An Economical Method for Simultaneously Improving Pretreatment and Anaerobic Fermentation Effects on Corn Straw Using Ultra-Low Concentration FeCl2
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: anaerobic fermentation, biogas, catalyst, corn straw, FeCl2, nutritional components, pretreatment, ultra-low concentration, whole process optimization
Low pollution, slight corrosion, and low cost are the main challenges in the conversion of biomass to biogas. In this work, based on the whole process optimization of biomass conversion, an effective method using an ultra-low concentration of FeCl2 was proposed to simultaneously promote the biochemical reaction and improve the pretreatment effect. The concentration of FeCl2 in the pretreatment was determined according to the requirements of the minimum amount which led to the optimal performance of the anaerobic system and had economical importance. The effects of FeCl2 in the pretreatment and anaerobic fermentation were evaluated by comparing with that of distilled water in the production of hydrolysis products and organic acids. The optimal condition was obtained at 180 °C and 10 min with 1 × 10−5 mol/L FeCl2 pretreatment. At that condition, hemicellulose achieved a high conversion of 97.6%, and the released xylose reached nearly 95%. At least 77.5% of the organic matter in the solut... [more]

Assessment of the Resistance Value of Trash Racks at a Small Hydropower Plant Operating at Low Temperature
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: head losses, hydropower, iced trash racks, SHP
Trash racks are the first element mounted in inlet channels of hydraulic structures. Their primary task is to capture coarse pollutants flowing in the riverbed/river channel and protect water facilities downstream. With the use of these devices, it is possible to separate coarse suspended matter, branches carried with the current, floating plastic elements, etc., which undoubtedly contributes to a trouble-free flow through culverts or channels and prevents hydroelectric power plant turbines from failure. An important issue here is also to ensure the proper operation of trash racks, particularly in respect of hydraulic structures whose task is to convert water energy into electricity (hydropower plants). Proper operation of trash racks minimizes losses arising from obstructing the free flow of water through accumulated waste or, in the wintertime, through icing. Incorrect work in this area entails specific head losses, and consequently leads to economic harm. In the paper, the resistanc... [more]

The Effect of Deep Energy Retrofit on The Hourly Power Demand of Finnish Detached Houses
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep retrofit, detached house, electric heating, energy renovation, ground-source heat pump, power demand, single-family house
This study examines how the energy renovation of old detached houses affects the hourly power consumption of heating and electricity in Finland. As electrification of heating through heat pumps becomes more common, the effects on the grid need to be quantified. Increased fluctuation and peak power demand could increase the need for fossil-based peaking power plants or call for new investments to the distribution infrastructure. The novelty in this study is the focus on hourly power demand instead of just annual energy consumption. Identifying the influence of building energy retrofits on the instantaneous power demand can help guide policy and investments into building retrofits and related technology. The work was done through dynamic building simulation and utilized building configurations obtained through multi-objective optimization. Deep energy retrofits decreased both the total and peak heating power consumption. However, the use of air-source heat pumps increased the peak power... [more]

Multi-Step Short-Term Wind Speed Prediction Using a Residual Dilated Causal Convolutional Network with Nonlinear Attention
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: convolutional neural network, deep learning architectures, Machine Learning, residual networks, time series, wind energy, wind speed forecasting
Wind energy is the most used renewable energy worldwide second only to hydropower. However, the stochastic nature of wind speed makes it harder for wind farms to manage the future power production and maintenance schedules efficiently. Many wind speed prediction models exist that focus on advance neural networks and/or preprocessing techniques to improve the accuracy. Since most of these models require a large amount of historic wind data and are validated using the data split method, the application to real-world scenarios cannot be determined. In this paper, we present a multi-step univariate prediction model for wind speed data inspired by the residual U-net architecture of the convolutional neural network (CNN). We propose a residual dilated causal convolutional neural network (Res-DCCNN) with nonlinear attention for multi-step-ahead wind speed forecasting. Our model can outperform long-term short-term memory networks (LSTM), gated recurrent units (GRU), and Res-DCCNN using sliding... [more]

Natural Gas Reservoir Characteristics and Non-Darcy Flow in Low-Permeability Sandstone Reservoir of Sulige Gas Field, Ordos Basin
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas reservoir distribution, irreducible water saturation, low-permeability sandstone reservoir, non-Darcy flow, Sulige gas field
In order to reveal the gas−water distribution and formation mechanism of the low-permeability sandstone gas reservoir, the gas reservoir distribution and the formation mechanism in a low-permeability sandstone gas reservoir are investigated using data obtained from a physical simulation experiment of gas percolation. The exploration and experimenting for petroleum in the upper Paleozoic gas pool of the Sulige gas field in the Ordos basin in this paper. Results showed that the gas reservoir is characterized by low gas saturation, a complex distribution relationship of gas−water, and weak gas−water gravity differentiation. The characteristics of gas distribution are closely related to permeability, gas flow, and migration force. The capillary pressure difference is the main driving force of gas accumulation. There exists a threshold pressure gradient as gas flows in low-permeability sandstone. The lower that permeability, the greater the threshold pressure gradient. When the driving forc... [more]

