Michał Gołębiewski, Marta Galant-Gołębiewska
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CHP system, PV system, risk evaluation, sensitivity analyses
Today, distributed energy production is a key activity supporting energy systems in many countries around the world. Applicable regulations, fees and subsidies encourage entrepreneurs to look for solutions that will reduce operating costs and limit their negative impact on the natural environment. In the article, it was decided to carry out a technical and economic analysis and investment risk analysis for the distributed production of electricity and heat based on natural gas. Six scenarios were taken into account, depending on the number of gas engines, the use of the photovoltaic installation and the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system. It has been shown that the most advantageous of the presented solution is the use of a system adjusted to the power of an industrial plant (return on investment in 4th year). The least beneficial for the investor are solutions aimed at the use and resale of energy supplemented with photovoltaic panels and an ORC system. An investment risk analysis and... [more]
Recent Advances in Vibration Control Methods for Wind Turbine Towers
Georgios Malliotakis, Panagiotis Alevras, Charalampos Baniotopoulos
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multi-hazard, review, tuned liquid column damper, tuned mass damper, vibration control, wind turbine tower
Wind power is a substantial resource to assist global efforts on the decarbonization of energy. The drive to increase capacity has led to ever-increasing blade tip heights and lightweight, slender towers. These structures are subject to a variety of environmental loads that give rise to vibrations with potentially catastrophic consequences, making the mitigation of the tower’s structural vibrations an important factor for low maintenance requirements and reduced damage risk. Recent advances in the most important vibration control methods for wind turbine towers are presented in this paper, exploring the impact of the installation environment harshness on the performance of state-of-the-art devices. An overview of the typical structural characteristics of a modern wind turbine tower is followed by a discussion of typical damages and their link to known collapse cases. Furthermore, the vibration properties of towers in harsh multi-hazard environments are presented and the typical design... [more]
Injection and Combustion Analysis of Pure Rapeseed Oil Methyl Ester (RME) in a Pump-Line-Nozzle Fuel Injection System
Flavio Caresana, Marco Bietresato, Massimiliano Renzi
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: B100, biodiesel, biodiesel NOx effect, compression ignition engine, heat release rate, injection pressure, injection timing advance
This work suggests an interpretation to the quantitatively higher formation of NOx in a compression ignition (CI) engine when fueled with pure biodiesel (B100). A comparative study about the use of rapeseed oil methyl ester (RME) and diesel fuel mixtures on injection timing, in-chamber pressure, heat release rate, and NOx emissions were carried out using a diesel engine equipped with a pump-line-nozzle injection system. Such engines are still widely adopted mainly in agriculture, as the fleet of agricultural machinery is particularly old (often over 20 years) and the use of biofuels can reduce the environmental footprint of the sector. This work aims to supply some general explanations and figures useful to interpret the phenomena occurring within the fuel line and in the combustion process when using biodiesel, as well as in engines with different construction characteristics and fueling systems. Given the contradictory results available in the literature, the so-called “biodiesel NOx... [more]

