Methods of Determining Pressure Drop in Internal Channels of a Hydraulic Motor
Pawel Sliwinski, Piotr Patrosz
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD calculation, internal channels in motor, k pressure losses, oil, pressure efficiency, satellite motor, Water
In this paper, new methods for determining the pressure drop in internal channels of a hydraulic motor are proposed and described. Mathematical models of pressure losses in internal channels have also been described. Experimental tests of the satellite motor were carried out according to one of the proposed methods. The tests were carried out for two liquids, i.e., water and mineral oil. Experimental studies have shown that at a high flow rate in the motor supplied with water the pressure losses are a dozen or so percent greater than in the motor supplied with oil. However, at low flow rates is the inverse, that is, the pressure losses in the motor supplied with water are about ten percent lower than in the motor supplied with oil. The CFD calculation of the pressure drop in the internal channel of the motor was also conducted. It was assumed that holes in the commutation unit plate are placed face to face and that the liquid did not cause changes in the working chambers’ volume. In th... [more]

Tasnia Hassan Nazifa, Noori M. Cata Saady, Carlos Bazan, Sohrab Zendehboudi, Adnan Aftab, Talib M. Albayati
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, blood, livestock blood, protein, slaughterhouse waste
Blood from livestock slaughtering imposes a high organic pollution load and risks. If it is discharged untreated to sewer systems, it increases the organic pollution load on wastewater treatment plants by 35−50%. This paper reviews blood anaerobic digestion. It analyzes the quantities, composition, methane potential reported, microbiology, biochemical pathways of blood protein degradation, environmental and health issues, and strategies suggested to manage them during livestock blood anaerobic digestion. Although challenging, anaerobic digestion of blood as a mono-substrate is possible if the culture-reactor system is controlled based on a complete characterization and understanding of the microbial community and its metabolic activities. Co-digestion of blood and other feedstock proceeds well if the mixtures are well designed. Generally, the specific methane yield from digesting blood alone ranges between zero and 0.45 m3 kg−1 protein, whereas for co-digesting blood and other substrat... [more]
A Two-Parameter Model for Water-Lubricated Pipeline Transportation of Unconventional Crudes

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: core annular flow, friction loss, lubricated pipe flow, statistical analysis, wall fouling, water-assisted flow
Water-lubricated flow technology is an environmentally friendly and economically beneficial means of transporting unconventional viscous crudes. The current research was initiated to investigate an engineering model suitable to estimate the frictional pressure losses in water-lubricated pipelines as a function of design/operating parameters such as flow rates, water content, pipe size, and liquid properties. The available models were reviewed and critically assessed for this purpose. As the reliability of the existing models was not found to be satisfactory, a new two-parameter model was developed based on a phenomenological analysis of the dataset available in the open literature. The experimental conditions for these data included pipe sizes and oil viscosities in the ranges of 25−260 mm and 1220−26,500 mPa·s, respectively. A similar range of water equivalent Reynolds numbers corresponding to the investigated flow conditions was 103−106. The predictions of the new model agreed well w... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: direct methanol fuel cell, fuel cell, poly (ethylene oxide), poly (vinyl alcohol), proton exchange membrane, titanium oxide
Herein, a pair of inexpensive and eco-friendly polymers were blended and formulated based on poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA). FTIR, XRD, EDX and TEM techniques were used to describe a Phosphated titanium oxide (PO4TiO2) nanotube synthesised using a straightforward impregnation-calcination procedure. For the first time, the produced nanoparticles were inserted as a doping agent into this polymeric matrix at a concentration of (1−3) wt.%. FTIR, TGA, DSC and XRD were used to identify the formed composite membranes. Furthermore, because there are more hydrogen bonds generated between the polymer’s functional groups and oxygen functional groups PO4TiO2, oxidative stability and tensile strength are improved with increasing doping addition and obtain better results than Nafion117. The permeability of methanol reduced as the weight % of PO4TiO2 increased. In addition, the ionic conductivity of the membrane with 3 wt.% PO4-TiO2 is raised to (28 mS cm−1). The optimised... [more]

