Investigation of Heat Transfer in a Large-Scale External Heat Exchanger with Horizontal Smooth Tube Bundle
Artur Blaszczuk, Szymon Jagodzik
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bed-to-tube heat transfer coefficient, dense fluidized bed, external heat exchanger, horizontal tube bundle, packed-renewal theory
In the research work, energy transport between a dense fluidized bed and submerged horizontal tube bundle is analyzed in the commercial external heat exchanger (EHE). In order to investigate the heat transfer behavior, the authors carried out eight performance tests in a fluidized bed heat exchange chamber with a cross-section of 2.7 × 2.3 m in depth and width and a height of 1.3 m. The authors have been developing a mechanistic model for the prediction of the average heat transfer coefficient, which includes the effect of the geometric structure of the tube bundle and the location of the heat transfer surface on the heat transfer rate. The computational results depict that the average heat transfer coefficient is essentially affected by superficial gas velocity and suspension density rather than bed particle size. The empirical correlations have been proposed for predicting heat transfer data since the existing literature data is not sufficient for industrial fluidized bed heat exchan... [more]

Keywords: adaptive Kriging meta-model, cryogenic cooling circuit, ITER Central Solenoid Magnet, Loss-of-Flow Accident, precursors, Proper Orthogonal Decomposition, Spectral Clustering
In the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, plasma is magnetically confined with Superconductive Magnets (SMs) that must be maintained at the cryogenic temperature of 4.5 K by one or more Superconducting Magnet Cryogenic Cooling Circuits (SMCCC). To guarantee cooling, Loss-of-Flow Accidents (LOFAs) in the SMCCC are to be avoided. In this work, we develop a three-step methodology for the prompt detection of LOFA precursors (i.e., those combinations of component failures causing a LOFA). First, we randomly generate accident scenarios by Monte Carlo sampling of the failures of typical SMCCC components and simulate the corresponding transient system response by a deterministic thermal-hydraulic code. In this phase, we also employ quick-running Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD)-based Kriging metamodels, adaptively trained to reproduce the output of the long-running code, to decrease the computational time. Second, we group the generated scenarios by a Spectral Clustering (S... [more]
Impact of the Energy Sector on the Quality of the Environment in the Opinion of Energy Consumers from Southeastern Poland
Krzysztof Kud, Marian Woźniak, Aleksandra Badora
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy sector, environmental quality, nuclear energy, renewable energy sources (RES), southeastern Poland
Limiting CO2 emissions has been adopted as a contemporary challenge and introduced into numerous global and regional policies. The measures taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions largely relate to the decarbonization of the economy. Changes in the Polish energy sector are a huge challenge because the energy mix is dominated by the energy derived from coal combustion. Decarbonizing the energy sector will require significant financial resources. Therefore, several questions arise: What is the social attitude to the planned changes? How do residents treat the issue of greenhouse gases? Do they perceive the relationship between energy production and the quality of the natural environment? What are their expectations regarding the transformation of the energy sector? The aim of this study was to identify the opinion of the inhabitants of southeastern Poland on changes in the energy sector and its impact on the quality of the natural environment. The study was conducted at the turn of 2020... [more]
Determining Information Quality in ICT Systems
Marek Stawowy, Stanisław Duer, Jacek Paś, Wojciech Wawrzyński
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: information and communication technologies (ICT), information quality (IQ), Modelling, uncertainty
The article deals with the estimation of information quality (IQ) in information and communication technologies (ICT) systems. A number of recent publications were analyzed, as well as ISO standards concerning quality and information quality. Due to the limitations of the known methods of estimating IQ, the authors present their own proprietary concept based on multidimensional and multi-layer modeling using methods of estimating uncertainty. The modeling proposed in this publication uses sixteen dimensions of quality known from the literature. The features of dimensions are taken into account as another layer and information states as successive steps in the IQ model. An example of calculations is also presented in which the mathematical evidence method used in estimating the uncertainty is extended to the modeling of dependent elements. The article also presents a simulation based on the presented example. This simulation shows the assumed dependencies between the output and input va... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: detailed chemistry, Direct Numerical Simulation, methane–air flame, simple chemistry, turbulent premixed combustion
