The Analysis of the Effectiveness of Implementing Emission Reduction Measures in Improving Air Quality and Health of the Residents of a Selected Area of the Lower Silesian Voivodship
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: health risk, lignite mine, PM10, PM2.5, WRF-CALMET/CALPUFF
The case study selected in order to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented solutions for improving air quality with the WRF-CALMET/CALPUFF modeling system as an element of decision support was the subject of this paper. Its character can be considered unique due to its geographical location, topography and the functioning PGE GiEK S.A. Turów Power Complex (ELT), and, in particular, the PGE GiEK S.A. Turów Coal Mine (KWBT). The conducted analyses have defined three scenarios of emission changes: (1) scenario related to the activities of the energy complex resulting from the minimizing measures indicated in the report on the environmental impact of the mine, (2) scenario resulting from the so-called “anti-smog” regional resolution and (3) scenario compiling the abovementioned scenarios. According to the analyses, the lowest values of the annual mean PM2.5 concentration were noted in the eastern part of the studied area and did not exceed 14 µg/m3 (56% of the permissible le... [more]

Assessment of the External Costs of Life Cycle of Coal: The Case Study of Southwestern China
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Coal, endemic diseases, external costs, life cycle assessment, southwestern China
Coal will continue to be the main energy source in China for the immediate future, although the environmental pollution and ecological impacts of each stage in the full life cycle of coal mining, transportation, and combustion generate large quantities of external costs. The Late Permian coals in southwestern (SW) China usually contain high amounts of fluorine (F), arsenic (As), and ash, which together with high-F clays cause abnormally high levels of endemic fluorosis, As poisoning, and lung cancer in areas where coal is mined and burned. In this paper, we estimate the external costs of the life cycle of coal. The results show that the externalities of coal in SW China are estimated at USD 73.5 billion or 284.3 USD/t, which would have accounted for 6.5 % of the provincial GDP in this area in 2018. The external cost of human health accounts for 87.2% of the total external costs, of which endemic skeletal fluorosis diseases and related lung cancers have the most important impact. Our st... Underground Pumped Storage Hydropower Case Studies in Belgium: Perspectives and Challenges
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: case study, hydropower, pumped storage, underground water reservoir
To avoid the geographical and topographical prerequisites of the conventional pumped hydro energy storage, the use of underground cavities as water reservoirs allows countries without steep topography, such as Belgium, to increase the potential of the energy storage capacity. Belgium abounds in disused mines and quarries convertible into water basins. In this article, two Belgian case studies are presented and discussed for their singularity. A slate quarry in Martelange is discussed in technical aspects proposing three operating scenarios. Moreover, a preliminary economic analysis of the underground pumped storage system and a greenhouse gas emission evaluation for the storage system’s lifetime are presented. The analysis for a 100 MW power plant estimates a total initial investment of over 12 million euros and two million of CO2 avoided over its lifetime. This article also proposes the use of the coal mine 500 m deep of Pérronnes-lez-Binche. The mine representation discussed here off... [more]

Modeling Air Pollutant Emissions in the Provincial Level Road Transportation Sector in Korea: A Case Study of the Zero-Emission Vehicle Subsidy
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: air quality improvement, fine particulate matter, integrated assessment model, subsidy policy, zero-emission vehicles
South Korea has been suffering from high PM2.5 pollution. Previous studies have contributed to establishing PM2.5 mitigation policies but have not considered provincial features and sector-interactions. In that sense, the integrated assessment model (IAM) could complement the shortcomings of previous studies. IAM, capable of analyzing PM2.5 pollution levels at the provincial level in Korea, however, has not been developed yet. Hence, this study (i) expands on IAM which can represent provincial-level spatial resolution in Korea (GCAM-Korea) with air pollutant emissions modeling which focuses on the road transportation sector and (ii) examines the zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) subsidy policy’s effects on PM2.5 mitigation using the expanded GCAM-Korea. Simulation results show that PM2.5 emissions decrease by 0.6−4.1% compared to the baseline, and the Seoul metropolitan area contributes 38−44% to the overall PM2.5 emission reductions. As the ZEVs subsidy is weighted towards the light-duty... [more]

Composed Index for the Evaluation of the Energy Security of Power Systems: Application to the Case of Argentina
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy security, energy transition, power system, Sustainability
Energy transitions’ trend towards sustainable systems has prompted energy systems to shift from being fossil-fuel-based to rely on renewable energy. These transitions have led the power system to occupy the center of modern infrastructures, so assuring its security has become a priority for policy makers. This work presents a tool based on a multidimensional index, the Power System Security Index (PSIx), for the evaluation of policies affecting the security of the supply of electrical energy. The developed frame is applied to the current power system of Argentina, and it is compared to the system in year 2002. Availability of resources and infrastructure are the strengths of the country, while economic, governability, and research, development and innovation spheres leave room for improvement. The further incorporation of more economies to the study would substantially enrich the statistical analysis of the results.

