Hotel Adapted to the Requirements of an nZEB Building—Thermal Energy Performance and Assessment of Energy Retrofit Plan
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: building energy modeling, combined cooling heating and power (CCHP), energy consumption, energy retrofit, nearly zero-energy building
Recently, emissions and the energy use of the building and construction sector globally increased. Therefore, energy retrofit processes and reducing the energy consumption of buildings are increasingly often discussed by the academic community, industry, and end-users. The application of high-performance technologies and highly insulating materials results in a low energy demand in newly constructed buildings. A crucial challenge is to reduce energy consumption in existing buildings. The article presents an energy analysis of the reconstruction of a historic building adapted to hotel functionality. Based on the available information on the design of the facility, and the annual demand for cooling and heating energy, simulations of the energy performance were carried out. The proposals to exchange the heat source and replace the existing systems were simulated and assessed. Three different retrofit options were analyzed, including the replacement of the air handling unit (variant 1—v1),... [more]

Design, Implementation, and Evaluation of an Output Prediction Model of the 10 MW Floating Offshore Wind Turbine for a Digital Twin
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twin, hybrid analysis and modeling, offshore wind turbine, reduce order model
Predicting the output power of wind generators is essential to improve grid flexibility, which is vulnerable to power supply variability and uncertainty. Digital twins can help predict the output of a wind turbine using a variety of environmental data generated by real-world systems. This paper dealt with the development of a physics-based output prediction model (P-bOPM) for a 10 MW floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) for a digital twin. The wind power generator dealt with in this paper was modeled considering the NREL 5 MW standard wind turbine with a semi-submersible structure. A P-bOPM of a 10 MW FOWT for a digital twin was designed and simulated using ANSYS Twin Builder. By connecting the P-bOPM developed for the digital twin implementation with an external sensor through TCP/IP communication, it was possible to calculate the output of the wind turbine using real-time field data. As a result of evaluating the P-bOPM for various marine environments, it showed good accuracy. The d... [more]

Effect of Tip Clearance on the Cavitation Flow in a Shunt Blade Inducer
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: cavitation, external characteristics experiment, numerical calculation, shunt blade inducer, tip clearance
In order to study the effect of tip clearance on the internal cavitation stability of a shunt blade inducer, an external characteristics experiment of a centrifugal pump with a shunt blade inducer was carried out. Based on the turbulence model and mixture model, the cavitating flow in a centrifugal pump with the inducer was numerically simulated. The influence of tip clearance on the cavitating flow in a shunt inducer was studied and analyzed. Through the research, it was found that tip clearance has a certain influence on the critical cavitation coefficient. The existence of the tip clearance caused a significant leakage vortex near the inducer’s inlet and a strong transient effect was shown. The location and degree of cavitation caused by the tip leakage are clarified in this paper. Tip clearance has a great impact on the pressure distribution on a shunt blade inducer. The influence law of tip clearance on an inducer’s blade load distribution was clarified. The results showed that ti... [more]

