Observer Design for a Variable Moment of Inertia System
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: identification, Modelling, nonlinear control, nonlinear observer
Variable moment of inertia systems are common, and a popular laboratory system of this type is the “ball-and-beam”. Such systems are, however, nonlinear and often unstable. Efficient control requires full state information (or at least partial velocities), which are generally difficult to measure. That is why the design of state observers is a relevant problem. In this paper, a new design of an observer is proposed. This new nonlinear observer uses partial output injection and the circle criterion to ensure semiglobal stability. Moreover, we present a complete modeling of the system and systematic testing of the observer in comparison to a baseline in the form of a linear observer. The results show that the designed observer outperforms its linear counterpart and does not impede control.

Exploring the Relationship between Residential CO2 Emissions, Urbanization, Economic Growth, and Residential Energy Consumption: Evidence from the North Africa Region
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ARDL bounds testing, economic growth, North Africa, residential CO2 emissions, Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality tests, urbanization
Rapid urbanization, coupled with income growth, will inevitably cause the residential energy consumption in the North Africa region to continue to increase, with adverse effects on the climate, human health, and the economy. In these regards, this paper explores the relationship between residential carbon dioxide emissions (RCO2), urbanization, economic growth, and residential energy use in four North African countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt) over the period 1990−2016. To do this, we used the bounds cointegration and the Toda−Yamamoto Granger causality test. The existence of cointegration relationships was confirmed for the four countries. In the long run, the environment Kuznets curve relationship between increased income per capita and RCO2 emissions was verified for only Morocco and Tunisia. The causality analysis also reveals a combination of neutral, unidirectional, and bidirectional relationships for all countries. The RCO2 emissions have not proved to be a limitin... [more]

Experimental Validation of Flow Uniformity Improvement by a Perforated Plate in the Heat Exchanger of SFR Steam Generator
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow uniformity, heat exchanger, perforated plate, sodium-cooled fast reactor, steam generator
The steam generator in a nuclear power plant is a type of heat exchanger in which heat transfer occurs from the hot fluid in multiple channels to the cold fluid. Therefore, a uniform flow over multiple channels is necessary to improve heat exchanger efficiency. The study aims at experimentally investigating the improvement of flow uniformity by the perforated plate in the heat exchanger used for a sodium-cooled fast reactor stream generator. A 1/4-scale experimental model for one heat exchanger unit with 33 × 66 channels was manufactured. The working fluid was water. A perforated plate was systematically designed using numerical simulations to improve the flow uniformity over the 33 × 66 channels. As a result, the flow uniformity greatly improved at a slight cost of pressure drop. To validate the numerical results, planar particle image velocimetry measurements were performed on the selected planes in the inlet and outlet headers. The experimental velocity profiles near the exits of th... [more]

Thermodynamic Evaluation of the Forced Convective Hybrid-Solar Dryer during Drying Process of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) Leaves
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy and exergy analysis, energy utilization ratio, exergetic efficiency, hybrid solar drying (HSD), rosemary
This study aimed to examine the energy and exergy indices of the rosemary drying process in a hybrid-solar dryer (HSD) and the effects of air-drying parameters on these thermodynamic indices. Drying experiments were carried out at four levels of air temperature (40, 50, 60, and 70 ∘C) and three levels of air velocity (1, 1.5, and 2 m/s). Energy and exergy were calculated by application of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Based on the principal laws, energy efficiency, exergy losses, and exergetic improvement potential rate, were evaluated. The results showed that the energy utilization ratio (EUR) ranged from 0.246 to 0.502, and energy utilization (EU) ranged from 0.017 to 0.060 (kJ/s). Exergy loss and efficiency varied from 0.009 to 0.028 (kJ/s) and from 35.08% to 78.5%, respectively, and increased with increased temperature and air velocity. It was found that the exergy loss rate was affected by temperature and air velocity because the overall heat transfer coefficient wa... [more]

