Modeling the Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging Systems on Electric Power Quality
Joanna Baraniak, Jacek Starzyński
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: charging stations, e-mobility, electric power quality
Recently, there has been dynamic development of electromobility. This trend is predicted to grow exponentially, which will contribute to the creation of an extensive infrastructure of electric car charging points. For distribution network operators, this implies that in addition to the increase in demand for power and electricity, the number of converter systems connected to their networks will also increase. It is therefore necessary to determine the potential impact of electric vehicle charging systems on electricity quality. To this end, the authors of the present study developed simulation models based on measurements of the actual charger and the data provided by the manufacturers of the equipment and using simulation models widely described in the literature. On the basis of the study results, the impact of electric car chargers on electric power quality was assessed, and attention was given to the opportunities offered by the development of charging systems with vehicle-to-grid... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy-harvesting, forward error correction, link-quality, solar-powered, wireless sensor network
In solar-powered wireless sensor networks (SP-WSNs), the best use of harvested energy is more important than minimizing energy consumption since energy can be supplied periodically. Meanwhile, as is well known, the reliability of the communication between sensor nodes is very limited due to the resource constraints of sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose an efficient forward error correction (FEC) scheme which can give solar-powered wireless sensor networks more reliable communication. First, the proposed scheme provides energy-adaptive operation for the best use of solar energy. It calculates the amount of surplus energy which can be used for extra operations and then determines the number of additional parity bits for FEC according to this amount of surplus energy. At the same time, it also provides a link quality model that is used to calculate the appropriate number of parity bits for error recovery required for the current data communication environment. Finally, by considering... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: decision-making, Energy, Sustainability, text analytics, uncertainty
The managerial and environmental studies conducted in the energy research area reflect its substantial importance, particularly when optimizing and modifying consumption patterns, transitioning to renewable sources away from fossil ones, and designing plans and systems. The aim of this study is to provide a systematic review of the literature allowing us to identify which research subjects have been prioritized in the fields of energy and sustainability in recent years, determine the potential reasons explaining these trends, and categorize the techniques applied to analyze the uncertainty faced by decision-makers. We review articles published in highly ranked journals through the period 2003−2020 and apply text analytics to cluster their main characteristics; that is, we rely on pre-processing and text mining techniques. We analyze the title, abstract, keywords, and research methodology of the articles through clustering and topic modeling and illustrate what methods and fields consti... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: global warming potential (GWP), hybrid towers, life cycle assessment (LCA), Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind turbines
Increasing needs for taller wind turbines with bigger capacities, intended for places with high wind velocities or at higher altitudes, have led to new technologies in the wind energy industry. A recently introduced structural system for onshore wind turbine towers is the hybrid steel tower. Comprehension of the environmental response of this hybrid steel structural system is warranted. Even though life cycle assessments (LCAs) for conventional wind turbine tubular towers exist, the environmental performance of this new hybrid structure has not been reported. The present paper examines the LCA of 185 m tall hybrid towers. Considerations made for the LCA procedure are meticulously described, including particular attention at the erection and transportation stage. The highest environmental impacts arise during the manufacturing stage followed by the erection stage. The tower is the component with the largest carbon emissions and energy requirements. The obtained LCA footprints of hybrid... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregated power plant, distributed generation, power system stability, smart power transmission system, transmission system modeling, transmission system resilience
By integrating distributed energy resources (DER, mostly renewable energy sources) in the depth of the distribution network transmission system operators (TSOs), planning and control of transmission systems has been greatly hindered due to the lack of knowledge about the circumstances at the transmission and distribution network’s interface and the lack of coordination with the distribution system operator (DSO). By adopting the Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1485 (System Operational Guideline—SOGL) establishing a guideline on electricity transmission system operation, harmonized rules on system operation for TSOs, DSOs and significant grid users (SGUs) are set out, inter alia, in order to provide a clear legal framework for the exchange of necessary data and information between the aforementioned subjects. In this paper, the methodology of DER representation at the interface of the transmission and distributed system is presented, with the indicated interactive data exchange between... [more]
