Longwall Top-Coal Caving Mechanism and Cavability Optimization with Hydraulic Fracturing in Thick Coal Seam: A Case Study
Zhaohui Wang, Yuesong Tang, Hao Gong
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: failure mechanism, hydraulic fracturing, longwall top-coal caving, stress path, top-coal cavability
Longwall top-coal caving mechanisms and cavability optimization with hydraulic fracturing are analysed in this study. Based on the geological and geotechnical conditions of the Dongzhouyao coal mine, it is revealed that top-coal failure mechanisms are dominated by both compressive and tensile stresses. Ahead of the face line, shear failure initiates at the lower level of the top-coal and propagates to the upper level. Compressive stress-induced damage leads to obvious deterioration in tensile strength, causing the onset of tensile failure in the top-coal behind the face line. Accumulated plastic strain (APS) is selected as a top-coal cavability indicator. The cavability degrades gradually at the higher elevation of the top-coal while it is greatly strengthened as the top-coal approaches closer to the face line. In a thick coal seam without hydraulic fractures, the maximum APS occurs at the middle section of the face length in the Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) panel. After hydraulic f... [more]

Keywords: bayesian optimisation, convolutional neural network, deep learning, disaggregation, Fourier series, frequency component, load, long short-term memory neural network, nonintrusive load monitoring, regression
Load disaggregation for the identification of specific load types in the total demands (e.g., demand-manageable loads, such as heating or cooling loads) is becoming increasingly important for the operation of existing and future power supply systems. This paper introduces an approach in which periodical changes in the total demands (e.g., daily, weekly, and seasonal variations) are disaggregated into corresponding frequency components and correlated with the same frequency components in the meteorological variables (e.g., temperature and solar irradiance), allowing to select combinations of frequency components with the strongest correlations as the additional explanatory variables. The paper first presents a novel Fourier series regression method for obtaining target frequency components, which is illustrated on two household-level datasets and one substation-level dataset. These results show that correlations between selected disaggregated frequency components are stronger than the c... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, hexadecane, hydrocarbons, methanogens, toxicity
Hydrocarbon-containing wastes and wastewaters are produced worldwide by the activities of the oil and gas industry. Anaerobic digestion has the potential to treat these waste streams, while recovering part of its energy potential as biogas. However, hydrocarbons are toxic compounds that may inhibit the microbial processes, and particularly the methanogens. In this work, the toxicity of hexadecane (0−30 mM) towards pure cultures of hydrogenotrophic methanogens (Methanobacterium formicicum and Methanospirillum hungatei) was assessed. Significantly lower (p < 0.05) methane production rates were only verified in the incubations with more than 15 mM hexadecane and represented up to 52% and 27% inhibition for M. formicicum and M. hungatei, respectively. The results obtained point out that 50% inhibition of the methanogenic activity would likely occur at hexadecane concentrations between 5−15 mM and >30 mM for M. formicicum and M. hungatei, respectively, suggesting that toxic effects from ali... Keywords: control strategies, Dynamic Modelling, line commuted converter, modular multilevel converter, multilevel HVDC, stability, VSC-HVDC
High-voltage direct current (HVDC) has received considerable attention due to several advantageous features such as minimum transmission losses, enhanced stability, and control operation. An appropriate model of HVDC is necessary to assess the operating conditions as well as to analyze the transient and steady-state stabilities integrated with the AC networks. Nevertheless, the construction of an HVDC model is challenging due to the high computational cost, which needs huge ranges of modeling experience. Therefore, advanced dynamic modeling of HVDC is necessary to improve stability with minimum power loss. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the various dynamic modeling of the HVDC transmission system. In line with this matter, an in-depth investigation of various HVDC mathematical models is carried out including average-value modeling (AVM), voltage source converter (VSC), and line-commutated converter (LCC). Moreover, numerous stability assessment models of HVDC are outline... [more]

