March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural residues, biodiesel, characterization, heterogeneous catalyst, Optimization
The use of biobased heterogeneous catalysts made from agricultural waste for producing biodiesel has gained attention for its potential to create a sustainable and low-cost process. The blending of two or more biomass residues to create more viable biobased catalysts is still in its early stages. In this study, a Biobased Composite Heterogeneous Catalyst (CHC) was made by blending the shells of periwinkle (PWS), melon seed-husk (MSH), and locust bean pod-husk (LBP) at a mixing ratio of 67:17:17 using Simplex Lattice Design Mixture, that was then calcined for 4 h at 800 °C. The chemical, structural, and morphological components of the CHC were characterized via XRF, XRD, SEM-EDX, BET, TGA/DSC, and FTIR to assess its catalytic potential. The CHC was employed to synthesize biodiesel from palm kernel oil, and the process optimization was conducted using the Taguchi approach. The XRF analysis showed that the catalyst had 69.049 of Calcium (Ca) and 9.472 of potassium (K) in their elemental a... [more]

d-q Small-Signal Model for Grid-Forming MMC and Its Application in Electromagnetic-Transient Simulations
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: grid-forming, impedance modeling, inverter-based power grid, MMC model, MMC transfer function
The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a keystone of modern energy transmission systems. Consequently, there is an ongoing pursue for mathematical models to represent it under different configurations and control approaches. In short, this paper introduces an analytical Thévenin-equivalent model for representing the MMC when it is controlled with inner current- and an outer voltage-loop altogether. The model is based on a linearized representation of the converter and conveys the dynamics of passive components, such as submodule capacitors and arm reactors, as well as both control loops. Besides that, the proposed model is divided into a close-loop transfer matrix and the equivalent impedance matrix, both of which represent the relationships between the ac-side dq voltages and currents. We also propose a framework for implementing electromagnetic−transient simulations using the impedance model of this power electronic converter. The framework reduces a multi-bus power grid to a mult... [more]

Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading Pricing Mechanisms: Towards a Comprehensive Analysis of Energy and Network Service Pricing (NSP) Mechanisms to Get Sustainable Enviro-Economical Energy Sector
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: decentralization, distribution network, energy community, energy pricing mechanism, network service mechanism, peer-to-peer energy trading, transactive energy
Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading facilitates both consumers and prosumers to exchange energy without depending on an intermediate medium. This system makes the energy market more decentralized than before, which generates new opportunities in energy-trading enhancements. In recent years, P2P energy trading has emerged as a method for managing renewable energy sources in distribution networks. Studies have focused on creating pricing mechanisms for P2P energy trading, but most of them only consider energy prices. This is because of a lack of understanding of the pricing mechanisms in P2P energy trading. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of pricing mechanisms for energy and network service prices in P2P energy trading, based on the recent advancements in P2P. It suggests that pricing methodology can be categorized by trading process in two categories, namely energy pricing and network service pricing (NSP). Within these categories, network service pricing can be used to ident... [more]