An Approach to Calculating Casing Bearing Capacity with Parabolic Deformation Characteristics Under Local Radial Loading
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: bearing capacity, casing collapse, Fresnel integral, local radial load
In the process of waterflooding technology in the Jilin oilfield, local radial compressive stress caused by rock deformation results in local casing collapse. According to statistics regarding casing-deformation characteristics, a certain number of these characteristics are approximately parabola-shaped at the radial-deformation bottom, and the boundary of the whole deformation area is approximately symmetrical and double-parabola-shaped. The main work of this article focused on occurrences of such casing deformation. Assuming that, in the process of casing deformation, external work is totally converted into energy consumption due to the deformation, the variation regularity of bearing capacity under local radial load was obtained. In the Qing-1 stratum of the Jilin oilfield, by selecting casing with radial collapse deformation parameters of 41/2″J55, 51/2″J55, 41/2″N80, and 51/2″N80, radial bearing capacity was calculated. Resource Recovery from Waste Coffee Grounds Using Ultrasonic-Assisted Technology for Bioenergy Production
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, optimisation, ultrasonic-assisted technology, waste coffee grounds
Biodiesel is a proven alternative fuel that can serve as a substitute for petroleum diesel due to its renewability, non-toxicity, sulphur-free nature and superior lubricity. Waste-based non-edible oils are studied as potential biodiesel feedstocks owing to the focus on the valorisation of waste products. Instead of being treated as municipal waste, waste coffee grounds (WCG) can be utilised for oil extraction, thereby recovering an energy source in the form of biodiesel. This study evaluates oil extraction from WCG using ultrasonic and Soxhlet techniques, followed by biodiesel conversion using an ultrasonic-assisted transesterification process. It was found that n-hexane was the most effective solvent for the oil extraction process and ultrasonic-assisted technology offers a 13.5% higher yield compared to the conventional Soxhlet extraction process. Solid-to-solvent ratio and extraction time of the oil extraction process from the dried waste coffee grounds (DWCG) after the brewing proc... [more]

Goal Programming Application for Contract Pricing of Electric Vehicle Aggregator in Join Day-Ahead Market
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: contract price, electric vehicle (EV) owners, electric vehicle aggregator (EVA), Goal programming (GP), stochastic programming, uncertainty
Selecting an appropriate contract price between electric vehicle aggregators and electric vehicle owners is an uncertain, multi-criteria decision-making issue. In addition, the results can cause strong conflict due to different aims: the optimal value for increasing electric vehicle aggregator (EVA) profit negatively affects the cost for owners. The value of the contract price can change the optimal scheduling of EVAs in the day-ahead market. Taking into consideration this context, the current paper proposes to solve the multi-objective scheduling problem of an aggregator with a goal programming approach. The presented approach sets a satisfaction level for each goal according to decision-makers’ preference. Numerical results illustrate the validity of this approach to balance different performance measures. Furthermore, optimal scheduling of electric vehicle aggregators in the day-ahead market is created.

Research on Modeling of a Micro Variable-Pitch Turboprop Engine Based on Rig Test Data
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic coefficient method, model based on data, turboprop engine
Exact component characteristics are required for establishing an accurate component level aeroengine model. When component characteristics is lacking, the dynamic coefficient method based on test data, is suitable for establishing a single-input and single-output aeroengine model. When it is applied to build multiple-input, multiple-output aeroengine models, some parameters are assumed to be unchanged, which causes large error. An improved modeling method based on rig data is proposed to establish a double-input, double-output model for a micro variable-pitch turboprop engine. The input variables are fuel flow and pitch angle, and the output variables are rotational speeds of the core engine and the propeller. First, in order to gather modeling data, a test bench is designed and rig tests are carried out. Then, two conclusions are obtained by analyzing the rig data, based on which, the power turbine output is taken as the function of the core speed and the propeller speed. The establis... [more]

