Application of Genetic Algorithm for More Efficient Multi-Layer Thickness Optimization in Solar Cells
Premkumar Vincent, Gwenaelle Cunha Sergio, Jaewon Jang, In Man Kang, Jaehoon Park, Hyeok Kim, Minho Lee, Jin-Hyuk Bae
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite difference time domain, Genetic Algorithm, optical modelling, solar cell optimization
Thin-film solar cells are predominately designed similar to a stacked structure. Optimizing the layer thicknesses in this stack structure is crucial to extract the best efficiency of the solar cell. The commonplace method used in optimization simulations, such as for optimizing the optical spacer layers’ thicknesses, is the parameter sweep. Our simulation study shows that the implementation of a meta-heuristic method like the genetic algorithm results in a significantly faster and accurate search method when compared to the brute-force parameter sweep method in both single and multi-layer optimization. While other sweep methods can also outperform the brute-force method, they do not consistently exhibit 100% accuracy in the optimized results like our genetic algorithm. We have used a well-studied P3HT-based structure to test our algorithm. Our best-case scenario was observed to use 60.84% fewer simulations than the brute-force method.
Development of Operational Strategies of Energy Storage System Using Classification of Customer Load Profiles under Time-of-Use Tariffs in South Korea

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arbitrage operation, customer load clustering, energy management in smart grid, energy storage system (ESS), peak shaving operation, time-of-use (TOU) tariff
This study proposes a methodology to develop adaptive operational strategies of customer-installed Energy Storage Systems (ESS) based on the classification of customer load profiles. In addition, this study proposes a methodology to characterize and classify customer load profiles based on newly proposed Time-of-Use (TOU) indices. The TOU indices effectively distribute daily customer load profiles on multi-dimensional domains, indicating customer energy consumption patterns under the TOU tariff. The K-means and Self-Organizing Map (SOM) sophisticated clustering methods were applied for classification. Furthermore, this study demonstrates peak shaving and arbitrage operations of ESS with current supporting polices in South Korea. Actual load profiles accumulated from customers under the TOU rate were used to validate the proposed methodologies. The simulation results show that the TOU index-based clustering effectively classifies load patterns into ‘M-shaped’ and ‘square wave-shaped’ lo... [more]

Leizhen Wang, Guorong Wang
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: critical velocity, natural gas hydrate, solid fluidization method, ultimate breaking distance, water jet
Water jet technology is a key technology in the marine natural gas hydrate (NGH) solid fluidization mining method. As an important parameter in water jet breaking NGH sediments technology, the critical breaking velocity of NGH sediments is unknown. In the present research, an orthogonal design experiment is carried out to study the critical velocity of NGH breakage by water jet, using frozen soil and sand as experimental samples. First, the time it takes to reach maximum NGH breaking depth is determined. Then, ultimate breaking distance is studied with respect to the NGH saturation, jet pressure, and nozzle diameter. Following that, the variation of critical velocity with NGH saturation is analyzed. Eventually, a formula to calculate the critical velocity for marine NGH breakage by water jet process is established, and the undetermined coefficient (η) in the formula is calibrated with the experiment data. The results show that the ultimate breaking distance is mostly achieved within 63... [more]
Towards Smart Energy Grids: A Box-Constrained Nonlinear Underdetermined Model for Power System Observability Using Recursive Quadratic Programming

