Efficiency of Pressurized Rock Traps for Unlined Hydropower Tunnels
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: desilting basins, hydropower, pressurized rock traps, sediment, tunnel
Pressurized rock traps are constructed in many hydropower plants to stop sand and gravel from being transported through the turbines. Pressurized rock traps are typically located in the downstream end of unlined headrace tunnels, where the tunnel itself may be one of the sediment sources. This state-of-the-art review presents an overview of research on pressurized rock traps from both publicly available sources and unpublished sources. Limited scientific literature exists on rock traps, and most of the existing literature has previously been unavailable for an international audience. Based on this review, it is concluded that pressurized rock traps should be built with the flow area and sediment deposition volume separated by plates or ribs. Without any separation measures, the sediments risk being re-entrained due to turbulence. This review is separated into three sections: (1) sediment problems and sources of sediments, (2) theory for pressurized rock traps, and (3) design of pressur... [more]

Optimal Selection of Asynchronous Motor-Gearhead Couple Fed by VFD for Electrified Vehicle Propulsion
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: AC motor, electrified vehicles, gearbox, optimal system design, variable frequency drive
Widespread applications of AC motors fed by variable frequency drives in electrified vehicles have become a conventional technical solution. The flexibility of control, low cost, and high energy efficiency attract developers and engineers to apply these appliances in cars, railway trains, trams, etc. The distinctive characteristic of vehicles is a wide range of required rotation speed and torque. This circumstance means that the problems of the AC motor (nominal power, synchronous speed) and gearbox (transmission ratio) become non-trivial and necessitate optimal selection to ensure the best functionality of the entire driving system. This study proposes an approach for the optimal choice of a specific AC motor (nominal rating, synchronous speed) and the transmission ratio of the gearbox by analyzing the entire system’s losses. The optimal selection of an AC motor ensures maximum energy efficiency for a specific transportation driving cycle.

eCooking: Challenges and Opportunities from a Consumer Behaviour Perspective
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: appliances, clean cooking, consumer behaviour, electric cooking, perceptions
New opportunities are opening for electric cooking (eCooking) as a cost-effective, practical and desirable solution to the twin global challenges of clean cooking and electrification. Globally, momentum is building behind the transformative potential of eCooking to achieve a range of environmental and social impacts. However, cooking is a complex, culturally embedded practice, that results in an array of behavioural change challenges that must be understood and overcome for these new opportunities to translate into impact at scale. The Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) programme was designed to explore this space and pilot innovative new eCooking services with the potential to rapidly scale. This paper reflects upon the programme’s key learnings to date on the behavioural change dimension of eCooking. It consolidates what we now know on the subject and highlights the gaps that remain, where further investigation is needed. The evidence shows that the uptake of eCooking can be hinde... [more]

Evaluating the Dynamic Energy Production Efficiency in APEC Economies
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: APEC, CO2 emissions, dynamic DEA, Energy Efficiency, GDP, translation adjustment
This study introduces the translation adjustment model of Seiford and Zhu (2002) into dynamic DEA models to measure and analyze the dynamic energy efficiency of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies from 2010 to 2014. The APEC economies are divided into annual energy and overall energy efficiency ratings, and improvement directions are proposed for the different variables. With the proposal of magnitude, this study discusses the changes in intertemporal conversion variables and proposes suggestions for improvement. Finally, this study analyzes the implications of energy investment and the efficiency policies of APEC economies. The results show that economies with the lowest overall energy efficiency ratings have great potential for improvement. Reducing capital stock, labor, fossil fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions while increasing GDP can increase energy efficiency ratings. However, economies do not want to reduce the state’s capital stock, and labor and population birt... [more]