Małgorzata Basińska, Katarzyna Ratajczak, Michał Michałkiewicz, Paweł Fuć, Maciej Siedlecki
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, IAQ, indoor air quality, nursery, outdoor air quality, PM10, traffic
The quality of outdoor air in many places, especially in urbanized areas, is bad; therefore, a series of studies aimed at assessing the impact of outdoor air parameters on indoor air quality was conducted. Four nurseries (three buildings) located in different parts of Poznań, Poland were selected as research sites. During the research period, the concentrations of CO2, PM2.5, and PM10 inside and outside the buildings over time were analyzed. Measurements outside the buildings were supplemented with an analysis of traffic near nurseries and an assessment of pollutant emissions from vehicles of various categories. Measurements were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in a weekly series during winter (December)—(W), spring (April)—(S), and at the end of spring (June)—(LS). Testing and analyses indicated poor indoor air quality in three out of four nurseries. To ensure indoor air quality at the proper level, it is necessary to supply rooms with outside air. Ventilating rooms by airing,... [more]
The Required Amount of Ventilation Air for the Classroom and the Possibility of Air Infiltration through the Windows
Piotr Lis, Anna Lis
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air infiltration, classroom, educational building, natural ventilation, window air-tightness
The majority of education buildings in Poland are equipped with natural (gravity) ventilation, where the air inflow depends on the level of window airtightness. A complete statistical urban population of 50 school buildings in Czestochowa have been examined. The main issue to be clarified is the answer to the following questions: Is it theoretically possible to supply enough air to meet the ventilation requirements with gravity ventilation? What is the airtightness of the windows at which it will be possible? The average technical conditions of windows in the analysed buildings were bad. However, only in the case in which high external air leakage coefficient a = 7.0 m3/(h m daPa2/3) (q100KL = 32.4912 m3/(h m) is the amount of air passing through the leaks similar to the quantitative ventilation requirements for classrooms. The quantity of air flowing from the outside through modernized windows that meet the technical requirements (a = 0.6 to 1.0 m3/(m h daPa2/3)) covers on average onl... [more]

Li Lu, Jianting Li, Xuhui Zhang, Yingjun Li, Fujian Ma
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: clay minerals or illite, imbibition, IS, NMR, shale
Imbibition is an important mechanism of recovery during waterflooding and low flow-back during fracking in shale reservoirs. Experiments were carried out to study the development of imbibition in shale samples. The effects of clay minerals, especially the illite and IS, were mainly investigated and discussed. The imbibition under different pressures was conducted and compared. The influence of clay minerals on imbibition in shale is significant and complex. It is shown that the low content of illite and IS and small capillary force lead to small imbibition mass and speed. Formation of new micro fractures due to the swelling of clay minerals can cause the permeability to increase and the imbibition to be speeded up. The pore structure, the content of IS, and the capillary force affect the imbibition process significantly. The external pressure obviously affects the imbibition speed and the final imbibition mass. The content of clay minerals is more important to the formation of new micr... [more]

Rainer Baule, Michael Naumann
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity price dispersion, electricity price volatility, intraday electricity market, renewable energies
Intraday electricity trading on the continuous intraday market of EPEX SPOT is particularly well suited for the rebalancing of energy production. We analyzed the volatility and dispersion of individual hourly contracts, taking into account the particularities of the market, due to which the standard volatility measure from financial time series cannot be applied. We used and analyzed five measures for price fluctuations, which turned out to be similarly well suited for electricity contracts, with small differences. We then identified fundamental drivers of price fluctuations: the relative share of wind in the overall mix increased dispersion. In addition, price dispersion was positively correlated with the traded volume as well as the absolute difference between the day-ahead auction price and the volume-weighted intraday price. We furthermore analyzed the timely structure of price fluctuations to identify forecast indicators for a contract’s peak trading hour before maturity, finding... [more]

Hyo-Jun Kim, Young-Hum Cho
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: optimal control, prediction model, sensor calibration, terminal unit, variable air volume system
This study reviewed the existing studies on the types of variable air volume (VAV) terminal units, control and operation methods, prediction models, and sensor calibration methods. As a result of analyzing the existing research trends on the system type, characteristics, and control method of VAV terminal units studies such as theoretical verification and energy simulation were conducted to improve the existing control methods, reset the set value using a mathematical model, and add a monitoring sensor for the application of control methods. The mathematical model used in the study of VAV terminal unit control methods was used to derive set values for minimum air volume, supply temperature, ventilation requirements, and indoor comfort. The mathematical model has a limitation in collecting input information for professional knowledge and model development, and development of a building environment prediction model using a black box model is being studied. The VAV terminal unit system us... [more]

