Beata Jaworska-Jóźwiak, Marek Dziubiński
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Bingham plastic fluids, deflocculant, energy savings, hydrotransport, pressure drop
The subject of the research was limestone hydromixture consisting of particles of a mean size of 45.5 μm conveyed by water in a pipeline of a total length of 632 m. In the paper, the results of rheological measurements of tested hydromixtures after the application of deflocculant consisting of waste product from the lime production process in the form of mineral particles and commonly known dispersant were presented. Calculations of pressure drop including hydromixtures with volume concentrations in the range of 21.30−50.00%, and density ranging from 1140−1410 kg/m3 in a pipeline of 200 mm diameter are presented. A decrease in friction losses in the flow in the pipeline of hydromixtures with different mass concentrations after the addition of deflocculant was observed. The study revealed that the addition of deflocculant resulted in a reduction of friction in the pipeline, enabling the pumping of hydromixtures with twice higher solids concentrations than originated from industrial inst... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: accelerated augmented Lagrangian algorithm, distributed generator, linear approximation, reactive power optimization, transmission and distribution coordination
As many distributed power sources flood into the distribution network, the relationship between transmission and distribution grids in reactive power and voltage is becoming closer and closer. The traditional way of independent reactive power optimization in transmission and distribution grids is no longer appropriate. In this study, a collaborative and distributed reactive power optimization method for transmission and distribution grids based on the accelerated augmented Lagrangian (AAL) algorithm is proposed to adapt to the independence of the transmission and distribution grids in operation and management. The global reactive power optimization problem is decomposed into the transmission network subproblem and several distribution network subproblems. According to AAL, subproblems are solved in a distributed manner until the optimal global solution is finally reached after several iterations, and coordination between transmission and distribution grids is achieved only through the... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency, line start permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor, power factor curve valley, whole load region
Line start permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (LSPMaSynRM) is an important high-efficiency and high-quality motor. Its parameter matching and operating characteristics are complex, with an increase in salient ratio resulting in a valley in the power factor curve. In this study, the formation principle of power factor curve valley was first deduced by the mathematical model of LSPMaSynRM. Then, the parameter matching principle of power factor curve valley was analyzed in detail. On this basis, the characteristics of load rate corresponding to the critical state of the power factor curve valley were obtained, and its influence on whole load efficiency was analyzed. The design principles for optimal efficiency in wide high-efficiency region and specific load point were obtained. Finally, a 5.5 kW LSPMaSynRM was designed and manufactured to verify the validity of the principle.
Investigation of the Temperature Sensitivity of 20-Years Old Field-Aged Photovoltaic Panels Affected by Potential Induced Degradation
Oscar Kwame Segbefia, Tor Oskar Sætre
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: field-aged, leakage current, potential induced degradation, shunting, temperature coefficient
One effect of moisture ingress on solar panels is potential induced degradation (PID). Solar panels affected by PID experience large leakage currents between the solar cells and the module’s frame, which leads to substantial power degradation. In the present work, the temperature coefficients of 3 old PV panels affected by PID were investigated. In the electroluminescence images, solar cells nearer to the edge of the modules appear darker due to ohmic shunting. IR thermal images acquired under clear sky outdoor conditions show that the majority of the warmer cells (hotspots) were located closer to the edge of the modules. The difference in cell temperature (∆T) due to PID effect ranges from 7 °C to 15 °C for the 3 field-aged modules. The average temperature coefficient of efficiency (βηm) was found to be −0.5%/°C. Also, it was observed that the temperature coefficients of open circuit voltage (βVoc = −0.4%/°C), maximum power point voltage (βVmpp = −0.5%/°C), and fill factor (βFF = −0.2... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex network theory, natural gas pipeline network, robustness, the shortest path, topology