Energy System Monitoring Based on Fuzzy Cognitive Modeling and Dynamic Clustering
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic clustering, energy system, fuzzy cognitive model, monitoring
A feature of energy systems (ESs) is the diversity of objects, as well as the variety and manifold of the interconnections between them. A method for monitoring ESs clusters is proposed based on the combined use of a fuzzy cognitive approach and dynamic clustering. A fuzzy cognitive approach allows one to represent the interdependencies between ESs objects in the form of fuzzy impact relations, the analysis results of which are used to substantiate indicators for fuzzy clustering of ESs objects and to analyze the stability of clusters and ESs. Dynamic clustering methods are used to monitor the cluster structure of ESs, namely, to assess the drift of cluster centers, to determine the disappearance or emergence of new clusters, and to unite or separate clusters of ESs.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy communities, externalities, hydrogen systems, LCC, NPC, self-consumers’ groups, SOFC
The building sector is one of the key energy consumers worldwide. Fuel cell micro-Cogeneration Heat and Power systems for residential and small commercial applications are proposed as one of the most promising innovations contributing to the transition towards a sustainable energy infrastructure. For the application and the diffusion of these systems, in addition to their environmental performance, it is necessary, however, to evaluate their economic feasibility. In this paper a life cycle assessment of a fuel cell/photovoltaic hybrid micro-cogeneration heat and power system for a residential building is integrated with a detailed economic analysis. Financial indicators (net present cost and payback time are used for studying two different investments: reversible-Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and natural gas SOFC in comparison to a base scenario, using a homeowner perspective approach. Research Progress of Oilfield Development Index Prediction Based on Artificial Neural Networks
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: data mining, intelligent algorithm, neural network, oilfield development index, prediction model
Accurately predicting oilfield development indicators (such as oil production, liquid production, current formation pressure, water cut, oil production rate, recovery rate, cost, profit, etc.) is to realize the rational and scientific development of oilfields, which is an important basis to ensure the stable production of the oilfield. Due to existing oilfield development index prediction methods being difficult to accurately reflect the complex nonlinear problem in the oil field development process, using the artificial neural network, which can predict the oilfield development index with the function of infinitely close to any non-linear function, will be the most ideal prediction method at present. This article summarizes four commonly used artificial neural networks: the BP neural network, the radial basis neural network, the generalized regression neural network, and the wavelet neural network, and mainly introduces their network structure, function types, calculation process and... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acoustic energy, cylinders, energy harvesting, high frequency, piezoelectric, smart materials
The work presented in this paper studies the potential of cylindrical piezoelectric transducers for harvesting high-frequency acoustic energy. The cylinder was made of a modified PZT (lead zirconate titanate) and had the shape of a squared cylinder with a side length of 4 cm and a wall thickness of 1 mm. The study used open-circuit measurements to study the relationship between the sound wavelength and the cylinder size and its effect on the performance of energy harvesting. The cylinder was found to give the best performance at a frequency of 20 kHz. In addition to open-circuit measurements, closed-circuit measurements were performed to demonstrate the ability to dissipate energy harvested from 20 kHz sound waves across an electric load. The load was designed in a series of experimental steps that aimed at optimizing an impedance-matched energy harvester. Finally, the cylinder was tested at the optimized load conditions, and it was possible to harvest and store energy with a power of... [more]

The Nexus of World Electricity and Global Sustainable Development
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, electricity grid, Energy, Hydrogen, renewables, Sustainable Development Goals
The main part of mankind’s ecological footprint is the carbon footprint, a measure of the environmental impact of humanity’s energy release from fossil fuels. The use of fossil fuels will have to change in the forthcoming decades to a largely climate-neutral use of solar energy enabled by dramatic cost reductions for PV and wind energy systems. The impact of this trend on world society has been discussed in a previous paper. In connection with these important technical developments, the role of electricity, its transport and storage will alter in the coming decades, allowing the design and use of larger and larger electricity grids and a parallel use of hydrogen for both storage and energy transport. This will further change the energy landscape of the world. All these developments and their relationship to global sustainable development are elaborated in this cross-disciplinary paper by specifically analyzing whether the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations are an effec... Effects of Bypass Flow Distribution on Cold Flow Characteristics of Integrated Afterburner
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cooling efficiency, distribution of cold flow, flow loss, integrated afterburner, thermal mixing efficiency
Integrated design is a trend in the development of afterburners, and the distribution of cold flow is directly related to their flow field characteristics, combustion organization, and the cooling effect of components. Numerical simulations were performed to illustrate the effects of bypass flow distribution on the flow distribution, mixing characteristics, and cooling efficiency of the components by varying the cooling flow path structure parameters. Within the range of parameters in this study, it can be indicated that with the increase of heat shield inlet height and afterburner annulus height, the total pressure recovery coefficient along the path increased accordingly, and the increasing rate at the afterburner outlet is 1.12% and 1.19%, respectively. The average cooling efficiency of radial flameholder, circumferential flameholder, and fuel injector all decrease, but the rate of decrease varies slightly depending on the location of the components. On the Mathematical Modelling of a Moving-Bed Counter-Current Gasifier Fuelled with Wood-Pellets
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, gasification, mathematical modelling, wood-pellets
The subject of this work is the mathematical modelling of a counter-current moving-bed gasifier fuelled by wood-pellets. Two versions of the model have been developed: the one-dimensional (1D) version-solving a set of Ordinary Differential Equations along the gasifier height-and the three-dimensional (3D) version where the balanced equations are solved using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Unique procedures have been developed to provide unconditionally stable solutions and remove difficulties occurring by using conventional numerical methods for modelling counter-current reactors. The procedures reduce the uncertainties introduced by other mathematical approaches, and they open up the possibility of straightforward application to more complex software, including commercial CFD packages. Previous models of Hobbs et al., Di Blasi and Mandl et al. used a correction factor to tune calculated temperatures to measured values. In this work, the factor is not required. Data-Driven Prognostics of the SOFC System Based on Dynamic Neural Network Models
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: data-driven prognostics, remaining useful life, solid oxide fuel cell
Prognostics technology is important for the sustainability of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system commercialization, i.e., through failure prevention, reliability assessment, and the remaining useful life (RUL) estimation. To solve SOFC system issues, data-driven prognostics methods based on the dynamic neural network (DNN), one of non-linear models, were investigated in this study. Based on DNN model types, the neural network autoregressive (NNARX) model with external inputs, the neural network autoregressive moving average (NNARMAX) model with external inputs, and the neural network output error (NNOE) were utilized to predict the degradation trend and estimate the RUL. First, the degradation trend prediction was executed to evaluate the correctness of the proposed DNN model structures in the first learning phase. Then, the RUL was estimated on the basis of the degradation trend of the NN models in the second inference phase. The comparison test results show the prediction accuracy o... [more]

