Development of Four-Channel Buck-Type LED Driver with Automatic Current Sharing
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: capacitor, current sharing, differential-mode transformer, FPGA, LED driver, multiple outputs, single input
A buck-type light-emitting diode (LED) driver is proposed herein. The proposed LED driver automatically possesses current sharing and high step-down voltage gain. Without complex control, the proposed LED driver, with a single input and multiple outputs, can achieve automatic current sharing of four-channel LED strings, even under the different number of LEDs of each LED string. Furthermore, as compared with the traditional four-phase interleaved buck converter with a single input and a single output having current sharing required, the proposed circuit has the duty cycle up to 0.5, not 0.25, meaning that under the same input voltage the latter has a wider output voltage range than that of the former. Above all, if the proposed circuit with N outputs, then it still has the duty cycle up to 0.5, not one over N as shown traditionally. Moreover, as compared with the current sharing based on the differential-mode transformer, the proposed circuit has no magnetic resetting loop required. In... [more]

Elastic Reverse-Time Migration with Complex Topography
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: finite difference, multi-wave and multicomponent, reverse-time migration, surface topography, topography-related filter
Migration is an important step in seismic data processing for oil and gas exploration. The accuracy of migration directly affects the accuracy of subsequent oil and gas reservoir characterization. Reverse-time migration is one of the most accurate migration methods at present. Multi-wave and multicomponent seismic data contain more P- and S-wave information. Making full use of multi-wave and multicomponent seismic data can offer more information about underground structure and lithology, as well as improve the accuracy of seismic exploration. Elastic reverse-time migration (ERTM) has no dip restriction and can be applied to image multi-wave and multicomponent seismic data in complex structural areas and some special lithology structures. However, the surface topography of complex regions has an influence on wavefield and seriously degrades the quality of ERTM’s migration results. We developed a new ERTM method to migrate multi-wave and multicomponent seismic data in the region with com... [more]

Numerical Optimization of the β-Type Stirling Engine Performance Using the Variable-Step Simplified Conjugate Gradient Method
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 100-W-class β-type Stirling engine, CFD model, modified thermodynamic model, Optimization, VSCGM
This study focuses on optimizing a 100-W-class β-Type Stirling engine by combining the modified thermodynamic model and the variable-step simplified conjugate gradient (VSCGM) method. For the modified thermodynamic model, non-uniform pressure is directly introduced into the energy equation, so the indicated power and heat transfer rates can reach energy balance while the VSCGM is an updated version of the simplified conjugate gradient method (SCGM) with adaptive increments and step lengths to the optimization process; thus, it requires fewer iterations to reach the optimal solution than the SCGM. For the baseline case, the indicated power progressively raises from 88.2 to 210.2 W and the thermal efficiency increases from 34.8 to 46.4% before and after optimization, respectively. The study shows the VSCGM possesses robust property. All optimal results from the VSCGM are well-matched with those of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: critical infrastructure, cybersecurity, energy sector, policy and decision making
Due to the strategic nature of the energy sector, legal solutions to protect cross-border electricity and gas connections will be of particular importance. The author realizes that at the present stage of development, the cross-border impact may also be manifested by generating units (e.g., wind farms) or even end users themselves. The lack of harmonized regulations in this area may not only lead to limitations in the physical supply of electricity and gas, but also affect future investment decisions regarding, for example, new generation capacities. In a broader aspect, it will delay, and in the extreme case prevent, the achievement of the objectives resulting from the EU energy policy, in particular integration within the single energy market. In this article, the author identifies devices and entities responsible for energy infrastructure that should be classified as necessary for the functioning of the single energy market. Predicting Electric Vehicle Charging Station Availability Using Ensemble Machine Learning
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charging infrastructure, electric vehicles, ensemble learning, Machine Learning, road transport
Electric vehicles may reduce greenhouse gas emissions from individual mobility. Due to the long charging times, accurate planning is necessary, for which the availability of charging infrastructure must be known. In this paper, we show how the occupation status of charging infrastructure can be predicted for the next day using machine learning models— Gradient Boosting Classifier and Random Forest Classifier. Since both are ensemble models, binary training data (occupied vs. available) can be used to provide a certainty measure for predictions. The prediction may be used to adapt prices in a high-load scenario, predict grid stress, or forecast available power for smart or bidirectional charging. The models were chosen based on an evaluation of 13 different, typically used machine learning models. We show that it is necessary to know past charging station usage in order to predict future usage. Other features such as traffic density or weather have a limited effect. We show that a Gradi... Applications of Haar Wavelet-Finite Difference Hybrid Method and Its Convergence for Hyperbolic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with Energy and Mass Conversion
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: collocation method, conservative scheme, Haar wavelet, Schrödinger equation
This article is concerned with the numerical solution of nonlinear hyperbolic Schro¨dinger equations (NHSEs) via an efficient Haar wavelet collocation method (HWCM). The time derivative is approximated in the governing equations by the central difference scheme, while the space derivatives are replaced by finite Haar series, which transform it to full algebraic form. The experimental rate of convergence follows the theoretical statements of convergence and the conservation laws of energy and mass are also presented, which strengthens the proposed method to be convergent and conservative. The Haar wavelets based on numerical results for solitary wave shape of |φ| are discussed in detail. The proposed approach provides a fast convergent approximation to the NHSEs. The reliability and efficiency of the method are illustrated by computing the maximum error norm and the experimental rate of convergence for different problems. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Eyring-Powell fluid, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), perturbation technique, porous channel, temperature dependent viscosity
In this research, we studied the impact of temperature dependent viscosity and thermal radiation on Eyring Powell fluid with porous channels. The dimensionless equations were solved using the perturbation technique using the Weissenberg number (ε ≪ 1) to obtain clear formulas for the velocity field. All of the solutions for the physical parameters of the Reynolds number (Re), magnetic parameter (M), Darcy parameter (Da) and Prandtl number (Pr) were discussed through their different values. As shown in the plots the two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphical results of the velocity profile against various pertinent parameters have been illustrated with physical reasons. The results revealed that the temperature distribution increases for higher Prandtl and thermal radiation values. Such findings are beneficial in the field of engineering sciences.

