Novel Interleaved High Gain Boost Converter Using Switched Capacitor
Girish Ganesan Ramanathan, Naomitsu Urasaki
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC–DC, Energy Conversion, interleaved, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, switched capacitor
The increase in global energy demand has led to increased research in harvesting solar energy. Solar energy is widely used in homes, electric vehicles and is a great solution to power remote areas. DC−DC converters are essential in extracting power from solar panels. One of the main problems in designing converters for solar energy applications is boosting the low output voltage of the solar panel to meaningful levels. While there are several topologies to achieve high gain, some of the problems faced by them are the extreme duty ratio, complex design and discontinuous input current. This paper presents a novel topology that uses an interleaved input, a voltage lift capacitor and a hybrid switched capacitor network to achieve high gain without an extreme duty ratio or bulky magnetics. The proposed converter is controlled using a microcontroller which regulates the output voltage. The voltage lift capacitor and the switched capacitor network enhances the voltage gain over a conventional... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy Conversion, energy system model, energy transition
We present an easily accessible model for dispatch and expansion planning of the German multi-modal energy system from today until 2050. The model can be used with low efforts while comparing favorably with historic data and other studies of future developments. More specifically, the model is based on a linear programming partial equilibrium framework and uses a compact set of technologies to ease the comprehension for new modelers. It contains all equations and parameters needed, with the data sources and model assumptions documented in detail. All code and data are openly accessible and usable. The model can reproduce today’s energy mix and its CO2 emissions with deviations below 10%. The generated energy transition path, for an 80% CO2 reduction scenario until 2050, is consistent with leading studies on this topic. Our work thus summarizes the key insights of previous works and can serve as a validated and ready-to-use platform for other modelers to examine additional hypotheses.

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption model, CO2 sequestration, Energy Conversion, particle size, temperature
CO2 sequestration in coal is mainly attributed to adsorption. The adsorption experiments of CO2 were conducted at injection pressures ranging from 1 to 3 MPa on coal samples with five kinds of particle sizes. The fitting degree of four classical adsorption models to experimental adsorption data was systematically compared. The adsorption properties of CO2 were comprehensively discussed. The temperature changes of coal samples at different positions during CO2 adsorption were measured by using the improved adsorption tank, and then the energy conversion law was obtained. The results showed increasing gas injection pressure can effectively increase the adsorption capacity of CO2 on coal samples. The BET equation had the best fitting accuracy for CO2 adsorption on various size coal samples. There was a significant exothermic effect during CO2 adsorption and storage. With the rise of injection pressure, the peak value of the rising temperature of coal samples increased, but the change rate... [more]

Keywords: Energy Conversion, fouling, fouling mitigation, ion exchange membrane
In this study, three different environmentally friendly fouling mitigation technologies are suggested and are investigated in reverse electrodialysis (RED) to develop the most appropriate fouling mitigation technology for RED: applying direct current, flowing a solution with high salt concentration, and periodically switching river and seawater streams in RED. The quantitative level of anion exchange membrane fouling mitigation is evaluated in terms of the power density and the amount of power generation of RED. Applying a direct current electric field with higher voltage than 8 V was not allowed for fouling mitigation in the two-cell-pair bench RED stack due to decomposition of the redox couple. In comparison of the RED operations with two different fouling mitigation methods using firstly 40-min power generation during in-operation and 40-min fouling mitigation stage during out-of-operation as a cycle for 80 min and secondly 80-min forward power generation and 80-min backward power g... Recent research has examined the possibility of recovering energy from mechanical vibration induced by a vehicle shock absorber using piezoelectric and electromagnetic transducers. In terms of automotive applications, piezoelectric vibration energy harvesting shows promise for recapturing some (even if small) amounts of vehicle vibration energy, which would otherwise be wasted through the vehicle dampers. Functional materials, such as piezoelectric materials, are capable of converting mechanical energy into useful electrical energy and vice versa. In this paper, an innovative rotational piezoelectric vibration-energy-harvesting device is presented that employs a magnetic coupling mechanism and provides robust performance over a range of frequencies. The piezoelectric energy harvester is driven by a unidirectional suspension system. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the performance of the manufactured prototype. We observed no damage to the prototype after operating... [more]

Most primary energy sources, such as the fossil fuels of oil, coal, and natural gas, produce waste heat. Recycling of this unused thermal energy is necessary in order to increase the efficiency of usage. Thermoelectric (TE) conversion technologies, by which waste heat is directly converted into electricity, have been extensively studied, and the development of these technologies has continued. TE power-generation has attracted significant attention for use in self-powered wireless sensors, which are important for our increasingly sophisticated information society. For the middle-temperature range (i.e., 600−900 K), with applications such as automobiles, intensive studies of high-performance TE materials have been conducted. In this study, we review our recent experimental and theoretical studies on alkaline-earth silicide Mg2Si TE materials, which consist of nontoxic abundant earth elements. We demonstrate improvements in TE performance brought about by lightly doping Mg2Si with isoele... [more]

The optimal allocation of protective devices is a serious issue in an electrical power system; in order to reduce the possibility of faults, the protection devices should be optimally placed. The paper presents a continuous genetic algorithm (CGA) for the optimal allocation of directional relays for the efficient energy minimization in a radial distribution system (DG). The algorithm is flexible to use for the changes and improvements in the optimal location for a DG unit and can optimize the energy consumption in the radial distribution system. The proposed algorithm has been implemented on IEEE 33 and 69-bus system using MATLAB (R2014b, MathWorks). Low energy consumption is a common design objective in an energy-constrained distribution system. Engineers, power utilities, and network operators can profit from the proposed methodology to enhance the use of DG in distribution networks.