Public Acceptance and Support of Renewable Energy in the North-East Development Region of Romania
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy policy, European Union, north-east development region of Romania, public opinion, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Romania
Concern about energy in the European Union (EU) has been a recurrent issue from the very beginning. Though initially addressed at the state level, energy is now a shared competency as stressed by article 194 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. New challenges, added from time to time, need public support in order to be properly addressed. Such is the case of substituting traditional energy production with renewable energy sources. Our paper seeks to determine whether the Romanian public opinion favors such an evolution, which is traditionally associated with significant investment efforts. The study is focused on the north-east development region, which has the highest population and registered the fastest economic growth in 2019. The topic was explored through a survey applied to a sample of 649 household respondents. The results suggest strong support for introducing renewable energy sources, serious concerns about climate change, and a preoccupation for energy sav... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: calming of traffic, choker, raised pedestrian crossing, speed reduction, speed tables, Tempo-30 zone, traffic calming measures
The increasing use of road vehicles has caused a number of transport and environmental issues throughout the world. To cope with them, traffic calming schemes are being increasingly implemented in built-up areas. An example of such schemes are Tempo-30 zones. The traffic calming measures applied as part of this scheme must be carefully planned in terms of location and design details in order to obtain the desired reduction in speed, traffic volume and exhaust emissions and, last but foremost, to increase the safety and facilitate the movement of vulnerable road users. The coexistence and combined effect of these measures and their design details must also be taken into account. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the applied traffic calming measures had a considerable bearing on the reduction in speed to the desired level, as assumed in the traffic calming plan. Three street sections starting and ending with different intersection types were chosen to examine the syner... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Ag/Ge/Ag, polymer solar cells, RGB, semitransparent, transmittance
The continuous thin film of silver (Ag) film is important for semitransparent electrodes in polymer solar cells, while the Ag atoms form as non-continuous below a critical thickness. Here, semitransparent inverted polymer solar cells were fabricated using thermally evaporated Ag/germanium (Ge)/Ag as highly transparent electrodes. An ultra-thin Ge film was introduced to modify the growth mode of Ag. The dependence of the device performance and the thickness of the outer Ag film was investigated. Ag/Ge/Ag electrodes exhibited excellent optical and electrical properties, which were proved by the transmittance and reflectance spectra. A champion efficiency of 5.1% was achieved with an open-circuit voltage level of 0.703 V, a short current density of 11.63 mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 63%. The average visible transmittance (300−800 nm) of devices with Ag/Ge/Ag was calculated as 25%.

