Study on Influence of Joint Locations and Hydraulic Coupling Actions on Rock Masses’ Failure Process
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acoustic emission, crack propagation, energy accumulation and dissipation, hydraulic coupling, jointed rock masses
Distribution of joints and fissures under hydraulic coupling condition is particularly critical to the stability of surrounding rock masses in underground engineering construction. In this paper, DDARF (Discontinuous Deformation Analysis for Rock Failure) and RFPA (Rock Failure Process Analysis) are compared and analyzed firstly based on laboratory tests. Then using preferred software RFPA, the failure process, stress state, acoustic emission characteristics and energy dissipation laws of rock masses with different joint locations are analyzed under the hydraulic coupling condition. Results show that a large tensile stress region is generated on both ends of the original joint with the micro-cracks’ propagation, water pressure in cracks promotes the generation of tensile stress to a certain extent, damage effect angle increases gradually from the rock specimen with the middle joint to that with the marginal joint; the same water pressure has a certain auxiliary effect on the main crack... High Performance Hybrid Vehicle Concept—Preliminary Study and Vehicle Packaging
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cooling, performances, PHEV
The aim of this work was to develop the design of a direct liquid cooling system for a battery pack of a high-performance plug-in hybrid vehicle. The cooling system of the battery pack is of an innovative type, with the direct cooling of the power busbars and the poles of the lithium cells. In order to obtain preliminary information for the dimensioning and verification of the battery pack cooling system, a simulation model of the whole vehicle and its powertrain was developed. In this way, the current profiles to which the storage system will be subjected can be estimated and can be used to fine-tune the cooling system. The use of a simulation model of the entire vehicle was necessary because the vehicle is still at the design stage, and only experimental data on the specific consumption of the internal combustion engine and experimental characterization data of the lithium cells used, as well as data provided by the manufacturers of the electric motors and inverters, are currently av... An Experimental Study of the Heat Storage and the Discharge Performance and an Economic Performance Analysis of a Flat Plate Phase Change Material (PCM) Storage Tank
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dynamic simulation, economic analysis, PCM storage tank, solar heating system
Solar heating technology has the advantages of being high efficiency, energy-saving, and environment protecting; however, the instability of solar energy and its mismatch with the variation characteristics of building heat load have caused great difficulties in the design and the efficient operation strategy of a solar system. A heat storage tank is an important part of a solar hot water system. In order to improve system efficiency, this paper proposes a flat plate PCM storage tank, establishes a mathematical model, and conducts experimental verification under different working conditions. Experiments show that in the heat storage process, the phase change material (PCM) only accounts for less than 20% of the space of the PCM storage tank, and its heat storage can reach 50% of the total heat storage of the tank. In the discharge process, the water temperature of the ordinary tank decreases by 20 °C within 1.5 h, and the phase change process lasts approximately 3 h, with the water temp... [more]

Capturing Consumers’ Awareness and the Intention to Support Carbon Neutrality through Energy Efficient Consumption
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon neutrality, consumer awareness, electricity consumption behavior
The EU has several directives aiming toward carbon neutrality and is attempting to promote and encourage individual electricity consumers to participate in this endeavor. The key idea behind consumer awakening and activation is to push consumers to become aware of their electricity consumption behavior. The purpose of this paper was to examine the current consumption behavior of Finnish electricity consumers and their intention to support the goals of carbon neutrality through energy efficient consumption. The aim was to reveal how far the consumption behavior of people was from the intention to tackle climate change. To reach this goal, a qualitative research method was applied to evaluate the consumer awareness and intentions. A consumer survey was conducted to enable standardized and consistent data collection. The research utilized a key performance indicator (KPI) approach to evaluate the results: the social KPIs connected with qualitative values provide a comprehensive approach.... [more]

Adaptive Charge-Compensation-Based Variable On-Time Control to Improve Input Current Distortion for CRM Boost PFC Converter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: boost power factor correction (PFC), critical conduction mode (CRM), real time, total harmonics distortion (THD), variable on-time (VOT)
