexibility management provided by buildings. First, we extend the existing BtG models by introducing uncertain wind-power generation and reformulating the interactions between the Transmission System Operator (TSO), Distribution System Operators (DSO), and buildings. We then develop a unified BtG control framework to deal with forecast errors in the wind power, by considering ancillary services from both reserves and demand-side flexibility. The resulting framework is formulated as a finite-horizon stochastic model predictive control (MPC) problem, which is generally hard to solve due to the unknown distribution of the wind-power generation. To overcome this limitation, we present a tractable robust reformulation, together with probabilistic feasibility guarantees. We demonstrate that the proposed demand flexibility management can substitute the traditional reserve scheduling... [more]

Dania Ortiz, Vítor Leal
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy planning, energy policy effectiveness, energy policy evaluation, energy policy indicators, Sustainability
This work presents a review that aims to characterize the policy evaluation practices regarding the public policies on energy, with a focus on the metrics: concerns, objectives, and indicators. As key novelty, emphasis was put into finding attributes and metrics that can be used to assess effectiveness, not only efficacy or efficiency. The concerns and objectives were organized into four categories: Institutional, Environmental, Economic, and Social. For every category, detailed and condensed concerns were identified. It was attempted to find indicators for every condensed concern, which resulted in 15 core indicators.
Research on the Influence of Abrupt Climate Changes on the Analysis of Typical Meteorological Year in China
Xinying Fan, Bin Chen, Changfeng Fu, Lingyun Li
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: abrupt climate change, building energy performance analysis, meteorological records, typical meteorological month, typical meteorological year
The conventional typical meteorological year (TMY) based on continuous-year original meteorological records without considering abrupt climate changes (ACC) may not be able to represent a real “typical” climate properly. Consequently, building performance analyses and simulations based on TMY may be not accurate. Current research rarely tackles this issue in TMY development. This paper presents an innovative TMY development with the consideration of ACC in the original meteorological records. It is based on the Chinese standard weather database method (CSWD) with the meteorological records of six Chinese cities in different climate zones. It applies the Moving t-test method to identify and exclude ACC points and to refine the timescales for TMY development. It also depicts the development of individual typical meteorological months again with the ACC impact to improve the accuracy of TMY. The method has been verified in several building energy consumption and thermal comfort analyses.... [more]
Technical and Economic Analysis of the External Surface Heating System on the Example of a Car Park
Krzysztof Nowak, Sławomir Rabczak
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ground heat exchangers, heat pump, outdoor heating, parking heating, renewable energy sources
In winter, for our own safety, as well as for the comfort of the user, we are obliged to remove or mitigate the defects related to the accumulation of snow and ice on flat surfaces, such as: pavements, stairs, driveways, parking lots, roofs, squares, or sports fields. Snow and ice from these surfaces can be removed by a variety of methods. Chemical, mechanical, or heating methods are most often used. Mechanical and manual methods cannot always be used. They also often do not allow the complete removal of snow and ice from the surface. In chemical methods, the chemicals used can have a negative impact on the environment and the surface itself. Heating external surfaces using electric heating cables or liquid-filled pipes is one of the safest and most effective ways to remove snow and ice from the available methods. The article presents a technical concept of a car park heating system with the use of various heating systems. The main thesis of the work is the possibility of using heating... [more]
Induction Motor Fault Diagnosis Based on Zero-Sequence Current Analysis
Arkadiusz Duda, Piotr Drozdowski
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: broken rotor bars, eccentricity, fault diagnostic, induction motor diagnostic, magnetic core saturation, neutral current, zero-sequence current, ZSC
This paper presents some considerations regarding the application of the stator zero-sequence current component (ZSC) in the fault detection of cage induction machines, including the effects of magnetic core saturation. Faults such as rotor cage asymmetry and static, dynamic, and mixed eccentricity were considered. The research started by developing a harmonic motor model, which allowed us to obtain a voltage equation for the zero-sequence current component. The equation allowed us to extract formulas of typical frequencies for particular fault types. Next, in order to verify the effectiveness of ZSC in induction motor fault diagnosis, finite element calculations and laboratory tests were carried out for the previously mentioned faults for delta and wye connections with neutral wire stator winding configurations.

