Sustainable Oil Palm Resource Assessment Based on an Enhanced Deep Learning Method
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deep learning, Faster Region-Based Convolutional Neural Network, feature map concatenation, oil palm tree, resource assessment, sustainable
Knowledge of the number and distribution of oil palm trees during the crop cycle is vital for sustainable management and predicting yields. The accuracy of the conventional image processing method is limited for the hand-crafted feature extraction method and the overfitting problem occurs due to the insufficient dataset. We propose a modification of the Faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (FRCNN) for palm tree detection to reduce the overfitting problem and improve the detection accuracy. The enhanced FRCNN (EFRCNN) leads to improved performance for detecting objects (in the same image) when they are of multiple sizes by using a feature concatenation method. Transfer learning based on a ResNet50 model is used to extract the features of the input image. High-resolution images of oil palm trees from a drone are used to form the data set, containing mature, young, and mixed oil palm tree regions. We train and test the EFRCNN, the FRCNN, a CNN used recently for oil palm image... [more]

A Noncontact Magneto−Piezo Harvester-Based Vehicle Regenerative Suspension System: An Experimental Study
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Energy Conversion, energy harvesting, energy scavenger, magnetic excitation, MTS testing, piezoelectric harvester, RMS of power, shock absorber
Recent research has examined the possibility of recovering energy from mechanical vibration induced by a vehicle shock absorber using piezoelectric and electromagnetic transducers. In terms of automotive applications, piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting shows promise for recapturing some (even if small) amounts of vehicle vibration energy, which would otherwise be wasted through the vehicle dampers. Functional materials, such as piezoelectric materials, are capable of converting mechanical energy into useful electrical energy and vice versa. In this paper, an innovative rotational piezoelectric vibration-energy-harvesting device is presented that employs a magnetic coupling mechanism and provides robust performance over a range of frequencies. The piezoelectric energy harvester is driven by a unidirectional suspension system. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the performance of the manufactured prototype. We observed no damage to the prototype after operating... [more]

Modelling Study of Cycle-To-Cycle Variations (CCV) in Spark Ignition (SI)-Controlled Auto-Ignition (CAI) Hybrid Combustion Engine by Using Reynolds-Averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES)
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: controlled auto-ignition, cycle-to-cycle variation, hybrid combustion, large eddy simulation, spark ignition
The spark ignition (SI)-controlled auto-ignition (CAI) hybrid combustion is characterized by early flame propagation combustion and subsequent auto-ignition combustion. The application of combined SI−CAI hybrid combustion can be used to effectively extend the operating range of CAI combustion and achieve smooth transitions between SI and CAI combustion modes. However, SI−CAI hybrid combustion can produce significant cycle-to-cycle variations (CCV). In order to better understand the sources of CCV and minimize its occurrence, the large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) approaches were employed in this study to model and understand the cyclic phenomenon of SI−CAI hybrid combustion. Both the multi-cycle LES and RANS simulations were analyzed against the experimental measurements in a single cylinder engine at 1500 rpm and a 5.43 bar average indicated the mean effective pressure (IMEP). The detailed analysis of the in-cylinder pressure traces, IMEP, in-cylind... [more]

Effect of Color Temperature and Illuminance on Psychology, Physiology, and Productivity: An Experimental Study
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: experimental designs, lighting control, lighting environment, productivity, satisfaction
In this study, we investigated the impact of the lighting environment on psychological perception, physiology, and productivity and then designed lighting control strategies based on the experimental results. The research was conducted in a smart lighting laboratory, and 67 subjects were tested in different illuminances and correlated color temperatures (CCTs). During the experiment, the physiological data of subjects were continuously recorded, while the psychology and productivity results were evaluated by questionnaires and working tests, respectively. The experimental results found that both illuminance and CCT could significantly influence the feeling of comfort and relaxation of the subjects. Warm CCT and higher illuminance (3000 K−590 lux) made subjects feel more comfortable. Productivity reached its maximum value with illuminance above 500 lux and equivalent melanopic lux (EML) higher than 150. The brain-wave and heart-rate changes did not have a close relationship with either... [more]

