Hongjing Jing, Wenzhe Li, Ming Wang, Hao Jiao, Yong Sun
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anaerobic fermentation, electron acceptor, function gene, microbial flora, propionic acid conversion
To improve the conversion efficiency of propionic acid in the post-anaerobic fermentation of biogas slurry, the anaerobic fermentation process using biogas slurry with a high acid content was simulated in an anaerobic reactor at 35 ± 0.5 °C using sodium propionate as the sole substrate. The effects of different electron acceptors (NO3−, SO42− and Fe3+) on propionic acid conversion and the succession of microbial community structures were investigated. The results showed that the experimental group with the electron acceptor NO3− exhibited the best anaerobic fermentation effect, with a maximum propionate removal rate of 94%, which was 36% higher than the control group without an electron acceptor. The maximum methane production rate was 307.6 mL/g COD, an increase of 30% compared with the control group. Thauera, Aquabacterium, Desulfomicrobium, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, and other functional microorganisms were all enriched. The dominant functional genes related to redox reactions, su... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 12-pulse rectification, commutation overlap angle, coupled admittance matrix, harmonic model, unbalanced voltage
This paper treats a parallel 12-pulse rectifier as the study subject. The influence of unbalanced terminal voltage, the triggering angle, as well as the commutation angle of a thyristor-controlled rectifier circuit are considered in switching functions. Then, a frequency-domain harmonic coupled admittance matrix under the effect of positive sequence and negative sequence voltages are proposed, respectively. With the integration of the above matrices, a harmonic coupled admittance matrix model of a parallel 12-pulse rectifier under unbalanced voltage is proposed. On this basis, a simplified harmonic model of a 12-pulse rectifier is established, which only considers the effect of major elements through analyzing the elements’ distribution and magnitude of the harmonic coupled admittance matrix, as well as the AC current harmonic producing mechanism. All the models proposed in this paper are verified with high accuracy through simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. The models proposed in this pap... [more]

Keywords: direct numerical simulation, enhancement, lean, ozone, premixed, Syngas, turbulence
Due to its enhancement in the flame speed, ozone added in lean premixed syngas turbulent jet flame was investigated by the three-dimensional direct numerical simulation method in the near field of the flame. In the present study, numerical simulations were conducted in the lean premixed syngas turbulent jet flame configuration to explore the effects of ozone addition on freely-propagating turbulent flames. It was seen that turbulence began to significantly affect the flame surface to produce wrinkles in lean premixed gas flame with ozone added after 4D; ozone started to affect the composition field and temperature field after 8D; it accelerated the generation of intermediate products, OH and O radicals; and it will promote the production of CO2 in the near field range. Ozone will increase the flame surface area of the lean premixed syngas flame during the ignition period and can promote the ignition process and make the combustion occur earlier. The flame surface of the case with ozone... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: coal power, life cycle assessment (LCA), low emission, pollutant emissions, wind power
This study focuses on the life cycle assessment (LCA) of an onshore wind farm in India. The study is conducted on 10 Vestas 1.65 MW wind turbines situated in the Karnataka state of India. Following the ISO 14044 standard, SimaPro LCA software is used to model the process. The functional unit is chosen as 1 MWh sent out electricity. The results of the life cycle-based emissions of wind farm are compared with those of the coal power plant. The global warming potential is found to be 11.3 g CO2-eq/MWh for wind power, which is 98.8% lower than that for the coal power plant. A comparison of data available in SimaPro LCA software was carried out with data in GaBi software. There is a small difference between the two databases. This may be due to different boundary and inclusion of input items. Steel, aluminium, and concrete contributed 86%, 84%, 84% and 85% of total CO2, NOx, SO2 and PM2.5 emissions, respectively. Recycling the materials of a wind turbine at the end of its life can reduce th... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current harmonic suppression, deadbeat predictive control (DPC), interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), multiple synchronous rotating frame transformation (MSRFT)
When the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is running, there are abundant harmonics in the stator current. In order to achieve the suppression of current harmonics, the current harmonic extraction method and current harmonic controller are studied in this paper. Firstly, a simple and accurate method for extracting current harmonics is proposed by means of multiple synchronous rotating frame transformation (MSRFT). Secondly, an improved deadbeat predictive control (IDPC) based current harmonic controller is designed after analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of traditional current harmonic controllers. Thirdly, IDPC-based current harmonic suppression strategy is proposed by combining the proposed current harmonic extraction method and the proposed current harmonic controller. The proposed strategy can still effectively achieve current harmonic suppression when the motor runs at low speed, medium speed and high speed and the controller parameters are mismatched wi... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: burning velocity in gutter, DNAN, energetic materials, Mg, pyrotechnic compositions, SrO2
Burning velocities of binary and ternary pyrotechnic compositions are measured in gutter. The study focuses on the determination of the joint influence of several parameters: oxidant/reducer ratio, reducer granulometry, and binder content. Measurements are performed following the standard NF T70-541 for burning velocity estimation using an optical acquisition method. Binder content has a linear influence on the burning velocity with a pivot point in slope at supposed stoichiometry. Changing the granulometric class of metallic reducer shows to have different influences before and beyond a 20% diameter reduction.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, gasification, incineration, material recovery, multicriteria decision, sewage sludge
The management and disposal of sewage sludge is becoming a growing concern at the global level. In the past, the main goal was to completely eliminate sewage sludge since it was deemed a threat to humans and the environment, but recently different possibilities for energy generation and material recovery are emerging. Existing technologies such as incineration or direct application in agriculture contribute to quantity reduction and nutrient recovery but are unable to fully exploit the potential of sewage sludge within the frameworks of circular economy and bioeconomy. This paper developed a model within the PROMETHEE method, which analyses technologies for the sustainable management of sewage sludge, which could make the most from it. For the empirical part of the study, the Republic of Croatia was used as a country in which sewage sludge is increasing in quantity as a result of recent upgrades and expansions in the wastewater system. Incineration, gasification, anaerobic digestion, a... [more]
Measurements and Modelling of Vapour−Liquid Equilibrium for (H2O + N2) and (CO2 + H2O + N2) Systems at Temperatures between 323 and 473 K and Pressures up to 20 MPa

