Effect of Suction and Discharge Conditions on the Unsteady Flow Phenomena of Axial-Flow Reactor Coolant Pump
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial-flow pump, dynamic fluid force, pressure pulsation, reactor coolant pump, rotor-stator interaction, suction and discharge conditions, unsteady flow
In order to study the effects of the suction and discharge conditions on the hydraulic performance and unsteady flow phenomena of an axial-flow reactor coolant pump (RCP), three RCP models with different suction and discharge configurations are analyzed by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The CFD results are validated by experimental data. The hydraulic performance of the three RCP models shows little difference. However, the unsteady flow phenomena of RCP are significantly affected by the variation of suction and discharge conditions. Compared with that of Model E-S (baseline, elbow-single nozzle), the pressure pulsation in rotating frame of Model S-S (straight pipe-single nozzle) and Model E-D (elbow-double nozzles) is weakened in different degrees and forms, due to the more uniform flow fields upstream and downstream of the impeller, respectively. It indicates that the generalized rotor-stator interaction (RSI) actually exists between the rotating impeller and all stationa... [more]

High Frequency Resonance Damping Method for Voltage Source Converter Based on Voltage Feedforward Control
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: damping control, high frequency resonance, parallel compensated grid, voltage source converter
High frequency resonance (HFR) is a subsistent problem which affects the operation of the voltage source converter (VSC) connected to the parallel compensated grid. The appearance of HFR introduces a significant high frequency component in the grid voltage, thereby the operation of VSC system will be seriously affected. For enhancing the operation capability of VSC system, an HFR damping method based on the voltage feedforward control is proposed in this paper, which can reshape the VSC system impedance effectively in a wideband range. Besides, different with the existing HFR damping methods, the proposed method introduces a correction factor instead of the series virtual impedance with fixed value, so that the effect of impedance reshaping is irrelevant to the parameters of controlled object. In addition, this paper analyzes the fundamental control performance of VSC system after equipping the proposed method, for verifying that the proposed method will not worsen the fundamental cont... A Virtual Negative Resistor Based Common Mode Current Resonance Suppression Method for Three-Level Grid-Tied Inverter with Discontinuous PWM
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: common mode current resonance suppression, CPWM, DPWM, virtual negative resistor
The output LC filter of a photovoltaic (PV) string three-level grid-tied inverter that connects the filter capacitor neutral point to dc-link capacitor neutral point can reduce the common-mode (CM) current injected to the grid by letting the CM current circulate within the inverter. However, the internal CM current may resonate because of the existence of the resonant frequency of the internal CM LC circuit. Compared with the traditional continuous pulse-width modulation (CPWM), the resonance can be worse if discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) is applied, for the zero sequence quantity of DPWM contains more harmonics than that of CPWM. In this paper, a virtual negative resistor based common mode current resonance suppression method for a three-level grid-tied inverter is proposed to overcome the CM current resonance problem in DPWM application. Different positions of the virtual negative resistor in the equivalent CM circuit with different feedback variables are analyzed theore... [more]

Low Frequency Magnetic Fields Emitted by High-Power Charging Systems
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: electro-mobility, high-power charging, magnetic flux density
The new generation of fast charging systems faces a formidable technological challenge, aiming to drastically reduce the time needed to recharge an electric vehicle as a way to tackle the range anxiety issue. To achieve this, high power (up to 350 kW) is transferred from the grid to the vehicle, leading to potentially high values of low frequency magnetic fields. This study presents the results of measurements of magnetic flux density (B-field) emitted by two different high power charging systems. The electric vehicle used for the recharge was able to digest up to 83 kW of delivered power. The test procedure was designed to identify the locations where the maximum B-field levels were recorded and to measure the exposure indices according to reference levels for general public exposure defined in the Council Recommendation 1999/519/EC. Measurements in close proximity to the power cabinets during the recharge revealed that, at some points, exposure indices were higher than 100%, leading... [more]