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Algorithms, optimal PMU placement, smart cities, smart energy grids, smart power transmission system, synchronized measurements, underdetermined nonlinear systems
This paper introduces an underdetermined nonlinear programming model where the equality constraints are fewer than the design variables defined on a compact set for the solution of the optimal Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) placement. The minimization model is efficiently solved by a recursive quadratic programming (RQP) method. The focus of this work is on applying an RQP to attempt to find guaranteed global minima. The proposed minimization model is conducted on IEEE systems. For all simulation runs, the RQP converges superlinearly towards optimality in a finite number of iterations without to be rejected the full step-length. The simulation results indicate that the RQP finds out the minimal number and the optimal locations of PMUs to make the power system wholly observable.
Titanium-Anthraquinone Material as a New Design Approach for Electrodes in Aqueous Rechargeable Batteries
Franklin D. R. Maharaj, Michael P. Marshak
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anthraquinone, aqueous battery, manganese battery, metal-organic material, titanium anode
The need for expanded energy storage motivates material development for scalable aqueous secondary batteries. The combination of transition metals with redox-active organics represents a new approach to functional material design. Here, we detail the synthesis of titanium(IV) 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (Ti(1,8-DHAQ)2) as a novel redox-active material and demonstrate its use as a negative electrode in an aqueous battery. This one-pot synthesis results in amorphous micron-scale particles with titanium binding directly to the carbonyl feature as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. When assembled in a coin cell with a lithium manganese oxide positive electrode, the active material can be electrochemically cycled with a charge density of 40 mAh/g at 1.1 V. This represents a new method of creating simple and scalable electrodes using metal-organic materials for versatile energy storage applications.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: failure analysis, industrial maintenance management, knowledge management, major overhauls-outages-shutdowns-turnarounds, multicriteria decision analysis
Systematic failure analysis generally enhances the ability of engineering decision-makers to obtain a holistic view of the causal relationships that often exist within the systems they manage. Such analyses are made more difficult by uncertainties and organisational complexities associated with critical and inevitable industrial maintenance activities such as major overhauls, outages, shutdowns, and turnarounds (MoOSTs). This is perhaps due to the ratio of tasks-to-duration typically permitted. While core themes of MoOSTs including planning, contracts, costing, execution, etc., have been the focus of most research activities, it is worth noting that the ability to successfully transfer and retain MoOSTs knowledge is still under-investigated. Effectively implementing a case study-based approach for data collection, the current study explores the harmonisation of various risk assessments (i.e., fault tree analysis and reliability block diagrams) and multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA)... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alkaline electrolyser, anion-exchange membranes, CRM-free, NiFe oxide electrocatalyst, oxygen evolution reaction
NiFe electrodes are developed for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline electrolyser based on an anion exchange membrane (AEM) separator and fed with diluted KOH solution as supporting electrolyte. This study reports on the electrochemical behaviour of two different NiFe-oxide compositions (i.e., Ni1Fe1-oxide and Ni1Fe2-oxide) prepared by the oxalate method. These catalysts are assessed for single-cell operation in an MEA including a Sustainion™ anion-exchange membrane. The electrochemical polarization shows a current density of 650 mA cm−2 at 2 V and 50 °C for the Ni1Fe1 anode composition. A durability test of 500 h is carried out using potential cycling as an accelerated stress-test. This shows a decrease in current density of 150 mA cm−2 mainly during the first 400 h. The performance achieved for the anion-exchange membrane electrolyser single-cell based on the NiFeOx catalyst appears promising. However, further improvements are required to enhance the stability under t... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distributed generation, energy resource management, mixed binary mixed binary linear programming, Optimization, smart buildings
Efficient alternatives in energy production and consumption are constantly being investigated and conducted by increasingly strict policies. Buildings have a significant influence on electricity consumption, and their management may contribute to the sustainability of the electricity sector. Additionally, with growing incentives in the distributed generation (DG) and electric vehicle (EV) industries, it is believed that smart buildings (SBs) can play a key role in sustainability goals. In this work, an energy management system is developed to reduce the power demands of a residential building, considering the flexibility of the contracted power of each apartment. In order to balance the demand and supply, the electrical power provided by the external grid is supplemented by microgrids such as battery energy storage systems (BESS), EVs, and photovoltaic (PV) generation panels. Here, a mixed binary linear programming formulation (MBLP) is proposed to optimize the scheduling of the EVs ch... [more]

Prediction models in mobility and transportation maintenance systems have been dramatically improved by using machine learning methods. This paper proposes novel machine learning models for an intelligent road inspection. The traditional road inspection systems based on the pavement condition index (PCI) are often associated with the critical safety, energy and cost issues. Alternatively, the proposed models utilize surface deflection data from falling weight deflectometer (FWD) tests to predict the PCI. Machine learning methods are the single multi-layer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function (RBF) neural networks as well as their hybrids, i.e., Levenberg−Marquardt (MLP-LM), scaled conjugate gradient (MLP-SCG), imperialist competitive (RBF-ICA), and genetic algorithms (RBF-GA). Furthermore, the committee machine intelligent systems (CMIS) method was adopted to combine the results and improve the accuracy of the modeling. The results of the analysis have been verified through using... [more]
GPIO-Based Nonlinear Predictive Control for Flux-Weakening Current Control of the IPMSM Servo System

