Keywords: distributed generation, electric vehicles, energy management, Optimization, smart grid
Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and Distributed Generation (DG) are topics in a large number of recent research works. Moreover, given the increasing adoption of EVs, high capacity EV batteries can be used as ESS, as most vehicles remain idle for long periods during work or home parking. However, the high EV penetration introduces some issues related to the charging power requirements, thereby increasing the peak demand for microgrids where EV chargers are installed. In addition, photovoltaic distributed generation is becoming another issue to deal with in EV charging microgrids. Therefore, this new scenario requires an Energy Management System (EMS) able to deal with charging demand, as well as with generation intermittency. This paper presents an EMS strategy for Microgrids that contain an EV parking lot (EVM), Photovoltaic (PV) arrays, and dynamic loads connected to the grid considering a Point of Common Coupling (PCC). The EVM-EMS utilizes the projections of future PV generation and f... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery charging, coalition, electric vehicles, Optimization, Shapley value
The number of electric vehicles (EV) in the world has been increasing and is gaining momentum. The large-scale use of EVs in public life has initiated the need to establish EV battery charging services within the power system. Currently, EVs serve as a transportation tool and also as a flexible load. This publication examines the possibility of the owner of an electric vehicle choosing a battery recharging point, as well as of the involvement of several decision makers in the selection of a charging schedule. This problem is important because we assume that a significant proportion of EVs mainly use two parking spaces, one located close to the place of residence and another close to the workplace. We accept and prove that a car charging station can be created by the employer (company) and implemented in the best interests of the employer and the employee (EV owner). For that, a coalition between the company and the EV owner has to be formed. To support rational decisions, this study so... [more]

Power system parameter matching is one of the key technologies in the development of hybrid electric vehicles. The power source is the key component of the power system which composed of engine, motor, and battery. Reasonable power source parameters are conducive to improve the power, fuel economy, and emission performance of vehicles. In this paper, regarding the problem that the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) parameter matching needs to weigh different design objectives, a multi-objective optimization and matching method based on a genetic algorithm is proposed. The vehicle dynamic model is established based on MATLAB/Simulink (Mathworks in Natick, Massachusetts, USA), and the feasibility of the model is verified by simulation. The main performance parameters of the power source are matched by theoretical analysis, and the PHEV integrated optimization simulation platform is established based on Isight(Dassault Systemes in Paris, France) and MALTAB/Simulink. Keywords: aggregator, energy management system, interconnected buildings, multi-level, Optimization, renewable resources, smart grid
The electrical grid has been changing in the last decade due to the presence of renewables, distributed generation, storage systems, microgrids, and electric vehicles. The introduction of new legislation and actors in the smart grid’s system opens new challenges for the activities of companies, and for the development of new energy management systems, models, and methods. A new optimization-based bi-level architecture is proposed for an aggregator of consumers in the balancing market, in which incentives for local users (i.e., microgrids, buildings) are considered, as well as flexibility and a fair assignment in reducing the overall load. At the lower level, consumers try to follow the aggregator’s reference values and perform demand response programs to contain their costs and satisfy demands. The approach is applied to a real case study.

Keywords: Air-Conditioning, desert climate, Elman Neural Networks, On-Off control, Optimization
Being reliant on Air Conditioning (AC) throughout the majority of the year, desert countries with extremely hot weather conditions such as Qatar are facing challenges in lowering weariness cost due to AC On-Off switching while maintaining an adequate level of comfort under a wide-range of ambient temperature variations. To address these challenges, this paper investigates an optimal On-Off control strategy to improve the AC utilization process. To overcome complexities of online optimization, a Elman Neural Networks (NN)-based estimator is proposed to estimate real values of the outdoor temperature, and make off-line optimization available. By looking up the optimum values solved from an off-line optimization scheme, the proposed control solutions can adaptively regulate the indoor temperature regardless of outdoor temperature variations. In addition, a cost function of multiple objectives, which consider both Coefficient of Performance (COP), and AC compressor weariness due to On-Off... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: financial incentives, microgrids, Optimization, policy instruments, subsidies
Microgrids constitute an attractive solution for the electrification of areas where grid extension is not technically feasible or prohibitively expensive. In recent years, national governments have implemented various support policies to encourage the deployment of renewable energy systems (RES) and microgrid hybrid-powered systems. A fundamental aspect during the design and disposition of these types of units is the determination of the optimal configuration and sizing of each power generation component. Furthermore, the optimal design of microgrids is strongly dependent on technological parameters, local meteorological conditions, among other factors. In this context, this paper investigates the effects of different policy measures on the optimal configuration of microgrids functioning in islanded mode. A computable model is employed to carry out a set of sensitivity analyses and assess the impact of capital and fuel subsidies on the levelized cost of electricity of various systems.... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: charging stations, daily activity chains, electric vehicles, intelligent transportation systems, ITS, Optimization
The focus of this article is to introduce a method for the optimization of daily activity chains of travelers who use Electric Vehicles (EVs) in an urban environment. An approach has been developed based on activity-based modeling and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) framework to calculate a suitable schedule of activities, taking into account the locations of activities, modes of transport, and the time of attendance to each activity. The priorities of the travelers concerning the spatial and temporal flexibility were considered, as well as the constraints that are related to the limited range of the EVs, the availability of Charging Stations (CS), and the elevation of the road network. In order to model real travel behavior, two charging scenarios were realized. In the first case, the traveler stays in the EV at the CS, and in the second case, the traveler leaves the EV to charge at the CS while conducting another activity at a nearby location. Through a series of tests on synthetic activi... [more]