Keywords: carbon capture and storage, Carbon Dioxide, high pressure, high temperature, nitrogen, NRTL model, SAFT-γ Mie, vapour–liquid equilibrium, Water
Understanding the phase behaviour of (CO2 + water + permanent gas) systems is critical for implementing carbon capture and storage (CCS) processes, a key technology in reducing CO2 emissions. In this paper, phase behaviour data for (H2O + N2) and (CO2 + H2O + N2) systems are reported at temperatures from 323 to 473 K and pressures up to 20 MPa. In the ternary system, the mole ratio between CO2 and N2 was 1. Experiments were conducted in a newly designed analytical apparatus that includes two syringe pumps for fluid injection, a high-pressure equilibrium vessel, heater aluminium jacket, Rolsi sampling valves and an online gas chromatograph (GC) for composition determination. A high-sensitivity pulsed discharge detector installed in the GC was used to measure the low levels of dissolved nitrogen in the aqueous phase and low water levels in the vapour phase. The experimental data were compared with the calculation based on the γ-φ and SAFT-γ Mie approaches. In the SAFT-γ Mie model, the li... [more]
Exploring the Impact of Parallel Architecture on Improving Adaptable Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems for Gas-Insulated Switch Defect Recognition
I-Hua Chung, Yu-Hsun Lin
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive class neuro-fuzzy inference systems, gas-insulated switches, partial discharge
Gas-insulated switchgear malfunctions during power system operation may occur due to electrical, thermal, or human errors in the manufacturing process. The leading causes of insulation deterioration of gas-insulated switchgear are discharging along the surface caused by dirt on the insulating material, internal discharge caused by impurities and cavities in the insulating material, corona discharge caused by poor assembly or construction at the site, and electric tree channel discharge caused by the intense internal discharge. Since different defects produce different partial discharge characteristics, the operating power equipment can be analyzed using measurement instruments to detect partial discharge for preventive equipment fault diagnosis, avoiding unnecessary power outages and losses; therefore, evaluating the defects in gas-insulated switchgear is essential. In this study, three gas-insulated switchgears were prefabricated with different defects before encapsulation, and the pa... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Dombi aggregation operators, interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets, multi-attribute decision-making
Dombi t-norm (DTN) and t-conorm (TCN) are among the most effective triangular norms in fuzzy systems for aggregation purposes. The environment of interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy (IVIF) set gives us precision in expressing uncertain information by using a membership grade (MG) and non-membership grade (NMG) in the form of closed subintervals of 0, 1. The goal of this paper is to introduce DTN-based aggregation operators (AOs) for IVIF numbers (IVIFNs) and study their performance in the evaluation of the worth of energy recourses to be opted in Pakistan to deal with the energy crises situation. We first introduced some DTN and TCN-based operations for IVIFNs and developed two new AOs known as IVIF Dombi weighted averaging (IVIFDWA) and IVIF Dombi weighted geometric (IVIFDWG) operators. The validity and fitness of the proposed operators are tested. A case study is presented where the energy resources of Pakistan are discussed and the problem of the selection of sustainable energ... Keywords: biochar, Biomass, downdraft gasification, synthesis gas
Rapid climate change and forecasted damage from fossil fuel combustion, forced researchers to investigate renewable and clean energy sources for the sustainable development of societies throughout the world. Biomass-based energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources for meeting daily energy needs, which are gaining in popularity daily. Gasification-based bioenergy production is an effective way to replace fossil fuels and reduce CO2 emissions. Even though biomass gasification has been studied extensively, there is still much opportunity for improvement in terms of high-quality syngas generation (high H2/CO ratio) and reduced tar formation. Furthermore, the presence of tar has a considerable impact on syngas quality. Downdraft gasifiers have recently shown a significant potential for producing high-quality syngas with lower tar concentrations. This article presents a comprehensive review on the advancement in biomass downdraft gasification technologies for high-quality s... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: charcoal, global warming potential, life cycle assessment, renewable reductants, upgrading
Renewable reductants are intended to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from ferro-alloy production, e.g., by up to 80% in 2050 in Norway. However, charcoals provide inferior properties compared to fossil fuel-based reductants, which can hamper large replacement ratios. Therefore, conditioning routes from coal beneficiation was investigated to improve the inferior properties of charcoal, such as mechanical strength, volatile matter, CO2 reactivity and mineral matter content. To evaluate the global warming potential of renewable reductants, the CO2 emissions of upgraded charcoal were estimated by using a simplified life cycle assessment, focusing on the additional emissions by the energy demand, required chemicals and mass loss for each process stage. The combination of ash removal, briquetting and high-temperature treatment can provide a renewable coke with superior properties compared to charcoal, but concomitantly decrease the available biomass potential by up to 40%, increasing the... Keywords: catalyst, combustion, control, dust duct, optimal droplet diameter
The article presents a method of controlling the size of droplets generated by a system that sprays a high-viscosity liquid containing particles of a solid body, i.e., a catalyst. The work is a continuation of previous research concerning the spraying of liquids with a catalyst, which improves the efficiency of the process. As a result of the conducted CFD calculations, it was found that to bring the catalyst to the system, a droplet with a diameter of at least 30 µm should be generated. The tests were carried out on a laboratory scale on a model isopropanol-water system. A polymer containing Raney nickel particles was added to the suspension. The analysis of the obtained data confirmed the possibility of generating droplets with the desired diameters in order for the liquid carrying the catalyst to not evaporate before it is delivered to the combustion chamber. The designed and constructed test system allows the diameters of the generated droplets to be controlled by changing the sett... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade element momentum theory, dissipation, entropy, vorticity, wind turbine analysis
Several physics-based enhancements are embedded in a low-fidelity general unducted rotor design analysis tool developed, py_BEM, including the local Reynolds number effect, rotational corrections to airfoil polar, stall delay model, high induction factor correction, polar at large angle of attack, exergetic efficiency calculation and momentum-based loss. A wind turbine rotor is analyzed in high fidelity designed from py_BEM using a 3D blade generator. It is a design derived from the NREL Phase VI rotor. Three design variations are analyzed using steady 3D CFD solutions to demonstrate the effect of geometry on aerodynamics. S809 and NACA 2420 airfoil properties are used for calculating the aerodynamic loading. Momentum, vorticity and energy transport are explained in depth and connected to entropy production as a measure of performance loss. KE dissipation downstream of the rotor is shown to be a significant contributor of entropy rise. Wake analysis demonstrates mixing with the free st... [more]