Keywords: active filters, Energy Conversion, evaluation of compensation from technical and financial points of view, new indices for financial compensation efficiency, power control, power harmonic filters
The paper approaches some theories related to certain power components and power quality indices of active filtering. A brief review of the specialty literature tied to technical aspects of compensation based on active filtering is provided. Following that, the steps of a design created by the authors to perform active filtering with a shunt filter are provided. The developed filtering system was tested and experimental data were acquired on a test stand for different operational modes. The data acquired with and without filtering were compared in order to evaluate the filter efficiency. Data were analyzed and observations were made relative to the limits of one of the analyzed theories. It was concluded that another theory has to be used in order to define powers and indices for the quality of power/energy. The evaluation of compensation was made from a technical point of view, according to the standards in force for the domain of power/energy quality. It was noticed that electromagne... [more]

Keywords: effectiveness, efficiency, Energy Conversion, entropy, kinetic energy harvesters
Electrostatic energy harvesters convert kinetic energy into electrical energy via variable capacitors. Efforts to improve their power output are hampered by a lack of understanding of the fundamental limit for energy conversion efficiency. In heat engines, the theoretical limit of conversion efficiency is intrinsically related to entropy and the second law of thermodynamics. Laying the foundation for similar concepts for kinetic energy harvesters may be necessary for establishing a conversion efficiency limit. Thus, the mixing entropy concept is borrowed from statistical mechanics and is adapted here, for the first time, to characterize the energy transfer between coupled mechanical−electrical oscillators. The investigated system is composed of a spring-mass coupled to an inductance-capacitor circuit via a variable capacitor. Combining the two subsystems (electrical and mechanical) generates entropy, referred to as mixing entropy. A non-dimensional study of the governing equations of t... [more]

While world energy demand has certainly decreased with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the need has been significantly on the rise since 2021, all as the world’s fossil fuel resources are depleting; it is widely accepted that these resources emit greenhouse gases (GHG), which are the leading cause for the climate crisis. The main contributors to global warming are manufacturing, energy, and agriculture. The agricultural sector is composed of diversified and potential mobilizable sources of waste which can become an attractive alternative to fossil fuels for energy production, and thus sequester and use carbon. Therefore, a paradigm shift towards more sustainable energy alternatives, efficient waste management, and new technologies is necessary. One good solution is the energetic valorization of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) which can also originate from agricultural wastes. The biomass consists of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, which are sources of fermentable su... [more]

In this paper, a two-dimensional axisymmetric module of gas arc extinguishing was simulated using energy balance theories. We used simulation to study the energy distribution change during the gas arc-extinguishing process. We built a lightning impulse current experimental platform according to the IEC standard, and experiments verified the preliminary conclusions of the simulation. Comparison curves of the experimental data and simulation calculations were drawn in the range of 20 kV to 70 kV. Simulation and experimental results showed that the arc-extinguishing ability of long-gap gas arcs is negatively correlated with voltage level and positively correlated with distance. Furthermore, within the allowable range of conditions, increasing the length of the chamber rather than shortening it helps to extinguish the arc more effectively and quickly.

Keywords: Energy Conversion, hydrogen energy, methanol steam reforming, thermal management and control, waste heat recovery
Waste heat recovery was considered as a promising candidate for energy conservation and emission reduction. Methanol steam reforming was considered to be an effective means for hydrogen production because of its advantages. In this work, a micro reactor was constructed and thermoelectric generation coupled with hydrogen production from methanol steam reforming was innovatively used to recycle waste heat, which was simulated by hot air from a hot air gun. The waste heat was converted into electricity and hydrogen at the same time. The characteristic of thermoelectric generation coupled with methanol steam reforming was investigated. It was experimentally verified that both the hydrogen production rate and methanol conversion increased with the increasing inlet temperature, but thermal efficiency increased firstly and then decreased with the increasing temperature. The methanol steam reforming could effectively maintain cold side temperature distribution of thermoelectric generation. In... [more]

The application of expansion turbines at natural gas pressure reduction stations (PRS) is considered in order to recover energy contained in the natural gas. This energy is irretrievably lost at the reduction stations which use the traditional pressure reducer. Expanders allow for the electricity production for PRS own needs and for resale. The paper presents an analysis of the possibility of using turboexpanders at PRS in Poland. Authors performed static simulations for the assumed data sets and dynamic simulations for annual data from selected representative natural gas reduction and measurement stations. Energy balances are presented for the discussed scenarios that compare the energy requirements of natural gas pressure reduction stations which use a classic pressure reducer or turboexpander (TE). Using static simulations, authors investigated whether the use of a turboexpander is economically justified for the case if it is used only to supply the reduction station with electricit... [more]