George Halkos, Kyriaki Tsilika
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: correlation analysis, energy use, k-means clustering, trends, visual data exploration
The paper places emphasis on primary energy resources, their covariation, and their correlation with socioeconomic factors and aims to provide a systematic analysis of their development over time. The analysis uses evidence from European Union (EU) country-level data and is based on visual analytics techniques. Different results from the same territories show that energy consumption does not always reflect or is due to climatological or meteorological conditions. Extensive use of visualization is adopted as a means of contributing to the understanding of energy use, some involved problems and concepts, and energy consumption trends over time. We present an approach that addresses the informatics challenges based on the integration of visualization software, data integration, and cluster analysis. Our cross-sectional energy review advocates that EU energy leaders are moving towards a low-carbon economy. The correlations of energy variables with economic and pollution effects are stronge... Voltage Profile Analysis on a Grid with Power Injection from a Wind Farm
Noah Serem, Josiah Munda, Lawrence Letting
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid, power quality, voltage profile, wind energy
Wind power penetration into the grid is increasing throughout the world due to centralized power generation constraints such as shortage of fossil fuel, need to reduce gas emissions, long transmission losses and need for more supply of electrical power. Connection of wind power into the grid results in power quality issues such as voltage profile changes and harmonics. This necessitates coming up with correction measures in order to meet power quality standards. This paper deals with the analysis of the effects of injecting wind power to the grid on voltage profile. Branch participation factors are used to analyze the sections of the grid where effects on voltage profile are highest due to wind power penetration. Reactive power-voltage sensitivity analysis is used to determine the buses that are more sensitive to the changes brought by the wind power injection. Two cases were considered for the injection of the wind power: IEEE 14 test bus system and IEEE 39 test bus system.
Optimized Extreme Learning Machine-Based Main Bearing Temperature Monitoring Considering Ambient Conditions’ Effects
Zhengnan Hou, Xiaoxiao Lv, Shengxian Zhuang
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ambient condition, Extreme Learning Machine, Genetic Algorithm, SCADA, temperature monitoring, Wind Turbine
Wind Turbines (WTs) are exposed to harsh conditions and can experience extreme weather, such as blizzards and cold waves, which can directly affect temperature monitoring. This paper analyzes the effects of ambient conditions on WT monitoring. To reduce these effects, a novel WT monitoring method is also proposed in this paper. Compared with existing methods, the proposed method has two advantages: (1) the changes in ambient conditions are added to the input of the WT model; (2) an Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) optimized by Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to construct the WT model. Using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), compared with the method that does not consider the changes in ambient conditions, the proposed method can reduce the number of false alarms and provide an earlier alarm when a failure does occur.

Keywords: Bayesian Average Classical Estimates (BACE), economic, energy from renewable sources, institutional and social factors, Paris Agreement
The paper aims to identify the most likely factors that determine the demand for energy consumption from renewable sources (renewable energy consumption—REC) in European countries. Although in Europe, a high environmental awareness is omnipresent, countries differ in scope and share of REC due to historical energetic policies and dependencies, investments into renewable and traditional energetic sectors, R&D development, structural changes required by energetic policy change, and many other factors. The study refers to a set of macroeconomic, institutional, and social factors affecting energetic renewable policy and REC in selected European countries in two points of time: i.e., before and after the Paris Agreement. The Bayesian Average Classical Estimates (BACE) is applied to indicate the most likely factors affecting REC in 2015 and 2018. The comparison of the results reveals that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) level, nuclear and hydro energy consumption were the determinants signi... [more]