With the improvement of natural gas network interconnection, the network topology becomes increasingly complex. The significance of analyzing topology is gradually becoming prominent, and a systematic analysis method is required. This paper selects two typical natural gas pipeline networks: one in Europe, and the other in North China. Based on complex network theory and the nature of natural gas pipelines, topological models for the two typical networks were established and the evaluation indexes were developed based on four factors: network type, overall topological structure characteristics, path-related topological structure characteristics, and topological structure robustness. Using these indexes, the topological structure of the two typical networks is compared and analyzed quantitatively. The comparison shows that the European network topology has more redundancy, higher transmission efficiency, and greater robustness. The topology analysis method proposed in this paper is pract... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coupling characteristics of creep fracture, mechanical condition of foundation–soil structure, vibration equation, wind load, wind turbine
In view of the nonlinear mechanical characteristics of rock foundation creep fracture and its influence on the stability of wind turbine under wind load, based on the influence of wind load, this paper proposed the elastoplastic creep fracture and rock foundation bearing capacity on wind turbine. Considering the superstructure concrete with rock foundation and its boundary conditions, the wind load standard value was obtained and wind turbine system composition was constructed. The two grades of freedom system of viscous damping vibration model was proposed. Furthermore, the frequency characteristic equations and the relations of the first- and second-order natural frequencies were obtained. Considering plastic yield theory on power hard rock base material, the analytical expressions of principal stress distribution, plastic zone, and plastic state of I-II composite crack were obtained and used for coupling Mohr−Coulomb plastic yield condition and creep fracture characteristics. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blower, compressor, correlation, design, empirical, regenerative flow pump
Regenerative flow machines are known to be simple in construction but complex in flow characteristics. Due to this reason, the design of these machines has been primarily esoteric, and hence its performance heavily relies on the experience and expertise of the designer. Since there are no established rules of thumb for designing them, this paper attempts to provide simple design correlations for systematically designing regenerative flow machines viz. pumps, blowers, and compressors. Three different impeller designs have been considered, namely the (i) single-side vane impeller, (ii) double-side vane impeller, and (iii) peripheral vane impeller, for the three types of machines. More than ten design parameters have been considered for sizing the machines. Experimental and computational data available in open literature have been used to obtain physically meaningful correlations in simple form, and require minimal and practically available inputs. Fluid properties and practical constrain... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: acoustic emission, fracture propagation dynamics, fracture tortuosity, fracturing fluid rheology, hydraulic fracturing
In the last decade, the negative impact of hydraulic fracturing fluids on the reservoir properties has been noted, which has led to the new trend of improving characteristics and developing new hydraulic fracturing fluids. As an alternative option to the traditionally used cross-linked fluids based on guar solution, in our laboratory we have tested fluids having a branched spatial structure, which allowed them to hold and transport proppants, despite the low viscosity of this kind of fluids (100−200 mPa·s measured at 100 s−1). Existing theoretical models of hydraulic fracture (HF) propagation have some limitations in predicting the influence of fracturing fluids on reservoir properties. Unfortunately, in situ experiments in the target reservoir are difficult and expensive. Thus, laboratory experiments can be considered as a reasonable alternative for testing new fluids, since they can provide comprehensive information about the properties of the created HF before the application of a n... Keywords: diagnostic information, diagnostic process, expert system, intelligent systems, knowledge base, neural networks, reliability, servicing process, wind farm device
The article deals with simulation tests on the reliability of the equipment of the wind farm WF in the operation process. The improvement, modernization, and introduction of new solutions that change the reliability, as well as the quality and conditions of use and operation of wind farm equipment, require testing. Based on these tests, it is possible to continuously evaluate the reliability of the equipment of WF. The issue of reliability assessment of wind farm equipment, for which intelligent systems, diagnostic systems DIAG, and Wind Power Plant Expert System (WPPES) are used to modernize the operation process, can only be tested in a simulative way. The topic of testing the reliability of complex technical objects is constantly developing in the literature. In this paper, it is assumed that the operation of wind farm equipment is described and modeled based on Markov processes. The adoption of this assumption justified the use of the Kolmogorov−Chapman equations to describe the de... [more]
