Thermoacoustic Combustion Stability Analysis of a Bluff Body-Stabilized Burner Fueled by Methane−Air and Hydrogen−Air Mixtures
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Flame Response Function, Helmholtz solver, Hydrogen, thermoacoustic
Hydrogen can play a key role in the gradual transition towards a full decarbonization of the combustion sector, e.g., in power generation. Despite the advantages related to the use of this carbon-free fuel, there are still several challenging technical issues that must be addressed such as the thermoacoustic instability triggered by hydrogen. Given that burners are usually designed to work with methane or other fossil fuels, it is important to investigate their thermoacoustic behavior when fueled by hydrogen. In this framework, the present work aims to propose a methodology which combines Computational Fluid Dynamics CFD (3D Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)) and Finite Element Method (FEM) approaches in order to investigate the fluid dynamic and the thermoacoustic behavior introduced by hydrogen in a burner (a lab-scale bluff body stabilized burner) designed to work with methane. The case of CH4-air mixture was used for the validation against experimental results and benchmark CF... [more]

Review of Methods to Create Meteorological Data Suitable for Moisture Control Design by Hygrothermal Building Envelope Simulation
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: hygrothermal reference year, hygrothermal simulation, meteorological data, moisture control design
Hygrothermal simulations have become essential for sustainable and resilient building design because moisture is the major cause of problems in buildings. Appropriate meteorological input data are important to obtain meaningful simulation results. Therefore, this article reviews different methods to create Hygrothermal Reference Years (HRY) as severe or average climate inputs. The current standards define HRYs solely based on outdoor temperature, although moisture problems are caused by a combination of climate parameters, including driving rain and other loads. Therefore, there are also methods considering several impact parameters. The existing methods can be classified into two categories: construction-independent and construction-dependent methods. The former determines HRY based on a weather data analysis and is useful for large-scale parametric studies comprising many climatic parameters acting on buildings. The latter is based in addition to computer simulations to verify the HR... [more]

Learning from Other Community Renewable Energy Projects: Transnational Transfer of Multi-Functional Energy Gardens from the Netherlands to Germany
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: best practice transfer, business models, citizen energy, Germany, integrated energy systems, local acceptance, Netherlands, public participation, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, renewable energy communities
Citizen energy in general and renewable energy communities (RECs) in particular are becoming key vehicles for decentralisation, but also for the democratisation of the energy system. These initiatives are now more diverse than ever and are likely to continue to act as incubators for significant projects in the transition to a renewable energy system. Beside the legal, regulatory, and financial challenges, there are several socio-economic and regulatory barriers that hinder the implementation of community energy projects. For this reason, policy learning and the dissemination of good/best practices that are transferable also to other contexts are important. This is an aspect that has not yet attracted much investigation, and only a few studies have explored the importance of transfer activities for the implementation of REC initiatives and their motives. This article aimed to address this knowledge gap by focussing on the transfer processes of best practices initiated in a particular re... [more]

Multiple Load Forecasting of Integrated Energy System Based on Sequential-Parallel Hybrid Ensemble Learning
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: ensemble learning, grid search, load forecasting of integrated energy system, maximum information coefficient
Accurate multivariate load forecasting plays an important role in the planning management and safe operation of integrated energy systems. In order to simultaneously reduce the prediction bias and variance, a hybrid ensemble learning method for load forecasting of an integrated energy system combining sequential ensemble learning and parallel ensemble learning is proposed. Firstly, the load correlation and the maximum information coefficient (MIC) are used for feature selection. Then the base learner uses the Boost algorithm of sequential ensemble learning and uses the Bagging algorithm of parallel ensemble learning for hybrid ensemble learning prediction. The grid search algorithm (GS) performs hyper-parameter optimization of hybrid ensemble learning. The comparative analysis of the example verification shows that compared with different types of single ensemble learning, hybrid ensemble learning can better balance the bias and variance and accurately predict multiple loads such as el... Fast Well Control Optimization with Two-Stage Proxy Modeling
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: derivative-free optimization, global and local proxy modeling, Machine Learning, reservoir simulation
Waterflooding is one of the methods used for increased hydrocarbon production. Waterflooding optimization can be computationally prohibitive if the reservoir model or the optimization problem is complex. Hence, proxy modeling can yield a faster solution than numerical reservoir simulation. This fast solution provides insights to better formulate field development plans. Due to technological advancements, machine learning increasingly contributes to the designing and building of proxy models. Thus, in this work, we have proposed the application of the two-stage proxy modeling, namely global and local components, to generate useful insights. We have established global proxy models and coupled them with optimization algorithms to produce a new database. In this paper, the machine learning technique used is a multilayer perceptron. The optimization algorithms comprise the Genetic Algorithm and the Particle Swarm Optimization. We then implemented the newly generated database to build local... [more]

