Subject: Materials
Keywords: bacterial biodiversity, chemical composition, financial indexes, organic matter, peat substrate, SWOT analysis
According to historical sources, a watermill existed in the valley of the Trojanka River on the north-western shore of Raduszyn Lake from the 15th century. Its dams lasted for centuries causing the water flow through the Raduszyn reservoir to slow down and deposit various mineral fractions in it. The aim of paper was to develop a scientific background for the sustainable management of organic matter extracted from the peat top and from deeper layers that are unsuitable for direct use, that is, decomposed peat. A SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis was used to describe ways of restoration of the water reservoir alongside the characterization of organic matter and the financial condition of the studied enterprise. For the use of the studied material as a homogeneous substrate for plant cultivation, the contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and copper were insufficient, whilst calcium was excessive. Microbiological analyses of the organic materials intende... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, energy production, sustainable development, thermodynamic analysis
In this study, modeling and thermodynamic analysis of the combined double flash geothermal cycle generation was conducted using zeotropic fluid as the working fluid in the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). The analysis was performed based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Hexane, cyclohexane, isohexane, R245fa, and R236ea exhibit good performance at higher temperatures. In this study, three fluids—hexane, cyclohexane, and isohexane—were used. First, the model results for the pure fluids were compared with those of previous studies. Then, the important parameters of the cycle, including the efficiency of the first law of thermodynamics, the efficiency of the second law of thermodynamics, net productive power, and the amount of exergy destruction caused by changing the mass fraction of the refrigerant for the zeotropic fluids (investigated for the whole cycle and ORC), were obtained and compared.

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid solar heating systems, solar assisted heat pumps, solar collectors, solar industrial process heating
Process heating is the activity with the most energy consumption in the industrial sector. Solar heating (SH) systems are a promising alternative to provide renewable thermal energy to industrial processes. However, factors such as high investment costs and area limitations in industrial facilities hinder their utilization; therefore, hybrid systems that combine two different solar thermal or photovoltaic technologies where each technology operates under conditions that allow a higher overall performance than conventional configurations have been proposed. In this review, we discuss the limitations of conventional SH systems and the potential of hybrid configurations to overcome them. First, the current literature about conventional and hybrid systems is presented. Then, the application of common performance indicators to evaluate hybrid configurations is analyzed. Finally, the limitation, advantages, and potential applications of conventional and hybrid systems are discussed. This wor... [more]

Keywords: battery management system, battery models, electric forklift, nonlinear grey box battery model, two-outputs nonlinear grey box model
Storing energy efficiently is one of the main factors of a more sustainable world. The battey management system in energy storage plays an extremely important role in ensuring these systems’ efficiency, safety, and performance. This battery management system is capable of estimating the battery states, which are used to give better efficiency, a long life cycle, and safety. However, these states cannot be measured directly and must be estimated indirectly using battery models. Therefore, accurate battery models are essential for battery management systems implementation. One of these models is the nonlinear grey box model, which is easy to implement in embedded systems and has good accuracy when used with a good parameter identification method. Regarding the parameter identification methods, the nonlinear least square optimization is the most used method. However, to have accurate results, it is necessary to define the system’s initial states, which is not an easy task. This paper pres... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: ARDL-PMG, Carbon Dioxide, Environmental Kuznets Curve, fiscal policy, G20
Fiscal policy is an essential tool that policymakers use for guiding the economy. Thus, the effects of fiscal policy may affect many aspects of our lives, including the impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This article investigates the role of fiscal policy, in addition to gross domestic product (GDP), innovation, and financial development, in mitigating CO2 emissions in the context of the Environmental Kuznets Curve theory in the Group of Twenty (G20) countries from 1995 to 2019. The study implied the autoregressive distributed lag of pooled mean group (ARDL-PMG) approach to analyze the suggested model. The results revealed the validity of the model for the G20 countries, as well as a long-run cointegration between the study variables. The results also showed that fiscal policy is associated positively with CO2 emissions. Hence, we recommend reconsidering the applied financial policy, redirecting it to support clean energy projects, provide incentives for projects combating envir... [more]

Zhongheng Sun, Tao Jiang, Hongtao Zhu, Xinluo Feng, Pengli Wei
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cyclostratigraphy, Dongying Depression, lake level, sedimentary noise modeling
The late Eocene succession of the Dongying Depression forms a highly productive hydrocarbon source. However, due to lack of an unambiguous fine chronostratigraphic framework for the late Eocene stratigraphy, it is challenging to understand the paleolake’s evolution and the driven mechanism of lake-level variation, a limitation which hinders hydrocarbon exploration. In this work, high-resolution gamma-ray logging data were analyzed to carry out the cyclostratigraphic analysis of the third member (Es3) of the Shahejie Formation in the Dongying Depression. Significant 405-kyr eccentricity cycles were recognized based on time series analysis and statistical modeling of estimated sedimentation rates. We abstracted ~57 m cycles of the GR data in the Es3 member, which were comparable with the long eccentricity cycles (~405-kyr) of the La2004 astronomical solution, yielding a 6.43 Myr long astronomical time scale (ATS) for the whole Es3 member. The calibrated astronomical age of the third/four... [more]

