Optimal Dynamic Scheduling of Electric Vehicles in a Parking Lot Using Particle Swarm Optimization and Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: charging cost, dynamic charging, economics, electric vehicles, Optimization, parking lots, static charging
In this paper, the optimal dynamic scheduling of electric vehicles (EVs) in a parking lot (PL) is proposed to minimize the charging cost. In static scheduling, the PL operator can make the optimal scheduling if the demand, arrival, and departure time of EVs are known well in advance. If not, a static charging scheme is not feasible. Therefore, dynamic charging is preferred. A dynamic scheduling scheme means the EVs may come and go at any time, i.e., EVs’ arrival is dynamic in nature. The EVs may come to the PL with prior appointments or not. Therefore, a PL operator requires a mechanism to charge the EVs that arrive with or without reservation, and the demand for EVs is unknown to the PL operator. In general, the PL uses the first-in-first serve (FIFS) method for charging the EVs. The well-known optimization techniques such as particle swarm optimization and shuffled frog leaping algorithms are used for the EVs’ dynamic scheduling scheme to minimize the grid’s charging cost. Moreover,... [more]

Efficient Integration of Machine Learning into District Heating Predictive Models
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: district heating, dynamics, Machine Learning, Modelling, Optimization, pipes, smart systems
Modern control strategies for district-level heating and cooling supply systems pose a difficult challenge. In order to integrate a wide range of hot and cold sources, these new systems will rely heavily on accumulation and much lower operating temperatures. This means that predictive models advising the control strategy must take into account long-lasting thermal effects but must not be computationally too expensive, because the control would not be possible in practice. This paper presents a simple but powerful systematic approach to reducing the complexity of individual components of such models. It makes it possible to combine human engineering intuition with machine learning and arrive at comprehensive and accurate models. As an example, a simple steady-state heat loss of buried pipes is extended with dynamics observed in a much more complex model. The results show that the process converges quickly toward reasonable solutions. The new auto-generated model performs 5 × 104 times f... [more]

Optimal Siting and Sizing of Wayside Energy Storage Systems in a D.C. Railway Line
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy storage system (ESS), net present value (NPV), Optimization, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, railway network, regenerative braking, siting, sizing
The paper proposes an optimal siting and sizing methodology to design an energy storage system (ESS) for railway lines. The scope is to maximize the economic benefits. The problem of the optimal siting and sizing of an ESS is addressed and solved by a software developed by the authors using the particle swarm algorithm, whose objective function is based on the net present value (NPV). The railway line, using a standard working day timetable, has been simulated in order to estimate the power flow between the trains finding the siting and sizing of electrical substations and storage systems suitable for the railway network. Numerical simulations have been performed to test the methodology by assuming a new-generation of high-performance trains on a 3 kV direct current (d.c.) railway line. The solution found represents the best choice from an economic point of view and which allows less energy to be taken from the primary network.

Cost-Effective Outage Management in Smart Grid under Single, Multiple, and Critical Fault Conditions through Teaching−Learning Algorithm
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: capacitor placement, DGs, distribution system, faults, Optimization, service restoration, teaching–learning algorithm
A distribution system becomes the most essential part of a power system as it links the utility and utility customers. Under abnormal conditions of the system, a definitive goal of the utility is to provide continuous power supply to the customers. This demands a fast restoration process and provision of optimal solutions without violating the power system operational constraints. The main objective of the proposed work is to reduce the service restoration cost (SRC) along with the elimination of the out-of-service loads. In addition, this work concentrates on the minimal usage and finding of optimal locations for additional equipment, such as capacitor placement (CP) and distributed generators (DGs). This paper proposes a two-stage strategy, namely, the service restoration phase and optimization phase. The first phase ensures the restoration of the system from the fault condition, and the second phase identifies the optimal solution with reconfiguration, CP, and DG placement. The opti... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: blockchain, differential evolution, microgrid, Optimization, power loss, reactive power
The energy market is gradually changing from centralized trading to peer-to-peer trading due to the tremendous increase in a microgrid with green energy resources. When more generating units are included in the microgrid, the possibilities of more reactive power flows exist in the system that leads to high transmission loss which has to be optimized. The reactive power is one of the essential ancillary services in the microgrid towards preserving the voltage in the transmission and distribution line. The major contribution of the paper is towards managing the ancillary service in the distributed energy network economically and technically. This study aims to estimate and optimize the power loss, reactive power, and price management as well. Towards optimization, the self-balanced differential evolution algorithm (SBDE) is used in this study. A distribution system operator is involved in coordinating the sellers and buyers. Impact of Fan Airflow of IT Equipment on Thermal Environment and Energy Consumption of a Data Center
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: data center, energy consumption, HVAC, ITE fan speed, Optimization, thermal management
Energy-saving in regard to heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) in data centers is strongly required. Therefore, to improve the operating efficiency of the cooling equipment and extend the usage time of the economizer used for cooling information-technology equipment (ITE) in a data center, it is often the case that a high air-supply temperature within the range in which the ITE can be sufficiently cooled is selected. In the meantime, it is known that when the ambient temperature of the ITE rises, the speed of the built-in cooling fan increases. Acceleration of the built-in fan is thought to affect the cooling performance and energy consumption of the data center. Therefore, a method for predicting the temperature of a data center—which simply correlates supply-air temperature with ITE inlet temperature by utilizing existing indicators, such as air-segregation efficiency (ASE)—is proposed in this study. Moreover, a method for optimizing the total energy consumption of a da... [more]