Wei-Jie Su, Yao-Hsien Liu
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer, infrared thermography, internal cooling, rib, turbine blade
Convective heat transfer enhancement using rib turbulators is effective for turbine blade internal cooling. Detailed heat transfer measurement of X-shaped ribs in a trapezoidal cooling channel was experimentally conducted using infrared thermography. The novel X-shaped ribs were designed by combining two V-shaped ribs, and more secondary flows generated by the X rib delivered higher heat transfer enhancement. The Reynolds numbers in this study were 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000. These ribs were installed on two opposite walls of a trapezoidal channel in a staggered arrangement. The rib pitch-to-height ratios were 10 and 20, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio was 0.128. Results indicated that higher heat transfer distribution was observed in the vicinity of the shorter base in the trapezoidal channel. The full X-shaped ribs and the V-shaped ribs demonstrated the highest Nusselt number ratios among all the cases. Although full X-shaped ribs contributed to higher heat transfer im... [more]
Energy-Aware Activity Control for Wireless Sensing Infrastructure Using Periodic Communication and Mixed-Integer Programming
Piotr Arabas, Andrzej Sikora, Wojciech Szynkiewicz
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy, mixed integer programming, wireless sensor network
This paper addresses the energy conservation problem in wireless sensor networks, in which sensor data are aggregated into packages and then transmitted periodically to the base station according to an established schedule. We formulate two mixed integer programming problems, first for minimum total energy usage and second for min-max per node energy usage. We present two algorithms for slot allocation that exploit the periodic nature of the data collection process by allocating a subset of nodes to subsequent frames. A mixed-integer solver solves the resulting mathematical programming task. The performed numerical experiments show that the proposed approach is appropriate for relatively small networks when minimizing the total energy consumption problem. Hopefully, the problem may be solved for medium size networks when a maximum node energy consumption performance index is used.

Keywords: air pollution, ANN, bulk carrier, container carrier, deadweight, engine power, fuel consumption, sea transport, speed, tanker
The 2007−2008 financial crisis, together with rises in fuel prices and stringent pollution regulation, led to the need to update the methods concerning ship propulsion system design. In this article, a set of artificial neural networks was used to update the design equations to estimate the engine power and fuel consumption of modern tankers, bulk carriers, and container ships. Deadweight or TEU capacity and ship speed were used as the inputs for the ANNs. This study shows that even a linear ANN with two neurons in the input and output layers, with purelin activation functions, offers an accurate estimation of ship propulsion parameters. The proposed linear ANNs have simple mathematical structures and are straightforward to apply. The ANNs presented in the article were developed based on the data of the most recent ships built from 2015 to present, and could have a practical application at the preliminary design stage, in transportation or air pollution studies for modern commercial ca... Addressing the Effect of Social Acceptance on the Distribution of Wind Energy Plants and the Transmission Grid in Germany
Franziska Flachsbarth, Marion Wingenbach, Matthias Koch
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acceptance, burden level, energy system modeling, grid expansion algorithm, socio-ecologic dimensions, transmission grid expansion need, wind energy
Social acceptance is increasingly becoming a limiting factor in implementing the energy transition in Germany. From today’s perspective, the expansion of wind energy and future transmission grids is only somewhat a technical or economic challenge rather than a social one. Since political decisions on the energy system transformation are often derived from findings of energy system modeling, it seems necessary to increasingly integrate the effects of socio-ecological aspects, such as acceptance issues in energy models. In this paper, an approach is introduced to address effects of social acceptance in energy system models by comparing the influence of different distribution scenarios of wind energy in Germany on the expansion need for future transmission lines. The results show that a socio-ecologic distribution of onshore wind installations according to a balanced burden of the German society does not reduce the grid expansion need significantly compared to an economic siting. Keywords: energy prediction, Fault Detection, multiple linear regression analysis, swimming facilities
This paper presents a statistical model for predicting the time-averaged total power consumption of an indoor swimming facility. The model can be a powerful tool for continuous supervision of the facility’s energy performance that can quickly disclose possible operational disruptions/irregularities and thus minimize annual energy use. Multiple linear regression analysis is used to analyze data collected in a swimming facility in Norway. The resolution of the original training dataset was in 1 min time steps and during the investigation was transposed both by time-averaging the data, and by treating part of the dataset exclusively. The statistically significant independent variables were found to be the outdoor dry-bulb temperature and the relative pool usage factor. The model accurately predicted the power consumption in the validation process, and also succeeded in disclosing all the critical operational disruptions in the validation dataset correctly. The model can therefore be appli... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage system (BESS), grid-connected PV plant, photovoltaic, power conversion system (PCS), renewable energy sources (RES), solar plus storage sizing
In large-scale photovoltaic (PV) power plants, the integration of a battery energy storage system (BESS) permits a more flexible operation, allowing the plant to support grid stability. In hybrid PV+BESS plants, the storage system can be integrated by using different power conversion system (PCS) layouts and different charge−discharge strategies. In the AC-coupling layout, the BESS is connected to the ac-side of the system through an additional inverter. In the DC-coupling layout, the BESS is connected to the dc-side, with or without a dedicated dc−dc converter, and no additional inverter is needed. Referring to a 288 MWp PV plant with a 275 MWh BESS, this paper compares the PCS efficiency between AC- and DC-coupling solutions. The power injected into the grid is obtained considering providing primary power-frequency regulation services. A charging and discharging strategy of the BESS is proposed to ensure cyclic battery energy shifting. The power flows in the different components of t... [more]
Parameters Influencing on Electric Vehicle Range

