March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anode-supported solid oxide fuel cell, artificial neural network, multi-armed bandit algorithm, Optimization
Anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) model based on artificial neural network (ANN) and optimized design variables were modeled. The input parameters of the anode-supported SOFC model developed in this study are as follows: current density, temperature, electrolyte thickness, anode thickness, anode porosity, and cathode thickness. Voltage was estimated from the SOFC model with the input parameters. Numerical results show that the SOFC model constructed in this study can represent the actual SOFC characteristics very well. There are four design parameters to be optimized: electrolyte, anode, cathode thickness, and anode porosity. To derive the optimal combination of the design parameters, we have used a multi-armed bandit algorithm (MAB), and developed a methodology for deriving near-optimal parameter set without searching for all possible parameter sets.

Ryszard Dindorf, Piotr Wos
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy-saving forging process, hydraulic forging press, open die forging
The study deals with the energy-saving process of hot open die elongation forging of heavy steel forgings on an 80 MN industrial hydraulic forging press. Three innovative energy-saving power supply solutions useful for industrial hydraulic forging presses were analyzsed. The energy-saving power supply of hydraulic forging presses consists in reducing electricity consumption by the electric motor driving the pumps, reducing the noise emitted by pumps and reducing leaks in hydraulic piston cylinders. The predicted forging force as a function of heavy steel forging heights for various deformation temperatures and strain rates was determined. A simulation model of the 80 MN hydraulic forging press is presented, which is useful for determining the time-varying parameters during the forging process. An energy-saving control for the hydraulic forging press based on the forging process parameters’ prediction has been developed. Real-time model predictive control (MPC) was developed based on mu... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: combination methodology of GHG abatement measures, defossilisation, energy transition, industrial transformation paths, industry modelling of greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement measures, sector model industry (SmInd)
The dynamic bottom-up modelling of greenhouse gas (GHG) abatement measures in industry makes it possible to derive consistent transformation paths on the basis of heterogeneous, process-specific developments. The main focus is on the development of a transparent methodology for small-scale modelling and combination of individual GHG abatement measures. In this way, interactions between GHG abatement measures are taken into account when deriving industrial transformation paths. The presented three-part methodological approach comprises the preparation (1) and implementation (2) of GHG abatement measures as well as the resulting effects on the output parameters (3) in a technology mix module. In order to consider interactions in the measures implementation, year-specific overall measure matrices are created and prioritised based on the GHG abatement costs. Finally, the three-part methodology is tested in a consistent technology mix scenario. The results show that the methodology enables... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D-simulation, deep Q-network, deep reinforcement learning, discrete element method, top-coal caving
In top-coal caving, the window control of hydraulic support is a key issue to the perfect economic benefit. The window is driven by the electro-hydraulic control system whose command is produced by the control model and the corresponding algorithm. However, the model of the window’s control is hard to establish, and the optimal policy of window action is impossible to calculate. This paper studies the issue theoretically and, based on the 3D simulation platform, proposes a deep reinforcement learning method to regulate the window action for top-coal caving. Then, the window control of top-coal caving is considered as the Markov decision process, for which the deep Q-network method of reinforcement learning is employed to regulate the window’s action effectively. In the deep Q-network, the reward of each step is set as the control criterion of the window action, and a four-layer fully connected neural network is used to approximate the optimal Q-value to get the optimal action of the wi... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agent-based modeling, business model test, electricity storage system, exploratory modeling analysis
Electricity storage systems (ESSs) are potential solutions to facilitate renewable energy transition. Lack of viable business models, as well as high levels of uncertainty in technology, economic, and institutional factors, form main barriers for wide implementation of ESSs worldwide and in the Netherlands. Therefore, the design of business models for an ESS is necessary for the development of ESSs. We elaborated on this problem before, and developed a design space for business models of ESSs in the context of the Netherlands. This conceptual paper provides a further view on barriers and uncertainties of ESS development in the Netherlands through the involvement of a business practitioner, elaboration of goals, objectives, and testing of ESS business model designs, suggests and provides a theoretical foundation for combining agent-based modeling and exploratory modeling analysis as a method to test and explore ESS business models, and provides an abstract conceptual agent-based model d... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: capillary pressure, condenser, cryogenic loop heat pipe (CLHP), evaporator, heat-transfer characteristics, pressure reduce reservoir (PRR), supercritical start-up, wick