Subject: Other
Keywords: electric vehicle, resonant compensations, wireless charging, wireless power transfer
In this paper, the design procedure of an electric vehicle (EV) wireless charger is presented. Unlike most of the systems available in the literature, the proposed charging system is regulated from the vehicle side. The on-board electrical circuit automatically adapts the resonant compensation to guarantee compatibility with the primary inverter characteristics and achieve high transmission efficiency without communication between sides. Moreover, the proposed control strategy, used to regulate the secondary full active rectifier (FAR), allows the supply of the the EV battery, maximizing the efficiency during the whole charging process.

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CCHP microgrid, comprehensive value, electrical energy storage, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, robust optimization
The combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) microgrid system is good for energy gradient utility. At the same time, it can promote the renewable energy (RE) consumption and abate environmental pollution. In a CCHP microgrid system, the electrical energy storage (EES), which can storage and release electrical energy, plays an indispensable role. A robust optimization model of the CCHP microgrid participating in power market transaction is constructed to calculate the CCHP microgrid operation cost in 4 cases. The results show that the EES can significantly reduce the cost of the CCHP microgrid by 13.21%, compared with 8.36% in Group 1 without renewable energy. The EES can reduce the reserved capacity of micro gas turbine units to deal with the precariousness of RE generation and then reduce the CCHP microgrid operation cost by reducing the purchase of energy from the power grid and arbitrage. Finally, the calculation method of comprehensive value of the EES is constructed. The compre... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fault-tolerant, markov model, multistring converter, photovoltaic, reliability
In photovoltaic (PV) systems, the reliability of the system components, especially the power converters, is a major concern in obtaining cost effective solutions. In order to guarantee service continuity in the case of failure of elements of the PV converter, in particular, semiconductor switching devices, a solution is to design power converter with fault-tolerance capability. This can be realized by aggregating hardware redundancy on an existing converter, providing the possibility of replacement of faulty elements. This paper evaluates the reliability of a fault-tolerant power electronics converter for PV multistring application. The considered fault-tolerant design includes a single redundant switching leg, which is used in order to reconfigure the structure in case of a switch failure either on DC-AC or DC-DC stages. This paper details the reliability estimation of the considered PV multistring fault-tolerant converter. Furthermore, a comparison with a conventional structure witho... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: human thermoregulation model, local skin temperature, older people, thermal comfort, thermal sensation
Human thermoregulation models can predict human thermal responses to evaluate thermal comfort and help create a healthy environment, while their applicability to older people has not been sufficiently validated. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the Stolwijk model and the Tanabe model for predicting older people’s mean and local skin temperatures under thermal transient conditions. Eighteen healthy older people were recruited and exposed to transient environments including neutral (26 °C), low-temperature (23 and 21 °C), and high-temperature (29 and 32 °C) conditions. The local skin temperatures of the subjects were measured and compared to predictions of the Stolwijk model and the Tanabe model. The results revealed that the Stolwijk model and the Tanabe model could accurately predict the mean skin temperature of older people under neutral and high-temperature conditions, while their predictive accuracy declined under low-temperature conditions. Increased deviations were... [more]
Upholding Safety in Future Energy Systems: The Need for Systemic Risk Assessment

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: biogas, energy transition, hazard analysis, HAZOP, Hydrogen, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, risk assessment, safety, STPA
This paper argues that energy systems are becoming increasingly complex, and illustrates how new types of hazards emerge from an ongoing transition towards renewable energy sources. It shows that the energy sector relies heavily on risk assessment methods that are analytic, and that systemic methods provide important additional insights. A case study of the Dutch gas sector illustrates this by comparing the hazard and operability study (HAZOP, analytic) with the system-theoretic process analysis (STPA, systemic). The contribution is twofold. This paper illustrates how system hazards will remain underestimated by sustained use of only analytic methods, and it highlights the need to study the organization of safety in energy transitions. We conclude that appropriate risk assessment for future energy systems involves both analytic and systemic risk assessments.