Do People Drive Light Cars Carefully? A Comparative Study of Risky Driving Behaviors between Light Cars and Others
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: dangerous driving, light car, risky driving behavior, speeding, travel pattern
The first aim of this study was to examine whether people drive light cars carefully in comparison with standard-sized cars. The second aim was to evaluate the factors that influence these risky driving indicators. Data were collected from 49 drivers in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, from November 2014 to January 2015. Risky driving behaviors included; (1) speeding, (2) high speed on a non-expressway, (3) high speed on an expressway, (4) high right/left turn rate, (5) long travel, (6) driving at night, (7) driving on an expressway, and (8) driving frequency. At first, the frequency or number of these indicators was compared between the light car group and the standard size car group by a t-test. Second, regression models were established to evaluate the influence of age, gender, living area, and car classification on each risky indicator. The t-test results showed that there was no significant difference in risky driving behaviors between the light car group and the others. The regression mo... [more]

Turbulence Modeling Insights into Supercritical Nitrogen Mixing Layers
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Liquid Rocket Engines, supercritical injection, turbulence modeling
In Liquid Rocket Engines, higher combustion efficiencies come at the cost of the propellants exceeding their critical point conditions and entering the supercritical domain. The term fluid is used because, under these conditions, there is no longer a clear distinction between a liquid and a gas phase. The non-conventional behavior of thermophysical properties makes the modeling of supercritical fluid flows a most challenging task. In the present work, a Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) computational method following an incompressible but variable density approach is devised on which the performance of several turbulence models is compared in conjunction with a high accuracy multi-parameter equation of state. In addition, a suitable methodology to describe transport properties accounting for dense fluid corrections is applied. The results are validated against experimental data, making it clear that there is no trend between turbulence model complexity and the quality of the produ... [more]

Scribing Method for Carbon Perovskite Solar Modules
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon, module, perovskite, screen-printing, scribing, solar cells, up-scaling
The fully printable carbon triple-mesoscopic perovskite solar cell (C-PSC) has already demonstrated good efficiency and long-term stability, opening the possibility of lab-to-fab transition. Modules based on C-PSC architecture have been reported and, at present, are achieved through the accurate registration of each of the patterned layers using screen-printing. Modules based on this approach were reported with geometric fill factor (g-FF) as high as 70%. Another approach to create the interconnects, the so-called scribing method, was reported to achieve more than 90% g-FF for architectures based on evaporated metal contacts, i.e., without a carbon counter electrode. Here, for the first time, we adopt the scribing method to selectively remove materials within a C-PSC. This approach allowed a deep and selective scribe to open an aperture from the transparent electrode through all the layers, including the blocking layer, enabling a direct contact between the electrodes in the interconne... New HVAC Sustainability Index—TWI (Total Water Impact)
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air-cooled condenser, evaporative, HVAC, TWI, water-cooled condenser
Sales of air conditioning are growing rapidly in buildings, more than tripling between 1990 and 2016. This energy use for air conditioning comes from a combination of rising temperatures, rising population and economic growth. Energy demand for climate control will triple by 2050, consuming more energy than that currently consumed altogether by the United States, the European Union and Japan. This increase in energy will directly impact water consumption, either to directly cool a condenser of an equipment or to serve indirectly as a basis for energy sources such as hydroelectric power that feed these heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Knowing the unique and growing importance of water, a new index, Total Water Impact (TWI) is presented, which allows a holistic comparison of the impact of water use on water, air and evaporative condensation climate systems. 200 and 500 TON (tons of refrigeration) air-cooled and water-cooled systems are theoretically compared to e... Determining the Load Inertia Contribution from Different Power Consumer Groups
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grid frequency stability, load inertia, power consumer groups, power system inertia, power system stability
Power system inertia is a vital part of power system stability. The inertia response within the first seconds after a power imbalance reduces the velocity of which the grid frequency changes. At present, large shares of power system inertia are provided by synchronously rotating masses of conventional power plants. A minor part of power system inertia is supplied by power consumers. The energy system transformation results in an overall decreasing amount of power system inertia. Hence, inertia has to be provided synthetically in future power systems. In depth knowledge about the amount of inertia provided by power consumers is very important for a future application of units supplying synthetic inertia. It strongly promotes the technical efficiency and cost effective application. A blackout in the city of Flensburg allows for a detailed research on the inertia contribution from power consumers. Therefore, power consumer categories are introduced and the inertia contribution is calculat... [more]