For boost power factor correction (PFC) converters operating in critical conduction mode (CRM), charge compensation strategies are utilized to improve input current distortion. However, since massive calculations are required under complex working conditions, it is difficult to achieve accurate charge compensation with limited real-time computing resources. To solve this issue, this paper proposes an adaptive charge-compensation-based variable on-time (ACVOT) control strategy. The ACVOT controller calculates the required switching on-time by adding a fundamental value and an extended on-time. The fundamental value is adjusted by the loop compensator in each half-line cycle to provide a basic bias. The extended on-time is calculated based on partial charge compensation equation in each switching cycle to reduce the distortion. Compared with conventional digital variable on-time (VOT) control, the proposed strategy improves the input current total harmonics distortion (THD) and reduces t... [more]

Development of Design Method for River Water Source Heat Pump System Using an Optimization Algorithm
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: CO2 emissions, economic analysis, optimization algorithm, optimum design method, river water source heat pump
River water source heat pump (RWSHP) systems are being proposed to reduce the energy consumption and carbon emissions of buildings. The RWSHP system is actively applied to large-scale buildings due to its stable performance. The application of RWSHP in large-scale facilities requires an accurate capacity design with considerations of building load, heat source, and environment conditions. However, most RWSHP systems are over-designed based on peak load of buildings. These design methods, based on peak loads, are economically and environmentally disadvantageous. Therefore, this paper aims to development an optimal design method, both economically and environmentally, for the RWSHP system. To develop this optimal design method, a simulation model was created with an optimization algorithm. The economics of the RWSHP system were calculated bases on present worth of annuity factor. Moreover, CO2 emissions were estimated using the life cycle climate performance proposed by the International... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: electric vehicles, microgrid, optimal control, Optimization, Planning, smart grid
In this paper, a survey is presented on the use of optimization models for the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging stations (CSs) in the energy system, paying particular attention both to planning problems (i.e., those problems related to long term decisions such as the siting and sizing of CSs), and operational management problems (i.e., the optimal scheduling of EVs in smart grids, microgrids and buildings taking into account vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities). Moreover, specific attention was dedicated to decision problems that couple transportation and electrical networks, such as the energy demand assessment for a vehicle over a path and routing and charging decision problems for goods and people transportation. Finally, an effort was dedicated to highlighting the integration and the use of EVs in very recent regulation frameworks, with specific reference to the participation in the balancing market through the figure of an aggregator and the inclusion in the mana... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: characterization method, condensate oil, molecular dynamics simulation, multiphase flow, wax precipitation and deposition, wellbore blockage
Condensate oil is increasingly valued as the high-quality conventional hydrocarbon resources generally decline. The efficient development of condensate oil, however, has always been a world problem; massive condensate oil will be retained in reservoirs in case of improper exploitation process, resulting in a significant resource waste and economic loss. One of the problems closely related to enhancing condensate oil recovery is wax precipitation and deposition in wellbore. Therefore, it is vital to investigate the characterization methods for the wax precipitation and deposition behavior in wellbores. The current status of research on modelling characterization methods, experimental characterization methods and molecular dynamics representation of wax precipitation and deposition behavior is reviewed in this paper; the applicability and limitation of modeling and experiment studies for characterizing wax precipitation and deposition of condensate oil in the wellbore are critically summ... Intelligent Controlled DSTATCOM for Power Quality Enhancement
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: DSTATCOM, fuzzy neural network, power factor, power quality, THD, wavelet theory
In this study, a three-phase four-wire distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is proposed to improve power quality, including the compensation of the three-phase unbalanced grid currents, the total harmonic distortion (THD) reduction of the grid current, and the power factor (PF) correction. Moreover, when different types of loads vary in the power system, the instantaneous power follows into or out of the DC-link capacitor in the DSTATCOM and results in poor transient responses of the grid current and DC-link voltage and performance deterioration. Hence, the DC-link voltage control plays a significant part in the DSTATCOM under load variation. For the purpose of mending the transient responses of the grid currents and DC-link voltage control and the performance of the DSTATCOM, the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller is substituted with a novel online trained wavelet Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy neural network (WTSKFNN) controller in this study. An Adaptable Net Zero Model: Energy Analysis of a Monitored Case Study