Keywords: attitude functions, in vivo microrobot, receiving coil, wireless power transmission
Approaches to studying electromagnetic induction in weak coupling have recently received attention in robotics since they could be used to supply energy to robots, allowing robots to diagnose and treat diseases in the human body. A three-dimensional orthogonal receiving coil connected in parallel, with a size of 13 mm × 13 mm × 13 mm, for an intestinal examination microrobot is designed in this article. Based on the defined attitude functions, we build and verify the stability and effectiveness of the proposed coil model through both analytical calculation and simulation analysis. In addition, to supply enough power to the microrobot, the number of turns of the receiving coil is optimized, considering both the electrical coil parameters and the limited space inside the robot. Then, an evaluation of the proposed 3D orthogonal receiving coil is presented in the bench tests. The results show that the power transmission efficiency can reach as high as 9.6%, with 1271 mW. Influence of the Gas Model on the Performance and Flow Field Prediction of a Gas−Liquid Two-Phase Hydraulic Turbine
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas volume fraction, gas–liquid two-phase, hydraulic turbine, numerical simulation
A two-phase hydraulic turbine’s performance and flow field were predicted under different Inlet Gas Volume Fractions (IGVF) with incompressible and compressible models, respectively. The calculation equation of equivalent head, hydraulic efficiency, and flow loss considering the expanding work of compressible gas were deduced based on the energy conservation equations. Then, the incompressible and compressible results, including the output power and flow fields, are compared and analyzed. The compressible gas model’s equivalent head, output power, and flow loss are higher than the incompressible model, but the hydraulic efficiency is lower. As the IGVF increases, the gas gradually diffuses from the blade’s working surface to its suction surface. The gas−liquid separation happens at the runner outlet in the compressible results due to the gas expansion. The area of the low-pressure zone in the incompressible results increases with the IGVF. However, it decreases with the IGVF in the com... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: CIGS, efficient multi-junction solar cell, perovskites, SCAPS-1D, zinc oxide (ZnO)
Tandem solar cells have a superb potential to push the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of photovoltaic technologies. They can be also more stable and economical. In this simulation work, an efficient perovskite solar cell (PSC) with Spiro-OMeTAD as a hole transport material (HTM) and with no electron transport material (ETM) to replace the traditional PSC structure is presented. This PSC is then used as a top sub cell together with a copper indium gallium sulfide (CIGS) bottom sub cell to build a tandem cell. The multi-junction solar cell behavior is improved by engineering the technological and physical parameters of the perovskite and HTM. The results show that an n-p heterojunction PSC structure with an ETM free could be a good candidate for the traditional n-i-p structure. Because of such investigations, the performance of the proposed ETM-free PSC/CIGS cell could be designed to reach a PCE as high as 35.36%.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: discrete-continuous hybrid action space, hybrid deep reinforcement learning (HDRL), more electric aircraft, real-time energy management
The increasing number and functional complexity of power electronics in more electric aircraft (MEA) power systems have led to a high degree of complexity in modelling and computation, making real-time energy management a formidable challenge, and the discrete-continuous action space of the MEA system under consideration also poses a challenge to existing DRL algorithms. Therefore, this paper proposes an optimisation strategy for real-time energy management based on hybrid deep reinforcement learning (HDRL). An energy management model of the MEA power system is constructed for the analysis of generators, buses, loads and energy storage system (ESS) characteristics, and the problem is described as a multi-objective optimisation problem with integer and continuous variables. The problem is solved by combining a duelling double deep Q network (D3QN) algorithm with a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm, where the D3QN algorithm deals with the discrete action space and the D... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: image processing, insulation pressboard, SEM image, thermal aging
The insulation pressboard is very important in the insulation of oil-immersed transformers, which determines the useful life of the transformer. In order to analyze the change in the micro topography of the pressboard under the condition of thermal aging in detail, the insulation pressboard samples of different thermal aging periods were made. Image enhancement, denoising, segmentation, optimization, edge detection, expansion, and corrosion were used to process SEM images of the pressboard after thermal aging, so as to extract the fiber width, hole size, and surface roughness. By comparing the relationship between the micro topography and the degree of polymerization of the insulation pressboard in different thermal aging periods, it can be concluded that when the fiber width was 91% of the unaged pressboard fiber width, and the corresponding roughness was 0.162, the insulation life was only approximately half of its original value, and when the fiber width was 79% of that of the unage... Keywords: control mechanism, grid-connected multi-level inverter (GCMLI), modulation techniques, renewable energy systems, topologies
Multi-level inverters (MLIs) have been widely used in recent years due to their various advantages in industrial and grid-connected applications. Traditional MLI topologies are being hampered by the rapid surge of renewable energy systems (RES) as a result of performance difficulties such as poor power reliability, an economically unviable structure, and a lack of efficiency. These difficulties are due to the traditional MLI topologies’ inability to keep up with the increasing demand for RES. Because of concerns about performance and limitations posed by classic MLI topologies, researchers have found themselves driven to the idea of building innovative hybrid MLI topologies. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of multilevel inverter systems that are wired into the main power supply. Grid-connected inverter types and their configurations are discussed in depth in this review. Diverse multi-level inverter topologies, as well as the different approaches, are divided into various... An Improved Sliding Mode Control Method to Increase the Speed Stability of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: permanent magnet synchronous motor, saturation function, SMC, speed control, torque control
A permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) plays an important role in the operation performance of an electric vehicle. In order to increase the speed stability of PMSMs, an improved sliding mode control (SMC) method is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the control process of a PMSM is divided into parts, which are the torque closed-loop control and speed closed-loop control. Secondly, an integrated control method with proportional integral (PI) and inverter switching frequency is adopted in order to increase the torque performance of the PMSM. Lastly, compared with the traditional SMC method, an improved SMC method with saturation function is proposed in order to decrease the speed fluctuation of the PMSM from 7.7% to 5.9%, thereby increasing the speed stability of the PMSM. The results of the experimental test indicate that both the speed stability and starting performance of the PMSM are increased by the improved SMC method.