Long-Term Electricity Demand Prediction via Socioeconomic Factors—A Machine Learning Approach with Florida as a Case Study
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Artificial Neural Networks, data analytics, electricity demand, long-term forecasting, Machine Learning
Predicting future energy demand will allow for better planning and operation of electricity providers. Suppliers will have an idea of what they need to prepare for, thereby preventing over and under-production. This can save money and make the energy industry more efficient. We applied a multiple regression model and three Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in order to predict Florida’s future electricity use. The multiple regression model was a time series model that included all the variables and employed a regression equation. The univariant CNN only accounts for the energy consumption variable. The multichannel network takes into account all the time series variables. The multihead network created a CNN model for each of the variables and then combined them through concatenation. For all of the models, the dataset was split up into training and testing data so the predictions could be compared to the actual values in order to avoid overfitting and to provide an unbiased estimate... Sustainable Rehabilitation of Surface Coal Mining Areas: The Case of Greek Lignite Mines
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Coal, decision-making, land use, lignite, mines, optimisation, reclamation, rehabilitation, Sustainability
Surface lignite mines of the Balkan Peninsula face growing pressure due to the CO2 emissions reduction initiatives, rapidly increasing renewable-power capacity, and cheap natural gas. In this frame, the development of a modern mine land rehabilitation strategy is considered as a prerequisite for mitigating the social and economic impacts for the local communities. In the case of western Macedonia lignite mines, these prospects are investigated based on a PEST (political, economic, social, technological) analysis of seven alternative land uses. Urban (industrial) development, green houses, and industrial heritage parks are considered as the most appropriate land uses for mitigating the socioeconomic impacts due to the loss of employments. For the land uses occupying large areas (i.e., agriculture, forestry, livestock farming, and photovoltaic parks), an optimisation algorithm is proposed for determining the mix of land uses that maximise revenue, equity, and natural conservation and min... Bollinger Bands Based on Exponential Moving Average for Statistical Monitoring of Multi-Array Photovoltaic Systems
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: bollinger bands, exponential moving average, Fault Detection, low-intensity anomaly, photovoltaic systems, statistical monitoring, upper/lower band
Monitoring the performance of a photovoltaic (PV) system when environmental parameters are not available is very difficult. Comparing the energy datasets of the arrays belonging to the same PV plant is one strategy. If the extension of a PV plant is limited, all the arrays are subjected to the same environmental conditions. Therefore, identical arrays produce the same energy amount, whatever the solar radiation and cell temperature. This is valid for small- to medium-rated power PV plants (3−50 kWp) and, moreover, this typology of PV plants sometimes is not equipped with a meteorological sensor system. This paper presents a supervision methodology based on comparing the average energy of each array and the average energy of the whole PV plant. To detect low-intensity anomalies before they become failures, the variability of the energy produced by each array is monitored by using the Bollinger Bands (BB) method. This is a statistical tool developed in the financial field to evaluate the... [more]

Constrained Generation Bids in Local Electricity Markets: A Semantic Approach
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: constrained bid, local electricity market, semantic rules, semantic web technologies
The worldwide investment in renewable energy sources is leading to the formation of local energy communities in which users can trade electric energy locally. Regulations and the required enablers for effective transactions in this new context are currently being designed. Hence, the development of software tools to support local transactions is still at an early stage and faces the challenge of constant updates to the data models and business rules. The present paper proposes a novel approach for the development of software tools to solve auction-based local electricity markets, considering the special needs of local energy communities. The proposed approach considers constrained bids that can increase the effectiveness of distributed generation use. The proposed method takes advantage of semantic web technologies, in order to provide models with the required dynamism to overcome the issues related to the constant changes in data and business models. Effect of Environment-Friendly Non-Ionic Surfactant on Interfacial Tension Reduction and Wettability Alteration; Implications for Enhanced Oil Recovery
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR), Core-flooding, interfacial tension, non-ionic surfactant, wettability
Production from mature oil reservoirs can be optimized by using the surfactant flooding technique. This can be achieved by reducing oil and water interfacial tension (IFT) and modifying wettability to hydrophilic conditions. In this study, a novel green non-ionic surfactant (dodecanoyl-glucosamine surfactant) was synthesized and used to modify the wettability of carbonate reservoirs to hydrophilic conditions as well as to decrease the IFT of hydrophobic oil−water systems. The synthesized non-ionic surfactant was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and chemical shift nuclear magnetic resonance (HNMR) analyses. Further pH, turbidity, density, and conductivity were investigated to measure the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactant solutions. The result shows that this surfactant alters wettability from 148.93° to 65.54° and IFT from 30 to 14 dynes/cm. Core-flooding results have shown that oil recovery was increased from 40% (by water flooding) to 59... [more]

