Comparative Study of Stepwise Optimization and Global Optimization on a Nine-Phase Flux-Switching PM Generator
Feng Li, Xiaoyong Zhu
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: design optimization, flux switching permanent magnet (FSPM), global optimization, multi-objective
In this paper, the design procedure and optimization process of a multi-phase flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) generator for wind power generation system is investigated. Two different optimization methods—stepwise optimization and global optimization—are implemented and applied to the optimization of the proposed nine-phase FSPM generator-based wind power system. Both the advantages and disadvantages of two optimization methods are compared and analyzed. The results indicate that the stepwise optimization can achieve good effects on individual optimization objectives, whereas the global optimization can not only achieve a good optimization effect on a single objective, but also can find design point on the Pareto front, which can effectively optimize different multi-objects. The electromagnetic performance of the nine-phase FSPM generator is verified by experiments on a prototyped machine and the measured results show that the proposed generator exhibits the favorable characteri... Keywords: cyberattack, data transmission network, delivery time of data packets, distribution function, equivalent function, functioning quality, jitter, Laplace–Stieltjes transform, packet loss probability, stochastic network
Cyberattacks against the elements of technological data transmission networks represent a rather significant threat of disrupting the management of regional electric power complexes. Therefore, evaluating the functioning quality of data transmission networks in the context of cyberattacks is an important task that helps to make the right decisions on the telecommunication support of electric power systems. The known models and methods for solving this problem have limited application areas determined by the admissible packet distribution laws. The paper proposes a new method for evaluating the quality of the functioning of data transmission networks, based on modeling the process of functioning of data transmission networks in the form of a stochastic network. The proposed method removes restrictions on the form of the initial distributions and makes the assumptions about the exponential distribution of the expected time and packet servicing in modern technological data transmission ne... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CRO-SL algorithm, Energy Storage Systems, meta-heuristics, multi-method ensembles, railway lines
This paper deals with the problem of finding the optimal location and sizing of Energy Storage Systems in DC-electrified railway lines. These devices increment the use of the regenerated energy produced by the trains in the braking phases, as they store the energy to later provide to the catenary the excess of regenerated energy, that otherwise would be lost in the rheostats. However, these infrastructures require a high initial investment that, in some cases, may question their profitability. We propose a multi-method ensemble meta-heuristic to obtain the optimal solution to the problem, with a high level of accuracy. Specifically, the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers (CRO-SL) is proposed, an evolutionary-type approach able to run different search procedures within the same population. We will evaluate the performance of the CRO-SL in the problem, and we will show that it performs better than the best known existing meta-heuristics for this problem.

Keywords: biogas plant, digestate, hydrothermal carbonisation, membrane processes, water recovery
New regulations aimed at curbing the problem of eutrophication introduce limitations for traditional ways to use the by-product of anaerobic digestion—the digestate. Hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) can be a viable way to valorise the digestate in an energy-efficient manner and at the same time maximise the synergy in terms of recovery of water, nutrients, followed by more efficient use of the remaining carbon. Additionally, hydrothermal treatment is a feasible way to recirculate recalcitrant process residues. Recirculation to anaerobic digestion enables recovery of a significant part of chemical energy lost in HTC by organics dissolved in the liquid effluent. Recirculating back to the HTC process can enhance nutrient recovery by making process water more acidic. However, such an effect of synergy can be exploited to its full extent only when viable separation techniques are applied to separate organic by-products of HTC and water. The results presented in this study show that using ca... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Co3(BTC)2·12H2O, cobalt trimesate, MOFs, solvothermal synthesis
We report on the synthesis and the characterization of a novel cobalt trimesate metal-organic framework, designated as KCL-102. Powder X-ray diffraction pattern of KCL-102 is dominated by a reflection at 10.2° (d-spacing = 8.7 Å), while diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy indicates that the divalent cobalt centers are in two different coordination geometries: tetrahedral and octahedral. Further, the material shows low stability in humid air, and it transforms into the well-known phase of hydrous cobalt trimesate, Co3(BTC)2·12H2O. We associated this transition with the conversion of the tetrahedral cobalt to octahedral cobalt.