Keywords: COVID-19, demand-side management, demographic characteristic, energy management, household energy consumption, load profile, social distancing, time-varying reproduction number
Since January 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has been impacting various aspects of people’s daily lives and the economy. The first case of COVID-19 in South Korea was identified on 20 January 2020. The Korean government implemented the first social distancing measures in the first week of March 2020. As a result, energy consumption in the industrial, commercial and educational sectors decreased. On the other hand, residential energy consumption increased as telecommuting work and remote online classes were encouraged. However, the impact of social distancing on residential energy consumption in Korea has not been systematically analyzed. This study attempts to analyze the impact of social distancing implemented as a result of COVID-19 on residential energy consumption with time-varying reproduction numbers of COVID-19. A two-way fixed effect model and demographic characteristics are used to account for the heterogeneity. The changes in household energy consumption by load shape group are... [more]
Mechanical Wear Contact between the Wheel and Rail on a Turnout with Variable Stiffness
Jerzy Kisilowski, Rafał Kowalik
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: high-speed, rail, stiffness, turnout, wear
The operation and maintenance of railroad turnouts for rail vehicle traffic moving at speeds from 200 km/h to 350 km/h significantly differ from the processes of track operation without turnouts, curves, and crossings. Intensive wear of the railroad turnout components (switch blade, retaining rods, rails, and cross-brace) occurs. The movement of a rail vehicle on a switch causes high-dynamic impact, including vertical, normal, and lateral forces. This causes intensive rail and wheel wear. This paper presents the wear of rails and of the needle in a railroad turnout on a straight track. Geometrical irregularities of the track and the generation of vertical and normal forces occurring at the point of contact of the wheel with turnout elements are additionally considered in this study. To analyse the causes of rail wear in turnouts, selected technical−operational parameters were assumed, such as the type of rail vehicle, the type of turnout, and the maximum allowable axle load. The wear p... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: backpropagation neural network, electric vehicles, lithium-ion battery, multi-channel input (MCI) profile, remaining useful life
Remaining useful life (RUL) is a crucial assessment indicator to evaluate battery efficiency, robustness, and accuracy by determining battery failure occurrence in electric vehicle (EV) applications. RUL prediction is necessary for timely maintenance and replacement of the battery in EVs. This paper proposes an artificial neural network (ANN) technique to predict the RUL of lithium-ion batteries under various training datasets. A multi-channel input (MCI) profile is implemented and compared with single-channel input (SCI) or single input (SI) with diverse datasets. A NASA battery dataset is utilized and systematic sampling is implemented to extract 10 sample values of voltage, current, and temperature at equal intervals from each charging cycle to reconstitute the input training profile. The experimental results demonstrate that MCI profile-based RUL prediction is highly accurate compared to SCI profile under diverse datasets. It is reported that RMSE for the proposed MCI profile-based... [more]

Yan Shen, Ping Wang, Xuesong Wang, Ke Sun
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: extreme learning machine, improved empirical mode decomposition, surface vibration signal
Accurately predicting surface vibration signals of diesel engines is the key to evaluating the operation quality of diesel engines. Based on an improved empirical mode decomposition and extreme learning machine algorithm, the characteristics of diesel engine surface vibration signal were detected, predicted, and analyzed. First, the surface vibration signal was decomposed into a series of signal components by an improved empirical mode decomposition algorithm. Then, the extreme learning machine algorithm was applied to each signal component to obtain the predicted value of the corresponding signal component and determine the characteristics of the ground vibration signal. Compared with the empirical mode decomposition−extremum learning machine algorithm and the extremum learning machine algorithm, the results show that the improved empirical mode decomposition−extremum learning machine algorithm is feasible and effective.

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fly ash, numerical simulation, slag, waste incinerator
This study is focused on a “V-type” waste incinerator for municipal solid waste (MSW) combustion. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are used to study the MSW combustion process. The characteristics of fly ash and slag are analyzed by using a laser particle analyzer, scanning electron microscope, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the error between the CFD simulation data and measured data is less than 10%, and the changing trend of the combustion process is well-modeled. The fly ash mainly has an irregular spherical or ellipsoid structure, whereas the slag mainly has an irregular porous structure. The main constituents of the ash and slag are CaO and SiO2, along with heavy metal elements such as Cu, Pb, and Cr.