Hybrid Propulsion in SI Engines for New Generation Motorcycles: A Numerical-Experimental Approach to Assess Power Requirements and Emission Performance
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon monoxide, hybrid propulsion, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, SI engines, unburned hydrocarbons
Worldwide mopeds and motorcycles are taking on a growing main role in private mobility with a direct impact on air pollution, particularly in urban contexts of many Asian and European countries. In a preceding experimental investigation, HC and CO emissions were measured in the exhaust of a last-generation motorcycle belonging to the Euro-3 legislative category. Since exhaust emissions and fuel consumption are very sensitive to variations in vehicles instantaneous speed and acceleration, in this research new experimental results are used to recognize the kinematic parameters that cause higher engine-out emissions. In this paper, the hybrid electric propulsion is proposed for motorcycle application to reduce exhaust emissions in particular driving conditions which include high levels of acceleration with resultant rapid steep increase in engine speed. In such operating conditions, an enrichment of the air/fuel mixture is required, which affects the catalyst conversion efficiency. Subseq... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Kaplan turbine model, plunging mode, rotating mode, rotating vortex rope, structural dynamic response
The rotating vortex rope, which can be decomposed in the rotating and the plunging modes, is the origin of pressure fluctuations in the draft tube cone when hydraulic turbines operate at part load, compromising the structural integrity and limiting the output load. A measurement campaign was carried out in a Kaplan turbine model which is a replica of the experimental 10 MW Porjus U9 prototype machine along a propeller curve to study the rotating vortex rope’s excitation levels and the induced structural responses. A complete set of sensors mounted on-board and off-board was used to measure pressures, forces, torques, accelerations, displacements, and strains. The characteristic frequencies and amplitudes of the pressure fluctuations and of the corresponding induced loads and vibrations associated with the two modes were quantified in a wide range of operating conditions at part load. February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: IFOPDT model, integrating process, level control, thermal powerplant steam separator, tuning PD/PID
The paper presents an analysis of water-level control in a thermal power plant (TPP) steam separator. This control structure is vital for the entire plant’s stable, reliable, and efficient operation. This process belongs to processes with an integrator because it concerns a level-control issue, and the control variable is the feedwater flow. Said industrial processes are challenging to control and apply standard methods for tuning the PID controller, so a new procedure has been proposed. A procedure for tuning a PID controller for integrating processes is proposed based on the IFOPDT model, obtained from the wide step response of the process. Based on the process parameters estimated, the tuning of the controller is proposed. Results from the TPP TEKO-B2 (350 MW) are presented as an experimental verification. Compared with standard tuning methods, better results are achieved in the form of rise time and disturbance elimination rate. A significantly less risky and faster experiment for... [more]

Operating Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage Systems in Wind Farms for Smooth Power Injection: A Penalty Fees Aware Model Predictive Control
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hydrogen-based energy storage systems, mixed-logic dynamic modeling, Model Predictive Control, optimal operations, power smoothing, wind farms
Smooth power injection is one of the possible services that modern wind farms could provide in the not-so-far future, for which energy storage is required. Indeed, this is one among the three possible operations identified by the International Energy Agency (IEA)-Hydrogen Implementing Agreement (HIA) within the Task 24 final report, that may promote their integration into the main grid, in particular when paired to hydrogen-based energy storages. In general, energy storage can mitigate the inherent unpredictability of wind generation, providing that they are deployed with appropriate control algorithms. On the contrary, in the case of no storage, wind farm operations would be strongly affected, as well as their economic performances since the penalty fees wind farm owners/operators incur in case of mismatches between the contracted power and that actually delivered. In underground mining, new workings (tunnels) are constructed by blasting or mechanical excavation. The blasting technique used in underground mines is supported by economic aspects, especially for deposits characterized by hard rocks. Unfortunately, the quality of the result may be different than expected in terms of the general geometry of work or the roughness of excavation surfaces. The blasting technique is also a source of vibrations that may affect other existing structures, affecting their stability. Therefore, it is of great importance to monitor both the quality of the new tunnels and changes in existing tunnels that may cause rockfall from the sidewalls and ceilings of both new and existing tunnels. The length of mining tunnels and support structures in underground mines is massive. Even if one would like to limit monitoring of tunnel geometry to those used every day for major technological processes such as transport, it is a vast amount of work. What is more, any stationar...