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: CO2 emissions, cold ironing, environmental externalities, ETS, port electrical grid, shore-to-ship power, social cost of carbon
The technology of cold ironing (or shore-to-ship power) can meaningfully reduce greenhouse gases and air pollutant emissions from ships at the berth by powering the vessels from the electrical shore grid. While cold ironing constitutes an effective and affordable solution in northern Europe and America, economic, legal, and environmental factors still render this technology less attractive in southern Europe. This paper aims to unpack and analyze the economic, regulatory, and environmental factors that can foster cold ironing as a standard installation in the Mediterranean Sea. Based on a model design for the port of Trieste (Italy) as applied to a cluster of target ports in the Adriatic Sea (in Italy, Croatia, and Greece), this article evaluates the cold ironing payback period by comparing costs of shore side-plants with environmental externalities and O&M costs. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hydrogen and fuel, leaching, salt caverns, storage facilities, water jet
For the storage of hydrocarbons, hydrogen, or other products, underground caverns left over from the exploitation of salt deposits, or made specifically for this purpose, are successfully used. This article analyses the effectiveness of currently used well-leaching technologies in terms of the possibility of increasing the speed of obtaining industrial brine, better control of the shape of the created cavern, and, as a result, a shorter production time. An innovative solution was proposed, which consisted of creating appropriate niches in the walls of the leach well using the high-pressure hydrojet technique, just before the start of the sump leaching. A series of numerical simulations of the technologies were performed for various combinations of niche locations along the well, determining the successive phases of the formation of the cavern space at individual stages and the brine concentration increments for the two assumed technology scenarios. Explanations for Wind Turbine Installations: Local and Global Environmental Concerns in the Central Corridor of the United States?
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: globalist, localist worldview, social capital, turbine installation, wind power
Even where physical conditions appear perfectly suited for wind power production, there is significant variation in the number of turbines installed. This pattern suggests that physical conditions are a pre-requisite for, but not a determinant of, that production. This study reports the results of an analysis of the county-level correlates of wind power installations in the north−south corridor of the central United States, which contains much of the country’s greatest land-based wind resources. This study focuses on the relative effects of social capital, global climate change concern, and local biodiversity, while controlling for other potential explanations that previous research has identified as leading to support for or to opposition to turbine installation. We find (1) that greater local biodiversity is associated with fewer turbine installations; (2) that the percent of the public who believe humans are causing climate change is not associated with the number of installed turbi... Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic growth, environmental Kuznets curve, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, spatial spillovers, spatio-temporal Durbin model
The paper presents a spatial approach to the analysis of the relationship between air pollution, economic growth, and renewable energy consumption. The economic growth of every country is based on the energy consumption that leads to an increase in national productivity. Using renewable energy is very important for the environmental protection and security of the earth’s resources. Promoting environmentally friendly operations increases awareness of sustainable development, which is currently a major concern of state governments. In this study, we explored the influence of economic growth and the share of renewable energy out of total energy consumption on CO2 emissions. The study was based on the classical environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and enriched with the spatial dependencies. In particular, we determined the spatial spillovers in the form of the indirect effects of changes in renewable energy consumption of a specific country on the CO2 emissions of neighboring countries. Applicability of Different Double-Layer Models for the Performance Assessment of the Capacitive Energy Extraction Based on Double Layer Expansion (CDLE) Technique
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CapMix, CDLE, electric double layer, modified Donnan, salinity difference energy
Capacitive energy extraction based on double layer expansion (CDLE) is a renewable method of harvesting energy from the salinity difference between seawater and freshwater. It is based on the change in properties of the electric double layer (EDL) formed at the electrode surface when the concentration of the solution is changed. Many theoretical models have been developed to describe the structural and thermodynamic properties of the EDL at equilibrium, e.g., the Gouy−Chapman−Stern (GCS), Modified Poisson−Boltzmann−Stern (MPBS), modified Donnan (mD) and improved modified Donnan (i-mD) models. To evaluate the applicability of these models, especially the rationality and the physical interpretation of the parameters that were used in these models, a series of single-pass and full-cycle experiments were performed. The experimental results were compared with the numerical simulations of different EDL models. The analysis suggested that, with optimized parameters, all the EDL models we exam... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate change, climate resilience, energy modelling, integrated assessment modelling, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), OSeMOSYS, renewable energy integration
Almost all countries have committed to develop Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to reduce GHG emissions. They determine the level of GHG mitigation that, as a nation, they will commit to reducing. Zimbabwe has ambitious and laudable GHG mitigation targets. Compared to a coal-based future, emissions will be reduced by 33% per capita by 2030. If historical climate conditions continue, it can do this at low or negative cost if suitable sources of climate financing are in place. The NDC plots a positive future. However, much of Zimbabwe’s NDC mitigation center on hydropower generation and other measures that are dangerously vulnerable to climate change. Should the climate change in accordance with recent projections, these investments will be at risk, severely constraining electricity supply and causing high degrees of economic damage. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cyber-attacks, dynamic state estimation, hierarchical clustering, Kalman filter, unsupervised learning
The work described in this paper aims to detect and eliminate cyber-attacks in smart grids that disrupt the process of dynamic state estimation. This work makes use of an unsupervised learning method, called hierarchical clustering, in an attempt to create an artificial sensor to detect two different cyber-sabotage cases, known as false data injection and denial-of-service, during the dynamic behavior of the power system. The detection process is conducted by using an unsupervised learning-enhanced approach, and a decision tree regressor is then employed for removing the threat. The dynamic state estimation of the power system is done by Kalman filters, which provide benefits in terms of the speed and accuracy of the process. Measurement devices in utilities and buses are vulnerable to communication interruptions between phasor measurement units and operators, who can be easily manipulated by false data.
