Hybrid MLI Topology Using Open-End Windings for Active Power Filter Applications
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: active power filter, cascaded two-level VSI, hybrid MLI, multilevel inverter
Different multilevel converter topologies have been presented for achieving more output voltage steps, hence improving system performance and lowering costs. In this paper, a hybrid multilevel inverter (MLI) topology is proposed for active-power-filter applications. The proposed MLI is a combination of two standard topologies: the cascaded H-bridge and the three-phase cascaded voltage source inverter. This configuration enhances the voltage levels of the proposed MLI while using fewer switches than typical MLI topologies. The proposed MLI was developed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and a closed-loop control technique was used to achieve a unity power factor connection of the PV modules to the grid, as well as to compensate for harmonics caused by nonlinear loads. To demonstrate that the configuration was working correctly and that the control was precise, the proposed MLI was constructed in a laboratory. A MicroLabBox real-time controller handled data acquisition and switch gatin... [more]

Gaussian Decline Curve Analysis of Hydraulically Fractured Wells in Shale Plays: Examples from HFTS-1 (Hydraulic Fracture Test Site-1, Midland Basin, West Texas)
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: child wells, Gaussian decline curves, Gaussian method, HFTS-1, hydraulic diffusivity, parent wells, pressure interference, pressure-transient solutions
The present study shows how new Gaussian solutions of the pressure diffusion equation can be applied to model the pressure depletion of reservoirs produced with hydraulically multi-fractured well systems. Three practical application modes are discussed: (1) Gaussian decline curve analysis (DCA), (2) Gaussian pressure-transient analysis (PTA) and (3) Gaussian reservoir models (GRMs). The Gaussian DCA is a new history matching tool for production forecasting, which uses only one matching parameter and therefore is more practical than hyperbolic DCA methods. The Gaussian DCA was compared with the traditional Arps DCA through production analysis of 11 wells in the Wolfcamp Formation at Hydraulic Fracture Test Site-1 (HFTS-1). The hydraulic diffusivity of the reservoir region drained by the well system can be accurately estimated based on Gaussian DCA matches. Next, Gaussian PTA was used to infer the variation in effective fracture half-length of the hydraulic fractures in the HFTS-1 wells.... [more]

Literature Review of Energy Management in Combined Heat and Power Systems Based on High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells for Residential Comfort Applications
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined heat and power, energy management, Fuel Cells
Combined heat and power technologies represent an efficient way to ensure energy efficiency, as they promote usage of both electrical and thermal energy, something not done by most traditional energy sources, especially in residential environments. In this context, high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells allow the implementation of combined heat and power systems. Additionally, in this environment, fuel cells are more efficient and less polluting than their traditional counterparts. We present a literature review of energy management in residential systems based on this type of fuel cell. In addition, we classify and detail the current state of fuel cell technologies, paying special attention to their characteristics, mathematical modelling and control, as well as combined heat and power systems and energy management strategies.

Perceived Barriers to Nearly Zero-Energy Housing: Empirical Evidence from Kilkenny, Ireland
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: barriers, housing professionals, nearly zero-energy housing, NZEB, perceptions, sustainability transition
In 2010, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive announced that all new buildings are to be nearly zero-energy as of January 2021. Having reached year 2022, it can be said that the transition has proven to be slower than anticipated. Transition research has long acknowledged the potential impact of the human factor in the process of change. While there is a relative wealth of literature on end-users and their perceptions as recipients of change within the demand end of the market, research on professionals and their perceptions as actors in the process of change is limited. Thus, this study looks at the human factor in the supply end of the market by bringing professionals’ perceptions to the forefront in its investigation of barriers to the implementation and uptake of nearly zero-energy housing in practice. As part of the project entitled Housing 4.0 Energy: Affordable and Sustainable Housing through Digitization, data were collected through a focus group and semi-structured in... [more]

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: heat of fusion, kinetic of crystallization, microparticle size, operating parameters, polymer blends, supercritical fluids, supercritical SEDS
In this paper, we present the results of dispersion of thermodynamically immiscible polypropylene (PP) and ethylene-propylene triple synthetic rubber (EPTSR) polymer blends using the Solution-Enhanced Dispersion by Supercritical Fluid (SEDS) technique at operation conditions in the pressure range of (8 to 25) MPa and at temperatures t = 40 °C and 60 °C. The kinetics of crystallization and phase transformation in polymer blends obtained by conventional method (melt blending) and by mixing in the SEDS process have been studied using the DSC technique. The effects of the SEDS operation process on the physical—chemical (melting temperature, heat of fusion) and mechanical (microparticle size) characteristics of the SEDS-produced polymer blends were studied.