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: geographic information systems, GIS overlay analyses, multi-criteria decision analyses, PED boundary, positive energy districts
Discussions regarding the definition of Positive Energy Districts and the concept of a boundary are still being actively held. Even though there are certain initiatives working on the boundary limitations for PEDs, there is no methodology or tool developed for selecting peculiar spaces for future PED implementations. The paper focuses on a flexible GIS-based Multicriteria assessment method that identifies the most suitable areas to reach an annual positive non-renewable energy balance. For that purpose, a GIS-based tool is developed to indicate the boundary from an energy perspective harmonized with urban design and land-use planning. The method emphasizes evaluation through economic, social, political, legal, environmental, and technical criteria, and the results present the suitability of areas at macro and micro scales. The current study outlines macro-scale analyses in six European cities that represent Follower Cities under the MAKING-CITY H2020 project. Further research will be c... [more]
Comparing Different Levels of Technical Systems for a Modular Safety Approval—Why the State of the Art Does Not Dispense with System Tests Yet
Björn Klamann, Hermann Winner
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automated driving systems, decomposition, fault tree analysis, modular safety approval, modular testing, safety validation
While systems in the automotive industry have become increasingly complex, the related processes require comprehensive testing to be carried out at lower levels of a system. Nevertheless, the final safety validation is still required to be carried out at the system level by automotive standards like ISO 26262. Using its guidelines for the development of automated vehicles and applying them for field operation tests has been proven to be economically unfeasible. The concept of a modular safety approval provides the opportunity to reduce the testing effort after updates and for a broader set of vehicle variants. In this paper, we present insufficiencies that occur on lower levels of hierarchy compared to the system level. Using a completely new approach, we show that errors arise due to faulty decomposition processes wherein, e.g., functions, test scenarios, risks, or requirements of a system are decomposed to the module level. Thus, we identify three main categories of errors: insuffici... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: finite element model (FEM), green house gases (GHG), life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle cost (LCC), prefabricated footing system, reactive soil foundation
The need for advancements in residential construction and the hazard induced by the shrink−swell reactive soil movement prompted the development of the prefabricated footing system of this study, which was assessed and compared to a conventional waffle raft using a multi-criteria analysis. The assessment evaluates the structural performance, cost efficiency, and sustainability using finite element modelling, life cycle cost analysis, and life cycle assessment, respectively. The structural performance of the developed prefabricated system was found to have reduced the deformation and cracking by approximately 40%. However, the cost, GHG emission, and embodied energy were higher in the prefabricated footing system due to the greater required amount of concrete and steel than that of the waffle raft. The cost difference between the two systems can be reduced to as low as 6% when prefabricated systems were installed in a highly reactive sites with large floor areas. The life cycle assessme... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: back-to-back converter control, coupled microgrids, dynamic frequency regulation, over-generation control, overload management, power exchange link, power-sharing
The two common mechanisms of load-shedding and renewable curtailment can prevent provisional overloading and excessive generation and the subsequent unacceptable voltage and frequency deviation in standalone microgrids (MGs), which makes MGs less resilient and reliable. However, instead of enabling load-shedding or renewable curtailment, such overloading or over-generation problems can be alleviated more efficiently and cost-effectively by provisionally interconnecting the neighboring MGs to exchange power amongst themselves. In such a scheme, the interconnected MGs can supply their local demand, as well as a portion of the demand of the adjacent MGs. In order to implement this strategy, a three-phase ac link can be used as the power exchange network, while each MG is coupled to the link through a back-to-back power electronics converter, in order to maintain the autonomy of each MG if they are eachoperated under different standards. This paper proposes a suitable decentralized power m... [more]
The Effects of the Length and Conductivity of Artificial Fracture on Gas Production from a Class 3 Hydrate Reservoir
Shilong Shang, Lijuan Gu, Hailong Lu
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial fracture, gas production, hydrate reservoir, numerical simulation
Natural gas hydrate is considered as a potential energy resource. To develop technologies for the exploitation of natural gas hydrate, several field gas production tests have been carried out in permafrost and continental slope sediments. However, the gas production rates in these tests were still limited, and the low permeability of the hydrate-bearing sediments is identified as one of the crucial factors. Artificial fracturing is proposed to promote gas production rate by improving reservoir permeability. In this research, numerical studies about the effect of fracture length and fluid conductivity on production performance were carried out on an artificially fractured Class 3 hydrate reservoir (where the single hydrate zone is surrounded by an overlaying and underlying hydrate-free zone), in which the equivalent conductivity method was applied to depict the artificial fracture. The results show that artificial fracture can enhance gas production by offering an extra fluid flow chann... [more]
