An Improved Microseismic Signal Denoising Method of Rock Failure for Deeply Buried Energy Exploration
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: denoising, energy exploration, microseismic event, rock burst, wavelet transform
Microseismic monitoring has become a well-known technique for predicting the mechanisms of rock failure in deeply buried energy exploration, in which noise has a great influence on microseismic monitoring results. We proposed an improved microseismic denoising method based on different wavelet coefficients of useful signal and noise components. First, according to the selection of an appropriate wavelet threshold and threshold function, the useful signal part of original microseismic signal was decomposed many times and reconstructed to achieve denoising. Subsequently, synthetic signals of different types (microseismic noise, microseismic current, microseismic noise current) and with various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs, −10~10) were used as test data. Evaluation indicators (mean absolute error μ and standard deviation error σ) were established to compare the denoising effect of different denoising methods and verify that the improved method is more effective than the traditional denoi... Combustion Characteristics of Hydrogen/Air Mixtures in a Plasma-Assisted Micro Combustor
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chemical kinetics, dielectric barrier discharge, flame wall interaction, ionization degree, microburners, microscale combustion, plasma, plasma actuator, plasma assisted combustion, sinusoidal discharge
This work performs an analysis of plasma-assisted non-premixed H2-air flames in Y-shaped micro combustors in the presence of field emission dielectric barrier discharge (FE-DBD) plasma actuators. The combustion, flow, and heat transfer characteristics are numerically investigated, and the effect of sinusoidal plasma discharges on combustion performance is examined at various equivalence ratios (φ). A coupled plasma and chemical kinetic model is implemented, using a zero-dimensional model based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation and the ZDPlasKin toolbox to compute net charges and radical generation rates. The estimated body forces, radical production rates, and power densities in the plasma regions are then coupled with hydrogen combustion in the microchannel. Plasma-assisted combustion reveals improvements in flame length and maximum gas temperature. The results demonstrate that FE-DBDs can enhance mixing and complete the combustion of unreacted fuel, preventing flame extinctio... [more]

Smart Protection System for Microgrids with Grid-Connected and Islanded Capabilities Based on an Adaptive Algorithm
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: adaptive protection systems, directional overcurrent relays, distributed generation, metaheuristics, microgrids
This work proposes a smart protection system for microgrids, which relies on an adaptive metaheuristic for the automatic calculation of optimal settings for directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs). The adaptive fuzzy directional bat algorithm (AFDBA) associated with a fuzzy inference system (FIS) is used for this purpose. A prominent advantage of this solution is that there is no need for an initial tuning of the parameters associated with the algorithm, unlike many traditional approaches reported in the literature. Such a metaheuristic is used in the conception of an adaptive protection system (APS) in the context of a microgrid while taking into account the connection status of distributed generation (DG) units under distinct scenarios. A performance comparison with a protection system with fixed optimal settings (PSFOS) is also presented. The results demonstrate that the proposed APS outperforms the PSFOS while providing faster response, higher reliability and less susceptibility to... [more]

Intermittent renewable energy is becoming increasingly popular, as storing stationary and mobile energy remains a critical focus of attention. Although electricity cannot be stored on any scale, it can be converted to other kinds of energies that can be stored and then reconverted to electricity on demand. Such energy storage systems can be based on batteries, supercapacitors, flywheels, thermal modules, compressed air, and hydro storage. This survey article explores several aspects of energy storage. First, we define the primary difficulties and goals associated with energy storage. Second, we discuss several strategies employed for energy storage and the criteria used to identify the most appropriate technology. In addition, we address the current issues and limitations of energy storage approaches. Third, we shed light on the battery technologies, which are most frequently used in a wide range of applications for energy storage. The usage and types of batteries are described alongsi... [more]