Comparison of Energy Consumption of Cereal Grain Dryer Powered by LPG and Hard Coal in Polish Conditions
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: cereal drying, Energy Efficiency, gas emission, hard coal, LPG
The calculation method commonly used in the industry takes into consideration mainly fuel consumption (excluding electricity) and the amount of removed moisture which is reflected in the unit MJ·(Mg·%)−1. This is not a scientific approach because the result will change if the basic moisture is different (drying from 21% to 18% will consume less energy than drying from 18% to 15%). This paper aims to compare the energy consumption of two industrial continuous flow grain dryers powered by LPG and hard coal based on a comprehensive approach to energy efficiency calculation enriched with electricity consumption, flow measurements, and control of grain moisture. It could be useful for manufacturers who could use this method to generate more reliable data in their product datasheets, and it could also be legally regulated as an appropriate tool for calculating the energy consumption of agricultural grain dryers. According to the approach presented in this paper, the S428.CS construction powe... [more]

Optimization of Supercapacitor Assisted Surge Absorber (SCASA) Technique: A New Approach to Improve Surge Endurance Using Air-Gapped Ferrite Cores
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: air-gapped transformer, effective permeability, magnetic permeance, SCASA, supercapacitors, surge protection
SCASA is a patented technique commercialized as a surge protector device (SPD) that adheres to UL-1449 test standards. Apart from the novel use of supercapacitors, SCASA design incorporates a coupled-inductor wound to a specially selected magnetic material of powdered-iron. In this study, we investigate the limitations of the present design under transient operation and elucidate ways to eliminate them with the use of air-gapped ferrite cores. In modelling the operation under 50 Hz AC and transient conditions, a permeance-based approach is used; in addition, non-ideal characteristics of the transformer core are emphasized and discussed with empirical validations. The experimental work was facilitated using a lightning surge simulator coupled with the 230 V AC utility mains; combinational surge-waveforms (6 kV/3 kA) defined by IEEE C62.41 standards were continuously injected into SPD prototypes during destructive testing. Such procedures substantiate the overall surge-endurance capabili... [more]

Leadership Competencies in Making Industry 4.0 Effective: The Case of Polish Heat and Power Industry
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy production, fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA), heat and power plants, Industry 4.0, leadership effectiveness, managerial competencies
Leadership competencies are of crucial importance in every organisation as to a large extent they determine its success. This is especially evident in the time of Industry 4.0. Given this fact, the aim of our paper is to examine the relationship between leadership competencies and 4.0 leadership effectiveness. The heat and power plants industry was chosen as the subject of our research. The fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA) was used as the research method. It enabled us not only to analyse particular variables, competences, and typical statistical relations between them, but we also revealed the patterns of causal relationships between particular variables. The key finding of our research was the juxtaposition of leadership competencies that are indispensable for 4.0 leaders in the CHP plants. We also found out that managerial competencies were not sufficient, and they should be supported by intellectual or socio-emotional ones.

Using Machine Learning to Predict Retrofit Effects for a Commercial Building Portfolio
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: building energy retrofits, causal forest, data-driven energy analysis, energy savings evaluation, heterogeneous treatment effect
Buildings account for 40% of the energy consumption and 31% of the CO2 emissions in the United States. Energy retrofits of existing buildings provide an effective means to reduce building consumption and carbon footprints. A key step in retrofit planning is to predict the effect of various potential retrofits on energy consumption. Decision-makers currently look to simulation-based tools for detailed assessments of a large range of retrofit options. However, simulations often require detailed building characteristic inputs, high expertise, and extensive computational power, presenting challenges for considering portfolios of buildings or evaluating large-scale policy proposals. Data-driven methods offer an alternative approach to retrofit analysis that could be more easily applied to portfolio-wide retrofit plans. However, current applications focus heavily on evaluating past retrofits, providing little decision support for future retrofits. This paper uses data from a portfolio of 550... [more]

European and Indian Grid Codes for Utility Scale Hybrid Power Plants
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Danish grid code, European Commission Regulation, grid codes, hybrid power plants, Indian grid code, solar power, storage, wind power
The aim of this paper is to review and compare present European and Indian grid code requirements imposed to hybrid power plants (HPPs) combining wind, solar and storage technologies. Since there are no grid codes specifically for HPPs, the paper will review grid codes for the power plant based on individual renewable technology in the HPP. European grid codes specifies ranges for parameters inside which each national transmission system operators (TSO) has to specify the set of national parameters (Danish specifications in this paper). The comparisons are performed with respect to fault-ride-through capability, frequency and voltage operation ranges, active power control/frequency support as well as reactive power control/voltage support.