In the present study, flame propagation statistics from turbulent statistically planar premixed flames obtained from simple and detailed chemistry, three-dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations, were evaluated and compared to each other. To this end, a new database was established encompassing five different conditions on the turbulent premixed combustion regime diagram, using nearly identical numerical methods and the same initial and boundary conditions. A detailed discussion of the advantages and limitations of both approaches is provided, including the difference in carbon footprint for establishing the database. It is shown that displacement speed statistics and their interrelation with curvature and tangential strain rate are in very good qualitative and reasonably good quantitative agreement between simple and detailed chemistry Direct Numerical Simulations. Hence, it is concluded that simple chemistry simulations should retain their importance for future combustion research, a... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy sharing community, heat pump, self-sufficiency, simultaneous cooling and heating, thermal and electric prosumer
Due to the wide-spread use of photovoltaic (PV) systems, interest regarding economic benefit and energy-sharing from surplus electricity has been raised. In this study, decentralized thermal and electric convergence energy prosumers for an energy-sharing community are proposed. For the convergence energy system, a simultaneous heating and cooling heat pump (SHCHP) system integrated with a thermal network is proposed, and the energy performance and operating energy savings of the proposed system were investigated. A smart village located in the Busan Eco Delta Smart City was selected as a case study for the simulation analysis. Experimental data of the heat pump system were used to analyze the SHCHP. The analysis results showed that the proposed system could provide over 53% and 86% of the load cover and supply cover factors, respectively. The proposed system can earn economic benefits, such as energy trading from the surplus electricity of PV systems and thermal energy produced by an S... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: constructal theory, entropy generation rate, generalized thermodynamic optimization, marine condenser, multi-objective optimization, pumping power
A marine condenser with exhausted steam as the working fluid is researched in this paper. Constructal designs of the condenser are numerically conducted based on single and multi-objective optimizations, respectively. In the single objective optimization, there is an optimal dimensionless tube diameter leading to the minimum total pumping power required by the condenser. After constructal optimization, the total pumping power is decreased by 42.3%. In addition, with the increase in mass flow rate of the steam and heat transfer area and the decrease in total heat transfer rate, the minimum total pumping power required by the condenser decreases. In the multi-objective optimization, the Pareto optimal set of the entropy generation rate and total pumping power is gained. The optimal results gained by three decision methods in the Pareto optimal set and single objective optimizations are compared by the deviation index. The optimal construct gained by the TOPSIS decision method correspondi... [more]
Obtaining Robust Performance of a Current fed Voltage Source Inverter for Virtual Inertia Response in a Low Short Circuit Ratio Condition
Clint Z. Ally, Erik C. W. de Jong
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current fed inverter, robust control, virtual inertia, weak grid
Low inertia levels are typical in island power systems due to the relatively small rotational generation. Displacing rotational generation units with static inertia-less PV power results in a significant increase in the frequency volatility. Virtual inertia provided by inverter-storage systems can resolve this issue. However, a low short circuit ratio (SCR) at the point of common coupling together with a fast phase locked loop (PLL) will compromise the response performance of the system. To address this issue, a robust PI controller (RPI) for the inner current-loop of a current fed grid-connected inverter is proposed. The PLL disturbance and grid impedance are incorporated into a single model and recast to a generalized representation of the system, thereby allowing easy tuning of the RPI by the mixed sensitivity H∞ method. The performance of the RPI is compared with that of a PI controller (PI) tuned by the regular loop-shaping method. The results show that when the SCR is above 10, t... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Cramér’s V coefficient, drain water heat recovery, greywater heat recovery, heuristics, measure of association, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland, survey research