Aerodynamic Study on the Influence Mechanism of Bow Blades on the Flow Field of Supersonic Tandem Rotors
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Compressors, negative bow blades, positive bow blades, supersonic tandem rotors, the hub region and casing region, the stall margin
In order to research the influence mechanism of bow blades on the flow field of supersonic tandem rotors of compressors, the supersonic rotor rotor37 is taken as the prototype and redesigned as a supersonic tandem rotor. Compared with the prototype rotor37, the efficiency of the design tandem rotor is increased by 0.24% and the stall margin is increased by about 5.6%. Although the negative bow blade deteriorates the flow field in the tip region and the hub region, it significantly increases the efficiency and total pressure ratio of the tandem rotor from 20% span to 85% span. The efficiency of the design point of the tandem rotor with a negative bow angle of 10° is improved by 0.37%, and the stall margin is also increased to 20.71%. Positive bow blades improve the efficiency of the hub region and casing region of tandem rotors, but they significantly reduce the efficiency of the tandem rotor from 10% to 50%. The positive bow blade reduces the pressure ratio and efficiency at the design... [more]

Three Technical Challenges Faced by Power Systems in Transition
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: broadband resonance stability, electromagnetic transient analysis, electromechanical transient analysis, failure of phase locking, generalized synchronization stability, non-synchronous generator source, phase locked loop, power synchronization loop, s-domain nodal admittance matrix, time delay out-of-step
In the 21st century, the worldwide concern about global warming has forced energy to transform in the direction of low-carbon and non-carbon. The utilization of renewable energy is developing rapidly, which makes the non-synchronous generator sources become the main part of the newly added power sources. Based on the fundamentals of AC power grid operation, this paper describes three technical challenges faced by the power system in transition: the inadequacy of the classic synchronization stability concept in representing the new synchronization connotation of AC power systems with large proportion of non-synchronous generator sources; the inapplicability of the electromechanical transient analysis method in analyzing the generalized synchronization stability; and the wideband resonance instability caused by negative resistance of power electronic equipment. The decisive factors for maintaining the generalized synchronization stability, the countermeasure to solve the inapplicability... [more]

Combined Economic Emission Dispatch with and without Consideration of PV and Wind Energy by Using Various Optimization Techniques: A Review
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined economic emission dispatch, optimization techniques, PV solar, renewable energy systems, wind energy
Combined economic emission dispatch (CEED) problems are among the most crucial problems in electrical power systems. The purpose of the CEED is to plan the outputs of all production units available in the electrical power system in such a way that the cost of fuel and polluted emissions are minimized while respecting the equality and inequality constraints of the system and efficiently responding to the power load required. The rapid depletion of these sources causes limitation and increases the price of fuel. It is therefore very important that scientific research in the last few decades has been oriented toward the integration of renewable energy systems (RES) such as wind and PV as an alternative source. Furthermore, the CEED problem including RES is the most important problem with regard to electrical power field optimization. In this study, a classification of optimization techniques that are widely used, such as traditional methods, non-conventional methods, and hybrid methods, i... [more]

Backward Step-Up Control Strategy for Bidirectional LLC Resonant Converter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: backward step-up mode, control strategy, LLC resonant converter, synchronous rectification, voltage gain
An LLC resonant converter has the advantages of simple structure and soft switching. It can enable bidirectional power transmission, but it is difficult to realize a normalized gain greater than one under backward mode (backward step-up mode). Cascaded dc/dc converters or topological changes can solve this problem, but additional switches and components are required and losses are added. Without changing the LLC resonant converter’s basic topology, this paper proposes a variable duty-cycle control strategy of primary side switches for backward step-up mode. Using variable duty-cycle control, the LC resonant tank can be charged, and then the backward step-up mode can be realized. Soft switching characteristics of some primary side switches and all secondary side switches are guaranteed. In this study, the working principle of an LLC resonant converter under bidirectional control strategy was analyzed, and the backward step-up control was analyzed in detail. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: composite cooling, conjugate heat transfer, sweeping jet, URANS
The internal heat transfer performance and flow structures of a sweeping jet and film composite cooling on a flat plate were numerically studied. Sweeping jet and film composite cooling consists of a fluidic oscillator and 20 cylindrical film holes; the direct jet is formed by removing the feedback from the fluidic oscillator, which is different from the traditional cylindrical nozzle. Four different mass flow rates of coolant were considered, and the inclination angle of the film hole was 30°. The Conjugate Heat Transfer method (CHT) and Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equation (URANS) were employed. The results indicated that the flow resistance coefficients of the sweeping jet were larger than those of the direct jet, and the Nusselt number monotonously increased with the increase in the mass flow rate. Compared to the direct jet, the sweeping jet had a more spatially uniform heat removal rate, and the area-averaged Nusselt number was slightly lower. Therefore, the sweeping... [more]