An Experimental Analysis of Soybean Straw Combustion on Both CO and NOX Emission Characteristics in a Tubular Furnace
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: combustion, energy consumption, pollutant discharge, soybean straw, tubular furnace
In this study, an experiment is conducted to explore the potential to protect both the environment and resource shortage of soybean straw, for combustion in a tubular furnace. Then, the combustion characteristics, gas emissions, and energy consumption of soybean straw are analyzed at a combustion temperature range of 773−1173 K. The results show that the total emissions of CO and NOX are the largest at a temperature of 873 K. For NOX, the emission time is significantly improved at temperatures of 973−1173 K. At high temperatures, the reaction of NOX with CO and coke reduces the total emission of NOX. The average weight loss rate at combustion temperatures of 973, 1073, and 1173 K increased by 27.38%, 61.47% and 77.97%, respectively, relative to that of 873 K. However, the energy consumption increases with the increase in combustion temperature, resulting in unnecessary waste. To get an optimal characteristic between energy utilization and pollutant discharge, a temperature range of 873... [more]

Techno-Economic Optimization of an Off-Grid Solar/Wind/Battery Hybrid System with a Novel Multi-Objective Differential Evolution Algorithm
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: decomposition, differential evolution, hybrid energy system, parameter adaptive mechanism, techno-economic optimization
Techno-economic optimization of a standalone solar/wind/battery hybrid system located in Xining, China, is the focus of this paper, and reliable and economic indicators are simultaneously employed to address the problem. To obtain a more precise Pareto set, a novel multi-objective differential evolution algorithm is proposed, where differential evolution with a parameter-adaptive mechanism is applied in the decomposition framework. The algorithm effectiveness is verified by performance comparisons on the benchmark test problems with two reference algorithms: a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm and a multi-objective evolution algorithm based on decomposition. The applicability of the proposed algorithm for the capacity-optimization problem is also validated by comparisons with the same reference algorithms above, where the true Pareto set of the problem is approximated by combining of the three algorithms through the non-dominant relationship. The results show the proposed algorit... [more]

Research on the Combined Control Strategy of Low Temperature Charging and Heating of Lithium-Ion Power Battery Based on Adaptive Fuzzy Control
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive fuzzy control strategy, combined control strategy, Li-ion battery, low-temperature charging, temperature-acceptable charging current curve
A low temperature environment will lead to the decrease of chemistry reaction rate and increase of the internal resistance of the lithium battery. In addition, the excessive charging current will cause the lithium to separate out and even the permanent attenuation of battery capacity. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a low-temperature charging heating combined control strategy, which takes the temperature acceptable charging current of the battery at low temperature as the charging current constraint and the maximum output power of the system as the power constraint. Firstly, a scheme of combined charging and heating control system is put forward. Secondly, the low temperature charging control strategy based on adaptive fuzzy control is established and then the model is simulated and analyzed in MATLAB software. At last, a Chroma 72,001 charge and discharge tester is used to conduct a low temperature test on 18,650 lithium iron phosphate battery monomers. The resul... [more]

Recipe of Lightweight Slurry with High Early Strength of the Resultant Cement Sheath
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cement sheath, cement slurry, compressive strength, microspheres, well cementing
Admixtures of mineral or waste filling materials are used to reduce slurry density. However, the sheath made of lightweight cement slurry has low mechanical performance at the initial bonding time. The required strength is achieved later. This is the main problem when evaluating the cement bond logging. The waiting time for geophysical measurements after injecting and bonding of cement is nowadays increasingly shortened. This is forced by economic factors. Too early geophysical measurements may result in obtaining a false indication of the cement bond logging. The lack of cement or partial bonding, despite the presence of slurry in the annular space is then found. The slurry developed by the author achieves high compressive strength after a short bonding time. Reducing the amount of water in the slurry resulted in a lowered filtration value. This is important in preventing gas migration after the cementing. The designed slurry also reaches the value of 3.5 MPa in a short time. This all... [more]

