February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, Biomass, conversion, industrial waste, pyrolysis
The production of biochar from biomass and industrial wastes provides both environmental and economic sustainability. An effective way to ensure the sustainability of biochar is to produce high value-added activated carbon. The desirable characteristic of activated carbon is its high surface area for efficient adsorption of contaminants. Feedstocks can include a number of locally available materials with little or negative value, such as orchard slash and crop residue. In this context, it is necessary to determine and know the conversion effects of the feedstocks to be used in the production of activated carbon. In the study conducted for this purpose; several samples (piñon wood, pecan wood, hardwood, dried grass, Wyoming coal dust, Illinois coal dust, Missouri coal dust, and tire residue) of biomass and industrial waste products were investigated for their conversion into activated carbon. Small samples (approximately 0.02 g) of the feedstocks were pyrolyzed under inert or mildly oxi... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy crisis, energy sector, energy security, financial analysis
We have been observing large fluctuations and price increases in electricity markets in recent years. The COVID-19 pandemic, rising energy costs, political instability and increasing demand for electricity have been the factors intensifying the problems. This causes uncertainty related to maintaining energy security. Energy security is an element of the national security system. In this context, the question arises whether Polish energy companies are able to adapt to the growing demand for electricity while meeting the growing environmental requirements. Moreover, it remains to be seen how the current energy crisis will affect the financial condition of energy companies in Poland and whether companies from the energy sector will benefit from this crisis. Another issue is the impact of the current crisis on the sense of energy security of consumers. There are many factors affecting energy security. This study focuses on economic and financial factors. The article aims to assess the ener... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural networks, forecasting models, hyperparameter tuning, renewable energy potential, weather parameter forecasting
The major challenge facing renewable energy systems in Nigeria is the lack of appropriate, affordable, and available meteorological stations that can accurately provide present and future trends in weather data and solar PV performance. It is crucial to find a solution to this because information on present and future solar PV performance is important to renewable energy investors so that they can assess the potential of renewable energy systems in various locations across the country. Although Nigerian weather provides favorable weather conditions for clean power generation, there is little penetration of renewable energy systems in the region, since over 95% of the power is fossil-fuel-generated. This is because there has been no detailed report showing the potential of clean power generation systems due to the dysfunctional meteorological stations in the country. This paper sought to fill this knowledge gap by providing a machine-learning-inspired forecasting of environmental weathe... [more]

A Fully Coupled Hydro-Mechanical Approach for Multi-Fracture Propagation Simulations
Yinghao Deng, Di Wang, Yan Jin, Yang Xia
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture propagation, fully coupled, hydro-mechanical, production, stress interference
Hydraulic fracturing is a complex nonlinear hydro-mechanical coupled process. Accurate numerical simulation is of great significance for reducing fracturing costs and improving reservoir development benefits. The aim of this paper is to propose an efficient numerical simulation method for the fracturing-to-production problem under a unified framework that has good convergence and accuracy. A hydro-mechanical coupled fracturing model (HMFM) is established for poroelastic media saturated with a compressible fluid, and the local characteristics of the physical field are fully considered. Each fracture is explicitly characterized using the discrete fracture model (DFM), which can better reflect the physical characteristics near fractures. Based on the extended finite element method (XFEM) and the Newton−Raphson method, a fully coupled approach named Unified Extended Finite Element (UXFEM) is developed, which can solve the nonlinear system of equations that describe the solution under a uni... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data-driven method, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, equivalent circuit model, estimation of SOH, lithium-ion battery
Lithium-ion batteries stand out from other clean energy sources because of their high energy density and small size. With the increasing application scope and scale of lithium-ion batteries, real-time and accurate monitoring of its state of health plays an important role in ensuring the healthy and stable operation of an energy storage system. Due to the interaction of various aging reactions in the aging process of lithium-ion batteries, the capacity attenuation shows no regularity. However, the traditional monitoring method is mainly based on voltage and current, which cannot reflect the internal mechanism, so the accuracy is greatly reduced. Recently, with the development of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, it has been possible to estimate the state of health quickly and accurately online. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy can measure battery impedance in a wide frequency range, so it can reflect the internal aging state of lithium-ion batteries. In this paper, the lates... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Coal, factor analysis, Friedman test, jigging, Kruskal–Wallis test
