Isolated Areas Consumption Short-Term Forecasting Method
Guillaume Guerard, Hugo Pousseur, Ihab Taleb
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Hidden Markov Model, short-term forecast, time series
Forecasting consumption in isolated areas represents a challenging problem typically resolved using deep learning or huge mathematical models with various dimensions. Those models require expertise in metering and algorithms and the equipment needs to be frequently maintained. In the context of the MAESHA H2020 project, most of the consumers and producers are isolated. Forecasting becomes more difficult due to the lack of external data and the significant impact of human behaviors on those small systems. The proposed approach is based on data sequencing, sequential mining, and pattern mining to infer the results into a Hidden Markov Model. It only needs the consumption and production curve as a time series and adapts itself to provide the forecast. Our method gives a better forecast than other prediction machines and deep-learning methods used in literature review.
Experimental Investigation on the Performance and Emission Characteristics of a Compression Ignition Engine Using Waste-Based Tire Pyrolysis Fuel and Diesel Fuel Blends
István Péter Kondor, Máté Zöldy, Dénes Mihály
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diesel engine, emissions, tire pyrolysis oil, waste based fuel
Due to the world’s growing population, the size of areas intended for food production in many countries of the world can only be achieved through severe environmental damage and deforestation, which has many other detrimental consequences in addition to accelerating global warming. By replacing the bio-content of fuels with other alternative fuels, land that is used for energy crops can also be used to grow food, thus mitigating the damaging effects of deforestation. Waste-based tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) can be a promising solution to replace the bio-proportion of diesel fuel. Since it is made from waste tires, it is also an optimal solution for recycling waste. This research shows the effect of different low-volume-percent tire pyrolyzed oil blended with diesel on the performance, fuel consumption, and emissions on a Mitsubishi S4S-DT industrial diesel engine. Four different premixed ratios of TPO were investigated (2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%) as well as pyrolysis oil and 100% diesel oil;... [more]
A Unified Controller for Multi-State Operation of the Bi-Directional Buck−Boost DC-DC Converter

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bidirectional DC-DC converter, DC microgrids, energy storage systems, feedback linearization, multi-variable control
DC grid interfaces for supercapacitors (SCs) are expected to operate with a wide range of input voltages with fast dynamics. The class-C DC-DC converter is commonly used in this application because of its simplicity. However, it does not work if the output voltage (V2) becomes smaller than the input voltage (V1). The non-isolated bi-directional Buck−Boost DC-DC converter does not have this limitation. Its two half-bridges provide a means for controlling the power flow operating in the conventional dual-state mode, as well as multi-state, tri, and quad modes. These can be used for mitigating issues such as the Right Half Plane (RHP) zero that has a negative impact on the dynamic response of the system. Multi-state operation typically requires multi-variable control, which is not easy to realize with conventional PI-type controllers. This paper proposes a unified controller for multi-state operation. It employs a carrier-based modulation scheme with three modulation signals that allows t... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling, heat transfer, NOVEC, pool boiling, system stability, temperatures evolution, thermosyphon, transient behavior
Currently, the growing need for efficient refrigeration resources in the industrial sector has led to an increasing interest in finding technologies with a higher heat removal potential and better cooling performance. Along these lines, two-phase liquid cooling appears to be a very interesting solution, with the CLTPT (closed-loop two-phase thermosyphon) being one of the leading alternatives. Most works in the scientific literature study loop thermosyphons that work in flow boiling conditions in steady state. The present paper analyzes the transient thermal behavior of a pool boiling CLTPT gravitational channel as a passive cooling system using NOVEC 649 as working fluid. The evaporator works with two submerged cylindrical heaters that represent different heat sources located in different positions. The initial transient behavior and consequent instabilities of a laboratory-scale facility were studied, followed by a stability analysis for various power inputs. Parameters such as temper... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ESG, green bonds, greenium, KPI, SLBs, spread, sustainability-linked bonds, sustainable finance, Tesco
Sustainability-Linked Bonds (SLBs) are a new type of general corporate purpose bond in which payments are tied to an issuer’s sustainability key performance indicators (KPIs) with respect to the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. The structure is complementary to green bonds. The Tesco SLBs are linked to the firm’s ability to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 60%. The priority is to reduce its reliance on nonrenewable grid electricity, which contributed 65% of Tesco’s global carbon emissions footprint. Tesco accounts for 1% of electricity demand in the UK. Failure to meet the goals will result in a coupon step-up by 25 basis points on the last three coupons. The aim of our study is to investigate the presence of, how we call it ‘ESG spread’, marked by negative yield difference between SLB and regular bonds. It is something similar to ‘greenium’, that is, a premium paid by bondholders for green bonds when compared to nongreen bonds. We compare the bid and ask yields... [more]
