Analysis of Power Bank Quality Criteria That Are Important from the Consumer’s Point of View
Jacek Czerniak, Anna Gacek, Przemysław Szopa
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accumulators, Li-ion, Li-Po, power banks, quality
Consumers of mobile devices expect manufacturers to produce devices that will be an efficient source of electric energy. The batteries currently used in smartphones allow the devices to operate for several hours. Power banks extend the operating time of the device without the need to charge via a charger connected to the mains. The present paper defines first the features of power banks that are the most important for users and, moreover, what knowledge or opinions about important power bank features customers use during purchase. As shown in the survey, according to the respondents, the most important feature determining the quality of a power bank is its capacity. It has been shown in this research that the actual capacity of a power bank is circa 2/3 of the capacity indicated. What have also been investigated are the differences between the average capacities of power banks with Li-ion batteries and the technologically newer Li-Po batteries, in favor of the latter. Power banks were... [more]
Development of a Multi-Segment Parallel Compressor Model for a Boundary Layer Ingesting Fuselage Fan Stage
Jonas Voigt, Jens Friedrichs
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: boundary layer ingestion, fan performance, parallel compressor model
The present methodological study aims to assess boundary layer ingestion (BLI) as a promising method to improve propulsion efficiency. BLI utilizes the low momentum inflow of the wing or fuselage boundary layer for thrust generation in order to minimize the required propulsive power for a given amount of thrust for wing or fuselage-embedded engines. A multi-segment parallel compressor model (PCM) is developed to calculate the power saving from full annular BLI as occurring at a fuselage tail center-mounted aircraft engine, employing radially subdivided fan characteristics. Applying this methodology, adverse effects on the fan performance due to varying inlet distortions depending on flight operating point as well as upstream boundary layer suction can be taken into account. This marks one step onto a further segmented PCM model for general cases of BLI-induced inlet distortion and allows the evaluation of synergies between combined BLI and active laminar flow control as a drag reductio... A Study on the Predictive Maintenance Algorithms Considering Load Characteristics of PMSMs to Drive EGR Blowers for Smart Ships
Sung-An Kim
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: exhaust gas recirculation blower, Fault Detection, life prediction, permanent magnet synchronous motor, predictive maintenance, smart ship
Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a NOx reduction technology that can meet stringent environmental regulatory requirements. EGR blower systems must be used to increase the exhaust gas pressure at a lower rate than the scavenging air pressure. Electric motor drive systems are essential to rotate the EGR blowers. For the effective management of the EGR blower systems in smart ships, there is a growing need for predictive maintenance technology fused with information and communication technology (ICT). Since an electric motor accounts for about 80% of electric loads driven by the EGR, it is essential to apply the predictive maintenance technology of the electric motor to maximize the reliability and operation time of the EGR blower system. Therefore, this paper presents the predictive maintenance algorithm to prevent the stator winding turn faults, which is the most significant cause of the electrical failure of the electric motors. The proposed algorithm predicts the remaining useful li... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: desalination, nanoparticles, photothermal boiling, solar desalination
Due to the high light absorption and the possibility of localizing boiling to the interior of the receiver, nanoparticles are promising for solar-driven desalination. The paper presents an experimental study of the nanoparticle-based photothermal boiling of water with sea salt. The experiments were carried out using a laboratory-scale system with a transparent photothermal receiver of light and a closed condensate cycle. In this study, we tested three types of nanoparticles: multiwall carbon nanotubes with two main sizes of 49 nm and 72 nm, 110 nm iron oxide particles Fe3O4, and a commercial paste based on carbon nanotubes. The concentration of nanoparticles was varied up to 10% wt. We found that the nanoparticles enhance the steam generation by 23%, relative to a conventional desalinator with a black-body receiver. The best result was obtained for the 5% wt. concentration of carbon nanotubes.