Keywords: electromobility, local governments, low carbon energy, questionnaires, survey
The aim of this article is to diagnose the situation of electromobility in local government units of Polish municipalities. Besides the main features of the communes, the issue of type of strategy that is being built was raised, what are the trends in this respect, and how public transport fits into them? The empirical basis was a survey conducted in 2020 using the CAWI (computer assisted web interview) method, covering all 2477 communes in Poland. Responses were received from 2230 municipalities (90% response rate). Based on the statistical analysis, the main conclusion is that rural communes are less willing to implement the electromobility strategy, but if they decide to do so, they develop long-term strategies. Another conclusion is that the amount of budget revenue per capita does not affect decisions on building an electromobility strategy. Also, a general tendency in Poland is an increase in the propensity to invest in electromobility, mainly in infrastructure for users, compare... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: abutment pressure, gob-side roadway, irregular gob, irregular pillar, isolated panel
Aiming at the phenomenon of a large amount of roof subsidence and rib caving in the gob-side roadway under the special “umbrella” coal pillar in isolated panel No. 325 of Yangcun Coal Mine, the stress distribution regularity of the gob-side roadway under a “umbrella” coal pillar was studied in detail by establishing mathematical models, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulations. The results show that the following: (1) The stress distribution regularity of the irregular coal pillar is actually the mechanical structure of irregular gob. (2) The abutment pressure of the gob is always distributed vertically along the edge of the gob. When the edge of the gob intersects diagonally with the gob roadway, the stress distribution of the surrounding rock of the roadway cannot be calculated only by the width of the coal pillar—the angle between the edge of the gob and the roadway should also be considered. (3) The abutment pressure at each cusp position in irregular gob extends in the oppo... [more]

