Damage Assessment of Roadway Wall Caused by Dynamic and Static Load Action of Gas Explosion
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: damage assessment, dynamic and static loads, gas explosion, numerical simulation, P-I curve
In order to obtain the damage characteristics of a roadway wall caused by a gas explosion, the damage evaluation theory of a roadway wall under the dynamic and static loads of a gas explosion is analyzed in this paper. Meanwhile, an evaluation method (overpressure−impulse criterion) is selected to evaluate the damage of the roadway wall under the impact load of the gas explosion. A mathematical model and a physical analysis model of the roadway wall damage are established by LS-DYNA software. The dynamic response of the roadway wall caused by the dynamic and static loads of the gas explosion is numerically simulated. The overpressure and impulse of gas explosion propagation are measured, while the damage data of the roadway wall under different overpressure and impulse loads are obtained. The P-I curves of the roadway wall under different dynamic and static loads of gas explosion are drawn. The fitting formula of P-I curves of the roadway wall is obtained. The influence of different ge... [more]

Effect of Rational Fertilizer for Eggplants on Nitrogen and Phosphorus Pollutants in Agricultural Water Bodies
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agricultural receiving waters, agricultural surface source pollution, clean production, excessive fertilizer application, nitrogen and phosphorus pollutant transport
Excessive fertilizer application in the cropping industry leads to excessive nitrogen and phosphorus in surrounding water bodies, which causes farmers to increase economic cost and damage the environment. To address the problem, we built a crop-soil runoff soil column test system, setting eight fertilizer application levels for eggplants. Then, crop yield, soil fertility and pollutant concentrations in the receiving water bodies were measured. The process of fertilizer application on the water quality of surrounding receiving water bodies and the rationality of fertilizer application were analyzed. The results showed that crop yield, soil fertility, and pollutant concentrations in the receiving water increased with the increase in fertilizer application. The crop yield stabilized when the fertilizer application amount was higher than 0.12 kg/m2; the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the water increased significantly with the increase in fertilizer appli... Recovery of Rare Earth Elements from NdFeB Magnets by Chlorination and Distillation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chlorination, Distillation, NdFeB magnets, Rare Earth Chlorides, Rare Earth Elements (REEs), recycling
A sustainable separation concept for large-scale recycling of NdFeB magnets under atmospheric pressure was developed by utilizing a combination of two separation concepts known from the literature: (I) selective pre-separation by in situ chlorination and evaporation of ground oxidized NdFeB material and (II) subsequent distillation for high-purity recovery of all recyclable chlorinated material components, especially its Rare Earth Elements (REEs). Theoretically, simplified estimations of the time conversion curves at 1173 K, 1273 K, and 2000 K of a single particle resulted in the idea of realizing chlorination in some kind of combustion chamber, fluidized bed, or continuous combustion chamber. After chlorination, all non-volatile components, such as REE chlorides, are condensed out of the vapor phase in a single-stage phase separator. For subsequent fine separation by distillation (1292−1982 K for Rare Earth Chlorides and 418−867 K at 2500 kPa for boron and zirconium chloride recovery... [more]