Coal beneficiation processes are often based on gravitational enrichment techniques. Therefore, various types of jigs are often used in this area. A number of factors determine the quality of the final product. Therefore, proper and systematic monitoring of such a process is necessary. The present work examined the effect of the hutch water amount and the amount of processed coal (system capacity) on the yield and ash grade in individual density−size fractions. A statistical method in the form of the Kruskal−Wallis test and the Friedman test was used to evaluate the process. These tests were proposed as universal and reliable alternatives to classical analysis of variance (ANOVA) analysis. The performed analysis allowed for the determination of what process conditions should be selected in order to obtain certain effects. Therefore, it allowed us to apply certain combinations of hutch water amount, system capacity and particle characteristics to maximize the expected effects. The appli... [more]
A Novel Approach Using High Charging Voltage for the Restoration of Discarded Lead Acid Batteries
Chee Hiun Lee, Jianhui Wong, Yun Seng Lim
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discarded lead acid batteries, high charging voltage, porosity
A lead acid battery is an old renewable battery that is usually discharged to deliver a high surge current to ignite a petrol-based engine. Nowadays, there are different improved versions of lead acid batteries that can deliver high energy densities with low maintenance costs. As the batteries are charged and discharged repeatedly over time, the amount of lead sulfate across the electrode plates grows, reducing the total surface areas of the plates and, thus, the rate of ionization between the electrolyte and the plate surfaces. The batteries then eventually come to the end of their service lives. Even with the improved versions, lead acid batteries are usually discarded at their retirement. However, if the retired batteries can be used for other purposes, the circular economy of the batteries can be improved significantly. It is therefore necessary to study the physical characteristics of the retired batteries and explore means of improving their charging and discharging capabilities.... [more]

Keywords: AC loss, MgB2, multifilamentary MgB2 tape, SMES
SMES technology based on MgB2 superconductor and cryogenic-free cooling can offer a viable solution to power-intensive storage in the short term. One of the main obstacles to the development of dry-cooled SMES systems is the heat load removal due to the AC loss of the superconductor during fast charging and discharging cycles at high power. Accurate knowledge of the amount and distribution of AC loss in the coil is of paramount importance for the sizing and the design of the cooling system and for assessing the possible operational limits of the technology. In this manuscript, the AC loss of a 500 kJ/200 kW multifilamentary MgB2 SMES during charge−discharge cycling at full power is numerically investigated. The methodology and assumptions of the calculation are briefly resumed, and numerical results are reported and discussed in detail. In particular, the time profile and the distribution of the dissipated power all over the coil are reported. An average dissipation of 85.5 mW/m is fou... [more]
A Review of the Use of Electrolytic Cells for Energy and Environmental Applications

Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 reduction, hydrogen production, wastewater treatment, water electrolysis
There is a significant push to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and develop low-cost fuels from renewable sources to replace fossil fuels in applications such as energy production. As a result, CO2 conversion has gained widespread attention as it can reduce the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere and produce fuels and valuable industrial chemicals, including carbon monoxide, alcohols, and hydrocarbons. At the same time, finding ways to store energy in batteries or energy carriers such as hydrogen (H2) is essential. Water electrolysis is a powerful technology for producing high-purity H2, with negligible emission of greenhouse gases, and compatibility with renewable energy sources. Additionally, the electrolysis of organic compounds, such as lignin, is a promising method for localised H2 production, as it requires lower cell voltages than conventional water electrolysis. Industrial wastewater can be employed in those organic electrolysis systems due to their high organic content,... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: concentration ratio, small linear Fresnel reflector, V-trough concentrator