Optimal Design of Double Stage Internal Loop Air-Lift Bioreactor
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air lift bioreactor, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), hydrodynamics, OpenFOAM®, reactor design
Biorefinery systems play a critical role in the transition towards a sustainable bioeconomy, and bioreactors are a key component in these systems. While mechanically stirred reactors have been extensively studied, there is a lack of research on pneumatically driven systems like air-lift reactors (ALRs). This study aims to address this gap by examining the hydrodynamic behavior of a double draft tube airlift bioreactor using Computational fluid dynamics simulations. Ten different geometric configurations were investigated, with variations in draft tube placement, liquid height, distance between draft tubes and draft tube diameters. Results showed that the placement of the draft tubes heavily influenced hydrodynamic behavior, with smaller distances between draft tubes and a funnel configuration leading to higher velocities. Stable downcomer velocities were achieved by maintaining a consistent distance between the bottom clearance and the sum of the distance between draft tubes and the bo... [more]

The Underground Coal Gasification Process in Laboratory Conditions: An Experimental Study
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: efficiency, ex-situ reactor, experiment, material balance, Syngas, underground coal gasification
The underground coal gasification (UCG) process represents a modern and effective coal mining technology that enables coal energy extraction through thermic decomposition. The coal is transformed into syngas by oxidizers (e.g., air, technical oxygen, or water steam) and is injected into a georeactor. The produced syngas is exhausted on the surface, where it is transformed into the desired form of energy. This paper presents an experimental study of two experiments performed in ex-situ reactors. The paper describes the equipment for the UCG process, the physical models of the coal seam, and the analysis of coal. The obtained results from the experiments are presented as the behavior of the temperatures in the coal during the experiment, the syngas composition, and its calorific value. The material balance and effective gasification time of the UCG process were also identified for the individual experiments. The aim was to evaluate the impact of the coal seam model on the gasification pr... [more]

Characteristic Evaluation of Different Carbonization Processes for Hydrochar, Torrefied Char, and Biochar Produced from Cattle Manure
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biochar, cattle manure, hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, slow pyrolysis, torrefaction, torrefied char
The amount of cattle manure generated accounts for over 40% of the livestock manure in South Korea. Most livestock manure is utilized as a fertilizer and a soil amendment. However, the soil nutrients have exceeded saturation in South Korea. Accordingly, cattle manure, including lignocellulosic biomass, was applied for solid fuel production in this study. The three different types of carbonization process, namely, hydrothermal carbonization, torrefaction, and carbonization (slow pyrolysis), were estimated for a comparison of the hydrochar, torrefied char, and biochar characteristics derived from cattle manure. The processes were performed at temperatures ranging from 190 to 450 °C. The evaluation of the hydrochar, torrefied char, and biochar produced by three processes was conducted by the proximate, ultimate, calorific value, fuel ratio, and energy yield, which were used for the analysis of fuel quality. Operation Approval for Commercial Airborne Wind Energy Systems
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: airborne wind energy, certification, CONOPS, safety requirements, SAIL, SORA, specific category, specific operations risk assessment, tethered UAS
Integrating the operation of airborne wind energy systems safely into the airspace requires a systematic qualification process. It seems likely that the European Union Aviation Safety Agency will approve commercial systems as unmanned aircraft systems within the “specific” category, requiring risk-based operational authorization. In this paper, we interpret the risk assessment methodology for airborne wind energy systems, going through the ten required steps of the recommended procedure and discussing the particularities of tethered energy-harvesting systems. Although the described process applies to the entire field of airborne wind energy, we detail it for a commercial flexible-wing airborne wind energy system. We find that the air risk mitigations improve the consolidated specific assurance and integrity level by a factor of two. It is expected that the framework will increase the safety level of commercial airborne wind energy systems and ultimately lead to operation approval.