Using Load Forecasting to Control Domestic Battery Energy Storage Systems
Juha Koskela, Antti Mutanen, Pertti Järventausta
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery energy storage system, control system, load forecast
The profitability of domestic battery energy storage systems has been poor and this is the main barrier to their general use. It is possible to increase profitability by using multiple control targets. Market price-based electricity contracts and power-based distribution tariffs alongside storage of surplus photovoltaic energy make it possible to have multiple control targets in domestic use. The battery control system needs accurate load forecasting so that its capacity can be utilized in an optimally economical way. This study shows how the accuracy of short-term load forecasting affects cost savings by using batteries. The study was conducted by simulating actual customers’ load profiles with batteries utilized for different control targets. The results of the study show that knowledge of customers’ load profiles (i.e., when high and low peaks happen) is more important that actual forecast accuracy, as measured by error criteria. In many cases, the load forecast based on customers’... [more]
The Value of PV Power Forecast and the Paradox of the “Single Pricing” Scheme: The Italian Case Study
Marco Pierro, David Moser, Richard Perez, Cristina Cornaro
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy markets, photovoltaic power forecast, solar imbalance
One of the major problem of photovoltaic grid integration is limiting the solar-induced imbalances since these can undermine the security and stability of the electrical system. Improving the forecast accuracy of photovoltaic generation is becoming essential to allow a massive solar penetration. In particular, improving the forecast accuracy of large solar farms’ generation is important both for the producers/traders to minimize the imbalance costs and for the transmission system operators to ensure stability. In this article, we provide a benchmark for the day-ahead forecast accuracy of utility scale photovoltaic (PV) plants in 1325 locations spanning the country of Italy. We then use these benchmarked forecasts and real energy prices to compute the economic value of the forecast accuracy and accuracy improvement in the context of the Italian energy market’s regulatory framework. Through this study, we further point out several important criticisms of the Italian “single pricing” syst... [more]
A Novel Statistical Learning-Based Methodology for Measuring the Goodness of Energy Profiles of Applications Executing on Multicore Computing Platforms

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accurate energy modelling, anomaly detection, energy efficient computing, green computing, pattern recognition, similarity matching
Accurate energy profiles are essential to the optimization of parallel applications for energy through workload distribution. Since there are many model-based methods available for efficient construction of energy profiles, we need an approach to measure the goodness of the profiles compared with the ground-truth profile, which is usually built by a time-consuming but reliable method. Correlation coefficient and relative error are two such popular statistical approaches, but they assume that profiles be linear or at least very smooth functions of workload size. This assumption does not hold true in the multicore era. Due to the complex shapes of energy profiles of applications on modern multicore platforms, the statistical methods can often rank inaccurate energy profiles higher than more accurate ones and employing such profiles in the energy optimization loop of an application leads to significant energy losses (up to 54% in our case). In this work, we present the first method specif... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crop modeling, lignocellulosic species, second generation biofuels
Crop yields are important items in the economic performance and the environmental impacts of second-generation biofuels. Since they strongly depend on crop management and pedoclimatic conditions, it is important to compare candidate feedstocks to select the most appropriate crops in a given context. Agro-ecosystem models offer a prime route to benchmark crops, but have been little tested from this perspective thus far. Here, we tested whether an agro-ecosystem model (CERES-EGC) was specific enough to capture the differences between miscanthus and switchgrass in northern Europe. The model was compared to field observations obtained in seven long-term trials in France and the UK, involving different fertilizer input rates and harvesting dates. At the calibration site (Estrées-Mons), the mean deviations between simulated and observed crop biomass yields for miscanthus varied between −0.3 t DM ha−1 and 4.2 t DM ha−1. For switchgrass, simulated yields were within 1.0 t DM ha−1 of the experi... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Ecuador, hybrid energy systems, Modelling, Optimization, sizing, Technoeconomic Analysis
