Electric Vehicle−Grid Integration with Voltage Regulation in Radial Distribution Networks
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: alternating direction method of multipliers, distribution network voltage regulation, vehicle–grid integration
In this paper, a vehicle−grid integration (VGI) control strategy for radial power distribution networks is presented. The control schemes are designed at both microgrid level and distribution level. At the VGI microgrid level, the available power capacity for electric vehicle (EV) charging is optimally allocated for charging electric vehicles to meet charging requirements. At the distribution grid level, a distributed voltage compensation algorithm is designed to recover voltage violation when it happens at a distribution node. The voltage compensation is achieved through a negotiation between the grid-level agent and VGI microgrid agents using the alternating direction method of multipliers. In each negotiation round, individual agents pursue their own objectives. The computation can be carried out in parallel for each agent. The presented VGI control schemes are simulated and verified in a modified IEEE 37 bus distribution system. The simulation results are presented to show the effe... [more]

At What Cost Can Renewable Hydrogen Offset Fossil Fuel Use in Ireland’s Gas Network?
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Storage, energy system, geographic information system, Hydrogen, natural gas network, water electrolysis, wind energy
The results of a techno-economic model of distributed wind-hydrogen systems (WHS) located at each existing wind farm on the island of Ireland are presented in this paper. Hydrogen is produced by water electrolysis from wind energy and backed up by grid electricity, compressed before temporarily stored, then transported to the nearest injection location on the natural gas network. The model employs a novel correlation-based approach to select an optimum electrolyser capacity that generates a minimum levelised cost of hydrogen production (LCOH) for each WHS. Three scenarios of electrolyser operation are studied: (1) curtailed wind, (2) available wind, and (3) full capacity operations. Additionally, two sets of input parameters are used: (1) current and (2) future techno-economic parameters. Additionally, two electricity prices are considered: (1) low and (2) high prices. A closest facility algorithm in a geographic information system (GIS) package identifies the shortest routes from each... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bioenergy, biofuel, Indonesia, integrated assessment, interdisciplinary, Malaysia, Supply Chain, Thailand
Bioenergy is one of the alternatives to secure energy demand, despite increasing debate on the sustainability of using bioenergy as a renewable source. As the source is disseminated over a large area and affected by seasonality, the potential benefit is highly dependent on other cost and benefit trade-offs along the supply chain. This review paper aims to assess operational management research methods used in biofuel supply chain planning, including both upstream production and international downstream trading. There have been considerable operational management studies done on upstream processes in biofuel production based on different strategic and tactical decision making of a single or multiple feedstocks, considering economic and environmental factor. However, the environmental consideration is often limited to carbon emission where the other environmental impact such as land-use change, biodiversity loss, irrigation and fertilisation are often being overlooked. Enhancement of Security and Handling the Inconspicuousness in IoT Using a Simple Size Extensible Blockchain
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: blockchain, inconspicuousness, Internet of Things, security, shared throughput administration algorithm (STA), shared-time depending agreement algorithm (STD), simple size extensible
Blockchain technology is increasingly used worldwide to enhance the performance and profit of any environment through its defining characteristics, such as security, auditability, immutability, and inconspicuousness. Owing to these characteristics, the blockchain can be used in various non-financial operations of some domains, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and distributed computing. However, implementing blockchain technology in IoT is not always a feasible solution because blockchain deployment is costly, it has limited extensibility and provides irregular bandwidth and latency. In this regard, a simple size extensible (SSE) blockchain has been proposed to provide an optimal solution for IoT environments by satisfying the needs of the IoT environment as well as ensuring end-to-end security. The implementation of the proposed blockchain develops an overlay network to obtain a distributed environment where the blockchain is handled by the resources present therein. Two novel algo... A New Efficient Step-Up Boost Converter with CLD Cell for Electric Vehicle and New Energy Systems
