Repairing What Policy Is Missing Out on: A Constructive View on Prospects and Preconditions for Sustainable Biobased Economy Options to Mitigate and Adapt to Climate Change
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: adaptation, biobased economy, mitigation, Sustainability, synergies
Biomass use for energy and materials is, on the one hand, one of the key mitigation options to reach the 1.5 °C GMT target set in the Paris Agreement, as highlighted by the IPCC and many other key analyses. On the other hand, particularly in parts of the EU, a strong negative connotation has emerged in public debate and EC policy, with a particular emphasis on the (presumed) displacement effect in markets and land use. This is a remarkable contrast because the reasons to use sustainable biomass, on the one hand, and the possibilities and synergies for supplying sustainable biomass, on the other, are underpinned with strong evidence, also providing insights on how displacement issues can be avoided. Sustainable biomass supplies can contribute 20−30% of the future global and European energy supply, leading to reduced overall mitigation costs, including realizing the net CO2 removal from the atmosphere using BECCS concepts. This paper highlights which options, pathways and preconditions a... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, cross-sectional dependence, economic growth, financial development, renewable energy consumption
This research investigates the relationships among renewable energy consumption, economic growth, and financial development in five sub-Saharan African nations utilizing panel data from 2000 to 2020. Econometric methods are used to ascertain the existence or absence of cross-sectional dependence and the short-run and long-run connections between the following factors: Pesaran cross-sectional dependence (CD) and cross-sectionally augmented IPS (CIPS) unit root tests, pooled mean group (PMG), and dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) estimations. The presence of cross-sectional dependence is found and represented with the CIPS unit root test. No significant short-run relationship is found between the variables of the study, yet a significant long-run relationship is present among them. A positive relationship exists between CO2 emissions and financial development, while financial development and renewable energy consumption are found to have negative relationships with CO2 emissions. Research on Energy Structure Optimization and Carbon Emission Reduction Path in Beijing under the Dual Carbon Target
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon emission reduction, dual carbon target, path optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
In the context of China’s dual carbon target, Beijing, as the capital of China, should play an exemplary role in carbon emission reduction. On the premise of optimizing high-emission sectors such as coal and industry, Beijing is still a certain distance from the goal of carbon neutrality. Therefore, on the basis of Beijing’s energy resource endowment, considering Beijing’s economic development and carbon neutrality goals and scientifically and reasonably planning Beijing’s carbon emission reduction path are important tasks. We construct an energy structure optimization model to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. The model analysis concludes that the residents and transportation sectors will account for a large proportion of Beijing’s total carbon emissions in the future. To achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, the electricity substitution of fossil energy and the high proportion of external power are two necessary measures, and the optimal path of carbon emission reductio... Estimation of Priming Mixture Force
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: force of priming mixtures, ignition, interior ballistics, primers
This paper presents the results of the estimation of the priming mixture force for primers used in 12.7 mm ammunition. The method of estimation is based on the results of pressure measurements in a closed chamber into which the products of the combustion of the priming mixture flowed. The capacity of the chamber was changed by inserting sleeves of various volumes. Another estimation of the force value was performed using the results of earlier investigations in which the chamber was filled with glass balls. The determined values of the force were compared with the values estimated based on the accessible literature data. The obtained estimations of the force value are of the same order of magnitude as the force value of black powder. This justifies the use of black powder characteristics for the assessment of the thermodynamic properties of priming mixture combustion products in interior ballistics calculations. The time of action of the investigated primer was determined using the opt... [more]

Ultra-Lean Premixed Turbulent Combustion: Challenges of RANS Modelling
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFM, Computational Fluid Dynamics, FAM, flamelet, premixed turbulent combustion, RANS, ultra-lean combustion
The main challenge of improving spark ignition (SI) engines to achieve ever increasing thermal efficiencies and near-zero pollutant emissions today concerns developing turbulent combustion under homogeneous ultra-lean premixed mixtures (HULP). This continuous shift of the lean operation limit entails questions on the applicability limits of the combustion models used to date for SI engine design and optimization. In this work, an assessment of flamelet-based models, widely used in RANS SI engines simulations of premixed turbulent combustion, is carried out using an open-source 3D-CFD platform to clarify the applicability limits on HULP mixtures. Two different consolidated approaches are selected: the Coherent Flame Model (CFM) and the Flame Area Model (FAM). Both methodologies are embedded by the authors into the same numerical structure and compared against measurements over a simplified and controlled flame configuration, which is representative of engine-like conditions. Recent Advances in Mechanochemical Pretreatment of Lignocellulosic Biomass
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acid treatment, alkaline treatment, ball milling, cellulose, depolymerization, extrusion, lignocellulose, mechanochemistry
Biorefineries are industrial facilities where biomass is converted into chemicals, fuels and energy. The use of lignocellulose as raw material implies the development of pretreatments to reduce its recalcitrant character prior to the processes that lead to the synthesis of the products of interest. These treatments are based on physico-chemical processes where it is necessary to use acids, bases, oxidants, and high pressure and temperature conditions that lead to the depolymerization of lignocellulose at the expense of generating a series of streams that must be treated later or to the production of by-products. In recent years, mechanochemistry is becoming relevant in the design of processes that help in the depolymerization of lignocellulose. These mechanochemical processes are being used in combination with chemicals and/or enzymes, allowing the use of minor loads of reagents or enzymes. In this review, the advances achieved in the use of mechanochemistry for treating lignocellulosi... [more]

