Smart and Renewable Energy System to Power a Temperature-Controlled Greenhouse
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage systems, fuzzy logic controller, greenhouse, Matlab, multi-source power systems, PV plant, SEPIC converter, Simulink, wind plant
This paper presents the modeling and simulation of a Multi-Source Power System (MSPS)—composed of two renewable energy sources and supported by a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)—to supply the ventilation and heating system for a temperature-controlled agricultural greenhouse. The first one is a photovoltaic (PV) generator connected to a DC/AC inverter and the second one is a wind turbine connected to a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). The temperature contribution in the model of the PV generator is deeply studied. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control based on fuzzy logic is used to drive a SEPIC converter to feed the maximum power to the greenhouse actuators. The operation of the actuators (ventilation and heating systems), on the basis of the mismatch between the internal temperature and the reference one, is controlled by a PI controller optimized by fuzzy logic, for more robust results. The simulation of the system is carried out in a Matlab/Simulink envi... [more]

Investigation of the Torque Production Mechanism of Dual-Stator Axial-Field Flux-Switching Permanent Magnet Motors
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: double-side slotting, dual stator axial-field flux-switching permanent magnet (DSAFFSPM) machine, magnetic force (MMF)-permeance model, torque production mechanism
This paper studies the torque production mechanism of the dual-stator axial-field flux-switching permanent magnet (DSAFFSPM) machine. Due to the double-sided slotting design of such topology, more resultant air-gap working harmonics in the air-gap flux density are responsible for the torque production and the stator air-gap permeance is especially considered in the investigation. Based on the magnetic force (MMF)-permeance model, the composition and difference of the air-gap working harmonics are demonstrated. The DSAFFSPM machine torque contributions of the main working harmonics are analyzed theoretically and quantified by finite element analysis (FEA). The influence laws of the parameters on the working harmonics are shown and this effectively improves the motor operation performance. Finally, some experiments on the DSAFFSPM machine are carried out to validate the analytical and FEA results.

A Method for Structure Breaking Point Detection in Engine Oil Pressure Data
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: convergence functions, engine oil pressure data, LHD, machine diagnostics, oil pump wear, statistical analysis
In this paper, a heavy-duty loader operated in an underground mine is discussed. Due to extremely harsh operational conditions, an important maintenance problem is related to engine oil pressure. We have found that when the degradation process appears, the nature of variation of pressure engine oil changes. Following this observation, we have proposed a data analysis procedure for the structure break point detection. It is based on specific data pre-processing and further statistical analysis. The idea of the paper is to transform the data into a nearly monotonic function that describes the variation of machine condition or in the statistical language—change of the regime inside the process. To achieve that goal we proposed an original data processing procedure. The dataset analyzed in the paper covers one month of observation. We have received confirmation that during that period, maintenance service has been done. The purpose of our research was to remove ambiguity related to direct... [more]

Lumped Parameter Model and Electromagnetic Performance Analysis of a Single-Sided Variable Flux Permanent Magnet Linear Machine
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: finite element analysis, flux bridge, flux switching machine, magnetic flux leakage, variable flux machine
A new Single-sided Variable Flux Permanent Magnet Linear Machine with flux bridge in mover core is proposed in this paper. The flux bridge prevents the leakage flux from the mover and converts it into flux linkage, which greatly influences the performance of the machine. First, a lumped parameter model is used to find the suitable coil combination and no-load flux linkage of the proposed machine, which greatly reduces the computational time and drive storage. Secondly, the proposed machine replaces the expensive rare earth permanent magnets with ferrite magnets and provides improved flux controlling capability under variable excitation currents. Multivariable geometric optimization is utilized to optimize the leading design parameters like split ratio, stator pole width, width and height of permanent magnet, flux bridge width, the width of mover’s tooth, and stator slot depth at constant electric and magnetic loading. The optimized design increases the flux linkage by 44.11%, average t... [more]