We present the design of an original secondary cavity for use in Small-Scale Fresnel Reflectors in photovoltaic applications. The cavity is similar to the classical V-trough, but the primary reflector system is configured so that there are two focal points on the aperture. The rays coming from each side of the primary system reach the opposite side of the cavity, producing a non-symmetrical distribution of the irradiance. This modifies the acceptance half-angle and allows us to break the maximum limit for the concentration ratio of ideal symmetric concentrators. Our study is analytic, and we provide formulas for any number of reflections. Numerical simulations with a ray-tracing program based on MATLAB are included. We provide a comparison of optical concentration ratio, height and cost parameter between our system and two classical designs with a single focal point: the V-trough and the Compound Parabolic concentrators. This way, we verify that our design yields better concentration r... [more]

Keywords: electrical distribution network, hybrid PVDG-WTDG units, marine predator algorithm, renewable distributed generation, seasonal uncertainties
In the last few years, the integration of renewable distributed generation (RDG) in the electrical distribution network (EDN) has become a favorable solution that guarantees and keeps a satisfying balance between electrical production and consumption of energy. In this work, various metaheuristic algorithms were implemented to perform the validation of their efficiency in delivering the optimal allocation of both RDGs based on multiple photovoltaic distributed generation (PVDG) and wind turbine distributed generation (WTDG) to the EDN while considering the uncertainties of their electrical energy output as well as the load demand’s variation during all the year’s seasons. The convergence characteristics and the results reveal that the marine predator algorithm was effectively the quickest and best technique to attain the best solutions after a small number of iterations compared to the rest of the utilized algorithms, including particle swarm optimization, the whale optimization algori... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dc-dc converter, full-bridge, soft-switching, turn-off snubber
This paper describes a high-frequency soft-switching dc-dc converter with a simple energy recovery capacitor snubber on the secondary side. The presented dc-dc full-bridge converter with the energy recovery snubber removes the main drawbacks of the classic Phase Shifted PWM (PS-PWM) dc-dc converter, e.g., the circulating current flowing during the free-wheeling interval and dependency of the soft switching on the load current. The converter utilizes a full-bridge topology with pulse-width modulation and a centre-tapped full-wave controlled rectifier with one active switch. The zero-voltage switching on the primary side is ensured by utilising only the magnetizing current of the high-frequency transformer, and thus is load-independent. The proposed energy recovery snubber is described in detailed time waveforms of the converter and verified by simulation. The control algorithm also removes the circulating current, which is typical for PS-PWM converters. The soft-switching of the seconda... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D printing, additive manufacturing, electric generator, finite element method, prototype, transverse flux machines
This paper presents a prototype of a low-cost two-phase axial-gap transverse flux generator, in which the magnetic and electric circuits have been made of reused materials, and the stator housing has been manufactured by 3D printing of plastic. Therefore, this work presents as a novelty the combination of the novel transverse flux topology and two challenging trends in electrical machines manufacturing, such as reusing of components and additive manufacturing. Axial-gap transverse flux machines potentially enable the combination of two of the main advantages of axial flux machines and transverse flux machines, i.e., short axial length and a high number of poles. The two-phase arrangement with shared air gap is of great interest in order to reduce further the axial length while avoiding the use of magnetic materials in the rotor, such as iron or soft magnetic composites. However, the equivalent air gap might be large, with significant leakage and fringing effects as the magnetic flux cl... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: charging behavior, charging demand, DC fast, electric vehicle, level 2, public, residential
For a user-centered deployment of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) infrastructure, it is vital to understand electric vehicle user charging behavior. This study identifies user behavioral patterns by analyzing data from more than 7000 charging stations in Canada, comparing residential vs. public Level 2, and public direct current fast (DCFC) vs. public Level 2 charging. A novel algorithm, CHAODA, was applied to identify differences between DCFC and other Level 2 charging options. Through a multivariate and holistic methodology, various patterns emerge, identifying differences in the utilization and seasonality of different EVSE types. The study provides evidence of an “EV Duck Curve” that amplifies the baseline of the power production “Duck Curve,” confirming future challenges for grid stability. Implementations of this study can support future EVSE infrastructure planning efforts and help improve the overall service of electric vehicle supply equipment and grid stability.