Harnessing Task Usage Prediction and Latency Sensitivity for Scheduling Workloads in Wind-Powered Data Centers
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: data center, latency-aware workload scheduler, renewable energy sources, resource prediction, wind power
The growing number of data centers consumes a vast amount of energy for processing. There is a desire to reduce the environmental footprint of the IT industry, and one way to achieve this is to use renewable energy sources. A challenge with using renewable resources is that the energy output is irregular as a consequence of the intermittent nature of this form of energy. In this paper, we propose a simple and yet efficient latency-aware workload scheduler that creates an energy-agile workload, by deferring tasks with low latency sensitivity to periods with excess renewable energy. The scheduler also increases the overall efficiency of the data center, by packing the workload into as few servers as possible, using neural-network-based predictions of resource usage on an individual task basis to avoid unnecessarily provisioning an excess number of servers. The scheduler was tested on a subset of real-world workload traces, and real-world wind-power generation data, simulating a small-sca... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D printing, energy harvester, MEMS, multi-frequency
Multi-frequency operation is an interesting and desired feature of electromagnetic energy harvesters. This work presents results of investigations on an inkjet 3D-printed miniature multi-frequency electromagnetic energy harvester. Vibrating microstructures utilizing springs with constant thickness (300 μm) and widths from 220 to 500 μm were designed, fabricated, and characterized as parts of the miniature energy harvester. Resonant frequencies of the microstructures were measured, and electrical parameters of the harvester were determined. The harvesters operated in the 85−185 Hz frequency range with 32 µW maximal output power. Thanks to flexibility in designing and fabrication by 3D printing, it was possible to develop an energy harvester with at least two operating frequencies within a single harvester structure in many possible two-frequency configurations.

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Adsorption, ICP-MS, Nannochloropsis oculata, SEM, vanadium oxide
Given that vanadium is a valuable material, the implementation of vanadium recycling processes is thus necessary to enhance the element’s value chain as well as minimize its undesirable environmental consequences. Among various remediation methods available, a biological method based on microalgal adsorption is known to be eco-friendly and calls for further investigations. Herein, we evaluated V2O5 adsorption efficiencies of four different microalgal strains: Nannochloropsis oculata, Heterocapsa circularisquama, Chattonella marina, and Chattonella antiqua. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) data indicated that vanadium concentration in the culture medium of Nannochloropsis oculata was reduced from 4.61 ± 0.11 mg L−1 to 1.85 ± 0.21 mg L−1 after being exposed to V2O5 solution for 24 h, whereas the supernatants of the other three strains displayed no change in vanadium ion concentration. Fully Decentralized, Cost-Effective Energy Demand Response Management System with a Smart Contracts-Based Optimal Power Flow Solution for Smart Grids
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: blockchain, decentralized, optimal power flow, smart contracts, smart grid
Recent advances in control, communication, and management systems, as well as the widespread use of renewable energy sources in homes, have led to the evolution of traditional power grids into smart grids, where passive consumers have become so-called prosumers that feed energy into the grid. On the other hand, the integration of blockchain into the smart grid has enabled the emergence of decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading, where prosumers trade their energy as tokenized assets. Even though this new paradigm benefits both distribution grid operators and end users in many ways. Nevertheless, there is a conflict of interest between the two parties, as on the one hand, prosumers want to maximize their profit, while on the other hand, distribution system operators (DSOs) seek an optimal power flow (OPF) operating point. Due to the complexity of formulating and solving OPF problems in the presence of renewable energy sources, researchers have focused on mathematical modeling an... [more]