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary services DG, DER operation, distributed power injections, distribution-system modelling, sensitivity analysis, V-Q regulation, voltage improvement, voltage profile monitoring
The injection of apparent power to self-consumption buses generates voltage variations during network operation, which, when properly monitored, could support voltage regulation and control. In this paper, we propose a linear sensitivity modelling, quite useful for studies of voltage regulation with distributed energy resources (DER). This modelling consists of two analytical improvement steps: first, a full formulation for the voltage deviations, and second, the influence of line capacitance as Q-injections at the points of common couplings (PCCs). Our proposal is based on the linear topological sensitivity of an existing network (as a function of the line parameters X, R, and Bc), branch power flow (active−reactive power (P-Q)), and power injections at the PCCs. Here, the linear sensitivity algorithm is applied to a modified IEEE 33-bus distribution system to demonstrate its extended effectiveness to voltage monitoring and control scenarios. Its application estimates and compensates... [more]
Real Driving Emissions—Conception of a Data-Driven Calibration Methodology for Hybrid Powertrains Combining Statistical Analysis and Virtual Calibration Platforms

Keywords: cycle generation, emissions calibration, RDE, Real Driving Emissions, statistical safety, strategy optimization, test cycles, test procedures, validation methodology, virtual calibration
The combination of different propulsion and energy storage systems for hybrid vehicles is changing the focus in the field of powertrain calibration. Shorter time-to-market as well as stricter legal requirements regarding the validation of Real Driving Emissions (RDE) require the adaptation of current procedures and the implementation of new technologies in the powertrain development process. In order to achieve highest efficiencies and lowest pollutant emissions at the same time, the layout and calibration of the control strategies for the powertrain and the exhaust gas aftertreatment system must be precisely matched. An optimal operating strategy must take into account possible trade-offs in fuel consumption and emission levels, both under highly dynamic engine operation and under extended environmental operating conditions. To achieve this with a high degree of statistical certainty, the combination of advanced methods and the use of virtual test benches offers significant potential.... [more]
Selecting Freight Transportation Modes in Last-Mile Urban Distribution in Pamplona (Spain): An Option for Drone Delivery in Smart Cities
Adrian Serrano-Hernandez, Aitor Ballano, Javier Faulin
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: analytic hierarchy process, drones, energy optimization, freight urban transportation
Urban distribution in medium-sized cities faces a major challenge, mainly when deliveries are difficult in the city center due to: an increase of e-commerce, weak public transportation system, and the promotion of urban sustainability plans. As a result, private cars, public transportation, and freight transportation compete for the same space. This paper analyses the current state for freight logistics in the city center of Pamplona (Spain) and proposes alternative transportation routes and transportation modes in the last-mile city center distribution according to different criteria evaluated by residents. An analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was developed. A number of alternatives have been assessed considering routes and transportation modes: the shortest route criterion and avoiding some city center area policies are combined with traditional van-based, bike, and aerial (drone) distribution protocols for delivering parcels and bar/restaurant supplies. These alternatives have been e... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Biofuels, Biomass, biorefinery, hydrothermal processing, lignocellulosic materials
Agave bagasse is a residual biomass in the production of the alcoholic beverage tequila, and therefore, it is a promising raw material in the development of biorefineries using hot compressed water pretreatment (hydrothermal processing). Surfactants application has been frequently reported as an alternative to enhance monomeric sugars production efficiency and as a possibility to reduce the enzyme loading required. Nevertheless, the surfactant’s action mechanisms in the enzymatic hydrolysis is still not elucidated. In this work, hot compressed water pretreatment was applied on agave bagasse for biomass fractionation at 194 °C in isothermal regime for 30 min, and the effect of non-ionic surfactants (Tween 20, Tween 80, Span 80, and Polyethylene glycol (PEG 400)) was studied as a potential enhancer of enzymatic saccharification of hydrothermally pretreated solids of agave bagasse (AGB). It was found that non-ionic surfactants show an improvement in the conversion yield of cellulose to gl... [more]
Micronization of Hard Coal with the Use of a High-Pressure Water Jet
Przemysław J. Borkowski, Wiesław Szada-Borzyszkowski
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal comminution, coal micronization, high-pressure water jet, hydro-jet mill
This paper presents an original method for the micronization of coal particles in a hydro-jet mill, which allows effective comminuting of coal in the pressure range of 100−250 MPa, at a variable water flow rate of 0.2−0.5 dm3/s. The discussed high-pressure water jet mill (HPWJM) allows the comminution of standard fines, with a grain size up to 2 mm, and at a relatively high comminuting efficiency of 8 to 55 g/s. In addition, the paper presents energy-consumption ratios, and indicates the advantage of this method over mechanical grinding in a planetary ball-mill. At optimum conditions, coal comminution at an efficiency of Qc = 38.4 g/s and at an energy input of EH = 1.1 MJ/kg provides an average particle size of about 40 µm. The degree of comminution was further improved by applying roto-turbulent micronization, which resulted in an average size of comminuted coal particles of only 17 µm. As an additional result, the actual surface area of the particles increased by 10−30 thousand times... [more]