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charge pump capacitor, DC-DC converter, Dynamic Modelling, electric vehicle (EV)
An increase in demand for renewable energy resources, energy storage technologies, and electric vehicles requires high-power level DC-DC converters. The DC-DC converter that is suitable for high-power conversion applications (i.e., resonant, full-bridge or the dual-active bridge) requires magnetic transformer coupling between input and output stage. However, transformer design in these converters remains a challenging problem, with several non-linear scaling issues that need to be simultaneously optimized to reduce losses and maintain acceptable performance. In this paper, a new transformer-less high step-up boost converter with a charge pump capacitorand capacitor-inductor-diode CLD cell is proposed using dynamic modeling. The experimental and simulation results of the proposed converter are carried out in a laboratory and through Matlab Simulink, where 10 V is given as an input voltage, and at the output, 100 V achieved in the proposed converter. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diagnostic and monitoring, fiber optic sensor, power transformer
Diagnostic and condition monitoring of power transformers are key actions to guarantee their safe operation. The subsequent benefits include reduced service interruptions and economic losses associated with their unavailability. Conventional test methods developed for the condition assessment of power transformers have certain limitations. To overcome such problems, fiber optic-based sensors for monitoring the condition of transformers have been developed. Flawlessly built-up fiber optic-based sensors provide online and offline assessment of various parameters like temperature, moisture, partial discharges, gas analyses, vibration, winding deformation, and oil levels, which are based on different sensing principles. In this paper a variety and assessment of different fiber optic-based diagnostic techniques for monitoring power transformers are discussed. It includes significant tutorial elements as well as some analyses.

Stakeholders’ Views on Multimodal Urban Mobility Futures: A Matter of Policy Interventions or Just the Logical Result of Digitalization?
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: multimodality, policy mixes, sociotechnical transitions, stakeholder interviews, urban mobility
It is widely acknowledged that strategies to decarbonize energy systems cannot omit the mobility sector. For several decades, particularly in urban areas, a shift from car-based mobility to more environmental-friendly modes has been high on political agendas. Progress has been made in many urban areas, but so far only in small, rather incremental steps. The dominance of the car has remained largely stable in urban transport. For some time now, many experts have argued that processes of digitalization will co-evolve with societal trends and lead to multimodal urban mobility regimes in which private car usage will lose its dominance. In this paper, we examine if stakeholders active in the field believe that, despite digitalization, policy interventions are essential to achieve such a transition. The analysis draws on concepts from transition research and is based on 10 semi-structured interviews with providers of innovative mobility services that may contribute to more multimodal urban m... The Influence of Internal Heat Exchanger on the Performance of Transcritical CO2 Water Source Heat Pump Water Heater
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat pump water heater, internal heat exchanger, transcritical CO2
The characteristics of the transcritical CO2 heat pump water heater (HPWH) system are; a lower inlet hot water temperature (Ti-hw) (sometimes this is lower than the water source temperature), and an outlet gas cooler temperature (To-gc) which is affected by the Ti-hw and often lower than the critical temperature. In order to study the effects of the internal heat exchanger (IHX) on the operational performance of the transcritical CO2 HPWH when To-gc is low, a transcritical CO2 water source HPWH experiment platform is established to conduct experimental research and comparative analysis on the operational performance of the transcritical CO2 water source HPWH, with or without IHX. It is found that, if only the coefficient of performance (COP) and heating at the optimal exhaust pressure of the transcritical CO2 water source HPWH were considered, COP and the heating of the non-IHX system would be slightly higher than those of the IHX system at the lower hot water flow and water source tem... Reconstruction of Multidecadal Country-Aggregated Hydro Power Generation in Europe Based on a Random Forest Model
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: climate variable, hydro power generation, lagged effect, random forest