A Cross-Sectoral Investigation of the Energy−Environment−Economy Causal Nexus in Pakistan: Policy Suggestions for Improved Energy Management
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: CO2 emissions, economic growth, energy–environment–economy, Graph Theoretic Approach, Monte Carlo simulations, nexus
This paper explored the energy−environment−economy (EEE) causal nexus of Pakistan, thereby reporting the causal determinants of the EEE nexus by employing the newly developed modified Peter and Clark (PC) algorithm. The modified PC algorithm was employed to investigate the causal ordering of energy consumption, CO2 emissions and economic growth across Pakistan’s domestic, industrial, transportation and agricultural sectors. An empirical comparison, i.e., following Monte Carlo simulation experiments demonstrates that the proposed modified PC algorithm is superior to the original PC proposition and can differentiate between true and spurious nexus causalities. Our results show that significant causality is running from energy consumption in industrial and agricultural sectors towards economic growth. There is no causal association between energy consumption and economic growth in the domestic and transportation sectors. On the other hand, causality runs from energy consumption in the tra... Influence of the Addition of Silica Nanoparticles on the Compressive Strength of Cement Slurries under Elevated Temperature Condition
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cement slurry, cement stone, improved borehole sealing, mechanical parameters, nanosilica, well cementing
Drilling ever deeper, and thus in increasingly difficult conditions, is associated with restrictive requirements that must be met by cement slurries. This implies the need to use advanced, innovative measures that will significantly improve the performance parameters of the cement slurry and cement stone. Due to its unique properties, an admixture of nanosilica improves the properties of the cement stone and allows for appropriate zone insulation. The article presents the results of strength tests of cement stone samples with the addition of silica nanoparticles deposited in an environment of increased temperature of 90 °C. In all three cases of modification with an admixture of nanosilica (type 1, 2 and 3, concentration 0.5%, 1% and 5%), the cement stone shows an improvement in mechanical properties, which is manifested by an increase in compressive strength. The most homogeneous results of strength measurements are for cement slurries with an admixture of type 3 nanosilica (the highe... [more]

Estimation Method of Greenhouse Gas Reduction for Electrical Energy Storage Based on Load-Leveling Application
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: best-mix solution, EES systems, greenhouse gas, load leveling, optimal operation algorithm
In recent years, there have been several types of energy storage technologies adopted in many different areas, such as peak shaving, frequency regulation, and renewable stabilization applications. Moreover, technologies of high energy and power density are useful for load leveling, power smoothing for renewable energy systems (RESs), and peak shaving for demand management. Under these circumstances, an estimation technique for assessing environmental issues applied to electrical energy storage (EES) systems is essential in order to promote commercialization of EES systems. Therefore, this paper proposes an estimation method for CO2 emission in cases where EES systems are introduced and not introduced. It is essential to evaluate environmental issues in EES systems at operation stages of their life cycle and make an effective contribution to environmental improvement and reduce potential adverse environmental impacts. Thus, this paper deals with an evaluation method for CO2 emission bas... [more]

Water and Energy Efficiency Assessment in Urban Green Spaces
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: irrigation efficiency, landscape water requirement, urban green spaces, water balance, water–energy balance
Urban green spaces can be intensive water and energy consumers in the cities, particularly in water scarce regions. Though a very efficient use of such resources is necessary, tools for assessing both water and energy consumption and efficiency are not available. In this paper, a new methodology based on water and energy balances is developed for assessing the water-use and energy efficiency in urban green spaces. The proposed balances, adapted from those developed for water supply systems, are specifically tailored for accounting for urban green spaces specificities, namely, landscape water requirements, other uses besides irrigation and over irrigation water losses. The methodology is demonstrated in two case studies of different nature and characteristics: a modern garden with a smart irrigation system and an urban park with traditional irrigation system. The results show that the developed water balances allow to estimate and assess the irrigation efficiency over the years and to a... [more]

Performance of Pure Crossflow Heat Exchanger in Sensible Heat Transfer Application
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: correction factors, design graphs, pure cross flow heat exchanger
All process industries involve the usage of heat exchanger equipment and understanding its performance during the design phase is very essential. The present research work specifies the performance of a pure cross flow heat exchanger in terms of dimensionless factors such as number of transfer units, capacity rate ratio, and heat exchanger effectiveness. Steady state sensible heat transfer was considered in the analysis. The matrix approach that was established in the earlier work was used in the study. The results were depicted in the form of charts, tables, and performance equations. It was observed that indeterminately increasing the number of transfer units past a threshold limit provided very marginal improvement in the performance of a pure cross flow heat exchanger. Likewise, flow pattern in a heat exchanger is usually assumed either as mixed or unmixed. However, due to various operating conditions, partially mixed conditions do exist. This work considers partially mixed conditi... [more]

Impact of Fracture Topology on the Fluid Flow Behavior of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbonate reservoir, fracture network topology, permeability, shape factor
Fluid flow modeling of naturally fractured reservoirs remains a challenge because of the complex nature of fracture systems controlled by various chemical and physical phenomena. A discrete fracture network (DFN) model represents an approach to capturing the relationship of fractures in a fracture system. Topology represents the connectivity aspect of the fracture planes, which have a fundamental role in flow simulation in geomaterials involving fractures and the rock matrix. Therefore, one of the most-used methods to treat fractured reservoirs is the double porosity-double permeability model. This approach requires the shape factor calculation, a key parameter used to determine the effects of coupled fracture-matrix fluid flow on the mass transfer between different domains. This paper presents a numerical investigation that aimed to evaluate the impact of fracture topology on the shape factor and equivalent permeability through hydraulic connectivity (f). This study was based on numer... [more]