Practical Grid-Based Spatial Estimation of Number of Electric Vehicles and Public Chargers for Country-Level Planning with Utilization of GIS Data
Pokpong Prakobkaew, Somporn Sirisumrannukul
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicle, Geographic Information System (GIS), grid-based spatial estimation, public charger, Voronoi diagram
This research proposes an approach to estimate the number of different types of electric vehicles for a vast area or an entire country, which can be divided into a large number of small areas such as a subdistrict scale. The estimation methodology extensively utilizes the vehicle registration data in conjunction with Thailand’s so-called EV30@30 campaign and GIS-based road infrastructure data. To facilitate the analysis, square grids are built to form cells representing the number of electric vehicles in any specific area of interest. This estimated number of electric vehicles is further analyzed to determine the energy consumption, calculate the recommended number of public chargers, and visualize an increase in the substation loads from those charging stations. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated using the whole area of Thailand, consisting of five regions with a total area of 513,120 km2. The results show that the trucks contribute the most energy consumption w... [more]

Keywords: flammability limits, ignition system, methane-oxygen combustion, vortex combustion chamber
The current work is devoted to studying combustion initiation inside the methane-oxygen torch igniter for a hybrid rocket motor. The ignition system can generate a wide range of power and oxidizer-to-fuel ratios. It has a self-cooled vortex combustion chamber with one fuel jet injector and one circumferential vortex oxidizer injector. The system adjusts the mass flow rates of the propellants through the control valves and organizes cooling of the wall and flame stabilization. Experimental analysis of the ignition limits was investigated on the laboratory test bench. The propellants’ pressure and mass-flow rates, combustion temperature, ignition delay, and spark frequency were controlled during the tests. The authors executed a series of tests with different propellants’ mass flow rates. As a result, the region of stable ignition was found as well as the regions of ignition failure or unreliable ignition. A previously validated numerical model was used to analyze the flow in the reliabl... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dual-active-bridge converter, minimum reactive power, phase shift modulation, series resonance, zero voltage switching (ZVS)
In order to meet the demands of the bidirectional transmission of electric vehicle charger power, a series-resonant dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter is investigated in this paper. Firstly, the active and reactive power and zero voltage switching (ZVS) conditions of the full-bridge arm under extended phase-shift modulation, dual phase-shift modulation and triple phase-shift modulation are analyzed. Secondly, with the minimum reactive power as the optimization objective, the extended phase shift (EPS) is finally selected as the modulation method after comparing the minimum reactive power under various modulation methods when the normalized value of active power is varied in the range of 0−1. By constructing the objective function and determining the constraints, an off-line reactive power−minimization control strategy is proposed to achieve the ZVS of the full-bridge arm and, finally, the feasibility of the proposed control strategy is verified by simulation and experiment.

Keywords: diketopyrrolopyrrole, direct arylation polymerization, fluorene, photophysical properties
A series of PFDPP copolymers based on fluorene (F) and diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) monomers were synthesized via direct arylation polycondensation using Fagnou conditions which involved palladium acetate as catalyst (a gradual catalyst addition of three different percentages were used), potassium carbonate as the base, and neodecanoic acid in N, N-dimethylacetamide. This synthesis provides a low cost compared with traditional methods of transition-metal-catalyzed polymerization. Among the different amounts of catalyst used in the present work, 12% was optimal because it gave the highest reaction yield (81.5%) and one of the highest molecular weights (Mn = 13.8 KDa). Copolymers’ chemical structures, molecular weight distributions, and optical and thermal properties were analyzed. The linear optical properties of PFDPP copolymers resulted very similarly independently to the catalyst amounts used in the synthesis of the PFDPP copolymers: two absorptions bands distinctive of donor−acceptor... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite impulse response, fractional phase-lead compensation, grid-tied inverter, low phase resolution, PIMR-type RC
