Exploring the Factors Influencing Expansion of Nuclear Energy in Croatia
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Croatia, economy, energy policy, history, nuclear option, public opinion
Nuclear energy is an option that enables a significant reduction of greenhouse gases emissions at the national and European Union (EU) level. However, it is also an option that is mostly influenced by public opinion and an option that has strong cross-border impact. Croatia does not consider nuclear options, but a possible future turn to nuclear might have an influence on other EU countries. The possibility for such a turn is analyzed, taking into account public opinion as well as historical and economic factors. Based on the results of a public opinion survey, it can be deduced that the Croatian public is not inclined to nuclear energy and considers it a risky option, although nuclear power plants in neighboring countries are not perceived as a high-risk threat. Trust in government as an information source is very low. Despite historical aspects that suggest scientific and expert knowledge capable of handling nuclear build, public opinion and the low economic framework indicate that a... [more]

Energy Savings and Carbon Emission Mitigation Prospective of Building’s Glazing Variety, Window-to-Wall Ratio and Wall Thickness
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: annual carbon emission mitigation, annual cooling cost-saving, energy-efficient glasses, laterite rooms, wall thickness, window-to-wall ratio
Strategic selection of glazing, its window-to-wall ratio, and wall thickness of building reduce the energy consumption in the built environment. This paper presents the experimental results of solar optical properties of five glasses: clear, tinted bronze, tinted green, bronze reflective, and polymer dispersed liquid crystal glasses. Laterite room models were modeled with four different thicknesses and four different glasses using Design Builder, and thermal simulation tests were carried out using Energy Plus. The energy savings and carbon emission mitigation prospective of a building’s glazing variety, window-to-wall ratio (WWR), and wall thickness were investigated. The results revealed that among the five window glasses studied, the polymer dispersed liquid crystal glazing window (PDLCGW) was found to be the most energy-efficient for low heat gain in laterite rooms. The laterite room with 0.23 m wall thickness and 40% PDLCGW WWR reduced 18.9% heat gain in comparison with the laterit... [more]

Experimental Study of the Behavior of Phase Change Materials during Interrupted Phase Change Processes
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat flow meter apparatus, hysteresis, interrupted phase change, numerical models, phase change material
This research article explores the behavior of a phase change material (PCM) when it undergoes interrupted melting and freezing, through experimental investigations using a heat flow meter apparatus. A fatty acid-based organic PCM, encapsulated within polyethylene and thin aluminum foil layers, was experimentally tested in this study. Experiments were designed to represent multiple interrupted phase change scenarios that could occur within PCMs applied in buildings. The experimental results were analyzed and compared with previously reported assumptions in numerical models dealing with PCM hysteresis and interrupted phase change processes. These comparisons indicated that the assumptions used in the different numerical models considered can capture the interrupted phase change phenomena with varying degrees of accuracy. The findings also highlighted the need for additional experimental research on different phase change processes that can occur in building applications of PCMs.

Deactivation Model Study of High Temperature H2S Wet-Desulfurization by Using ZnO
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deactivation model, desulfurization, Energy, zinc oxide sorbent
High-temperature desulfurization techniques are fundamental for the development of reliable and efficient conversion systems of low-cost fuels and biomass that answer to the nowadays environmental and energy security issues. This is particularly true for biomass gasification coupled to SOFC systems where the sulfur content has to be minimized before being fed to the SOFC. Thus, commercially available zinc oxide has been studied and characterized as a desulfurizing agent in a fixed-bed reactor at high temperatures from 400 °C to 600 °C. The sorbent material was characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, and EDS analyses before and after adsorption. The sorbent’s sorption capacity has been evaluated at different temperatures, as well as the breakthrough curves. Moreover, the kinetic parameters as the initial sorption rate constant k0, the deactivation rate constant kd, and the activation energy have been calculated using the linearized deactivation model. The best performances have been obtained at... [more]

