Analysis of the Carreau Model Mixed Mechanism with a Stir Shaft in Color FDM Printing
Xinji Gan, Zhang Wang, Zhongyuan Xing, Perk Lin Chong, Mohammad Hossein Yazdi
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carreau model, color FDM printing, FDM 3D printer, mixed mechanism, stirring shaft
Conventionally, fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing allows for multiple color printing, but it is limited to only various monochromatic colors. Consequently, the effect of progressive color transition cannot be reflected. To produce the progressive 3-D color printing effect, the only solution is to implement stereolithography technology, which is particularly expensive. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to develop a color mixing mechanism to be incorporated into an FDM 3D printer, which is relatively inexpensive. The underlying idea is to pre-mix the color so that the FDM 3D printer can produce a progressive color printing effect. Three conceptual color mixing mechanisms are designed, i.e., a triangular stirring shaft, a rectangular spoiler stirring shaft, and a spiral blade stirring shaft. The mixing process is modeled based on the non-Newtonian fluid theory, in which the Carreau model is used to simulate the motion of pseudoplastic fluids in FDM 3D printing under forced mix... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fire and explosion risk analysis, individual risk, quantitative risk assessment (QRA), societal risk
Pipeline is one of the safest and most cost-effective means of transportation for hydrocarbons. However, hydrocarbon releases and the subsequent fires and explosions, are presented as persistent events. Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) enables one to address the risk and to prevent these events. In this regard, different approaches have been proposed for pipelines, but few studies are focused on oil transportation. This paper presents a methodology for performing QRA for onshore oil pipelines, which is based on the calculation of individual and societal risk indicators. This methodology is illustrated using an authentic case study of a segment of 17.53 km of the length of an onshore oil pipeline located in the southwest of Colombia, considering jet and pool fire scenarios. The results show that the Individual Risk Per Annum (IRPA) for operation (and maintenance) and administrative workers are 6.14 × 10−4 and 8.52 × 10−5 yr−1, respectively. The IRPA for people close to the pipeline is... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acoustic signal, adaptive multi-threshold segmentation, fault diagnosis, local maximum mean discrepancy, subdomain adaptation, variable speed condition
The data distribution of the vibration signal under different speed conditions of the gearbox is different, which leads to reduced accuracy of fault diagnosis. In this regard, this paper proposes a deep transfer fault diagnosis algorithm combining adaptive multi-threshold segmentation and subdomain adaptation. First of all, in the data acquisition stage, a non-contact, easy-to-arrange, and low-cost sound pressure sensor is used to collect equipment signals, which effectively solves the problems of contact installation limitations and increasingly strict layout requirements faced by traditional vibration signal-based methods. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is then used to convert the original vibration signal of the device into time−frequency image samples. Further, to highlight the target fault characteristics of the samples, the gray wolf optimization algorithm (GWO) is combined with symmetric cross entropy (SCE) to perform adaptive multi-threshold segmentation on the image sa... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: drinking water emergency extraction vehicle, mathematical model, verification test, water intake characteristics
In this paper, by analyzing the heat and mass transfer characteristics of the dehumidification runner microelement channel of a drinking water emergency extraction vehicle, a mathematical model of heat and mass transfer in the water intake process is established, and the influence of the runner parameters (adsorbent thickness, regeneration angle, rotation speed) and air parameters (treatment air temperature/humidity, regenerated air temperature/humidity) on the water intake characteristics is mainly studied. Water extraction experiments are carried out in arid desert areas and humid island environments. The test results showed that compared with the calculated data, the deviations in the temperature and humidity of the treated air outlet were 3.03% and 4.14%, respectively, and the deviation value of the water intake was 8.23% when the moisture content of the inlet air was 2 g/kg.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Bayesian network, coal mine gas explosion, HFACS framework, human factors, unsafe acts
Even in the context of smart mines, unsafe human acts are still an important cause of coal mine gas explosion accidents, but there are few models to analyze unsafe human acts in coal mine gas explosion accidents. This study tries to solve this problem through a risk assessment method of unsafe acts in coal mine gas explosion accidents based on Human Factor Analysis and Classification system (HFACS-GE) and Bayesian networks (BN). After verifying the reliability of HFACS-GE framework, a BN model of risk factors of unsafe acts was established with the Chi-square test and odds ratios analysis. After reasoning analysis, risk paths and key risk factors of unsafe acts were obtained, and preventive measures were granted. Based on the analysis of 100 coal mine gas explosion cases, the maximum probability of five kinds of unsafe acts of employees is 38%. Among the 22 risk factors, the mental state of employees has the greatest influence on the habitual violation of regulations, and the sensitivi... [more]