Low switching frequency is usually used in high-power wind grid-tied inverter systems to reduce power loss caused by on−off switching activity. Proportional integral multi-resonant type repetitive control (PIMR-type RC) can track reference grid current signals and suppress harmonic signals of grid-tied inverter system. A low switching frequency will result in a low sampling rate of control system. However, integer-order phase-lead compensation will lead to a poor compensation accuracy of PIMR-type RC with a low sampling rate, leading to poor tracking and suppressing performance of PIMR-type RC, and even result in system instability. To solve these problems, a high-performance fractional-order phase-lead compensation PIMR-type RC (FO-PIMR-RC) scheme is proposed in this paper. Fractional-order phase-lead compensation is adopted to compensate accurately the phase lag caused by controlled plant and PIMR-type RC and approximately realized by a finite impulse response (FIR) filter. Keywords: Brassica napus L., energy efficiency ratio, energy gain, energy inputs, energy output, fertilization
A two-year field experiment was conducted in Poland to determine energy efficiency (EE) in the production of winter oilseed rape (WOR) in different fertilization: (i) zero-fertilization; (ii) 158 kg N ha−1, 45 kg P ha−1 and 145 kg K ha−1 as mineral fertilizer (NPK); (iii) 1.0 Mg ha−1 meat and bone meal (MBM), 79 kg N ha−1 and 145 kg K ha−1 as mineral fertilizer; (iv) 1.5 Mg ha−1 MBM, 40 kg N ha−1 and 145 kg K ha−1 as mineral fertilizer; and (v) 2.0 Mg ha−1 MBM and 145 kg K ha−1 as mineral fertilizer. The replacement of NPK with MBM decreased energy inputs in WOR production by 20−55%. The NPK had a greater (16−21%) effect on seed yield formation than MBM. The replacement of NPK with MBM decreased the energy output of seeds (14−21%) and total biomass (12−20). The replacement of NPK with MBM decreased (6−13%) the energy gain from seed production. The application of MBM improved the EE ratio in the production of seeds (10−81%) and total biomass (11−85%) relative to NPK. The EE ratio of WOR... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anoxic, denitrification, hydrogen peroxide, nitrification, soil aquifer treatment
Soil aquifer treatment (SAT), as a gravity-based wastewater reuse process, is limited by oxygen availability to the microbial community in the soil. Using oxygen from enzymatic degradation of H2O2 to generate hyper-oxygen conditions can exceed solubility limitations associated with aeration, but little is known about the effect of hyper-oxygen conditions on the microbial community and the dominant bio-reactions. This study examined the impact of H2O2 addition on the community structure and process performance, along with SAT depth. Overall, two soil columns were incrementally fed synthetic secondary effluents to simulate infiltration through SAT. The experimental column received 14 mg/L hydrogen peroxide to double the level of natural oxygen available. The microbial kinetics of nitrifiers and heterotrophs were evaluated. We found that all of the H2O2 was degraded within the top 10 cm of the column, accompanied by a higher removal of COD (23 ± 0.25%) and ammonia (31 ± 3%) in comparison... [more]

Keywords: aging characteristics, aging factors, degradation evaluation, output characteristics, PV module, test device
Generally, PV (photovoltaic) modules are known as devices which are used semi-permanently for more than 20 years, but the electrical performance and lifespan of PV modules can be significantly degraded due to various environmental factors. Thus, a proper evaluation method for aging phenomenon of PV modules is required. Although there already are methods which compare adjusted PV output power based on STC (standard test condition) with initial PV module specification, or perform direct comparison by conducting the test under STC, there are issues with objectivity or efficiency in the existing evaluation method of aging phenomenon due to the data distortion while adjusting measured data or difficulties in implementation. Therefore, in order to overcome the above-mentioned disadvantage of the existing evaluation method for deterioration in PV modules and evaluate the aging characteristics of PV modules based on on-site measurement data in an accurate and efficient manner, this paper imple... Keywords: 3D visualization, fuzzy ordered binary comparison method, grey correlation method, height of water-conducting fracture zone, multivariate nonlinear regression model, western Ordos Basin