Progress in the Production of Biogas from Maize Silage after Acid-Heat Pretreatment
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acid pretreatment, biogas, lignocellulose, methane fermentation, microwave, pretreatment
One of the most effective technologies involving the use of lignocellulosic biomass is the production of biofuels, including methane-rich biogas. In order to increase the amount of gas produced, it is necessary to optimize the fermentation process, for example, by substrate pretreatment. The present study aimed to analyze the coupled effects of microwave radiation and the following acids: phosphoric(V) acid (H3PO4), hydrochloric acid (HCl), and sulfuric(VI) acid (H2SO4), on the destruction of a lignocellulosic complex of maize silage biomass and its susceptibility to anaerobic degradation in the methane fermentation process. The study compared the effects of plant biomass (maize silage) disintegration using microwave and conventional heating; the criterion differentiating experimental variants was the dose of acid used, i.e., 10% H3PO4, 10% HCl, and 10% H2SO4 in doses of 0.02, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, and 0.40 g/gTS. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy function stability analysis, future power system, grid-forming converter, HVDC, modular multilevel converter, power system stability, voltage source converters
The power system is going through a change in its very foundations. More and more power converters are being integrated into the electric grid to interface renewable energy resources and in high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems. This article presents a discussion on the stability of power systems when HVDC transmission systems based on modular multilevel converters (MMC) are connected in grid-forming (GFM) mode to the legacy power system using concepts of energy functions and Lyapunov stability theory and considering aspects of the interoperability between GFM converter technologies. As a base for the stability analysis, we review the main GFM converter technologies (droop and virtual synchronous machine), highlighting their differences. Then, we present a model using the center-of-inertia formulation for a multi-machine/multi-GFM converter power system representing a close future scenario of power systems where GFM converters might adopt different technologies. Evaluation of Thermoelectric Generators under Mismatching Conditions
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: mismatch, mismatching condition, numerical simulation, TEG, thermoelectric generator
Due to the wide usability of thermoelectric generators (TEG) in the industry and research fields, it is plausible that mismatching conditions are present on the thermal surfaces of a TEG device, which induces negative-performance effects due to uneven surface temperature distributions. For this reason, the objective of this study is to characterize numerically the open-circuit electric output voltage of a TEG device when a mismatching condition is applied to both the cold and hot sides of the selected N and P-type semiconductor material Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3. A validated numerical simulation paired with a parametric study is conducted using the Thermal-Electric module of ANSYS 2020 R1, for which different thermal boundary and mismatching conditions are applied while considering the temperature-dependent thermoelectrical properties of the N and P-type material. The results show an inverse relationship between the open-circuit voltage and the mismatching temperature difference. When a mismatchin... [more]

Optimization of Window Design for Daylight and Thermal Comfort in Cold Climate Conditions
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: daylight, energy optimization, IDA ICE, thermal comfort
Window design affects the overall performance of a building. It is important to include window design during the initial stages of a project since it influences the performance of daylight and thermal comfort as well as the energy demand for heating and cooling. The Norwegian building code facilitates two alternative methods for achieving a sufficient daylight, and only guidelines for adequate indoor thermal comfort. In this study, a typical Norwegian residential building was modeled to investigate whether the criteria and methods facilitate consistent and good performance through different scenario changes and furthermore, how the national regulations compare to European standards. A better insulated and more air-tight building has usually a lower annual heating demand, with only a marginal decrease in the daylight performance when the window design is unchanged. A more air-tight construction increases the risk of overheating, even in cold climates. This study confirms that a revision... [more]

A Hybrid Optimization Algorithm for Solving of the Unit Commitment Problem Considering Uncertainty of the Load Demand
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: equilibrium optimizer, Optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization, uncertainty, unit commitment
Unit commitment problem (UCP) is classified as a mixed-integer, large combinatorial, high-dimensional and nonlinear optimization problem. This paper suggests solving the UCP under deterministic and stochastic load demand using a hybrid technique that includes the modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) along with equilibrium optimizer (EO), termed as MPSO-EO. The proposed approach is tested firstly on 15 benchmark test functions, and then it is implemented to solve the UCP under two test systems. The results are basically compared to that of standard EO and previously applied optimization techniques in solving the UCP. In test system 1, the load demand is deterministic. The proposed technique is in the best three solutions for the 10-unit system with cost savings of 309.95 USD over standard EO and for the 20-unit system it shows the best results over all algorithms in comparison with cost savings of 1951.5 USD over standard EO. Subject: Materials
Keywords: air purification, filtration, PM2.5, pollution measurement, smog particles
Air pollution is a significant problem in city centers. According to public health care in Poland, there is a need for local authorities to propose good purification solutions in both outdoor and indoor conditions. The main objective of this study is the development of an appropriate filtration system for public transport, especially for buses and bus stops. Firstly, the authors justify the need for air filtration in the capital of Poland, Warsaw. The average concentration level of PM10 and PM2.5 dust particles in large Polish cities is presented. In addition, it is underlined that PM2.5 dust particles are carriers for coronavirus COVID-19 and easily inhaled by humans. In the next step, the authors introduce an experimental stand used in the examination of different filtration baffles. The filtration efficiency is defined and calculated according to experimental examinations. In these experiments, an antismog cover for air-conditioning split systems, an H13 HEPA filter and a three-stag... [more]