Keywords: aerodynamic design, artificial intelligence (AI), centrifugal compressor, computational fluid dynamic (CFD), energy transition, geometry variations
The increasing demand for robust and high-performance centrifugal compressor stages has led to the development of several optimization and uncertainty quantification approaches. However, in the industrial scenario, geometric variations of such pre-engineered stages can occur during customer orders or non-conformity evaluations. In this regard, a rapid low-effort quantification of the impact of these changes has become critical for manufacturers. Against this backdrop, the present study provides an approach based on the joint use of computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) and artificial neural networks to instantly assess the impact of geometric variations on the aerodynamic performance and operating range of centrifugal compressor stages. As a theoretical contribution, the research investigates the capacity of a CFD-based surrogate approach for evaluating variations of stage efficiency and work coefficient. On a practical level, a business-friendly tool for stage performance assessment is... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, Machine Learning, pre-processing, prediction, time series
Pre-processing and analysis of sensor data present several challenges due to their increasingly complex structure and lack of consistency. In this paper, we present TSxtend, a software tool that allows non-programmers to transform, clean, and analyze temporal sensor data by defining and executing process workflows in a declarative language. TSxtend integrates several existing techniques for temporal data partitioning, cleaning, and imputation, along with state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms for prediction and tools for experiment definition and tracking. Moreover, the modular architecture of the tool facilitates the incorporation of additional methods. The examples presented in this paper using the ASHRAE Great Energy Predictor dataset show that TSxtend is particularly effective to analyze energy data.

Keywords: BEM, BIM, drones, energy simulation, photogrammetric survey, sustainable construction, UAS, UAV
Building information modelling (BIM) is the first step towards implementing Building 4.0, where virtual reality and digital twins are key elements. The use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS/drones) to capture data from buildings is nowadays a very popular method, so a methodology was developed to digitally integrate the photogrammetric surveys of a building into BIM, exclusively with the use of drones. Currently, buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption in Europe; therefore, the interconnection between BIM and building energy modelling (BEM) is essential to digitalize the construction sector, increasing competitiveness through cost reduction. In this context, the BlueWoodenHouse Project aims, among other activities, to characterize the solutions/systems of building materials and monitor the temperature, relative humidity and CO2, as well as energy consumption, of a single-family modular wooden house located in the north of Portugal, with 190 m2 and three users. February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: emission factor, estimation, local distribution company, methane emission
As the second-largest contributor to historical global warming, methane emissions must be controlled to slow down temperature increase and achieve climate benefits. Due to a lack of knowledge about the specific sources and processes, a quantitative approach will lead to inaccurate estimation. In this paper, a typical local distribution company with more than 100 years of operation history was chosen. Detailed procedures of pipeline constructions and accidents were investigated, and critical steps leading to methane emissions were clarified. Then emission quantification methodologies for all processes were proposed, including a new pipeline connection, new regulator connection, emergency repair and third-party damages. As a basis for emission estimation, the distribution of parameters, such as diameter, length and pressure, was counted. Then the emission rates of all projects were calculated, and emission factors were established. The average emission rates of the new pipeline connectio... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, concentrations, crosswind, liquid hydrogen
In order to better understand the complex pooling and vaporization of a liquid hydrogen spill, Sandia National Laboratories is conducting a highly instrumented, controlled experiment inside their Shock Tube Facility. Simulations were run before the experiment to help with the planning of experimental conditions, including sensor placement and cross wind velocity. This paper describes the modeling used in this planning process and its main conclusions. Sierra Suite’s Fuego, an in-house computational fluid dynamics code, was used to simulate a RANS model of a liquid hydrogen spill with five crosswind velocities: 0.45, 0.89, 1.34, 1.79, and 2.24 m/s. Two pool sizes were considered: a diameter of 0.85 m and a diameter of 1.7. A grid resolution study was completed on the smaller pool size with a 1.34 m/s crosswind. A comparison of the length and height of the plume of flammable hydrogen vaporizing from the pool shows that the plume becomes longer and remains closer to the ground with increa... [more]