Flow Shop Providing Frequency Regulation Service in Electricity Market
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: automatic generation control (AGC) strategy, day-ahead energy market, flow shop scheduling, frequency regulation market, optimal bidding
Electricity cost is one of main production costs for flow shops. Providing frequency regulation services can help electric loads reduce their electricity costs. Previous studies mostly focus on automatic generation control (AGC) strategies for other types of electric loads, such as air conditioners, EVs or battery storage. In this paper, we find flow shops competent to follow regulation signals and avoid interrupts of processing with the help of scheduling optimization. This finding may be an aid for flow shops by availing regulation services to the market and making a profit. Hence, we propose an AGC strategy for optimizing flow shop scheduling, without affecting the operation. To formulate the bidding strategy for flow shops in regulation market, we considered as many relevant factors as possible, including the regulation performance and yield of flow shops, constraints on load power, regulation reserve capacity and machines operation, inventory of each semi-finished product, AGC str... Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: bioresource, cereals, commodity, harvest index, staple foods, triticum, wheat
The collection of residues from staple crop may contribute to meet EU regulations in renewable energy production without harming soil quality. At a global scale, chaff may have great potential to be used as a bioenergy source. However, chaff is not usually collected, and its loss can consist of up to one-fifth of the residual biomass harvestable. In the present work, a spreader able to manage the chaff (either spreading [SPR] on the soil aside to the straw swath or admixed [ADM] with the straw) at varying threshing conditions (with either 1 or 2 threshing rotors [1R and 2R, respectively] in the combine, which affects the mean length of the straw pieces). The fractions of the biomass available in field (grain, chaff, straw, and stubble) were measured, along with the performances of both grain harvesting and baling operations. Admixing chaff allowed for a slightly higher amount of straw fresh weight baled compared to SPR (+336 kg straw ha−1), but such result was not evident on a dry weig... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: centralized electrical storage, deep learning, long short-term memory, microgrid, mixed-integer nonlinear programming, Monte Carlo simulation, optimal power flow
In this paper, an innovative method for managing a smart-community microgrid (SCM) with a centralized electrical storage system (CESS) is proposed. The method consists of day-ahead optimal power flow (DA−OPF) for day-ahead SCM managing and its subsequent evaluation, considering forecast uncertainties. The DA−OPF is based on a data forecast system that uses a deep learning (DL) long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The OPF problem is formulated as a mathematical mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. Following this, the developed DA−OPF strategy was evaluated under possible operations, using a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). The MCS allowed us to obtain potential deviations of forecasted data during possible day-ahead operations and to evaluate the impact of the data forecast errors on the SCM, and that of unit limitation and the emergence of critical situations. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: cameras, congestion, fuzzy logic, prediction, regression, traffic data
The possibilities of collecting the necessary information using multi-touch cameras and ways to improve road traffic data collection are considered. An increase in the number of vehicles leads to traffic jams, which in turn leads to an increase in travel time, additional fuel consumption and other negative consequences. To solve this problem, it is necessary to have a reliable information collection system and apply modern effective methods of processing the collected information. The technology considered in the article allows taking into account pedestrians crossing the intersection. The purpose of this article is to determine the most important traffic characteristics that affect the traffic capacity of the intersection, in other words, the actual number of passing cars. Throughput is taken as a dependent variable. March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: conditional generation network, data set imbalance, LightGBM, power theft detection, stacked convolution noise reduction encoder
In recent years, various types of power theft incidents have occurred frequently, and the training of the power-stealing detection model is susceptible to the influence of the imbalanced data set and the data noise, which leads to errors in power-stealing detection. Therefore, a power-stealing detection model is proposed, which is based on Improved Conditional Generation Adversarial Network (CWGAN), Stacked Convolution Noise Reduction Autoencoder (SCDAE) and Lightweight Gradient Boosting Decision Machine (LightGBM). The model performs Generation- Adversarial operations on the original unbalanced power consumption data to achieve the balance of electricity data, and avoids the interference of the imbalanced data set on classifier training. In addition, the convolution method is used to stack the noise reduction auto-encoder to achieve dimension reduction of power consumption data, extract data features and reduce the impact of random noise. The Potential Contribution of Imported Biomass to Renewable Energy Targets in the EU−the Trade-off between Ambitious Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Targets and Cost Thresholds
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biomass trade, feedstock availability, GHG threshold, import potential, logistics, spatially explicit, supply chain analysis, supply chain costs
Wood pellets could potentially contribute to bioenergy demand in the European Union (EU). Market cost constraints as well as greenhouse gas (GHG) emission savings thresholds imposed by the European Commission however limit the potential use of pellets. A spatially explicit assessment of import potentials of both pellets and torrefied pellets, based on the growing stock of forestry biomass in the US, Canada, Brazil, Russia and Baltic States, was combined with an analysis of supply chain costs and emissions in order to analyse potentials as limited by different levels of costs and emission constraints. Results show that in case of GHG savings thresholds of 70%, 80% and 85% the total import potential is reduced to 61 to 24 and 1 Mt, respectively. The potential for torrefied pellets is larger in all cases, 44 Mt in the case of an 80% limit. Multiresolution GPC-Structured Control of a Single-Loop Cold-Flow Chemical Looping Testbed
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: chemical looping, generalized predictive control (GPC), NARMA model, wavelets
Chemical looping is a near-zero emission process for generating power from coal. It is based on a multi-phase gas-solid flow and has extremely challenging nonlinear, multi-scale dynamics with jumps, producing large dynamic model uncertainty, which renders traditional robust control techniques, such as linear parameter varying H ∞ design, largely inapplicable. This process complexity is addressed in the present work through the temporal and the spatiotemporal multiresolution modeling along with the corresponding model-based control laws. Namely, the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous input model structure, nonlinear in the wavelet basis, but linear in parameters, is used to identify the dominant temporal chemical looping process dynamics. The control inputs and the wavelet model parameters are calculated by optimizing a quadratic cost function using a gradient descent method. The respective identification and tracking error convergence of the proposed self-tuning identifi... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial lift, decision making, fuzzy logic, oil production, Optimization
Artificial lift methods have applications in oil wells where oil production is no longer possible due to natural reservoir energy, so this necessary energy is added by introducing lift methods. In order to achieve optimum production, the selection of an artificial lift method is very important. This paper uses fuzzy logic as a mathematical and conceptual model for selection of the optimal artificial lift method. The outcome or IF-THEN rules, as the central part of the model, is based on empirical data from the selected oil fields. Results are presented in two ways: according to the surfaces of irregular geometric bodies, and their gravity with the scattering of results, i.e., on smaller and greater possibilities of interpreting results when there are small differences in outputs. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of the model is presented.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hybrid active disturbance rejection control, power plant simulator, single-loop control strategy, superheated steam temperature, tuning procedure
Superheated steam temperature (SST) is a significant index for a coal-fired power plant. Its control is becoming more and more challenging for the reason that the control requirements are stricter and the load command changes extensively and frequently. To deal with the aforementioned challenges, previously the cascade control strategy was usually applied to the control of SST. However, its structure and tuning procedure are complex. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a single-loop control strategy for SST based on a hybrid active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). The stability and ability to reject the secondary disturbance are analyzed theoretically in order to perfect the theory of the hybrid ADRC. Then a tuning procedure is summarized for the hybrid ADRC by analyzing the influences of all parameters on control performance. Using the proposed tuning method, a simulation is carried out illustrating that the hybrid ADRC is able to improve the dynamic performance of SST wit... [more]