Luca Viscito, Gianluca Lillo, Giovanni Napoli, Alfonso William Mauro
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic simulation, heat driven cooling systems, multi-ejector, seasonal performance, thermo-economic analysis
In this paper, a seasonal performance analysis of a hybrid ejector cooling system is carried-out, by considering a multi-ejector pack as expansion device. A 20 kW ejector-based chiller was sized to obtain the optimal tradeoff between performance and investment costs. The seasonal performance of the proposed solution was then evaluated through a dynamic simulation able to obtain the performance of the designed chiller with variable ambient temperatures for three different reference climates. The optimized multi-ejector system required three or four ejectors for any reference climate and was able to enhance the system performance at partial load, with a significant increase (up to 107%) of the seasonal energy efficiency ratio. The proposed system was then compared to conventional cooling technologies supplied by electric energy (electrical chillers EHP) or low-grade heat sources (absorption chillers AHP) by considering the total costs for a lifetime of 20 years and electric energy-specif... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrated solar power, energy value, hydrothermal system, levelized cost of electricity, net cost of electricity, thermal energy storage
Economic feasibility studies of concentrated solar power (CSP) plants with thermal energy storage (TES) systems have been mainly based on the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), disregarding the economic benefits to the electricity system resulting from the dispatchability of the CSP plants. The analysis of these benefits is essential since the existence of storage can provide greater operating flexibility to the system. Although there are few studies on the benefits of CSP plants in thermoelectric systems, this analysis has not yet been done in a predominantly hydroelectric system. In this paper, CSP plants with TES systems were inserted in a hydrothermal system in order to estimate the economic benefits and the net cost of electricity generated by those plants. The System Advisor Model (SAM) and the hydrothermal scheduling model DESSEM were used in a real case study of inclusion of CSP plants in the Brazilian system. The results indicate that the cost of a CSP plant, previously est... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autonomous shuttle, contactless charging, finite elements method (FEM), inductive power transfer (IPT), Ni–MH batteries
The inductive power transfer (IPT) is expected to greatly contribute towards electrification in transportation. In fact, IPT charging technology has the potential to overcome several limitations of conductive charging: in particular, the process can be fully automatable, and both static and dynamic charging are allowed, thus reducing the size of the battery pack. Additionally, safety is increased due to the absence of safety issues related to loss of cable insulation or to the unwanted interruption of the plug-socket connection. This paper presents, from a systematic approach, the design and realization of a prototype for IPT charging of autonomous shuttles in automated warehouses. First of all, the typical mission profile of the shuttle was properly identified, and a storage system based on power-oriented electrochemical cells was sized. Based on that, the architecture of the IPT system was chosen, both for transmitting and receiving sections. The pads were designed for this purpose,... [more]