Analysis and Mitigation of Sub-Synchronous Resonance for Doubly Fed Induction Generator under VSG Control
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, impedance modeling, sub-synchronous resonance, virtual synchronous generator
This paper presents the analysis and mitigation of sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) for doubly fed induction generators (DFIG) under virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control, based on impedance methods. VSGs are considered to have grid-supporting ability and good stability in inductance-based weak grids, and are implemented in renewable power generations, including DFIG systems. However, stability analyses of VSGs for DFIG connecting with series capacitor compensation are absent. Therefore, this paper focuses on the analysis and mitigation of SSR for DFIG under VSG control. Impedance modeling of DFIG systems is used to analyze SSR stability. Based on impedance analysis, the influence of VSG control parameters and the configuration of damping factor of reactive power are discussed. Next, a parameter configuration method to mitigate SSR is proposed. Finally, time-domain simulation and fast fourier transform (FFT) results are given to validate the correctness and effectiveness of the im... [more]

Folded Spiral Resonator with Double-Layered Structure for Near-Field Wireless Power Transfer
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: folded spiral antenna, impedance matching, wireless power transfer
In this paper, a folded spiral resonator with a double-layered structure for near-field wireless power transfer is proposed. In near-field wireless power transfer, conjugate impedance matching is important to achieve high transfer efficiency. To achieve maximum available efficiency, it is common to connect a matching circuit to the antenna. However, the loss increases if a matching circuit is used. A coupling inductor with a resonant capacitor has the capability to adjust an imaginary part of the input impedance, whereas the folded spiral resonator has the capability to adjust both the imaginary and real parts of the input impedance. This resonator can achieve the maximum available efficiency without a matching circuit. This paper shows that the folded spiral resonator with a double-layered structure realizes high transfer efficiency compared to conventional models.

Methodology for Analysis of Electric Distribution Network Criticality Due to Direct Lightning Discharges
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: ATP, direct discharge crossing, direct lightning discharges, electric distribution network, surge arrester allocation, transient analysis
Direct lightning discharges in overhead distribution networks invariably cause serious insulation damage, frequently leading to the electric system’s partial or total shutdown. Installing lightning arresters can be very effective, and it is commonly used to minimize this problem; however, considering that typically, electric distribution grids exhibit a very large number of electrical nodes, the massive use of lightning arresters may not be economically viable. In this way, this article proposes a methodology for allocating lightning arresters that can significantly reduce the number of lightning arresters installed, but at the same time maintaining an adequate protection level for the distribution grid. The proposed methodology, named Direct Discharge Crossing (DDC), analyzes the network criticality based on two main factors, which are the overvoltage magnitudes and the number of flashovers provoked by lightning discharges, and defines a feeder lightning performance function that is u... Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: free gas zone, geohazard, geomechanics, seafloor subsidence
The geomechanics effects and seabed subsidence are critical issues that should be considered in the development of a hydrate reservoir. The purpose of this study is to couple the geomechanics, hydrate reaction, and multiphase fluid flow modules to investigate the feasibility of CO2 enhanced gas recovery (CO2-EGR) of a Class-1 hydrate deposit by observing the formation deformation, and the seabed subsidence. The production methods of depressurization and CO2-EGR are modeled, respectively. The production behaviors and seabed subsidence of different production methods are compared. The positive influence on the gas recovery for a Class-1 hydrate deposit via CO2-EGR is observed. The calculations of seabed subsidence showed a significant improvement can be achieved when CO2-EGR was used. The subsidence is only 6.8% of that from the pure depressurization in the case of a pressure drop of 30%. The effects of production pressure drop and production gas rate are investigated. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biocommodity, bioenergy, straw, threshing, weed seed, wheat
In cereal crops, chaff is a valuable lignocellulosic by-product that accounts for more than 50 Mt y−1 in Europe and is suitable for bioenergy purposes. Chaff is usually not collected due to the lack of combine harvesters that have the capability to handle it properly. The present two years experimental study investigated the hypothesis that the overall biomass collected in wheat crop can be increased by equipping the combine harvester with an aftermarket device. Chaff, discharged from the combine harvester-cleaning system, is collected by the turbine that delivers it either on the swath or on a lateral trailer towed by a tractor. The performance of all machines involved in the harvesting (combine harvester, tractor, baler, and trailer) were assessed. The chaff was collected in bales with the straw (A mode) and separately on a trailer (C mode).