Keywords: Koelreuteria paniculata biodiesel, non-edible feedstock, Optimization, physicochemical characterization, transesterification
Biodiesel is a clean and renewable fuel, which is considered as the best alternative to diesel fuel, but the feedstock contributes more than 70% of the cost. The most important constituent essential for biodiesel development is to explore cheap feedstock with high oil content. In this work, we found novel non-edible plant seeds of Koelreuteria paniculata (KP) with high oil contents of 28−30 wt.% and low free fatty acid contents (0.91%), which can serve as a promising feedstock for biodiesel production. KP seed oil can convert into biodiesel/fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) by base-catalyzed transesterification with the highest biodiesel production of 95.2% after an optimization process. We obtained the optimal transesterification conditions, i.e., oil/methanol ratio (6:1), catalyst concentration (0.32), reaction temperature (65 °C), stirring rate (700 rpm), and reaction time (80 min). The physico-chemical properties and composition of the FAME were investigated and compared with minera... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: induction motor, Optimization, parameter determination, single cage model, stochastic search, variable domain constraints
This paper deals with the implementation of a new technique of stochastic search to find the best set of parameters in a mathematical model, applied to the single cage (SC) model of the induction motor (IM). The technique includes a new strategy to generate variable constraints of the domain, seven error functions, weight for the operating zones of the IM, and multi-objective functions. The results are validated with experimental data of the torque and current in an IM, and show better fitting to the experimental curves compared with the results of two different techniques, one deterministic and the other one stochastic. The results obtained allow us to conclude that the best set of parameters for the model depends on the weights assigned to the objective functions and to the operating zones.

One of the main tasks of the Power System Operators is to ensure a proper, safe, and trouble-free operation and development of power grids. Growth of power system is inseparably linked to a connection of both renewable and classical new energy sources. For network operators and potential investors, it is essential to know the place and volume of generation capacity that can be connected to the grid. A publication of such data is currently a legal obligation for many operators. This paper proposes a method of determining the bus connection capacity in power grid of any type with the use of black-box optimization. Calculations and analyses were performed with a full, nonlinear model of the analyzed network. Obtained results show the effectiveness of this method for both single and multiple nodes in any configuration. All the constraints relevant for the proper and safe system operation, such as bus voltages, line loads, and short-circuit currents, both in a steady-state and (n-1) conting... [more]

Keywords: CAES, guide vane outlet flow angle, Optimization, preliminary design, radial turbine, rotor loss
The loading-to-flow diagram is a widely used classical method for the preliminary design of radial turbines. This study improves this method to optimize the design of radial turbines in the early design phase under variable operating conditions. The guide vane outlet flow angle is a key factor affecting the off-design performance of the radial turbine. To optimize the off-design performance of radial turbines in the early design phase, we propose a hypothesis that uses the ratio of the mean velocity of the fluid relative to the rotor passage with respect to the circumferential velocity of the rotor as an indicator to indirectly and qualitatively estimate the rotor loss, as it plays a key role in the off-design efficiency. Theoretical analysis of rotor loss characteristics under different types of variable operating conditions shows that a smaller design value of guide vane outlet flow angle results in a better off-design performance in the case of a reduced mass flow. In contrast, radi... [more]

In this study, a type-2 fuzzy chance-constrained fractional integrated programming (T2FCFP) approach is developed for the planning of sustainable management in an electric power system (EPS) under complex uncertainties. Through simultaneously coupling mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), chance-constrained stochastic programming (CCSP), and type-2 fuzzy mathematical programming (T2FMP) techniques into a fractional programming (FP) framework, T2FCFP can tackle dual objective problems of uncertain parameters with both type-2 fuzzy characteristics and stochastic effectively and enhance the robustness of the obtained decisions. T2FCFP has been applied to a case study of a typical electric power system planning to demonstrate these advantages, where issues of clean energy utilization, air-pollutant emissions mitigation, mix ratio of renewable energy power generation in the entire energy supply, and the displacement efficiency of electricity generation technologies by renewable energy ar... Keywords: commercial turbine selection, Genetic Algorithm, hub height variation, Optimization, upgrade, wind farm layout
The problem of optimally increasing the size of existing wind farms has not been investigated in the literature. In this paper, a proposed wind farm layout upgrade by adding different (in type and/or hub height) commercial turbines to an existing farm is introduced and optimized. Three proposed upgraded layouts are considered: internal grid, external grid, and external unstructured. The manufacturer’s power curve and a general representation for thrust coefficient are used in power and wake calculations, respectively. A simple field-based model is implemented and both offshore and onshore conditions are considered. A genetic algorithm is used for the optimization. The trade-off range between energy production and cost of energy is investigated by considering three objective functions, individually: (1) annual energy production; (2) cost of added energy; and (3) cost of total energy. The proposed upgraded layouts are determined for the Horns Rev 1 offshore wind farm. The results showed... [more]