Ying-Yi Hong, Chih-Yang Hsiao
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Particle Swarm Optimization, photovoltaics, standalone power grid, under-frequency load shedding, wind power
Under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) prevents a power grid from a blackout when a severe contingency occurs. UFLS schemes can be classified into two categories—event-based and response-driven. A response-driven scheme utilizes 81L relays with pre-determined settings while an event-based scheme develops a pre-specified look-up table. In this work, an event-based UFLS scheme is presented for use in an offshore standalone power grid with renewables to avoid cascading outages due to low frequency protection of wind power generators and photovoltaic arrays. Possible “N-1” and “N-2” forced outages for peak and off-peak load scenarios in summer and winter are investigated. For each forced outage event, the total shed load is minimized and the frequency nadir is maximized using particle swarm optimization (PSO). In order to reduce the computation time, initialization and parallel computing are implemented using MATLAB/Simulink because all forced outage events and all particles in PSO are mutua... [more]
Design and Characteristic Analysis of a Homopolar Synchronous Machine Using a NI HTS Field Coil
Young Jin Hwang
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: field coil, high-temperature superconductor, homopolar synchronous machine, no-insulation
This paper deals with a homopolar synchronous machine (HSM) applying high-temperature superconducting (HTS) field coils. Superconductors, especially high-temperature superconductors, have high potential as advanced materials for next-generation electrical machines due to their high critical current density and excellent mechanical strength. However, coils made with high-temperature superconductors have a high risk of being damaged in the event of a quench due to the intrinsic low normal zone propagation velocity (NZPV). Therefore, the coil protection issue has been regarded as one of the most important research fields in HTS coil applications. Currently, the most actively studied method for quench protection of the HTS coils is the no-insulation (NI) winding technique. The NI winding technique is a method of winding an HTS coil without inserting an insulating material between turns. This method can automatically bypass the current to the adjacent turn when a local quench occurs inside... [more]
Solar Irradiance Prediction with Machine Learning Algorithms: A Brazilian Case Study on Photovoltaic Electricity Generation
Gabriel de Freitas Viscondi, Solange N. Alves-Souza
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, extreme learning machine, Machine Learning, solar energy forecasting, support vector machine
Forecasting photovoltaic electricity generation is one of the key components to reducing the impacts of solar power natural variability, nurturing the penetration of renewable energy sources. Machine learning is a well-known method that relies on the principle that systems can learn from previously measured data, detecting patterns which are then used to predict future values of a target variable. These algorithms have been used successfully to predict incident solar irradiation, but the results depend on the specificities of the studied location due to the natural variability of the meteorological parameters. This paper presents an extensive comparison of the three ML algorithms most used worldwide for forecasting solar radiation, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), aiming at the best prediction of daily solar irradiance in a São Paulo context. The largest dataset in Brazil for meteorological parameters, containing measure... [more]

Keywords: geometric optimization, magnesium silicide, multiphysics simulation, tetrahedrite, thermoelectric generators, thermoelectric module design, waste heat recovery
Industrial Waste Heat Recovery (IWHR) is one of the areas with strong potential for energy efficiency and emissions reductions in industry. Thermoelectric (TE) generators (TEGs) are among the few technologies that are intrinsically modular and can convert heat directly into electricity without moving parts, so they are nearly maintenance-free and can work unattended for long periods of time. However, most existing TEGs are only suitable for small-scale niche applications because they typically display a cost per unit power and a conversion efficiency that is not competitive with competing technologies, and they also tend to rely on rare and/or toxic materials. Moreover, their geometric configuration, manufacturing methods and heat exchangers are often not suitable for large-scale applications. The present analysis aims to tackle several of these challenges. A module incorporating constructive solutions suitable