An Evaluation of the Wind Energy Resources along the Spanish Continental Nearshore
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, ERA5, Iberian Peninsula, offshore, Turbines, wind power
The main objective of the present work is to provide a comprehensive picture of the wind conditions in the Spanish continental nearshore considering a state-of-the-art wind dataset. In order to do this, the ERA5 wind data, covering the 20-year time interval from 1999 to 2018, was processed and evaluated. ERA stands for ’ECMWF Re-Analysis’ and refers to a series of research projects at ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) which produced various datasets. In addition to the analysis of the wind resources (reported for a 100 m height), the performances of several wind turbines, ranging from 3 to 9.5 MW, were evaluated. From the analysis of the spatial maps it was observed that the Northern part of this region presents significant wind resources, the mean wind speed values exceeding 9 m/s in some locations. On the other hand, in regard to the Southern sector, more energetic conditions are visible close to the Strait of Gibraltar and to the Gulf of Lion. Nevertheless,... [more]

Multi-Step Solar Irradiance Forecasting and Domain Adaptation of Deep Neural Networks
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: clear sky irradiance, feed-forward neural networks, LSTM cell, performances evaluation, persistent predictor, recurrent neural networks
The problem of forecasting hourly solar irradiance over a multi-step horizon is dealt with by using three kinds of predictor structures. Two approaches are introduced: Multi-Model (MM) and Multi-Output (MO). Model parameters are identified for two kinds of neural networks, namely the traditional feed-forward (FF) and a class of recurrent networks, those with long short-term memory (LSTM) hidden neurons, which is relatively new for solar radiation forecasting. The performances of the considered approaches are rigorously assessed by appropriate indices and compared with standard benchmarks: the clear sky irradiance and two persistent predictors. Experimental results on a relatively long time series of global solar irradiance show that all the networks architectures perform in a similar way, guaranteeing a slower decrease of forecasting ability on horizons up to several hours, in comparison to the benchmark predictors. The domain adaptation of the neural predictors is investigated evaluat... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: atmospheric dispersion model, cubature kalman filter, dose rate, estimation technique, extended kalman filter, gaussian plume model, radioactivity release, unscented kalman filter
The estimation of radioactivity release following an accident in a nuclear power plant is crucial due to its short and long-term impacts on the surrounding population and the environment. In the case of any accidental release, the activity needs to be estimated quickly and reliably to effectively plan a rapid emergency response and design an appropriate evacuation strategy. The accurate prediction of incurred dose rate during normal or accident scenario is another important aspect. In this article, three different non-linear estimation techniques, extended Kalman filter, unscented Kalman filter, and cubature Kalman filter are proposed in order to estimate release activity and to improve the prediction of dose rates. Radionuclide release rate, average wind speed, and height of release are estimated using the dose rate monitors data collected in proximity of the release point. Further, the estimates are employed to improve the prediction of dose rates. The atmospheric dispersion phenomen... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, energy management, network slicing, NFV, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, SDN, workload scheduling
Energy consumption is a critical issue for the communications network operators, impacting deeply the cost of the services, as well as the ecological footprint. Network slicing architecture for 5G mobile communications enables multiple independent virtual networks to be created on top of a common shared physical infrastructure. Each network slice needs different types of resources, including energy, to fulfill the demands requested by each application, operator, or vertical market. The existing literature on network slicing is mainly targeted at the partition of network resources; however, the corresponding management of energy consumption is an unconsidered critical concern. This paper analyzes the requirements for an energy-aware 5G network slicing provisioning according to the 3GPP specifications, proposes an architecture, and studies the strategies to provide efficient energy consumption in terms of renewable and non-renewable sources. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air pollution, ORC, PM2.5 dust, selection method, thermodynamic analysis, volumetric expander, working fluid
Environmental issues are nowadays of great importance. In particular air and water quality should be kept at as high levels as possible. Energy conversion systems and devices which are applied for converting the chemical energy contained in different fuels into heat, electricity and cold in the industry and housing are sources of different gases and solid particle emissions. Medical data show PM2.5 dust in particular is highly dangerous for human health. Therefore, limiting the number of low-quality fuel combustion processes is a key issue of modern energy policy. Statistical data show that domestic heating systems account for a large share of the total emissions of PM2.5 and PM10 dust. For example in Poland in 2017, the share of households in the total annual emissions of PM2.5 dust was equal to ca. 35.8%, while the share of PM2.5 emission in industry (i.e., power generating plants, industrial power plants and technologies) was equal to only 23.6%. A Numerical Model for Investigating the Steam Conformance along the Dual-String Horizontal Wells in SAGD Operations
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: dual-string, heavy oil, numerical model, SAGD, steam conformance
Non-uniformity of the steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) steam chamber significantly decreases the development of heavy oil reservoirs. In this study, to investigate the steam conformance in SAGD operations, a wellbore model is developed for fluid flow in dual-string horizontal wells. Then, a three-dimensional, three-phase reservoir model is presented. Next, the coupled wellbore and reservoir model is solved with a fully implicit finite difference method. Finally, the effects of the injector wellbore configuration, steam injection ratio and injection time on the steam conformance are investigated. The results indicate that under different injector wellbore configurations, the closer the differences between the pressure drop from the landing position of the short string to the heel of the wellbore and the pressure drop from the landing position of the short string to the toe of the wellbore, the better is the steam conformance. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: control, electric vehicles, electrical grids, energy balancing, energy trading, expansion planning, game theory, grid planning, management, power systems, reliability, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, review, survey
In this work, we review papers that employ game theoretic tools to study the operation and design of modern electric grids. We consider four topics in this context: energy trading, energy balancing, grid planning, and system reliability, and we demonstrate the advantages of using game-theoretic approaches for analyzing complex interactions among independent players. The results and conclusions provide insights regarding many aspects of design and operation, such as efficient methodologies for expansion planning, cyber-security, and frequency stability, or fair-benefit allocation among players. A central conclusion is that modeling the system from the perspective of one entity with unlimited information and control span is often impractical, so correct modeling of the selfish behavior of independent players may be critical for the development of future power systems. Another conclusion is that correct usage of incentives by appropriate regulation or sophisticated pricing mechanisms may... [more]