Gas Station Recognition Method Based on Monitoring Data of Heavy-Duty Vehicles
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CART algorithm, DBSCAN clustering, gas stations recognition, heavy-duty vehicles, oil quality evaluation, real-world data
With the requirement of reduced carbon emissions and air pollution, it has become much more important to monitor the oil quality used in heavy-duty vehicles, which have more than 2/3 transportation emissions. Some gas stations may provide unqualified fuel, resulting in uncontrollable emissions, which is a big challenge for environmental protection. Based on this focus, a gas station recognition method is proposed in this paper. Combining the CART algorithm with the DBSCAN clustering algorithm, the locations of gas stations were detected and recognized. Then, the oil quality analysis of these gas stations could be effectively evaluated from oil stability and vehicle emissions. Massive real-world data operating in Tangshan, China, collected from the Heavy-duty Vehicle Remote Emission Service and Management Platform, were used to verify the accuracy and robustness of the proposed model. Systematic Design and Circuit Analysis of Lightning Impulse Voltage Generation on Low-Inductance Loads
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: circuit design, Glaninger’s circuit, high-voltage tests, lightning impulse voltages, low-inductance load, reactor, transformer windings
The well-known circuit for the generation of lightning impulse voltage (LIV) on low-inductance loads was introduced by Glaninger in 1975, and the circuit component selection was proposed by Feser. However, the circuit and the approach for the component selection have some difficulties for which further adjustment is required for obtaining the waveform parameters according to the standard requirement. In this paper, an extended Glaninger’s circuit with an additional series resistor is proposed. Furthermore, a systematic design and circuit analysis of LIV generation for low-inductance loads are developed. With the help of a circuit simulator, the circuit analysis for the component selection is described. The validity of the proposed circuit was confirmed by some experimental results in comparison with the simulated ones. The proposed circuit and component selection provide not only the generation waveform according to the standard requirement but also other promising performances in term... [more]

Investigation on Electrical and Thermal Performance of Glass Fiber Reinforced Epoxy−MgO Nanocomposites
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CIV, epoxy nanocomposites, FTIR, GFRP, MgO, polarity reversal, TGA
Epoxy nanocomposites reinforced with glass fiber, have been prepared with various weight percentages (1, 3, and 5 wt.%) of MgO nanofillers to improve their electrical and thermal performance. An increase in MgO nanofiller content up to 3 wt.% tends to enhance surface discharge and corona inception voltages measured using fluorescence and UHF methods, under both AC and DC voltage profiles. Reduced initial surface potential along with increased decay rate is observed after inclusion of MgO nanoparticles. Before and after the polarity reversal phenomena, heterocharge formation is observed in the bulk of test specimens. In comparison with other test samples, the 3 wt.% sample had reflected lower electric field enhancement factor. After MgO filler was added to glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) has reduced, with the 3 wt.% specimen having the lowest CTE value. TGA measurements revealed an improvement in thermal stability of the GFRP... [more]

Water Hammer Control Using Additional Branched HDPE Pipe
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: additional pipe, branched pipe, hydraulic transients, numerical simulation, viscoelasticity, water hammer control
In pressurised pipeline systems, various water hammer events commonly occur. This phenomenon can cause extensive damage or even lead to a failure of the pumping system. The aim of this work is to experimentally re-examine the possibility of using an additional polymeric pipe, installed at the downstream end of the main pipeline, to control water hammer. A previous study on this topic investigated additional polymeric pipes connected to the hydraulic system with a short joint section of the same diameter as the main pipeline. In the current research, a different method of including an additional pipe was considered which involved connecting it with a pipe of a smaller diameter than the main pipeline. Three additional HDPE pipes, with different volumes, were investigated. The performance of the devices was studied for hydraulic transients induced by both rapid and slow, manual valve closures. Experimental results show that the additional polymeric pipe can provide significant pressure su... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Carex, forage, macroelements, microelements, sedges
The importance of mineral elements, both in animal and plant nutrition, has been well recognized, but, in the case of sedges, the mineral composition is relatively poorly known. Studies usually relate to the content of the elements in sedge communities, or sward or hay communities with sedge participation, and rarely of Carex representatives. The objective of our study was to determine the concentrations of C, N, Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Si, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Cr and Ni in the biomass of 11 Carex species commonly occurring on natural sites of Central European lowland. Interspecific differentiations have been observed in concentrations of the major and trace elements among studied sedge species. The elemental composition of examined Carex species is diversified but generally similar to the composition of grasses. The study shows that sedges can increase fodder value and, therefore, they should be considered in meadow management as a valuable component of economically important meadow communities.... [more]