for upscaling, namely, using larger than usual TE elements (up to 24 mm in... Keywords: abiotic depletion potential for fossil fuels (ADPF), acidification potential (AP), floating wind turbine, global warming potential (GWP), life cycle assessment (LCA), offshore wind turbine, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The intensive increase of global warming every year affects our world negatively and severely. The use of renewable energy sources has gained importance in reducing and eliminating the effect of global warming. To this end, new technologies are being developed to facilitate the use of these resources. One of these technological developments is the floating wind turbine. In order to evaluate the respective environmental footprint of these systems, a life cycle assessment (LCA) is herein applied. In this study, the environmental impact of floating wind turbines is investigated using a life cycle assessment approach and the results are compared with the respective ones of onshore and jacket offshore wind turbines of the same power capacity. The studied floating wind turbine has a square foundation that is open at its centre and is connected to the seabed with a synthetic fibre-nylon anchorage system. The environmental impact of all life cycles of such a structure, i.e., the manufacture, t... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: circular economy, consumption, man-made fibres, quality, regenerated fibres, regenerated protein fibres, speedcycles, textile history, textiles, waste
Sustainable methods of practice within the fashion and textile industry (FTI) often strive to employ a circular economy that aims to eliminate waste through the continual use of resources. Complex problems such as waste, consumption, and overproduction are heavily intertwined; the main aim of this paper is to report on research focused on re-examining the potential of food waste streams as a commercially viable and circular source of raw materials for the FTI. Herein, regenerated protein fibres (RPFs) from food production waste streams rich in protein have been chosen as the main topic of focus. RPFs have a rich and relevant history from a local manufacturing perspective during wartime and post-war clothing rationing (1941−1949) in the UK. RPFs were used to meet civilian needs for wool-based textiles as part of a wider series of ‘make do and mend’ strategies designed to manage the consumption of new textile products. However, RPFs demonstrated inferior quality in terms of durability wh... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annual economic performances, natural draft hybrid cooling, optimal operation strategies, waterside operation schemes
For thermal power generation, the natural draft hybrid cooling system (NDHCs) with airflows in parallel design gives a multi-objective solution for water saving, performance enhancement and maintenance issues, like corrosion, by switching the loads of wet and dry sections. Performances of dry and wet sections interact with each other in the highly integrated system, increasing the complexity of operation strategies. In this context the present paper examines eight different operation schemes to reveal the relationships of ambient conditions and operation schemes. Comprehensive comparisons in the view of cooling efficiency with a same water inlet temperature are conducted firstly. Results show that there exists energy-saving potentials of the water evaporated rate, cooling performances and the pump power for different schemes. Based on the practical boundary conditions, including those of weather data, operation hours and market factors, optimal operation strategies of hybrid cooling ar... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Conversion, thermal management, thermoelectric generators, waste heat recovery
With the fast evolution in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (e.g., CO2, N2O) caused by fossil fuel combustion and global warming, climate change has been identified as a critical threat to the sustainable development of human society, public health, and the environment. To reduce GHG emissions, besides minimizing waste heat production at the source, an integrated approach should be adopted for waste heat management, namely, waste heat collection and recycling. One solution to enable waste heat capture and conversion into useful energy forms (e.g., electricity) is employing solid-state energy converters, such as thermoelectric generators (TEGs). The simplicity of thermoelectric generators enables them to be applied in various industries, specifically those that generate heat as the primary waste product at a temperature of several hundred degrees. Nevertheless, thermoelectric generators can be used over a broad range of temperatures for various applications; for example, at low tempe... [more]