Keywords: cybersecurity, electric vehicle (EV), electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), EV chargers, power system security
Worldwide growth in electric vehicle use is prompting new installations of private and public electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). EVSE devices support the electrification of the transportation industry but also represent a linchpin for power systems and transportation infrastructures. Cybersecurity researchers have recently identified several vulnerabilities that exist in EVSE devices, communications to electric vehicles (EVs), and upstream services, such as EVSE vendor cloud services, third party systems, and grid operators. The potential impact of attacks on these systems stretches from localized, relatively minor effects to long-term national disruptions. Fortunately, there is a strong and expanding collection of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) cybersecurity best practices that may be applied to the EVSE environment to secure this equipment. In this paper, we survey publicly disclosed EVSE vulnerabilities, the impact of EV charger cyberattacks, and... [more]

Keywords: carbon allowance, COVID-19, crude oil price, renewable energy stocks, spillover effect, technology stocks, time-frequency connectedness
To obtain the price return and price volatility spillovers between renewable energy stocks, technology stocks, oil futures and carbon allowances under different investment horizons, this paper employs a frequency-dependent method to study the dynamic connectedness between these assets in four frequency bands. The results show that, first, there is a strong spillover effect between these assets from a system-wide perspective, and it’s mainly driven by short-term spillovers. Second, in the time domain, technology stocks have a more significant impact on renewable energy stocks compared to crude oil. However, through the study in the frequency domain, we find renewable energy stocks exhibit a more complex relationship with the other two assets at different time scales. Third, renewable energy stocks have significant spillover effect on carbon prices only in the short term. On longer time scales, other factors such as energy prices, climate and policy may have a greater impact on carbon al... [more]

Keywords: Cronbach’s alpha, energy security, principal component, varimax
This study introduces Pakistan’s multidimensional energy security index (PMESI) and indices across dimensions from 1991 to 2020 through indicator optimization. Based on criteria, expert participation, and reliability testing, 27 indicators were identified and weighted based on dimension reduction utilizing the Varimax Rotation technique. As a result of robust evaluation framework, there has been a considerable change in Pakistan’s energy security when compared to other studies such as the energy security indicator of Pakistan (ESIP) and the energy security index of Pakistan (ESIOP). According to the findings, energy security decreased by 25% between 1991 and 2012, followed by a modest increase through 2020. During the study period, the “Affordability” dimension improved; however, the other four dimensions, namely “Availability,” “Technology,” “Governance,” and “Environment,” regressed. Few goals under the petroleum policy (1991), petroleum policy (2012), and power policy (2013) were pa... [more]
Assessment of the Modeling of Demand Response as a Dispatchable Resource in Day-Ahead Hydrothermal Unit Commitment Problems: The Brazilian Case