Keywords: ansys fluent, Computational Fluid Dynamics, cooling capacity, radiant cooling system, serpentine flow
Radiant cooling systems (RCS) are gaining acceptance as a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) solution for achieving adequate thermal comfort and maintaining acceptable indoor air quality inside buildings. RCS are well known for their energy-saving potential; however, serious condensation problem hinders the growth of this technology. In order to prevent the risk of condensation, the supply water temperature is kept higher than the dew point temperature of the air inside the room. The full potential of the cooling power of a radiant cooling panel is limited. Therefore, this article is on maximizing the cooling capacity of a radiant cooling panel, in terms of flow configuration. Radiant cooling panels (RCP) with different chilled water pipe configurations are designed and compared, side by side with the conventional serpentine flow configuration. The cooling performance of the radiant cooling panels is evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with Ansys Fluent... [more]

Keywords: aerosol, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Modelling, underground mine
The paper presents the results of experimental and model tests of transport of dispersed fluid droplets forming a cloud of aerosol in a stream of air ventilating a selected section of the underground excavation. The excavation selected for testing is part of the ventilation network of the Experimental Mine Barbara of the Central Mining Institute. For given environmental conditions, such as temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and velocity of air, the distribution of aerosol droplet changes in the mixture of air and water vapor along the excavation at a distance was measured at 10 m, 25 m, and 50 m from the source of its emission. The source of aerosol emission in the excavation space was a water nozzle that was located 25 m from the inlet (inlet) of the excavation. The obtained results of in situ tests were related to the results of numerical calculations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Numerical calculations were performed using Ansys-Fluent and Ansys-CFX software. The... [more]
An Application of a Risk-Based Methodology to Anticipate Critical Situations Due to Extreme Weather Events in Transmission and Distribution Grids

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution network, resilience, tree fall, vulnerability, wet snow
Nowadays, distribution network operators are urged by regulatory authorities to reduce the load disruptions due to extreme weather events, i.e., to enhance network resilience: in particular, in Italy they are required to present a yearly plan (called “resilience plans”) describing the interventions aimed to improve network resilience. To this purpose, they need new methodologies and tools to assess the network resilience and to quantify the benefits of countermeasures. This paper proposes the application of a risk-based framework and tool to assess the impacts of extreme weather events in T&D grids, which anticipate critical network situations in presence of incumbent weather threats. To do this, the forecasting of weather events is combined with the component vulnerability models in order to predict which components are more prone to fail. Based on this set of components, the set of most risky contingencies is identified and their impacts on the distribution network in terms of unsupp... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: charge process, experimental tests, thermal energy storage, thermal stratification, thermocline thickness, water temperature evolution
This paper demonstrates that it is possible to characterize the water temperature profile and its temporal trend in a hot water storage tank during the thermal charge process, using a minimum number of thermocouples (TC), with minor differences compared to experimental data. Four experimental tests (two types of inlet and two water flow rates) were conducted in a 950 L capacity tank. For each experimental test (with 12 TC), four models were developed using a decreasing number of TC (7, 4, 3 and 2, respectively). The results of the estimation of water temperature obtained with each of the four models were compared with those of a fifth model performed with 12 TC. All models were tested for constant inlet temperature. Very acceptable results were achieved (RMSE between 0.2065 °C and 0.8706 °C in models with 3 TC). The models were also useful to estimate the water temperature profile and the evolution of thermocline thickness even with only 3 TC (RMSE between 0.00247 °C and 0.00292 °C). A... [more]
Bi-Level Multi-Objective Optimization Scheduling for Regional Integrated Energy Systems Based on Quantum Evolutionary Algorithm
Wen Fan, Qing Liu, Mingyu Wang
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bi-level model, integrated energy system, multi-objective programming, quantum evolutionary algorithm, uncertainty
Integrated energy systems have become an important research topic in the pursuit of sustainable energy development. This paper examines regional integrated energy systems, presents the typical architecture of regional integrated energy systems, and builds an integrated energy system model. Two evaluation indexes are proposed: the integrated energy self-sufficiency rate and the expected energy deficiency index. Based on these evaluation indexes and taking into account the uncertainty of wind power generation, a bi-level optimization model based on meta-heuristic algorithms and multi-objective programming is established to solve the problem of regional integrated energy system planning under different load structures and for multi-period and multi-scenario operation modes. A quantum evolutionary algorithm is combined with genetic algorithms to solve the problem.
A Decision Support System for Scenario Analysis in Energy Refurbishment of Residential Buildings
Alberto Giretti, Alessandra Corneli, Berardo Naticchia
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decision support systems, energy performance contracting, facility management, knowledge management, reduced order modelling
The energy efficiency of buildings is a key condition in the implementation of national sustainability policies. Energy efficiency of the built heritage is usually achieved through energy contracts or renovation projects that are based on decisions often taken with limited knowledge and in short time frames. However, the collection of comprehensive and reliable technical information to support the decision process is a long and expensive activity. Approximate assessment methods based on stationary thermal models are usually adopted, often introducing unacceptable uncertainties for economically onerous contracts. Hence, it is important to develop tools that, by capitalizing on the operators’ experience, can provide support for fast and reliable assessments. The paper documents the development of a decision support system prototype for the management of energy refurbishment investments in the residential building sector that assists operators in the energy performance assessment, using a... March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dimensionless numbers, enhanced oil recovery, fractured reservoirs, gravity and capillary forces
The enhanced oil recovery mechanisms in fractured reservoirs are complex and not fully understood. It is technically challenging to quantify the related driving forces and their interaction in the matrix and fractures medium. Gravity and capillary forces play a leading role in the recovery process of fractured reservoirs. This study aims to quantify the performance of EOR methods in fractured reservoirs using dimensionless numbers. A systematic approach consisting of the design of experiments, simulations, and proxy-based optimization was used in this work. The effect of driving forces on oil recovery for water injection and several EOR processes such as gas injection, foam injection, water-alternating gas (WAG) injection, and foam-assisted water-alternating gas (FAWAG) injection was analyzed using dimensionless numbers and a surface response model. The results show that equilibrium between gravitational and viscous forces in fracture and capillary and gravity forces in matrix blocks d... [more]
Dominant Processing Factors in Two-Step Fabrication of Pure Sulfide CIGS Absorbers