In Poland, domestic hot water is heated mainly using fossil fuel energy sources. Such an approach results in the depletion of natural resources, pollution of the atmosphere and, consequently, irreversible changes to the climate. In response to this problem, this research identified the factors that most determine energy savings for heating water in residential buildings, as well as those that affect the choice of an alternative energy source. Additionally, the possibility of implementing shower heat exchangers in existing and newly built residential buildings was assessed, as well as society’s willingness to use such devices. The research was carried out on a sample of 462 inhabitants of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship (Poland). A questionnaire survey was used as a tool. The conducted research has shown that the perspective of environmental protection is not a sufficient motivator to save energy for heating domestic hot water. It is necessary to implement appropriate programs aimed at inf... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biosorption, brewing industry, Cd(II) ions, kinetics, residual brewer’s grains, water quality
Post-production waste generated in the brewing industry was used to analyze the possibility of Cd(II) ion recovery in biosorption processes. Brewer’s grains (BG), which are waste products from beer manufacturing processes, are a promising material that can be reused for biosorption. The biomass contains appropriate functional groups from fats, proteins, raw fibers, amino acids, carbohydrates and starch, showing a strong affinity for binding metal ions and their removal from wastewater. The biosorbent material was characterized by several research methods, such as particle size distribution, elemental composition and mapping using SEM-EDX analysis, specific surface area and pore volume (BET, BJH), thermogravimetry, electrokinetic zeta potential, SEM morphology and FT-IR spectrometry. Initial and equilibrium pH, adsorbent dosage, initial metal concentration and contact time were parameters examined in the research. The highest biosorption efficiency was obtained at a level of 93.9%. Kine... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 injectivity, CO2 sequestration, contact angle, sandstone, wettability
Wettability is one of the main parameters controlling CO2 injectivity and the movement of CO2 plume during geological CO2 sequestration. Despite significant research efforts, there is still a high uncertainty associated with the wettability of CO2/brine/rock systems and how they evolve with CO2 exposure. This study, therefore, aims to measure the contact angle of sandstone samples with varying clay content before and after laboratory core flooding at different reservoir pressures, of 10 MPa and 15 MPa, and a temperature of 323 K. The samples’ microstructural changes are also assessed to investigate any potential alteration in the samples’ structure due to carbonated water exposure. The results show that the advancing and receding contact angles increased with the increasing pressure for both the Berea and Bandera Gray samples. Moreover, the results indicate that Bandera Gray sandstone has a higher contact angle. The sandstones also turn slightly more hydrophobic after core flooding, in... [more]
A Framework and Baseline for the Integration of a Sustainable Circular Economy in Offshore Wind
Anne P. M. Velenturf
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, energy transition, low-carbon infrastructure, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, resource and waste management, resource efficiency, sustainable development, wind energy
Circular economy and renewable energy infrastructure such as offshore wind farms are often assumed to be developed in synergy as part of sustainable transitions. Offshore wind is among the preferred technologies for low-carbon energy. Deployment is forecast to accelerate over ten times faster than onshore wind between 2021 and 2025, while the first generation of offshore wind turbines is about to be decommissioned. However, the growing scale of offshore wind brings new sustainability challenges. Many of the challenges are circular economy-related, such as increasing resource exploitation and competition and underdeveloped end-of-use solutions for decommissioned components and materials. However, circular economy is not yet commonly and systematically applied to offshore wind. Circular economy is a whole system approach aiming to make better use of products, components and materials throughout their consecutive lifecycles. The purpose of this study is to enable the integration of a sust... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air source heat pumps, demand-controlled ventilation, energy efficiency improvement, energy efficiency measures, energy management
The paper analyzes and compares the perspectives for reducing the energy consumption associated to the operation of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning system for climatic control of large-size non-residential buildings. Three different control strategies are considered comparing the use of boiler and heat pumps as heating systems and analyzing the use of demand-controlled ventilation, operating on the effective occupancy of the building. The control strategies are applied to two different educational buildings with shapes representative of typical educational structures. The results of the analysis show how the energy consumption can be reduced up to 70%, shifting from the actual values of the energy intensity of over 300 kWh/m2 for year to values of less than 100 kWh/m2 per year. The significance of the energy savings achieved in such different buildings has led to the identification of a possible benchmark for HVAC systems in the next future years which could help reach the env... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: explicit model predictive control, multi-parameter quadratic programming, perturbed piecewise affine systems, real-time control, turboshaft engine limit protection