Design and Assessment of a LIDAR-Based Model Predictive Wind Turbine Control
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: LIDAR wind information, model predictive control (MPC), wind turbine control
The development of the Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology has enabled wider options for wind turbine control, in particular regarding disturbance rejection. The LIDAR measurements provide a spatial, preview wind information, based on which the controller has a better chance to cope with the wind disturbance before it affects the turbine operation. In this paper, a model predictive controller for above-rated wind turbine control was developed with the use of pseudo-LIDAR wind measurements data. A predictive control algorithm was developed based on a linearised wind turbine model, in which the disturbance from the incoming wind was computed by the LIDAR simulator. The optimal control action was applied to the nonlinear turbine model. The developed controller was compared with the baseline control and a previously developed LIDAR-assisted control combining a feedback-and-feedforward design. Our simulation studies on a 5 MW nonlinear wind turbine model, under different wind con... [more]

Simulation and Study of DC Corona Discharge Characteristics of Bar-Plate Gap
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air, bar-plate gap, DC negative corona, discharge morphology, heavy particles distribution, plasma model
In this paper, the corona discharge process of the bar-plate gap at −1 kV DC voltage is simulated using a two-dimensional axisymmetric plasma module. We analyze the variation of air negative corona discharge current, and the distribution morphology of microparticles in different discharge stages in detail. The significance of plasma chemical reactions at some typical time and the distribution characteristics of heavy particles are investigated according to reaction rates. Results show that, in the current rising stage, the collision ionization reactions (e.g., R1 and R2) and electron adsorption reaction (e.g., R3) play a major role, which lead to the increase in charged particles and the formation of an electron avalanche. In the current drop stage, all reaction rates decreased, except for collision ionization and electron attachment, partial charge transfer reactions (e.g., R8, R10, R11, and R14), and composite reactions (e.g., R16, R17, and R18), which come into play and gradually re... Machine Learning Methods to Forecast the Concentration of PM10 in Lublin, Poland
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air pollution, air quality modeling, ANN, PM10 forecasting
Air pollution has a major impact on human health, especially in cities, and elevated concentrations of PMx are responsible for a large number of premature deaths each year. Therefore, the amount of PM10 in the air is monitored and forecasts are made to predict the air quality. In Poland, mainly deterministic models are used to predict air pollution. Accordingly, research efforts are being made to develop other models to forecast the ambient PM10 levels. The aim of the study was to compare the machine learning models for predicting PM10 levels in the air in the city of Lublin. The following machine learning models were used: Linear regression (LR), K-Nearest Neighbors Regression (KNNR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Regression Trees (RT), Gaussian Process Regression Models (GPR), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM). The collected data for three consecutive years (January 2017 to December 2019) were used to develop the models. In total, 19 parameters... [more]

Model Predictive Control for Photovoltaic Plants with Non-Ideal Energy Storage Using Mixed Integer Linear Programming
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: battery energy storage system, MILP, MPC, photovoltaic systems
This paper proposes a model-based predictive control strategy based on mixed-integer linear programming for a photovoltaic power plant with battery energy storage. The control objective is to maximize the revenues from energy delivered from both photovoltaic panels and batteries to the grid in a deregulated electricity market. For each control interval, the proposed algorithm incorporates information on solar radiation, market prices, and the state of charge of the batteries to determine the intervals of energy injection into the grid to maximize the economic benefits. The proposed strategy considers the rate-based variable efficiency in the battery model and time-varying energies prices, thus providing a more general implementation than previous schemes proposed in the literature for the same purpose. Simulations considering the operational procedures of the Spanish market as a case study show that, by integrating the battery efficiency in the model, the proposed control strategy incr... [more]