Estimation of Stress-Strength Reliability for Multicomponent System with Rayleigh Data
Liang Wang, Huizhong Lin, Kambiz Ahmadi, Yuhlong Lio
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymptotic theory, generalized pivotal estimation, likelihood estimation, multicomponent stress-strength model, rayleigh distribution
Inference is investigated for a multicomponent stress-strength reliability (MSR) under Type-II censoring when the latent failure times follow two-parameter Rayleigh distribution. With a context that the lifetimes of the strength and stress variables have common location parameters, maximum likelihood estimator of MSR along with the existence and uniqueness is established. The associated approximate confidence interval is provided via the asymptotic distribution theory and delta method. Meanwhile, alternative generalized pivotal quantities-based point and confidence interval estimators are also constructed for MSR. More generally, when the lifetimes of strength and stress variables follow Rayleigh distributions with unequal location parameters, likelihood and generalized pivotal-based estimators are provided for MSR as well. In addition, to compare the equivalence of different strength and stress parameters, a likelihood ratio test is provided. Finally, simulation studies and a real dat... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Big Data, China, light-duty vehicle, Machine Learning, real-world fuel consumption rate
Private vehicle travel is the most basic mode of transportation, so that an effective way to control the real-world fuel consumption rate of light-duty vehicles plays a vital role in promoting sustainable economic growth as well as achieving a green low-carbon society. Therefore, the factors impacting individual carbon emissions must be elucidated. This study builds five different models to estimate the real-world fuel consumption rate of light-duty vehicles in China. The results reveal that the light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) model performs better than the linear regression, naïve Bayes regression, neural network regression, and decision tree regression models, with a mean absolute error of 0.911 L/100 km, a mean absolute percentage error of 10.4%, a mean square error of 1.536, and an R-squared (R2) value of 0.642. This study also assesses a large pool of potential factors affecting real-world fuel consumption, from which the three most important factors are extracted, name... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: different coalfields in Shaanxi Province, hydrothermal influence, minerals in coals, sea transgression and regression, sediment provenance, subsidence rate
Shaanxi is among the provinces with abundant coal resources in North China. These enormous coal resources (approx. 4143 Gt) are widely distributed in the Ordos Basin and its marginal fold belts. The main coal-bearing strata consist of the late Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation, the early Permain Shanxi Formation, the late Triassic Wayaobao Formation, and the middle Jurassic Yan’an Formation, which were respectively deposited in coastal plains and a lagoon environment, a continental environment, an inland open lake and a confined lake environment. The Permo-Carboniferous coals are low volatile bituminous and characterized by relatively high vitrinite content, which decreases from south to north, and from the lower coal seams upwards. By contrast, the late Triassic and middle Jurassic coals are highly volatile bituminous, but are respectively characterized by relatively high vitrinite and high inertinite content. Minerals in the Permo-Carboniferous coals, the late Triassic coals, and the m... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: insulation oil, pressure, sealing condition, temperature, transformer bushing
Power transformer bushings withstand great electrical and mechanical stress during high voltage and high current working conditions. Sealing failure poses a great threat to the long-term and reliable operation of the bushing and power transformer; however, the criterion to evaluate the sealing status of a bushing caused by mechanical problems is still lacking. In this paper, a transformer bushing model is established to gain theoretical insight into the relationship between temperature and pressure of a compact multilayer bushing. To evaluate the bushing mechanical status, different sealing conditions are tested based on the temperature and pressure monitoring within the physical 110 kV bushing. The results show that mechanical sealing failure can be diagnosed when the fluctuation of the oil pressure value exceeds the theoretical curve in steady state by 3 kPa. With different reliability coefficients, gas leakage and oil leakage are available to be further determined. The primary and a... [more]

Lin Wang, Anke Xue
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: broad learning system (BLS), equivalent model of grid-connected DC microgrid, Optimization, shark smell optimization (SSO)
The DC microgrid is an important structure of microgrids. Aiming at the problem of the grid-connected DC microgrid modeling, a grid-connected DC microgrid equivalent modeling method based on the optimized Broad Learning System (BLS) is proposed. Taking the electrical parameter data of the grid-connected DC microgrid access point as the training data set of BLS, the equivalent model of the grid-connected equivalent model is constructed. In order to further improve the accuracy and generalization performance of the model, the shark smell optimization (SSO) algorithm is used to optimize the input weights and thresholds of the BLS. Furthermore, the shark smell optimization-Broad Learning System (SSO-BLS) algorithm is proposed. SSO-BLS is compared with RBF, BLS, BFO-ELM, and other algorithms. The results show that the grid-connected DC microgrid model based on SSO-BLS has good accuracy and generalization characteristics.