Enhancement of the Flickermeter for Grid-Connected Wind Turbines
Chau-Shing Wang, Wen-Ren Yang, Yi-Cheng Hsu
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: IEC standard, voltage flicker, voltage fluctuation, wind turbine
Distributed generators connected to the power system usually produce voltage fluctuations. For wind turbines connected to a grid, large changes in wind speed can cause voltage flicker at the point of common coupling. The measurement of voltage flicker caused only by wind turbines is difficult. The wind turbine under test is usually connected to a medium voltage point, in which other fluctuating loads may produce significant voltage disturbances at the wind turbine terminal where the measurement is made. Although the IEC 61400-21-1 standard specifies a method to evaluate voltage flicker caused by wind turbines, because of the complex algorithm and process of the IEC standard, there is currently a lack of measurement equipment that meets the IEC standard. In addition, some countries that use other voltage flicker standards, such as ΔV10, do not have suitable flicker measurements for wind turbines. Therefore, this study proposes an enhanced version of the IEC 61400-21-1 standard, which in... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon emissions, Generalized Divisia Index Method, influencing factors, logistics industry
Due to increased global carbon dioxide emissions, the greenhouse effect is being aggravated, which has attracted wide attention. China is committed to promoting the low-carbon development of all industries. This paper analyzed the influencing factors of carbon emissions in the Chinese logistics industry, so as to identify the key factors that influence carbon emissions. Based on the carbon emission data of China’s logistics industry in 2000−2019, this paper applied the carbon emission coefficients issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. For the first time, the Generalized Divisia Index Method was used to analyze the degree of influence of the factors on carbon emissions. This method considered more variables and their relationships. The results showed that (1) the carbon emissions of the logistics industry were increased by 3.22 times from 2000 to 2018, and showed negative growth for the first time in 2019; (2) the added value of the logistics industry is the most impo... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computer networks, correspondence analysis, decarbonization of the economy, historically and politically conditioned infrastructural growth poles, molinology, platforms for participation, prosumption, public administration digitalization, renewable energy sources, Warmia and Mazury Province
According to wikinomics, the decarbonization of the economy it is not possible without the involvement of people’s creativity and ingenuity under the form of prosumption channeled into the public administration. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to transform the existing websites of municipal offices into participation platforms that would become the local growth poles concentrating the economic forces operating in a given area. As Adam Smith, the father of economics, noted, synchronization between the economic goals of people and the preferences of local authorities are the main factors of development and the lack of them can create the highest degree of chaos in the economy. Consequently, the research began with defining prosumption and determining the degree of cooperation between society and the public administration sector in the digital sphere. Correspondence analysis was used to analyze the data collected from a survey. The issue of the quality of websites of munici... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: homo p-n junction, HTL-free cells, lead-free, perovskite solar cell, SCAPS simulator
In this work, we report on the effect of substituting the active intrinsic i-layer on a conventional pin structure of lead-free perovskite solar cell (PSC) by a homo p-n junction, keeping the thickness of the active layer constant. It is expected that when the active i-layer is substituted by a p-n homo junction, one can increase the collection efficiency of the photo-generated electrons and holes due to the built-in electric field of the homo junction. The impact of the technological and physical device parameters on the performance parameters of the solar cell have been worked out. It was found that p-side thickness must be wider than the n-side, while its acceptor concentration should be slightly lower than the donor concentration of the n-side to achieve maximum efficiency. In addition, different absorber types, namely, i-absorber, n-absorber and p-absorber, are compared to the proposed pn-absorber, showing a performance-boosting effect when using the latter. Moreover, the proposed... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: borehole heat exchanger (BHE), geographical information system (GIS), ground source heat pump (GSHP), shallow geothermal energy
In order to boost the use of shallow geothermal energy, reliable and sound information concerning its potential must be provided to the public and energy decision-makers, among others. To this end, we developed a GIS-based methodology that allowed us to estimate the resource, energy, economic and environmental potential of shallow geothermal energy at a regional scale. Our method focuses on closed-loop borehole heat exchanger systems, which are by far the systems that are most utilized for heating and cooling purposes, and whose energy demands are similar throughout the year in the study area applied. The resource was assessed based on the thermal properties from the surface to a depth of 100 m, considering the water saturation grade of the materials. Additionally, climate and building characteristics data were also used as the main input. The G.POT method was used for assessing the annual shallow geothermal resource and for the specific heat extraction (sHe) rate estimation for both h... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: density functional theory, hydrogen sensing, palladium