The Impact of Agricultural Production Efficiency on Agricultural Carbon Emissions in China
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural carbon emission, agricultural production efficiency, carbon emission reduction, super-efficiency SBM model, threshold effect
With the rapid development of China’s economy, China has become the world’s largest carbon emitter. China not only has an obvious growth rate of industrial carbon emissions but also the intensity of agricultural carbon emissions is hovering at a high level. The development of China’s agricultural economy has largely come at the expense of high emissions. Currently, under the background of global warming and difficulty in controlling greenhouse gas emissions, the development of low-carbon agriculture is an important way to realize the harmonious development of the ecological environment and economic growth and to promote the sustainable development of agriculture. The agricultural production efficiency is the main factor affecting the intensity of agricultural carbon emissions. Based on provincial panel data of China from 2010 to 2019, this paper establishes an indicator system and uses the super-efficiency SBM model to measure agricultural production efficiency. Toward a Carbon-Neutral State: A Carbon−Energy−Water Nexus Perspective of China’s Coal Power Industry
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon–energy–water nexus, CCUS, energy transition, life cycle coal power production
Carbon neutrality is one of the most important goals for the Chinese government to mitigate climate change. Coal has long been China’s dominant energy source and accounts for more than 70−80% of its carbon emissions. Reducing the share of coal power supply and increasing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) in coal power plants are the two primary efforts to reduce carbon emissions in China. However, even as energy and water consumed in CCUS are offset by reduced energy consumption from green energy transitions, there may be tradeoffs from the carbon−energy−water (CEW) nexus perspective. This paper developed a metric and tool known as the “Assessment Tool for Portfolios of Coal power production under Carbon neutral goals” (ATPCC) to evaluate the tradeoffs in China’s coal power industry from both the CEW nexus and financial profits perspectives. While most CEW nexus frameworks and practical tools focus on the CEW nexus perturbation from either an external factor or one sector... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: ARMAX model, environmental taxes, GIS, greenhouse gas emissions
The research presented in the article was aimed at verifying the effectiveness of environmental taxes in reducing the level of greenhouse gas emissions. For this purpose, data provided by Eurostat in the environmental taxes category were used. They were treated as explanatory variables. Data were entered into the ARMAX models built by the authors. The dependent variable was the emission of two greenhouse gases covered by the research, namely carbon dioxide and methane. The research was carried out in Poland, for which the results obtained for Sweden were used as the benchmark. The built models made it possible to verify the relationship between environmental taxes in the categories of energy, transport, pollution, resources, and the level of CO2 and CH4 emissions. The nature of the explanatory variable was also examined. Environmental taxes can fulfill a fiscal, incentive, and redistributive function. Study on the Imbibition Damage Mechanisms of Fracturing Fluid for the Whole Fracturing Process in a Tight Sandstone Gas Reservoir
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: imbibition damage, imbibition experiment, linxing gas field, low-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, tight sandstone gas
Tight sandstone gas is a significant unconventional natural gas resource, and has been exploited economically mostly through the application of hydraulic fracturing technology in recent decades. However, formation damage occurs when fracturing fluid percolates into the pores inside sandstones through imbibition driven by capillary pressure during fracturing operations. In this work, the formation damage resulting from the whole operation process composed of fracturing, well shut-in and flowback, and the degree of damage at different moments were investigated through core flow experiments and the low-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) technique. The results show that imbibition damage occurs starting from the contact surface between the formation and the fracturing fluid, which penetrates into an increasingly deep position with time down to a certain depth. The T2 spectra of NMR at different moments indicates that fracturing fluid initially enters the small pores, followed by the la... [more]

The Impact of Enterprise R&D Investment and Government Subsidies on Technological Progress: Evidence from China’s PV Industry
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: driving mechanism, government subsidies, PV industry, R&D investment, technological progress
China has become the major stakeholder in global photovoltaic (PV) technology. However, the existing mechanistic interpretation of “what promotes the technological progress of the Chinese PV industry” is controversial. This paper takes China’s A-share listed PV enterprises from 1999 to 2019 as the research sample and uses a panel fixed-effect regression model to empirically test the impact of research and development (R&D) investment and government subsidies on the technological progress of PV enterprises. The results show that there is an “N”-shaped nexus between R&D investment and technological progress, and most PV enterprises are in the climbing stage of the N-shaped curve. With the development of the PV industry, the nexus will undergo a transformation from inverted U-shaped to N-shaped, indicating that R&D investment is a key driver of PV technological progress. Yet, government subsidies are a “double-edged sword”. They have a significant positive direct effect on PV technologica... [more]

Two-Stage Chance-Constrained Coordinated Operation of an Integrated Gas−Electric System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: chance constraint, integrated gas–electric systems, MILP, penetration, Taylor series expansion, two-stage
Under the background that the high penetration of renewable energy generation, which mainly consists of wind power, will have a significant impact on electric power systems due to the volatility and uncertainty of renewable energy, energy systems with gas−electric coupling and interconnections have been widely studied to accommodate renewable energy generation. This paper proposes a two-stage chance-constrained coordinated operation model of an integrated gas−electric system and fully considers the uncertainty and high penetration of wind power. The Taylor series expansion method is used to linearize the Weymouth gas flow equation of a natural gas system and finally obtains a mixed integer linear programming model. Case studies show the effectiveness of the integrated energy system for peak shaving, valley filling, and promoting wind power accommodation. The proposed model ensures the consumption of wind power generation and also reduces the operation cost by about 0.7%.

For these reasons, a solar dryer with a partitioned collector was developed that creates a double airflow travel distance to delay the airflow inside the collector. The partitioning of the collector delays the airflow and helps to create more turbulence for the airflow with increased energy. The solar dryer was locally developed at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture and tested during the humid crop harvesting period of September for the worst-case scenario. The obtained drying curves and kinetics for cocoyam drying are subjected to the vagaries of weather conditions.