Analytical and Numerical Analyses on Vertical Site Responses of Submarine Permafrost in Polar Ocean
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: analytical solution, COMSOL, dynamic response, energy geotechnics, frozen porous medium, resonance, submarine permafrost
Submarine permafrost is widely distributed in polar ocean, which has an important impact on polar engineering and subsea energy exploitation. According to the frozen porous medium theory, an analytical solution of the one-dimensional vertically dynamic response of the submarine permafrost is derived by using the Laplace transform and the separation variable method. Using the general forms of partial differential equations and the pressure acoustics module in COMSOL software, a finite element model of submarine permafrost overlying a seawater layer is established. The results show that the degraded solution agrees well with the existing results of the vertically dynamic response of the saturated soil layer in the seabed, and the analytical and numerical solutions are in good agreement. The water depth, saturation and temperature have important effects on the dynamic responses of submarine permafrost. When the soil layer is fully saturated, the water depth has a weak effect on resonance... [more]

Sizing of an Island Standalone Hybrid System Considering Economic and Environmental Parameters: A Case Study
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biogas, hybrid energy system, multicriteria decision analysis, off grid, rural electrification, solar mini-grid
Due to the significance of environmental aspects, the modeling of hybrid systems should be performed with the lowest cost and environmental pollution. Therefore, an effective and optimum sizing method can ensure acceptable performance. This paper implements a “technique for order performance by similarity to the ideal solution” (TOPSIS) method combined with the “analytic hierarchy process (AHP)” method to size a standalone system based on techno-economic parameters. For this reason, a survey was conducted to collect local load data on Monpura Island, located in Bhola, Bangladesh. Visible and design faults of the existing PV/diesel mini-grid have also been identified. Five alternative hybrid configurations have been considered as to evaluate the best optimum system. Two economic and one environmental criterion was used to size the system. Two experts specialized in energy systems evaluated the criteria and proposed the suitable system. March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3L-NPC H-bridge, analytical modelling, dead-time, voltage harmonic
The advantages of three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) H-bridge inverters, such as simple topological structure, low device voltage stress, high equivalent switching frequency, and highly expansible capacity, have made them the preferred choice for inverters matching with medium voltage high-capacity multi-phase open-end winding vessel propulsion motors. To quantitatively evaluate the propulsion motors’ harmonics, electromagnetic vibration, and noise caused by pulse-width modulation (PWM) and device dead-time, it is necessary to research the mathematical modeling of pulse-width modulated output voltage harmonics in consideration of dead-time. In this paper, the principle of the phase-disposition PWM method of the 3L-NPC H-bridge inverters was firstly introduced. Then, the analytical models of output voltage harmonics with and without considering the effect of dead-time were established based on the double Fourier series approach and the harmonic distribution of the dead-time effect... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alcohol waste, biogas, biohydrogen, biomethane, spent coffee grounds
In this study, alternative uses for lignocellulosic waste by considering them a source of eco-friendly and renewable energy generation with the application of the anaerobic digestion of treated and untreated waste for biogas and biohydrogen generation were investigated. The diluted sulfuric acid method was used for both the substrates and inoculum. Hydrogen production was absent when untreated spent coffee grounds (SCG) and alcohol waste (AW) were both used with the inoculum at pH 5.5 and pH 7.5. Meanwhile, the highest biogas yield of 320 dm3 kg V.S−1 was obtained when using AW at pH 7.5, with a 190 dm3 kg V.S−1 yield of methane. Instead, hydrogen production was observed when initially 4% (w/v) and 6% (w/v) SCG-containing hydrolysates were used as the substrates at pH 5.5, yielding 2.9 ± 0.09 dm3 kg V.S−1 and 3.85 ± 0.12 dm3 kg V.S−1, respectively. The further optimization of pretreatment technologies and pH control could lead to increased and prolonged hydrogen production.

Control and Design of a Boost-Based Electrolytic Capacitor-Less Single-Phase-Input Drive
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adjustable-speed drive, boost converter, capacitor-less drive, power factor correction, single-phase inverter, synchronous motor drives
Adjustable-speed drives with single-phase input require a power factor correction front-end, usually implemented by a boost converter, to reduce the current distortion from the uncontrolled rectifier; this stage is then followed by a three-phase inverter. Bulky electrolytic capacitors are used to limit the direct current voltage ripple resulting from the rectification of the single-phase input. This leads to increased system size and shorter lifetime. In this work, the usual boost front-end is exploited to actively control the DC link voltage ripple while limiting the input current distortion and, hence, the power factor, even if not reaching unity. However, Power Factor is greatly improved with respect to the uncontrolled rectifier alone. This approach permits one to reduce the required capacitance, allowing the substitution of the electrolytic capacitor with a long-life low-equivalent-series-resistance film one. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, CCS hub Dunkirk, CO2 conditioning, CO2 liquefaction, DMXTM process
In this work, CO2 conditioning processes for ship-based CCS sequestration are modelled using the software APSEN HYSYS V11. This study uses the captured CO2 gas from the 3D project as the feed. The feed stream contains water, H2S, and CO as contaminants. The purification processes for dehydration, desulfurization, and CO removal are reviewed. Two liquefaction approaches, the open-cycle and the closed-cycle liquefaction, are modelled and compared for transport pressures 7 and 15 bar. It is found that the energy requirement of the open-cycle process is higher than that of the closed-cycle liquefaction process. For the closed-cycle design, two refrigerants, ammonia and propane, are considered. Results show that the energy requirement of the process using ammonia is lower than that of propane. When comparing the two transport pressures, it is found that liquefaction at 15 bar requires less energy than 7 bar. On top of that, both refrigerants are unsuited for the liquefaction of CO2 at 7 bar... [more]