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Chinese market, cost economy, fuel cell, hydrogen energy, transportation field
China has become a major market for hydrogen used in fuel cells in the transportation field. It is key to control the cost of hydrogen to open up the Chinese market. The development status and trends of China’s hydrogen fuel industry chain were researched. A hydrogen energy cost model was established in this paper from five aspects: raw material cost, fixed cost of production, hydrogen purification cost, carbon trading cost, and transportation cost. The economic analysis of hydrogen was applied to hydrogen transported in the form of high-pressure hydrogen gas or cryogenic liquid hydrogen and produced by natural gas, coal, and electrolysis of water. It was found that the cost of hydrogen from natural gas and coal is currently lower, while it is greatly affected by the hydrogen purification cost and the carbon trading price. Considering the impact of future production technologies, raw material costs, and rising requirements for sustainable energy development on the hydrogen energy cost,... [more]

Sattar Jabbar Murad Algayyim, Andrew P. Wandel
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acetone-butanol-ethanol mixture, biodiesel, emissions, spray visualization
This study investigates the impact of an acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) mixture on spray parameters, engine performance and emission levels of neat cottonseed biodiesel and neat diesel blends. The spray test was carried out using a high-speed camera, and the engine test was conducted on a variable compression diesel engine. Adding an ABE blend can increase the spray penetration of both neat biodiesel and diesel due to the low viscosity and surface tension, thereby enhancing the vaporization rate and combustion efficiency. A maximum in-cylinder pressure value was recorded for the ABE-diesel blend. The brake power (BP) of all ABE blends was slightly reduced due to the low heating values of ABE blends. Exhaust gas temperature (EGT), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions were also reduced with the addition of the ABE blend to neat diesel and biodiesel by 14−17%, 11−13% and 25−54%, respectively, compared to neat diesel. Unburnt hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions were reduced with... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EOR, Petroleum, reservoir simulation, SPI, surfactant-polymer, TVD
The traditional Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes allow improving the performance of mature oilfields after waterflooding projects. Chemical EOR processes modify different physical properties of the fluids and/or the rock in order to mobilize the oil that remains trapped. Furthermore, combined processes have been proposed to improve the performance, using the properties and synergy of the chemical agents. This paper presents a novel simulator developed for a combined surfactant/polymer flooding in EOR processes. It studies the flow of a two-phase, five-component system (aqueous and organic phases with water, petroleum, surfactant, polymer and salt) in porous media. Polymer and surfactant together affect each other’s interfacial and rheological properties as well as the adsorption rates. This is known in the industry as Surfactant-Polymer Interaction (SPI). The simulations showed that optimum results occur when both chemical agents are injected overlapped, with the polymer in the fi... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: battery energy storage system, distributed energy resources, energy management system, linear programming, net-metering, photovoltaic system, self-consumption, smart grid
This paper presents a comprehensive study of the technical and economic benefits that a typical residential prosumer may experience when investing in a solar photovoltaic (PV) system with a battery energy storage system (BESS). To this end, a home energy management system has been designed to simulate the prosumer’s daily operation, considering a novel method for calculating battery degradation while minimizing its operating costs. In order to contribute to the regulatory review process of the distributed generation underway in Brazil, a set of PV+BESS configurations has been assessed under the current and future regulatory scenarios proposed for discussion by the Brazilian regulatory agency. Although the results demonstrate that the prosumer’s self-consumption rate may increase up to 14% with the BESS coupling in the PV system, the investment proved to be economically unattractive in the current regulatory scenario and practically unfeasible in any of the proposed future scenarios. Keywords: back flashover, breakeven costs, dips, earthing profiles, lightning surge arrester, tower footing resistance
Earthing and protective devices such as line surge arrestors (LSAs) play an important role in areas with high lightning occurrence for overhead HVAC lines’ performance. A lightning stroke of high magnitude can lead to back flash-overs, and the resultant power surge on the phase conductor can cause instigate the line breaker operating to extinguish the power surge. This operation of the protective devices leads to consumer interruptions on the network, a loss of production, and negatively affects the economy. Studies have shown that reducing an earthing system’s values, which itself is costly, may not be sufficient to prevent back flashover and the associated customer production cost loss. A code was developed to determine the possibility of back flashover and the cost of various earthing schemes utilizing the MATLAB software analysis tool. This paper determines the possibility of a back flashover for various combinations of lightning strokes and earthing profiles. Tower Footing Resista... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 emissions, electric vehicles, low-carbon, PLEXOS, power system flexibility, solar plants, wind plants
