Reduction in Selected Torque Harmonics in a Three-Level NPC Inverter-Fed Induction Motor Drive
Piotr Chudzik, Marcin Steczek, Karol Tatar
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: mechanical disturbance reduction, selective harmonic elimination, three-level NPC inverter
The reduction or elimination of selected torque and current harmonics is widely used in multilevel inverter fed induction motor drives. A wide range of methods are employed to achieve this goal. Those modes of operation allow the avoidance of certain torque and current harmonics that may lead to disturbance and even mechanical and electrical resonance. In this paper, the selective harmonic elimination technique (SHE-PWM) is employed to reduce the chosen torque harmonics in a three-level NPC inverter-fed induction motor drive. The proposed method is compared with the synchronized carrier pulse width modulation technique (SCPWM). For both schemes of control simulation, a model is proposed using Simulink software. Furthermore, laboratory stand experiments are carried out to verify the correctness of torque harmonics formation.

Keywords: biosurfactant, solid-state fermentation, sophorolipids, Technoeconomic Analysis, waste
Sophorolipids (SLs) are microbial biosurfactants with an important role in industry and a continuously growing market. This research addresses the use of sustainable resources as feedstock for bioproducts. Winterization oil cake (WOC) and molasses are suitable substrates for SLs via solid-state fermentation (SSF). The model proposed herein was established for annually processing 750 t of WOC and comparing three support materials: wheat straw (WS), rice husk (RH), and coconut fiber (CF). Production capacity ranged 325−414 t of SLs per year. Unit Production Cost was 5.1, 5.7, and 6.9 USD/kg SL for WS, RH, and CF production models, respectively, and was slightly lower with other substrates. Financial parameters were CAPEX 6.7 MM USD and OPEX 1.9 MM USD/y, with a NPV, IRR and payback time of 6.4 MM USD, 31% and 3.2 y, respectively. SLs recovery from the solid matrix was the major contributor to operating costs, while fermentation equipment shaped capital costs. Results show that the physic... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: earth coupled building, evaporative cooling, life cycle saving, potato storage, refrigerated preservation building
Preservation of potatoes in a controlled cool environment (i.e., in cold storage) consumes a substantial amount of energy. The specific energy consumption in Indian cold storage has been estimated to be between 9 and 26 kWh/ton/year. In this article, the potential for minimizing the energy consumption in the refrigeration process of cold storage through passive cooling concepts (i.e., roof evaporative cooling and the earth integration of the storage building) was explored. These passive concepts of cooling have shown significant potential for lowering the cooling loads and the energy consumption in different types of buildings. Therefore, a feasibility analysis for a potato storage building, considering the effect of the passive cooling concepts, was conducted for three different climatic conditions (i.e., hot−dry, warm−humid, and composite) in India. The energy saving potentials in the cold storage were assessed by quantifying the thermal energy exchange between the indoor and outdoor... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: analytical model, inner-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor, magnetic field, new energy vehicle
The motor is an important component that affects the output performance of new energy vehicles (using new energy sources such as electric energy and hydrogen fuel energy to drive the motor and provide kinetic energy). Motors with high power and low noise can effectively improve the dynamic performance, passability and smoothness of new energy vehicles and bring a comfortable experience to driver and passengers. The magnetic field analytical model of the inner-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is studied to improve its output quality. The motor is divided into four subdomains: the stator slot subdomain, the stator slot notch subdomain, the air-gap subdomain, and the permanent magnet (PM) subdomain. The general solution of the vector magnetic potential of each subdomain is solved, and the expression of magnetic flux density of each subdomain is derived. Meanwhile, the analytical model of the non-uniform air gap is established according to the uniform air-gap model. The m... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: architected materials, fast thermal response, high surface area, hollow microlattice, ultralight ceramic microlattices