Keven Alan Robertson, Burton C. English, Christopher D. Clark, Jada M. Thompson, Kimberly L. Jensen, Robert Jamey Menard, Nicole Labbé
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ash content, biorefinery, farmer, optimal nitrogen, switchgrass
This study analyzes the effects of N fertilizer application rates on profitability of growing switchgrass and using the feedstock in a pyrolysis biorefinery facility to create a source of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply in Tennessee. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a perennial bunchgrass native to North America with traits suitable for biofuel and co-product production. Previous chemical analysis has shown that ash content in switchgrass is related to the amount of nitrogen applied to the field, while at the biorefinery level, the percentage ash content reduces the biorefinery fuel output. To obtain optimal nitrogen (N) application rates for the switchgrass producers and the biorefinery, a two-part analysis is employed. First, a partial budgeting profitability analysis is conducted for this cropping enterprise at the farm-gate level without considering downstream implications of biomass quality, i.e., ash content. Second, the effects of higher ash content as a percentage of... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumer attitudes, energy security, Internet of Things, smart grids, smart homes
This paper focuses on the consumer preferences for the so-called “smart homes” (also known as “smart houses”) which represent a novel addition and a product of the on-going digitalization and the deployment of the Internet of Things (IoT). The major scientific contribution of our study is the empirical model build on the data from the online questionnaire conducted with randomly selected respondents (N = 523) from four European Union (EU) countries and Russia. Even though our results are subject to limitations (no Southern of Northern European countries are included in the scope of this research, which might have yielded different results due to the differences in wealth of citizens and climate in comparison to the Central and Eastern European countries or Germany), they demonstrate that the users included in our sample generally feel inclined to the smart homes technologies and perceive them as a plausible means for improving the safety and security of their lives. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy-management systems, centralized building optimization and control, domestic automation, energy-sustainable buildings, HVAC control, IoT
The existing literature on energy saving focuses on large-scale buildings, wherein the energy-saving potential is substantially larger than smaller-scale buildings. However, the research intensity is significantly less for small-scale deployments and their capacities to regulate energy use individually, directly and without depreciating users’ comfort and needs. The current research effort focused on energy saving and user satisfaction, concerning a low-cost—yet technically sophisticated—methodology for controlling conventional residential HVAC units through cheap yet reliable actuation and sensing and auxiliary IoT equipment. The basic ingredients of the proposed experimental methodology involve a conventional A/C unit, an Arduino microcontroller, typical wireless IoT sensors and actuators, a configured graphical environment and a sophisticated, model-free, optimization-and-control algorithm (PCAO) that portrays the ground basis for achieving improved performance results in comparison... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, household energy consumption, rebound effect, renewable generation
Reducing household energy consumption is one of the most important strategies used to decrease fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gases emissions, and to encourage renewable energy utilization. Most energy conservation strategies in the domestic sector are aimed at preferential loans, i.e., purchasing renewable electricity or to improve the efficiency of home appliances, such as air conditioning and lighting. However, despite the relative economic successes of these technologies, they have not had expected impacts in regard to energy consumption. In this work, the authors analyzed the consumption patterns of two equivalent households—one was adapted with improved thermal insulation and a 1.2 kW photovoltaic system to reduce consumption from the electrical grid. The results show that dwellings where no improvements were made registered lower electric energy consumption, due the fact that users were aware that no strategy had been implemented, and its consumption; hence, electricity... Shuai Li, Yan Liu, Mohammad Omidi, Chuang Zhang, Hongkun Li
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: centrifugal compressor stage, modal decomposition, positive pre-swirl, unstable flow, variable inlet guide vanes