One of the major tools for the implementation of low carbon strategy goals is increasing the penetration of renewable sources, which are mostly intermittent in nature, into the power system that also increases the needs for additional storage and flexibility capacity in the system. Among other possible solutions, one very most promising tool is the significant electrification of the transport sector. A slightly modified and already verified power system model used for Croatian low-carbon strategy was used here. The PLEXOS software was used to model the Croatian power system by simulating different scenarios. Two scenarios were examined: with and without electric vehicles. This research aimed to evaluate the total decrease in CO2 emissions from both the transport and power sectors due to the increased number of electrical vehicles. The analysis of the Croatian power system was used to assess the flexibility potential of such a large number of electrical vehicles on power system flexibil... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic dipole sources, analytical methods, differential equations, eddy currents, electromagnetic induction, energy fundamentals, energy transformation, magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction (MAT-MI), tomography
This paper is devoted to an analytical approach to the magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction (MAT-MI) problem for three-layer low-conductivity objects. For each layer, we determined closed-form analytical expressions for the eddy current density and Lorentz force vectors based on the separation of variables method. Next, the analytical formulas were validated with numerical solutions obtained with the help of the finite element method (FEM). Based on the acoustic dipole radiation theory, the influence of the transducer reception pattern on MAT-MI was investigated. To obtain acoustic wave patterns, as a system transfer function we proposed the Morlet wavelet. Finally, image reconstruction examples for objects of more complex shapes are presented, and the influence of the MAT-MI scanning resolution and the presence of the noise on the image reconstruction quality was studied in detail.
Towards Accurate Boundary Conditions for CFD Models of Synthetic Jets in Quiescent Flow
Andrea Matiz-Chicacausa, Omar D. Lopez Mejia
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, lumped element model, quiescent flow, synthetic jet
In this paper, an accurate model to simulate the dynamics of the flow of synthetic jets (SJ) in quiescent flow is proposed. Computational modeling is an effective approach to understand the physics involved in these devices, commonly used in active flow control for several reasons. For example, SJ actuators are small; hence, it is difficult to experimentally measure pressure changes within the cavity. Although computational modeling is an advantageous approach, experiments are still the main technique employed in the study of SJs due to the lack of accurate computational models. The same aspect that represents an advantage over other techniques also represents a challenge for the computational simulations, such as capturing the unsteady phenomena, localized compressible effects, and boundary layer formation characteristic of this complex flow. One of the main challenges in the simulation of SJs is related to the fact that the spatial and temporal scales of the actuator and the correspo... [more]
On the Potential of Reduced Order Models for Wind Farm Control: A Koopman Dynamic Mode Decomposition Approach
Nassir Cassamo, Jan-Willem van Wingerden
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial induction control, dynamic mode decomposition, Koopman operator theory, reduced order model, wind farm control
The high dimensions and governing non-linear dynamics in wind farm systems make the design of numerical optimal controllers computationally expensive. A possible pathway to circumvent this challenge lies in finding reduced order models which can accurately embed the existing non-linearities. The work presented here applies the ideas motivated by non-linear dynamical systems theory—the Koopman Operator—to an innovative algorithm in the context of wind farm systems—Input Output Dynamic Mode Decomposition (IODMD)—to improve on the ability to model the aerodynamic interaction between wind turbines in a wind farm and uncover insights into the existing dynamics. It is shown that a reduced order linear state space model can reproduce the downstream turbine generator power dynamics and reconstruct the upstream turbine wake. It is further shown that the fit can be improved by judiciously choosing the Koopman observables used in the IODMD algorithm without jeopardizing the models ability to rebu... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: full-order SMO, IPMSM, Luenberger-based observer, position sensorless, synchronous frequency tracking filter