A Comparison Study of Hydro-Compact Generators with Horizontal Spiral Turbines (HSTs) and a Three-Blade Turbine Used in Irrigation Canals
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrical power, spiral turbine, torque
This study aimed to present the experimental results of two types of turbines and attachments used in a hydro-compact generator. Two Horizontal Spiral Turbines (HSTs) with blade angles of eighteen and twenty-one degrees, respectively, and a three-blade turbine were tested and experimented in a laboratory at five levels of water flow rate ranging from 1−2 m/s. After the efficiency and torque values of each turbine were identified, they were installed in two 200 W power generator systems: (1) with a “diffuser” attachment; and (2) with an “in-line+diffuser+nozzle chamber” attachment, and tested in a local irrigation canal with 1.2 m/s. The results from the laboratory indicated that the HST with a twenty-one degree blade angle had 38.10% efficiency at the water flow rate of 2 m/s. It could reach 120.0 rpm and produced 212 Nm of torque. The results from the field experiment revealed that the combination of the power generator with the twenty-one degree blade angle HST and the in-line + diff... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: braided river delta, coal-bearing source rock, delta plain, depositional model, Middle–Late Triassic, Mungaroo Formation, North Carnarvon Basin
The sedimentary facies, architecture, and depositional mechanism of deltaic systems have been one of the global research hotspots in recent decades; however, the detailed distribution, sedimentary evolution, source rock potential, and major control factors of the coal-bearing shallow-water delta are still unclear. A typical shallow-water braided delta with coal-bearing source rocks developed in the Middle−Late Triassic Mungaroo Formation of the North Carnarvon Basin, which can be a good study area for an analysis of coal-bearing source rocks. In this study, the sedimentary facies, distribution and evolution, and coal-bearing source rock features of the Triassic strata were analyzed based on the integrated study of wireline logs, drilled cores, thin sections, seismic facies and attributes, and geochemical data. A range of shallow-water delta sedimentary facies was identified, including the proximal delta plain channel/interdistributary bay, distal delta plain channel/interdistributary b... [more]

Integrated Policies to Reduce Australia’s Electricity Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions to Net Zero by 2050
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Australian energy policy, decarbonisation, emissions reduction, market mechanisms, net zero electricity, policy mechanisms, power generation
Recent events within the Australian National Electricity Market have demonstrated that the system of an energy-only market (a market that only compensates power that has been produced) is no longer fit for purpose. The rate of change in installed capacity and generation requires better planning to ensure reliability is maintained at the lowest total system cost during the transition to net zero. Australian National Electricity Market participants will need sufficient incentives and confidence to invest in new capacity. This paper assesses a “no constraints” scenario and recommends a range of policy and market mechanisms that could be utilized to achieve a net zero National Electricity Market in Australia by 2050. This paper adopts the perspective of total system cost, which allows multiple factors relating to decision-making to be incorporated. In the absence of a carbon price, this paper seeks to put forward technology-based policy and market mechanisms to incentivise the changes requ... [more]

Clustering Method for Load Demand to Shorten the Time of Annual Simulation
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clustering, DBSCAN, RLC, unit commitment
UC (unit commitment) for grid operation has been attracting increasing attention due to the growing interest in global warming. Compared to other methods, MILP, which is one of the calculation methods for UC, has the disadvantage of a long calculation time, although it is more accurate in considering constraints and in finding solutions. However, RLCs (representative load curves) require a more accurate clustering method to select representative dates because the calculation results vary greatly depending on the clustering method. DBSCAN, one of the clustering methods, has the feature that the clustering accuracy varies depending on two parameters. Therefore, this paper proposes two algorithms to automatically determine the two parameters of DBSCAN to perform RLCs using DBSCAN. In addition, since DBSCAN has the feature of being able to represent different data as two-dimensional elements, a survey of the data to be used as clustering was conducted. As a result, the proposed algorithms... [more]

The Effect of Salty Environments on the Degradation Behavior and Mechanical Properties of Nafion Membranes
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: degradation, Fenton’s test, Fuel Cells, marine environment, maritime transportation, NaCl concentration, Nafion, PEMFC, temperature
The application of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) in maritime transportation is currently in the spotlight due to stringent emissions regulations and the establishment of a carbon trading system. However, salt in the marine environment can accelerate the degradation of proton-exchange membranes (PEM), which are the core component of PEMFCs. In this study, the effect of the NaCl concentration and temperature on the degradation of Nafion, the benchmark PEMFC membrane, was analyzed ex situ by accelerated degradation using Fenton’s test. The membrane properties were studied by mass change, fluoride ion emission, FTIR spectroscopy, and tensile test. The results showed that the degradation of Nafion membranes increased with the increase in temperature and NaCl concentration. Further studies revealed that Nafion produces C=O bonds during the degradation process. Additionally, it was found that sodium ions replace hydrogen ions in degraded Nafion fragments based on analysis of th... [more]