Hybrid energy systems (HESs) generate electricity from multiple energy sources that complement each other. Recently, due to the reduction in costs of photovoltaic (PV) modules and wind turbines, these types of systems have become economically competitive. In this study, a mathematical programming model is applied to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of autonomous units located in two isolated areas of Ecuador: first, the province of Galapagos (subtropical island) and second, the province of Morona Santiago (Amazonian tropical forest). The two case studies suggest that HESs are potential solutions to reduce the dependence of rural villages on fossil fuels and viable mechanisms to bring electrical power to isolated communities in Ecuador. Our results reveal that not only from the economic but also from the environmental point of view, for the case of the Galapagos province, a hybrid energy system with a PV−wind−battery configuration and a levelized cost of energy (LCOE) equal to 0... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: absorption cooling, desalination, solar energy
In this work, the analysis of a hybrid LiBr/H2O absorption-cooling and flash-desalination system, using solar thermal energy as heat source, is presented. An absorption open-cycle with three pressure levels is used in combination with a single-stage flash-desalination process to use the coolant as product water, resulting in an increase in cooling and desalination efficiency. For the application, a 20-room coastal hotel complex in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico, is taken as a case study and the sizing of the solar collection and storage system is carried out for the operation of the proposed hybrid system, during the summer operative period. The operational dynamics during the week with the highest ambient temperatures are presented. The dimensioning of the solar collector’s area and the energy storage resulted in a collection area of 620 m2 with 30 m3, respectively, reaching a solar fraction of 69%. The absorption-cooling subprocess showed an increase of 13.88% in the average coe... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon replica, Li4Ti5O12, lithium ion battery, mesoporous carbon
The Li4Ti5O12/C composites were prepared by a hydrothermal method with in situ carbon addition. The influence of the morphology and content of various carbon materials (conductive carbon black, mesoporous carbon G_157M, and carbon replicas) on the electrochemical performance of the Li4Ti5O12/C composites was investigated. The obtained composites were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microsopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and N2 sorption-desorption isotherms. Morphology of the Li4Ti5O12/C composites depends on the carbon matrix used, while both morphology and the amount of carbon material have a great impact on the rate capability and cycling stability of the obtained composites. At low current densities, the Li4Ti5O12/C composite with 5 wt.% G_157M exhibits the highest discharge capacity, while at high charge-discharge rates, the Li4Ti5O12/carbon black composites show the best electrochemical... Taeyoon Kim, Taewon Song, Sangheon Pack
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autonomous driving, connected car, Energy Efficiency, Markov chain, Markov decision process, message dissemination, platoon-based driving, vehicular network
With the development of the convergence of IT and automotive technology, platoon-based driving systems are getting more attention and how to disseminate messages in the platoon is an important issue. In this paper, to enhance the energy efficiency and traffic throughput (e.g., average velocity) while meeting transmission deadlines, we propose an energy efficient message dissemination scheme (EMDS) in platoon-based driving systems, which also provides proper power control and relay selection. To find out the optimal policy to balance the probability of successful message dissemination and transmission power cost in EMDS, we formulate a Markov decision process (MDP) problem that considers the velocity of the vehicles in the platoon. To evaluate the performance of EMDS, we analyze the outage probability, the average velocity, and the expected power consumption using the discrete-time Markov chain (DTMC) model. Evaluation results demonstrate EMDS with the optimal policy improves the averag... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: dynamic energy tariffs, electric mix, heat pumps, heating demand management, primary energy, urban-scale decarbonization
Heat pumps (HP) are an efficient alternative to non-electric heating systems (NEHS), being a cost-effective mean to support European building sector decarbonization. The paper studies HP and NEHS performance in residential buildings, under different climate conditions and energy tariffs, in six different European countries. Furthermore, a primary energy and environmental analysis is performed to evaluate if the use of HPs is more convenient than NEHS, based on different factors of the electric mix in each country. A specific HP model is developed considering the main physical phenomena occurring along its cycle. Open data from building, climatic and economic sources are used to feed the analysis. Ad hoc primary energy factors and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission coefficients are calculated for the selected countries. The costs and the environmental impact for both heating systems are then compared. The outcomes of the study suggest that, in highly fossil fuels dependent electricity mixes,... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bubble dissolution, non-hydrate condition, salinity, temperature dependence