Numerical Analysis of Minimum Ground Temperature for Heat Extraction in Horizontal Ground Heat Exchangers
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ground heat exchanger, ground temperature, heat extraction, heat pump
In this work, numerical simulation calculations were performed to investigate the minimum ground temperature that occurs when extracting thermal energy in a horizontal ground heat exchanger system in the Central European climate. The influence of ground thermal conductivity, heat flux extracted from the ground, periodic interruptions in the operation of the heat exchanger, periodic supply of heat energy to the ground, relative humidity of the ambient air, evaporation rate coefficient, and convective heat transfer coefficient on the ground minimum temperature were investigated. Based on the simulation, it was found that the high value of ground thermal conductivity favorably affects the operation of the installation with a ground heat exchanger. Both the reduction of the maximum heat flux taken from the ground, as well as periodic interruptions in the operation of the exchanger effectively protects the ground against excessive cooling. Further, it was found that heat supply to the groun... [more]

Design and Modeling of Metallic Bipolar Plates for a Fuel Cell Range Extender
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, design, flow field, fuel cell, metallic plate
Fuel cells, designed for mobile applications, should feature compact and low-weight designs. This study describes a design process that fulfills the specific needs of target applications and the production process. The key challenge for this type of metallic bipolar plate is that the combination of two plates creates three flow fields, namely an anode side, a cathode side, and a coolant. This illustrates the fact that each cell constitutes an electrochemical converter with an integrated heat exchanger. The final arrangement is comprised of plates with parallel and separate serpentine channel configurations. The anode and cathode sides are optimized for operation under dry conditions. The final plate offers an almost perfect distribution of coolant flow over the active area. The high quality of this distribution is almost independent of the coolant mass flow, even if one of the six inlet channels is blocked. The software employed (OpenFOAM and SALOME) is freely available and can be used... [more]

Numerical Analysis of Mixed Convective Heat Transfer from a Square Cylinder Utilizing Nanofluids with Multi-Phase Modelling Approach
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bluff body, heated square cylinder, mixed convection, mixture model, nanofluids
The present study deals with the numerical simulation of mixed convective heat transfer from an unconfined heated square cylinder using nanofluids (Al2O3-water) for Reynolds number (Re) 10−150, Richardson number (Ri) 0−1, and nanoparticles volume fractions (φ) 0−5%. Two-phase modelling approach (i.e., Eulerian-mixture model) is adopted to analyze the flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids. A square cylinder with a constant temperature higher than that of the ambient is exposed to a uniform flow. The governing equations are discretized and solved by using a finite volume method employing the SIMPLE algorithm for pressure−velocity coupling. The thermo-physical properties of nanofluids are calculated from the theoretical models using a single-phase approach. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids are studied for considered parameters and compared with those of the base fluid. Value Proposition of Different Methods for Utilisation of Sugarcane Wastes
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioenergy, Ethanol, mill mud, sugarcane wastes, utilisation, value proposition
There are four main waste products produced during the harvesting and milling process of sugarcane: cane trash, molasses, bagasse and mill mud−boiler ash mixture. This study investigates the value proposition of different techniques currently not being adopted by the industry in the utilisation of these wastes. The study addresses the technical challenges and the environmental impact associated with these wastes and comes up with some recommendations based on the recent findings in the literature. All the biomass wastes such as bagasse, trash (tops) and trash (leaves) have shown great potential in generating higher revenue by converting them to renewable energy than burning them (wet or dry). However, the energy content in the products from all the utilisation methods is less than the energy content of the raw product. This study has found that the most profitable and challenging choice is producing ethanol or ethanol/biogas from these wastes. The authors recommend conducting more rese... [more]