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: pure sulfide CIGS, rapid thermal annealing, two-step sequential processing
Pure sulfide CIGS solar cells are interesting candidates for standalone solar cells or top cells in a tandem configuration. To understand the limits and improve the power conversion efficiency of these devices, a comprehensive approach aimed at composition, interface, and process engineering should be employed. Here, the latter was explored. Using a two-step fabrication technique and one-variable-at-a-time methodology, we found the four processing factors affecting the absorber the most. While two were already backed by the previous literature, we found new and statistical evidence for two other important factors as well. The impact of alkali barrier diffusion was also established with statistical significance and under various processing conditions. Furthermore, the absorber roughness for samples without a barrier indicated a significant negative linear correlation with the devices’ efficiency. This contribution could aid engineers in more efficient process designs.

Keywords: clustering method, ensemble forecasting, PV power forecasting, recurrent neural network
Photovoltaic (PV) power forecasting urges in economic and secure operations of power systems. To avoid an inaccurate individual forecasting model, we propose an approach for a one-day to three-day ahead PV power hourly forecasting based on the stacking ensemble model with a recurrent neural network (RNN) as a meta-learner. The proposed approach is built by using real weather data and forecasted weather data in the training and testing stages, respectively. To accommodate uncertain weather, a daily clustering method based on statistical features, e.g., daily average, maximum, and standard deviation of PV power is applied in the data sets. Historical PV power output and weather data are used to train and test the model. The single learner considered in this research are artificial neural network, deep neural network, support vector regressions, long short-term memory, and convolutional neural network. Then, RNN is used to combine the forecasting results of each single learner. It is also... [more]
Design of a Bézier-Profile Plate for Closely Spaced Multimodal Vibration Energy Harvesting
Hai-Dang Nguyen, Dung-An Wang
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bézier curve, energy harvesting, multimodal
A cubic Bézier-profile plate for multimodal vibration energy harvesting was developed. The design of the plate was based on an optimization procedure in which the profile of the plate was optimized via the parameters of a cubic Bézier curve to meet the requirements. The multimodal energy harvesting of the plate exploited its first bending mode and its first twisting mode. The conversion of vibration energy into electrical energy was by electromagnetic induction with a magnet attached to a corner of the plate. These two closely spaced vibration modes achieved the multi-modal energy harvesting of the device. Prototypes of the device were manufactured using a numerical-control machining process. The experimental results were in good agreement with the design specifications. With the same base lengths, height, and thickness, the maximum von Mises stress of the proposed plate was much lower due to its bell-shaped profile. The cubic Bézier curve chosen for the plate profile was effective for... [more]