The traditional model predictive control (tMPC) algorithms have a large amount of online calculation, which makes it difficult to apply them directly to turboshaft engine−rotor systems because of real time requirements. Therefore, based on the theory of the perturbed piecewise affine system (PWA) and multi-parameter quadratic programming explicit model predictive control (mpQP-eMPC) algorithm, we develop a controller design method for turboshaft engine−rotor systems, which can be used for engine steady-state, transient state and limit protection control. This method consists of two steps: controller offline design and online implementation. Firstly, the parameter space of the PWA system is divided into several partitions offline based on the disturbance and performance constraints. Each partition has its own control law, which is in the form of piecewise affine linear function between the controller and the parameters. The control laws for those partitions are also obtained in this off... [more]

Keywords: breeding blanket, liquid metal technology, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), MHD pressure drop, RELAP5, system codes
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) phenomena, due to the interaction between a magnetic field and a moving electro-conductive fluid, are crucial for the design of magnetic-confinement fusion reactors and, specifically, for the design of the breeding blanket concepts that adopt liquid metals (LMs) as working fluids. Computational tools are employed to lead fusion-relevant physical analysis, but a dedicated MHD code able to simulate all the phenomena involved in a blanket is still not available and there is a dearth of systems code featuring MHD modelling capabilities. In this paper, models to predict both 2D and 3D MHD pressure drop, derived by experimental and numerical works, have been implemented in the thermal-hydraulic system code RELAP5/MOD3.3 (RELAP5). The verification and validation procedure of the MHD module involves the comparison of the results obtained by the code with those of direct numerical simulation tools and data obtained by experimental works. As relevant examples, RELAP5 is... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: current control, inverters, photovoltaic system, pulse width modulation
This study presents a novel switching scheme for three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverters. The proposed switching method independently drives the upper- and lower-arm elements of the inverter based on the polarity information of the reference current. The proposed switching scheme does not require the inclusion of dead-time for each switching, except when the current polarity changes. Therefore, unlike the conventional inverter switching method, dead-time compensation is not needed, and the possibility of an arm-short accident is prevented. In this study, a switching procedure is detailed, and the operation mode analysis of the proposed switching scheme is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed switching method is verified experimentally by application to a grid-connected inverter that requires inverter current control.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: mass balance, photovoltaic panel, pilot scale, recycling process
A quantitative assessment of the material flux emerging from a pilot plant for the treatment of end-of-life photovoltaic panel waste was reported. The process included the manual dismantling of aluminum frames, mechanical treatment for size reduction, and the physical treatment of the milled materials for the release of coarse glass from the encapsulant polymer. Demonstration activities were performed using 1 ton of Si-, 1 ton of CdTe-, and 1 ton of CIGS-based photovoltaic panels (investigated separately), confirming the ability of the process to treat different photovoltaic technologies. The characterization of the input materials was performed and compared with previous literature data. The major bottleneck in the definition of an effective process option for the treatment of different panel technologies was emphasized by the high heterogeneity reported. Mass balances for the proposed process were derived by the recovered material flow. It was highlighted that in processes based on m... [more]
The Digital Twin Realization of an Ejector for Multiphase Flows

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ejector, multiphase flow, Swarm Intelligence algorithms