The adsorption characteristics of H2 molecules on the surface of Pd-doped and Pd-decorated graphene (G) have been investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations to explore the sensing capabilities of Pd-doped/decorated graphene. In this analysis, electrostatic potential, atomic charge distribution, 2D and 3D electron density contouring, and electron localization function projection, were investigated. Studies have demonstrated the sensing potential of both Pd-doped and Pd-decorated graphene to H2 molecules and have found that the gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), i.e., the HOMO-LUMO gap (HLG), decreases to 0.488 eV and 0.477eV for Pd-doped and Pd-decorated graphene, respectively. When H2 is adsorbed on these structures, electrical conductivity increases for both conditions. Furthermore, chemical activity and electrical conductivity are higher for Pd-decorated G than Pd-doped G, whereas the char... [more]
Experimental Investigation of Frost Formation Influence on an Air Source Heat Pump Evaporator
Tomas Kropas, Giedrė Streckienė, Juozas Bielskus
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air source heat pump, coefficient of performance (COP), evaporator, frost formation, transitional/cold heating season
The application of heat pumps in the heating systems of buildings in the cold or transitional season is becoming an increasingly common practice not only in Lithuania but in other countries as well. Due to the growing popularity of air-to-air or air-to-water heat pumps in the building sector, the problem of the evaporator heat exchanger freezing is also becoming more and more relevant. As the outdoor temperature drops, so does the heat pump’s coefficient of performance (COP) for heating. The freezing of the evaporator surface increases the energy consumption of the system, has a negative effect on heat exchange, distorts the normal operating cycle of the heat pump and the energy is wasted for defrosting processes. This article describes the experimental investigation of an air-to-water heat pump, presents the results obtained during the experiments and their interfaces. The experiments were carried out during the transitional/cold season. It was found that frost formation on the evapor... [more]
Thermographic Measurement of the Temperature of Reactive Power Compensation Capacitors
Krzysztof Dziarski, Arkadiusz Hulewicz, Grzegorz Dombek
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active power, angular emissivity, capacitor, conditions during thermographic temperature measurement, infrared radiation, reactive power, reflectance radiation, thermography
An excessive increase in reactive power consumption is unfavorable from the point of view of a power system. For this reason, devices compensating reactive power consumption are used. The capacitor is one such device. Capacitors must be tested regularly during their exploitation. One of the activities that should be performed is testing the degree of heating of the cells of a capacitor bank. Thermography can be used to perform such tests. This non-contact method has its limitations. Due to the angular emissivity and the change in the distance between the lens and the object under observation, the temperature measured with a thermographic camera may differ from the actual temperature. This phenomenon is visible on cylindrical capacitor cases. Consequently, depending on the location of the observation point on the capacitor case, the result of the thermographic temperature measurement may be different. To investigate this phenomenon, experimental work has been undertaken.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diode circuit models, grey wolf optimizer, multi neighbors learning, parameter extraction, photovoltaic system
With the increase in the share of solar energy in the sustainable development, accurate parameter identification plays a significant role in designing optimal solar photovoltaic systems. For this purpose, this paper extensively implements and evaluates the grey wolf optimizer with a dimension learning-based hunting search strategy, an improved version of GWO named I-GWO, in the parameter extraction of photovoltaic cells and modules. According to the experimental results, the double-diode model leads to better fitness than the other diode models in representing the physical behaviors of both photovoltaic cells and photovoltaic modules. For further performance validation, firstly, the internal parameters extracted by the I-GWO algorithm and the corresponding output current data are compared with a number of widely-used parameter extraction methods in the literature. Then, the best goodness-of-fit results achieved by the I-GWO algorithm are evaluated considering many state-of-the-art meta... [more]
Generation Expansion Planning with Energy Storage Systems Considering Renewable Energy Generation Profiles and Full-Year Hourly Power Balance Constraints
Radhanon Diewvilai, Kulyos Audomvongseree
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage systems, generation expansion planning, MILP decomposition, power development plan
This paper proposes a methodology to develop generation expansion plans considering energy storage systems (ESSs), individual generation unit characteristics, and full-year hourly power balance constraints. Generation expansion planning (GEP) is a complex optimization problem. To get a realistic plan with the lowest cost, acceptable system reliability, and satisfactory CO2 emissions for the coming decades, a complex multi-period mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model needs to be formulated and solved with individual unit characteristics along with hourly power balance constraints. This problem requires huge computational effort since there are thousands of possible scenarios with millions of variables in a single calculation. However, in this paper, instead of finding the globally optimal solutions of such MILPs directly, a simplification process is proposed, breaking it down into multiple LP subproblems, which are easier to solve. In each subproblem, constraints relating to ren... [more]