This study numerically investigates the beneficial effects of positive pre-swirl on the aerodynamic performance and internal flow field in a centrifugal compressor stage with variable inlet guide vanes (VIGVs) at low mass flow rates. Four positions of VIGV are considered, including 0°, 30°, 45°, and 60° angle. The latter three positions of VIGV induce positive pre-swirl. Numerical results show that as positive pre-swirl increases, the aerodynamic performance curve of the stage moves in the low mass flow rate direction. In the three cases of positive pre-swirl, there was an improvement of approximately 9.95% of stall/surge margin greater than in conditions with no pre-swirl. The regulation of IGV can effectively improve the unstable flow of the compressor stage at low mass flow rates. A low frequency that has a great influence on the internal flow of the compressor stage is found, and the unstable flow caused by low frequency is analyzed by the combination of streamline distribution, sp... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automobile aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, front wing, wing car body interactions
In time attack races, aerodynamics plays a vital role in achieving short track times. These races are characterized by frequent braking and acceleration supported by aerodynamic downforce. Usually, typical cars are modified for these races by amateurs. Adjusting the aerodynamic solutions to work with bodies developed for other flow conditions is difficult. This paper presents the results of a numerical analysis of the effects of installing a straight wing in front of or above the body on the modified vehicle system’s aerodynamic characteristics, particularly on the front wheels’ aerodynamic downforce values. The paper presents the methodology and results of calculations of the aerodynamic characteristics of a car with an additional wing placed in various positions in relation to the body. The numerical results are presented (Cd, Cl, Cm, Clf, Clr), as well as exemplary pressure distributions, pathlines, and visualizations of vortex structures. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: behavioral modeling, direct current (dc) nanogrid, distributed energy systems, power electronic converters, renewable energy sources, system identification
The remarkable progress of power electronic converters (PEC) technology has led to their increased penetration in distributed energy systems (DES). Particularly, the direct current (dc) nanogrid-based DES embody a variety of sources and loads, connected through a central dc bus. Therefore, PECs are required to be employed as an interface. It would facilitate incorporation of the renewable energy sources and battery storage system into dc nanogrids. However, it is more challenging as the integration of multiple modules may cause instabilities in the overall system dynamics. Future dc nanogrids are envisioned to deploy ready-to-use commercial PEC, for which designers have no insight into their dynamic behavior. Furthermore, the high variability of the operating conditions constitute a new paradigm in dc nanogrids. It exacerbates the dynamic analysis using traditional techniques. Therefore, the current work proposes behavioral modeling to perform system level analysis of a dc nanogrid-bas... [more]
Investments in Renewable Energy Sources in the Concepts of Local Spatial Policy: The Case of Poland

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: investment efficiency, renewable energy sources, spatial policy, spatial policy tools
The paper aims to determine the role and formula of investments in renewable energy sources in Poland’s concepts of local spatial policies. It analyses 12,777 planning documents of local spatial policy (these are resolutions adopted by municipalities—in Poland there are two types of these instruments: studies of spatial development conditions and directions and local spatial development plans) in Poland enacted in 2005−2020. On this basis, local concepts were classified and related to the geographical and functional characteristics of municipalities. Poland is an interesting case study in this respect, providing a good reference point for broader international considerations. It was found that only 58.4% of Polish municipalities include renewable energy sources in their spatial policy concept. These are definitely more often urbanised municipalities. The degree of approach to renewable energy sources is also determined by the location of the municipality in the given province. The auth... [more]
A Step-by-Step Design for Low-Pass Input Filter of the Single-Stage Converter
Qingqing He, Lei Liu, Mingyang Qiu, Quanming Luo
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC/AC, low-pass input filter, parameter design, single-stage converter
Active power factor correction converters are often introduced as the front stage of power electronic equipment to improve the power factor and eliminate higher harmonics. A Boost or Buck-Boost converter operating in discontinuous current mode is always adopted to achieve high power factor correction. In addition, the input current contains a large amount of higher harmonics, and a low-pass input filter is commonly adopted to filter it out. In this paper, a single-stage high-frequency AC/AC converter is taken as an example to demonstrate the design method of a passive low-pass filter. Firstly, the input side of the grid needs to meet the power factor and harmonic requirements. The preset parameters are set to a range to characterize the performance of the LC filter. The quantitative design method of input filter is proposed and summarized. Moreover, the sensitivity of the filter parameters is analyzed, providing a direction in practical applications. Preset parameters are all proved to... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregator, demand-side management, Latvia, system dynamic modelling, variable renewable energy sources