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: coordinated control, economic optimization model, ES, FM, peak modulation
Energy storage (ES) only contributes to a single-scene (peak or frequency modulation (FM)) control of the power grid, resulting in low utilization rate and high economic cost. Herein, a coordinated control method of peak modulation and FM based on the state of ES under different time scales is proposed. Firstly, for monotone peak and FM control scenarios, the ES configuration and scheduling model is constructed with the goal of maximizing net profit. Secondly, to further improve the ES utilization rate and optimize the operating cost of ES, a cooperative control method of peak modulation and FM is proposed. This method can realize the switch between peak modulation and FM control of ES and improve the ES utilization rate and system economy. Finally, the simulation results show that, compared with that of mono-peak and single-FM control, the ES efficiency of the peak-FM multiscenario optimization scheduling method is improved by 16.25% and 37.29%, respectively. Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon dioxide storage, CO2 storage, geological storage, storage in aquifers
An analysis of the influence of injection well location on CO2 storage efficiency was carried out for three well-known geological structures (traps) in deep aquifers of the Lower Jurassic Polish Lowlands. Geological models of the structures were used to simulate CO2 injection at fifty different injection well locations. A computer simulation showed that the dynamic CO2 storage capacity varies depending on the injection well location. It was found that the CO2 storage efficiency for structures with good reservoir properties increases with increasing distance of the injection well from the top of the structure and with increasing depth difference to the top of the structure. The opposite is true for a structure with poor reservoir properties. As the quality of the petrophysical reservoir parameters (porosity and permeability) improves, the location of the injection well becomes more important when assessing the CO2 storage efficiency. Global economic growth, demographic explosion, digitization, increased mobility, and greater demand for heating and cooling due to climate change in different world areas are the main drivers for the surge in energy demand. The increase in energy demand is the basis of economic challenges for power companies alongside several socio-economic problems in communities, such as energy poverty, defined as the insufficient coverage of energy needs, especially in the residential sector. Two main strategies are considered to meet this increased demand. The first strategy focuses on new sustainable and eco-friendly modes of power generation, such as renewable energy resources and distributed energy resources. The second strategy is demand-side oriented rather than the supply side. Demand-side management, demand response (DR), and energy efficiency (EE) programs fall under this category. Subject: Other
Keywords: current error, distorted current, higher harmonics, inductive current transformer, secondary winding, turn ratio correction, window type CT
This paper presents the method for evaluation of the turns ratio correction of the inductive current transformer using the magnetization curves determined at the non-load state and in the load conditions. The presented method may be applied to determine even a fractional winding correction factor. The standard IEC 61869-2 provides the method to determine the turns ratio correction of the tested CT from the measured rms values of voltages on its primary and secondary winding in the non-load state. However, this approach is limited in determining the significant changes in the number of turns of the secondary winding. Moreover, the paper presents the influence of the applied turns ratio correction on the frequency characteristics of the current error and phase displacement of the inductive current transformers evaluated for the transformation of the distorted current.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bearing capacity, bi-directional static load test, finite element method
Due to the development of dedicated software and the computing capabilities of modern computers, the application of numerical methods to analyse more complex geotechnical problems is becoming increasingly common. However, there are still some areas which, due to the lack of unambiguous solutions, require a more thorough examination, e.g., the numerical simulations of displacement pile behaviour in soil. Difficulties in obtaining the convergence of simulations with the results of static load tests are mainly caused by problems with proper modelling of the pile installation process. Based on the numerical models developed so far, a new process of static load test modelling has been proposed, which includes the influence of pile installation on the soil in its vicinity and modelling of contact between steel pile and the soil. Although the presented method is not new, this is relevant and important for practitioners that may want to improve the design of displacement piles. The results of... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: catalyst regeneration, fly ash, NH3 slip, selective catalytic reduction, selective non-catalytic reduction, stoker boiler
The application of secondary NOx control methods in medium to low-capacity furnaces is a relatively new topic on the energy market and thus requires further research. In this paper, the results of full-scale research of SNCR and hybrid SNCR + SCR methods applied into a 29 MWth solid fuel fired stoker boiler is presented. The tests were performed for a full range of boiler loads, from 33% (12 MWth) to 103% (30 MWth) of nominal load. A novel SNCR + SCR hybrid process was demonstrated based on an enhanced in-furnace SNCR installation coupled with TiO2-WO3-V2O5 catalyst, which provides extra NOx reduction and works as an excess NH3 “catcher” as well. The performance of a brand-new catalyst was evaluated in comparison to a recovered one. The emission of NOx was reduced below 180 mg NOx/Nm3 at 6% O2, with ammonia slip in flue gas below 10 mg/Nm3. Special attention was paid to the analysis of ammonia slip in combustion products: flue gas and fly ash. An innovative and cost-effective method of... [more]