To investigate the temperature dependency of the methane bubble dissolution rate, buoyant single methane bubbles were held stationary in a countercurrent water flow at a pressure of 6.9 MPa and temperatures ranging from 288 K to 303 K. The 1 to 3 mm diameter bubbles were analyzed by observation through the pressure chamber viewport using a bi-telecentric CCD camera. The dissolution rate in artificial seawater was approximately two times smaller than that in pure water. Furthermore, it was observed that the methane bubble dissolution rate increased with temperature, suggesting that bubble dissolution is a thermal activation process (the activation energy is estimated to be 9.0 kJ/mol). The results were different from the expected values calculated using the governing equation for methane dissolution in water. The dissolution modeling of methane bubbles in the mid-to-shallow depth of seawater was revised based on the current results.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dye-sensitized solar cells, ferrocene, iodine-free electrolyte
A series of functionalized ferrocene derivatives carrying electron-donor and electron-withdrawing (hetero)aromatic substituents has been designed as potential alternative electrolyte redox couples for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC). The compounds have been synthesized and fully characterized in their optical and electrochemical properties. A general synthetic approach that implies the use of a microwave assisted Suzuki coupling has been developed to access a significative number of compounds. The presence of different electron-rich and electron-poor substituents provided fine tuning of optical properties and energy levels. HOMO and LUMO energy values showed that the substitution of one or two cyclopentadienyl rings of ferrocene can be successfully exploited to increase the maximum attainable voltage from a standard DSSC device using TiO2 as a semiconductor, opening the way to highly efficient, non-toxic, and cheap redox shuttles to be employed in solar energy technologies.

Keywords: anomaly detection, data mining, Gantt chart-based visualization, heat maps, moving entities, route patterns, self-organizing Kohonen maps, visual analytics
Employees of different critical infrastructures, including energy systems, are considered to be a security resource, and understanding their behavior patterns may leverage user and entity behavior analytics and improve organization capabilities in information threat detection such as insider threat and targeted attacks. Such behavior patterns are particularly critical for power stations and other energy companies. The paper presents a visual analytics approach to the exploratory analysis of the employees’ routes extracted from the logs of the access control system. Key elements of the approach are interactive self-organizing Kohonen maps used to detect groups of employees with similar movement trajectories, and heat maps highlighting possible anomalies in their movement. The spatiotemporal patterns of the routes are presented using a Gantt chart-based visualization model named BandView. The paper also discusses the results of efficiency assessment of the proposed analysis and visualiza... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ash formation, combustion, fluidized bed conversion, gasification, wheat straw lignin
Thermal conversion of ash-rich fuels in fluidized bed systems is often associated with extensive operation problems caused by the high amount of reactive inorganics. This paper investigates the behavior of wheat straw lignin—a potential renewable fuel for dual fluidized bed gasification. The formation of coherent ash residues and its impact on the operation performance has been investigated and was supported by thermochemical equilibrium calculations in FactSage 7.3. The formation of those ash residues, and their subsequent accumulation on the surface of the fluidized bed, causes temperature and pressure fluctuations, which negatively influence the steady-state operation of the fluidized bed process. This paper presents a detailed characterization of the coherent ash residues, which consists mostly of silica and partially molten alkali silicates. Furthermore, the paper gives insights into the formation of these ash residues, dependent on the fuel pretreatment (pelletizing) of the wheat... [more]
Feedforward Compensation Analysis of Piezoelectric Actuators Using Artificial Neural Networks with Conventional PID Controller and Single-Neuron PID Based on Hebb Learning Rules
Cristian Napole, Oscar Barambones, Isidro Calvo, Javier Velasco
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control systems, feed-forward, hysteresis, piezoelectric, precise position