Aging Behavior of Lithium Titanate Battery under High-Rate Discharging Cycle
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aging mechanisms, cycle life, high-rate discharging, lithium titanate battery
The high-rate discharging performance of a lithium titanate battery is one of its main properties. In conditions that require ultra-high-rate discharging, a lithium titanate battery can be discharged continuously at a current of 50 C (50 times of its maximum capacity) or higher. In this paper, we take cylindrical steel shell lithium titanate cells as the research object and perform aging cycles at 66 C on these cells. The ultra-high-rate discharging cycles cause a rapid high-power capacity fading while the available capacity at normal current rate is not affected. The capacity at 66 C decreases to 80% of initial value in 10 cycles. This paper also analyzes the aging process of a lithium titanate battery at high-rate discharging with incremental capacity (IC) analysis, and presents the aging behavior of lithium titanate battery qualitatively, which is inconsistent with existing research. We attribute the aging mechanism of ultra-high-rate discharging cycles to the decrease of ionic mobi... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: closed-loop control, high-pressure common rail, marine diesel engine, real-time simulation model
In this paper, the high-pressure common rail system of the marine diesel engine is taken as case study to establish a real-time simulation model of the high-pressure common rail system that can be used as the controlled object of the control system. On the premise of ensuring accuracy, the real-time simulation should also respond quickly to instructions issued by the control system. Applying Solar PV to Heat Pump and Storage Technologies in Australian Houses
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat pumps, self-consumption, solar photovoltaics, space cooling, space heating, thermal storage
Innovative mechanical services coupled with renewable energy systems are crucial for achieving a net zero energy goal for houses. Conventional systems tend to be vastly oversized because they lack the means to buffer energy flows and are based on peak loads. This paper presents an approach to achieve a net zero energy goal for houses by using a solar PV system, heat pumps, and thermal and electrical storage batteries, all off-the-shelf. Constraining one part of the system and then showing how to manage energy storage and flow is a paradigm shift in sizing. The design is for a modest-sized house built in Melbourne, Australia. The output of a solar photovoltaic array drives a small-scale heat pump to heat water, buffering its energy in a thermal battery to energise a radiant space heating system. Space cooling is provided by a separate heat pump. Through energy storage in electrical and thermal batteries, it is possible to meet the electricity, heating and cooling needs of the house for... Optimal Sizing of Energy Storage System for Operation of Wind Farms Considering Grid-Code Constraints
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: grid-code constraints, Optimization, sizing of energy storage system, wind farm operation
Transmission system operators impose several grid-code constraints on large-scale wind farms to ensure power system stability. These constraints may reduce the net profit of the wind farm operators due to their inability to sell all the power. The violation of these constraints also results in an imposition of penalties on the wind farm operators. Therefore, an operation strategy is developed in this study for optimizing the operation of wind farms using an energy storage system. This facilitates wind farms in fulfilling all the grid-code constraints imposed by the transmission system operators. Specifically, the limited power constraint and the reserve power constraint are considered in this study. In addition, an optimization algorithm is developed for optimal sizing of the energy storage system, which reduces the total operation and investment costs of wind farms. All parameters affecting the size of the energy storage systems are also analyzed in detail. This analysis allows the wi... [more]

Separation of the Mixture 2-Propanol + Water by Heterogeneous Azeotropic Distillation with Isooctane as an Entrainer
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2-propanol, alcohols, azeotropes, Biofuels, dehydration, heterogeneous azeotropic distillation, isooctane, Water
Advanced processes, which are alternatives to ordinary distillation, are essential to dehydrate azeotropic alcoholic mixtures for biofuel production. In that regard, this work focuses on the analysis of heterogeneous azeotropic distillation for the separation of a 2-propanol + water mixture in order to recover the alcohol with a sufficiently low water content. By comparing the performances of various entrainers on the basis of ternary maps, isooctane was selected for further process analysis. An advantage it poses is related to the fact that traces of it within the recovered dehydrated alcohol are highly welcome with a view to its subsequent use as a fuel. Aspen Plus® V11 software was employed for the simulation of the process, thus filling the gap existing in the literature due to the lack of studies on the process analysis of the heterogeneous azeotropic distillation of the 2-propanol + water system using isooctane as an entrainer.

Noise Reduction Design with Trapezoidal Back-EMF and Asymmetric Air-Gap for Single-Phase BLDC Refrigerator Cooling Fan Motor
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: asymmetric air-gap, claw-pole motor, fast Fourier transform, noise reduction design, single-phase BLDC motor, trapezoidal back-EMF
In this study, a novel method for reducing the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors employed as refrigerator fan blowers is proposed. A single-phase claw-pole motor has the advantages of low manufacturing cost, easy manufacturing, and a high number of turns. However, in such motors, current delays occur owing to a high inductance; therefore, it is necessary to merge the back-electromotive force and current phases into the same phase using the phase advance method. Additionally, a single-phase motor exhibits dead torque and zero torque at an electrical angle of 180° owing to its electrical characteristics, and the dead torque deteriorates the average torque and torque ripple characteristics of the motor. In this study, a novel method is proposed to make the air gap asymmetrical by tilting the claw to reduce the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors. An asymmetric air gap allows the cogging torque to eliminate the dead torque caused by alignment torques, causing th... [more]