Lightweight reactor materials that simultaneously possess low heat capacity and large surface area are desirable for various applications such as catalytic supports, heat exchangers, and biological scaffolds. However, they are challenging to satisfy this criterion originating from their structural property in most porous cellular solids. Microlattices have great potential to resolve this issue in directing transport phenomena because of their hierarchically ordered design and controllable geometrical features such as porosity, specific surface, and tortuosity. In this study, we report hollow ceramic microlattices comprising a 10 μm thick hollow nickel oxide beam in an octet-truss architecture with low heat capacity and high specific surface area. Our microarchitected reactors exhibited a low heat capacity for a rapid thermal response with a small Biot number (Bi << 1) and large intertwined surface area for homogeneous flow mixing and chemical reactions, which made them ideal cand... Keywords: circular economy, European green deal, industrial symbiosis, Sustainability, transformation
Circular economy is a tool based on the inclusion of environmental, social, and governance performance (ESG) in decision-making to achieve sustainable development goals (SDG). In recent years, it has become clear that business-as-usual has nothing to do with sustainability, and alternative business models, primarily on technological grounds, must be implemented to mitigate the damage caused by significant and unpredictable effects of climate change. The current situation requires unprecedented and urgent changes to policies and business development models. The current research aimed to target on industrial symbiosis as one of the business models of the circular economy. It evaluated the benefits of symbiosis and the fostering of cooperation between industries and, consequently, has a major impact on resource efficiency ratios. The research is based on quantitative and qualitative research methods, including a literature review, assessment, and application of the triangulation method. A... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Biomass, catalyst, electrostatic precipitator, emission factors, residential heating
Residential biomass combustion has been pointed out as one of the largest sources of atmospheric pollutants. Rising awareness of the environmental effects of residential biomass combustion emissions boosted the development of different emission reduction devices that are currently available on the market for small-scale appliances. However, detailed studies on the efficiency of these devices in different combustion systems available in Southern European countries are lacking. In this study, two pollution control devices (catalytic converter and electrostatic precipitator) were tested in two different combustion systems (batch mode operated woodstove and automatically fed pellet stove) in order to assess the emission reduction potential of the devices. Pine firewood was used to fuel the woodstove. One commercial brand of pellets and an agricultural fuel (olive pit) were taken for the experiments in the pellet stove. While the efficiency of the electrostatic precipitator in reducing PM10... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: economic dispatch, optimization of generation grids, reliability power grid
Sustainable, stable, and cost-optimized operation of power grids must be the main objectives of power grid operators and electric utilities. The energy transition towards a preponderant green energy economy requires innovative solutions to enhance the power grid economic dispatches looking for a better allocation of the energy demand among the diverse renewable and fossil fuel energy plants. Green renewable energy systems must be preferred over fossil fuel generators when they are available. However, fossil plants are still required to be kept operational due to the variability and uncertainty of renewable energy plants. This study proposes a hybrid rational economic dispatch model that combines a cost minimization linear model enhanced with a fuzzy logic system for decision-making on wind and hydropower minimum and maximum generation levels. The model considers the intermittency of wind energy and recognizes the strategic value of hydropower as energy storage. The results of the model... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: expansion planning, harmonics, Optimization, renewable energy source
Renewable energy sources (RES) are becoming more attractive due to the global demand for the utilization of clean energy and their easy accessibility. The integration of renewable energy technologies into power systems has been made easy, such that RES can be incorporated into small distribution systems or power grids. This integration of RES has negative impacts on power quality, system reliability, and network security. This could affect the RES performance and causes power quality-related problems such as harmonics, voltage flickers, swell, and sag. This paper presents a generation and transmission expansion planning model with the integration of large-scale RES considering harmonic emissions constraints. This method uses a weighted sum approach to combine the multi-objective optimization problems, thereby minimizing the total costs, active power loss, and harmonic power loss. An analytical technique was developed to estimate and quantify the harmonic emissions from the RES componen... [more]

