Subject: Optimization
Keywords: decision-making, geothermal, multi-objective, Optimization, ORC
Power plants based on organic Rankine cycle (ORC) are known for their capacity in converting low and medium-temperature energy sources to electricity. To find the optimal operating conditions, a designer must evaluate the ORC from different perspectives including thermodynamic performance, technological limits, economic viability, and environmental impact. A popular approach to include different criteria simultaneously is to formulate a bi-objective optimization problem. This type of multi-objective optimization (MOO) allows for finding a set of optimal design points by defining two different objectives. Once the optimization is completed, the decision-making analysis shall be carried out to identify the final design solution. This study aims to develop a decision-making tool for facilitating the choice of the optimal design point. The proposed procedure is coded in MATLAB based on the commonly used Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). By providing t... [more]

Keywords: neural networks, Optimization, stirling engines, VSCGM
The present study develops a novel optimization method for designing a Stirling engine by combining a variable-step simplified conjugate gradient method (VSCGM) and a neural network training algorithm. As compared with existing gradient-based methods, like the conjugate gradient method (CGM) and simplified conjugate gradient method (SCGM), the VSCGM method is a further modified version presented in this study which allows the convergence speed to be greatly accelerated while the form of the objective function can still be defined flexibly. Through the automatic adjustment of the variable step size, the optimal design is reached more efficiently and accurately. Therefore, the VSCGM appears to be a potential and alternative tool in a variety of engineering applications. In this study, optimization of a low-temperature-differential gamma-type Stirling engine was attempted as a test case. The optimizer was trained by the neural network algorithm based on the training data provided from thr... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: condenser outlet split, household refrigeration cycle, nozzle exit position, Optimization, two-phase ejector
The objective of this study is to investigate the performance characteristics of a small-sized R600a household refrigeration system that adopts a condenser outlet split (COS) ejector cycle under various operating and ejector geometry conditions. The coefficient of performance and pressure lifting ratio of the COS ejector cycle were analyzed and measured by varying the entrainment ratio, compressor speed, and nozzle exit position. The optimum nozzle exit position in the COS ejector cycle adopted to achieve the maximum cycle performance was proposed as a function of the compressor speed and entrainment ratio. The optimum nozzle exit position was 0 mm when the entrainment ratio and compressor speed were low, and it increased as the entrainment ratio and compressor speed increased owing to the associated internal pressure drop in the suction section.

Keywords: control, electric vehicle, heat pump, HVAC system, optimal allocation, optimisation
The heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system negatively affects the electric vehicle (EV) driving range, especially under cold ambient conditions. Modern HVAC systems based on the vapour-compression cycle can be rearranged to operate in the heat pump mode to improve the overall system efficiency compared to conventional electrical/resistive heaters. Since such an HVAC system is typically equipped with multiple actuators (compressor, pumps, fans, valves), with the majority of them being controlled in open loop, an optimisation-based control input allocation is necessary to achieve the highest efficiency. This paper presents a genetic algorithm optimisation-based HVAC control input allocation method, which utilises a multi-physical HVAC system model implemented in Dymola/Modelica. The considered control inputs include the cabin inlet air temperature reference, blower and radiator fan air mass flows and secondary coolant loop pumps’ speeds. The optimal allocation is subject... Synthetic natural gas (SNG) production from coal is one of the well-matured options to make clean utilization of coal a reality. For the ease of transportation and supply, liquefaction of SNG is highly desirable. In the liquefaction of SNG, efficient removal of low boiling point impurities such as hydrogen (H2) and nitrogen (N2) is highly desirable to lower the power of the liquefaction process. Among several separation processes, membrane-based separation exhibits the potential for the separation of low boiling point impurities at low power consumption as compared to the existing separation processes. In this study, the membrane unit was used to simulate the membrane module by using Aspen HYSYS V10 (Version 10, AspenTech, Bedford, MA, United States). The two-stage and two-step system designs of the N2-selective membrane are utilized for SNG separation. The two-stage membrane process feasibly recovers methane (CH4) at more than 95% (by mol) recovery with a H2 composition of ≤0.05% by m... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, distribution system, energy management, Optimization, smart home, smart transformer
The increased integration of Electric Vehicles (EVs) into the distribution network can create severe issues—especially when demand response programs and time-varying electricity prices are applied, EVs tend to charge during the off-peak time to minimize the electricity cost. Hence, another peak demand might be created, and other solutions are required. Many researchers tried to solve the problem; however, limitations exist because of the decentralized topology of the network. The system operator is not allowed to control the end-users’ load due to security and privacy issues. To overcome this situation, we propose a novel data-energy management algorithm on the transformer’s level that controls the power demand profiles of the householders and exchange energy between them without violating their privacy and security. Our method is compared to an existing one in the literature based on a decentralized control strategy. Simulations show that our approach has reduced the electricity cost... [more]