Key Factors Influencing the Achievement of Climate Neutrality Targets in the Manufacturing Industry: LMDI Decomposition Analysis
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: CO2 emissions, decomposition analysis, energy policy, LMDI, manufacturing industry, Sustainability
The manufacturing industry is often caught in the sustainability dilemma between economic growth targets and climate action plans. In this study, a Log-Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) decomposition analysis is applied to investigate how the amount of industrial energy-related CO2 emissions in Latvia has changed in the period from 1995 to 2019. The change in aggregate energy-related CO2 emissions in manufacturing industries is measured by five different factors: the industrial activity effect, structural change effect, energy intensity effect, fuel mix effect, and emission intensity effect. The decomposition analysis results showed that while there has been significant improvement in energy efficiency and decarbonization measures in industry, in recent years, the impact of the improvements has been largely offset by increased industrial activity in energy-intensive sectors such as wood processing and non-metallic mineral production. The results show that energy efficiency measures in industry... [more]

Keywords: district heating networks, economic nonlinear optimization, Julia (JuMP), multi-sources, solar thermal energy
The aim of the ISORC/OPTIMISER project is to increase and improve the use of solar thermal energy in district heating networks. One of the main tasks of the project is to develop an optimization tool for the sizing and operation of a solar district heating network. This is the first optimization tool using an open-source interface (Julia, JuMP) and solver (Ipopt) to solve nonlinear problems. This paper presents the multi-period optimization problem which is implemented to consider the dynamic variations in a year, represented by four typical days, with an hourly resolution. The optimum is calculated for a total duration of 20 years. First, this paper presents the modeling of the different components of a solar district heating network production plant: district network demand, storage and three sources, i.e., a fossil (gas) and two renewable (solar and biomass) sources. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: adiabatic heat, enthalpy, mathematical modeling, reaction rate, Simulation, urea stabilization
Urea is the final product of protein metabolism in mammals and can be found in different biological fluids. Use of mammalian urine in agricultural production as organic fertilizer requires safe handling to avoid the formation of ammonia that will decrease the fertilizer value due to the loss of nitrogen. Safe handling is also required to minimize the decomposition of urea into condensed products such as biuret and cyanuric acid, which will also have a negative impact on the potential sustainable production of crops and sanitation technologies. The study of thermodynamics and reaction kinetics of urea stabilization plays a key role in understanding the conditions under which undesirable compounds and impurities in urea-based fertilizers and urea-based selective catalytic reduction systems are formed. For this reason, we studied the reaction of urea in acid media to achieve urea stabilization by modeling the reaction of urea with sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, and estimating the reac... [more]

One of the most important elements during photogrammetric studies is the appropriate lighting of the object or area under investigation. Nevertheless, the concept of “adequate lighting” is relative. Therefore, we have attempted, based on experimental proof of concept (technology readiness level—TRL3), to verify the impact of various types of lighting emitted by LED light sources for scene illumination and their direct influence on the quality of the photogrammetric study of a 3D urban mock-up. An important issue in this study was the measurement and evaluation of the artificial light sources used, based on illuminance (E), correlated colour temperature (CCT), colour rendering index (CRI) and Spectral power distribution (SPD) and the evaluation of the obtained point clouds (seven photogrammetric products of the same object, developed for seven different lighting conditions). Keywords: acceleration, breaking, desorption, dispersed phase, force, pressure, speed
In this paper, the authors consider the processes of dynamic interaction between the boiling particles of the dispersed phase of the emulsion leading to the large droplet breakup. Differences in the consideration of forces that determine the breaking of non-boiling and boiling droplets have been indicated in the study. They have been determined by the possibility of using the model to define the processes of displacement, deformation, or fragmentation of the inclusion of the dispersed phase under the influence of a set of neighboring particles. The dynamics of bubbles in a compressible liquid with consideration for interfacial heat and mass transfer has also been analyzed in the paper. The effect of standard and system parameters on the intensity of cavitation processes is considered. Floating Offshore Vertical Axis Wind Turbines: Opportunities, Challenges and Way Forward
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating offshore wind, offshore wind, VAWT, vertical axis wind turbine
The offshore wind sector is expanding to deep water locations through floating platforms. This poses challenges to horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) due to the ever growing size of blades and floating support structures. As such, maintaining the structural integrity and reducing the levelised cost of energy (LCoE) of floating HAWTs seems increasingly difficult. An alternative to these challenges could be found in floating offshore vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). It is known that VAWTs have certain advantages over HAWTs, and in fact, some small-scale developers have successfully commercialised their onshore prototypes. In contrast, it remains unknown whether VAWTs can offer an advantage for deep water floating offshore wind farms. Therefore, here we present a multi-criteria review of different aspects of VAWTs to address this question.