Despite the extensive use of ejectors in the process industry, it is complex to predict suction and motive fluids mixture characteristics, especially with multiphase flows, even if, in most cases, mixture pressure control is necessary to satisfy process requirements or to avoid performance problems. The realization of an ejector model can allow the operators to overcome these difficulties to have real-time control of the system performance. In this context, this work proposes a framework for developing a Digital Twin of an ejector installed in an experimental plant able to predict the future state of an item and the impact of negative scenarios and faults diagnosis. ANNs have been identified as the most used tool for simulating the multiphase flow ejector. Nevertheless, the complexity in defining their structure and the computational effort to train and use them are not suitable for realizing standalone applications onboard the ejector. The proposed paper shows how Swarm Intelligence a... [more]

Keywords: fracture mechanism, low thermal impedance packaging, porosity, sintered silver, thermal mechanical reliability design
This paper investigates the degradation mechanism of pressure-sintered silver (s-Ag) film for silicon carbide (SiC) chip assembly with a 2-millimeter-thick copper substrate by means of thermal shock test (TST). Two different types of silver paste, nano-sized silver paste (NP) and nano-micron-sized paste (NMP), were used to sinter the silver film at 300 °C under a pressure of 60 MPa. The mean porosity (p) of the NP and MNP s-Ag films was 2.4% and 8%, respectively. The pore shape of the NP s-Ag was almost spherical, whereas the NMP s-Ag had an irregular shape resembling a peanut shell. After performing the TST at temperatures ranging from −40 to 150 °C, the scanning acoustic tomography (SAT) results suggested that delamination occurs from the edge of the assembly, and the delamination of the NMP s-Ag assembly was faster than that of the NM s-Ag assembly. The NMP s-Ag assembly showed a random delamination, indicating that the delamination speed varies from place to place. The difference i... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aeronautics, clustering, data labeling, deep learning, electromechanical actuator, kernel density estimation, prognosis and health management, semantic segmentation, time series
The aerospace industry develops prognosis and health management algorithms to ensure better safety on board, particularly for in-flight controls where jamming is dreaded. For that, vibration signals are monitored to predict future defect occurrences. However, time series are not labeled according to severity level, and the user can only assess the system health from the data mining procedure. To that extent, a clustering algorithm using a deep neural network core is developed. Time series are encoded into pictures to be fed into an artificially trained neural network: U-NET. From the segmented output, one-dimensional information on cluster frontiers is extracted and filtered without any parameter selection. Then, a kernel density estimation finally transforms the signal into an empirical density. Ultimately, a Gaussian mixture model extracts the latter independent components. The method empowered us to reveal different degrees of severity faults in the studied data, with their respecti... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: back reflector, DSSC, dye-sensitized solar cell, enediol group, light trapping, organic dye
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated using a photoelectrode covered by a porous layer of titanium dioxide, platinum counter electrode, iodide/triiodide electrolyte and three different dyes: phenylfluorone (PF), pyrocatechol violet (PCV) and alizarin (AL). After the adsorption of the dyes on the mesoporous TiO2 layer, the measurement of absorption spectra of all the tested dyes revealed a significant broadening of the absorption range. The positions of highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest occupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels of dye molecules were determined, indicating that all three dyes are good candidates for light harvesters in DSSCs. The cells were tested under simulated solar light, and their working parameters were determined. The results showed that the implementation of the back reflector layer made of BaSO4 provided an improvement in the cell efficiency of up to 17.9% for phenylfluorone, 60% for pyrocatechol violet and 21.4% for alizarin dye.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric storage, Latent Heat Storage, non-linear programming, Optimization, photovoltaic, renewable technologies, small-scale wind turbine
Given the large amount of energy required in the building sector, an interesting opportunity to reach future sustainable energy systems is the path towards low energy buildings. This work proposes an approach for optimally integrating building-scale energy technologies (both traditional and renewable) to enhance the transformation of the existing buildings (often energetically inefficient) in low-carbon systems. The approach promotes a transition sustainable from both the economic and environmental perspectives. Both operation and design optimization are considered with the aim of suggesting the best set of capacity of the technologies to be installed taking into account the expected operations. The building-scale technologies are integrated with proper storage units: Li-ion batteries and thermal storage (latent heat, that requires low installation space). As a dispatchable renewable technology, a biogas small-scale combined heat and power unit is included in the system. Once the key r... [more]