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptable requirements, energy efficiency measures, monitored case study analysis, net zero verification, renewable power production, reorganized net zero concepts
Increased efforts toward climate change mitigation and achieving net zero (NZ) are occurring globally. This research addresses three challenges to meeting the target NZ goals: (1) quantifying energy use reduction approaches, including energy efficiency and renewable power; (2) obtaining measured data to verify NZ achievements; and (3) providing NZ definitions to a globally understandable concept. To do so, a reorganized NZ concept (NZX%) is proposed that is practical, measurable, and adaptable to different regions and requirements. The “X%” presents the fraction of renewable energy to the total energy used, and the “ORG” defines the organization’s NZ definition that a project uses. The objective of this proposal is to create a universally NZ concept and method, using measured utility power data, by (1) determining a baseline NZX%; (2) projecting an optimized NZX%; (3) measuring and reporting the actual NZX%. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environment monitoring, odorants, odour impact, olfactometry, portable GC, sewage system
Odorant emissions are associated with, among other things, wastewater transport in sewer networks; they contribute to air pollution and result in complaints from residents living close to emission sources. The critical location in terms of the formation of unpleasant odour compounds is the pressure line that connects the pumping station and the expansion well; this is where they are released into the atmosphere. This paper presents comprehensive results of olfactometric and chromatographic tests in the Polish city of Białystok using portable devices that allow for multiple determinations and instant results. The study attempts to investigate the relationship between odour and odorant concentrations and check the suitability of field olfactometry as a tool for the ongoing monitoring of the emission of noxious odours and for verifying complaints submitted by residents. Statistical analysis shows a very high correlation coefficient between cod and the concentrations of individual odorants... [more]

Polyimide Copolymers and Nanocomposites: A Review of the Synergistic Effects of the Constituents on the Fire-Retardancy Behavior
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: flame-retardant polymers, nanocomposites, phosphazenes, polyimide, synergistic fire retardants
Carbon-based polymer can catch fire when used as cathode material in batteries and supercapacitors, due to short circuiting. Polyimide is known to exhibit flame retardancy by forming char layer in condensed phase. The high char yield of polyimide is attributed to its aromatic nature and the existence of a donor−acceptor complex in its backbone. Fabrication of hybrid polyimide material can provide better protection against fire based on multiple fire-retardancy mechanisms. Nanocomposites generally show a significant enhancement in mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. Nanoparticles, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, can enhance flame retardancy in condensed phase by forming a dense char layer. Silicone-based materials can also provide fire retardancy in condensed phase by a similar mechanism as polyimide. However, some inorganic fire retardants, such as phosphazene, can enhance flame retardancy in gaseous phase by releasing flame inhibiting radicals. The flame inhibiting... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: gravity, microgravity monitoring, mining water disaster, water migration
Excessive water inflow in a mine poses a great threat to its operation, especially in the case of a salt mine. In 1992, a rapid outflow of water occurred in the Mina traverse in the Wieliczka Salt Mine, and a number of investigations were undertaken to assess the causes of the outflow and the condition of the rock mass, including the gravity and microgravity surveys discussed in this paper. The first of these was to investigate the rock mass with respect to its geological, hydrogeological properties and mining. The aim of study was to monitor the changes in the rock mass density and the impact of these changes on the subsidence of the ground surface. The surveys provided information on the geological structure of the study area and helped to identify possible routes for water migration. The first data confirmed density changes in the shallow parts of the rock mass, manifested by subsidence of the land surface. However, the subsequent measurements failed to show any significant density... [more]

Quantitative Analysis of Cenozoic Extension in the Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea: Insight on Tectonic Control for Hydrocarbon Reservoir Accumulation and Formation
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: extension, fractal, hydrocarbon reservoir, Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea, structure