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: flux-weakening, generalized proportional integral observer, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, nonlinear predictive control
This paper proposes a generalized proportional integral observer (GPIO) based nonlinear predictive control (NPC) for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) to improve the flux-weakening (FW) current control performance against the complex nonlinear cross-coupling terms and the IPMSM parameters’ variations. First, the IPMSM is remodeled to further analyze the FW control difficulties caused by such cross-coupling terms and parameters variations. Considering the parameters’ variations as a kind of disturbance, a GPIO is then designed to compensate for such disturbance. A GPIO-based NPC is finally designed to handle the nonlinear cross-coupling terms to obtain an optimized current control performance. Experiments on a digital signal processor (DSP) based IPMSM servo system validate the workability of the proposed control scheme.

Davide Clerici, Francesco Mocera, Aurelio Somà
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery mechanical aging, diffusion induced stress, electrode particle model, hydrostatic stress influence on diffusion, li-ion battery
Electric cycling is one of the major damage sources in lithium-ion batteries and extensive work has been produced to understand and to slow down this phenomenon. The damage is related to the insertion and extraction of lithium ions in the active material. These processes cause mechanical stresses which in turn generate crack propagation, material loss and pulverization of the active material. In this work, the principles of diffusion induced stress theory are applied to predict concentration and stress field in the active material particles. Coupled and uncoupled models are derived, depending on whether the effect of hydrostatic stress on concentration is considered or neglected. The analytical solution of the coupled model is proposed in this work, in addition to the analytical solution of the uncoupled model already described in the literature. The analytical solution is a faster and simpler way to deal with the problem which otherwise should be solved in a numerical way with finite... [more]
Heat Transport Analysis in Rectangular Shields Using the Laplace and Poisson Equations

Keywords: heat transfer in walls, Laplace equation solution, Poisson equation solution, transient wall characteristic
In the design of a building envelope, there is the issue of heat flow through the partitions. In the heat flow process, we distinguish steady and dynamic states in which heat fluxes need to be obtained as part of building physics calculations. This article describes the issue of determining the size of those heat fluxes. The search for the temperature field in a two-dimensional problem is common in building physics and heat exchange in general. Both numerical and analytical methods can be used to obtain a solution. Two methods were dealt with, the first of which was used to obtain the solution in the steady state and the other in the transient. In the steady state a method of initial functions, the basics of which were given by W.Z. Vlasov and A.Y. Lur’e was adopted. Originally MIF was used for analysis of the loads of a flat elastic medium. Since then it was used for solving concrete beams, plates and composite materials problems. March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biofuels, competition, GHG emissions, GHG quota, Modelling, RED II
With the Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001 (RED II), adopted in December 2018, the EU is continuing the political framework for the use of renewable energy sources in the transport sector for the period from 2021 to 2030. At the same time, the German federal government has set a target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transport sector by at least 40% to 42% by 2030 compared to the 1990 GHG level. To investigate the possible effects of the European and national requirements on the German GHG quota, cost-optimal fuel mixes were modelled to achieve the GHG targets of 26 fuel options in each of the nine different scenarios. The results show clear differences between the scenarios that implement the RED II targets (including 14% renewables in transport by 2030) and those that implement the climate protection target (40−42% GHG reduction compared to 1990 by 2030). If only the minimum requirements of RED II are met, the German climate protection target is clearly missed wi... [more]

Keywords: biomass quality, olive groves, pruning harvesting, slope, work productivity
Pruning residues from olive groves represent an important biomass source. Until now, the management of pruning residue has generally represented a disposal problem rather than an opportunity for additional revenue. The main problem is the lack of a well-organized pruning biomass supply chain. In particular, harvesting is a key stage that influences the product quality, the type of logistics chain, and the economic sustainability of the pruning supply chain. The aim of the present paper was the evaluation of the machine performance of the Facma Comby TR200 towed shredder. The harvesting tests took place in Agios Konstantinos, Fthiotida, Central Greece. Two different experimental fields were used for the evaluation of this harvesting system; these fields were characterized by different slopes to check the convenience of using such a towed shredder on both hilly slopes and flat terrains. Analysis was conducted focusing on both the work productivity and costs. Moreover, an evaluation of th... [more]