Keywords: Energy Efficiency, Modelling, Optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, shading condition, triple junction solar cell
A significant growth in PV (photovoltaic) system installations have been observed during the last decade. The PV array has a nonlinear output characteristic because of weather intermittency. Partial shading is an environmental phenomenon that causes multiple peaks in the power curve and has a negative effect on the efficiency of the conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods. This tends to have a substantial effect on the overall performance of the PV system. Therefore, to enhance the performance of the PV system under shading conditions, the global MPPT technique is mandatory to force the PV system to operate close to the global maximum. In this paper, for the first time, a stochastic fractal search (SFS) optimization algorithm is applied to solve the dilemma of tracking the global power of PV system based triple-junction solar cells under shading conditions. SFS has been nominated because it can converge to the best solution at a fast rate. Moreover, balance between exp... [more]

Keywords: distribution network utilisation, evolution strategy, network planning, no-load tap-changing transformers, optimisation
This paper proposes a method of determining the optimal tap settings for no-load distribution transformers with tap-changing capabilities that is practical to apply in real distribution networks. The risk of low voltage distribution networks violating voltage constraints is impacted by the increasing uptake of distributed energy resources and embedded generation. Some of this risk can be alleviated by suitably setting no-load transformer tap settings, however, modifying these taps requires customer outages and must be infrequent. Hence, loading over the entire year must be considered to account for seasonal variations when setting these taps optimally. These settings are determined using evolution strategy optimisation based on an average loading case. Monte Carlo simulations are used to calculate the probability that the terminal voltages on the distribution transformer secondary terminals violate the network voltage limits when the optimal set of taps for the average case is applied... Extracting maximum energy from photovoltaic (PV) systems at varying conditions is crucial. It represents a problem that is being addressed by researchers who are using several techniques to obtain optimal outcomes in real-life scenarios. Among the many techniques, Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is one category that is not extensively researched upon. MPPT uses mathematical models to achieve gradient optimisation in the context of PV panels. This study proposes an enhanced maximisation problem based on gradient optimisation techniques to achieve better performance. In the context of MPPT in photovoltaic panels, an equality restriction applies, which is solved by employing the Dual Lagrangian expression. Considering this dual problem and its mathematical form, the Nesterov Accelerated Gradient (NAG) framework is used. Additionally, since it is challenging to ascertain the step size, its approximate value is taken using the Adadelta approach. A basic MPPT framework, along with a DC-t... [more]

Cold-storage containers are widely used in cold-chain logistics transportation due to their energy saving, environmental protection, and low operating cost. The uniformity of temperature distribution is significant in agricultural-product storage and transportation. This paper explored temperature distribution in the container by numerical simulation, which included ventilation velocity and the fan location. Numerical model/numerical simulation showed good agreement with experimental data in terms of temporal and spatial air temperature distribution. Results showed that the cooling rate improved as velocity increased, and temperature at 45 min was the lowest, when velocity was 16 m/s. Temperature-distribution uniformity in the compartment became worse with the increase in ventilation velocity, but its lowest temperature decreased with a velocity increase. With regard to fan energy consumption, the cooling rate of the cooling module, and temperature-field distribution in the product are... [more]