In this work, the two-dimensional laminar flow and the heat transfer in an open-ended rectangular porous channel (metal foam) including a phase change material (PCM; paraffin) under forced convection were numerically investigated. To gain further insight into the foam pore effect on charging/discharging processes, the Darcy−Brinkmann−Forchheimer (DBF) unsteady flow model and that with two temperature equations based on the local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) were solved at the representative elementary volume (REV) scale. The enthalpy-based thermal lattice Boltzmann method (TLBM) with triple distribution function (TDF) was employed at the REV scale to perform simulations for different porosities (0.7≤ε≤0.9) and pore per inch (PPI) density (10≤PPI≤60) at Reynolds numbers (Re) of 200 and 400. It turned out that increasing Re with high porosity and PPI (0.9 and 60) speeds up the melting process, while, at low PPI and porosity (10 and 0.7), the complete melting time increases. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have emerged as a sustainable technology for wastewater treatment that has potential to recycle bioelectricity from livestock wastewater. The performance of MFCs is influenced by the synergistic effect of anode material with nearby microorganisms. In this study, three identical double-chambered MFCs with different anode carbon clothes using swine wastewater are established. The optimization mechanism of MFC performance is analyzed by anode characteristics, cell performance, and microbial community, respectively. The results show that the surface structure and properties of the anode carbon cloth can be obviously improved by the acid−heat-modified treatment. The main purpose of this paper was to compare the pyrolysis kinetics of three types of energy crops: Miscanthus giganteus, Sida hermaphrodita, and Sorghum Moench. Studies were conducted in thermobalance. Feedstock samples were heated up from ambient temperature to 600 °C under an inert argon atmosphere. Three heating rates of β = 5, 10, and 20 °C/min were applied. Reactions occurring in the given temperature ranges were grouped together into so-called lumps identified by the deconvolution of derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) curves that corresponded to biomass compositions (hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin). For the estimation of the activation energy and pre-exponential factor, the Friedman and Ozawa−Flynn−Wall methods were used.