Implementation and Verification of Effectiveness of Bulk Emulsion Explosive with Improved Energetic Parameters in an Underground Mine Environment
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: blasting, detonation velocity, explosives, underground mining
Explosives are commonly used in the mining industry to extract minerals from hard rock deposits. Therefore, an efficient explosive should ensure that the appropriate blast outcome is achieved, taking into account the desired rock-breaking parameters and the costs of drilling and blasting works. Depending on the type of deposit and follow-up processes, a proper blast result may be characterized by fragmentation, muckpile shape, overbreaks, etc. Industry has struggled to respond to the demand for bulk emulsion explosives with improved energetic parameters, having so far been unable to do so safely, effectively, and cost-efficiently. Methods of improving blasting parameters mainly rely on introducing a variety of additives to the emulsion explosive formulation during production, which creates additional hazards at that stage. Alternative, safe methods of achieving an improved energetic performance of emulsion explosives are, therefore, highly desirable. This paper is focused on one such p... [more]

CFD Simulation of Co-Planar Multi-Rotor Wind Turbine Aerodynamic Performance Based on ALM Method
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aerodynamic performance, CFD numerical simulation, co-planar, multi-rotor wind turbine, near-wake flow
Considering requirements such as enhanced unit capacity, the geometric size of wind turbine blades has been increasing; this, in turn, results in a rapid increase in manufacturing costs. To this end, in this paper, we examine the aerodynamics of co-planar multi-rotor wind turbines to achieve higher unit capacity at a lower blade length. The multiple wind rotors are in the same plane with no overlaps. The ALM-LES method is used to investigate the interaction effect of the blade tip vortices, by revealing the regulation of aerodynamic performance and flow field characteristics of the multi-rotor wind turbines. The simulated results suggest an observable reduction in the blade tip vortices generated by blades located closely together, due to the breaking and absorption of the blade tip vortices by the two rotors. This results in increased aerodynamic performance and loads on the multi-rotor wind turbine. The influence between the blade tip vortex is mainly located in the range of 0.2 R fr... [more]

Harmonic Compensation via Grid-Tied Three-Phase Inverter with Variable Structure I&I Observer-Based Control Scheme
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-tied inverters, harmonic distortion, sliding mode control
The power inverter topologies are indispensable devices to incorporate distributed generation schemes, like photovoltaic energy sources into the AC main. The nonlinear behavior of the power inverter draws a challenge when it comes to their control policy, rendering linear control methods often inadequate for the application. The control complexity can be further increased by the LCL filters, which are the preferred way to mitigate the current ripple caused by the inverter switching. This paper presents a robust variable structure control for a three-phase grid-tied inverter with an LCL filter. As well to the benefits of the sliding mode control (SMC), which is one of the control methods applied by power converters founded in literature, the proposed control scheme features a novel partial state observer based on the immersion and invariance technique, which thanks to its inherent robustness and speed of convergence is adequate for this application. This observer eliminates the need for... [more]

3D Modeling of Fracture-Cave Reservoir from a Strike-Slip Fault-Controlled Carbonate Oilfield in Northwestern China
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 3D reservoir modeling, fracture-cave reservoir, strike-slip fault, tensor-thickness attribute, thin-likelihood attribute, ultra-depth oilfield
A giant strike-slip fault-controlled Fuman Oilfield has been found in the Ordovician fractured carbonates of the Tarim Basin. However, conventional seismic methods are hardly able to distinguish the fractured reservoir and its connectivity in the ultra-depth (>7000 m) carbonate fault zones. We propose thin-likelihood and tensor-thickness process methods to describe the fracture network and large cave reservoir, respectively. Together with the two methods for 3D visualization of fracture-cave reservoirs, we had an application in the ultra-deep well deployment in Fuman Oilfield. The results show that the fracture network and cave reservoir can be 3D-imaged more clearly than conventional methods. The fracture network and cave reservoir show distinct segmentation by the fault assemblage in Fuman Oilfield. Furthermore, 3D modeling is favorable for the reservoir connectivity description along the carbonate fault zones. There are three distinct reservoir models: fault core-, fault damage zone... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: integration, oil refining, petrochemistry, power systems
This perspective describes different schemes of power systems integration for various process technology in oil refining and petrochemistry with a focus on distillation. An overview is given of different methods of gas turbines and turboexpanders. Application of the organic Rankine cycle is considered for distillation processes, especially for unconventional schemes, which are integrated into the main process as stand-alone ones, as well when the working fluid of an energy system is a process stream per se. Despite a more complex structure and potential interference with the main process, such schemes are advantageous in terms of more efficient equipment utilization. Integration of turboexpanders in separation processes and in reactor units can improve energy generation efficiency 2−3 fold compared with traditional schemes of energy generation from fossil feedstock. From the economic viewpoint for distillation columns, total annual costs can be decreased by ca. 5−15% with the specific... [more]
