The Effect of Mining Remnants on Elastic Strain Energy Arising in the Tremor-Inducing Layer
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analytical modelling, mining tremors, rock burst hazard, rock mechanics, underground coal mining
A vast majority of hard coal deposits in Poland have a multi-seam structure, hence the presence of mining remnants left from previous operations. The impact of those remnants (exploitation edges or residual pillars) can further intensify geomechanical phenomena occurring in the rock mass, leading to changes in the original state of stress. This applies to all layers within the rock strata, including thick and coherent ones (referred to as tremor-inducing layers) where the impacts of mining remnants are likely to trigger tremors, thus enhancing the rock bursts hazard. In the light of the geomechanical model of rock strata recalled in the study, it is assumed that homogeneous and isotropic elastic layers are found between the considered mining remnant (which is revealed as the stress distribution), and the rock medium modelled as a homogeneous and isotropic half-plane. Development of the state of stress in the bedded medium was brought down to the analysis of interacting elastic layers,... [more]

Sliding Mode Controller for Parameter-Variable Load Sharing in Islanded AC Microgrid
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: current control, distributed generation sources, hysteresis controller, improved sliding mode controller, islanded AC microgrid, voltage control
Controlling voltage, frequency, and current in an islanded microgrid is a challenging problem because the distributed generation sources, stochastic and intermittent in nature, are not connected to the main electricity network to provide stable and clean energy. Therefore, the design of a robust controller to control the output parameters of the islanded microgrid and suppress load variations and disturbances is essential. In this paper, a hysteresis controller is proposed and designed to control the output voltage of an islanded AC microgrid and an improved sliding mode controller (SMC) based on adaptive control principle is designed to control the current of the microgrid. The current controller consists of two parts: An adaptation part, which aims to eliminate disturbances and system uncertainties, and a second part, which aims to deal with the tracking problem of the system under parameter-varying topologies. The adaptation strategy has the advantage of solving the gain tuning prob... [more]

Linking Indoor Thermal Comfort with Climate, Energy, Housing, and Living Conditions: Portuguese Case in European Context
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: indoor thermal comfort, Mediterranean climates, residential buildings, thermal building policies
Even though the milder climate scenario and constant evolution of thermal building regulation are in light of European initiatives, in Portugal, there are few houses where occupants can remain all the time in perfectly comfortable temperature conditions without resorting to heating or cooling. According to the Long Term Strategy for the Renewal of Buildings (ELPRE), this results from the combination of several factors, namely, low energy use for air conditioning compared to energy needs and aged building stock with poor energy performance. In fact, around 70% of the dwellings currently certified have low energy efficiency (C or less). The purpose of this review article was to analyse and discuss the factors affecting indoor thermal comfort, the inability to keep the home adequately warm in winter and cool in summer, and the risk of poverty or social exclusion in the European context, namely in Portugal. It fills the gap in the literature researching and analysing the motivations for th... [more]

State Characterization of Lithium-Ion Battery Based on Ultrasonic Guided Wave Scanning
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Doppler vibration measurement, lithium-ion battery, multi-feature state characterization, ultrasonic guided wave
Accurate state characterization of batteries is conducive to ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of their work. In recent years, ultrasonic non-destructive testing technology has been gradually applied to battery state estimation. In this paper, research on the state characterization of lithium-ion batteries based on ultrasonic guided wave (UGW) scanning is carried out. The laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) and the X-Y stage are used to obtain the surface scanning UGW signal and the line scanning UGW signal of lithium-ion batteries under different states of charge and different aging degrees. The propagation law of UGWs in the battery is analyzed by surface scanning signals, then the energy spectrum of the signals is calculated, showing that the aging of the battery attenuates the transmission energy of UGWs. The “point” parameters are extracted from the scanning point signals. On this basis, the “line” parameters composed of line scanning multi-point signals are extracted. B... [more]

What Drives Petrol Price Dispersion across Australian Cities?
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Australia, clustering, regional markets, retail price, unleaded petrol
Petrol directly impacts the ability of and extent to which households can engage in day-to-day activities and ultimately directly influences the aggregate economic activity. Petrol price increases can lead to major economic disruption, especially among the most vulnerable, such as low-income families. In Australia, petrol prices differ substantially between metropolitan and regional areas, and regional drivers must pay more for purchasing petrol than those in capital cities. This research explored why retail petrol prices vary from one city to another within and between Australian regions. In this study, clustering methods and panel models will be used to identify factors that cause price differences. The findings revealed that a considerable part of the price differences arose from specific characteristics of cities that influence the demand and supply of petrol, thereby causing variations in price decisions. Petrol prices were substantially influenced by wholesale petrol prices, oil... [more]