Optimization of a PV-Wind Hybrid Power Supply Structure with Electrochemical Storage Intended for Supplying a Load with Known Characteristics
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Batteries, Energy Storage, hybrid systems, LCOE, off-grid reliability, Optimization, renewable energy sources
An important aspect of the off-grid utilization of hybrid generation systems is the integration of energy storage facilities into their structures, which allows for improved power supply reliability. However, this results in a significant increase in the cost of such systems. Therefore, it is justified to use optimization resulting in the minimization of the selected economic indicator taking into account the most important technical constraints. For this reason, this work proposes an algorithm to optimize the structure of a hybrid off-grid power distribution system (with electrochemical energy storage), designed to supply a load with known daily energy demand. The authors recommend genetic algorithm utilization as well as a modified criterion for evaluating the quality of solutions based on the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) index. Several technical and economic analyses were presented, including unit costs, power distribution of the wind and solar sections, nominal battery capacity,... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrical energy efficiency, fuel-saving, Optimization, proton-exchange membrane fuel cell, safe and healthy strategy
In this paper, the optimal and safe operation of a hybrid power system based on a fuel cell system and renewable energy sources is analyzed. The needed DC power resulting from the power flow balance on the DC bus is ensured by the FC system via the air regulator or the fuel regulator controlled by the power-tracking control reference or both regulators using a switched mode of the above-mentioned reference. The optimal operation of a fuel cell system is ensured by a search for the maximum of multicriteria-based optimization functions focused on fuel economy under perturbation, such as variable renewable energy and dynamic load on the DC bus. Two search controllers based on the global extremum seeking scheme are involved in this search via the remaining fueling regulator and the boost DC−DC converter. Thus, the fuel economy strategies based on the control of the air regulator and the fuel regulator, respectively, on the control of both fueling regulators are analyzed in this study. The... [more]

Heuristic Optimization of Overloading Due to Electric Vehicles in a Low Voltage Grid
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric vehicles, heuristic, low voltage, network, Optimization
It is important to understand the effect of increasing electric vehicles (EV) penetrations on the existing electricity transmission infrastructure and to find ways to mitigate it. While, the easiest solution is to opt for equipment upgrades, the potential for reducing overloading, in terms of voltage drops, and line loading by way of optimization of the locations at which EVs can charge, is significant. To investigate this, a heuristic optimization approach is proposed to optimize EV charging locations within one feeder, while minimizing nodal voltage drops, cable loading and overall cable losses. The optimization approach is compared to typical unoptimized results of a monte-carlo analysis. The results show a reduction in peak line loading in a typical benchmark 0.4 kV by up to 10%. Further results show an increase in voltage available at different nodes by up to 7 V in the worst case and 1.5 V on average. Optimization for a reduction in transmission losses shows insignificant savings... [more]

Optimisation of Direct Battery Thermal Management for EVs Operating in Low-Temperature Climates
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic programming, electric vehicle, heat pump, optimisation, thermal management
Electric vehicles (EVs) experience a range reduction at low temperatures caused by the impact of cabin heating and a reduction in lithium ion performance. Heat pump equipped vehicles have been shown to reduce heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) consumption and improve low ambient temperature range. Heating the electric battery, to improve its low temperature performance, leads to a reduction in heat availability for the cabin. In this paper, dynamic programming is used to find the optimal battery heating trajectory which can optimise the vehicle’s control for either cabin comfort or battery performance and, therefore, range. Using the strategy proposed in this research, a 6.2% increase in range compared to no battery heating and 5.5% increase in thermal comfort compared to full battery heating was achieved at an ambient temperature at −7 °C.

Biomass to Syngas: Modified Non-Stoichiometric Thermodynamic Models for the Downdraft Biomass Gasification
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass gasification, Modelling, non-stoichiometric, Optimization, thermodynamics
Biomass gasification is the most reliable thermochemical conversion technology for the conversion of biomass into gaseous fuels such as H2, CO, and CH4. The performance of a gasification process can be estimated using thermodynamic equilibrium models. This type of model generally assumes the system reaches equilibrium, while in reality the system may only approach equilibrium leading to some errors between experimental and model results. In this study non-stoichiometric equilibrium models are modified and improved with correction factors inserted into the design equations so that when the Gibbs free energy is minimized model predictions will more closely match experimental values. The equilibrium models are implemented in MatLab and optimized based on experimental values from the literature using the optimization toolbox. The modified non-stoichiometric models are shown to be more accurate than unmodified models based on the calculated root mean square error values. These models can be... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: biomass energy, efficiency, Optimization, Supply Chain, transportation
The biomass industry is growing due to the current search for greener and more sustainable alternatives to fossil energy sources. However, this industry, due to its singularity, presents several challenges and disadvantages related to the transportation of raw materials, with the large volumes that are usually involved. This project aimed to address this internal logistics situation in torrefied biomass pellets production with two different biomass storage parks, located in Portugal. The main park receives raw material coming directly from the source and stores it in large amounts as a backup and strategic storage park. The second park, with smaller dimensions, precedes the production unit and must be stocked daily. Therefore, a fleet of transport units with self-unloading cranes is required to help to unload the biomass at the main park and transport the raw material from this park to the one preceding the production unit. The Altai-Uliastai regional power system (AURPS) is a regional power system radially interconnected to the power system of Mongolia. The 110 kV interconnection is exceptionally long and susceptible to frequent trips because of weather conditions. The load-rich and low-inertia AURPS must be islanded during interconnection outages, and the under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) scheme must act to ensure secure operation.