Infrared detectors on satellites and spacecraft require cooling to increase their measurement sensitivity. To efficiently cool infrared detectors in a zero gravity environment and in limited spaces, a cryogenic loop heat pipe (CLHP) can be used to transfer heat over a certain distance by the capillary forces generated from porous wicks without a mechanical power source. The CLHP presented in this study transfers the heat load to a condenser 0.5 m away from an evaporator at temperatures below −150 °C. The CLHP with two evaporators includes a subloop for initial start-up, and uses a pressure reduction reservoir (PRR) for the supercritical start-up from room to cryogenic temperature. Nitrogen is used as the working fluid to verify the thermal behavior of the CLHP, and the heat-transfer capacity according to the nitrogen charging pressure of the PRR is investigated. To simulate a cryogenic environment, the CLHP is installed inside a space environment simulator, including a single-stage GM... [more]
Empowering Vulnerable Consumers to Join Renewable Energy Communities—Towards an Inclusive Design of the Clean Energy Package
Florian Hanke, Jens Lowitzsch
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Clean Energy Package, consumer empowerment, energy justice, energy transition, renewable energy community, vulnerable consumer
The unequal distribution of costs and benefits of the energy transition is a challenge for energy justice and energy policy. Although the empowerment of consumers to participate in renewable energy communities (RECs) has great potential for a just energy transition, vulnerable consumers remain underrepresented in RE projects. The recast of the European renewable energy directive obliges the European Member States to facilitate the participation of vulnerable consumers and support their inclusion in its “enabling framework” for prosumership. However, the type and specific design of corresponding measures remains unclear. Against this background this article investigates consumer empowerment in a vulnerability context. In particular we stress the need to understand how vulnerability affects participation in RECs to inform both policy makers and practitioners on its specificities and restrictions for the “enabling framework”. To prevent the inclusion of vulnerable consumers in RECs from r... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery, DC rail transit system, energy management, flywheel, Genetic Algorithm, Optimization, peak-demand reduction, supercapacitor, train
In this paper, a dual-stage modeling and optimization framework has been developed to obtain an optimal combination and size of wayside energy storage systems (WESSs) for application in DC rail transportation. Energy storage technologies may consist of a standalone battery, a standalone supercapacitor, a standalone flywheel, or a combination of these. Results from the dual-stage modeling and optimization process have been utilized for deducing an application-specific composition of type and size of the WESSs. These applications consist of different percentages of energy saving due to regenerative braking, voltage regulation, peak demand reduction, estimated payback period, and system resiliency. In the first stage, sizes of the ESSs have been estimated using developed detailed mathematical models, and optimized using the Genetic Algorithm (GA). In the second stage, the respective sizes of ESSs are simulated by developing an all-inclusive model of the transit system, ESS and ESS managem... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANFIS, geographic smoothing, photovoltaic system, variability reduction index, wavelet transform
The short-term variability of photovoltaic (PV) system-generated power due to ambient conditions, such as passing clouds, represents a key challenge for network planners and operators. Such variability can be reduced using a geographical smoothing technique based on installing multiple PV systems over certain locations at distances of meters to kilometers. To accurately estimate the PV system’s generated power during cloud events, a variability reduction index (VRI), which is a function of several parameters, should be calculated precisely. In this paper, the Wavelet Transform Technique (WTT) along with Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) are used to develop new models to estimate the PV system’s power output during cloud events. In this context, irradiance data collected from one PV system along with other parameters, including ambient conditions, were used to develop the proposed models. Ultimately, the models were validated through their application on a 0.7 km2 PV plant w... [more]

Keywords: cooling system, dynamic programming, metal-air battery, receding horizon control, state variables, uninterruptible power supply