Subject: Other
Keywords: cause-and-effect relationships, green buildings, smart cities, smart sustainable buildings (SSB), society
The concept of a smart city is assumed to use resources more efficiently and in an innovative, creative, and intelligent manner. Initial experience with implementing this concept relates primarily to investments in technology and infrastructure using smart solutions, particularly technical urban infrastructure. An important social aspect of a smart city—people—cannot not go unnoticed. The inhabitants of a smart city are not only beneficiaries; they participate in its co-creation, initiate activities and are creative. This paper focuses on one of the smart city’s technical infrastructure components, which are intelligent sustainable buildings. This article aims to analyze the factors characterizing smart sustainable buildings (SSB) and the possibilities for their development. For this purpose, a SWOT matrix was developed. The factors of this matrix were subjected to a cause-effect analysis using the DEMATEL method to establish relationships between them. The results of the analysis allo... [more]

Permeability and Mineralogy of the Újfalu Formation, Hungary, from Production Tests and Experimental Rock Characterization: Implications for Geothermal Heat Projects
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: mercury intrusion porosimetry, numerical flow simulation, Pannonian Basin, permeability, sandstone, thin-section analysis, X-CT scanning, XRD analysis
Hundreds of geothermal wells have been drilled in Hungary to exploit Pannonian Basin sandstones for district heating, agriculture, and industrial heating projects. Most of these sites suffer from reinjection issues, limiting efficient use of this vast geothermal resource and imposing significant extra costs for the required frequent workovers and maintenance. To better understand the cause of this issue requires details of reservoir rock porosity, permeability, and mineralogy. However, publicly available data for the properties of reservoir rocks at geothermal project sites in Hungary is typically very limited, because these projects often omit or limit data acquisition. Many hydrocarbon wells in the same rocks are more extensively documented, but their core, log, or production data are typically decades old and unavailable in the public domain. Furthermore, because many Pannonian sandstone formations are poorly consolidated, coring was always limited and the collected core often unsui... [more]

Combustion Characteristics of 0.5 MW Class Oxy-Fuel FGR (Flue Gas Recirculation) Boiler for CO2 Capture
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: emission, heat flux, industrial boiler, oxy-fuel combustion
A 0.5 MW class oxy-fuel boiler was developed to capture CO2 from exhaust gas. We adopted natural gas as the fuel for industrial boilers and identified characteristics different from those of pulverized coal, which has been studied for power plants. We also examined oxy-fuel combustion without flue gas recirculation (FGR), which is not commonly adopted in power plant boilers. Oxy-fuel combustion involves a stretched flame that uniformly heats the combustion chamber. In oxy-natural-gas FGR combustion, water vapor was included in the recirculated gas and the flame was stabilized when the oxygen concentration of the oxidizer was 32% or more. While flame delay was observed at a partial load for oxy-natural-gas FGR combustion, it was not observed for other combustion modes. In oxy-fuel combustion, the flow rate and flame fullness decrease but, except for the upstream region, the temperature near the wall is distributed not lower than that for air combustion because of the effect of gas radia... MC-NILM: A Multi-Chain Disaggregation Method for NILM
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy disaggregation, Machine Learning, multi-chain disaggregation, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM)
Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) is an approach that helps residents obtain detailed information about household electricity consumption and has gradually become a research focus in recent years. Most of the existing algorithms on NILM build energy disaggregation models independently for an individual appliance while neglecting the relation among them. For this situation, this article proposes a multi-chain disaggregation method for NILM (MC-NILM). MC-NILM integrates the models generated by existing algorithms and considers the relation among these models to improve the performance of energy disaggregation. Given the high time complexity of searching for the optimal MC-NILM structure, this article proposes two methods to reduce the time complexity, the k-length chain method and the graph-based chain generation method. Finally, we use the Dataport and UK-DALE datasets to evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness, and generality of the MC-NILM.