Keywords: dispersion, fat globule, jet homogenizer, milk dispersing, power, specific energy consumption
The priority task of the milk processing industry is in reducing the specific energy consumption of milk fat dispersion while simultaneously ensuring a high dispersion of milk emulsion. One of the possible ways to solve this problem is by developing and implementing a little-studied jet milk homogenizer of the slot type. In it, homogenization occurs by implementing the method of the separate feeding of cream, which allows creating the maximum difference between the speeds of skim milk and cream, which is a necessary condition for effective dispersion. Analytical dependences have been found that relate power and specific energy consumption to the performance of a milk homogenizer with the separate cream supply, the diameter of the annular gap, the fat content of normalized milk and cream, and the cream supply speed. The rational value of the fat content of the cream used for homogenization is analytically substantiated; in order to reduce the specific energy consumption of the process,... [more]

Mateusz Oszczypała, Jarosław Ziółkowski, Jerzy Małachowski
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: maintenance, Monte Carlo algorithm, reliability analysis, semi-Markov process, simulation approach, transport system
This research paper presents studies on the operation process of the Honker 2000 light utility vehicles that are part of the Polish Armed Forces transport system. The phase space of the process was identified based on the assumption that at any given moment the vehicle remains in one of four states, namely, task execution, awaiting a transport task, periodic maintenance, or repair. Vehicle functional readiness and technical suitability indices were adopted as performance measures for the technical system. A simulation model based on Monte Carlo methods was developed to determine the changes in the operational states. The occurrence of the periodic maintenance state is strictly determined by a planned and preventive strategy of operation applied within the analysed system. Other states are implementations of stochastic processes. The original source code was developed in the MATLAB environment to implement the model. Based on estimated probabilistic characteristics, the authors validate... [more]

Esad Tombarević, Igor Vušanović, Milan Šekularac
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airtightness, blower door, energy consumption, residential buildings, windows replacement
One of the important factors influencing the thermal performance of buildings is the leakage of the envelope. When it comes to Montenegro, although there is a formal airtightness requirement, air permeability tests are not mandatory and therefore there is a lack of data in this regard. This paper reports the results of fan pressurization tests on a single apartment in a multi-family residential building before and after replacing the windows. The replacement of old wooden windows with new UPVC ones, provided that the installation is carefully supervised, proved to be an effective air tightening measure, as it resulted in a reduction of air change rate at the reference building pressure from 6.25 h−1 to 0.77 h−1, or by nearly 90%. The energy impact of air leakage was evaluated using the national software for calculating the energy performance of buildings based on the DIN V 18599 methodology. Calculations showed that by reducing infiltration, significant energy savings for heating can b... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency, energy loss, hydraulic open system, hydraulic power pack, hydraulic pre-charging system
The overall efficiency and energy consumption problem in hydraulic power pack units with and without an additional pre-charging system was analyzed in this paper. A theoretical mathematical model was developed for calculating energy losses in both pump unit structures. To verify the theoretical relationships, a laboratory test stand was built, upon which the results of calculating the overall efficiency were compared with the results of the laboratory tests. Universal diagrams of the overall efficiency dependence as a function of pressure load and geometric adjustment of the main pump’s working volume were created for the case of a particular hydraulic pump unit without and with a pre-charging system. Based on this, discussions were carried out on whether and the way in which the additionally pre-charging system affects the parameters of the overall efficiency characteristics of the researched pump unit. Additionally, the dependence of the optimal pressure load and the maximum overall... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: maximum power point tracking, partial shading, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Solar Photovoltaic
Renewable Energy technologies are becoming suitable options for fast and reliable universal electricity access for all. Solar photovoltaic, being one of the RE technologies, produces variable output power (due to variations in solar radiation, cell, and ambient temperatures), and the modules used have low conversion efficiency. Therefore, maximum power point trackers are needed to harvest more power from the sun and to improve the efficiency of photovoltaic systems. This paper reviews the methods used for maximum power point tracking in photovoltaic systems. These methods have been classified into conventional, intelligent, optimization, and hybrid techniques. A comparison has also been made of the different methods based on criteria such as tracking speed, efficiency, cost, stability, and complexity of implementation. From the literature, it is clear that hybrid techniques are highly efficient compared to conventional methods but are more complex in design and more expensive than the... [more]

Alessandro Fontanella, Giulia Da Pra, Marco Belloli
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade design, control, low-Reynolds airfoil, wind tunnel, wind turbine
In this paper we report about the design and validation of a 1.2 m wind turbine rotor with fixed blade pitch. The wind turbine is a scaled version of the DTU 10 MW. Integrated design of dimensional scaling laws, blade aerodynamics, and turbine control is carried out to reproduce blade loading and interaction with atmospheric boundary layer of the reference turbine, despite challenges posed by the great reduction in chord-based Reynolds number. The rotor is verified with numerical simulations in OpenFAST and wind tunnel testing. The servo-aerodynamic design approach proposed in this article is shown to be successful for small-scale wind turbine models for use in experiments about wakes and floating wind.

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current sharing control, dynamic hybrid compensator, parallel PSFB
The phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter has been widely used in power supply modules due to its simple control and high output power. However, with the market’s increasing demand for higher power sources, the PSFB converter needs to face challenges in increasing its output power level. Compared to redesigning a larger power module or a larger single converter, it will be more cost-effective to achieve a higher power output by paralleling the existing converters. However, due to the manufacturing differences in circuit components, the output imbalance in parallel PSFB converter systems may damage the power modules. Thus, the influence of differences in circuit components is analyzed in this paper, and it is found that the leakage inductance and transformer ratio are the main factors resulting in errors in current sharing control. Consequently, a dynamic hybrid compensator (DHC) is proposed in this paper, that can significantly reduce the error in current sharing control via the c... [more]