Modular and Transferable Machine Learning for Heat Management and Reuse in Edge Data Centers
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: edge data center, heat management, heat reuse, meta-learning, modular machine learning, recurrent neural network, transfer learning, transferable machine learning
This study investigates the use of transfer learning and modular design for adapting a pretrained model to optimize energy efficiency and heat reuse in edge data centers while meeting local conditions, such as alternative heat management and hardware configurations. A Physics-Informed Data-Driven Recurrent Neural Network (PIDD RNN) is trained on a small scale-model experiment of a six-server data center to control cooling fans and maintain the exhaust chamber temperature within safe limits. The model features a hierarchical regularizing structure that reduces the degrees of freedom by connecting parameters for related modules in the system. With a RMSE value of 1.69, the PIDD RNN outperforms both a conventional RNN (RMSE: 3.18), and a State Space Model (RMSE: 2.66). We investigate how this design facilitates transfer learning when the model is fine-tuned over a few epochs to small dataset from a second set-up with a server located in a wind tunnel. The transferred model outperforms a m... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: building energy design, geometry generation, heating energy assessment, modular space arrangement
The building industry is responsible for a significant degree of energy consumption in the world, causing negative climate changes and energy supply uncertainties due to low energy efficiency as well as the high resource demand of construction. Consequently, energy design optimization has become an important research field. Passive design strategies are one of the most definitive factors concerning energy-related building development. The given architectural problem calls for a method that can create all potentially feasible building geometries, thus guaranteeing the optimal solution which is addressed in the current paper. To reach this requirement, the necessity of a modular space arrangement system and architectural selection rules were determined, focusing on the relationship between the rules and the generation of geometries with mathematical rigor. Next, the architecture-based congruency analysis performed, further reduced the number of simulation cases. With the simulations, it... [more]

Keywords: analytic hierarchy process, criteria, decommissioning, multicriteria risk assessment, platforms, ranking models
Companies are striving to optimize the decommissioning process of oil and gas facilities in order to reduce overall costs. Various options and criteria for making decisions on the liquidation of objects are considered, which are based on a multicriteria approach that allows optimizing this complex process. The most important characteristics of a reliable model for optimizing options for decommissioning oil and gas facilities are defined as follows: the option should take into account qualitative and quantitative criteria. To minimize the subjectivity of human judgment, a systematic poll of skilled performers should be conducted using a well-structured technique. It is shown that multicriteria decision analysis can be considered as an adequate model for choosing options for decommissioning oil and gas assets. A Modified JFNK for Solving the HTR Steady State Secondary Circuit Problem
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: HTR, JFNK, secondary circuit, SG
A nuclear power plant is a complex coupling system, which features multi-physics coupling between reactor physics and thermal-hydraulics in the reactor core, as well as the multi-circuit coupling between the primary circuit and the secondary circuit by the shared steam generator (SG). Especially in the pebble-bed modular HTR nuclear power plant, different nuclear steam supply modules are further coupled together through the shared main steam pipes and the related equipment in the secondary circuit, since the special configuration of multiple reactor modules connects to a steam turbine. The JFNK (Jacobian-Free Newton−Krylov) method provides a promising coupling framework to solve the whole HTR nuclear power plant problem, due to its excellent convergence rate and strong robustness. In this work, the JFNK method was modified and applied to the steady-state calculation of the HTR secondary circuit, which plays an important role in simultaneous solutions for the whole HTR nuclear power pla... The Impact of Battery Storage on Power Flow and Economy in an Automated Transactive Energy Market
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage, demand response, DER integration, distributed energy resources (DER), local energy market, transactive energy
This article explores the use of battery energy storage in a transactive energy approach for a heavily solar-penetrated community. We hypothesize that the efficient market interactions between independently acting, fully automated agents (some equipped with battery energy storage) can result in both bill savings and improvements in power flow, without explicitly optimizing for power flow ahead of time. A test setting of nine typical residential prosumers and one heavily loaded prosumer is used. The heavily loaded prosumer initially experiences multiple undervoltage violations, and a 13.5 kWh battery is installed to alleviate the problem. Two profile-shaping strategies are compared. The first scenario uses greedy control that maximizes self-sufficiency, while the second scenario uses a local market to enable energy trading between participants and a rule-based trading and management agent for control. The results show that the first scenario made minimal improvements to power flow, but... [more]

Effect of Macroscopic Turbulent Gust on the Aerodynamic Performance of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gust, macroturbulence, URANS, vertical axis wind turbine
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) have proven to be suitable for changing wind conditions, particularly in urban settings. In this paper, a 2D URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes) numerical analysis is employed for an H-Darrieus VAWT. A turbulent domain is created through systemically randomising the inlet velocity to create macro-turbulence in front of the VAWT. The parameters for spatial and temporal randomisation of velocity and its effects on the turbine performance are studied for a mean free stream velocity, U∞ = 10 m/s, and a tip speed ratio (TSR) of 4.1. The mean Coefficient of power (Cp) for randomised fluctuation of 2 m/s and half-cycle randomisation update frequency is 0.411 and for uniform inlet velocity is 0.400. The Cp vs. Tip Speed ratio plot suggests that the optimal tip speed ratio for operation is around 4.1 for this particular wind turbine of diameter 1 m, chord 0.06 m, and NACA 0018 airfoils.