Keywords: electric machine, Energy Efficiency, hydraulic equipment, induction motors, Modelling, Pumps, water pumps
Grid-powered pumping plants are widespread electromechanical systems commonly set in motion by electrical machines. The productivity of these electromechanical systems varies substantially according to the shift of the location of the working point on the H-Q plane, which is determined with the help of mutual positions of the characteristics of the pump unit itself and the hydraulic parameters of the pipeline. The topic of the proposed article is mainly focused on the investigation of pumping plant productivity equipped with two various types of electrical machines known as induction and synchronous reluctance motors. A simulation method of efficiency prediction of a centrifugal pumping plant for flow regulation is proposed. The described Simulink/Matlab simulation approach is quite valuable for validating efficiency in the case of pumping plants supplied with various types of electrical machines. The data relating to the electrical machines’ efficiency estimation were obtained during... [more]
A Simplified Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation Algorithm of a High-Speed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine Drive for a Flywheel Energy Storage System

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: FESS, high-speed PMSM, optimal vector dwell time, PMSM drive, SVPWM
A space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm is an important part of the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive to achieve direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) conversion. The execution of the conventional SVPWM algorithm is a complex process which will limit the sampling frequency of the high-speed PMSM drive. Low sampling frequency will cause high current total harmonic distortion (THD) and eddy current loss. To increase the sampling frequency, this paper proposes a novel simplified SVPWM algorithm. The proposed SVPWM algorithm turns the vector composition problem of the conventional SVPWM algorithm into an optimization problem of the dwell time of the basic vector. The proposed SVPWM algorithm has an optimal vector dwell time (OVDT). The dwell time of the basic vector can be directly calculated by solving the optimization problem. The proposed SVPWM algorithm does not need sector identification compared to the conventional algorithm. The experiments... [more]

Keywords: biomethanation, CO2 valorization, gas fermentation, hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, renewable energies
Nowadays, sustainable and renewable energy production is a global priority. Over the past decade, several Power-to-X (PtX) technologies have been proposed to store and convert the surplus of renewable energies into chemical bonds of chemicals produced by different processes. CO2 is a major contributor to climate change, yet it is also an undervalued source of carbon that could be recycled and represents an opportunity to generate renewable energy. In this context, PtX technologies would allow for CO2 valorization into renewable fuels while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. With this work we want to provide an up-to-date overview of biomethanation as a PtX technology by considering the biological aspects and the main parameters affecting its application and scalability at an industrial level. Particular attention will be paid to the concept of CO2-streams valorization and to the integration of the process with renewable energies. Aspects related to new promising technologies such... A Day-Ahead Energy Management for Multi MicroGrid System to Optimize the Energy Storage Charge and Grid Dependency—A Comparative Analysis
Saqib Iqbal, Kamyar Mehran
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bidirectional power flow, energy storage system, heuristic, main grid, microgrid, neighborhood sharing, neighboring, Optimization, Solar Photovoltaic
Microgrid (MG) is a combination of distributed generators (DGs), energy storage systems (ESSs), and loads connected to distribution network that can either be in islanded mode or grid-tied mode. Similarly, a multi-microgrid (MMG) system is a number of interconnected MGs connected with a larger and complex distribution network. Recently, the MMG energy management has created new challenges due to the inherent intermittency, uncertainty, and probabilistic nature of renewable based DGs output and varying load demands. To ensure the efficient operation and optimal energy management in the MMGs, this work proposes a two-stage, a day-ahead, simultaneous energy management strategy (EMS) of the MMG system as well as the MG system. At the first stage, each MG assumes a day-ahead predicted load demand and DGs output. At the second stage, through EMS, the energy scheduling, minimization of the main grid dependency, and maximization of the stored energy in the ESS are managed simultaneously. Four... [more]
Design and Evaluation of a Laminated Three-Phase Rotary Transformer for DFIG Applications
Stefan Botha, Nkosinathi Gule
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), magnetic equivalent circuit, rotary transformer
In doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs), the rotor is excited through slip-ring and brush assemblies. These slip-ring and brush assemblies often require frequent routine maintenance, which affects the reliability of the DFIG. Alternatively, a contact-less energy transfer system, such as a rotary transformer, can be utilized in place of the slip rings. In DFIGs, the rotor frequency is very low, under 5 Hz, and this can lead to a huge rotary transformer since the transformer size is inversely proportional to its operating frequency. However, in a rotor-tied DFIG, whereby the rotor is connected directly to the grid whilst the stator is connected to a back-to-back converter, the rotor frequency becomes the grid frequency and can lead to a reasonably sized rotary transformer. In this paper, the design methodology of a three-phase rotary transformer that can be used in rotor-tied DFIG applications is proposed. The rotary transformer is coupled to the power windings of the rotor-tied DFIG... [more]