As application of electric energy have expanded, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) concept has attracted considerable attention, and new UPS technologies have been developed. Despite the extensive research on the batteries for UPS, conventional batteries are still being used in large-scale UPS systems. However, lead-acid batteries, which are currently widely adopted in UPS, require frequent maintenance and are relatively expensive as compared with some other kinds of batteries, like metal-air batteries. In previous work, we designed a novel metal-air battery, with low cost and easy maintenance for large-scale UPS applications. An extensive analysis was performed to apply our metal-air battery to the hybrid UPS model. In this study, we focus on including an optimal control system for high battery performance. We developed an algorithm based on receding horizon control (RHC) for each fan of the cooling system. The algorithm reflects the operation properties of the metal-air battery... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: biogas power plant, differential evolutionary optimization, feedstock cost, feedstock mix optimization, transportation cost
In this paper, an optimization model for biogas power plant feedstock mixture with respect to feedstock and transportation costs using a differential evolution algorithm (DEA) is presented. A mathematical model and an optimization problem are presented. The proposed model introduces an optimal mixture of different feedstock combinations in a biogas power plant and informs about the maximal transportation distance for each feedstock before being unprofitable. In the case study, the proposed model is applied to five most commonly used feedstock in biogas power plants in Croatia and Hungary. The research is performed for a situation when the biogas power plant is not owned by the farm owner but by a third party. An optimization procedure is performed for each scenario with a cost of methane production that does not exceed 0.75 EUR/m3 in 1 MWe biogas power plant. The results show the needed yearly amounts and the maximum transportation distance of each feedstock.

Keywords: closed fuel cycle, feedback effects, homogenous reactor, low carbon technologies, molten salt reactors, nuclear energy, nuclear reactors, reactor control, spent nuclear fuel, Sustainability
The energy trilemma and UN SDG 7 form the key drivers for the future of all kinds of energy research. In nuclear technology, molten salt reactors are an interesting option, since they can offer a game-changing approach to deliver an attractive, highly sustainable option for a zero-carbon society by providing sufficient breeding for a self-sustained long-term operation based on spent nuclear fuel from existing reactors while being able to be controlled ideally by inherent processes. To achieve these goals, several basic challenges have already been identified and worked on; demonstration of sufficient breeding and development of a demand driven salt clean up system. This study follows up on the opportunity for reactor control based on inherent feedback mechanisms. It is demonstrated that the investigated sodium chloride-uranium chloride-based systems can feasibly deliver a thermal feedback effect, which is strong enough, to compensate for the critically change due to breeding and fissio... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy access, energy index, energy indicators, energy poverty measurement, Latin America, multidimensional energy poverty index
Energy poverty is a serious problem affecting many people in the world. To address it and alleviate it, the first action is to identify and measure the intensity of the population living in this condition. This paper seeks to generate information regarding the actual state of energy poverty by answering the research question: is it possible to measure the intensity of energy poverty between different Latin American countries with sufficient and equivalent data? To achieve this, the Multidimensional Energy Poverty Index (), proposed by Nussbaumer et al., was used. The results present two levels of lack of access to energy services: Energy Poverty (EP) and Extreme Energy Poverty (EEP). The last one, is a concept introduced by the authors to evaluate energy poverty using. Results of people living on EP (EEP within parentheses) are as follow: Colombia 29% (18%), Dominican Republic 32% (14%), Guatemala 76% (61%), Haiti 98% (91%), Honduras 72% (59%), Mexico 30% (17%) and Peru 65% (42%). Optimal upscaling of a high-resolution static geologic model that reflects the flow performance of the reservoir is important for reasons such as time and calculation efficiency. In this study, we demonstrate that honoring reservoir heterogeneity is critical in predicting accurate production and reducing the time and cost of running reservoir flow simulations for the Hunton Group carbonate. We integrated three-dimensional (3D) seismic data, well logs, thin sections, outcrops, multiscale fracture studies, discrete fracture networks, and geostatistical methods to create a 100 × 150 × 1 ft gridded representative geologic model. We calibrated our gridded porosity and permeability parameters, including the evaluation of fractures, by history matching the simulated production rate and cumulative production volumes from a baseline fine-scale model generated from petrophysical and production data obtained from five wells. We subsequently reperformed the simulations using a suite of coarser gri... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Hydrogen, multi-energy systems, power system economics, renewable energy generation, whole system modelling