Determination of Critical Point of Particle Migration Direction in a Confined Shear Flow of Giesekus Fluids
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: critical point, Giesekus fluid, migration direction, numerical simulation, shear flow, spherical particle
Migration of a particle in a confined shear flow of Giesekus fluids is investigated numerically with the method of direct forcing/fictitious domain. We focus on the migration direction for the particle with initial lateral position y0 and determination of critical point yc of a particle moving towards the center line or wall. The effect of viscosity ratio μr, shear-thinning parameter α, Weissenberg number Wi, and blocking rate β on the value yc is analyzed. The results showed that when μr ≤ 0.5, the particle will migrate towards the wall regardless of the value of y0. When μr > 0.5, yc increases with increasing μr, and some particles will migrate towards the center line with the increase in μr. The particle is more likely to migrate towards the center line at small values of Wi and α but at large values of μr. The impact of Wi and β on the particle migration direction is more obvious. The particle will migrate towards the wall for β = 0.3 and is more likely to migrate towards the wall... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: ageing, dimensional analysis, electroluminescence, insulation, Modelling
The Electroluminescence (EL) technique has garnered significant interest over time for its reliable outcomes that enrich our understanding of the onset of electrical degradation in polymeric material. There is growing interest in combining both the EL technique and space charge measurement methods to obtain a more profound knowledge of the degradation and ageing of insulation. The generation of charge carriers in polymeric materials is widely acknowledged to be a crucial aspect of EL, involving injection, de-trapping, and field dissociation processes. This research investigates the variables that influence how EL emissions behave, including applied voltage or electric field, applied electrical frequency, ageing of material, and selection of materials and gases employed. It was found that these factors can be helpful in predicting the process of electrical ageing in insulation to avoid any catastrophes that may occur. April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: agrivoltaic system, climate change, farming photovoltaics, increasing food production, photosynthetic photon flux density, solar radiation
Climate change and increasing food demand are global issues that require immediate attention. The agrivoltaic system, which involves installing solar panels above farmland, can simultaneously solve climate and food issues. However, current systems tend to reduce agricultural production and delay the harvest period due to shading by the solar panels. A delayed harvest period impacts the income of farmers who wish to sell produce at specific times. Incorporating a model that calculates the amount of electricity generated by solar irradiation, this study establishes a model to estimate the correct start date of cultivation for solar panel covered crops to ensure the correct harvest date and determines the expected income of farmers by calculating agricultural production and power generation. Using taro cultivation in Miyazaki Prefecture as a case study, the model estimated that the start date of cultivation should be brought forward by 23 days to ensure the ideal harvest period and agricu... Microstructure of Surface Pollutants and Brush-Based Dry Cleaning of a Trough Concentrating Solar Power Station
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: brush-based dry cleaning, concentrating solar power station, deposition mode, microstructure, surface pollutants
The accumulation of pollutants on the surface of a Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) station reduces the power generation efficiency of the whole power plant, affects electricity output, and decreases sales income; therefore, it is particularly important to develop a reasonable and effective cleaning process. Surface pollutants which have a strong interaction with the cleaning process of power stations can determine the quality of cleaning to a certain extent. In this paper, the pollutants on the surface of a trough CSP station with different usage times were collected and characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a particle size analyzer (PSA), and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). It was found that most of the surface pollutants were of a fine size and included amorphous particles which mainly resulted from the sedimentation of particles suspended for a short time or particles in the process of atmospheric circulation for a long time. Subject: Process Design
Keywords: biogas, phytotoxicity, polyphenols, wastewater valorization
Biological treatments focused on stabilizing and detoxifying olive mill wastewater facilitate agronomic reuse for irrigation and fertilization. Anaerobic digestion is particularly attractive in view of energy recovery, but is severely hampered by the microbial toxicity of olive mill wastewater. In this work, the addition of biochar to the digestion mixture was studied to improve the stability and efficiency of the anaerobic process. Kinetics and yields of biogas production were evaluated in batch digestion tests with biochar concentrations ranging from 0 to 45 g L−1. The addition of biochar reduced sensibly the lag phase for methanogenesis and increased the maximum rate of biogas generation. Final yields of hydrogen and methane were not affected. Upon addition of biochar, soluble COD removal increased from 66% up to 84%, and phenolics removal increased from 50% up to 95%. Digestate phytotoxicity, as measured by seed germination tests, was reduced compared to raw wastewater. Addition of... [more]