Alexander Uhl, Axel Schmidt, Mark W. Hlawitschka, Jochen Strube
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aqueous two-phase, autonomous operation, biomanufacturing, digital twins, liquid–liquid extraction, Machine Learning
Liquid−liquid extraction has proven to be an aid in biologics manufacturing for cell and component separation. Because distribution coefficients and separation factors can be appropriately adjusted via phase screening, especially in aqueous two-phase systems, one stage is frequently feasible. For biologics separation, aqueous two-phase systems have proven to be feasible and efficient. The simple mixer−settler equipment type is still not standard in biologics manufacturing operations. Therefore, a scalable digital twin would be of aid for operator training, process design under the regulatory demanded quality by design approach for risk analysis, design and control space definition, and predictive maintenance. Autonomous operation is achieved with the aid of process analytical technology to update the digital twin to real time events and to allow process control near any optimal operation point. Autonomous operation is first demonstrated with an experimental feasibility study based on a... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: correlation, friction coefficient, resilience, salted wakame, shear strength, tensile strength
At present, there has been no mechanized equipment designed for the separation of the leaves from the stems of wakame in China, and the stem−leaf separation is mainly completed by manual work, which suffers from problems such as low efficiency, high cost, and poor quality. To develop mechanized stem−leaf separation equipment of wakame, it is necessary to have a preliminary understanding of the biomechanical characteristics of wakame. In this study, we adopted an electronic universal testing machine, a texture tester, and a friction tester to investigate the mechanical characteristics of the stems and leaves of salted wakame. Analysis was performed to clarify the effects of salted wakame thickness and loading speed on the tension, compression, shear, and separation mechanical properties as well as the effects of the loading speed, normal force, and contact material on the friction characteristics. As shown in the results, the average tensile strength, shear strength, and resilience of s... [more]

Keywords: carbon emotion, evolutionary game theory, intelligent coal mine, RDEU theory
The intelligent development of coal mines is a crucial way to achieve the safe, efficient, green, and low-carbon transformation of the coal industry and to reach the “double carbon” target, which is related to the life and health of miners, the stable development of enterprises and the national energy reform. As directly affected subjects, the cooperative attitudes of miners in different emotional states have a significant impact on the smooth implementation of intelligent coal mine renovation projects. Hence, we combined the RDEU theory and game theory, constructed a three-party evolutionary game model of the small and medium-sized energy enterprises (SMEE), the government, and the miner, considered the influence of the strategies made by the miner on the equilibrium strategy choices of other game subjects in the intelligent coal mine construction under the rational and irrational emotional states of the miner, and finally used MATLAB 2021 to simulate and analyze the impact of the evo... Xie Xie, Yongyue Zheng, Tianwei Mu, Fucai Wan, Hai Dong
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crane scheduling, cuckoo search algorithm, mixed integer linear programming, steelmaking
This research is motivated by the practical pre-steelmaking stage in large iron and steel companies, which have steady and heavy demands for the steelmaking production process. Our problem studied the pre-steelmaking stage, which consists of two steps that are needed in each convertor before the steelmaking process. During each step, a necessary transportation must be operated by a crane. In contrast to the classical two-machine flowshop problem during which both machines are fixed, these transporting operations are performed by two mounted, removeable cranes. Our problem is scheduling two-crane operations for the sake of minimizing the last convertors’ completion time (makespan); that is, the last finish time among the total operation of the two cranes is minimized. This study was concerned with resolving the interference between two cranes by determining the sequence of loading operations and how each crane avoids the other in order to let it complete its next operation first. A mixe... [more]

Congfang Hu, Tao Yuan, Shiping Yang, Yunbo Hu, Xiao Liang
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamics behavior, load sharing, pitch drive, planetary gear system, wind energy
For a wind energy system, main speed-increasing gearboxes, pitch drives and yaw drives are composed of a multistage planetary gear system. However, inevitable errors in the manufacturing and assembling of the gears lead to uneven load of distribution in the planetary gear system; thus, its service life and reliability decrease greatly, which would eventually affect the normal operation of the whole wind power system. In this study, a dynamic load sharing model of pitch drive is established with a lumped-parameter method. Given the manufacturing and assembly errors and central floating gear, the dynamic equations for each component, the stiffness matrix and damping matrix, the dynamic load sharing coefficient and the floating displacement of the sun gear are obtained according to the dynamic meshing force and damping load. Furthermore, the load sharing coefficient for external and internal meshing of the pitch drive for a 2 MW wind turbine with a three-stage planetary gear are achieved.... [more]

Keywords: 110 ksi casing steel, carbides, grain boundary, micro-structure characteristics, sulfide stress cracking resistance
The sulfide stress cracking (SSC) behavior of three micro-alloying 110 ksi grade Cr-Mo casing steels were evaluated according to the A-Method tensile test specified in the NACE TM0177 standard (NACE A-method). The fractures of SSC specimens and the micro-structures of the casing steels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in the BF and STEM mode. The results show that on the premise of 110 ksi, the yield strength of Co-Mo steel was satisfactory, finer spherical carbides increased the number of irreversible traps; widened polygonised martensitic laths, lowered dislocation density, and lowered the proportion of high-angle grain boundaries and the Σ3 boundaries decreased hydrogen permeability and diffusivity. The SSC resistance of Co-Mo steel with above micro structure characteristics was enhanced.