From Words to Deeds: The Impact of Pro-Environmental Self-Identity on Green Energy Purchase Intention

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: emotional value, green energy purchase intention, photovoltaic panels, pro-environmental self-identity, social value
This study examines the mechanism by which pro-environmental self-identity (PESI) affects green energy purchase intention (GEPI) through different dimensions of consumption values. The concept of pro-environmental self-identity is rarely discussed in the context of green energy purchase intention. Additionally, the amount of research concerning consumers’ attitudes and behaviours towards photovoltaic panels is limited. We fill this cognitive gap by testing a relation between pro-environmental self-identity and green energy purchase intention. The data collection was carried out based on an indirect method of gathering information—using an online survey. Research was conducted among 250 Polish customers. The partial least squares structural equation modelling technique was applied. The research results show that the relations between PESI and GEPI is mediated totally by social and partially by emotional values. The mediating impact of functional values was not confirmed. The results of... [more]
Environmental Changes Produced by Household Consumption

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic crisis, greenhouse gas emissions, household, input–output analysis
This paper analyzes the impact of the fall in household consumption after an economic crisis in Spain on greenhouse gas emissions. To this end, household consumption is differentiated by the age of the main provider by using a conversion matrix that relates consumption groups to activity sectors. A multisectoral model was used to quantify and compare the environmental impact caused by the consumption of each age group, indicating that the older the age of the main household provider, the smaller the reduction in GHG emissions associated with their consumption. The results facilitate an analysis of how the greenhouse gas emissions of the different sectors of the Spanish economy, associated with the population under study, varied before and after the 2008 crisis, and confirm that the sectors with the greatest reduction in emissions were, in this order, extractive industries, construction, manufacturing industry, wholesale and retail trade and transport and storage. This is relevant for d... [more]
Preparing the Ecuador’s Power Sector to Enable a Large-Scale Electric Land Transport

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Ecuador, electric transport, ELENA, energy modeling, hydropower, urbs
The Ecuador’s expansion plans for the power sector promote the exploitation of hydro power potential, natural gas and a small share of alternative renewable energies. In 2019, electricity generation reached 76.3% from hydroelectric power, 21.9% from thermal plants and 1.8% from other renewable resources. Although the power energy mix is mainly based on renewable technologies, the total energy demand is still dependent on fossil fuels, which is the case of the transport sector that alone accounted for 50% of the total primary energy consumed in the country. This paper analyzes the pathway to develop a clean and diversified electricity mix, covering the demand of three specific development levels of electric transportation. The linear optimization model (urbs) and the Ecuador Land Use and Energy Netwrok Analysis (ELENA) are used to optimize the expansion of the power system in the period from 2020 to 2050. Results show that reaching an electricity mix 100% based on renewable energies is... [more]

Keywords: COVID-19, paired sample t-test, pollutant emission, sustainable transportation, traffic mobility
As in other countries of the world, the Turkish government is implementing many preventive partial and total lockdown practices against the virus’s infectious effect. When the first virus case has been detected, the public authorities have taken some restriction to reduce people and traffic mobility, which has also turned into some positive affect in air quality. To this end, the paper aims to examine how this pandemic affects traffic mobility and air quality in Istanbul. The pandemic does not only have a human health impact. This study also investigates the social and environmental effects. In our analysis, we observe, visualize, compare and discuss the impact of the post- and pre-lockdown on Istanbul’s traffic mobility and air quality. To do so, a geographic information system (GIS)-based approach is proposed. Various spatial analyses are performed in GIS with the statistical data used; thus, the environmental effects of the pandemic can be better observed. We test the hypothesis tha... [more]

Keywords: COMET, decision support system, DSS, MCDM, multi-criteria decision-making, photovoltaic technology, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy, solar panels selection, SPOTIS
This paper aims to present an innovative approach based on two newly developed Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods: COMET combined with TOPSIS and SPOTIS, which could be the basis for a decision support system (DSS) in the problem of selecting solar panels. Solar energy is one of the most promising and environmentally friendly energy sources because of the enormous potential of directly converting available solar radiation everywhere into electricity. Furthermore, ever-lower prices for photovoltaic systems make solar electricity more competitive with power from conventional energy sources, increasing interest in solar panels among companies and households. This fact generates the need for a user-friendly, objective, fully automated DSS to support the multi-criteria selection of solar panels. Both MCDM methods chosen for this purpose are rank-reversal-free and precise. First, the objective entropy weighting method was applied for determining criteria weights. Final rankings we... [more]