Energy Management System (EMS) optimal strategies have shown great potential to match the fluctuating energy production from renewables with an electric demand profile, which opens the way to a deeper penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the electric system. At a single building level, however, handling of different energy sources to fulfill both thermal and electric requirements is still a challenging task. The present work describes the potential of an EMS based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategies to both maximize the RES exploitation and serve as an ancillary service for the grid when a Heat Pump (HP) coupled with a Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is used in a residential Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES). Cost savings up to 30% as well as a reduction of the purchased energy unbalance with the grid (about 15%−20% depending on the season) have been achieved. Moreover, the thermal energy storage leads to a more efficient and reliable use of the Heat Pump by gen... [more]

Keywords: disruptions, Energy Efficiency, environmental regulations, liner shipping, Optimization, vessel schedule recovery
Liner shipping is a vital component of the world trade. Liner shipping companies usually operate fixed routes and announce their schedules. However, disruptions in sea and/or at ports affect the planned vessel schedules. Moreover, some liner shipping routes pass through the areas, designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as emission control areas (ECAs). IMO imposes restrictions on the type of fuel that can be used by vessels within ECAs. The vessel schedule recovery problem becomes more complex when disruptions occur at such liner shipping routes, as liner shipping companies must comply with the IMO regulations. This study presents a novel mixed-integer nonlinear mathematical model for the green vessel schedule recovery problem, which considers two recovery strategies, including vessel sailing speed adjustment and port skipping. The objective aims to minimize the total profit loss, endured by a given liner shipping company due to disruptions in the planned operation... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: hybridization, MENA region, Optimization, solar power plants
Hybrid concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) and photovoltaic (PV) plants are gaining relevance because they combine their advantages: easy installation and low cost of PV plus dispatchability of CSP. This paper presents results of a techno-economic modelling of this hybrid approach for sites in Jordan, Tunisia and Algeria. Local boundary conditions such as meteorology, cost and electricity demand have been considered to determine the best configurations for these three sites. Different CSP technologies with thermal energy storage have been selected. Hybridization with natural gas has also been included. The optimization is done towards minimizing the LCOE while covering the electrical demand 24/7. Results are presented for different CO2 emissions ranges, as the use of fossil fuel has a strong impact on the LCOE and for environmental reasons, it may be preferred to be kept to a minimum. For most of the cases analyzed, the fraction of energy from PV that leads to minimum LCOE is lower... [more]

Renewable energy is increasingly mobilizing more investment around the globe. However, there has been little attention to evaluating economic and regulatory (E&R) uncertainties, despite their enormous impact on the project cashflows. Consequently, this review analyzes, classifies, and discusses 130 articles dealing with the design of renewable energy projects under E&R uncertainties. After performing a survey and identifying the selected manuscripts, and the few previous reviews on the matter, the following innovative categorization is designed: sources of uncertainty, uncertainty characterization methods, problem formulations, solution methods, and regulatory frameworks. The classification reveals that electricity price is the most considered source of uncertainty, often alone, despite the existence of six other equally influential groups of E&R uncertainties. In addition, real options and optimization arise as the two main approaches researchers use to solve problems in energy system... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dc–dc power conversion, dual active bridge (DAB), leakage inductance, modular multilevel converter (MMC), Optimization
The leakage inductance of the transformer in a dual active bridge (DAB) dc−dc converter directly impacts the ac current waveforms and the power factor; thus, it can be considered a design requirement for the transformer. In the existing literature, a choice is made to either ensure soft switching in nominal power or to minimize the RMS current of the transformer. The inductance is typically obtained using optimization procedures. Implementing these optimizations is time-consuming, which can be avoided if a closed-form equation is derived for the optimum leakage inductance. In this paper, analytical formulas are derived to estimate the desired leakage inductance such that the highest RMS value of the current in the operation region of a DAB is kept to its minimum value. The accuracy and sensitivity of the analytical solutions are evaluated. It is shown that in a large design domain, the solution for the YY-connected MFT has a less than 3% error compared to the results obtained from an o... [more]