Reversal Ventilation as a Method of Fire Hazard Mitigation in the Mines
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fire hazard, mine ventilation network, reversal ventilation, underground fires
Reversal ventilation is one of prevention methods against fire hazard in underground mines, but it is not recommended for the mines where methane is present. The authors introduce the new method of reversal and by conducting numerical simulations they prove that it allows to keep methane at the acceptable level during miners escape. However, it requires connection between the subnetworks of the main ventilation fans. It was also shown, that by using the method some escape routes will be shortened. It is possible to apply this method in the mines where the fans and stoppings are fully controlled across the full range of their operating parameters. The findings are important for underground mines, as well as for surface facilities where air control or smoke control is managed by two or more fans.

We propose an integrated geothermal system that consists of air-conditioning and hot water service ground source heat pumps, both of which share a ground water loop. The proposed system increases the COP of the service hot water ground source heat pump by recovering the condensation heat of the air-conditioning ground source heat pump as an evaporator heat source for the hot water service ground source heat pump. Eventually this integration expands the scope and capacity of the evaporator source in addition to the underground water of heat exchangers, which also leads to increase the COP of the air-conditioning ground source heat pump. Simulation Test of a DC Fault Current Limiter for Fault Ride-Through Problem of Low-Voltage DC Distribution
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: DC fault current limiter, Fault Detection, fault ride-through strategy, LVDC distribution network, short-current characteristics of faults
The low voltage direct current (LVDC) distribution networks are connected with too many kinds of loads and sources, which makes them prone to failure. Due to the small damping value in the DC lines, the fault signal propagates so fast that the impact current with the wave front of millisecond and the transient voltage pose great challenges for fault detection. Even worse, some faults with small currents are difficult to detect and the communication is out of sync, resulting in protection misoperation. These problems have severely affected the new energy utilization. In view of this, a DC fault current limiter (FCL) composed of inductance, resistance, and power electronic switch was designed in this paper. The rising speed of fault current can be decreased by the series inductance and the peak value of the fault current can be limited by series impedance, thus in this way the running time can be gained for fault detection and protection. For distributed energy access, by deducing the sh... [more]