A Bilevel Stochastic Optimization Framework for Market-Oriented Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Market Power
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bilevel programming, KKT conditions, market power, mixed-integer linear/quadratic programming, stochastic programming, transmission expansion planning
Market power, defined as the ability to raise prices above competitive levels profitably, continues to be a prime concern in the restructured electricity markets. Market power must be mitigated to improve market performance and avoid inefficient generation investment, price volatility, and overpayment in power systems. For this reason, involving market power in the transmission expansion planning (TEP) problem is essential for ensuring the efficient operation of the electricity markets. In this regard, a methodological bilevel stochastic framework for the TEP problem that explicitly includes the market power indices in the upper level is proposed, aiming to restrict the potential market power execution. A mixed-integer linear/quadratic programming (MILP/MIQP) reformulation of the stochastic bilevel model is constructed utilizing Karush−Kuhn−Tucker (KKT) conditions. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bioenergy, carbon content, hydrogen content, nitrogen content, stand density management, ultimate analyses, volatile carbon, white spruce, wood biomass, wood drying methodologies
The relative proportions of different chemical components in wood tissues is one of the underlying factors that control wood properties. These proportions vary within and between woody tissues, and an accurate description of these variations is critical for parameterizing forest biogeochemical budgets and models. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) spacing intensities trials in the Petawawa Research Forest, Ontario, Canada, were sampled to evaluate variations in carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) concentrations between different tissue types, i.e., bark, cambium, knots, earlywood, latewood, and wood. Samples were freeze-dried and oven-dried to test the impact of the drying methods on these chemical elements. Freeze-dried C (51.14) and H (6.18) concentrations were significantly higher than those of oven-dried C (50.55) and H (6.06). Freeze-dried N (0.18) did not differ from oven-dried N (0.17). Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alcohol influence, biodiesel aging, methyl oleate, oxidation kinetics, sequence of aging products, solketal
The complexity of biodiesel aging has shown that the mechanism needs further research. The rate of aging product formation and associated interactions can help improve fuel quality. Since biodiesel is a multicomponent system and constant changes occur in the chemical environment, which interactions yield which products must be shown in more detail. Particularly under observation was the correlation between peroxides and epoxides. In addition, it is critical that the influence and interactions of new drop-in fuel candidates be investigated. In this work, the kinetics of the formation of aging products of methyl oleate (C18:1) are studied. The aim was to reduce the complexity in order to be able to make more precise and detailed statements about the mechanism. Ketones, acids, peroxide, and epoxide values were recorded. Graph-Based Computational Methods for Efficient Management and Energy Conservation in Smart Cities
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: GIS, graph transformations, smart cities, street lighting
Computational methods play a significant role in reducing energy consumption in cities. Many different sensor networks (e.g., traffic intensity sensors, intelligent cameras, air quality monitoring systems) generate data that can be useful for both efficient management (including planning) and reducing energy usage. Street lighting is one of the most significant contributors to urban power consumption. This paper presents a summary of recent attempts to use computational methods to reduce energy usage by lighting systems, with special focus on graph-based methods. Such algorithms require all the necessary data to be integrated, in order to function properly: this task is not trivial, and is very time-consuming; therefore, the second part of the paper proposes a novel approach to integrating urban datasets and automating the optimisation process. In two practical examples, we show how spatially triggered graph transformations (STGT) can be used to build a model based on the road network... [more]

Subject: System Identification
Keywords: AAS, FT-IR, gas analysis, ICP-OES, lithium-ion batteries, SEM-EDS, thermal abuse test, thermal runaway, venting
Thermal abuse of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) leads to the emission of gases, solids, fires and/or explosions. Therefore, it is essential to define the temperatures at which key events occur (i.e., CID activation, venting, and thermal runaway (TR)) and to identify the related emissions for identifying the hazards to which people and especially rescue teams are exposed. For this purpose, thermal abuse tests were performed on commercial lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) 18650 cells at 50% state of charge in a reactor connected to an FT-IR spectrometer by varying test conditions (feed gas of N2 or air; heating rates of 5 or 10 °C/min until 300 °C). In particular, the concentrations of the gases and the composition of the condensed-phase emissions were estimated. Novel Planning Methodology for Spatially Optimized RES Development Which Minimizes Flexibility Requirements for Their Integration into the Power System
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: constrained least squares, decarbonization, flexibility, Optimization, RES capacity expansion planning
An optimization model which determines optimal spatial allocation of wind (WPPs) and PV power plants (PVPPs) for an energy independent power system is developed in this paper. Complementarity of the natural generation profiles of WPPs and PVPPs, as well as differences between generation profiles of WPPs and PVPPs located in different regions, gives us opportunity to optimize the generation capacity structure and spatial allocation of renewable energy sources (RES) in order to satisfy the energy needs while alleviating the total flexibility requirements in the power system. The optimization model is based on least squared error minimization under constraints where the error represents the difference between total wind and solar generation and the referent consumption profile. This model leverages between total energy and total power requirements that flexibility resources in the considered power system need to provide in the sense that the total balancing energy minimization implicitly... Subject: Materials
Keywords: breeding blanket, coupled analysis, DEMO, thermofluid dynamics, thermomechanics, WCLL BB
In the EU, the Water-Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) Breeding Blanket (BB) concept is one of the candidates for the design of the DEMO reactor. From the past campaign of analysis emerged that the thermal-induced stress led to the failure in the verification of the RCC-MRx structural criteria. Hence, in this paper the classic conceptual design approach, based on a pure FEM thermal and structural analysis, is compared to a coupled thermofluid-dynamic/structural one. Even though the coupled approach requires tremendous modelling effort and computational burden, it surely allows determining the thermal field with a higher level of detail than the FEM analysis. Therefore, in this work, the focus is put on the impact of a more detailed thermal field on the DEMO WCLL BB global structural performances, focusing on the Top Cap region of its Central Outboard Blanket segment.