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: conical draft tube airlift reactor, gas holdup, homogenization time, mass transfer
The gas−liquid hydrodynamics and mass transfer were studied in a concentric tube internal jet-loop airlift reactor with a conical bottom. Comparing with a standard design, the gas separator was equipped with an adjustable deflector placed above the riser. The effect of riser superficial gas velocity uSGR on the total gas holdup εGT, homogenization time tH, and overall volumetric liquid-phase mass transfer coefficient kLa was investigated in a laboratory bioreactor, of 300 mm in inner diameter, in a two-phase air−water system and three-phase air−water−PVC−particle system with the volumetric solid fraction of 1% for various deflector clearances. The airlift was operated in the range of riser superficial gas velocity from 0.011 to 0.045 m/s. For the gas−liquid system, when reducing the deflector clearance, the total gas holdup decreased, the homogenization time increased twice compared to the highest deflector clearance tested, and the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient slightly... Experimental Study of a Lab-Scale Organic Rankine Cycle System for Heat and Water Recovery from Flue Gas in Thermal Power Plants
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flue gas, organic rankine cycle, thermal efficiency, waste heat recovery, water condensation
Fossil fuel power plants can cause numerous environmental issues, owing to exhaust emissions and substantial water consumption. In a thermal power plant, heat and water recovery from flue gas can reduce CO2 emissions and water demand. High-humidity flue gas averts the diffusion of pollutants, enhances the secondary transformation of air pollutants, and leads to smog weather; hence, water recovery from flue gas can also help to lessen the incidence of white plumes and smog near and around the power plant. In this study, a lab-scale system for heat and water recovery from flue gas was tested. The flue gas was initially cooled by an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system to produce power. This gas was further cooled by an aftercooler, using the same working fluid to condense the water and condensable particulate matter in the flue gas. The ORC system can produce approximately 220 W of additional power from flue gas at 140 °C, with a thermal efficiency of 10%. By cooling the flue gas below 30−... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, confined array jets, heat transfer coefficient, jet impingement
The present study experimentally and numerically investigates the effect of channel height on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a channel impingement cooling configuration for various jet Reynolds numbers in the range of 2000−8600. A single array consisting of eleven jets with 0.8 mm diameter injects water into the channel with 2 mm width at four different channel heights (3, 4, 5, and 6 mm). The average heat transfer coefficients at the target surface are measured by maintaining a temperature difference between the jet exit and the target surface in the range of 15−17 °C for each channel height. The experimental results show the average heat transfer coefficient at the target surface increases with the jet Reynolds number and decreases with the channel height. An average Nusselt number correlation is developed based on 85 experimentally measured data points with a mean absolute error of less than 4.31%. Circuit Breaker Failure Protection Strategy for HVDC Grids
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: algorithm, circuit breaker failure, HVDC grid, protection
HVDC grids demand the fast and reliable operation of the protection system. The failure of any protection element should initialize a backup protection almost immediately in order to assure the system’s stability. This paper proposes a novel backup strategy that covers the failure of the primary protection including the malfunctioning of the HVDC circuit breaker. Only local voltage measurements are employed in the proposed backup protection and the voltage derivative is calculated at both sides of the limiting inductor. Consequently, the speed and reliability of the protection system are enhanced, since no communication channel is needed. This paper contains a thorough specification of the proposed protection strategy. This strategy is validated in a four-terminal HVDC grid with various fault case scenarios, including high-resistance fault cases. The operation of the backup protection is reliable and remarkably fast.