Keywords: concrete crack, image segmentation, omni-dimensional dynamic convolution, pyramidal residual network, unbalanced sample
Automated crack detection technologies based on deep learning have been extensively used as one of the indicators of performance degradation of concrete structures. However, there are numerous drawbacks of existing methods in crack segmentation due to the fine and microscopic properties of cracks. Aiming to address this issue, a crack segmentation method is proposed. First, a pyramidal residual network based on encoder−decoder using Omni-Dimensional Dynamic Convolution is suggested to explore the network suitable for the task of crack segmentation. Additionally, the proposed method uses the mean intersection over union as the network evaluation index to lessen the impact of background features on the network performance in the evaluation and adopts a multi-loss calculation of positive and negative sample imbalance to weigh the negative impact of sample imbalance. As a final step in performance evaluation, a dataset for concrete cracks is developed. By using our dataset, the proposed me... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: enzymatic hydrolysis, fish processing byproducts, fish protein hydrolysates, oxidation, storage
There is a significant potential to increase the sustainability of the fishing and aquaculture industries through the maximization of the processing of byproducts. Enzymatic hydrolysis provides an opportunity to valorize downstream fish industry byproducts for the production of protein hydrolysates (FPH) as a source of bioactive peptides (BAP) with health benefits. Deteriorative oxidative reactions may occur during the enzymatic hydrolysis of byproducts, influencing the safety or bioactivities of the end product. Lipid oxidation, autolysis mediated by endogenous enzymes in viscera, protein degradation, and formation of low-molecular-weight metabolites are the main reactions that are expected to occur during hydrolysis and need to be controlled. These depend on the freshness, proper handling, and the type of byproducts used. Viscera, frames, trimmings, and heads are the byproducts most available for enzymatic hydrolysis. They differ in their composition, and, thus, require standardizati... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: ground impact, multiple risk sources, risk assessment, safety level map, unmanned aircraft
This paper investigates the risk quantification for Unmanned Aircraft (UA) in urban environments, focusing on the safety of ground people. An assessment methodology is proposed to quantify the flying risk, which indicates the ground fatalities resulted from different potential risk sources. With the knowledge of UA’s specifications and ground environments, the flying risk of the target UA flying in the target area could be evaluated from the combination of results from independent assessment procedures focusing on multiple potential risk sources with specific safety metrics. A study case to assess the flying risk of the Talon and the DJI Inspire 2 flying in one piece of the region in Chengdu is presented. From the assessment result, the airspace management strategies for both Talon and DJI Inspires 2 could be easily developed to guarantee the safety of ground people, therefore, this risk quantification method could be a general tool to support decision-making in safety work.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distributed photovoltaic, distribution network partition, energy storage system, siting and sizing, trilevel clustering
At present, due to the fact that large-scale distributed photovoltaics can access distribution networks and that there is a mismatch between load demand and photovoltaic output time, it is difficult for traditional distributed photovoltaic planning to meet the partition-based control of high permeability photovoltaic grid-connected operations. As a solution to this problem, this paper proposes a planning method for photovoltaic storage partitions. First of all, a partitioning method for electrical distance modularity based on voltage/active power and voltage/reactive power is presented, along with a modified AP-TD-K-medoids trilevel clustering algorithm that was designed to cluster and partition the distribution network. In addition, according to the partitioning results, a bilevel co-ordination planning model for distributed photovoltaic storage was developed. The upper level aimed to minimize the annual comprehensive cost for which the decision variables are the photovoltaic capacity... [more]
Study on Mechanical Properties of Composite Foundation with Rigid Pile Based on the Cushion and Strength Adjustor Control

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: composite foundation, cushion, foam concrete slab, rigid pile, settlement error
Settlement of the pile ends in end-bearing rigid pile composite foundations is generally minimal, so only relying on the cushion to coordinate the pile soil deformation may result in insufficient deformation adjustment capacity. Using a deformation adjustor with a specific stiffness on the top of the pile is a method to coordinate pile−soil deformation, and the stiffness value of the deformation adjustor depends on the accurate calculation of soil deformation; however, the calculation of soil deformation is not mature at present. A new deformation adjustor based on strengths used in composite foundations is proposed, in which foam slabs with different yield strengths are placed on the top of the pile to coordinate the pile−soil deformation. Five tests are used to study the mechanical and deformation properties of a composite foundation with a foam slab. The test results show that when the stress at the top of the pile is less than the yield strength of the foam slab, the coordination o... [more]