Collisions between ships and offshore platforms frequently occur, with severe consequences. Predicting the collision depth under different conditions is very important to evaluate the severity of the consequences. Considering the time-consuming numerical simulation problem and the accuracy problems of existing approximation algorithms, this paper proposes a comprehensive approach to estimating penetration depths by obtaining two collision coefficients for specific collision structures based on the partial results of numerical simulations and simplified theoretical analysis. In this study, the collision process between a supply ship with a transverse framing stern and an offshore semi-platform was first numerically simulated based on the explicit dynamic method. The changes in ship velocity, impact force, and energy conversion before and after the collision processes were obtained through numerical simulations of the collisions with different speeds and angles. Keywords: Energy Conversion, flow characteristics, impulse water turbine, runner domain
The impulse water turbine is a promising energy conversion device that can be used as mechanical power or a micro hydro generator, and its application can effectively ease the current energy crisis. This paper aims to clarify the mechanism of liquid acting on runner blades, the hydraulic performance, and energy conversion characteristics in the runner domain of an impulse water turbine with a splitter blade by using experimental tests and numerical simulations. The runner was divided into seven areas along the flow direction, and the power variation in the runner domain was analyzed to reflect its energy conversion characteristics. The obtained results indicate that the critical area of the runner for doing the work is in the front half of the blades, while the rear area of the blades does relatively little work and even consumes the mechanical energy of the runner to produce negative work. The high energy area is concentrated in the flow passage facing the nozzle. The energy is gradua... [more]

The structural and optimal operation of an Energy Hub (EH) has a tremendous influence on the hub’s performance and reliability. This paper envisions an innovative methodology that prominently increases the synergy between structural and operational optimization and targets system cost affordability. The generalized energy system structure is presented theoretically with all selective hub sub-modules, including electric heater (EHe) and solar sources block sub-modules. To minimize energy usage cost, an energy hub is proposed that consists of 12 kinds of elements (i.e., energy resources, conversion, and storage functions) and is modeled mathematically in a General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS), which indicates the optimal hub structure’s corresponding elements with binary variables (0, 1). Simulation results contrast with 144 various scenarios established in all 144 categories of hub structures, in which for each scenario the corresponding optimal operation cost is previously calculat... Keywords: bidirectional DC/DC converter, chaotic modulation, electric and hybrid vehicles, Energy Conversion, shifted-phase angle based control
Three-port isolated (TPI) bidirectional DC/DC converters have three energy ports and offer advantages of large voltage gain, galvanic isolation ability and high power density. For this reason this kind of converters are suitable to connect different energy sources and loads in electric and hybrid vehicles. The purpose of this paper is to propose chaotic modulation and the related control scheme for TPI bidirectional DC/DC converters, in such a way that the switching harmonic peaks can be suppressed in spectrum and the conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) is reduced. Two chaotic modulation strategies, namely the continuously chaotic modulation and the discretely chaotic modulation are presented. These two chaotic modulation strategies are applied for TPI bidirectional DC/DC converters with shifted-phase angle based control and phase-shifted PWM control. Both simulation and experiments are given to verify the validity of the proposed chaotic modulation-based control schemes.

In this study, a novel biomass-gas-and-nuclear-to-liquids (BGNTL) process is proposed. In this process, nuclear heat is used as the heat source of a steam methane reforming (SMR) process. In a prior work, a rigorous model was developed for the integrated nuclear heat and steam methane reforming process in the gPROMS software package. This model was applied to simulate the integrated nuclear heat and SMR section of BGNTL in Aspen Plus within the other process sections. The BGNTL process was considered for producing different fuels including gasoline & diesel or dimethyl ether (DME). Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is considered as an optional section. The performance of the BGNTL process was compared against a non-nuclear process called biomass-and-gas-to-liquids (BGTL). The efficiency, economics, and environmental impact analyses show that the BGNTL process to produce DME is the most efficient, economic and environmentally friendly process among the considered designs. Flow-induced motion (FIM) performs well in energy conversion but has been barely investigated, particularly for prisms with sharp sections. Previous studies have proven that T-section prisms that undergo galloping branches with high amplitude are beneficial to energy conversions. The FIM experimental setup designed by Tianjin University (TJU) was improved to conduct a series of FIM responses and energy conversion tests on a T-section prism. Experimental results are presented and discussed, to reveal the complete FIM responses and power generation characteristics of the T-section prism under different load resistances and section aspect ratios. The main findings are summarized as follows. (1) Hard galloping (HG), soft galloping (SG), and critical galloping (CG) can be observed by varying load resistances. When the load resistances are low, HG occurs; otherwise, SG occurs. (2) In the galloping branch, the highest amplitude and the most stable oscillation cause high-quality electrical ene... [more]