This paper presents an optimum earthing system design for improving the lightning performance of a 500 kV transmission line for its sustainable operation. The study includes an interpretation of the soil profile and compares the results between default and new earthing arrangements for improving tower footing resistance and tower footing impedance. An evaluation of the tower footing resistance (TFR) and impedance (Ri) before and after earthing improvement was carried out. Moreover, the effects of TFR and Ri, also known as low and high-frequency earthing, respectively, based on a specification of TFR and soil resistivity (SR) ranges at various sites were also considered. The analysis was carried out using the SESCAD tool of Current Distribution Electromagnetic Field Grounding and Soil Structure Analysis software (CDEGS) and PSCAD/EMTDC software for low and high frequency earthing, respectively. From the analysis, the results showed that the new earthing arrangement reduced the TFR by 74... [more]
Generation Data of Synthetic High Frequency Solar Irradiance for Data-Driven Decision-Making in Electrical Distribution Grids

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data analysis, electrical distribution grids, Markov Chain (MC) model, numerical simulation, photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar irradiance
In this paper, we introduce a model representing the key characteristics of high frequency variations of solar irradiance and photovoltaic (PV) power production based on Clear Sky Index (CSI) data. The model is suitable for data-driven decision-making in electrical distribution grids, e.g., descriptive/predictive analyses, optimization, and numerical simulation. We concentrate on solar irradiance data since the power production of a PV system strongly correlates with solar irradiance at the site location. The solar irradiance is not constant due to the Earth’s orbit and irradiance absorption/scattering from the clouds. To simulate the operation of a PV system with one-minute resolution for a specific coordinate, we have to use a model based on the CSI of the solar irradiance data, capturing the uncertainties caused by cloud movements. The proposed model is based on clustering the days of each year into groups of days, e.g., (i) cloudy, (ii) intermittent cloudy, and (iii) clear sky. The... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitation, draft tube, pressure pulsation, pump turbine, transient process
Pumped-storage power stations play a regulatory role in the power grid through frequent transition processes. The pressure pulsation in the draft tube of the pump-turbine under transient processes is important for safe operation, which is more intense than that in the steady-state condition. However, there is no effective method to obtain the exact pressure in the draft tube in the transient flow field. In this paper, the pressure in the draft tube of a pump-turbine under steady-state and transient conditions are studied by means of CFD. The reliability of the simulation method is verified by comparing the real pressure pulsation data with the test results. Due to the distribution of the pressure pulsation in the draft tube being complex and uneven, the location of the pressure monitoring points directly affects the accurate judgement of cavitation. Eight monitoring surfaces were set in the straight cone of the draft tube and nine monitoring points were set on each monitoring surface t... [more]

Keywords: algorithm, desert region, IPCC scenarios, Perceived Temperature, residential sector, urban climate prediction
Climate change and expected weather patterns in the long-term threaten the livelihood inside oases settlements in arid lands, particularly under the recurring heat waves during the harsh months. This paper investigates the impact of climate change on the outdoor thermal comfort within a multifamily housing neighborhood that is considered the most common residential archetype in Algerian Sahara, under extreme weather conditions in the summer season, in the long-term. It focuses on assessing the outdoor thermal comfort in the long-term, based on the Perceived Temperature index (PT), using simulation software ENVI-met and calculation model RayMan. Three different stations in situ were conducted and combined with TMY weather datasets for 2020 and the IPCC future projections: A1B, A2, B1 for 2050, and 2080. The results are performed from two different perspectives: to investigate how heat stress evolution undergoes climate change from 2020 till 2080; and for the development of a mathematica... [more]
A New Measurement of Anisotropic Relative Permeability and Its Application in Numerical Simulation

Keywords: anisotropic, fluvial sandstone reservoir, heterogeneity, relative permeability, reservoir numerical simulation
In this paper, we used a self-developed anisotropic cubic core holder to test anisotropic relative permeability by the unsteady-states method, and introduced the anisotropic relative permeability to the traditional numerical simulator. The oil−water two-phase governing equation considering the anisotropic relative permeability is established, and the difference discretization is carried out. We formed a new oil−water two-phase numerical simulation method. It is clear that in a heterogeneous rock with millimeter to centimeter scale laminae, relative permeability is an anisotropic tensor. When the displacement direction is parallel to the bedding, the residual oil saturation is high and the displacement efficiency is low. The greater the angle between the displacement direction and the bedding strike, the lower the residual oil saturation is, the higher the displacement efficiency is, and the relative permeability curve tends towards a rightward shift. The new simulator showed that the a... [more]