Keywords: multi-machine stability, participation analysis, PSS tuning, s-domain analysis, time-domain analysis
One of the main characteristics of power systems is keeping voltages within given limits, done by implementing fast automatic voltage regulators (AVR), which can raise generator voltage (i.e., excitation voltage) in a short time to ceiling voltage limits while simultaneously affecting the damping component of the synchronous generator electromagnetic torque. The efficient way to increase damping in the power system is to implement a power system stabilizer (PSS) in the excitation circuit of the synchronous generator. This paper proposes an enhanced algorithm for PSS tuning in the multimachine system. The algorithm is based on the analysis of system participation factors and the pole placement method while respecting the time domain behavior of the system after being subdued with a small disturbance. The observed time-domain outputs, namely active power, speed, and rotor angle of the synchronous generator, have been classified and validated with proposed weight functions based on the mi... [more]

Keywords: brake-by-wire, braking cycle tests, lumped-parameters thermal network, phase-split LPTN, PM synchronous machines, short-time overload, smart actuators, thermal modeling
Thermal analysis represents a key factor in electrical machine design due to the impact of temperature increase on insulation lifetime. In this context, there has been a wide investigation on thermal modeling, particularly for machines used in harsh working conditions. In this perspective, brake-by-wire (BBW) systems represent one of the most challenging applications for electrical machines used for automotive smart actuators. Indeed, electro-actuated braking systems are required to repeatedly operate the electric machine in high overload conditions in order to limit the actuator response time, as well as to enhance gravimetric and volumetric specific performance indexes. Moreover, BBW systems often impose unconventional supply conditions to the electric machine, consisting of dc currents in three-phase windings to keep the rotor fixed during the braking intervals. However, a dc supply leads to uneven temperature distributions in the machine, and simplified thermal models may not accur... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bayesian Inference, energy signature, open data, uncertainties, urban energy modeling
Cities take a central place in today’s energy landscape. Urban Buildings Energy Modeling (UBEM) is identified as a promising approach for energy planning and optimization in cities and districts. It generally relies on the use of Building Archetypes, i.e., simplified deterministic models for categorized building typologies. However, this implies large assumptions which may accumulate and induce significant bias on energy consumption estimates. In this work, we address this issue with static stochastic models whose parameters are inferred over national thermo-energy data using Bayesian Inference. We analyze inference results and validate them with a panel of standard indicators. Then, we provide comparative results with deterministic building archetypes and stock data from the TABULA European project. Comparisons between heat loss coefficients show relative coherence between building categories, but highlight some significant bias between both approaches. This bias is also shown in the... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: E-CVT, gerotor pump, hybrid transmission, oil supply system
Electric continuously variable transmission (E-CVT) is a vital part of the automobile in order to enhance the power coupling. The oil pump is an important power source component in the hybrid transmission system. Its efficiency exerts a significant impact on the efficiency of the oil supply system and even the hybrid transmission system. In this study, a gerotor pump is designed in line with the requirements of a certain type of hybrid electric vehicle. A Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the rotor tooth profile. The proportional-derivative (PD) control of the oil supply system was realized to lower the functional error of the oil supply system based on the AMESim simulation platform. In addition, the prototype test was performed to verify the rationality of the design.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biofuels, enzymatic hydrolysis, lignocellulosic biomass, simultaneous fermentation
The aim of this research is to examine the effect of lignocellulosic biomass detoxification on the efficiency of the methane fermentation process. Both for corn straw and rye straw, the methane yield was expressed per volume of fermentation medium and per mass of volatile solids (VS) added. Lignocellulosic biomass was subjected of thermo-chemical and enzymatic sequential pretreatments. It was found that methane yield was higher by 22% when using the detoxification process. In these variants, CH4 yield was 18.86 L/L for corn straw and 17.69 L/L for rye straw; while methane yield expressed per mass of VS added was 0.31 m3/kg VS for corn straw and 0.29 m3/kg VS for rye straw. The inclusion of a detoxification step in pretreatments of biomass lignocellulosic increases the degree of organic substance decomposition and enhances methane yield. The results show that a two-step pretreatment, alkaline/enzymatic with a detoxification process, is necessary for the effective generation of high meth... [more]

Keywords: electrified railway, Fourier transform, harmonic resonance, overvoltage, power quality, traction power supply
Harmonic resonances are part of the power quality (PQ) problems of electrified railways and have serious consequences for the continuity of service and integrity of components in terms of overvoltage stress. The interaction between traction power stations (TPSs) and trains that causes line resonances is briefly reviewed, showing the dependence on infrastructure conditions. The objective is monitoring of resonance conditions at the onboard pantograph interface, which is new with respect to the approaches proposed in the literature and is equally applicable to TPS terminals. Voltage and current spectra, and derived impedance and power spectra, are analyzed, proposing a compact and efficient method based on short-time Fourier transform that is suitable for real-time implementation, possibly with the hardware available onboard for energy metering and harmonic interference monitoring. The methods are tested by sweeping long recordings taken at some European railways, covering cases of longe... [more]

Keywords: CNN, gas transport network, Landsat 5, pipeline detection, U-Net
Energy system modeling is essential in analyzing present and future system configurations motivated by the energy transition. Energy models need various input data sets at different scales, including detailed information about energy generation and transport infrastructure. However, accessing such data sets is not straightforward and often restricted, especially for energy infrastructure data. We present a detection model for the automatic recognition of pipeline pathways using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to address this lack of energy infrastructure data sets. The model was trained with historical low-resolution satellite images of the construction phase of British gas transport pipelines, made with the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper instrument. The satellite images have been automatically labeled with the help of high-resolution pipeline route data provided by the respective Transmission System Operator (TSO). We have used data augmentation on the training data and trained our mo... [more]