In the research of the high-speed sensorless control strategy of an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), considering the harmonic influence of inverter nonlinearity on traditional sliding mode observer method, a full-order sliding mode observer (SMO) method based on synchronous frequency tracking filtering is proposed. This method avoids the phase delay defects caused by the use of filters in traditional second-order SMO. Then, the observed extended electromotive force (EMF) signal is filtered using a synchronous frequency tracking (SFT) function. It tracks the changing stator current and filters out harmonics that are not part of the tracking signal to achieve static tracking of the stator current. Then, the rotor speed can be estimated by a Luenberger-based observer. Experimental results verify the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Keywords: CNN, LSTM, Microgrids, Neural Networks, PV power predictions
Due to the intermittent nature of solar energy, accurate photovoltaic power predictions are very important for energy integration into existing energy systems. The evolution of deep learning has also opened the possibility to apply neural network models to predict time series, achieving excellent results. In this paper, a five layer CNN-LSTM model is proposed for photovoltaic power predictions using real data from a location in Temixco, Morelos in Mexico. In the proposed hybrid model, the convolutional layer acts like a filter, extracting local features of the data; then the temporal features are extracted by the long short-term memory network. Finally, the performance of the hybrid model with five layers is compared with a single model (a single LSTM), a CNN-LSTM hybrid model with two layers and two well known popular benchmarks. The results also shows that the hybrid neural network model has better prediction effect than the two layer hybrid model, the single prediction model, the La... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: depleted oil reservoirs, HT-ATES, numerical modeling, potential analysis, seasonal energy storage, upper rhine graben
HT-ATES (high-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage) systems are a future option to shift large amounts of high-temperature excess heat from summer to winter using the deep underground. Among others, water-bearing reservoirs in former hydrocarbon formations show favorable storage conditions for HT-ATES locations. This study characterizes these reservoirs in the Upper Rhine Graben (URG) and quantifies their heat storage potential numerically. Assuming a doublet system with seasonal injection and production cycles, injection at 140 °C in a typical 70 °C reservoir leads to an annual storage capacity of up to 12 GWh and significant recovery efficiencies increasing up to 82% after ten years of operation. Our numerical modeling-based sensitivity analysis of operational conditions identifies the specific underground conditions as well as drilling configuration (horizontal/vertical) as the most influencing parameters. With about 90% of the investigated reservoirs in the URG transferable i... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: load frequency control, multi-area power system, second order sliding mode control
The implementation of the sliding mode control (SMC) for load frequency control of power networks becomes difficult due to the chattering phenomenon of high-frequency switching. This chattering problem in SMC is extremely dangerous for actuators used in power systems. In this paper, a continuous control strategy by combining a second-order mode and integral siding surface is proposed as a possible solution to this problem. The proposed second-order integral sliding mode control (SOISMC) law not only rejects chattering phenomenon in control input, but also guarantees the robustness of the multi-area power network, which has an effect on parametric uncertainties such as the load variations and the matched or mismatched parameter uncertainties. Moreover, the reporting of the simulation indicates that the proposed controller upholds the quality requirement by controlling with operating conditions in the larger range, rejects disturbance, reduces the transient response of frequency, elimina... Subject: Environment
Keywords: AC charging, charging infrastructure, DC charging, economic assessment, electric vehicle, life cycle assessment
We investigate the environmental impacts of on-board (based on alternating current, AC) and off-board (based on direct current, DC) charging concepts for electric vehicles using Life Cycle Assessment and considering a maximum charging power of 22 kW (AC) and 50 kW (DC). Our results show that the manufacturing of chargers provokes the highest contribution to environmental impacts of the production phase. Within the chargers, the filters could be identified as main polluters for all power levels. When comparing the results on a system level, the DC system causes less environmental impact than the AC system in all impact categories. In our diffusion scenarios for electric vehicles, annual emission reductions of up to 35 million kg CO2-eq. could be achieved when the DC system is used instead of the AC system. In addition to the environmental assessment, we examine economic effects. Here, we find annual savings of up to 8.5 million euros, when the DC system is used instead of the AC system.