Keywords: DAB Converter, high-frequency link, Leakage inductor, MPPT, photovoltaic system
In this paper, a design method for a photovoltaic system based on a dual active bridge converter and a photovoltaic module is proposed. The method is supported by analytical results and theoretical predictions, which are confirmed with circuital simulations. The analytical development, the theoretical predictions, and the validation through circuital simulations, are the main contributions of the paper. The dual active bridge converter is selected due to its high efficiency, high input and output voltages range, and high voltage-conversion ratio, which enables the interface of low-voltage photovoltaic modules with a high-voltage dc bus, such as the input of a micro-inverter. To propose the design method, the circuital analysis of the dual active bridge converter is performed to describe the general waveforms derived from the circuit behavior. Then, the analysis of the dual active bridge converter, interacting with a photovoltaic module driven by a maximum power point tracking algorithm... [more]

Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, epoxy resin, glow corona, Highly non-uniform Electric field, needle position, NovecTM 4710/CO2, surface discharge, surface roughness, volume discharge
AC pre-discharge currents, breakdown, and flashover voltage measurements are reported in a 10 mm needle-plane arrangement in a 4% NovecTM 4710/96% CO2 gas mixture and compared with CO2 for pressures up to 8.8 bar abs. Flashover measurements were performed on different solid dielectrics (Al2O3_filled epoxy resins, PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) and PE (polyethylene)) for different roughness surface finishes. The effect of fixed conducting needles at various positions on electrical strength is reported. A strong nonlinear behaviour as function of gas pressure was observed for all the studied parameters (gas, needle position, solid insulator, insulator roughness). The non-linear behaviour is attributed to the inception and quenching of glow corona, in the interval between inception and breakdown or flashover voltages. It is found that a 4% concentration of NovecTM 4710 in CO2 has a breakdown/flashover voltage ≈ 1.14 higher than CO2. The glow corona-induced stabilization effect is seen for... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: co-combustion, grate boiler, heavy metals, phosphorus recovery, sewage sludge
Phosphorus has been identified as a critical element by the European Union and recycling efforts are increasingly common. An important phosphorus-containing waste stream for recycling is municipal sewage sludge (MSS), which is used directly as fertilizer to farmland. However, it contains pollutants such as heavy metals, pharmaceutical residues, polychlorinated bi-phenyls (PCBs) and nano-plastics. The interest in combustion of MSS is continuously growing, as it both reduces the volume as well as destroys the organic materials and could separate certain heavy metals from the produced ashes. This results in ashes with a potential for either direct use as fertilizer or as a suitable feedstock for upgrading processes. The aim of this study was to investigate co-combustion of MSS and biomass to create a phosphorus-rich bottom ash with a low heavy metal content. A laboratory-scale fixed-bed reactor in addition to an 8 MWth grate-boiler was used for the experimental work. The concentration of... [more]

Keywords: deep energy renovation, hygrothermal performance of buildings, moisture safety, nZEB renovation, prefabricated timber frame insulation elements, quality assessment
A need for the refurbishment and renewal of the existing building stock has been in focus for many decades, principally because of excessive global energy consumption and pollution. This paper presents a methodology and the results of analysis of choices of realizable sets of timber frame prefabricated insulation elements for major renovation of apartment buildings. Numerous combinations of elements with different characteristics were analyzed by applying measurements, interviews, and building performance simulation software, and thereupon their performance, installation eligibility, and concurrent cost levels were compared. Mineral wool board with a special wind barrier facing was found to be the best material as a wind barrier from the perspective of hygrothermal performance. An air and vapor barrier should have sufficient vapor permeability to allow dry-out of constructional moisture. It is possible to renovate apartment buildings to meet the nZEB energy performance requirements and... [more]

Keywords: energy savings, lighting, optimal control, performance evaluation, sustainable tunneling, threshold zone luminance, tunnel lighting, tunnel management
Because of the absence of lighting calculation tools at the initial stage of tunnel design, the lighting systems are usually over-dimensioned, leading to over illumination and increased energy consumption. For this reason, a fine-tuning method for switching lighting stages according to the traffic weighted L20 luminance is proposed at no additional cost. The method was applied in a real −case scenario, where L20 luminance of the access zone at eleven (11) existing tunnels was calculated. The traffic weighted method of CR14380 was used in order to calculate the actual luminance levels for the entrance zone. The new transition zone, which decreases luminance curves, was produced and compared with the existing ones. Thus, a new switching control was proposed and programed for the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of the tunnel. The signals of the corresponding eleven L20 meters for a period of eight days were used and the corresponding annual energy consumptions were... [more]