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: day-ahead dispatch, demand response, hydrothermal scheduling, mixed integer programming, unit commitment
Modern power systems have experienced large increases in intermittent and non-dispatchable sources and a progressive reduction in the size of hydro reservoirs for inflow regularization. One method to mitigate the high uncertainty and intermittency of the net load is by Demand Response (DR) mechanisms, to allow a secure and reliable system dispatch. This work applied a mixed integer linear programming formulation to model DR as a dispatchable resource in the day-ahead hydrothermal scheduling problem, taking into account minimum load curtailment constraints, minimum up/down load deduction times, as well as piecewise linear bid curves for load shedding in eligible loads. The methodology was implemented in the official model used in Brazil and tested in large-scale problems to obtain the optimal daily dispatch and hourly pricing. The results show the positive impact of dispatchable DR loads in cost reduction and in mitigating peak values of energy prices, even for predominantly hydro syste... [more]
A Flexible Deep Learning Method for Energy Forecasting

Keywords: artificial neural networks, deep learning, flexible load forecasting, hybrid model, Machine Learning, time series
Load prediction with higher accuracy and less computing power has become an important problem in the smart grids domain in general and especially in demand-side management (DSM), as it can serve to minimize global warming and better integrate renewable energies. To this end, it is interesting to have a general prediction model which uses different standard machine learning models in order to be flexible enough to be used in different regions and/or countries and to give a prediction for multiple days or weeks with relatively good accuracy. Thus, we propose in this article a flexible hybrid machine learning model that can be used to make predictions of different ranges by using both standard neural networks and an automatic process of updating the weights of these models depending on their past errors. The model was tested on Mayotte Island and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) obtained was 1.71% for 30 min predictions, 3.5% for 24 h predictions, and 5.1% for one-week prediction... [more]

Keywords: collapse mechanism, dynamic response, tower-line system, transmission tower, wind load
Transmission towers are prone to collapse under strong wind load, resulting in significant economic losses. In order to investigate the collapse mechanism and failure modes of the transmission tower under strong wind load and whether the wind vibration factor can greatly reflect the increasing effect of the fluctuating wind, the finite element method (FEM) is utilized to analyze the ultimate bearing capacity of a typical 220 kV transmission tower. The results show that the collapse of the tower under strong wind loads is usually due to the buckling of the leg members. When the reference wind speed is equal to 27 m/s, a small part of the main leg members reaches their yield strength, while the diagonal members are still in the elastic range, and the deformation of the transmission tower is unapparent at this wind speed. When reference wind speed is equal or greater than 30 m/s, the growing variety of main legs is totally into the plastic yield stage, and the overall deformation of this... [more]

Keywords: circular economy (CE), Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), European Union (EU), factor analysis (FA), Sustainability, sustainable development indicators (SDI)
This paper presents the assessment of the European Union member states in terms of the circular economy (CE) targets, using a combination of the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method and factor analysis. This approach fills in the existing knowledge gap by providing an innovative methodology of an objectivised comparative evaluation of the degree of implementation of the CE principles by the EU countries. Assessing countries’ performance in achieving the goals of the circular economy is a challenge due to the lack of a generally accepted methodology, the multitude of indicators, and the insufficient data. Countries may be compared in a narrow way, according to single indicators, but a more holistic synthetic assessment of countries is also needed to determine their position against each other. In such cases, DEA may be successfully used. The study resulted in the identification of two clusters of countries with similar profiles of relative efficiency in the CE goals’ implementation. I... Keywords: AQWA, behaviors of capture energy, Coulomb torque, hydraulic power take-off, linear damping, wave energy converter
The AQWA software is often used to perform hydrodynamic analysis, and it is highly convenient for performing frequency domain simulations of Pelamis-like wave energy converters. However, hydraulic power take-off (PTO) must be simplified to a linear damping model or a Coulomb torque model when performing a time domain simulation. Although these simulation methods can reduce the computational complexity, they may not accurately reflect the energy capture characteristics of the hydraulic PTO. By analyzing system factors such as the flow and pressure of each branch of the hydraulic PTO, the output torque of the hydraulic cylinder to the buoy, and the electromagnetic torque of the generator, a relatively complete hydraulic PTO model is obtained, and the model is applied to AQWA using the FORTRAN language. Comparing and analyzing the simulation results of the linear damping model, the Coulomb torque model, and the hydraulic PTO, we found that the simulation results obtained by the linear dam... [more]