Hydro power can provide a source of dispatchable low-carbon electricity and a storage solution in a climate-dependent energy mix with high shares of wind and solar production. Therefore, understanding the effect climate has on hydro power generation is critical to ensure a stable energy supply, particularly at a continental scale. Here, we introduce a framework using climate data to model hydro power generation at the country level based on a machine learning method, the random forest model, to produce a publicly accessible hydro power dataset from 1979 to present for twelve European countries. In addition to producing a consistent European hydro power generation dataset covering the past 40 years, the specific novelty of this approach is to focus on the lagged effect of climate variability on hydro power. Specifically, multiple lagged values of temperature and precipitation are used. Overall, the model shows promising results, with the correlation values ranging between 0.85 and 0.98... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dual-polarization model, fractional-order model, hybrid Kalman filter, lithium-ion battery, SOC estimation
Accurate estimation of the state of charge (SOC) is an important criterion to prevent the batteries from being over-charged or over-discharged, and this assures an electric vehicle’s safety and reliability. To investigate the effect of different operating conditions on the SOC estimation results, a dual-polarization model (DPM) and a fractional-order model (FOM) are established in this study, taking into account the prediction accuracy and structural complexity of a battery model. Based on these two battery equivalent circuit models (ECMs), a hybrid Kalman filter (HKF) algorithm is adopted to estimate the SOC of the battery; the algorithm comprehensively utilizes the ampere-hour (Ah) integration method, the Kalman filter (KF) algorithm, and the extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coal mill, data-driven, dynamic model, fault diagnosis, fault simulation
Monitoring and diagnosis of coal mill systems are critical to the security operation of power plants. The traditional data-driven fault diagnosis methods often result in low fault recognition rate or even misjudgment due to the imbalance between fault data samples and normal data samples. In order to obtain massive fault sample data effectively, based on the analysis of primary air system, grinding mechanism and energy conversion process, a dynamic model of the coal mill system which can be used for fault simulation is established. Then, according to the mechanism of various faults, three types of faults (i.e., coal interruption, coal blockage and coal self-ignition) are simulated through the modification of model parameters. The simulation shows that the dynamic characteristic of the model is consistent with the actual object, the relative error of each output variable is less than 2.53%, and the total average relative error of all outputs is about 1.2%. An Energy Graph-Based Approach to Fault Diagnosis of a Transcritical CO2 Heat Pump
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy-based representation, Fault Detection, fault diagnosis, transcritical heat pump
The objective of this paper is to describe an energy-based approach to visualize, identify, and monitor faults that may occur in a water-to-water transcritical CO 2 heat pump system. A representation using energy attributes allows the abstraction of all physical phenomena present during operation into a compact and easily interpretable form. The use of a linear graph representation, with heat pump components represented as nodes and energy interactions as links, is investigated. Node signature matrices are used to present the energy information in a compact mathematical form. The resulting node signature matrix is referred to as an attributed graph and is populated in such a way as to retain the structural information, i.e., where the attribute points to in the physical system. To generate the energy and exergy information for the compilation of the attributed graphs, a descriptive thermal−fluid model of the heat pump system is developed. A Study on an Improved Three-Winding Coupled Inductor Based DC/DC Boost Converter with Continuous Input Current
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: continuous conduction mode (CCM), coupled inductors, DC/DC boost converter
This paper proposes a novel high voltage conversion gain DC/DC boost converter for renewable energy applications and systems. The proposed converter utilizes a three-winding coupled inductor. The presented converter benefits from a unique advantage, as the actual turn ratio of the coupled inductor is decreased in the charging state of the coupled inductor. However, while the inductor is discharging, the actual turn ratio is increased. This feature leads to a very high voltage conversion gain. Furthermore, a passive clamp circuit is employed to recover the leakage current of the coupled inductor. The voltage stresses on the semiconductors are also reduced. In addition, the average current of the primary side of the coupled inductor is zero. This will reduce the total energy stored in the passive elements of the converter. The paper analyzes the Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) and the operation principles of the presented converter are thoroughly derived. A 250 W laboratory hardware pro... [more]