Power demand-side management has been identified as one of the possible elements towards a more flexible power system in case of increased capacities of variable renewable energy sources—solar and wind energy. The market coordinators or aggregators are introduced to adjust the electricity consumption by following the market situation. However, the role of aggregators is mainly analysed from the economic perspective, and the demand side management is performed to maximise the utilisation of low price power during off-peak hours. However, this research focuses on analysing the introduction of aggregators as a future player to increase the total share of renewable power and decrease the surplus solar and wind electricity occurrence. An in-depth system dynamics model has been developed to analyse the hourly power production and power consumption rates at the national level for the Latvia case study. The results show that introducing aggregators and load shifting based on standard peak shav... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: aircraft materials, CFRP composites, conductivity, damage tests, impulse current generator, lightning effects
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are lightweight and an increasingly used material with good mechanical properties. In the aviation industry, they are also required to have specific electrical properties that guarantee resistance to the direct and indirect lightning effects. The paper is focused on the description of a test stand and development of a method used to determine the electrical characteristics of conductive CFRP laminate samples with the use of high current impulses of lightning nature. Samples of three laminates (square format with side 30 × 30 cm) with a different composition were tested on the constructed stand, confirming the possibility of characterizing this type of laminate sample in terms of electrical conductivity and resistance to the effects of lightning current. It was possible to observe the impulse current flow (with a peak value up to 15 kA and a rise time above 6 µs) from the high voltage electrode placed in the center of the sample in all d... [more]
Moisture Risk Analysis for Three Construction Variants of a Wooden Inverted Flat Roof
Agnieszka Sadłowska-Sałęga, Krzysztof Wąs
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CLT structure humidity, hygrothermal simulations, passive house, wooden inverted flat roof
The paper presents an analysis of the hygrothermal performance of an inverted flat roof with a CLT (cross-laminated timber) structure in a building that meets the requirements of Passive House Standard (PHS) with regards to the potential risk of moisture. The calculations were made in the WUFI®Plus and WUFI®Bio software. The following variants were taken into account: three structure configurations, three different external climates and different scenarios of microclimate control and air change rate. The results of the calculations show that, especially in cooler climates, there is an actual moisture risk in the structure despite the excellent thermal insulation. The structure of the inverted flat roof, due to the use of a tight membrane on the outer side, allows for the partition to discharge the excess moisture only to the inside of the building. Ensuring the comfort of users may require periodic humidification of internal air, which translates directly into an increase in moisture c... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Dilution Of Precision (DOP), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) mission planning software, linear object, satellite measurements
The precision of a linear object measurement using satellite techniques is determined by the number and the relative position of the visible satellites by the receiver. The status of the visible constellation is described by the Dilution Of Precision (DOP). The obtained geometric coefficient values are dependent on many variables. When determining these values, field obstacles at the receiver location and satellite positions changing with time must be taken into account. Carrying out a series of surveys as part of a linear object Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurement campaign requires the optimisation problem to be solved. The manner of the inspection vehicle’s movement should be determined in such a way that the surveys are taken only within the pre-defined time frames and that the geometric coefficient values obtained at subsequent points of the route are as low as possible. The purpose of this article is to develop a software for the planning of a linear object GNSS... [more]