The bioavailability of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFAs) has shown to be greatly influenced by their location in the triacylglycerol backbone. Therefore, the synthesis of structured acylglycerols (SAcyl), which include eicosapentaenoic acids (EPAs) or docosahexaenoic acids (DHAs) at the sn-2 position, has attracted a great interest. The objective of this study was to optimize the synthesis process of a SAcyl from commercial refined salmon oil and an EPA/DHA concentrate in order to enhance the positioning of EPA and DHA in the sn-2 location of the glycerol moiety. For this purpose, immobilized lipase B from Candida antarctica (nonspecific) was used for the acidolysis process under the CO2 supercritical condition. As a result of carrying out a Draper-Lin composite design through the response surface methodology of 18 experiments, an optimized extraction including SAcyl compounds was obtained. Mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) analysis was employed to identify the EPA/D... [more]

Recent studies have demonstrated that cancer cells can elude immune cells by creating a sanctuary within the tumor’s microenvironment. Large amounts of immune-suppressing signaling proteins can be expressed by cancer cells. One of the most important mechanisms in this system is immune suppression caused by tumors and the modulation of the immune checkpoint. The immune checkpoint is modulated by both the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and its ligands, programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) and PD-L2. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNA), including the more well-known microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs), all play roles in the regulation of biological processes and extensive diseases such as cancer. Thus, the focus of this study is on the interactions between the programmed death protein and its ligands with miRNAs, lncRNAs, and circRNAs during tumorigenesis and tumor progression. Furthermore, some FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of various cancers... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: biomass pretreatment, biorefinery, non-thermal plasma
Climatic changes and the growing population call for innovative solutions that are able to produce biochemicals by adopting environmentally sustainable procedures. The biorefinery concept meets this requirement. However, one of the main drawbacks of biorefineries is represented by the feedstocks’ pretreatment. Lately, scientific research has focused on non-thermal plasma, which is an innovative and sustainable pretreatment that is able to obtain a high sugar concentration. In the present review, literature related to the use of non-thermal plasma for the production of fermentable sugar have been collected. In particular, its sugar extraction, time, and energy consumption have been compared with those of traditional biomass pretreatments. As reported, on one hand, this emerging technology is characterized by low costs and no waste production; on the other hand, the reactor’s configuration must be optimized to reduce time and energy demand.

Keywords: anomaly detection, Artificial Intelligence, energy savings, fault detection and diagnosis, HVAC, Machine Learning
Faults and anomalous behavior affect the operation of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. This causes performance loss, energy waste, noncompliance with regulations and discomfort among occupants. To prevent damage, automated, fast identification of faults in HVAC systems is needed. Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD) techniques are very effective for these purposes. The best FDD methods, in terms of cost effectiveness and data exploitation, are based on process history; i.e., on sensor data from automation systems. In this work, supervised and semi-supervised models were developed. Other than with regard to outdoor temperature and humidity, the input parameters of an HVAC system have few internal variables. Performance of traditional methods (e.g., VAR, Random Forest) is low, so Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were selected, since they can capture nonlinear relationships among features and are easily optimized. ANNs can detect simultaneous faults from different... [more]

Designing an efficient wireless sensor network (WSN) system is considered a challenging problem due to the limited energy supply per sensor node. In this paper, the performance of several bi-objective optimization algorithms in providing energy-efficient clustering solutions that can extend the lifetime of sensor nodes were investigated. Specifically, we considered the use of the Moth−Flame Optimization (MFO) algorithm and the Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), as well as the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), in providing efficient cluster-head selection decisions. Compared to a reference scheme using the Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol, the simulation results showed that integrating the MFO, SSA or WOA algorithms into WSN clustering protocols could significantly extend the WSN lifetime, which improved the nodes’ residual energy, the number of alive nodes, the fitness function and the network throughput. The results also revealed that the MFO algorithm outperformed... [more]

Keywords: coupling simulation, induction heating, magneto-thermal coupling, susceptor
As a new non-contact heating technology, induction heating technology has very broad application prospects in the field of fluid food heating. However, its application is inevitably affected by the heat concentration caused by uneven energy distribution. The uneven temperature distribution of the heating process will lead to the decrease in the quality of heating products. Therefore, based on the previous research, in order to improve the uniformity of heat distribution in the heating process, this study selected the susceptor with the greatest potential for efficient and the most uniform heating fluid to carry out the coupling simulation of electromagnetic heat transfer. The susceptor was simulated and optimized in three aspects: different power comparisons, the influence of structural change on temperature distribution uniformity, and the influence of physical property change of metal material on temperature distribution uniformity. The results show that the simulation results are in... [more]