Hydrogen presents an attractive option to decarbonise the present energy system. Hydrogen can extend the usage of the existing gas infrastructure with low-cost energy storability and flexibility. Excess electricity generated by renewables can be converted into hydrogen. In this paper, a novel multi-energy systems optimisation model was proposed to maximise investment and operating synergy in the electricity, heating, and transport sectors, considering the integration of a hydrogen system to minimise the overall costs. The model considers two hydrogen production processes: (i) gas-to-gas (G2G) with carbon capture and storage (CCS), and (ii) power-to-gas (P2G). The proposed model was applied in a future Great Britain (GB) system. Through a comparison with the system without hydrogen, the results showed that the G2G process could reduce £3.9 bn/year, and that the P2G process could bring £2.1 bn/year in cost-savings under a 30 Mt carbon target. The results also demonstrate the system impli... [more]
A New Power Sharing Scheme of Multiple Microgrids and an Iterative Pairing-Based Scheduling Method

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage system, microgrid, microgrid aggregator, multiple microgrids, power sharing schedule
As the numbers of microgrids (MGs) and prosumers are increasing, many research efforts are proposing various power sharing schemes for multiple MGs (MMGs). Power sharing between MMGs can reduce the investment and operating costs of MGs. However, since MGs exchange power through distribution lines, this may have an adverse effect on the utility, such as an increase in peak demand, and cause local overcurrent issues. Therefore, this paper proposes a power sharing scheme that is beneficial to both MGs and the utility. This research assumes that in an MG, the energy storage system (ESS) is the major controllable resource. In the proposed power sharing scheme, an MG that sends power should discharge at least as much power from the ESS as the power it sends to other MGs, in order to actually decrease the total system demand. With these assumptions, methods for determining the power sharing schedule are proposed. Firstly, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP)-based centralized approach is... [more]
Validation of GreenH2armony® as a Tool for the Computation of Harmonised Life-Cycle Indicators of Hydrogen

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: acidification, carbon footprint, energy footprint, harmonisation, Hydrogen, life cycle assessment
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology is often used to check the environmental suitability of hydrogen energy systems, usually involving comparative studies. However, these comparative studies are typically affected by inconsistent methodological choices between the case studies under comparison. In this regard, protocols for the harmonisation of methodological choices in LCA of hydrogen are available. The step-by-step application of these protocols to a large number of case studies has already resulted in libraries of harmonised carbon, energy, and acidification footprints of hydrogen. In order to foster the applicability of these harmonisation protocols, a web-based software for the calculation of harmonised life-cycle indicators of hydrogen has recently been developed. This work addresses—for the first time—the validation of such a tool by checking the deviation between the available libraries of harmonised carbon, energy, and acidification footprints of hydrogen and the corre... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic emission, condition monitoring, cross gain function, diesel engines, fuel injection pumps
The quality or reliability of diagnostics is understood as obtaining the most likely diagnosis, and finding possible causes leading to incorrect operation of the system. In real engine running conditions it is often very difficult. Dependable methods providing the most reliable diagnoses have not been developed yet. It becomes more and more important to identify the limit state in condition monitoring—the state that should not be exceeded because continued operation of such a machine is not advisable for technical, economic, or operational safety reasons. The authors have implemented a method using acoustic emission signal analysis for the identification of the injection pump limit state in a working engine. The use of the cross gain function allows one to reliably diagnose limit conditions related to the wear of the precision pair in injection pumps of running engines, working as energy transmission systems on ships and in land-based power stations. The paper draws the results for two... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agglomerated structure, high-rate, layered cathode, lithium-ion batteries
LiNixCoyMnzO2 (LNCM)-layered materials are considered the most promising cathode for high-energy lithium ion batteries, but suffer from poor rate capability and short lifecycle. In addition, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (NCM 111) is considered one of the most widely used LNCM cathodes because of its high energy density and good safety. Herein, a kind of NCM 111 with semi-closed structure was designed by controlling the amount of urea, which possesses high rate capability and long lifespan, exhibiting 140.9 mAh·g−1 at 0.85 A·g−1 and 114.3 mAh·g−1 at 1.70 A·g−1, respectively. The semi-closed structure is conducive to the infiltration of electrolytes and fast lithium ion-transfer inside the electrode material, thus improving the rate performance of the battery. Our work may provide an effective strategy for designing layered-cathode materials with high rate capability.