Model-Free Control of UCG Based on Continual Optimization of Operating Variables: An Experimental Study
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: calorific value, control algorithm, operating variables, optimal control, Optimization, Syngas, underground coal gasification (UCG)
The underground coal gasification (UCG) represents an effective coal mining technology, where coal is transformed into syngas underground. Extracted syngas is cleaned and processed for energy production. Various gasification agents can be injected into an underground georeactor, e.g., air, technical oxygen, or water steam, to ensure necessary temperature and produce syngas with the highest possible calorific value. This paper presents an experimental study where dynamic optimization of operating variables maximizes syngas calorific value during gasification. Several experiments performed on an ex situ reactor show that the optimization algorithm increased syngas calorific value. Three operation variables, i.e., airflow, oxygen flow, and syngas exhaust, were continually optimized by an algorithm of gradient method. By optimizing the manipulation variables, the calorific value of the syngas was increased by 5 MJ/m3, both in gasification with air and additional oxygen. Furthermore, a high... [more]

April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compression booster, ejector, hot climate, renewable cooling, solar air conditioning, space cooling
In year-round hot climatic conditions, conventional air conditioning systems consume significant amounts of electricity primarily generated by conventional power plants. A compression-assisted, multi-ejector space cooling system driven by low-grade solar thermal energy is investigated in terms of energy and exergy performance, using a real gas property-based ejector model for a 36 kW-scale air conditioning application, exposed to annually high outdoor temperatures (i.e., up to 42 °C), for four working fluids (R11, R141b, R245fa, R600a). Using R245fa, the multi-ejector system effectively triples the operating condenser temperature range of a single ejector system to cover the range of annual outdoor conditions, while compression boosting reduces the generator heat input requirement and improves the overall refrigeration coefficient of performance (COP) by factors of ~3−8 at medium- to high-bound condenser temperatures, relative to simple ejector cycles. Keywords: experiments, mathematical model, production string, reservoir drawdown, underground gas storage, wellhead chokes, withdrawal capacity, working gas volume
The storage of natural gas in geological structures such as depleted fields, aquifers and salt caverns plays an important role in a gas supply system as it balances the fluctuation of gas demand and price. Hydraulic loss due to fluid flow through gas storage production equipment and an interfering effect from nonequal productivity index of storage wells may have an important influence on gas storage performance. An integrated mathematical model is developed based on underground gas storage facility production data. Using this model, the hydraulic loss is determined. A real test case that consists of a gas storage reservoir linked to the surface facility is analysed. The mathematical model uses an experimentally determined pressure drop coefficient in chokes. The base case scenario created using real gas storage facility data enables the achievement of a good history match with the given parameters of the gas storage reservoir. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: converting, corrugated cardboard, crushing, finite element method, numerical homogenization, shell structures, strain energy equivalence, transverse shear
As long as non-contact digital printing remains an uncommon standard in the corrugated packaging industry, corrugated board crushing remains a real issue that affects the load capacity of boxes. Crushing mainly occurs during the converting of corrugated board (e.g., analog flexographic printing or laminating) and is a process that cannot be avoided. However, as this study shows, it can be controlled. In this work, extended laboratory tests were carried out on the crushing of double-walled corrugated board. The influence of fully controlled crushing (with a precision of ±10 μm) in the range from 10 to 70% on different laboratory measurements was checked. The typical mechanical tests—i.e., edge crush test, four-point bending test, shear stiffness test, torsional stiffness test, etc.—were performed on reference and crushed specimens. Keywords: biodiesel, emission, performance, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Ricinus Communis
Countries globally are focusing on alternative fuels to reduce the environmental pollution. An example is biodiesel fuel, which is leading the way to other technologies. In this research, the methyl esters of castor oil were prepared using a two-step transesterification process. The respective properties of the castor oil (Ricinus Communis) biodiesel were estimated using ASTM standards. The effect of performance and emission on diesel engines was noted for four various engine loads (25, 50, 75, and 100%), with two different blends (B5 and B20) and at two different engine speeds (1500 and 2000 rpm). The study determined that B5 and B20 samples at 1500 rpm engine speed obtained the same power, but diesel fuel generated greater control. The power increased at 2000 rpm for B5 samples, but B20 samples, as well as diesel, were almost the same values.