We present a novel methodology for the control of power unit commitment in complex ship energy systems. The usage of this method is demonstrated with a case study, where measured data was used from a cruise ship operating in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. The ship’s energy system is conceptualized to feature a fuel cell and a battery along standard diesel generating sets for the purpose of reducing local emissions near coasts. The developed method is formulated as a model predictive control (MPC) problem, where a novel 2-stage predictive model is used to predict power demand, and a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is used to solve unit commitment according to the prediction. The performance of the methodology is compared to fully optimal control, which was simulated by optimizing unit commitment for entire measured power demand profiles of trips. As a result, it can be stated that the developed methodology achieves close to optimal unit commitment control for the con... [more]

Positive displacement machines have been identified as appropriate expanders for small-scale power generation systems such as Organic Rankine Cycles (ORCs). Screw expanders can operate with good efficiency in working fluids under both dry and two-phase conditions. Detailed understanding of the fluid expansion process is required to optimise the machine design and operation for specific applications, and accurate design tools are therefore essential. Using experimental data for air expansion, both CFD and chamber models have been applied to investigate the influence of port flow and leakage on the expansion process. Both models are shown to predict pressure variation and power output with good accuracy. The validated chamber model is then used to identify the optimal volume ratio and rotational speed for experimental conditions.

The United States Air Force has implemented a dispersed air base strategy to enhance mission effectiveness for near-peer conflicts. Asset dispersal places many smaller bases across a wide geographic area, which increases resupply requirements and logistical complexity. Hybrid energy systems reduce resupply requirements through sustainable, off-grid energy production. This paper presents a novel hybrid energy renewable delivery system (HERDS) model capable of (1) selecting the optimal hybrid energy system design that meets demand at the lowest net present cost and (2) optimizing the delivery of the selected system using existing Air Force cargo aircraft. The novelty of the model’s capabilities is displayed using Clark Air Base, Philippines as a case study. Keywords: efficiency, endoreversible thermodynamics, irreversibility, Optimization, piston motion optimization, power, stirling engine
The recuperation of otherwise lost waste heat provides a formidable way to decrease the primary energy consumption of many technical systems. A possible route to achieve that goal is through the use of Stirling engines, which have shown to be reliable and efficient devices. One can increase their performance by optimizing the piston motion. Here, it is investigated to which extent the cycle averaged power output can be increased by using a special class of adjustable sinusoidal motions (the AS class). In particular the influence of the regeneration effectiveness on the piston motion is examined. It turns out that with the optimized piston motion one can achieve performance gains for the power output of up to 50% depending on the loss mechanisms involved. A remarkable result is that the power output does not depend strongly on the limitations of the regenerator, in fact—depending on the loss terms—the influence of the regenerator practically vanishes.

Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) optimization algorithms provide accurate and clear solutions for Microgrid and Distributed Energy Resources projects. Full-scale optimization approaches optimize all time-steps of data sets (e.g., 8760 time-step and higher resolutions), incurring extreme and unpredictable run-times, often prohibiting such approaches for effective Microgrid designs. To reduce run-times down-sampling approaches exist. Given that the literature evaluates the full-scale and down-sampling approaches only for limited numbers of case studies, there is a lack of a more comprehensive study involving multiple Microgrids. This paper closes this gap by comparing results and run-times of a full-scale 8760 h time-series MILP to a peak preserving day-type MILP for 13 real Microgrid projects. The day-type approach reduces the computational time between 85% and almost 100% (from 2 h computational time to less than 1 min). At the same time the day-type approach keeps the objective... [more]

As the use of sewage sludge as a fertilizer in agriculture is increasingly restricted in the European Union, other ways to utilize this waste stream need to be developed. Sewage sludge is an ideal input material for the process of hydrothermal carbonization, as it can convert wet biomass into a solid energy carrier with increased mechanical dewaterability. Digested sewage sludge was hydrothermally carbonized at 160−200 °C for 30−60 min with initial pH levels of 1.93−8.08 to determine optimal reaction conditions for enhanced dewaterability and phosphorus release into the liquid phase. Design of experiments was used to develop response surface models, which can be applied to optimize the process conditions. For optimal dewaterability and phosphorus release, low initial pH values (pH 1.93) and mild temperatures around 170 °C are favorable. Because holding time had no statistically relevant effect, a dependency of reaction time was investigated. Though it did not yield substantially differ... [more]