Predicting the Optimal Performance of a Concentrated Solar Segmented Variable Leg Thermoelectric Generator Using Neural Networks
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural networks, finite element method, segmented variable area leg thermoelectrics, thermoelectric optimization
The production of high-performing thermoelectrics is limited by the high computational energy and time required by the current finite element method solvers that are used to analyze these devices. This paper introduces a new concentrating solar thermoelectric generator made of segmented materials that have non-uniform leg geometry to provide high efficiency. After this, the optimum performance of the device is obtained using the finite element method conducted using ANSYS software. Finally, to solve the high energy and time requirements of the conventional finite element method, the data generated by finite elements are used to train a regressive artificial neural network with 10 neurons in the hidden layer. Results are that the power and efficiency obtained from the optimized device design are 3× and 2× higher than the original unoptimized device design. Furthermore, the developed neural network has a high accuracy of 99.95% in learning the finite element data. Finally, the neural net... [more]

Three-Dimensional CFD Modeling on the Thermal Characteristics of Buried Oil Pipeline Involving the Heat Transfer of Wax Layer
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: buried oil pipeline, CFD simulation, effective thermal conductivity, temperature field, wax layer
It is common to have a wax layer on the inner wall of waxy crude oil pipeline. However, the study of the wax layer on the heat transfer of buried pipeline systems is inadequate due to its instability of composition and properties; it may lead to the inaccurate prediction of the pipeline temperature field. Based on the finite element simulation technology, a three-dimensional heat transfer model of buried crude oil pipeline involving wax layer was proposed and solved. The thermal effect of the wax layer on pipeline system was analyzed quantitatively. Numerical results show that the average deviation of soil temperature near the pipeline reach 1.42 K when there is a 4 mm wax layer. Among different thermal conductivity models of heterogeneous materials, the EMT model plays best in predicting the conductivity of a waxy layer. By setting different working conditions, the influence mechanisms of several thermal influencing factors are discussed. The results show that the thermal influence ra... [more]

Can China Meet Its 2030 Total Energy Consumption Target? Based on an RF-SSA-SVR-KDE Model
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy consumption, kernel density estimation, sparrow algorithm, support vector regression machine
In order to accurately predict China’s future total energy consumption, this article constructs a random forest (RF)−sparrow search algorithm (SSA)−support vector regression machine (SVR)−kernel density estimation (KDE) model to forecast China’s future energy consumption in 2022−2030. It is explored whether China can reach the relevant target in 2030. This article begins by using a random forest model to screen for influences to be used as the input set for the model. Then, the sparrow search algorithm is applied to optimize the SVR to overcome the drawback of difficult parameter setting of SVR. Finally, the model SSA-SVR is applied to forecast the future total energy consumption in China. Then, interval forecasting was performed using kernel density estimation, which enhanced the predictive significance of the model. By comparing the prediction results and error values with those of RF-PSO-SVR, RF-SVR and RF-BP, it is demonstrated that the combined model proposed in the paper is more... [more]

Influence of Negative Sequence Injection Strategies on Faulted Phase Selector Performance
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: asymmetrical faults, decoupled control structure, fault phase selector algorithm, HiL, injection strategies, negative sequence injection, photovoltaic generator and type-IV wind turbine
Renewable power is expected to increase drastically in the coming years due to the energy transition. A large part of the newly installed generators will be connected to the power system through inverters and electronic converters, whose behaviour differs from the generators connected synchronously to the network. One of the main differences is the current contribution during symmetrical and asymmetrical faults which can affect protection systems. New grid codes establish requirements for fast current injection, but the converter’s maximum current limitations during faults make it difficult to establish control strategies for such current contribution. This paper studies the performance of faulted phase selector algorithm of a commercial relay under the current contribution from renewables before unbalanced faults. Two positive and negative sequence current injection strategies in compliance with new Spanish grid code requirements are proposed and tested under fault conditions in HiL (... [more]

Blind Source Separation of Transformer Acoustic Signal Based on Sparse Component Analysis
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: BSS, noise suppression, SCA, SSP identification, transformer acoustic signal
In the acoustics-based power transformer fault diagnosis, a transformer acoustic signal collected by an acoustic sensor is generally mixed with a large number of interference signals. In order to separate transformer acoustic signals from mixed acoustic signals obtained by a small number of sensors, a blind source separation (BSS) method of transformer acoustic signal based on sparse component analysis (SCA) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the mixed acoustic signals are transformed from time domain to time−frequency (TF) domain, and single source points (SSPs) in the TF plane are extracted by identifying the phase angle differences of the TF points. Then, the mixing matrix is estimated by clustering SSPs with a density clustering algorithm. Finally, the transformer acoustic signal is separated from the mixed acoustic signals based on the compressed sensing theory. The results of the simulation and experiment show that the proposed method can separate the transformer acoustic signal... [more]