The mining-induced water-conducting fracture zone (WCFZ) plays a critical role in roof water damage prevention and ecological protection. The measured heights of the WCFZ were collected from 52 working faces or boreholes in the Ordos Basin mining area. Four factors influencing the mining-induced height of the WCFZ, i.e., mining thickness, proportion coefficient of hard rock, working width, and mining depth, were analyzed. The optimal unitary function model of each factor and the height of the WCFZ were obtained through single-factor analysis. The grey correlation method and fuzzy ordered binary comparison method were used to determine the comprehensive weight, and the weighted improved multiple regression model was obtained by combination and iteration. The relative error of the model was basically controlled within 10%. Finally, taking the Qingshuiying Coalfield as an application case, we predicted the mining-induced height of the WCFZ by using the new prediction model. The spatial di... [more]

Keywords: cooling, COP, heat pump, refrigerant, two-evaporator, vapor–liquid separator
20 RT (70 kW) two-evaporator heat pump system was developed, manufactured, and tested to enhance the cooling performance using a vapor−liquid separator. In the proposed system, two evaporators are connected in series, and the refrigerant passing through the primary evaporator is separated into vapor and liquid using a vapor−liquid separator. The vapor refrigerant is passed to the compressor, whereas the liquid phase flows into the second evaporator. The amount of vapor refrigerant sent to the compressor can be adjusted through a needle valve opening (0%, 50%, and 100%). The influence of this parameter on the cooling performance was analyzed. The cooling performance tests were repeated five times to check repeatability. Data associated with the air and refrigerant sides were obtained, and the average coefficients of performance (COPs) were calculated. The average COP associated with the air side was approximately 5% lower than that pertaining to the refrigerant side owing to the heat lo... [more]

Keywords: all-vanadium photoelectrochemical cell, photoelectrochemical activity, physicochemical characteristics, solar energy storage, structure evolution
Solar energy storage in the form of chemical energy is considered a promising alternative for solar energy utilization. High-performance solar energy conversion and storage significantly rely on the sufficient active surface area and the efficient transport of both reactants and charge carriers. Herein, the structure evolution of titania nanotube photocatalyst during the photoanode fabrication and its effect on photoelectrochemical activity in a microfluidic all-vanadium photoelectrochemical cell was investigated. Experimental results have shown that there exist opposite variation trends for the pore structure and crystallinity of the photocatalyst. With the increase in calcination temperature, the active surface area and pore volume were gradually declined while the crystallinity was significantly improved. The trade-off between the gradually deteriorated sintering and optimized crystallinity of the photocatalyst then determined the photoelectrochemical reaction efficiency. The optima... [more]

Keywords: agricultural tractor, emission reduction, numerical analysis, pre-chamber, PSO algorithm
With the rapid development of agriculture in China today, the demand for agricultural machinery is rapidly increasing. A large amount of exhaust gas emissions poses a severe threat to the environment. To better promote engine fuel and air mixing, enhance engine performance, and achieve low emissions, we conducted a numerical study of the pre-chamber and nozzle design in a gasoline engine for an agricultural tractor by using the G-equation method in Converge CFD software. The relevant optimization of the three model parameters in the G-equation was performed using the improved particle swarm algorithm (PSO). The model parameters after optimization by the PSO algorithm were: a1=0.77, b1=2.0, b3=1.0. It was confirmed that the predicted engine performance was enhanced greatly with the pre-chamber system. More importantly, the results reveal that the volume and area ratios of the pre-chamber played a crucial role in the performance of the pre-chamber. Through a series of parametric studies... [more]

Keywords: carbon neutrality, DDPG, reinforcement learning
With the exponential growth of traffic demand, ultra-dense networks have been proposed to cope with such demand. However, the increase of the network density causes more power use, and carbon neutrality becomes an important concept to decrease the emission and production of carbon. In cellular networks, emission and production can be directly related to power consumption. In this paper, we aim to achieve carbon neutrality, as well as maximize network capacity with given power constraints. We assume that base stations have their own renewable energy sources to generate power. For carbon neutrality, we control the power consumption for base stations by adjusting the transmission power and switching off base stations to balance the generated power. Given such power constraints, our goal is to maximize the network capacity or the rate achievable for the users. To this end, we carefully design the objective function and then propose an efficient Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) alg... [more]