Keywords: combined heat and power system, optimization scheduling, scenario method, temporal dependence, wind power uncertainty
The wind−heat conflict and wind power uncertainty are the main factors leading to the phenomenon of wind curtailment during the heating period in the northern region of China. In this paper, a multi-time scale optimal scheduling strategy for combined heat and power system is proposed. Considering the temporal dependence of wind power fluctuation, the intra-day wind power scenario generation method is put forward, and both day-ahead and intra-day optimization scheduling models based on the scenario method are established to maximize the system’s revenue. The case analyzes the impacts of the initial heat storage capacity of a heat storage device and different scheduling strategies on system revenue. It is verified that the scheduling strategy can better adapt to wind power uncertainty and improve the absorption capacity of wind power, while ensuring the safety and economical efficiency of system operation.
A Hybrid Nonlinear Forecasting Strategy for Short-Term Wind Speed

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Gaussian process, short-term wind speed prediction, state space equation, unscented Kalman filter
The ability to predict wind speeds is very important for the security and stability of wind farms and power system operations. Wind speeds typically vary slowly over time, which makes them difficult to forecast. In this study, a hybrid nonlinear estimation approach combining Gaussian process (GP) and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) is proposed to predict dynamic changes of wind speed and improve forecasting accuracy. The proposed approach can provide both point and interval predictions for wind speed. Firstly, the GP method is established as the nonlinear transition function of a state space model, and the covariance obtained from the GP predictive model is used as the process noise. Secondly, UKF is used to solve the state space model and update the initial prediction of short-term wind speed. The proposed hybrid approach can adjust dynamically in conjunction with the distribution changes. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed hybrid approach, the persistence model, GP mo... Keywords: citizen involvement, co-ownership in renewable energies, energy community (EC), renewable energy sources (RESs)
Innovations in technical, financial, and social areas are crucial prerequisites for an effective and sustainable energy transition. In this context, the construction of a new energy structure and the motivation of the consumer towards a change in their consumption behaviours to balance demand with a volatile energy supply are important issues. At the same time, Consumer Stock Ownership Plans (CSOPs) in renewable energies sources (RESs) have proven to be an essential cornerstone in the overall success of energy transition. Indeed, when consumers acquire ownership in RES, they become prosumers, participating in the phase of production and distribution of energy. Prosumers provide benefits by (1) generating a part of the energy they consume, (2) reducing their overall expenditure for energy, and (3) receiving a second source of income from the sale of excess production. Supporting Consumer Co-Ownership in Renewable Energies (SCORE) is an ongoing Horizon 2020 project with the aim of overco... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy utilization, Exergy, Genetic Algorithm, multi-objective optimization, ORC
In the last decade, particular attention has been paid to the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) power plant, a technology that implements a classical steam Rankine cycle using low-boiling fluid of organic origin. Depending on the specific application and the choice of the designer, the ORC can be optimized using one or several criteria. In this study, a novel criterion called exergy utilization index (XUI) is defined and used to maximize the utilization of an energy source in the ORC system. The maximization of the proposed indicator is equivalent to bring the heat carrier outlet temperature to the ambient temperature as close as possible. In the studied case, the XUI is applied along with the total heat transfer area of the system, and the multi-objective optimization is performed in order to determine the optimal operating conditions of the ORC.