Multicomponent Synthesis of Unsymmetrical Derivatives of 4-Methyl-Substituted 5-Nitropyridines
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 2-nitroacetophenone, 5(3)-nitro-1,4-dihydropyridines, 5(3)-nitropyridines, acetaldehyde diethyl acetal, green chemistry, multicomponent reaction, nitroacetone, β-dicarbonyl compounds
The multicomponent reaction of 2-nitroacetophenone (or nitroacetone), acetaldehyde diethyl acetal, β-dicarbonyl compound, and ammonium acetate in an acetic acid solution allowed the acquisition of previously undescribed 4-methyl-substituted derivatives of 5-nitro-1,4-dihydropyridine in satisfactory yields. The oxidation of the obtained 5-nitro-1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives resulted in the corresponding 2,4-dimethyl-5-nitropyridines. In addition, for the first time in the synthesis of unsymmetrical 1,4-dihydropyridines by the Hantzsch reaction acetaldehyde, diethyl acetal was used as a source of acetaldehyde. The use of more volatile and sufficiently reactive acetaldehyde in this reaction did not lead to a controlled synthesis of unsymmetrical 5-nitro-1,4-dihydropyridines. The proposed multicomponent approach to the synthesis of 4-methyl-substituted 5-nitro-1,4-dihydropyridines and their subsequent aromatization into pyridines made it possible to obtain previously undescribed and hard... Numerical Analysis of Magnetic−Fluid−Thermal Multifield Coupling Processes in Electric Fused Magnesia Furnace
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: fused magnesia, mathematical model, operating current, production stage, six-electrode
The production of fused magnesia is a process in which raw materials are melted and recrystallized in the electric-fused magnesia furnace (EFMF). Temperature is the key factor that affects production, but it is difficult to be observed and monitored due to the high internal temperature. Thus, the working current is the standard for workers to judge whether the production process is normal. In order to master heat transfer characteristics in the furnace and accurately control the processes, a three-dimensional mathematical model of coupling the magnetic−fluid−thermal multifield has been established in a six-electrode EFMF. The model also considers the thermal decomposition of magnesium carbonate in the furnace. The phase change of materials is simulated by the solidification and melting model. The results show that the current density and Joule heat are concentrated in the region below the electrode. When the current size increases to 12,500 A, the molten pool begins to be connected. Th... Multi-Objective Bus Timetable Coordination Considering Travel Time Uncertainty
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bus operation, multi-objective optimization, Simulation, timetable coordination, waiting time
This paper proposes a timetable coordination method for transfer problems in a bus transit system. With a given bus network, a stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model has been formulated to obtain coordinated bus timetables with the objective of minimizing a weighted sum of the average value of total waiting time and its average absolute deviation value, allowing for random bus travel time. The vital decision variable is the terminal departure offset time of each target bus trip within a certain off-peak period. The robust MILP model can also be used to solve the first-bus transfer problem with the introduction of several new linear constraints. A solution method based on the Monte Carlo simulation has been developed to solve the MILP model. Numerical experiments have been conducted for different scenarios. The results indicate that bus timetables coordinated by the developed model are capable of substantially reducing waiting time for transfer and non-transfer passeng... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: furrow effect, numerical simulation, orthogonal optimization, sidetracking packer, slip
This work established a finite element analysis (FEA) model of an inserted tooth-type slip assembly under bear setting load and axial load, calculated the differences between the inserted teeth of the sidetracking packer slip-formed furrow shapes on the casing face, and analyzed the setting reliability of the inserted tooth slip sidetracking packer. The orthogonal optimization analysis of the structural parameters of the sidetracking packer was carried out on the basis of the furrow effect. Finally, the setting experiment was conducted with the inserted tooth slip sidetracking packer developed to verify correctness of the FEA model and the simulation results. The results show that in the FEA and calculation of the setting process of the inserted tooth-type slip, it is not only necessary to consider the furrow friction coefficient, but also the effect of the ridge on the furrow friction coefficient. The corresponding furrow friction coefficient varies according to the different furrow e... [more]

Correction of Light and Heavy Hydrocarbons and Their Application in a Shale Oil Reservoir in Gaoyou Sag, Subei Basin—A Case Study from Well SX84
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: classified resource, Gaoyou Sag, light and heavy hydrocarbon correction, resource evaluation, shale oil
To accurately evaluate the shale oil resources in the Funing Formation of the Gaoyou Sag, Subei Basin, light and heavy hydrocarbon correction models of S1 were developed based on the rock pyrolysis of liquefrozen, conventional, and oil-washed shales. The improved ΔlogR technique was applied to establish the TOC, S1, and S2 logging evaluation methods. The results showed that the S2 values after oil washing were significantly lower than before. The difference between these two S2 (ΔS2) values is the heavy hydrocarbon correction amount of S1, which is about 0.69 S2. There was almost no loss of light hydrocarbons during liquefrozen shales’ pyrolysis tests; the ratio of liquefrozen to conventional S1 values is the light hydrocarbon correction factor, which is about 1.67. The corrected S1 is about 3.2 times greater than the conventional shale-tested value. The S1 and TOC are obviously “trichotomous”; a TOC greater than 1.5% and corrected S1 larger than 4.0 mg/g corresponds to the enriched re... [more]