Keywords: energy market, market clearing price, modeling of solar, modeling of wind, oppositional based gravitational search algorithm, strategic bidding
Power suppliers in a dynamic power market can achieve full benefit by introducing a bidding strategy mechanism. In the power sector, renewable resources have significant gradual usage and their effect on the production of detailed bidding approaches is becoming further complicated in the industry. Due to the irregular nature of these renewable resources and because they are subject to several fluctuations, there is an inherent issue with generating electricity. Taking these considerations into account, attempts have been made to create a model of bidding strategy to optimize the benefit of the electricity producers using the oppositional gravitational search algorithm. The Weibull and Beta distribution functions are utilized to describe the stochastic characteristics of the wind-speed profile and solar-irradiation, respectively. For the IEEE-30 and IEEE-57 frameworks, the suggested method is being checked and explained. In comparison to other optimization approaches, the results of thi... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EGS, enhanced geothermal systems, HDR, hot dry rock, hydraulic fracturing, rock mechanics
Hydraulic fracturing (HF) is a well-known stimulation method used to increase production from conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs. In recent years, HF has been widely used in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). HF in EGS is used to create a geothermal collector in impermeable or poor-permeable hot rocks (HDR) at a depth formation. Artificially created fracture network in the collector allows for force the flow of technological fluid in a loop between at least two wells (injector and producer). Fluid heats up in the collector, then is pumped to the surface. Thermal energy is used to drive turbines generating electricity. This paper is a compilation of selected data from 10 major world’s EGS projects and provides an overview of the basic elements needed to design HF. Authors were focused on two types of data: geological, i.e., stratigraphy, lithology, target zone deposition depth and temperature; geophysical, i.e., the tectonic regime at the site, magnitudes of the prin... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy optimization, energy simulation, energy system modelling, Multi Energy Systems Simulator (MESS)
Energy system modelling is an essential practice to assist a set of heterogeneous stakeholders in the process of defining an effective and efficient energy transition. From the analysis of a set of open-source energy system models, it emerged that most models employ an approach directed at finding the optimal solution for a given set of constraints. On the contrary, a simulation model is a representation of a system used to reproduce and understand its behaviour under given conditions without seeking an optimal solution. In this paper, a new open-source energy system model is presented. Multi Energy Systems Simulator (MESS) is a modular, multi-energy carrier, multi-node model that allows the investigation of non optimal solutions by simulating an energy system. The model was built for urban level analyses. However, each node can represent larger regions allowing wider spatial scales to be represented as well. In this work, the tool’s features are presented through a comparison between... [more]

Keywords: CO2 reduction, FeI intermediates, Iron N2O2 Schiff base complexes, spectroelectrochemistry
The characterization of competent intermediates of metal complexes, involved in catalytic transformations for the activation of small molecules, is an important target for mechanistic comprehension and catalyst design. Iron complexes deserve particular attention, due to the rich chemistry of iron that allows their application both in oxidation and reduction processes. In particular, iron complexes with tetradentate Schiff base ligands show the possibility to electrochemically generate FeI intermediates, capable of reacting with carbon dioxide. In this work, we investigate the electronic and spectroscopic features of FeI intermediates in five Fe(LN2O2) complexes, and evaluate the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 in the presence of phenol (PhOH) or trifluoroethanol (TFE) as proton donors. The main findings include: (i) a correlation of the potentials of the FeII/I couples with the electronic character of the LN2O2 ligand and the energy of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption o... Keywords: DFIG, direct reactive power control, energy management system, hybrid energy storage system, smart microgrid, supercapacitor, three-level inverter
The present work addresses the modelling, control, and simulation of a microgrid integrated wind power system with Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) using a hybrid energy storage system. In order to improve the quality of the waveforms (voltages and currents) supplied to the grid, instead of a two level-inverter, the rotor of the DFIG is supplied using a three-level inverter. A new adaptive algorithm based on combined Direct Reactive Power Control (DRPC) and fuzzy logic controls techniques is applied to the proposed topology. In this work, two topologies are proposed. In the first one, the active power injected into the grid is smoothened by using an economical hybrid battery and supercapacitor energy storage system. However, in the second one, the excess wind energy is used to produce and store the hydrogen, and then a solid oxide fuel cell system (SOFC) is utilized to regenerate electricity by using the stored hydrogen when there is not enough wind energy.