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: depth of discharge, electric vehicle, electric vehicle range
There is a range of anxiety-related phenomena among users and potential buyers of electric vehicles. Chief among them is the fear of the vehicle stopping and its users getting “stuck” before reaching their designated destination. The limited range of an electric vehicle makes EV users worry that the battery will drain while driving and the vehicle will stall on the road. It is therefore important to know the factors that could further reduce the range during daily vehicle operation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of selected parameters on a battery’s depth of discharge (DOD). In a simulation study of an electric vehicle, the effects of the driving cycle, ambient temperature, load, and initial state of charge of the accumulator on the energy consumption pattern and a battery’s depth of discharge (DOD) were analyzed. The simulation results confirmed that the route taken has the highest impact on energy consumption. The presented results show how significantly the o... [more]
System-Independent Irradiance Sensorless ANN-Based MPPT for Photovoltaic Systems in Electric Vehicles
Baldwin Cortés, Roberto Tapia, Juan J. Flores
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural networks, Bayesian regularization, electric vehicles, maximum power point tracking, photovoltaic
The integration of photovoltaic systems (PVS) in electric vehicles (EV) increases the vehicle’s autonomy by providing an additional energy source other than the battery. However, current solar cell technology generates around 200 W for a 1.4 m2 panel (to be installed on the roof of the EV) at stable irradiance conditions. This limitation in production and the sudden changes in irradiance produced by shadows of clouds, buildings, and other structures make developing a fast and efficient maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique in this area necessary. This article proposes an artificial neural network (ANN)-based MPPT, called DS-ANN, that uses manufacturer datasheet parameters as inputs to the network to address this problem. The Bayesian backpropagation-regularization performs the training, ensuring that the MPPT technique operates satisfactorily on different PVS without retraining. We simulated the response of 20 commercial modules against actual irradiance data to validate the pr... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: endogenous learning, energy system models, energy system optimization models, learning by doing, learning curve, learning rate
Conventional energy production based on fossil fuels causes emissions that contribute to global warming. Accurate energy system models are required for a cost-optimal transition to a zero-emission energy system, which is an endeavor that requires a methodical modeling of cost reductions due to technological learning effects. In this review, we summarize common methodologies for modeling technological learning and associated cost reductions via learning curves. This is followed by a literature survey to uncover learning rates for relevant low-carbon technologies required to model future energy systems. The focus is on (i) learning effects in hydrogen production technologies and (ii) the application of endogenous learning in energy system models. Finally, we discuss methodological shortcomings of typical learning curves and possible remedies. One of our main results is an up-to-date overview of learning rates that can be applied in energy system models.