Fluid-Solid Coupling-Based Vibration Generation Mechanism of the Multiphase Vortex
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Information Management
Keywords: fluid-solid coupling, fluidic vibration, metallurgical pouring process, multiphase vortex, stochastic signal processing
Multiphase vortices are widely present in the metallurgical pouring processes, chemical material extraction, hydroelectric power plant energy conversion, and other engineering fields. Its critical state detection is of great significance in improving product yield and resource utilization. However, the multiphase vortex is a complex dynamics problem with highly nonlinear features, and its fluid-induced vibration-generation mechanism faces significant challenges. A fluid-solid coupling-based modeling method is proposed to explore mass transfer process with the vorticity distribution and vibration-generation mechanism. A vibration-processing method is utilized to discuss the four flow-state transition features. A fluid-induced vibration experiment platform is established to verify the numerical results. It is found that the proposed modeling method can better reveal the vibration-evolution regularities of the fluid-solid coupling process. The flow field has a maximum value in the complex... [more]

Leakage Model of Tubing and Casing Premium Connection Based on Sinusoidal Contact Simulation between Rough Surfaces
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: leakage rate, premium connection, roughness, sealing performance, sinusoidal contact simulation, tubing and casing
This paper proposed a semi-theoretical model to quantitatively predict leakage rate of tubing and casing premium connections. The geometric parameters of the sealing surface profile approximated by a sinusoidal micro-convex surface were first obtained based on the random normal distribution sampling method. With the actual area prediction formula for elastic−plastic contact of an axisymmetric sinusoidal micro-convex body based on the equivalent simulation principle, the circumferential leakage width and radial average leakage height of the micro-leakage channel between sealing surfaces were then acquired with the surface roughness and geometric mean contact pressure. At last, the actual micro-leakage rate of the premium connection was derived by considering the non-uniform contact pressure distribution between sealing surfaces. An example was investigated to validate the model and reveal the sealing and leakage characteristics, and anti-leakage measures were proposed. The results show... [more]

Challenges in the Simulation of Drying in Fluid Bed Granulation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: agglomeration, breakage, drying, fluidized beds, granulation, Modelling, Simulation
Fluid bed granulation is faced with a high level of complexity due to the simultaneous occurrence of agglomeration, breakage, and drying. These complexities should be thoroughly investigated through particle−particle, particle−droplet, and particle−fluid interactions to understand the process better. The present contribution focuses on the importance of drying and the associated challenges when modeling a granulation process. To do so, initially, we will present a summary of the numerical approaches, from micro-scale to macro-scale, used for the simulation of drying and agglomeration in fluid bed granulators. Depending on the modeled scale, each approach features several advantages and challenges. We classified the imposed challenges based on their contributions to the drying rate. Then, we critically scrutinized how these challenges have been addressed in the literature. Our review identifies some of the main challenges related to (i) the interaction of droplets with particles; (ii) t... [more]