This paper presents a deep analysis of different feed-forward (FF) techniques combined with two different proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control to guide a real piezoelectric actuator (PEA). These devices are well known for a non-linear effect called “hysteresis” which generates an undesirable performance during the device operation. First, the PEA was analysed under real experiments to determine the response with different frequencies and voltages. Secondly, a voltage and frequency inputs were chosen and a study of different control approaches was performed using a conventional PID in close-loop, adding a linear compensation and a FF with the same PID and an artificial neural network (ANN). Finally, the best result was contrasted with an adaptive PID which used a single neuron (SNPID) combined with Hebbs rule to update its parameters. Results were analysed in terms of guidance, error and control signal whereas the performance was evaluated with the integral of the absolute err... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: California, Energy Storage, energy transition, EROI, grid mix, hourly data, life cycle assessment, lithium-ion battery, net energy analysis, photovoltaic
This paper presents a detailed life-cycle assessment of the greenhouse gas emissions, cumulative demand for total and non-renewable primary energy, and energy return on investment (EROI) for the domestic electricity grid mix in the U.S. state of California, using hourly historical data for 2018, and future projections of increased solar photovoltaic (PV) installed capacity with lithium-ion battery energy storage, so as to achieve 80% net renewable electricity generation in 2030, while ensuring the hourly matching of the supply and demand profiles at all times. Specifically—in line with California’s plans that aim to increase the renewable energy share into the electric grid—in this study, PV installed capacity is assumed to reach 43.7 GW in 2030, resulting of 52% of the 2030 domestic electricity generation. In the modelled 2030 scenario, single-cycle gas turbines and nuclear plants are completely phased out, while combined-cycle gas turbine output is reduced by 30% compared to 2018. Re... [more]
Combustion Analysis of a Diesel Engine during Warm up at Different Coolant and Lubricating Oil Temperatures
Faisal Lodi, Ali Zare, Priyanka Arora, Svetlana Stevanovic, Mohammad Jafari, Zoran Ristovski, Richard J. Brown, Timothy Bodisco
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion duration, diesel engine cold start, end of combustion, ignition delay, mass fraction burned, peak AHRR, peak pressure timing, start of combustion
A comprehensive analysis of combustion behaviour during cold, intermediately cold, warm and hot start stages of a diesel engine are presented. Experiments were conducted at 1500 rpm and 2000 rpm, and the discretisation of engine warm up into stages was facilitated by designing a custom drive cycle. Advanced injection timing, observed during the cold start period, led to longer ignition delay, shorter combustion duration, higher peak pressure and a higher peak apparent heat release rate (AHRR). The peak pressure was ~30% and 20% and the AHRR was ~2 to 5% and ±1% higher at 1500 rpm and 2000 rpm, respectively, during cold start, compared to the intermediate cold start. A retarded injection strategy during the intermediate cold start phase led to shorter ignition delay, longer combustion duration, lower peak pressure and lower peak AHRR. At 2000 rpm, an exceptional combustion behaviour led to a ~27% reduction in the AHRR at 25% load. Longer ignition delays and shorter combustion durations... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: dean flow, microfluidics, micromixer, thermal, ultrasound
Micromixing is a key process in microfluidics technology. However, rapid and efficient fluid mixing is difficult to achieve inside the microchannels due to unfavourable laminar flow. Active micromixers employing ultrasound and thermal energy are effective in enhancing the micromixing process; however, integration of these energy sources within the devices is a non-trivial task. In this study, ultrasound and thermal energy have been extraneously applied at the upstream of the micromixer to significantly reduce fabrication complexity. A novel Dean micromixer was laser-fabricated to passively increase mixing performance and compared with T- and Y-micromixers at Reynolds numbers between 5 to 100. The micromixers had a relatively higher mixing index at lower Reynolds number, attributed to higher residence time. Dean micromixer exhibits higher mixing performance (about 27% better) than T- and Y-micromixers for 40 ≤ Re ≤ 100. Influence of ultrasound and heat on mixing is more significant at 5... [more]

Keywords: cellulosic ethanol, conditioning, detoxification, inhibitors, lignocellulose biorefining, sodium dithionite
Conditioning of lignocellulosic hydrolysates with sulfur oxyanions, such as dithionite, is one of the most potent methods to improve the fermentability by counteracting effects of inhibitory by-products generated during hydrothermal pretreatment under acidic conditions. The effects of pH, treatment temperature, and dithionite dosage were explored in experiments with softwood hydrolysates, sodium dithionite, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. Treatments with dithionite at pH 5.5 or 8.5 gave similar results with regard to ethanol productivity and yield on initial glucose, and both were always at least ~20% higher than for treatment at pH 2.5. Experiments in the dithionite concentration range 5.0−12.5 mM and the temperature range 23−110 °C indicated that treatment at around 75 °C and using intermediate dithionite dosage was the best option (p ≤ 0.05). The investigation indicates that selection of the optimal temperature and dithionite dosage offers great benefits for the efficient fermen... [more]