Feedback Control Strategy for Transient Stability Application
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Energy Storage, power system control, power system stability, transient analysis, wide area measurements
Power systems are subjected to a wide range of disturbances during daily operations. Severe disturbances, such as a loss of a large generator, a three-phase bolted fault on a generator bus, or a loss of a transmission line, can lead to the loss of synchronism of a generator or group of generators. The ability of a power system to maintain synchronism during the few seconds after being subjected to a severe disturbance is known as transient stability. Most of the modern methods of controlling transient stability involve special protection schemes or remedial action schemes. These special protection schemes sense predetermined system conditions and take corrective actions, such as generator tripping or generation re-dispatch, in real time to maintain transient stability. Another method is the use of a real-time feedback control system to modulate the output of an actuator in response to a signal. This paper provides a fundamental evaluation of the use of feedback control strategies to im... [more]

Strategies for the Adoption of Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage Systems: An Exploratory Study in Australia
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Australia, distributed energy resources, energy systems, exploratory study, Hydrogen, mixed methodology
A significant contribution to the reduction of carbon emissions will be enabled through the transition from a centralised fossil fuel system to a decentralised, renewable electricity system. However, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy, storage is required to provide a suitable response to dynamic loads and manage the excess generated electricity with utilisation during periods of low generation. This paper investigates the use of stationary hydrogen-based energy storage systems for microgrids and distributed energy resource systems. An exploratory study was conducted in Australia based on a mixed methodology. Ten Australian industry experts were interviewed to determine use cases for hydrogen-based energy storage systems’ requirements, barriers, methods, and recommendations. This study suggests that the current cost of the electrolyser, fuel cell, and storage medium, and the current low round-trip efficiency, are the main elements inhibiting hydrogen-based energy storag... Assessment of Turbulence Models over a Curved Hill Flow with Passive Scalar Transport
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: concave, convex, passive scalar, RANS, surface curvature, turbulence
An incoming canonical spatially developing turbulent boundary layer (SDTBL) over a 2-D curved hill is numerically investigated via the Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) equations plus two eddy-viscosity models: the K−ω SST (henceforth SST) and the Spalart−Allmaras (henceforth SA) turbulence models. A spatially evolving thermal boundary layer has also been included, assuming temperature as a passive scalar (Pr = 0.71) and a turbulent Prandtl number, Prt, of 0.90 for wall-normal turbulent heat flux modeling. The complex flow with a combined strong adverse/favorable streamline curvature-driven pressure gradient caused by concave/convex surface curvatures has been replicated from wind-tunnel experiments from the literature, and the measured velocity and pressure fields have been used for validation purposes (the thermal field was not experimentally measured). Furthermore, direct numerical simulation (DNS) databases from the literature were also employed for the incoming turbulent flow... [more]

Heat to Hydrogen by Reverse Electrodialysis—Using a Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics Model to Evaluate Hydrogen Production Concepts Utilising Waste Heat
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Hydrogen, ion-exchange membranes, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, reverse electrodialysis heat engine
The reverse electrodialysis heat engine (REDHE) is a promising salinity gradient energy technology, capable of producing hydrogen with an input of waste heat at temperatures below 100 °C. A salinity gradient drives water electrolysis in the reverse electrodialysis (RED) cell, and spent solutions are regenerated using waste heat in a precipitation or evaporation unit. This work presents a non-equilibrium thermodynamics model for the RED cell, and the hydrogen production is investigated for KCl/water solutions. The results show that the evaporation concept requires 40 times less waste heat and produces three times more hydrogen than the precipitation concept. With commercial evaporation technology, a system efficiency of 2% is obtained, with a hydrogen production rate of 0.38 gH2 m−2h−1 and a waste heat requirement of 1.7 kWh gH2−1. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: arm current and circulating current control, fuzzy logic control (FLC), hardware in the loop (HIL), modular multilevel converter (MMC), proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), sub-module (SM) capacitor voltage
The contribution of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) in integrating non-conventional energy sources into the grid is significant; the integration of fuel cells with distributed energy sources is especially prominent as they provide a constant voltage and current for constant load applications. Still, there is a high demand for a high-quality power conditioning unit since there is an occurrence of frequent power spikes. Further, the circulating current (CC) in phase legs is an inherent phenomenon of MMC that must be mitigated. Hence, this article proposed an MMC incorporating a fuzzy logic controller (FLC)-based technique to control the circulating currents. The fuzzy controller effectively reduced the harmonics of the CC in the dc-link system. In addition, phase-shifted carrier (PSC) modulation was employed for the MMC to improve the capacitor voltage balancing to maintain the constant input voltage. Moreover, a mathematical analysis of PSC modulation for MMC was performed to ide... [more]