Characterization of Sludge Resulting from Chemical Coagulation and Electrocoagulation of Pumping Water from Fishmeal Factories
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical coagulation, electrocoagulation, pumping water fishmeal industry, sludge from pumping water
In the fishmeal industry, seawater is used to transport fish to the factories. Due to this, “pumping water” with high concentrations of organic matter is generated that is treated via chemical coagulation before letting it into the sea. The objective of this study is to characterize and compare the sludge obtained from conventional chemical coagulation and the sludge from the electrocoagulation process. A pilot electrocoagulation plant was built next to a chemical coagulation plant. The sludge obtained from both methodologies was analyzed for its proximal composition, its iron and aluminum content, and the fatty acid profile in its contained fat. Electrocoagulation was found to produce sludge with a higher concentration of lipids and ash, which indirectly confirmed that it removes more organic pollutants and salts than chemical coagulation. The contents of aluminum and iron in the sludge obtained by electrocoagulation were 4.2% and 0.025%, respectively, while those in the sludge obtain... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: abiotic stress, Dunaliella salina, proteome, selenite
is currently one of the most commercially valuable microalgae species in the world. In reponse to selenite, D. salina is a microalgae with a high selenium content, thereby increasing its value, which is crucial for increasing its economic value as a nutrional supplement. However, the effects of selenite on D. salina are still unclear, and its molecular mechanism of the response to selenite stress is also elusive. Here, in order to study the effects of selenite on D. salina and the corresponding regulatory mechanism, we characterized the physiological phenotypes of D. salina under different selenite concentrations and carried out a quantitative proteomic study. The results showed that the effective concentration for 50% growth inhibition (EC50) of the algae was 192.7 mg/L after 11 days of cultivation. Menthol and Fatty Acid-Based Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents as Media for Enzyme Activation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: enzyme kinetics, fatty acid, hydrogen-bonding, hydrophobic agent, natural deep eutectic solvents
This research aims to provide insights into the biological efficacy of a newly formed hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES). A DES based on menthol was successfully synthesized with fatty acids. The DESs’ properties as enzyme activators were examined against a neat counterpart. The menthol:decanoic acid (1:1) combination showed improved thermal stability, strong catalytic activity, and reusability for up to four subsequent cycles under ideal conditions (pH 7.0, 40 °C for 2 h). The hydrophobic DES replaced hexane in ester synthesis, where RNL@DES5 showed better fatty acid conversion compared to neat RNL. This study demonstrated promising applications of hydrophobic DESs in non-aqueous organic reactions.

Keywords: airflow anti-tangling, bag breaking, bagged waste, domestic waste disposal, supported cutting
The mechanized resource utilization of domestic waste is the development trend in the field of waste treatment. The difficulty of bag breaking and the easy entanglement of domestic waste are the factors restricting the mechanization of waste separation and recycling. In response to the above problems, an internal blowing anti-tangle bag-breaking device for domestic waste was developed by combining the arc-type cutter and the internal flow field of the rotary. In addition, the motion trajectory of the cutters and the support rods were theoretically analyzed, as well as the force during the bag-breaking process of domestic waste. A three-factor, five-level orthogonal test was carried out to complete the regression ANOVA, and a relationship model was constructed between the test factors such as the cutting−support speed ratio, the center distance, the inlet flow rate and the response indicators such as the bag film length−perimeter ratio and bag film winding specific gravity. Why Should We Test the Wideband Transformation Accuracy of Inductive Current Transformers?
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: accuracy, current error, current transformer, distorted current, high current, higher harmonics, instrument transformer, phase displacement, self-generation
Inductive current transformers are characterized by different transformation accuracies for higher harmonics of distorted primary currents. Therefore, it is highly required to perform the tests of their metrological properties to choose the best unit that ensures the lowest values of current error and phase displacement. This study presents a comparison of two manufactured inductive current transformers. The results indicate that some inductive current transformers may be used to accurately transform distorted currents, enabling proper distortion of power metering and quality evaluation. However, to obtain adequate transformation properties in the wide frequency range, the cross-section of the magnetic core of the inductive current transformer should be oversized. Moreover, it is required to use a permalloy magnetic core instead of the typical transformer steel core. In the analyzed case, the metrological performance depends mainly on its accuracy for transforming the main component of... [more]