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct air capture, methanol production, process integration, solar energy, thermochemical cycles
Methanol is an example of a valuable chemical that can be produced from water and carbon dioxide through a chemical process that is fully powered by concentrated solar thermal energy and involves three steps: direct air capture (DAC), thermochemical splitting and methanol synthesis. In the present work, we consider the whole value chain from the harvesting of raw materials to the final product. We also identify synergies between the aforementioned steps and collect them in five possible scenarios aimed to reduce the specific energy consumption. To assess the scenarios, we combined data from low and high temperature DAC with an Aspen Plus® model of a plant that includes water and carbon dioxide splitting units via thermochemical cycles (TCC), CO/CO2 separation, storage and methanol synthesis. We paid special attention to the energy required for the generation of low oxygen partial pressures in the reduction step of the TCC, as well as the overall water consumption. Results show that sug... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electro-hydraulic spool valve, micro valves, robust control, uncertain system identification
Hydraulic spool valve, pilot operated with bi-state switching micro valves is a low-cost alternative to the conventional proportional and high-response valves. However, high-frequency switching causes variations in the control flow which limits achievable spool tracking error. This paper presents the design of a robust μ-controller for the spool position reference tracking synthesized with D-K iterative procedure. Furthermore, in order to reduce wind-up effects in the closed-loop, the μ-controller is decomposed to a canonical observer and state feedback components which allows explicit introduction of the saturated control signal in the controller equations. The uncertainty model required for the μ-synthesis is inferred from the nonlinear hydraulic model by identification of a Box−Jenkins model set characterized by its parameter covariance matrix. The regulator is implemented in a 32-bit programmable logic controller (PLC) and its performance is experimentally verified on a laboratory... [more]

The use of cutting fluids has played a vital role in machining operations in lubrication and cooling. Most cutting fluids are mineral oil-based products that are hazardous to the environment and the worker, cause severe diseases and pollute the environment. In addition, petroleum resources are becoming increasingly unsustainable. Due to environmental and health issues, legislations have been established to ensure that the consumption of mineral oil is reduced. Consequently, researchers are making efforts to replace these mineral oil-based products. Vegetable oils are grasping attention due to their better lubricating properties, ease of availability, biodegradability, low prices, and non-toxicity. In this study, a detailed review and critical analysis are conducted of the research works involving vegetable oils as cutting fluids keeping in view the shortcomings and possible solutions to overcome these drawbacks. The purpose of the review is to emphasise the benefits of vegetable oil-ba... [more]

Keywords: active power filter, current harmonics, Energy Efficiency, hybrid power filter, power quality capacitor bank, reactive power, resource saving
Based on the development of the theory of reactive power and distortion power, starting with the works of Fryze and Budeanu, it has been found that the contradictions in the definition of the components of inactive powers are caused by errors in the introduced intermediate concepts and corresponding calculations when switching to nonlinear and non-sinusoidal AC circuits. The materials of the works of modern researchers and the numerical calculations carried out made it possible to trace the differences between reactive power and distortion power, to confirm the orthogonality properties of the active, reactive power, and distortion power components. The paper defines the conditions for achieving a power balance in an AC network with nonlinear loads, compiled and tested criteria leading to the absence of distortion power in a single-phase AC network. Using the time base of the projection of the generalized vectors in vector diagrams, it is shown that compliance with the criteria for the... [more]