Cenozoic extension rates were calculated based on 20 seismic profiles across the Qiongdongnan Basin, South China Sea. The results confirmed that the Cenozoic rifting in the Qiongdongnan Basin exhibited multistage extension and spatiotemporal variation. In terms of the N−S striking seismic profiles, the structural forms of the northern and southern sags of the basin were characterized by narrow half grabens, while the structure at the center sag of the basin was characterized by wide and gentle grabens. The fault strikes in the west of the basin were mainly northeast−southwest trending, whereas those in the east of the basin changed from northeast−southwest trending to nearly east−west trending. The extension rate in the east sag was higher than that in the west area. The extension rate in the middle part was lower relative to the east and west sags. This was because the rifting was controlled by the distribution of the main boundary fault along the basin. Temporally, the Cenozoic exten... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bidirectional power flow control, current sources, energy router, grid-forming control, Model Predictive Control, nonlinear load
The focus of this study is on the grid-forming operation of the Energy Router (ER) based on Model Predictive Control (MPC). ER is regarded as a key component of microgrids. It is a converter that interfaces the microgrid (s) with the utility grid. The ER has a multiport structure and bidirectional energy flow control. The ER concept can be implemented in Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (NZEB) to provide flexible energy control. A concept is proposed where the ER works as a single grid-forming converter. The challenge is to keep the predefined reference voltage and frequency inside the NZEB in all possible modes, including the idle operation mode, current sources, and nonlinear load control. To gain stability and output voltage quality, the MPC is proposed. The design of the modified MPC algorithm with improved dynamics performance is explained. PLECS software is utilized to verify the proposed algorithm. The results demonstrate the suitable performance of the proposed control method in te... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrical losses, generation stability, harmonic distortion, HVDC, line commutated converter, voltage source converter
Cahora Bassa, a thyristor-based High Voltage Direct (HVDC) link, transmits 1920 MW of power from a hydro-power plant in Zambezi River, north of Mozambique, to Apollo Substation in Johannesburg, South Africa. The high degree of harmonics distortion that is transferred into the AC side of the transmission network and the continuous increase in the rate at which commutation failure occurs during systems disturbance are both flaws in the utilization of this HVDC converter technology. AC and DC filters with rugged controllers are often used to minimize this effect but are limited in scope. Modern converter technology, such as the Voltage Source Converter (VSC), was proposed in this study to reduce harmonics content level, increase power transfer capabilities, enhance network stability, and reduce the rate of commutation failure occurrence. This paper, therefore, evaluates the performance analysis of the Cahora Bassa HVDC link and its level of harmonic distortion in the line commutated conve... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electromechanical coupling, energy harvesting, magnetic levitation
This paper focuses on the modelling and analysis of electromechanical coupling in a magnetic levitation energy harvester. A prototype harvester is built and its performance is tested with a shaker under resonance conditions. In order to modify the electromechanical coupling, a specially designed coil stack consisting of four independent coils is proposed. The configuration of the coil and the gap between them change the shape of the electromechanical coupling function. The results obtained show that the proper configuration of the modular coil allows one to modify the shape of the electromechanical coupling, increasing the recovered energy, and widens the resonance operating bandwidth.

Effect of Operating Head on Dynamic Behavior of a Pump−Turbine Runner in Turbine Mode
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic stress, fluid-structure interaction, head, numerical simulation, pump–turbine
Pumped storage units improve the stability of the power grid, and the key component is the pump−turbine. A pump−turbine usually needs to start and shutdown frequently, and the operating head varies greatly due to changes in the water level of the reservoir, which makes the dynamic behavior of a pump−turbine runner extremely complex. This paper investigates the effects of operating head on the dynamic response characteristics of a pump−turbine runner in turbine mode. The flow characteristics of the pump−turbine at maximum head, rated head and minimum head are analyzed, and the dynamic response characteristic of the pump−turbine runner are numerically studied. The results show that operating head can affect the pressure pulsation and dynamic stress characteristics of the pump−turbine runner, but it has little effect on the frequency spectra. The conclusions of this paper intend to improve understanding of the effects of the operating head on the dynamic behavior of the pump−turbine runne... [more]