Keywords: chalk and fine-grained rocks, electron microscopy, enhanced oil recovery, ion microscopy, petroleum geosciences, Raman spectroscopy, reservoir characterization, rock-fluid chemical interactions
Analyses of fine-grained rocks like shales, cherts, and specifically chalk are challenging with regards to spatial resolution. We propose a “toolbox” to understand mineralogical alteration in chalk, especially those induced by non-equilibrium fluids or polymers and silicates during production of hydrocarbons. These data are fundamental in experiments related to improved/enhanced oil recovery (IOR/EOR) research with the aim to increase hydrocarbon production in a sustainable and environmentally friendly process. The ‘toolbox’ methods analyse rock−fluid or polymer−rock interaction and can be applied to any fine-grained rock type. In our ‘toolbox’, we include methods for routine analysis and evaluate the economic side of the usage together with the complexity of application and the velocity of data acquisition. These methods are routine methods for identification and imaging of components at the same time by chemical or crystallographic means and here applied to petroleum geology. The ‘to... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current limiting, impedance model, LVDC protection, power converters, stability analysis
Low-voltage dc distribution offers high efficiency for grid integration of dc-based technologies such as photovoltaic and battery storage systems and new loads such as charging stations for electric vehicles due to reduced number of conversion stages. However, the selection of protection devices, protection coordination and selectivity is still subject to research. This work proposes to use a two-layer protection technique utilizing the control capability of power converters in case of a short-circuit fault at branch level of a low voltage dc feeder. The first layer is limiting the bus current using a virtual resistance in the droop control to avoid tripping of the grid-forming converter. The second layer implements a soft fuse tripping technique for selectivity. The control concept is presented and the system stability is analyzed using impedance-based stability analysis. Experimental results on a hardware-in-the-loop setup verify the findings.

Keywords: deep shales, Longmaxi Formation, Luzhou Block, nanopore structures, pore water
In the Luzhou Block of the southern Sichuan Basin, the deep Longmaxi shales have become important exploration targets in recent years. However, the water-bearing properties of these shales are still unclear, which significantly limits evaluations of reservoir pore structures and gas-in-place (GIP) contents. In this study, twelve fresh shale core samples were collected at the well site, and the pore water (CPW) and equilibrium water (CEW) contents, as well as the pore structures of the shales, were analyzed under both as-received and dried conditions. The results indicate that the deep shales have low water-bearing extents with a pore water content (CPW) of 3.82−16.67 mg/g, and that both the organic matter (OM) and inorganic matter (IM) pores can be used for pore water storage. The extent of influence of pore water on nonmicropores and IM pore structures is more significant than that on micropores and OM pore structures. Meanwhile, the pore water obviously reduces the retention effects... [more]

Keywords: heat sink, hybrid concentrating photovoltaic/thermal system CPVT, multi-junction photovoltaic, point focus Fresnel lens
Climate change is one of the biggest environmental, political, economic, technological, and social challenges of the 21st century. Due to ever-increasing fossil fuels costs. The world energy system should be transitioned to renewable energy sources to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. Solar energy is one of the suitable alternatives to fossil fuel usage. Currently, the most widely available solar technologies are solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal. The integration of these two techniques enables the exploitation of the most significant amount of solar radiation. This combination has led to a hybrid photovoltaic/thermal system (PV/T). Concentrated solar radiation on PV cells, known as concentrated photovoltaic (CPV), effectively decreases PV receivers’ area and harnesses the same quantity of solar radiation. However, the main problem with CPV is the elevated PV surface temperature, which often requires active cooling. This issue can be solved by introducing a Concentrating Photo... [more]