Keywords: coupled wake model, Deep Array, Eddy-Viscosity, landcover, roughness, roughness length, wake model, WorldCover
This paper discusses how the incorporation of high-resolution ground coverage dataset ESA WorldCover into a wind flow field and wake simulation calculation, as well as the use of the coupled wake model for wind farm output simulation, can improve the accuracy of wind resource assessment using engineering examples. In the actual case of grid-connected wind farms in central China, SCADA wind speed data is reconstructed to the free flow wind speed in front of the wind turbine impeller using the transfer function of the nacelle, and the wind farm is modeled using OpenWind software, simulating the wind speed at the height of each wind turbine hub and each wind turbine output. The results show that when other initial data are consistent, using ESA’s high-precision land cover dataset WorldCover 10 m to make roughness lengths which improves the wind farm output simulation accuracy by 8.91%, showing that it is worth trying to apply WorldCover 10 m to the wind farm simulation design. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Conveyor Belt, hydrokinetic energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Renewable energy technologies can help us combat climate change and hydrokinetic energy conversion systems could play a major role. The simplicity of hydrokinetic devices helps us to exploit renewable sources, especially in remote locations, which is not possible with conventional methods. A new type of hydrokinetic device called the Energy Conveyor Belt was designed, which works on the concept of conveyor belt technology. Numerical simulations are performed on the design of the Energy Conveyor Belt with Ansys FLUENT to optimize its performance. Some of the optimized models produced a maximum power slightly above 1 kW. The numerical results are then compared to the experimental results of other hydrokinetic turbines. The compactness and flexibility of the design give the Energy Conveyor Belt an advantage over other hydrokinetic devices in regions with fluctuating water levels. Further research has to be undertaken into cascading systems to increase the overall power generated by the sy... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: car sharing, electric vehicles, electromobility, shared mobility, sustainable mobility
Car-sharing services are developing at an ever-increasing pace. Taking into account the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and pursuit of the sustainable development of transport, implementing electric cars in car-sharing fleets is being proposed. On the one hand, these types of vehicles are referred to as emission-free, but on the other hand, their environmental friendliness is questionable due to the emission of carbon dioxide during the production of energy to power them. Although many scientific papers are devoted to the issue of reducing emissions through car sharing, there is a research gap concerning the real production of carbon dioxide by car-sharing vehicles during car-sharing trips. To fill this research gap, the objective of the article was to analyze the actual level of carbon dioxide emissions from combustion and electric vehicles from car-sharing systems produced when renting rides. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: earthquake, multi-hazard, offshore wind turbine (OWT), risk assessment, scour, suction bucket (SB)
For the offshore wind turbines (OWTs) located in a seismically active region, the occurrence of earthquakes combined with scour is a highly possible multi-hazard event. This study developed an alternative fragility analysis framework to assess the seismic performance of suction bucket-supported OWTs under the action of scour. First, the probabilistic approach was applied to calculate the occurrence probability of scour depth (SD) and earthquake events. Then, the possible combinations of these two events were considered in the analysis model to establish the fragility surface of the suction bucket foundation. Finally, by integrating the product of scour and earthquake hazard, as well as fragility curves, the suction bucket foundation failure probability was obtained. The developed framework provides a reliable approach to risk assessment for OWT-supporting structures in extreme event situations and can be applied to other complex natural hazards.

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: demand-side management, energy economics, Energy Efficiency, energy policy
Energy efficiency programs funded by utility customers provide an electricity resource in most U.S. states, but their scale and cost of saving electricity varies significantly by state. In this paper, we explore the drivers of the cost of saved electricity in these programs with an econometric model and nearly a decade of data reported by efficiency program administrators. We found strong evidence for economies of scale and weak evidence for diseconomies of scale, which suggests that states with low levels of efficiency savings relative to retail sales can increase the size of their efficiency programs without large increases to the cost of saved electricity. We discuss examples of energy efficiency forecasting and potential modeling in light our econometric analysis and identify methodological improvements relevant to utilities and grid operators. Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy policy, public acceptance, public engagement, renewable energy transition, social sustainability
The social acceptance of energy policies and renewable energy technologies is crucial in the era of the renewable energy transition. Yet, little is known about Israel’s transition in this regard. One thousand five hundred Israeli citizens were engaged through a survey to examine their perceptions of climate change and awareness regarding renewable energy technologies and national energy policy. Individual-level factors such as gender, age, and education were included in the survey to assess their possible influence on replies. The main findings were the following: (i) climate change impact is not felt as an immediate threat by the majority, and there is (ii) a lack of accurate knowledge about renewable energies; (iii) a lack of awareness regarding national energy and climate policy; and (iv) a lack of trust in citizens’ role in energy decision making. These findings are evaluated as a barrier to public engagement within the renewable energy development process in Israel.

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: empty by water displacing oil, flow characteristics, mobile pipeline
Water displacing oil is one of the main emptying methods for mobile pipelines. It has the advantages of being a simple process and highly safe. At present, the determination of a water displacing oil scheme of mobile pipelines is based on the oil−oil alternating transport theory of product oil pipelines. However, the insolubility of the oil phase and the water phase results in a great difference between the flow characteristics of water displacing oil and the oil−oil alternating transport of a product oil pipeline. In addition, due to the effect of buoyancy, the oil phase gathers at the high point of the pipeline and forms a liquid accumulation, which is difficult to carry away by water flow, resulting in the low emptying efficiency of the mobile pipeline. The essence of water displacing oil in a mobile pipeline is an oil−water two-phase unsteady displacement flow, involving liquid−liquid displacement flow, oil−water two-phase flow and water carrying oil.