March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aging, experimental, lithium, parameters, testing
Degradation mechanism of batteries has to be carefully studied when considering their utilization in electrical power systems. This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental campaign, through which three different lithium−iron−phosphate (LFP) cells were subjected to different electrical cycling stresses. The purpose of the campaign was to evaluate the cells’ aging, as well as to try to find parameters on the cell behavior before its end of life, able to act as state-of-life (SOL) (or aging) indicators. The considered stress consists of the cyclic repetition of fixed-duration discharge steps, followed by full charge phases. The three cells under study were subjected to the very same stress pattern but with three different discharge and charge power levels: low, medium, and high. The results showed that the end-of-discharge voltage and the cell internal resistance can be used as good SOL indicators. However, both are significant functions of the cell conditions, such as the... [more]

Energy systems are undergoing a profound transition worldwide, substituting nuclear and thermal power with intermittent renewable energy sources (RES), creating discrepancies between the production and consumption of electricity and increasing their dependence on greenhouse gas (GHG) intensive imports from neighboring energy systems. In this study, we analyze the concurrent electrification of the mobility sector and investigate the impact of electric vehicles (EVs) on energy systems with a large share of renewable energy sources. In particular, we build an optimization framework to assess how Evs could compete and interplay with other energy storage technologies to minimize GHG-intensive electricity imports, leveraging the installed Swiss reservoir and pumped hydropower plants (PHS) as examples. Controlling bidirectional EVs or reservoirs shows potential to decrease imported emissions by 33−40%, and 60% can be reached if they are controlled simultaneously and with the support of PHS fa... March 10, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: linear active disturbance rejection control, load frequency control, multi-source power system, reinforcement learning, soft actor-critic
To ensure the safe operation of an interconnected power system, it is necessary to maintain the stability of the frequency and the tie-line exchanged power. This is one of the hottest issues in the power system field and is usually called load frequency control. To overcome the influences of load disturbances on multi-source power systems containing thermal power plants, hydropower plants, and gas turbine plants, we design a linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) based on the tie-line bias control mode. For LADRC, the parameter selection of the controller directly affects the response performance of the entire system, and it is usually not feasible to manually adjust parameters. Therefore, to obtain the optimal controller parameters, we use the Soft Actor-Critic algorithm in reinforcement learning to obtain the controller parameters in real time, and we design the reward function according to the needs of the power system. We carry out simulation experiments to verify the... [more]

Keywords: explosion, film boiling, liquefied natural gas, liquid hydrogen, loss of containment, rapid phase transition, risk assessment, spill accidents
Liquid hydrogen (LH2) spills share many of the characteristics of liquefied natural gas (LNG) spills. LNG spills on water sometimes result in localized vapor explosions known as rapid phase transitions (RPTs), and are a concern in the LNG industry. LH2 RPT is not well understood, and its relevance to hydrogen safety is to be determined. Based on established theory from LNG research, we present a theoretical assessment of an accidental spill of a cryogen on water, including models for pool spreading, RPT triggering, and consequence quantification. The triggering model is built upon film-boiling theory, and predicts that the mechanism for RPT is a collapse of the gas film separating the two liquids (cryogen and water). The consequence model is based on thermodynamical analysis of the physical processes following a film-boiling collapse, and is able to predict peak pressure and energy yield. The models are applied both to LNG and LH2, and the results reveal that (i) an LNG pool will be la... [more]

Keywords: critical breakdown field strength, discharge channel morphology characteristics, residual resistivity, X-ray imaging technology
Partial discharge of soil occurs when a lightning current enters the ground, and the strength of partial discharge is closely related to the magnitude of its critical breakdown field strength. Therefore, how to accurately obtain the variation law of the typical soil critical breakdown field strength and residual resistivity is the key to realizing the safe operation of the grounding devices and cables in the ground. This paper first selects a variety of typical soils to study the influence of various factors on the morphology of the discharge channel, and then studies the calculation methods of the soil critical breakdown field strength and residual resistivity under the introduction of different discharge channel morphologies and structures, and further discusses the reason why typical soil media factors have a small impact on the critical breakdown field. The experimental results show that under the same conditions, the critical breakdown field strengths of different soils from small... [more]