Keywords: heat pumps, integrated energy systems, vehicle-to-grid
The city of Stockholm is close to hitting the capacity limits of its power grid. As an additional challenge, electricity has been identified as a key resource to help the city to meet its environmental targets. This has pushed citizens to prefer power-based technologies, like heat pumps and electric vehicles, thus endangering the stability of the grid. The focus of this paper is on the district of Hammarby Sjöstad. Here, plans are set to switch from district heating to heat pumps. A previous study verified that this choice will cause overloadings on the electricity distribution grid. The present paper tackles this problem by proposing a new energy storage option. By considering the increasing share of electric vehicles, the potential of using the electricity stored in their batteries to support the grid is explored through technical performance simulations. The objective was to enable a bi-directional flow and use the electric vehicles’ (EVs)’ discharging to shave the peak demand cause... [more]

Keywords: demand response, electric vehicle, Energy Storage, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The energy management system is executed in microgrids for optimal integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into the power distribution grids. To this end, various strategies have been more focused on cost reduction, whereas effectively both economic and technical indices/factors have to be considered simultaneously. Therefore, in this paper, a two-layer optimization model is proposed to minimize the operation costs, voltage fluctuations, and power losses of smart microgrids. In the outer-layer, the size and capacity of DERs including renewable energy sources (RES), electric vehicles (EV) charging stations and energy storage systems (ESS), are obtained simultaneously. The inner-layer corresponds to the scheduled operation of EVs and ESSs using an integrated coordination model (ICM). The ICM is a fuzzy interface that has been adopted to address the multi-objectivity of the cost function developed based on hourly demand response, state of charges of EVs and ESS, and electricity... Keywords: DC distribution system, dual-active-bridge DC-DC converter, three-phase buck rectifier, UPS
In the DC distribution system, to step down the DC voltage level from the AC grid voltage, the conventional topologies require multiple power conversion stages and bulky line-frequency transformers, which degrade their power density and cost-effectiveness. In addition, the conventional topologies suffer from a shoot-through problem resulting in their low system reliability. In this paper, to overcome the above issues, systematic design approaches of a three-phase buck rectifier with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and a protection algorithm are proposed to obtain the high reliability of the DC distribution system, which can deal with fault conditions and can regulate the output voltage level. It only requires a single stage of the three-phase buck rectifier. Also, a thyristor switch is added without any commutation circuits to cut off the output from the fault circuit. The shoot-through faults do not occur in the buck rectifier, leading to high reliability. A dual-active-bridge (... [more]

A convex mathematical model based on second-order cone programming (SOCP) for the optimal operation in direct current microgrids (DCMGs) with high-level penetration of renewable energies and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) is developed in this paper. The SOCP formulation allows converting the non-convex model of economic dispatch into a convex approach that guarantees the global optimum and has an easy implementation in specialized software, i.e., CVX. This conversion is accomplished by performing a mathematical relaxation to ensure the global optimum in DCMG. The SOCP model includes changeable energy purchase prices in the DCMG operation, which makes it in a suitable formulation to be implemented in real-time operation. An energy short-term forecasting model based on a receding horizon control (RHC) plus an artificial neural network (ANN) is used to forecast primary sources of renewable energy for periods of 0.5h. Keywords: animal fat, co-gasification, crude glycerol, fixed-bed, Steam Reforming
The aim of this work was to assess the technical viability of glycerol/fat co-gasification. The gasification performance was studied in a downflow fixed bed reactor using activated alumina particles as bed material and steam as oxidizing agent. The effect of gasification temperature, from 800 to 950 °C was studied with a feed mixture with 10% (w/w) of animal fat. The influence of fat incorporation on the feedstock in the overall gasification process was also performed, using 3% (w/w) and 5% (w/w) of fat in feed mixtures. Samples of dry gas from the gasifier were collected and analyzed by gas chromatography in order to determine the CO, CO2, CH4, and H2 content. The best results were obtained using the highest tested temperature, 950 °C, and using 3% (w/w) of animal fat in the feed mixture. The overall results revealed that the co-gasification of glycerol/animal fat mixtures seems to be a feasible technical option.
